Introduction: There is a growing body of literature on gender bias in letters of recommendation (LORs) in academic medicine and the negative effect of bias on promotion and career advancement. Thus, increasing knowledge about gender bias and developing skills to mitigate it is important for advancing gender equity in medicine. This workshop aims to provide participants with knowledge about linguistic bias (focused on gender), how to recognize it, and strategies to apply to mitigate it when writing LORs. Methods: We developed an interactive 60-minute workshop for faculty and graduate medical education program directors consisting of didactics, reflection exercises, and group activities. We used a postworkshop survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze Likert-scale questions and a thematic content analysis for open-ended prompts. Results: We presented the workshop four times (two local and two national conferences) with one in-person and one virtual format for each. There were 50 participants who completed a postworkshop survey out of 74 total participants (68% response rate). Ninety-nine percent of participants felt the workshop met its educational objectives, and 100% felt it was a valuable use of their time. Major themes described for intended behavior change included utilization of the gender bias calculator, mindful use and balance of agentic versus communal traits, closer attention to letter length, and dissemination of this knowledge to colleagues. Discussion: This workshop was an effective method for helping participants recognize gender bias when writing LORs and learn strategies to mitigate it.

BACKGROUND: Faculty development programs are crucial for promoting continuous learning, enhancing teaching effectiveness, and encouraging professional growth among medical educators. Problem-based learning was introduced as a teaching strategy in our Faculty of Medicine in 2007. Thereafter, several rounds of a faculty development program were conducted to help teachers recognize their role as facilitators and assess areas for improvement. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study with a sample of 284 third-year medical students answering a questionnaire and 21 faculty members participating in focus groups. A validated 13-item questionnaire was used to investigate the students' evaluation of their tutors' performance in problem-based learning. Three sessions were then conducted with faculty members involved in problem-based learning to gain in-depth insights into their experiences and perspectives. RESULTS: The mean performance ranking for tutors awarded by the students was above halfway. There was a significant positive correlation between tutors' performance ranking and all five of the learning approaches examined herein: constructive/active learning, self-directed learning, contextual learning, collaborative learning, and intra-personal behavior (p < 0.05). The data from the focus groups were analyzed under five broad themes: tutors' insights into their strengths and weaknesses, challenges in conducting problem-based learning, tutors' ways of preparing for problem-based learning, feedback, and suggestions for improving problem-based learning workshops. CONCLUSIONS: This study recommends improvements and future directions for advanced program evaluation. Faculty development programs can be tailored to effectively address students and faculty members' goals and needs, which can benefit the teaching and learning process and foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.

Introduction: Patient encounters perceived to be challenging are common and contribute to both suboptimal patient health outcomes and provider burnout. A trauma-informed care (TIC) approach to these encounters is critical, as many of the characteristics associated with challenging patient encounters can be linked to a history of trauma exposure. Methods: Our team created and delivered a 1-hour synchronous virtual session intended to bolster provider knowledge of TIC principles and their application to challenging adolescent encounters. Participants were all faculty and staff engaged in pediatric primary care at an urban academic center, including physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and social workers. The content was rooted in adult learning principles and included didactic components anchored to case-based learning with facilitated group discussions and opportunities for reflection. We used paired pre- and postsession self-assessments of provider knowledge, confidence, and practice related to TIC using Likert-scale and free-text questions. Descriptive statistics and a paired t test were used to determine the impact of the session on these metrics. Results: In 24 paired surveys, there were statistically significant increases (p ≤ .001) in participant perceived knowledge, confidence, and practice, with 100% of participants having a statistically significant improvement in one or more of these domains. There were also strongly positive Likert-scale and free-text responses regarding content relevance and delivery. Discussion: We demonstrate that a brief session can create improvement in pediatric providers' perceived knowledge about the application of TIC principles to challenging adolescent encounters as well as confidence in their ability to put these into practice.

