RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Therapeutic response in depression is a major challenge since more than one third of patients are not in remission after two attempts of antidepressant treatment and will present a treatment-resistant depression. In order to better adapt therapeutic strategies for treatment-resistant patients, predictive indicators and markers of therapeutic response still need to be identified. In parallel, patients with depression exhibit disturbances in cognitive functioning. This study aims to describe and compare cognitive performances collected at inclusion of patients presenting treatment-resistant depression who will be responders at 6 months to those of non-responders, and to evaluate the predictive value of cognitive indicators on clinical therapeutic response at 6 months after a therapeutic modification. METHODS: Observational study. Patients were evaluated at the clinical (HDRS and BDI-II) and cognitive levels using standardized tools assessing memory, executive functions, attention, and social cognition, prior to a change in antidepressant treatment. Six months after inclusion, they were reassessed and classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of therapeutic response, defined by a 50% improvement on HDRS and BDI-II. The cognitive scores collected at inclusion were then compared. Additionally, univariate logistic regression models were used. RESULTS: Thirty patients were included in this study. Only 13 could be evaluated at 6 months. Among these patients, four had responded to the new treatment while nine were non-responders. Both groups of patients presented deviant cognitive performances compared to norms on tests evaluating executive functions and attention. Statistical analyses did not reveal any difference between the cognitive performances of responders and non-responders at 6 months. Regression analyses showed no association between cognitive scores and therapeutic response at 6 months. CONCLUSION: Executive functioning plays a significant role in treatment-resistant depression. In order to improve the understanding and identification of subtypes of depression, cognitive indicators should be systematically integrated into future research.

RESUMO

Background: Awareness and development of nurse executives' leadership competencies has been considered a key strategy for the success of healthcare organizations. However, only a few studies about nurse executives' leadership competencies are available in the literature, and no study has been conducted about the topic within Saudi Arabian context. The aim of this study was to assess the leadership competencies of nurse executives and the predictors of these competencies. Methods: This quantitative study used a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design. The study recruited a total convenience sample of 136 nurse executives who voluntarily consented to participate. The respondents self-rated the online survey, "Leadership Competency Assessment Tool: Self-Assessment." Data collection was conducted between September 2022 and November 2022. Test of correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: The overall mean score of nurse executives' leadership competencies was 3.38 out of 5.0, which was below the level of having excellent leadership competencies. Four dimensions had mean scores below the level of having excellent leadership competencies, namely, communication and relationship building (3.48), knowledge of the healthcare environment (3.29), leadership (3.45), and business skills (3.15), while nurse executives had excellent leadership competencies only in the professionalism dimension (3.51). Age (p=0.04), highest educational attainment (p=0.01), current role (p<0.01) and length of experience (p=0.02) as nurse executive, monthly salary (p=0.03), nationality (p=0.04), and having seminars/trainings in leadership and management (p=0.01) were considered predictors of the leadership competencies of nurse executives. Conclusion: Nurse executives reported a low level of leadership competencies, thus implying necessary actions for improvement. There were personal factors that influenced the level of nurse executives' leadership competencies. To achieve quality outcomes and maintain a high level of nursing care in hospital organizations, these findings must be considered in planning strategies related to the improvement of the leadership competencies of nurse executives.

RESUMO

Executives' carbon cognition (ECC) is an important driving factor for enterprises to achieve carbon performance (CP) through low-carbon actions, but the existing research has not explored the mechanism between them. Based on the data of 440 Chinese listed companies from 2012 to 2021, we used text mining method to construct the index of ECC, and obtained noteworthy results through regression analysis. The results indicated that ECC has a significant positive impact on corporate low-carbon actions (CLA); CLA has a significant positive impact on CP; CLA plays a mediating role in the relationship between ECC and CP; in addition, firm size negatively moderates the positive impact of ECC on CLA; firm size negatively moderates the mediating effect of CLA on the relationship between ECC and CP. The research conclusions deepen the understanding of the relationship between ECC and CP in the context of carbon neutrality era, and provide theoretical guidance for guiding companies to actively implement low-carbon actions. At the same time, this study introduces the text mining method into the research of ECC, which provides a reference for future research in this field.

RESUMO

The study of top economic growth with the goal of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become an important issue in the world, and scholars have analyzed high-quality economic development(HED) influencing factors from many perspectives, but there are few studies on green finance(GF) and high-quality economic development(HED). we examine the logical link between green financing and high-quality economic development, as well as the transmission mechanism behind this relationship. Using data from 30 Chinese regions from 2011 to 2021, our empirical study shows that green financing may improve high-quality economic development. Several robustness tests show that this association exists. Furthermore, our findings indicate that more robust government governance and market synergy may promote green finance for high-quality economic development. Green finance can enhance high-quality economic development by minimizing resource mismatch and encouraging green technology advancement. Simultaneously, green finance for high-quality economic development is significantly heterogeneous. Green credit and green insurance are important forms of support for promoting high-quality economic development, with significantly higher impacts in the eastern regions than in the central and western regions. Our research offers policymakers insights on encouraging green finance growth in China.

