RESUMO

Species of the catfish genus Rineloricaria are common in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, in southeastern Brazil; here we present a revision of the taxonomic diversity and geographic distribution of the species of the genus inhabiting the basin, based on novel morphologic and molecular data. Five species delimitation methods based on cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 nucleotide sequences yielded comparable molecular operational taxonomic units. The automatic barcode gap discovery, assemble species by automatic partitioning, barcode index number, and Bayesian implementation of the Poisson tree process methods supported the recognition of five evolutionary lineages. These taxonomic units were assigned to the previously described Rineloricaria nigricauda, Rineloricaria steindachneri, Rineloricaria zawadzkii, and Rineloricaria nudipectoris, and an additional undescribed species. R. zawadzkii was further divided into two intraspecific geographically structured lineages using the generalized mixed Yule coalescent delimitation method. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis revealed that the five lineages from the Paraíba do Sul have closer relationships to different species from southern and southeastern Brazil (Ribeira de Iguape, Lagoa dos Patos, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Parana river basins) than to each other. Based on the analysis of lectotypes, recently collected material, and specimens from ichthyological collections, the poorly described R. nigricauda and R. steindachneri are redescribed following current descriptive standards. The undescribed species from the middle and upper Paraíba do Sul River basin is formally described. The description of a new species, along with the description of species boundaries in R. nigricauda and R. steindachneri, contributes to the knowledge of the ichthyofauna of the Paraíba do Sul River basin and adjacent coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. An identification key for the species of Rineloricaria occurring in the Paraíba do Sul River basin is provided.

A new virus known as snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) was discovered in South India in striped snakehead (Channa striata) that had hemorrhagic patches and cutaneous ulcerations. The virus is the most potentially harmful pathogen of snakehead because it could cause 100% mortality within 5 days. The goal of the current investigation was to evaluate the infectivity of rhabdovirus in freshwater fishes and to analyze the immune response in snakehead fish after challenge with SHRV-In. The infectivity study of SHRV-In against three freshwater fish such as tilapia, grass carp and loach showed that the virus could not induce mortality in any of them. Snakehead fish challenged with SHRV-In showed significant (p < 0.05) changes in haematological parameters such as red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), haematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), white blood cell (WBC), total platelet (PLT) counts, mean platelet volume (MPV) and immunological markers such as respiratory burst, superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and myeloperoxidase activity at 6, 12, 24 and 48 hpi. Real time PCR was executed to examine the expression profile of innate immune genes such as IRF-7, IL-8 and IL-12 in Snakehead fish at 6, 12, 24 and 48 h post SHRV-In infection. Immune gene expression of IRF-7, IL-8 and IL-12 were up-regulated in the spleen when compared to kidney at 6 and 12 hpi. However, the expression level of all the genes was down-regulated at 24 and 48 hpi. The down regulation of innate immune genes after 24 hpi in these tissues may be the result of increased multiplication of SHRV-In by interfering with the immune signaling pathway.

Improperly cooked fish, carrying active metacercariae (MCs), can pose a significant risk for transmitting fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZTs) to human consumers. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of FBZTs by conducting a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis involving various fish species, such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and red-belly tilapia (Tilapia zillii). These fish specimens were collected from distinct Egyptian governorates, specifically Giza, Kafr al-Shaykh, and Fayoum. The recovered flukes from experimentally infected domestic pigeons were identified as Prohemistomum vivax, Haplorchis pumilio, and Pygidiopsis genata based on morphological features. Furthermore, the identity of the retrieved adult flukes was confirmed using three species-specific primers for PCR amplification and sequencing analysis of the ITS rDNA region and have been deposited in GenBank with the following accession numbers: P. vivax (OR291421.1 and OR291422.1), P. genata (OP099561.1), and H. pumilio (OM439581.1-OP090510.1). Quantitative real-time PCR targeting the immunological genes Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Interleukin-1 (IL-1Β) was employed to compare the cellular immune response between infected with EMCs and uninfected O. niloticus. The results indicated a significant increase in TNF- and IL-1Β levels in FBZTs-infected vs un-infected fishes. Importantly, the presence of adult flukes and EMCs led to substantial histological alterations in both experimentally infected pigeons and naturally infected fish tissues. These changes included the necrosis of fish muscle bundles and a pronounced inflammatory reaction with muscular necrosis in the digestive tracts of experimentally infected pigeons.

