RESUMO

This article examines the development of primary English education from teachers' and students' perspectives; this is done by investigating environment, curriculum and teacher and students' information. The study was carried out with 42 primary English teachers and 404 primary students from 90 urban and rural primary schools in 13 regions in the Hunan Province, China, the participants engaged in the questionnaire tasks to investigate the present status and problems with primary English education in the Hunan Province. Based on the assessment indicators through CIPP model, combining educational theory and sustainable development theory, the present study develops a primary school English education evaluation model and conducts a practical investigation of primary school English education in the Hunan Province, based on the established model. The findings indicate that the quality of teachers has improved, teaching methods and teaching equipment have become diversified, and student interests and English proficiencies have increased. However, there are still deficiencies in the implementation of Primary English Education in the Hunan Province. For instance, certain schools improperly implement national policies, resulting in imbalanced education. Additionally, educational inequality persists due to disparities in family economic status and importance. Moreover, regional, ideological, and management factors contribute to uneven allocation of educational resources. Furthermore, significant disparities exist between urban and rural areas in terms of teacher qualifications, teaching quality, and school operating hours. The article proposes enhancing awareness of sustainable development, strengthening supervision, and seeking educational and policy support to facilitate the sustainable development of primary English education.

RESUMO

Medical students took the initiative by introducing LGBTQ+ education in preclinical elective classes at their medical school. As instructors, they led classes focused on small group discussions in a common "learning community" setting. The Peer Assisted Learning between classmates promoted effective discussions in classroom activities, allowing students to deepen their understanding of LGBTQ+. Student-initiated action to introduce new content into the curriculum together with student-led classes may be a useful learning strategy in LGBTQ+ education.

RESUMO

Recently, second-language learning success depends upon the students' interest and motivation by adopting innovations that require regulators' and new researchers' emphasis. Hence, this article explores the role of resistance to innovation, lack of intercultural communication, and students' interest on the students' demotivation. The article also examines the mediating role of students' demotivation among resistance to innovation, lack of intercultural communication, lack of students' interest, and failure of the English education system in China. This study has gathered the data using survey questionnaires and analyzed the collected data using smart-PLS. The results exposed that the resistance to innovation, lack of intercultural communication, and students' interest have a significant and positive linkage with students' demotivation. The findings also indicated that students' demotivation significantly mediates among resistance to innovation, lack of intercultural communication, lack of students' interest, and failure of the English education system in China. This study guides the policymakers to develop the policies related to improving the English education system in China using innovation that enhances students' interest and motivation. RESUMO

To explore the reconstruction and practice of medical English education in medical colleges and universities in China, totally, 23 deans of foreign language schools of medical universities and teachers in charge of English for Medical Purpose from prestigious universities where students have access to multidisciplinary education were interviewed via WeChat respectively. Additionally, a valid questionnaire survey was collected of 2 270 medical undergraduates in Xi'an Medical University, thus to evaluate feedback related to medical English education. In terms of medical English education, medical colleges and universities have such commonly shared disadvantages as insufficient medical knowledge of medical English teachers, imbalance between medical teaching and medical education, insufficient humanistic education in medical English teaching, poor integration of language and medicine science, ineffective coordination and matching between curriculum teaching and education objectives. Advisably, mixed mode of medical English education and teaching system in medical colleges and universities should be restructured. As for the development of English teachers for Medical Purpose, the synergy between medical English teachers in medical colleges and clinicians in affiliated hospitals should be developed via cooperative lesson preparation and classroom teaching characterized by hospital-school collaboration. Also, concerning teaching approaches and education and teaching objectives, the mixing of online and offline teaching should be adopted to achieve the objectives of making students be intellectually, competently, and emotionally qualified for future post. Last, medical English discipline should be prioritized to provide support for medical English education and teaching. The teaching and research competence of medical English teachers is the key factor for medical English education and teaching in medical colleges and universities. Importantly, integration of academia and medical industry needs to be deepened to facilitate the integration of medical industry, education and research, thus to ensure the development of high-quality medical talents with good mastery of English and medical English talents with good mastery of medicine in the fields of medical diplomacy and medical aid in African countries.

