Abstract Floating structures, both natural and artificial, attract fish by providing shelter, feeding areas, and nesting sites. Occupancy can be either more permanent, leading to a gradual gathering of the assembly, or transient, occurring randomly. The ability of an attractor to hold a fish assemblage may depend on the availability of habitat resources in the environment. New artificial attractors are more valuable when natural ones are scarce. Additionally, fish characteristics play a role; young and small fishes may need new habitat for shelter more than adult fish. As aquatic herbaceous areas are abundant during high water, coinciding with the period of fish reproduction, they are particularly relevant for juveniles. We constructed fish attractors composed of natural materials to investigate the structure of fish assemblages during the flood of an Amazonian floodplain lake. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that assembly processes during the flood period would be random, with a predominance of juveniles in the attractors. We collected fish at intervals of 5, 15, and 30 days, resulting in 39 observations, and classified them as either adult or juvenile. Species composition was compared among treatments using Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA). The assembly process was tested through species co-occurrence patterns employing null models and the C-score index. The proportion of juveniles and adults was compared using a Chi-square test. Species composition remained consistent throughout the experiment. The assembly was random, with a prevalence of juveniles, possibly serving only as temporary shelter and feeding areas. Our study contributes to understanding the role of habitat availability for floodplain fishes during high waters. The results suggest that floating attractors and new habitats may be more valuable for the juveniles than adult fish and can be used as a management strategy for population recovery, especially when floating herbaceous habitats are scarce.


Resumo As estruturas flutuantes, naturais ou artificiais, atraem os peixes, fornecendo abrigo, áreas de alimentação e locais de nidificação. A ocupação pode ser mais permanente, resultando em um recolhimento gradativo da assembleia, ou transitória, ocorrendo aleatoriamente. A capacidade de um atrator de manter uma assembleia de peixes pode depender da disponibilidade de recursos de habitat no ambiente. Novos atratores artificiais são mais valiosos quando os naturais são escassos. Além disso, as características dos peixes desempenham um papel, já que peixes jovens e pequenos podem necessitar de novos habitats como abrigo mais do que peixes adultos. Como as áreas com herbáceas aquáticas são abundantes durante as cheias, coincidindo com o período de reprodução dos peixes, elas são especialmente relevantes para peixes juvenis. Construímos atratores de peixes compostos de material natural para investigar a estrutura das assembleias de peixes durante a cheia de um lago de várzea amazônico, a fim de testar a hipótese de que durante o período de cheia, os processos de montagem seriam aleatórios e com predominância de juvenis nos atratores. Nosso estudo contribui para entender o papel da disponibilidade de novos habitats para peixes de várzea durante a cheia. Os resultados sugerem que atratores flutuantes e novos habitats podem ser mais valiosos para os peixes jovens do que para adultos e podem ser usados como estratégia de manejo para a recuperação populacional, especialmente quando habitats de herbáceas flutuantes são escassos.

We report on a field demonstration of a rover-based drilling mission to search for biomolecular evidence of life in the arid core of the Atacama Desert, Chile. The KREX2 rover carried the Honeybee Robotics 1 m depth The Regolith and Ice Drill for Exploration of New Terrains (TRIDENT) drill and a robotic arm with scoop that delivered subsurface fines to three flight prototype instruments: (1) The Signs of Life Detector (SOLID), a protein and biomolecule analyzer based on fluorescence sandwich microarray immunoassay; (2) the Planetary In Situ Capillary Electrophoresis System (PISCES), an amino acid analyzer based on subcritical water extraction coupled to microchip electrophoresis analysis; and (3) a Wet Chemistry Laboratory cell to measure soluble ions using ion selective electrodes and chronopotentiometry. A California-based science team selected and directed drilling and sampling of three sites separated by hundreds of meters that included a light-toned basin area showing evidence of aqueous activity surrounded by a rocky desert pavement. Biosignatures were detected in basin samples collected at depths ranging from 20 to 80 cm but were not detected in the surrounding area. Subsurface stratigraphy of the units drilled was interpreted from drill sensor data as fine-scale layers of sand/clay sediments interspersed with layers of harder material in the basins and a uniform subsurface composed of course-to-fine sand in the surroundings. The mission timeline and number of commands sent to accomplish each activity were tracked. The deepest sample collected (80 cm) required 55 commands, including drilling and delivery to three instruments. Elapsed time required for drilling and sample handling was less than 3 hours to collect sample from 72 cm depth, including time devoted to recovery from a jammed drill. The experiment demonstrated drilling, sample transfer technologies, and instruments that accomplished successful detection of biomolecular evidence of life in one of the most biologically sparse environments on Earth.