The present study was conducted to study the composition of gut microbiome in the advanced fingerling and fingerling stage of striped pangasius catfish and catla during healthy and diseased conditions. Healthy pangasius and catla fishes were obtained from commercial farms and injected with the LD50 dose of A. hydrophila. The intestinal samples from the control and injected group were collected and pooled for 16 s metagenomic analysis. Community analysis was performed by targeting the 16 s rRNA gene to explore and compare the gut microbiota composition of these fishes. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) consisted of four major phyla: Bacteroidia, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. Alpha and beta diversity indices were carried out to understand the diversity of microbes within and between a sample. While comparing the advanced fingerling and fingerling stage gut microbiome of Pangasius catfish, the dominance of Proteobacteria was found in fingerlings, whereas Firmicutes and Bacteroides were found in advanced fingerlings. In catla, Proteobacteria and Bacteroides were predominant. Taxonomic abundance of the microbiota in control and diseased Pangasius and catla fishes at phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species levels were also depicted. The present study is the first of its kind, and it will help to identify the diversity of novel potential bacterial species involved in disease protection of fishes. It can lead to the development of sustainable prophylactic measures against (re-)emerging bacterial diseases in aquaculture.

Several studies have reported that animals' personalities are often correlated with individual differences in cognition. Here, we tested whether personality is related to cognition across species, focusing on 10 freshwater fishes and a task relevant for fitness, the ability to discriminate shoal size. Bolder species exhibited more 'shuttle' behavior for information sampling during shoal selection and showed high performance (HP) in the numerical discrimination than shyer species, i.e., low performance (LP) species. Species at both the high and low ends of sociability showed LP, possibly due to loosened selection pressure because of either no need to perform shoal size discrimination tasks frequently in nature for very high sociability species or decreased willingness and motivation to join and stay within shoals for very low sociability species. Notably, the numerical discrimination was sensitive to the numerical contrast ratio in LP species but not in HP species, suggesting that the numerical system used for size discrimination also varied between species. Overall, we demonstrated the interspecies relationship between personality and shoal size discrimination across fish species, suggesting an evolutionary link between numerical abilities and behavior.

China harbors a high species diversity of freshwater fishes not shared with any of its neighboring nations. Freshwater fish diversity in the country has been under severe threat from human activities over the past decades, thus conservation freshwater fishes and ecosystems is urgently needed. To accumulate baseline data for guiding protection actions, the third red list assessment of Chinese freshwater fishes was carried out. Among Chinese freshwater fishes assessed, there are 355 at-risk species (22.3% of the total), including 69 ranked as Critically Endangered, 97 as Endangered, and 189 as Vulnerable. Two species are classified as Extinct and one as Regionally Extinct. China's threat level seems to be lower than the known average level found in the IUCN's global assessment of freshwater fishes, but this is an artifact of a high rate of species classified as Data Deficient. Conservation of freshwater fishes is presently facing a grim situation in China. Imperilment of Chinese freshwater fishes is primarily attributed to habitat loss and degradation arising from human perturbations, particularly river damming. Despite the adoption of protected areas setting up, captive breeding and release, and a fishing moratorium, conservation efforts for freshwater fishes are compromised by disproportional attention in China's biodiversity conservation, baseline data deficiency, insufficiently designed protection networks, and inefficient or inadequate implementation of conservation strategies. To achieve the objectives of Chinese freshwater fish conservation, it is proposed to conduct a national-scale survey of fish diversity and reassess their at-risk status, develop systematic conservation planning of freshwater fish diversity and ecosystems, prioritize strategies for protected areas development, perform genetic-based captive breeding for releasing in concert with other protection actions, and implement flexible fishing moratorium strategies in different water bodies.