Background: Education in the health sciences is transitioning to a student-centered approach that has impacted all components of educational institutions: classroom design, faculty training, selection of learners and faculty. Activity: Using metaphor analyses, this study investigates the effects on instructor beliefs and values about teaching by having a series of professional development workshops in either a traditional lecture hall or in a collaborative/engaged learning-designed classroom. At the conclusion of the series, both sets of participants were invited to make a free-hand drawing of their "conception" of teaching and label the drawing that represents the conception. Drawings and metaphors were analyzed by non-study raters, and all metaphors were categorized into one of three domains: teacher-centered, learner-centered, learner-driven. Results: Faculty who completed the series inside a collaborative learning classroom perceived their roles primarily in the learner-centered domains 37 (59.67%), whereas those that completed it in the lecture hall perceived their roles as primarily teacher-centered 62 (84.93%). Discussion: The authors discuss the implications for faculty development during this transition.

PURPOSE: Current faculty development (FD) programs are mostly limited to medical education and often lack a comprehensive and systematic structure. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the current status and needs of FD programs in medical schools to provide a basis for establishing FD strategies. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of medical school FD staff and professors regarding FD. Frequency, regression, and qualitative content analyses were conducted. FD programs were categorized into the classification frameworks. RESULTS: A total of 17 FD staff and 256 professors at 37 medical schools participated. There are gaps between the internal and external FD programs offered by medical schools and their needs, and there are gaps between the programs the professors participated in and their needs. Recent internal and external FD programs in medical schools have focused on educational methods, student assessment, and education in general. Medical schools have a high need for leadership and self-development, and student assessment. Furthermore, professors have a high need for leadership and self-development, and research. The number of participants, topics, and needs of FD programs varied depending on the characteristics of individual professors. CONCLUSION: Medical schools should expand their FD programs to meet the needs of individuals and the changing demands of modern medical education. The focus should be on comprehensive and responsive programs that cover various topics, levels, and methods. Tailored programs that consider professors' professional roles, career stages, and personal interests are essential for effective FD.

Background: Faculty development is important but often limited by conflict with ongoing responsibilities. The Oregon Health & Science University Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine schedules more faculty physicians to work on Wednesdays, with nonclinical time in the morning and a clinical assignment in the afternoon, to facilitate a resident physician academic half-day (AHD). We designed a novel faculty development course to run in the mornings of the AHD using Kern's 6-step approach to curriculum development and hypothesized that it would be feasible and satisfactory. Methods: A needs assessment was performed. Two experts in medical education developed the curriculum and sought faculty with medical education training to lead sessions. Five participants completed pre-intervention, daily session, and post-intervention surveys. Satisfaction was evaluated by surveys. Feasibility was evaluated by session attendance and surveys. Kirkpatrick's model for program evaluation was used, and a thematic analysis was performed. Results: All participants responded "Strongly Agree" to all participant satisfaction post-intervention questions. All participants were able to meet the >50% attendance goal, only missing sessions when pre-call, post-call, on vacation, or ill. All participants reported changes in behavior and reported developing their clinician educator professional identities. One participant reported re-affirming their commitment to academic medicine. Conclusions: This faculty development pilot course provided during work hours was feasible, and participants were highly satisfied. In addition, thematic analysis suggests that the course helped faculty develop a clinician educator professional identity and changed their behavior. Future work will include a qualitative study to understand the impact on participant behavior and professional identity formation.

The provision of optimum health care services requires collaboration of health care professionals in integrated interprofessional (IP) teams. This guide addresses the practical aspects of establishing and delivering pre-licensure IP programs to prepare graduates of health professional programs to work in teams and wider collaboration, and consequently enhance the quality of health care. The main updated IP frameworks are presented to highlight commonalities that represent the essential competencies and outcomes of programs implementing interprofessional education (IPE). We discuss how these may be adapted to the local context, and present examples of models of implementation to guide the initial steps of establishing similar programs. Examples of pre-licensure IP practice-based learning, such as community-based, simulation-based, student-run and led clinics, and interprofessional training wards, and post-licensure interprofessional learning (IPL), are described. We consider assessment of IPL along the continuum of learning IP. This guide also emphasises the need to tailor faculty development programs for local contexts and consider factors affecting sustainability such as funding and accreditation. We finish with the governance of IP programs and how global IP networks may support interprofessional practice-based learning from development to delivery.

