Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic heart disease that can lead to heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and ischaemic symptoms. Managing patients with HCM and ischaemic symptoms is challenging, and several treatment options have been proposed. Case summary: A 30-year-old male patient presented with severe chest pain that had been ongoing for more than 30 min at rest. He was diagnosed with HCM and had periodic chest pain since the age of 14. He underwent two separate ethyl alcohol ablations of the first septal branches of the left anterior descending and posterior descending arteries, which relieved his symptoms. Discussion: This case report highlights the challenges in managing patients with HCM and ischaemic symptoms. In this patient, the use of ethyl alcohol ablation was effective in reducing left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and improving symptoms. Ethyl alcohol ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that has been shown to be effective in symptomatic patients with HCM. Overall, this case report emphasizes the importance of individualized treatment for patients with HCM and the potential benefits of alcohol ablation in this population.

Prolonged ethanol (EtOH) consumption is associated with male infertility, with a decreased spermatogenesis rate as one cause. The defective maturation and development of sperm during their storage in the cauda epididymis and transit in the seminal vesicle can be another cause, possibly occurring before the drastic spermatogenesis disruption. Herein, we demonstrated that the cauda epididymis and seminal vesicle of rats, orally administered with EtOH under a regimen in which spermatogenesis was still ongoing, showed histological damage, including lesions, a decreased height of the epithelial cells and increased collagen fibers in the muscle layer, which implicated fibrosis. Lipid peroxidation (shown by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels) was observed, indicating that reactive oxygen species (ROS) were produced along with acetaldehyde during EtOH metabolism by CYP2E1. MDA, acetaldehyde and other lipid peroxidation products could further damage cellular components of the cauda epididymis and seminal vesicle, and this was supported by increased apoptosis (shown by a TUNEL assay and caspase 9/caspase 3 expression) in these two tissues of EtOH-treated rats. Consequently, the functionality of the cauda epididymis and seminal vesicle in EtOH-treated rats was impaired, as demonstrated by a decreases in 1H NMR-analyzed metabolites (e.g., carnitine, fructose), which were important for sperm development, metabolism and survival in their lumen.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the ameliorative effect of yeast extract(YE) on the inflammatory response of human hepatoma cells(HepG2) induced by ethyl alcohol(EtOH) and lipopolysaccharide(LPS), and further explore the potential molecular mechanism based on Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) signaling pathway. METHODS: HepG2 cells were induced by 50 mmol/L EtOH and 1 µg/mL LPS combined with YE intervention. The expression level of inflammatory cytokines was detected by ELISA. The expression level of TLR4 and the nuclear translocation of NF-κB were detected by immunofluorescence staining. The expression levels of TLR4, NF-κB, phospho-NF-κB-P65(P-NF-κB-p65), nucleus-phospho-NF-κB-p65(N-P-NF-κB-p65), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-6(IL-6), and interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß) were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the cells in EtOH+LPS group produced a large number of inflammatory factors and had a significant inflammatory response. YE intervention significantly alleviated EtOH+LPS induced hepatocyte inflammatory response. Further molecular mechanism studies showed that YE significantly reduced TLR4 expression level and inhibited NF-κB nuclear translocation in hepatocytes. CONCLUSION: YE can effectively inhibit the inflammatory response of HepG2 cells induced by EtOH and LPS, and its molecular mechanism may be related to the down-regulation of TLR4/NF-κB pathway.