RESUMO

The role of the human-computer interaction (HCI) system in college students' oral English learning is discussed to analyze the current situation of college students' oral English based on the HCI simulation system. The purpose is to study the oral education of college students. First, the theories of educational psychology, the HCI system, and the current situation of college students' oral English learning are elaborated. Meanwhile, in oral English teaching, teachers use support vector machines and multimodal fusion intention perception methods in set theory to realize the interactive teaching between students and machines; then, the HCI simulation of oral English is explained. The current situation of college students' oral English learning is analyzed by a questionnaire from the perspective of educational psychology. Finally, the HCI system in college students' oral English learning is explored based on the learning level detection. The results show that 12% of college students are unqualified in oral English; 25% of them think their oral English level is medium; most of college students' English learning anxiety is related to English progress anxiety; 18% of the students believe that they will study oral English for life; 32% of the students think that they have more opportunities to learn English at ordinary times; and most of the students learn English through English movies and songs outside of class. What attracts college students to learn oral English through the HCI system is that learning is not limited by time and space. Most students believe that their English level is good and hope that learning anxiety can be reduced through HCI systems. The strategies of college students' oral English education with an HCI simulation system are evaluated based on the perspective of educational psychology, providing a research basis for oral English education in other regions and even the whole country to facilitate the better development of oral English education.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: English education in professional areas has become more and more important with the increasing internationalization of health profession education in countries around the world. In this study, we aimed to evaluate current Chinese stomatology English education based on Chinese participants' ability to apply stomatology English during an international stomatology skill competition called the 'Guanghua Cup activity'. METHODS: The registration rate of English and Chinese volunteers and the answer rate and accuracy of Chinese and international contestants on the English knowledge quiz were statistically described. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was delivered to all participants. The data were analyzed using the Spearman test, Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Among the 194 students, the English and Chinese volunteer registration rate was 7.73 and 30.93%, respectively. The answer rate of Chinese contestants and international contestants in the English quiz was 25 and 75%, with an accuracy rate of 50 and 66.70%, respectively. The questionnaire was graded by Likert five-level classification. There was a positive correlation between the use of English textbooks in classes and the communication with international teachers and students in the competition (Rs = 0.348, p = 0.016). English volunteers had more preparation in English before the competition, more opportunities to communicate with international peers, and greater improvement in English ability than the contestants and Chinese volunteers (p < 0.001). After the competition, all participants paid more attention to stomatology English (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Chinese stomatology students have difficulty in stomatology English application. The 'Guanghua Cup' helps to improve English proficiency of English volunteers and arouses the interest of stomatology English for all participants. Chinese stomatology school needs to strengthen and reach a consensus in stomatology English education.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study attempted to identify the problem South Korea faces in its development of the medical tourism industry from the perspective of English education. METHODS: To assess the preparedness and problems of future Korean nurses in dealing with foreign patients, a questionnaire was conducted in 2017 on 146 freshman and sophomore nursing major students at CHA University in South Korea. RESULTS: Although the nursing major students were highly satisfied with the English instructors, they did not feel that the curriculum prepared them well to deal with foreign patients in the future. They also felt that the teaching methodology employed in the class should be changed to incorporate more medical content into the nursing English program. CONCLUSION: In order for South Korea to play a bigger role in the medical tourism industry, higher education institutions for medicine need to pay more attention to the English education of their students. More specifically, team-taught English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curricula should be established in order to meet the needs of future medical professionals.

RESUMO

This study investigated whether relative lexical proficiency in Dutch and English in child second language (L2) learners is related to executive functioning. Participants were Dutch primary school pupils of three different age groups (4-5, 8-9, and 11-12 years) who either were enrolled in an early-English schooling program or were age-matched controls not on that early-English program. Participants performed tasks that measured switching, inhibition, and working memory. Early-English program pupils had greater knowledge of English vocabulary and more balanced Dutch-English lexicons. In both groups, lexical balance, a ratio measure obtained by dividing vocabulary scores in English by those in Dutch, was related to switching but not to inhibition or working memory performance. These results show that for children who are learning an L2 in an instructional setting, and for whom managing two languages is not yet an automatized process, language balance may be more important than L2 proficiency in influencing the relation between childhood bilingualism and switching abilities.

RESUMO

A special elective course to prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination for 2 hours weekly was introduced for our 3rd-and 4th-year students 3 years ago. The course consists of two parts: one part concerned basic medical knowledge taught by medical faculty with American textbooks and the other part concerned medical English taught by a native English speaker speaking at a natural speed so that students will be able to understand naturally spoken English.

RESUMO

Because Japanese high school graduates have poor basic English skills they have difficulty acquiringduring the 6 years of medical school English skills sufficient to write medical papers in easily understood English and to converse with foreign medical researchers at international medical conferences in fluent English. In an attempt to improve English teaching in medical schools we analyzed the structures of sentences in high school English textbooks and compared them with those of sentences in more advanced English, as in the journals Science and Nature. We found that the English in high school textbooks has significantly lower subordination ratios. Thus, we propose that English with higher subordination ratios be taught in the 1st year of medical school.