Background: Physician clinical educators play important roles in teaching, providing feedback, and evaluating trainees, but they often have variable preparation and competing demands on their time that make universal participation in workshops, seminars, or short courses designed to foster these skillsets inefficient or impossible. Methods: We designed and implemented a 52-week synchronous curriculum designed to address faculty opportunities to improve teaching skills, feedback for residents and medical students, and evaluation skills, which were delivered using marketing automation tools, including text messaging and email. We evaluated the programmatic impact and feasibility of using the implementation science framework. Results: Over a 104-week evaluation period, there were at least 10,499 total content impressions and 4558 unique recipients, indicating the significant reach of this program to approximately 120 faculty members. Faculty engagement with continuing education materials remained stable or increased over the 2-year evaluation period, indicating that programs like ours can have sustainable impacts. Resident evaluations of faculty across the six key domains also improved after the implementation of the program. Conclusions: Our experience with digital marketing tools reflects that they can be used to deliver impactful curricular content to faculty for continuing educational purposes and that faculty can use these resources in a sustainable way. However, because of the incomplete reach with any single communication, this type of content delivery is not appropriate for isolation as a material of critical importance. More research is needed to identify the best practices and additional education-related uses of this technology.

BACKGROUND: How healthcare professionals understand and use concepts of social and cognitive capabilities will influence their behaviour and their understanding of others' behaviour. Differing understandings of concepts might lead to healthcare professionals not acting in accordance with other healthcare professionals' expectations. Therefore, part of the problem concerning errors and adverse incidents concerning social and cognitive capabilities might be due to varying understandings of concepts among different healthcare professionals. This study aimed to examine the variations in how educators at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation talk about social and cognitive capabilities. METHODS: The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and directed content analysis. The codes for the analysis process were derived from existing non-technical skills models and used to show variations in how the participants talk about the same concepts. RESULTS: Educators with a background as nurses and physicians, talked differently about leadership and decision-making, with the nurses paying greater attention to group dynamics and external factors when describing both leadership and decision-making, whereas physicians focus on their individual efforts. CONCLUSION: We found patterned differences in how the participants described leadership and decision-making that may be related to participants' professional training/background. As it can create misunderstandings and unsafe situations if nurses and physicians disagree on the meaning of leadership and decision-making (without necessarily recognising this difference), it could be beneficial to educate healthcare professionals to be aware of the specificity of their own concepts, and to communicate what exactly they mean by using a particular concept, e.g. "I want you to coordinate tasks" instead of "I want better leadership".

BACKGROUND: The provision of high-quality midwifery education relies on well-prepared educators. Faculty members need professional development and support to deliver quality midwifery education. AIM: To identify development needs of midwifery faculty in low- and middle-income countries of the Asia Pacific region, to inform program content and the development of guidelines for faculty development programs. METHODS: An online learning needs assessment survey was conducted with midwifery faculty from low- and middle-income countries in the Asia Pacific Region. Quantitative survey data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Textual data were condensed using a general inductive approach to summarise responses and establish links between research aim and findings. FINDINGS: One hundred and thirty-one faculty completed the survey and a high need for development in all aspects of faculty practice was identified. Development in research and publication was the top priority for faculty. Followed closely by leadership and management development, and then more traditional activities of teaching and curriculum development. Preferred mode of program delivery was a blended learning approach. DISCUSSION: Historically, programs of faculty development have primarily focussed on learning and teaching methods and educational development. Yet contemporary faculty members are expected to function in roles including scholarly activities of research and publication, institutional leadership and management, and program design and implementation. Unfortunately, programs of development are rarely based on identified need and fail to consider the expanded role expectation of contemporary faculty practice. CONCLUSION: Future midwifery faculty development programs should address the identified need for development in all expected faculty roles.