Surgical myectomy is recommended for symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) after optimal pharmacological therapy. Percutaneous transluminal septal myocardial ablation (PTSMA) is reserved for high-risk adults. Symptomatic patients below 25 years underwent either surgery or PTSMA after heart-team discussion and informed consent. Echocardiography assessed gradients in surgical group. PTSMA group underwent invasive transseptal hemodynamic assessment, selective coronary angiography and super-selective cannulation of septal perforators using microcatheters. Contrast echocardiography through the microcatheter identified the myocardial target for PTSMA. Hemodynamic and electrocardiographic monitoring guided alcohol injection. Both groups were continued on beta-blockers. Symptoms, echocardiographic gradients and Brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) measurements were assessed on follow-up. Twelve patients aged 5-23 years (11-98 kg) formed the study group. Indications for PTSMA in 8 patients included abnormal mitral valve anatomy warranting replacement (n = 3), Jehovah's witness (n = 2), severe neurodevelopmental and growth retardation (n = 1) and refusal of surgery (n = 2). PTSMA targeted first perforator (n = 5), second perforator (n = 2) and anomalous septal artery from left main trunk (n = 1). Outflow gradient reduced from 92.5 ± 19.7 to 33.1 ± 13.5 mmHg. At a median follow-up of 38 months (range 3-120 weeks), the peak instantaneous echocardiographic gradient was 32 ± 16.5 mmHg. Gradient reduced in four surgical patients from 86.5 ± 16.3 mmHg to 42 ± 14.7 mm Hg. All patients were in NYHA class I/II on follow-up. The mean NTproBNP in PTSMA group reduced from 6084 ± 3628 pg/ml to 3081 ± 2019 pg/ml; it was 1396 and 1795 pg/ml in surgery. PTSMA may be considered in medically refractory high-risk young patients. It relieves symptoms and reduces gradient. Though surgery is preferred in young patients, PTSMA may have a role in selected patients.

The role of endophytes in maintaining healthy plant ecosystems and holding promise for agriculture and food security is deeply appreciated. In the current study, we determine the community structure, spatial distribution, chemical diversity, and ecological functions of fungal endophytes of Rosa damascena growing in the North-Western Himalayas. Culture-dependent methods revealed that R. damascena supported a rich endophyte diversity comprising 32 genera and 68 OTUs. The diversity was governed by climate, altitude, and tissue type. Species of Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Diaporthe were the core endophytes of the host plant consisting of 48.8% of the endophytes collectively. The predominant pathogen of the host was Alternaria spp., especially A. alternata. GC-MS analyses affirmed the production of diverse arrays of volatile organic compounds (VOC) by individual endophytes. Among the primary rose oil components, Diaporthe melonis RDE257, and Periconia verrucosa RDE85 produced phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) and benzyl alcohol (BA). The endophytes displayed varied levels of plant growth-promoting, colonization, and anti-pathogenic traits. Between the selected endophytes, P. verrucosa and D. melonis significantly potentiated plant growth and the flavonoids and chlorophyll content in the host. The potential of these two endophytes and their metabolites PEA and BA was confirmed on Nicotiana tabacum. The treatments of the metabolites and individual endophytes enhanced the growth parameters in the model plant significantly. The results imply that P. verrucosa and D. melonis are potential plant growth enhancers and their activity may be partially due to the production of PEA and BA. Thus, R. damascena harbors diverse endophytes with potential applications in disease suppression and host growth promotion. Further investigations at the molecular level are warranted to develop green endophytic agents for sustainable cultivation of R. damascena and biocontrol of leaf spot disease.

Background/purpose: The application of liner type denture adhesives containing ethyl alcohol (EtOH) may result in the person being considered a drunk driver, which is a social problem. This study measured the amount of EtOH loss from the materials and its effect on breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). Materials and methods: The amount of EtOH loss of three liner type denture adhesives was measured using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Five specimens were measured for each material. The BrAC of ten participants who wore the palatal plate lined with the material having the highest amount of EtOH elution was also determined using an alcohol detector every 5 min for 60 min. The threshold for drunk driving was a BrAC of 0.15 mg/L or more. Results: Significant differences were found in the amount of EtOH elution among the three materials. For all materials, the elution amount from the start of immersion to 30 min was significantly larger than that of the following 30 min (P < 0.05). BrAC values of the participants reached their maxima 5 min after insertion of the materials, and 80% of participants surpassed the threshold for drunk driving. However, no participants reached the threshold for drunk driving after 50 min. Conclusion: The results suggest that a determination of drunk drinking will not be made when 1 h or more has passed after insertion of a denture lined with a liner type denture adhesive into the mouth, though a determination of drunk driving may exist due to EtOH from the materials.