RESUMO

Expectations for where and when work should take place changed radically for workers through the COVID-19 global pandemic. Now that COVID-19 no longer poses a significant safety threat for the typical worker, executives at many organizations are now expecting their employees to return to the office. The issues seem to revolve around perceived barriers to culture, collaboration, and innovation when employees are not present together in the office. Yet, many employees strongly resist a return to the office. They have experienced well-being, productivity, and autonomy benefits from a remote and hybrid work arrangement. Rigid return to office rules feel outdated, manipulative, and controlling to many employees. In the current article we explore expert opinion on the issues of culture, collaboration, and innovation. Specifically, we ask whether a return to office will improve these aspects of organizational functioning and we outline evidence that leads us to provide an answer these questions. Executives and managers may find these expert opinions useful in their consideration of workplace policies and guidelines for the use of remote, hybrid, and in office work arrangements in their organizations.

RESUMO

In the context of carbon peaking and carbon-neutral target, enterprises need to adjust their resource allocation and practice environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities. Previous literature ignores the resources and costs that enterprises may consume to improve ESG ratings, leading to an unclear relationship between ESG ratings and trade credit. We investigate how ESG ratings affect trade credit using the inverted U-shaped (U-shaped) moderating effect regression model. The result shows that ESG ratings have an inverted U-shaped relationship with trade credit. Information transparency moderates the curvilinear relationship between ESG ratings and trade credit, with higher information transparency flattening the shape of the inverted U-shaped curve and moving the inflection point to the left. Executives with overseas backgrounds significantly moderate the inverted U-shaped relationship between ESG ratings and trade credit. Executives with overseas backgrounds flatten the inverted U-shaped relationship, and the inflection point shifts to the right. Overall, our findings show that higher ESG ratings do not help enterprises to expand trade credit in emerging market countries. Higher ESG ratings consume more corporate resources and are more likely to become a tool for management self-interest.

RESUMO

The allocation of executives' environmental attention (EEA) is of great significance in promoting the green upgrading of industrial structures and achieving corporate green transformation. Based on upper echelon theory and the attention-based view, we use panel data of Chinese manufacturing companies from 2015 to 2020 to construct a two-way fixed effects model to explore the impact mechanism of EEA on corporate green transformation performance (CGTP). Baseline regression shows that EEA significantly improves CGTP. The reliability of findings is verified by reducing time windows, replacing the independent variable, expanding the data source, and adding missing variables. In the heterogeneity analysis, the positive effect of EEA on CGTP is significant for eastern companies and does not differ in the property rights grouping. After propensity score matching, environmental attribute grouping shows that the positive effect of EEA on CGTP is more significant for non-heavy polluters. Extended research shows that government subsidies have a positive moderating effect, while female executives play only a symbolic role. Moreover, green innovation activities have positive partial mediating effects. Green innovation is the best way to address environmental pollution and achieve corporate green transformation. Our research provides implications for decision-makers to allocate their attention, and thereby achieve green development appropriately.

RESUMO

Policy Points Hospital executives posit a number of rationales for system mergers which lack any basis in academic evidence. Decades of academic research question whether system combinations confer public benefits. Antitrust authorities need to continue to closely scrutinize these transactions. Recently, mergers of hospital systems that span different geographic markets are on the rise. Economists have alerted policymakers about the potential impacts such cross-market mergers may have on hospital prices. We suggest there are other reasons for concern that scholars have not often confonted. Cross-market mergers may be conducted for purely self-serving reasons of organizational growth that increases executive compensation. Combinations of sellers should have clear advantages to consumers. System executives and their boards should bear the burden of proof. Federal regulators and state attorney generals should be cognizant that rationales for cross-market systems advanced by merging parties are unlikely to be operative or dominant in merger decision making. Policymakers should be careful about passing legislation that encourages hospitals to consolidate. CONTEXT: There is a growing trend of combinations among hospital systems that operate in different geographic markets known as cross-market mergers. Economists have analyzed these broader systems in terms of their anticompetitive behavior and pricing power over insurers. This paper evaluates the benefits advanced by these new hospital systems that speak to a different set of issues not usually studied: increased efficiencies, new capabilities, operating synergies, and addressing health inequities. The paper thus "looks under the hood" of these emerging, cross-market systems to assess what value they might bestow and upon whom. METHODS: The paper examines recently announced cross-market mergers in terms of their supposed benefits, as expressed by the systems' executives as well as by industry consultants. These presumed benefits are then evaluated against existing evidence regarding hospital system outcomes. FINDINGS: Advocates of cross-market hospital mergers cite a host of benefits. Research suggests these benefits are nonexistent. Additional evidence suggests other motives may be at play in the formation of cross-market mergers that have nothing to do with efficiencies, synergies, or community benefits. Instead these mergers may be self-serving efforts by system chief executive officers (CEOs) to boost their compensation. CONCLUSIONS: Cross-market hospital mergers may yield no benefits to the hospitals involved or the communities in which they operate. The boards of hospital systems that engage in these cross-market mergers need to exercise greater diligence over the actions of their CEOs.