Individuals regularly struggle to save for retirement. Using a large-scale field experiment ( N = 97 , 149 ) in Mexico, we test the effectiveness of several behavioral interventions relative to existing policy and each other geared toward improving voluntary retirement savings contributions. We find that an intervention framing savings as a way to secure one's family future significantly improves contribution rates. We leverage recursive partitioning techniques and identify that the overall positive treatment effect masks subpopulations where the treatment is even more effective and other groups where the treatment has a significant negative effect, decreasing contribution rates. Accounting for this variation is significant for theoretical and policy development as well as firm profitability. Our work also provides a methodological framework for how to better design, scale, and deploy behavioral interventions to maximize their effectiveness.

In a transdisciplinary project with the Municipality of Trelew (Argentina), we assessed barriers to households disposing of separated waste, developed supportive behavioral interventions, tested the interventions in a randomized controlled trial, and supported the Municipality in upscaling the most successful and cost-effective intervention to a total of 20,000 households. The interventions were designed to address the three main barriers to waste separation detected through a baseline study: a lack of knowledge on how separation works; the additional hassle it represents; and the self-regulation challenge it poses. The interventions consisted of envelopes containing simplifying information, empathetic messages, a magnetic calendar acting as a reminder, or a combination thereof. The interventions roughly halved the prevalence of bags containing unusable mixed waste two weeks after the intervention. This impact was still present after six months. We did not find evidence for an additional effect of empathetic messages or the reminder. Based on these results, the simplified information intervention was rolled out. The results provide evidence of the high potential of using the full range of behavioral methods to increase sustainable behaviors, particularly in the context of limited options to adapt the waste management system as such.

Within-group competition over food resources can be a major cost of social living. In the wild, foragers are confronted with social (e.g. hierarchical rank) and ecological (e.g. food availability and distribution) challenges that affect their foraging decisions and feeding success. Exhibiting prosocial behaviours, such as tolerance at feeding sites, can benefit group members by developing affiliative social relationships, enhancing access to resources and maximizing fitness. We examined social tolerance at feeding sites in Callithrix jacchus, a cooperatively breeding primate species. We investigated the set of social (rank, age and sex) and ecological (food availability) factors that influence the structure and dynamics of within-group foraging association networks. We designed and conducted an experimental field study of four wild groups of common marmosets in which we controlled food distribution (concentrated or scattered) and productivity (high, medium or low food rewards). Then, we used social network analyses to assess the number and strength of foraging associations among group members, their effects on individual food consumption, and whether recent experiences with conspecifics during foraging affected subsequent associations. Overall, common marmoset foraging association networks were cohesive, as group members jointly occupied feeding sites. The number and strength of associations varied depending on the ecological context. Associations were stronger during conditions in which food was concentrated at a single site. Individuals obtained greater access to food resources when sharing a feeding site with conspecifics, but once a food item was obtained, the forager moved to a nearby tree and consumed it away from others. Additionally, the strength of previous foraging associations and subsequent levels of social tolerance at feeding sites were positively related, a relationship compatible with the ability of memorizing associations over time and recalling the information in future decision-making. In sum, marmosets adjusted their partner choices and the strength of foraging associations in response to food availability. They exhibited increased social tolerance at feeding sites during conditions in which opportunities for contest competition were expected to be greatest. These cooperative breeding primates appear to mutually benefit by maintaining cohesive and strong affiliative relationships, and by increasing opportunities for coordinated behaviour and offspring survival.