Editing services within academic health centers are uncommon, and few studies have reported on their impact. In this article, we describe our medical writing center's editing service for faculty and trainees at a pediatric teaching hospital and associated outcomes of scholarly products (e.g., manuscripts and grants) over an 8-year period. Data for manuscripts and grant proposals edited by the writing center from 2015 through 2022 were collected electronically from our service request database. Outcome data on publications and grant proposals were regularly collected up to 12 months post-submission. Users were also asked if the writing center edits were helpful, improved readability, and if they planned to use the service in the future. From 2015 through 2022, the writing center received 697 requests, 88.4% to edit a document. Of the documents edited, 81.3% of manuscripts and 44.4% of grant proposals were successfully published or funded. When rating their experience, 97.8% of respondents rated the edits "helpful," 96.7% indicated the edits "improved readability," and 99.3% stated they planned to use the writing center in the future. Our results showed steady use of the writing center and high satisfaction with services. A writing center can be an effective tool to support psychology faculty development.

BACKGROUND: Although extensive research exists about students' clinical learning, there is a lack of translation and integration of this knowledge into clinical educational practice. As a result, improvements may not be implemented and thus contribute to students' learning. The present study aimed to explore the nature of clinical faculty members' learning related to how they apply research about student autonomy. METHODS: A course, "Designing learning for students' development of autonomy in clinical practice" was conducted for faculty responsible for students' clinical education. Within the frame of the course the participants designed a project and planned how they would implement it in their clinical context. Fourteen clinical faculty members participated in the study. The participants' interpretation of the educational intervention, which combines complex theory with the equally complex clinical practice, was explored by studying how the participants' approaches and understanding of the facilitation of autonomy were manifested in their projects. The projects in the form of reports and oral presentations were analyzed using qualitative content analysis together with an abductive approach. FINDINGS: One identified domain was "Characteristics of the design and content of the projects". This domain was signified by two themes with different foci: Preparing the soil for facilitating student autonomy; and Cultivating opportunities for students to actively strive for autonomy. A second identified domain, "Embracing the meaning of facilitating autonomy" was connected to participants understanding of theories underlying how to support the development of autonomy. This domain contained two themes: Connection between activities and autonomy is self-evident and Certain factors can explain and facilitate development of autonomy. CONCLUSION: Education directed to strategic clinical faculty members to develop evidence-based approaches to student learning can be productive. To succeed there is a need to emphasize faculty members individual understanding of actual research as well as learning theories in general. Faculty trying to reinforce changes are dependent on their own mandate, the structure in the clinic, and recognition of their work in the clinical context. To achieve a potential continuity and sustainability of implemented changes the implementation processes must be anchored throughout the actual organization.

BACKGROUND: Themes of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) arise commonly within healthcare simulation. Though faculty development guidance and standards include increasing reference to EDI, information on how faculty might develop in this area is lacking. With increasingly formal expectations being placed on simulation educators to adhere to EDI principles, we require a better understanding of the developmental needs of educators and clear guidance so that teams can work towards these expectations. Our study had two aims: Firstly, to explore the extent to which an existing competency framework for medical teachers to teach ethnic and cultural diversity is relevant for simulation educator competency in EDI, and secondly, informed by the data gathered, to construct a modified competency framework in EDI for simulation educators. METHODS: We engaged our participants (10 simulation faculty) in a 5-month period of enhanced consideration of EDI, using the SIM-EDI tool to support faculty debriefing conversations focussed on EDI within a pre-existing programme of simulation. We interviewed participants individually at two timepoints and analysed transcript data using template analysis. We employed an existing competency framework for medical teachers as the initial coding framework. Competencies were amended for the simulation context, modified based on the data, and new themes were added inductively, to develop a new developmental framework for simulation educators. RESULTS: Interview data supported the relevance of the existing competency framework to simulation. Modifications made to the framework included the incorporation of two inductively coded themes ('team reflection on EDI' and 'collaboration'), as well as more minor amendments to better suit the healthcare simulation context. The resultant Developmental Framework for Simulation Educators in EDI outlines 10 developmental areas we feel are required to incorporate consideration of EDI into simulation programmes during the design, delivery and debriefing phases. We propose that the framework acts as a basis for simulation faculty development in EDI. CONCLUSIONS: Simulation faculty development in EDI is important and increasingly called for by advisory bodies. We present a Developmental Framework for Simulation Educators in EDI informed by qualitative data. We encourage simulation teams to incorporate this framework into faculty development programmes and report on their experiences.