ETHNOBOTANICAL RELEVANCE: Rosa damascena Mill. (Rosaceae), commonly known as damask rose, is an ancient medicinal and perfumery plant used in Traditional Unani Medicine due to various therapeutic effects, including cardiovascular benefits. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the vasorelaxant effect of the 2-phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) isolated from the spent flowers of R. damascena which remain after the extraction of essential oil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The freshly collected flowers of R. damascena were hydro-distilled in a Clevenger's type apparatus to extract the rose essential oil (REO). After removing the REO, the spent-flower hydro-distillate was collected and extracted with organic solvents to yield a spent-flower hydro-distillate extract (SFHE), which was further purified by column chromatography. The SFHE and its isolate were characterized by gas chromatography (GC-FID), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The PEA, isolated from SFHE, was evaluated for vasorelaxation response in conduit blood vessels like rat aorta and resistant vessels like mesenteric artery. The preliminary screening of PEA was done in aortic preparation pre-constricted with phenylephrine/U46619. Further, a concentration-dependent relaxation response to PEA has been elicited in both endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded arterial rings, and the mode of action was explored. RESULTS: The SFHE revealed the presence of PEA as the main constituent (89.36%), which was further purified by column chromatography to a purity of 95.0%. The PEA exhibited potent vasorelaxation response both in conduit vessels like the rat aorta and resistance vessels like the mesenteric artery. The relaxation response is mediated without any involvement of vascular endothelium. Further, TEA sensitive BKCa channel was found to be the major target for PEA-induced relaxation response in these blood vessels. CONCLUSIONS: The spent flowers of R. damascena, which remain after the extraction of REO, could be used to extract PEA. The PEA possessed marked vasorelaxation properties in both aorta and mesenteric artery and showed promise for development into an herbal product against hypertension.

The purpose of this work was to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of nail Raman spectroscopy for fungal nail infections, specifically onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum. The study assessed the different ethyl alcohol retention rates between control and infected nails after soaking nail clippings in ethanolic solutions and drying. Results revealed that ethyl alcohol completely evaporated from infected nail samples, while significant amounts were still present in control samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to discriminate control from infected nails and showed superior group separation when nails were treated with ethyl alcohol. PCA loadings plot attributed the efficient classification to the νs (CCO) Raman vibrational mode of ethyl alcohol. As Raman spectroscopy can detect minute concentration changes of ethyl alcohol in nails and the deterioration caused by onychomycosis accelerates its evaporation, a simple and rapid method for detecting T. rubrum onychomycosis is proposed.

Xanthohumol is a hop-derived flavonoid that has been widely examined for its health-protecting and antitumorigenic properties, but not yet in a natural beer matrix. The aim of the study was to investigate the antitumorigenic potential of a xanthohumol-enriched beer in vivo. Four groups of 4 × 10 nude mice were formed. Following the injection of HeLa tumorigenic cell lines, the treatment groups were administered a xanthohumol supplementation for 100 days, either dissolved in beer or in an ethanolic solution with the same alcohol strength as beer. The control groups received un-supplemented material. The terminal tumor masses, liver weights, and plasma antioxidant capacities (FRAP and ABTS methods) were measured. For the statistical analysis, a two-way ANOVA test was performed (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in tumor size between the groups. Xanthohumol did not induce higher levels of plasma antioxidant capacity, neither in beer nor in the water-ethanol matrix. The terminal liver weights were significantly higher in the control group receiving the unsupplemented ethanol solution. Xanthohumol dissolved in beer or in the water-alcohol matrix did not have a protective effect on tumor growth, nor did it have a positive effect on plasma antioxidant capacity either. However, beer with added xanthohumol had a less harmful effect on the liver compared to the supplemented water-ethanol solution. Our results indicate the possible negative countereffect of ethanol; however, further investigations are needed.