Na natureza, os forrageadores são confrontados com desafios sociais (e.g. posição hierárquica) e ecológicos (e.g. disponibilidade e distribuição de alimentos) que afetam suas decisões de forrageio e seu sucesso alimentar. Exibir comportamentos pró-sociais, como tolerância em sítios de alimentação, pode beneficiar os membros do grupo, desenvolvendo relações sociais afiliativas, melhorando o acesso aos recursos e maximizando sua aptidão evolutiva. Examinamos a tolerância social de um primata com reprodução cooperativa (Callithrix jacchus) em sítios de alimentação. Investigamos a influência de um conjunto de fatores sociais (hierarquia, idade, sexo) e ecológicos (disponibilidade de alimento) na estrutura e dinâmica das redes de associação de forrageio dentro do grupo social. Planejamos e conduzimos um experimento de campo com quatro grupos de saguis-comuns de vida livre, no qual controlamos a distribuição (concentrada e dispersa) e a produtividade de alimento (altas, médias ou baixas recompensas). Usamos análise de redes sociais para avaliar o número e a força das associações de forrageio entre os membros do grupo, seu efeito no consumo individual de alimento, e se experiências recentes de forrageio entre coespecíficos afetam associações subsequentes. Em geral, as redes de associação de forrageio dos saguis foram coesas e os membros de cada grupo ocuparam sítios de alimentação em conjunto. O número e a força das associações variaram dependendo do contexto ecológico. As associações foram mais fortes durante as condições em que o alimento se encontrava concentrado em um sítio. Os indivíduos obtiveram maior acesso aos recursos quando compartilharam o sítio de alimentação com coespecíficos, e uma vez que o item alimentar era obtido, o forrageador o consumia em uma árvore próxima, longe dos outros. Além disso, a força das associações recentes e os níveis subsequentes de tolerância social em sítios de alimentação foram positivamente relacionados, compatível com a capacidade de memorizar associações ao longo do tempo e relembrá-las em tomadas de decisão futuras. Em conclusão, os saguis ajustaram suas escolhas de parceiros e a força das associações de forrageio em resposta à disponibilidade de alimento. Eles exibiram uma maior tolerância social em sítios de alimentação durante as condições em que se esperava que as oportunidades de competição direta fossem maiores. Estes primatas com reprodução cooperativa parecem se beneficiar mutuamente ao manterem relações afiliativas coesas e fortes, as quais aumentam as oportunidades para comportamentos coordenados e a sobrevivência da prole.

Governance regimes that assign exclusive access to support collective action are increasingly promoted to manage common-pool resources under the premise that they foster environmental stewardship. However, experimental evidence linked to existing policies that support this premise is lacking. Overlapping access policies in small-scale fisheries provide a unique opportunity to test the effects of access regimes on users' stewardship behaviors. We performed a lab-in-the-field experiment to assess how fishers' previous experience with access regimes relates to compliance and peer enforcement (n = 120). Fishers' compliance and peer-enforcement decisions were compared in a common-pool-resource game. Treatments differed in framing to represent exclusive access and pseudo-open access regimes, both of which fishers face in real life. To contrast behavior in the game with real-life observations, we compared fishers' associations that have shown relatively high and low management performance under exclusive access policies. Compliance and peer enforcement were higher under the exclusive access treatment than under the pseudo-open access treatment only for fishers' associations with high management performance in real life. Behaviors in the game reflected differences between associations in real life. Our results support previous research on ocean governance by experimentally assessing the role of access regimes in determining users' stewardship and suggest potential mechanisms for stewardship internalization.