Nursing education is shifting toward competency-based education (CBE) in line with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's (AACN) 2021 Essentials. This pedagogical shift from knowledge-based leaner outcomes to competency-based learner and program outcomes affects how faculty teach, how students learn, and how programs allocate resources to support this change. The initial move toward CBE necessitates scrutiny of current curricula and alignment of curriculum, teaching strategies, and assessment tactics framed within the ten domains of the Essentials. Drawing on the Donabedian quality improvement framework, one school of nursing's curricular revisions project team discusses their strategies and challenges in implementing the AACN Essentials, illustrating the structural, procedural, and initial outcomes of adopting the Essentials across programs and specialties. Key to this approach is engaging all relevant stakeholders and mapping current curricula to the Essentials' many competencies and subcompetencies. This work informs curricular revisions and fosters faculty engagement and creativity. Lessons learned highlight a critical need for ongoing faculty development and use of learner-centric pedagogies to achieve students' competency development and practice readiness. This article offers insights and guidance for nursing programs embracing CBE and aligning with AACN Essentials.

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to present the development of a longitudinal curriculum for medical students that is rooted in the particularity of the medical sciences and that aims to build and strengthen medical students' scientific skills and use thereof in clinical practice. Methods: The curriculum development was initiated based on students' feedback on the initial curriculum. To improve and expand the curriculum appropriately, a needs assessment, a literature review to define science specific to the medical sciences and practice, and an analysis of national and international curricula were performed. The curriculum development followed the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act). Results: The curriculum extends across the entire medical study programme from semesters 1 to 10. It consists of the seminar series on basic conduct and the epistemological groundings of science, scientific methods in medical research and health sciences, statistics and the scientific internship. Up to the sixth semester, the focus is on the acquisition of skills and abilities to work on and carry out a concrete research project; starting in semester seven, the critical evaluation and application of research results in everyday clinical practice are introduced. The curriculum is taught by epidemiologists, anthropologists, statisticians and public health scholars. Starting in semester seven, seminars are generally taught together with clinicians as tandem teaching. The curriculum is regularly assessed and adjusted. Conclusions: The Brandenburg Scientific Curriculum can be seen as a model of a longitudinal curriculum to teach scientific thinking and acting. One that is at the same time highly integrated in the medical curriculum overall. A central coordination point seems to be necessary to coordinate the teaching content and to ensure that teachers are interconnected. Furthermore, a complex curriculum in scientific methodology requires a set of teachers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. To ensure equally high-quality education, the variability of research projects and faculty must be taken into account by establishing generally applicable evaluation criteria and fostering faculty development, and providing all students supporting courses throughout the research project.