This paper presents the results of a study on the applicability of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected from the spinal canal in the post-mortem determination of ethyl alcohol. The present study reviewed data of autopsy cases (n = 45), in which ethyl alcohol was detected in CSF using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID), to investigate ethyl alcohol concentrations in CSF, compared with blood. As a result of statistical analysis of the obtained data, a high positive correlation was found between blood ethanol concentration and cerebrospinal fluid collected from the spinal canal ethanol concentration. The Pearson correlation coefficient was statistically highly significant (p < 0.001) (r = 0.9503). The data obtained allowed us to conclude that cerebrospinal fluid collected from the spinal canal can be collected during an autopsy as an alternative biological specimen to assess the ethanol content. Cerebrospinal fluid collected from the spinal canal can corroborate and lend credibility to the results obtained for blood and, in special cases, when blood is drawn from putrefied bodies and may even be a superior specimen to blood for assessing ethyl alcohol intoxication status.

Testicular torsion is twisting of the spermatic cord around its axis, which impairs blood flow and causes ischemia and formation of free radicals. Ferulic acid is a phenolic acid of the hydroxycinnamic family that is found in the seeds and leaves of plants; it is present in substantial amounts in fruits and vegetables. We investigated the protective effect of ferulic acid on experimental testicular torsion in rats. Animals were divided randomly into five groups: control, ethyl alcohol, torsion, torsion-detorsion, and torsion-detorsion + ferulic acid. Histopathology was assessed using hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid-Schiff staining. Tissues were assessed using TUNEL, active caspase-3, myeloperoxidase and inducible nitric oxide synthase immunostaining. Biochemical changes were assessed using assays for superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione. Ferulic acid reduced the levels of free radicals and increased the levels of antioxidants. Ferulic acid also reduced histopathological changes and germ cell differentiation in the testis following torsion-detorsion. Ferulic acid should be investigated further as a potential treatment for sequelae of torsion-detorsion injury.

Introduction: Mobile phones are frequently used in environments of high bacteria presence. These can harbor various potential pathogens and become an exogenous source of nosocomial infections. Even in recent outbreak of COVID-19, it has become a point which needs to be sanitized to prevent and control further disease transmission as it is equally important for health-care professionals to use mobile phones in the hospital and other health and care settings, especially for communication. The present study was conducted to determine the potential role of mobile phones in the dissemination of disease. Objective: To compare the evaluation of microbial contamination on the mobile phones used by dental health-care professionals and faculty of senior secondary school and to access the microbial contamination of mobile phones by measuring the percentages of pathogens and to determine the type of bacteria commonly present on mobile phones. It also assesses the efficacy of 70% ethyl alcohol to be used as decontamination solution. Materials and Methods: A total of 126 mobile phones were screened in the study; 63 mobile phones belonging to dental health-care personnel from nine different specialties of dental college (Group 1 - test group) and 63 mobile phones belonging to nonhealth-care personnel like school teachers of senior schools (Group 2 - control group). All the samples were taken before and after cleaning with 70% ethyl alcohol. A total of 252 swab samples were taken. Results: Microbial contamination was approximately 68% in swab samples taken from mobile phones before cleaning with 70% of ethyl alcohol but even with one time disinfection with alcohol, decontamination was found to be only 95% effective. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the most common isolated organism in swabs collected from dental college. Pathogenic bacteria were more prevalent in samples of dental college than to school samples. Conclusion: Ninetythree percentage of cell phones of health-care workers were contaminated and they act as potential source of nosocomial infections. Alcohol should be used to disinfect the mobile phones.