Efectos de la experiencia con regímenes de acceso sobre comportamientos de gestión responsable de pescadores a pequeña escala Resumen Las políticas que asignan acceso exclusivo a grupos de usuarios para apoyar la acción colectiva son cada vez más promovidas para el manejo de recursos de uso comunitario bajo la premisa de que fomentan la gestión ambiental responsable. Sin embargo, la evidencia experimental vinculada a políticas existentes que respalde esta premisa es insuficiente. La superposición de diversas políticas de acceso en las pesquerías a pequeña escala proporciona una oportunidad única para analizar los efectos de los regímenes de acceso sobre el comportamiento de gestión de los usuarios. Realizamos un experimento, llevando el laboratorio al campo, para evaluar cómo la experiencia previa de los pescadores con regímenes de acceso se relaciona con sus comporatamientos de cumplimiento y de sanción de pares (n = 120). Comparamos el cumplimiento con cutoas de extracción de los pescadores y sus decisiones de sancionar a pares que incumplian las cuotas en un juego de recursos de uso comunitario entre dos tratamientos. Los tratamientos variaban en la contextualización del juego para representar una pesquería de acceso exclusivo y una de pseudo libre acceso, a las que se enfrentan los pescadores en la vida real. Para contrastar el comportamiento en el juego con las observaciones de la vida real, comparamos los resultados de asociaciones de pescadores que han mostrado un desempeño de manejo relativamente alto y bajo con las políticas de acceso exclusivo. El cumplimiento y la sanción de pares fueron mayores bajo el tratamiento de acceso exclusivo que bajo el de pseudo libre acceso sólo para aquellas asociaciones de pescadores con un alto desempeño de manejo en la vida real. Los comportamientos en el juego reflejaron las diferencias entre las asociaciones en la vida real. Nuestros resultados respaldan investigaciones previas sobre la governanza de recursos marinos mediante la evaluación experimental del papel que tienen las políticas de acceso en la determinación de la gestión del usuario y sugieren mecanismos potenciales para la internalización de dicha gestión.

Hg-Cd-Te (MCT) cameras can be used to analyze the thermal emission or the infrared reflective response of physical systems. However, measurements performed with this instrument need to be corrected for the thermal emission from the environment surrounding the camera. In this work we analyzed this effect under conditions typically met in field applications, when environmental temperature variations are common. The dark current signal on a Xeva MCT 320 CL TE4 camera was studied as a function of ambient temperature and the integration time used for image acquisition. The MCT sensor at the focal plane was kept at a constant nominal temperature of 210 K by a thermoelectric cooler unit throughout the experiment. Integration times for data acquisition varied between 2.0 to 12.0 ms. The camera body temperature was monitored within ±0.2°C, ranging from about 17.0°C to 27.0°C. The camera unit was allowed to reach thermal stabilization in a controlled-temperature lab before each measurement session. Both the integration time, and temperature range intervals were chosen to represent typical field deployment conditions. The average dark current signal showed a clear linear dependence with integration time, for a constant environmental temperature setting. The slope of this linear relation increased with the ambient temperature, whereas the intercept was insensitive to temperature changes. The standard deviation of the dark current signal was a function of integration time, but independent of the ambient temperature setting. These results allowed modeling the dark current signal as a function of the integration time and the camera body temperature. To minimize the dark current for a given integration time setting, measurements should be performed under the coldest possible conditions, in opposition to manufacturer recommendations. As a direct consequence of these results, the useful dynamic range for science applications with this MCT camera is reduced with increasing integration times and ambient temperatures. For instance, when acquiring images with 5 ms integration time, at 22°C ambient temperature, the resulting dark current signal reduces the maximum useful dynamic range in about 20%. The results shown here can be promptly adapted to other applications with MCT cameras, especially in situations with a non-controlled thermal environment, or when analyzing the reflective properties of cold targets.