RESUMO

The input and deployment of human resources, such as senior executives and the core employees involved in different innovation processes, is key to developing enterprise innovation activities. Under the same framework, it is crucial to explore how employee equity incentive and senior executives' psychological capital affect enterprise innovation. This paper's research sample comprises listed companies that implemented equity incentives in the A-share market from 2010 to 2021, examining the relationship between executive psychological capital, and enterprise innovation. This study found that: (1) Employee equity incentive and executives' psychological capital can significantly improve the quality of innovation output while promoting enterprises to increase the quantity of innovation outputs; (2) Executive psychological capital contributes to the intermediary effect between employee equity incentive and enterprise innovation; (3) R&D investment has a positive moderating effect on employee equity incentive, senior executives' psychological capital and enterprise innovation; (4) The innovation incentive effect brought by the implementation of stock options by enterprises is more significant, which also makes the psychological capital of executives maintain a positive role in enterprise innovation; (5) In addition, the positive effects of employee equity incentive and executive psychological capital on enterprise innovation are affected by different property rights. The positive effects of employee equity incentive and executive psychological capital on enterprise innovation in state-owned enterprises are not high.

RESUMO

The Environmental Cooperation System (ECS) is a new exploration of the government's spatial environmental policy to meet the requirements of green and sustainable development, so it is very important to scientifically evaluate its green innovation effect. Based on China's A-share listed companies from 2006 to 2021, from the perspective of corporate ESG performance, we apply the multi-dimensional fixed-effects difference-in-differences (DID) model, and empirically test the impact, mechanism, and heterogeneity of the Environmental Cooperation System of Shenzhen-Dongguan-Huizhou Metropolis (ECS-SDHM) on corporate green innovation. It found that ECS-SDHM can significantly improve corporate green innovation, and the policy effect is more significant in the private enterprise group. Secondly, we use ESG rating score and decomposition indicators to deeply analyze the green innovation effect mechanism of ECS-SDHM from the perspective of ESG performance. The results show that ECS-SDHM can enhance corporate green innovation by significantly improving corporate ESG performance, environmental governance, and social governance. Further research found that both corporate environmental social responsibility and executives' overseas backgrounds can positively moderate the green innovation effect of ECS-SDHM by positively moderating the ESG performance mechanism.

RESUMO

Enterprises have emerged as primary actors in environmental protection owing to the increasingly severe global energy crisis and environmental pollution. Companies can reduce operational costs, achieve environmental social responsibility, and enhance their green image by increasing their green investments. Simultaneously, companies can gain support from investors, governments, and other stakeholders for improving their sustainable development. This study uses fixed-effects regression models to analyze the impact of green investment on corporate sustainability in Chinese listed companies for the period from 2010 to 2020. It also investigates the moderating effects of government environmental subsidies, investor attention, and executives' overseas experience on the relationship between green investment and corporate sustainability. The data used in this study were not only obtained from the China Stock Market & Accounting Research (CSMAR) database but also collected manually from the annual reports and social responsibility reports of listed companies using web crawler technology. And the robustness test was conducted by removing the epidemic year and replacing the range of independent variables and 2SLs. This study uses Stata 17.0 to filter and process the data. The results show that green investment can significantly improve the sustainability of enterprises; besides, government subsidies, investors' attention, and executives' overseas experience all play a positive role in moderating the positive effect of green investment on the sustainable development of enterprises. Further analysis of this study finds that the moderating effect is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises and highly polluting enterprises. This study contributes to broadening the theory related to the green development of enterprises and environmental governance and provides theoretical support for enterprises to make green investment decisions and green transformations.