Resumen El fruto de la especie Parmentiera edulis, conocida como cuajilote, se produce de forma abundante por temporada, es rico en nutrientes y puede ser aprovechado para elaborar alimentos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue establecer la viabilidad técnica de utilizar el cuajilote en la formulación de alimentos y bebidas fermentadas para promover su aprovechamiento comercial. Se determinó la composición nutricional, el contenido fenólico y su capacidad antioxidante. Los frutos se deshidrataron y se obtuvo una harina que se mezcló al 0 % (control), 5 %, 10 % y 15 % con harina de maíz, para preparar tortillas, y se evaluó su composición nutricional y aceptación organoléptica. También, se elaboró una bebida fermentada y una bebida destilada, usando Sacharomyces cereviseae, a partir de pulpa de fruta con y sin cáscara. Los mostos para la bebida fermentada se pasteurizaron a 72 ºC/15 s. El fruto presentó alto contenido de proteína (6.5 ± 2.5 %) y fibra (3.9 ± 1.6 %), de compuestos fenólicos y capacidad antioxidante. En las tortillas, al aumentar la cantidad de cuajilote se elevó la cantidad de fibra y proteína. Sensorialmente, las tortillas adicionadas con 5 % y 10 % de cuajilote fueron mejor aceptadas. En la bebida fermentada no se encontró diferencia significativa en sus parámetros fisicoquímicos al elaborarla con y sin cáscara, excepto para la acidez total. Tampoco modificó el rendimiento de producción de bebida fermentada o de alcohol destilado. El cuajilote es un fruto poco incorporado a la dieta que presenta propiedades funcionales nutricionales adecuadas y puede ser aprovechado como materia prima en la elaboración de tortillas, aumentando su valor nutricional o para producir bebidas fermentadas o alcohol etílico.


Abstract The fruit of the species Parmentiera edulis, known as cuajilote, is abundantly produced per season, is rich in nutrients and can be used to make food. The objective of this work was to establish the technical feasibility of using cuajilote in the formulation of fermented foods and beverages to promote its commercial use. The nutritional composition, the phenolic content and its antioxidant capacity were determined. The fruits were dehydrated and a flour was obtained that was mixed at 0 % (control), 5 %, 10 % and 15 % with corn flour, to prepare tortillas, and its nutritional composition and organoleptic acceptance were evaluated. Also, a fermented beverage and a distilled beverage were elaborated, using Saccharomyces cereviseae, from fruit pulp with and without shell. The musts for the fermented beverage were pasteurized at 72 ºC/15 s. The fruit presented a high content of protein (6.5 ± 2.5 %) and fiber (3.9 ± 1.6 %) of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. In tortillas, increasing the amount of cuajilote increased the amount of fiber and protein. Sensorially, the tortillas added with 5 % and 10 % cuajilote were better accepted. In the fermented beverage, no significant difference was found in its physicochemical parameters when it was made with and without shell, except for total acidity. Nor did it modify the production yield of fermented beverage or distilled alcohol. Cuajilote is a fruit rarely incorporated into the diet that has adequate functional and nutritional properties and can be used as a raw material in the manufacture of tortillas, increasing its nutritional value or to produce fermented beverages or ethyl alcohol.

Alcohol abuse represents major societal problems, an unmet medical need resulting from our incomplete understanding of the mechanisms underlying alcohol's actions in the brain. To uncover these mechanisms, animal models have been proposed. Here, we explore the effects of acute alcohol administration in zebrafish, a promising animal model in alcohol research. One mechanism via which alcohol may influence behavior is the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system. As a proof-of-concept analysis, we study how D1 dopamine-receptor antagonism may alter the effects of acute alcohol on the behavior of adult zebrafish and on whole brain levels of neurochemicals. We conduct these analyses using a quasi-inbred strain, AB, and a genetically heterogeneous population SFWT. Our results uncover significant alcohol x D1-R antagonist interaction and main effects of these factors in shoaling, but only additive effects of these factors in measures of exploratory behavior. We also find interacting and main effects of alcohol and the D1-R antagonist on dopamine and DOPAC levels, but only alcohol effects on serotonin. We also uncover several strain dependent effects. These results demonstrate that acute alcohol may act through dopaminergic mechanisms for some but not all behavioral phenotypes, a novel discovery, and also suggest that strain differences may, in the future, help us identify molecular mechanisms underlying acute alcohol effects.