BACKGROUND: Consumers should show strong spatial preferences when foraging in environments where food availability is highly heterogeneous and predictable. Postdispersal granivores face this scenario in most arid areas, where soil seed bank abundance and composition associates persistently with vegetation structure at small scales (decimetres to metres). Those environmental features should be exploited as useful pre-harvest information, at least to avoid patches predicted to be poor. However, we did not find the expected spatial association in the algarrobal of the central Monte desert by observing foraging seed-eating birds, a field technique influenced by how much they exploit visited patches. In this work we tested if the first stage of foraging by granivorous birds (patch visit, encounter or exploration) is positively associated with environmental indicators of patch quality by recording the removal of single seeds from 300 scattered experimental devices during seasonal trials. Spatial selectivity was analysed by comparing the structural characteristics of used vs. available microhabitats, and evaluated against bottom-up and top-down hypotheses based on our previous knowledge on local seed bank abundance, composition and dynamics. Their foraging activity was also explored for spatial autocorrelation and environmental correlates at bigger scales. RESULTS: Postdispersal granivorous birds were less selective in their use of foraging space than expected if microhabitat appearance were providing them relevant information to guide their search for profitable foraging patches. No microhabitat type, as defined by their vegetation structure and soil cover, remained safe from bird exploration. Analyses at bigger temporal and spatial scales proved more important to describe heterogeneity in seed removal. CONCLUSIONS: Closeness to tall trees, probably related to bird territoriality and reproduction or to their perception of predation risk, seemed to determine a first level of habitat selection, constraining explorable space. Then, microhabitat openness (rather than seed abundance) exerted some positive influence on which patches were more frequently visited among those accessible. Selective patterns by birds at small scales were closer to our predictions of a top-down spatial effect, with seed consumption creating or strengthening (and not responding to) the spatial pattern and dynamics of the seed bank.

Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are vectors of diseases that constitute public health problems. The discovery of products capable of inhibiting their development which are less harmful to the environment would have a huge impact on vector control. Here, natural cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), technical CNSL, anacardic acid, cardanol, and cardol were isolated from Anacardium occidentale and evaluated for larvicidal and pupicidal activity against Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus under laboratory and field conditions. The activities of phenol, resorcinol, salicylic acid, and pentadecane, commercial chemicals similar in structure to nut shell derivatives, were also evaluated. All of the fractions extracted from A. occidentale oil exerted larvicidal effects against both mosquito species (LC50 5.4-22.6 mg/L), and two of the aforementioned were effective against pupae (LC50 90.8-109.7 mg/L). Of all the fractions tested, cardol demonstrated the strongest larvicidal and pupicidal effects and presented the most prolonged residual activity against the larvae and pupae of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus under field conditions. This study suggests that A. occidentale nut shell derivatives are sustainable and promising candidates for the development of novel insecticides to overcome the problem of harmful chemical insecticides.

Alternative Splicing (AS) is a mechanism that generates different mature transcripts from precursor mRNAs (pre-mRNAs) of the same gene. In plants, a wide range of physiological and metabolic events are related to AS, as well as fast responses to changes in temperature. AS is present in around 60% of intron-containing genes in Arabidopsis, 46% in rice, and 38% in maize and it is widespread among the circadian clock genes. Little is known about how AS influences the circadian clock of C4 plants, like commercial sugarcane, a C4 crop with a complex hybrid genome. This work aims to test if the daily dynamics of AS forms of circadian clock genes are regulated by environmental factors, such as temperature, in the field. A systematic search for AS in five sugarcane clock genes, ScLHY, ScPRR37, ScPRR73, ScPRR95, and ScTOC1 using different organs of sugarcane sampled during winter, with 4 months old plants, and during summer, with 9 months old plants, revealed temperature- and organ-dependent expression of at least one alternatively spliced isoform in all genes. Expression of AS isoforms varied according to the season. Our results suggest that AS events in circadian clock genes are correlated with temperature.