RESUMO

Executives' unethical behaviour is a common phenomenon in business practice and a hot topic for academic research, which has a profound negative impact on the healthy development of our economy and society. In the past two decades, several scholars from different disciplines con-ducted theoretical research and practical explorations on the issue of senior executives' (un)ethical behaviour and achieved certain research results. However, the existing research in this field still has problems, such as a lack of systematic integration of research results, unclear research hotspots and unclear development directions. Thus, the present study through a bibliometric analysis, conducted a content coding of these 428 papers identified from 2000 to 2020, constructed a theoretical framework by inductively identifying the corresponding concepts. By reviewing the progress of existing research topics, this study summarised a research framework of executives' unethical behaviour from the perspectives of the antecedents, the behaviour itself and the consequences of unethical behaviour. The study further proposed future research trends and recommendations for conducting research on executives' unethical behaviour under emerging market scenarios. The research results provide new ideas for developing the theory of executives' unethical behaviour and promote the in-depth development of the research on executives' unethical behaviour in the context of emerging markets.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to enhance understanding of the collaboration between chairs of nurse councils (CNCs) and members of executive hospital boards (BM) from a relational leadership perspective. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors used a qualitative and interpretive methodology. The authors study the daily interactions of BM and CNCs of seven Dutch hospitals through a relational leadership lens. The authors used a combination of observations, interviews and document analysis. The author's qualitative analysis was used to grasp the process of collaborating between BM and CNCs. FINDINGS: Knowing each other, relating with and relating to are distinct but intertwined processes that influence the collaboration between BM and CNC. The absence of conflict is also regarded as a finding in this paper. Combined together, they show the importance of a relational process perspective to understand the complexity of collaboration in hospitals. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Collaboration between professional groups in hospitals is becoming more important due to increasing interdependence. This is a consequence of the complexity in organizing qualitative care. Nevertheless, research on the process of collaborating between nurse councils (NCs) and executive hospital boards is scarce. Furthermore, the understanding of the workings of boards, in general, is limited. The relational process perspective and the combination of observations, interviewing and document analysis proved valuable in this study and is underrepresented in leadership research. This process perspective is a valuable addition to skills- and competencies-focused leadership literature.

RESUMO

Executive characteristics have a significant impact on corporate decision-making, corporate sustainable behavior, and stock market performance, which may influence the corporations' sustainable development in the long run. The role of returnee talents in the corporate sustainable development has received extensive academic attention. Using data of Chinese A-share listed companies over the period of 2008-2018, we find that there is a negative relationship between executives' foreign experience and stock price synchronicity. We also prove that corporate social responsibility (CSR) has a significant mediating effect on the relationship between returnee executives and stock price synchronicity. The returnee executives tend to pursue long-term sustainable activities and improve CSR engagement quality, thereby reducing stock price synchronicity. Our extended analysis reveals that the benefit of returnee executives is more pronounced for non-SOEs and for firms located in regions with a low degree of marketization. This study has some implications for the Chinese firms in relation to their CSR information disclosure behavior, and it gives suggestions to strengthen capital market efficiency for the sustainable development of corporations.

RESUMO

Innovative methods of diagnosis and prevention play a key role in the survival of healthcare systems as well as the wellbeing of patients. Effective healthcare management is a critical factor in implementing hospital innovation. Healthcare executive (HE) personal and job characteristics such as age and seniority have been found to affect innovative decision-making. However, no study has yet investigated age and seniority effects on the propensity to implement innovation in health prevention strategies. This study fills the literature gap by providing evidence for the effect of HE age and seniority on the implementation of innovative methods for diagnosis and prevention. Predicated on 57 in-depth interviews with HEs, we employ mixed methods research, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the model's goodness-of-fit. Results show that while HE age and number of years in the organization positively affect job tenure, job tenure, in turn, negatively affects willingness to implement innovative methods of diagnosis and prevention in hospitals. This study extends the Upper-Echelon Theory to health workforce management. Practical implications are discussed.

RESUMO

This study explores how the academic experience of executives affects green innovation. Using data on executive academic experience from a sample of Chinese listed companies, we explore the relationship between executive academic experience and green innovation using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. We find that executive academic experience has a positive impact on green innovation. We also investigate the moderating effect of managerial discretionary factors organizational slack, nature of property rights, and degree of market competition. The results show that organizational slack positively moderates the relationship between senior managers' academic experience and green innovation, and this positive relationship is more significant in state-owned enterprises. The degree of market competition had a negative moderating effect on the positive relationship between academic experience of senior managers and green innovation. Improved general competence and concern for the environment are two possible mechanisms by which senior managers' academic experience affects green innovation. Our findings suggest that academic experience of senior managers is an important factor for green innovation in emerging market firms.

RESUMO

With the growing complexity of the U.S. health care system, highly motivated medical directors with strong leadership skills are vital to the success of health care facilities. Presently, there are no articles assessing a plastic surgeon's qualifications for the role of medical director. In addition, there is a paucity of literature comparing the responsibilities of medical directors across various types of health care institutions. Herein, we outline why plastic surgeons have the unique skillset to succeed in this role and highlight the differences between medical director positions across the vast landscape of health care. While the intricacies of this position vary greatly across different landscapes of the health care industry, successful medical directors lead by following a set of universal principles predisposing them for success. Plastic surgeons innately exhibit a subset of particular traits deeming them suitable candidates for the medical director position. While transitioning from the role of a surgeon to that of a medical director does require some show of adaptation, plastic surgeons are ultimately highly likely to find intrinsic benefit from serving as a medical director.