A taxonomic revision of Sturisoma is presented. Individuals including both type and non-type specimens of all valid species were examined. Sturisoma was found to comprise 10 valid species: Sturisoma barbatum, Sturisoma brevirostre, Sturisoma graffini, Sturisoma guentheri, Sturisoma lyra, Sturisoma monopelte, Sturisoma nigrirostrum, Sturisoma reisi, Sturisoma rostratum, and Sturisoma tenuirostre. Furthermore, four new species are described: Sturisoma ghazziae, new species, from the Araguaia River, belonging to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, Central Brazil; Sturisoma careirensia, new species, from the middle Amazon basin, Brazil; Sturisoma rapppydanielae, new species, from the Purus River, Amazon basin, Brazil; and Sturisoma defranciscoi, new species, from the Putumayo and Solimões rivers, upper Amazon basin, Colombia, and Brazil. Sturisoma robustum is confirmed as synonym of S. barbatum, species registered along the Paraguay/Parana/La Plata River basin in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. New records were found for S. nigrirostrum as present in the upper Amazon basin, in the Yavari River, Brazil, in addition to its already known locality, the Ucayali River, Peru. The distribution of the type species of the genus S. rostratum is limited to the lower portion of the Amazon basin in the Araguaia, Maranhão, Mearim, Tapajós, and Tocantins rivers and its affluents, Brazil, in contrast to the assumed widespread distribution across the main basins of South America, as previously proposed for the species; the Mearim River is a new record for the species. Updated diagnoses and descriptions are offered for species of Sturisoma, in addition to distribution maps and an identification key for the species.

In three water-supply reservoirs in the catchment area of the Odra River (Czech Republic), a special fish stock was monitored for control of health to estimate the mutagenic effect of chemicals. The results contribute to obtaining initial information about the morphology of erythrocyte abnormalities classified in 21 categories in 16 fish species in reservoirs with abundant salmonids (the Morávka Reservoir) or with the prevalence of cyprinids (the Kruzberk and Sance Reservoirs), not directly exposed to the adverse environmental effects such as industrial, urban, agricultural and intensive farming activities. The different intensities and prevalence of nuclear abnormalities (NA) and cytoplasmic abnormalities (CA) in fish from the same reservoir habitat show that to be able to obtain an objective view of the genotoxic risk of chemicals, it is necessary to respect the different requirements of the fish for the exploitation of the food available in the biotope and to subject all representatives of piscivorous, omnivorous and benthophagous fishes in the reservoir to cytogenetic analysis. The occurrence of certain categories of erythrocyte abnormalities in diseased fish draws attention to the need to know the state of health of the fish and to employ this knowledge to exclude parasitological, viral and other infectious agents. These results are the first report of the frequencies of erythrocyte abnormalities in native fish. They should serve to check which of the categories examined could be of use in assessing the genotoxic risk in other stagnant and running aquatic ecosystems affected by anthropogenic activities.

Otocinclus cocama, a uniquely colored species of the loricariid catfish genus Otocinclus described solely from the type locality in the lower Ucayali River in northern Peru, is reported occurring in the Tigre River, a tributary to the Marañón River that drains a different section of the Andean Mountain range in the western Amazon. Both populations differ in the number of dark bars spanning the flanks of the body, and we investigated whether these morphotypes constitute distinct species. The body shapes of populations from the Tigre and Ucayali rivers were compared using geometric morphometrics. Although principal component analysis detected a broad overlap between populations, multivariate analysis of variance and linear driscriminat analysis revealed a subtle differentiation between the populations of the two hydrographic basins. Average body shape of the Ucayali River population tend to be slightly higher than that of the Tigre River, with the caudal peduncle stretched vertically in the Ucayali population. Multivariate regression of shape and centroid size revealed an allometric effect of 10.7% (p < 0.001), suggesting that the variation between Tigre and Ucayali populations was purely shape variation. Molecular data of coI, cytb, nd2, and 16S mitochondrial genes indicated a nucleotide diversity range from 0.001 to 0.003, and haplotypic diversity range from 0.600 ± 0.11 to 0.79 ± 0.07. The median-joining haplotype network for the concatenated matrix exhibited two divergent haplogroups related to the geographic area and separated by <10 mutational steps. The molecular species delimitation methods based on distance (automatic barcode gap discovery and assemble species by automatic partitioning) recovered two molecular lineages evolving independently, being one of the lineages formed by individuals from both populations. Tree-based methods (generalized mixed Yule coalescent and Bayesian implementation of the Poisson tree process) recovered similar topologies and supported single lineage recognition. Methods of molecular delimitation of species disclosed the high similarity between the two populations of Otocinclus cocama, further supported by the presence of old haplotypes common to both groups which could indicate that the populations still maintain gene flow. Although the morphological data reveal a subtle variation between both river basins, the molecular data suggest a weak population structuration based on hydrographic areas, but not different species lineages, therefore Otocinclus cocama is composed of a single lineage with two distinct morphotypes.