Introduction Depression is one of the common comorbidities seen in chronic alcohol use disorder. Also, alcohol withdrawal induces depression and anxiety, which is associated with relapse in alcohol consumption. Minocycline, a tetracycline derivative, has shown an antidepressant effect in preclinical models. However, their effect on alcohol withdrawal-induced depression has not been studied. Therefore, the current study has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of minocycline on alcohol abstinence-induced depression models in mice. Method We conducted the study in two models. C57bl/6 mice were given a two-bottle choice (alcohol + water) for 28 days. During alcohol abstinence of 14 days, mice were treated with 10 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, and 50 mg/kg of minocycline and were evaluated for behavioral changes using the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). A sucrose preference test was carried out where mice were exposed to binge alcohol drinking protocol for 12 days, where a two-bottle choice (alcohol or water) was given. This was followed by exposing the mice to a two-bottle choice paradigm (alcohol + sucrose) and they were divided into groups - no treatment group, vehicle-treated, minocycline 30 mg/kg or minocycline 50 mg/kg treated - and consumption of sucrose was assessed. Result In the forced swim test, a significant decrease in immobility time (p<0.05) was observed in the high-dose minocycline group (82.75±19.09) as compared to the vehicle control group (128.12±35.44). In the tail suspension test also, a significant decrease in immobility time (p<0.05) was seen in the high-dose minocycline group (83.75±18.61) as compared to the vehicle control group (122.25±18.51). The water and alcohol intake were comparable among all groups. In the sucrose preference test, it was found that the minocycline 50 mg/kg group had the highest sucrose preference (55%) followed by the minocycline 30 mg/kg group (50%) as compared to 42% in the vehicle control group. Significant reduction in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels was seen with minocycline 50 mg/kg (p<0.05) and minocycline 30 mg/kg group (p<0.05) in BDNF levels when compared to the normal control group. Conclusion Minocycline in a higher dose (50 mg/kg) has shown an effect in alcohol withdrawal-induced depression in the abstinence-induced two-bottle choice model in mice. Both doses of minocycline have shown an effect in the sucrose preference test in the alcohol withdrawal-induced depression model.

134 bacterial strains were isolated from phumdis of Loktak Lake. Through 16S rRNA sequencing, Bacillus sp. (23, 17.1%), Staphylococcus sp. (14, 10.4%), Pseudomonas sp. (11, 8.2%) and Acinetobacter sp. (8, 5.9%) were identified as the predominant bacterial taxa of Loktak Lake. B. pumulis (12, 8.9%), S. arlettae (4, 2.9%), P. knackmussii (6, 4.4%) are the leading species of Bacillus, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas, respectively. Similarly, A. seifertii (2, 1.4%) and A. calcoaceticus (2, 1.4%) are the common species of Acinetobacter. 75 (55.9%) bacterial strains showed the ability to hydrolyze one or more extracellular enzymes tested. Among the extracellular enzymes produced by the bacterial isolates, the presence of elastase activity cannot be underestimated, since the enzyme is involved in the process of bacterial lung infection. Phosphate solubilizing activity could be seen in 11.1% of the bacterial isolates. 27 (20.1%) of the strains shown to have antagonistic activity against one or more tested pathogens. An isolate, MRC 52 showed antagonistic activity against eleven different pathogens including carbapenem resistant E. coli which was further subjected to extraction and identification of the biomolecule exerting the antimicrobial property. Based on GC-MS analysis, the bioactive compound was identified as phenyl ethyl alcohol.