PURPOSE: Dental faculty enter academia, after a career in practice or directly from school, without any formal education training. Faculty development programs have been designed based on survey needs assessments, but not on in-depth descriptions of junior faculty transition experiences. The purpose of this research project is to describe the transition experiences of dental faculty from clinician to educator within the last 5 years. METHODS: A qualitative multiple case study approach from an emic perspective was used. An emic approach is an analysis from the perspective of one who participates in the group being studied. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 junior dental faculty. Thematic analysis identified common themes in the data through the lens of the social cognitive career theory. RESULTS: Three salient themes were extracted from the data: guidance, job satisfaction, and motivating factors. Guidance was the main theme with participants revealing their need for more formal preparation regarding teaching, formal mentorship, and career progression goals. Participants find academia highly rewarding, and a unique finding was that physical injury was a major factor to entering academia. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that junior dental faculty members feel unprepared for their teaching role and highlights the benefits of mentorship in helping them develop their vocational goals and advance their careers. This study illuminates why clinicians choose to leave clinical practice, the preparation they receive, the areas in which they feel unprepared, and how they develop their teaching skills. These insights can help academic institutions better support their faculty and improve student learning outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Primary care in the US faces challenges with clinician recruitment, retention, and burnout, with further workforce shortages predicted in the next decade. Team-based care can be protective against clinician burnout, and opportunities for interprofessional education (IPE) on professional development and leadership could encourage primary care transformation. Despite an increasingly important role in the primary care workforce, IPE initiatives training physician assistants (PAs) alongside physicians are rare. We describe the design, curriculum, and outcomes from an interprofessional primary care transformation fellowship for community-based primary care physicians and PAs. METHODS: The Community Primary Care Champions (CPCC) Fellowship was a one-year, part-time fellowship which trained nine PAs, fourteen physicians, and a behavioralist with at least two years of post-graduate clinical experience in six content pillars: quality improvement (QI), wellness and burnout, mental health, social determinants of health, medical education, and substance use disorders. The fellowship included a recurring schedule of monthly activities in self-study, lectures, mentoring, and community expert evening discussions. Evaluation of the fellowship included pre, post, and one-year follow-up self-assessments of knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in the six content areas, pre- and post- wellness surveys, lecture and discussion evaluations, and midpoint and exit focus groups. RESULTS: Fellows showed significant improvement in 24 of 28 self-assessment items across all content areas post-fellowship, and in 16 of 18 items one-year post-fellowship. They demonstrated reductions in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization post-fellowship and increased confidence in working in interprofessional teams post-fellowship which persisted on one-year follow-up assessments. All fellows completed QI projects and four presented their work at national conferences. Focus group data showed that fellows experienced collaborative, meaningful professional development that was relevant to their clinical work. They appreciated the flexible format and inclusion of interprofessional community experts in evening discussions. CONCLUSIONS: The CPCC fellowship fostered an interprofessional community of practice that provided an effective IPE experience for physicians and PAs. The learning activities, and particularly the community expert discussions, allowed for a flexible, relevant experience, resulting in personal and professional growth along with increased confidence working within interprofessional teams.

Background: Effective implementation of new curricula requires faculty to be knowledgeable about curriculum goals and have the appropriate pedagogical skills to implement the curriculum, even more so if the new curriculum is being deployed at multiple institutions. In this paper, we describe the process of creating a common faculty development program to train cross-institutional faculty developers to support the implementation of national harmonized medicine and nursing curricula. Methods: A five-step approach was used, including a cross-institutional needs assessment survey for faculty development needs, the development of a generic faculty development program, the identification and training of cross-institutional faculty educators, and the implementation of cross-institutional faculty capacity-building workshops. Results: A list of common cross-cutting faculty development needs for teaching and learning was identified from the needs assessment survey and used to develop an accredited, cross-institutional faculty development program for competency-based learning and assessment. A total of 24 cross-institutional faculty developers were identified and trained in 8 core learning and assessment workshops. A total of 18 cross-institutional and 71 institutional workshops were conducted, of which 1292 faculty members and 412 residents were trained, and three cross-institutional educational research projects were implemented. Conclusion: The success attained in this study shows that the use of cross-institutional faculty developers is a viable model and sustainable resource that can be used to support the implementation of harmonized national curricula.

In many contexts, responsibility for exit-level assessment design and implementation in undergraduate medical programmes lies with individuals who convene clinical clerkships. Their assessment practice has significant consequences for students' learning and the patients and communities that graduates will serve. Interventions to enhance assessment must involve these assessors, yet little is known about factors influencing their assessment practice. The purpose of this study was to explore factors that influence assessment practice of clerkship convenors in three varied low-and-middle income contexts in the global South. Taking assessment practice as a behaviour, Health Behaviour Theory (HBT) was deployed as a theoretical framework to explore, describe and explain assessor behaviour. Thirty-one clinician-educators responsible for designing and implementing high-stakes clerkship assessment were interviewed in South Africa and Mexico. Interacting personal and contextual factors influencing clinician-educator assessment intention and action were identified. These included attitude, influenced by impact and response appraisal, and perceived self-efficacy; along with interpersonal, physical and organisational, and distal contextual factors. Personal competencies and conducive environments supported intention to action transition. While previous research has typically explored factors in isolation, the HBT framing enabled a systematic and coherent account of assessor behaviour. These findings add a particular contextual perspective to understanding assessment practice, yet also resonate with and extend existing work that predominantly emanates from high-income contexts in the global North. These findings provide a foundation for the planning of assessment change initiatives, such as targeted, multi-factorial faculty development.