Are short-term responses by tropical rainforest to drought (e.g. during El Niño) sufficient to predict changes over the long-term, or from repeated drought? Using the world's only long-term (16-year) drought experiment in tropical forest we examine predictability from short-term measurements (1-2 years). Transpiration was maximized in droughted forest: it consumed all available throughfall throughout the 16 years of study. Leaf photosynthetic capacity [Formula: see text] was maintained, but only when averaged across tree size groups. Annual transpiration in droughted forest was less than in control, with initial reductions (at high biomass) imposed by foliar stomatal control. Tree mortality increased after year three, leading to an overall biomass loss of 40%; over the long-term, the main constraint on transpiration was thus imposed by the associated reduction in sapwood area. Altered tree mortality risk may prove predictable from soil and plant hydraulics, but additional monitoring is needed to test whether future biomass will stabilize or collapse. Allocation of assimilate differed over time: stem growth and reproductive output declined in the short-term, but following mortality-related changes in resource availability, both showed long-term resilience, with partial or full recovery. Understanding and simulation of these phenomena and related trade-offs in allocation will advance more effectively through greater use of optimization and probabilistic modelling approaches.This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'The impact of the 2015/2016 El Niño on the terrestrial tropical carbon cycle: patterns, mechanisms and implications'.

Abstract Clove oil is used as a fish anesthetic because it is a natural and inexpensive product with low toxicity risks. The goal of the present study was to determine the appropriate concentration of clove oil for small-sized tropical fish to be used in mark-recapture studies or when individuals are to be sacrificed. We applied three different clove oil concentrations (D1=0.05 mL, D2=0.10 mL and D3=0.20 mL per 500 mL of water) on three small-sized fish species. We found a negative relationship between induction time and treatment for two species (Hyphessobrycon sp.1 and Hemigrammus sp.), while concentration was unrelated to recovery time. Fish body length was positively related to induction time in the D2 treatment for Hemigrammus sp., and negatively for Hyphessobrycon sp.1 in the D1 treatment, but was unrelated to recovery time for three species and treatments. Resumo O óleo de cravo é recomendado como anestésico para peixes por ser produto de origem natural, baixo custo e apresentar poucos riscos de intoxicação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar concentrações adequadas de óleo de cravo para anestesiar ou eutanasiar peixes de pequeno porte em ambiente natural. Foram testadas três concentrações do anestésico (D1=0,05 mL, D2=0,10 mL e D3=0,20 mL) em três espécies de peixes de pequeno. Houve uma relação negativa entre o tempo para a sedação dos indivíduos e a concentração para duas espécies (Hyphessobrycon sp.1 e Hemigrammus sp.), porém não foi encontrada relação entre o tempo para recuperação e as concentrações. We have experimentally investigated the effects of repeated diesel spills on the bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana, the gastropod Neritina virginea and the polychaete Laeonereis culveri, by monitoring the responses of oxidative stress biomarkers in a subtropical estuary. Three frequencies of exposure events were compared against two dosages of oil in a factorial experiment with asymmetrical controls. Hypotheses were tested to distinguish between (i) the overall effect of oil spills, (ii) the effect of diesel dosage via different exposure regimes, and (iii) the effect of time since last spill. Antioxidant defense responses and oxidative damage in the bivalve A. brasiliana and the polychaete L. culveri were overall significantly affected by frequent oil spills compared to undisturbed controls. The main effects of diesel spills on both species were the induction of SOD and GST activities, a significant increase in LPO levels and a decrease in GSH concentration. N. virginea was particularly tolerant to oil exposure, with the exception of a significant GSH depletion. Overall, enzymatic activities and oxidative damage in A. brasiliana and L. culveri were induced by frequent low-dosage spills compared to infrequent high-dosage spills, although the opposite pattern was observed for N. virginea antioxidant responses. Antioxidant responses in A. brasiliana and L. culveri were not affected by timing of exposure events. However, our results revealed that N. virginea might have a delayed response to acute high-dosage exposure. Experimental in situ simulations of oil exposure events with varying frequencies and intensities provide a useful tool for detecting and quantifying environmental impacts. In general, antioxidant biomarkers were induced by frequent low-dosage exposures compared to infrequent high-dosage ones. The bivalve A. brasiliana and the polychaete L. culveri are more suitable sentinels due to their greater responsiveness to oil and also to their wider geographical distribution.