Lower Central America (LCA) has a complex biogeographic history shaped by the rise of the Isthmus of Panama and the global climatic oscillations of the Pleistocene. These events have been crucial in structuring biodiversity in LCA, but their consequences for the distribution and partitions of genetic diversity across the region remain to be elucidated. We combined complete mitochondrial genomes and nuclear ultraconserved elements (UCEs) to study the phylogeographic history and population genetic structure of the electric fish Brachyhypopomus occidentalis in LCA. Our results are consistent with the known phylogeographic history of B. occidentalis in LCA, but we update this history in several important ways that help illuminate the phylogeographic history of freshwater fishes in the region. We provide: i) support for three waves of colonization, two of which occurred prior to the final closure of the Panama Isthmus; ii) a more precise understanding of each colonization event, with evidence for a larger footprint of the first event, as well as genetic exchange across the continental divide in subsequent events; and iii) evidence for high levels of previously unrecognized population genetic structure across LCA. This updated model of colonization and diversification of B. occidentalis consists of three waves of dispersal and colonization, which triggered the evolution of geographic breaks in both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes across LCA. These processes are tightly linked to the dynamic uplift of the Isthmus, recent volcanic activity in the region, and the sea-level oscillations of the Pleistocene. These results improve previous phylogeographic inferences regarding the distribution and diversification of freshwater fishes in LCA, and generate testable hypotheses to guide future research exploring the factors shaping biodiversity in the region.

This study aims to elucidate the evolution of catfish research publications over recent decades, identify emerging research clusters, examine keyword patterns, determine major contributors (including authors, organizations, and funding agencies), and analyze their collaborative networks and citation bursts on a global scale. The USA, Brazil, China, and India collectively contribute approximately 67% of the total catfish research publications, with a marked increase in prevalence since 2016. The most frequently occurring and dominant keywords are "channel catfish" and "responses," respectively. Intriguingly, our findings reveal 28 distinct article clusters, with prominent clusters including "yellow catfish," "channel catfish", "pectoral girdle," "African catfish", "Rio Sao Francisco basin," "Edwardsiella ictaluri," and "temperature mediated". Concurrently, keyword clustering generates seven main clusters: "new species", "growth performance", "heavy metal", "gonadotropin-releasing", "essential oil", and "olfactory receptor". This study further anticipates future research directions, offering fresh perspectives on the catfish literature landscape. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article to conduct a comprehensive mapping review of catfish research publications worldwide.

The current conservation status of Percichthys trucha (Creole perch) is Least Concern, although the population trend is considered to be decreasing. We conducted an extensive survey of parasite fauna in this species over two decades in its distribution range in Argentina. Fish were collected using gill and trawl nets. Parasites were collected, identified, and counted to calculate prevalence and mean intensity. The present work reports the parasite species infecting P. trucha, using data from our own survey and from previously published records. This information enables us to evaluate infection and distribution patterns, assess the role of P. trucha as host, determine the specificity of the parasites, and evaluate the threat represented by introduced, invasive parasites. The data set consists of a total of 453 host-parasite-locality records, of which only 15 are exclusively bibliographic. We found 44 parasite taxa: 19 digeneans, 4 monogeneans, 5 cestodes, 8 nematodes, 4 acanthocephalans, 3 crustaceans, and 1 mollusk. The most represented families were Diplostomidae, Heterophyidae, and Dactylogyridae. This study increases the number of parasite species known from 25 to 44. It can be concluded that this parasite fauna is characterized by high diversity, particularly of digeneans, and most of the parasites reproduce within this host, a pattern which is related to the top position of this fish species in the trophic webs. Six parasite species (Allocreadium patagonicum, Homalometron papilliferum, Acanthostomoides apophalliformis, Duplaccessorius andinus, Pseudodelphys limnicola, and Hysterothylacium patagonense) exhibit high host specificity (only matures in Creole perches) and are widely distributed, which could now be considered as "biogeographical core helminth fauna." Some P. trucha populations are affected by the invasion of alien fishes like Cyprinus carpio and pathogenic parasites like Lernaea cyprinacea and Schizocotyle acheilognathi. Our findings emphasize the need for further research.