The utilization of ethanol as a component of motor gasolines is an extremely effective way to increase the detonation resistance and environmental properties. In Russia, despite the existing prerequisites for the development of bioethanol industry, the real production of bioethanol is not executed, which is associated with its high price. One of the promising ways of leveling this drawback is the utilization of water-cut waste from its production, involving ethyl alcohol impurity concentrate (EAIC) instead of pure ethanol. This is a mixture of head and bottoms fractions obtained in the process of ethyl alcohol purification by distillation. This research paper investigates the impact of the nature of hydrocarbon fraction blended with ethyl alcohol impurity concentrate on the final characterization of E85 fuel and, in particular, on its phase stability and Reid vapor pressure. Physicochemical characteristics of the developed fuel composition were studied. The results indicated that none of the possible classes of hydrocarbons could effectively solve the problems of phase stability and volatility of E85 fuel. Additionally, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was the only promising component. The composition, consisting of 70 % ethyl alcohol impurity concentrate and 30 % methyl tertiary butyl ether, met the requirements of American society for testing and materials (ASTM 5798) in almost all respects. A significant discrepancy is observed only in the water content, which is compensated by the great phase stability of the composition at low temperatures. In addition, this fuel composition is characterized by great potential competitiveness in Russian conditions and without fiscal support, which was proved by preliminary calculations of the cost of E85 fuel.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are considered to be a major global healthcare challenge, in large part because of the development of microbial resistance to currently approved antimicrobial drugs. HAIs are frequently preventable through infection prevention and control measures, with hand hygiene as a key activity. Improving hand hygiene was reported to reduce the transmission of healthcare-associated pathogens and HAIs. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are commonly used due to their rapid action and broad spectrum of microbicidal activity, offering protection against bacteria and viruses. However, their frequent administration has been reported to be associated with many side effects, such as skin sensitivity, skin drying, and cracks, which promote further skin infections. Thus, there is an essential need to find alternative approaches to hand sanitation. Rhamnolipids are glycolipids produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and were shown to have broad antimicrobial activity as biosurfactants. We have previously demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of rhamnolipid nano-micelles against selected drug-resistant Gram-negative (Salmonella Montevideo and Salmonella Typhimurium) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae). To the best of our knowledge, the antimicrobial activity of rhamnolipid nano-micelles in comparison to alcohol-based hand sanitizers against microorganisms commonly causing HAIs in Egypt-such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus-has not yet been studied. In the present work, a comparative study of the antibacterial activity of rhamnolipid nano-micelles versus alcohol-based hand sanitizers was performed, and their safety profiles were also assessed. It was demonstrated that rhamnolipid nano-micelles had a comparable antibacterial activity to alcohol-based hand sanitizer, with a better safety profile, i.e., rhamnolipid nano-micelles are unlikely to cause any harmful effects on the skin. Thus, rhamnolipid nano-micelles could be recommended to replace alcohol-based hand sanitizers; however, they must still be tested by healthcare workers in healthcare settings to ascertain their antimicrobial activity and safety.

Our research aimed to create an herbal fermented alcoholic beverage with high antioxidant and polyphenol content. In this study, continuous sampling was performed throughout the fermentation period, and the changes in total antioxidant (TA) and total polyphenol (TP) contents were determined. After processing the raw material, the prepared herbs were added in 0.5 and 1.0 v/v% concentrations to the samples. The TP content of the control sample was between 1.17 and 1.57 mg/g, and the TA content was 2.12 and 2.54 mg/g during the fermentation process. The lemongrass dosage increased 77.86 % the antioxidant and 70.98 % the polyphenol content by the end of the fermentation process. In the best case, the peppermint dosage increased 72.80 % of the antioxidant content and 72.05 % of the polyphenol content. Overall, fermentation combined with herbs dosage could increase the bioavailability of products made from its polyphenol and antioxidant contents and can be used to develop novel functional foods.

Healthcare-related infections are sustained by various bacteria and fungi. In recent years, various technologies have emerged for the sanitation of healthcare-related environments. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a no-touch disinfection system that aerosolizes 5% hydrogen peroxide and 10% ethyl alcohol. After selecting an environment, the Total Bacterial Count and the Total Fungal Count in the air and on a surface of the room were determined to evaluate the effectiveness of the aerosolization system. In addition, sterile stainless-steel plates inoculated with S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and Aspergillus spp. isolated from hospitalized patients and reference strains were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the system. For each organism, three plates were used: A (cleaned), B (not cleaned), and C (control). The A plates were treated with non-ionic surfactant and the aerosolization system, the B plates were subjected to the aerosolization system, and the plates C were positioned outside the room that was sanitized. Following sanitization, air and surface sampling was conducted, after which, swabs were processed for bacterial and fungal enumeration. The results showed that the air sanitization system had good efficacy for both bacteria and fungi in the air and on stainless-steel plates, particularly for the A plates.