This study investigates the impact of repeated diesel spills on the structure of intertidal macrofaunal assemblages of a subtropical estuary. Three frequencies of exposure events were compared against two dosages of oil in a factorial experiment with asymmetrical controls. Hypotheses were tested to distinguish between (i) the overall effect of oil spills, (ii) the effect of diesel dosage via different exposure regimes, and (iii) the effect of time since last spill. Repeated oil spills dramatically altered the overall structure of assemblages and reduced the total density of macrofauna and densities of dominant taxa. Increasing the frequency of oil spills negatively affected macrofauna. In general, frequent low-dosage oil spills were more deleterious than infrequent high-dosage ones. However, increases in densities of some taxa, mainly the gastropod Heleobia australis, were observed in response to infrequent spills. Our results highlight the importance of repeated exposure events in determining the extent of oil impacts.

Many families fail to vaccinate their children despite the supply of these services at no cost. This study tests whether personal reminders can increase demand for vaccination. A field experiment was conducted in rural Guatemala in which timely reminders were provided to families whose children were due for a vaccine. The six-month intervention increased the probability of vaccination completion by 2.2 percentage points among all children in treatment communities. Moreover, for children in treatment communities who were due to receive a vaccine, and whose parents were expected to be reminded about that due date, the probability of vaccination completion increased by 4.6 percentage points. The cost of an additional child with complete vaccination due to the intervention is estimated at about $7.50.

The rise of childhood obesity in less developed countries is often overlooked. We study the impact of body weight report cards in Mexico. The report cards increased parental knowledge and shifted parental attitudes about children's weight. We observe no meaningful changes in parental behaviors or children's body mass index. Interestingly, parents of children in the most obese classrooms were less likely to report that their obese child weighed too much relative to those in the least obese classrooms. As obesity rates increase, reference points for appropriate body weights may rise, making it more difficult to lower obesity rates.

We evaluated the effects of diesel oil on the bivalve Mytella guyanensis using biomarkers of oxidative stress (glutathione S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced glutathione) after an experimental in situ spill in a mangrove area in southern Brazil. A linear model was developed for the Multiple Before-After Control-Impact (MBACI) experimental design to assess the significance of biological responses. Control and impacted sites were sampled seven and two days before as well as two and seven days after the spill. With the exception of a late response of reduced glutathione (GSH) levels on day seven, none of the biomarkers were significantly altered by the impact. This result was attributed to the high environmental variability of the experimental sites combined with a low sensitivity of Mytella guyanensis to diesel oil at short time-scales. The high resistance of M. guyanensis suggests that its antioxidant response is triggered only after a medium- to long-term exposure to contaminants.

A field experiment to assess the effects of continuous nutrient addition on the macrobenthic community was carried out on an estuarine mudflat on the northeast coast of Brazil. The experiment began on 5 October 2005 and ended on 8 February 2006. Macrofauna was compared at approximately four-week intervals in triplicate plots with three levels (Control - C, Low Dose - LD and High Dose - HD) of weekly fertilizer additions for 17 weeks. Inorganic fertilizer (N-P-K) was applied on nine randomly defined quadrangular plots (4m(2) each). All measurements were calculated from species abundances. Multivariate analyses as well as the univariate indices (richness, abundance and Shannon-Wiener index) showed statistically significant differences between the enriched and control areas during the period of the experiment. The expected gradual response based on the succession model of Pearson and Rosenberg was not observed. The nutrient doses used were high enough to cause severe decreases in abundance, richness and evenness, and an increase in dominance.