During a research on morphological diversity of gill ectoparasites on native and non-native fishes from tributaries (Palizada, El Recreo and Lacantún rivers) of the Usumacinta River Basin in the states of Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas (southern Mexico), the following monogenoids were found: Icelanonchohaptor tropicalis n. sp. on Usumacinta buffalo Ictiobus meridionalis (Günther, 1868) (Catostomidae); Heteropriapulus simplexiodes n. sp. and Heteropriapulus heterotylioides n. sp. on catfishes Pterygoplichthys pardalis (Castelnau, 1855) (Loricariidae) (type host) and Pterygoplichthys disyunctivus (Weber, 1991); Ligictaluridus mirabilis (Mueller 1937; Klassen and Beverley-Burton1985 from the southern blue catfish Ictalurus meridionalis (Günther, 1864) (Ictaluridae); Aristocleidus mexicanus Mendoza-Franco and Vidal-Martínez, 2001 on Eugerres mexicanus (Steindachner, 1863) (Gerreidae) (all monogenoidean species in the Dactylogyridae); and Diplectanocotyla megalopis Rakotofiringa and Oliver1987 (Diplectanidae) on tarpon Megalops atlanticus Valenciennes, 1847 (Megalopidae). The new species of Icelanonchohaptor and Heteropriapulus are herein described for the first time from a native catostomid and non-native Pterygoplichthys spp., respectively. While I. tropicalis n. sp. and L. mirabilis are morphologically comparable with their congeners from the Nearctic (i.e., United States and Canada), all other monogenoids exhibited Neotropical affinities. Present study shown that the gill monogenoids on native and non-native fishes in the Neotropical Mexican transition zone of the Usumacinta River basin are equally represented by species with Nearctic and Neotropical affinities including those adapted to freshwater environment in this area from marine ancestry.

Females of species of Lamproglena von Nordmann, 1832 are parasitic on the gills of teleost fishes and the 38 nominal species are based on mainly morphological data. Only four of these species have been genetically characterised and no mitochondrial data are available for the genus. The present study aimed to provide representative ribosomal DNA (rDNA) data for two additional species of Lamproglena from Africa: Lamproglena clariae Fryer, 1956 and Lamproglena hoi Dippenaar, Luus-Powell et Roux, 2001, alongside mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for these and two other African species, Lamproglena hemprichii von Nordmann, 1832 and Lamproglena monodi Capart, 1944. The four species were collected from Clariidae, Cyprinidae, Alestidae and Cichlidae, respectively. Representative 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA data were obtained for L. clariae and L. hoi, while cox1 mtDNA was obtained for all four species. The respective haplotypes supported the distinctness of all species using all three gene regions investigated. Interestingly, species appeared to be grouped more by geographical origin than host family, with L. hoi more closely related to other African species than to Asian species also collected from cyprinid hosts. Even though the results presented here greatly add to the molecular data available for Lamproglena, there are still 32 (>80%) species for which no genetic data are available. The interpretation of the results presented here is thus preliminary and much more data are required before the phylogeny of this genus, and other members of the family, such as Lernaea Linnaeus, 1758, can be studied appropriately.

Microplastic presence in aquatic environments is a major problem globally. This study quantified microplastic abundances in fish species across two systems in South Africa around wastewater treatment works. Fish (n = 163) were examined for microplastic in gills and gastrointestinal tracts. Microplastic levels were generally low during the cool-dry season (mean 11.0 - 34.0 particles per fish taxon), and high during the hot-wet season (mean 10.0 - 119.0 particles per fish taxon). The microplastic concentrations per fish were similar between these systems, with downstream of wastewater treatment plants having high microplastic abundances. Although benthopelagic feeders were dominant, pelagic feeders had high microplastic abundances (range 20-119 particles), followed by benthopelagic (range 10-110 particles) and demersal (22 particles) feeders. Multiple regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between fish standard length and total microplastic levels, which suggests fish consume more microplastics due to increased food demand as a result of growth.

Past sea level changes and geological instability along watershed boundaries have largely influenced fish distribution across coastal basins, either by dispersal via palaeodrainages now submerged or by headwater captures, respectively. Accordingly, the South American Atlantic coast encompasses several small and isolated drainages that share a similar species composition, representing a suitable model to infer historical processes. Leporinus bahiensis is a freshwater fish species widespread along adjacent coastal basins over narrow continental shelf with no evidence of palaeodrainage connections at low sea level periods. Therefore, this study aimed to reconstruct its evolutionary history to infer the role of headwater captures in the dispersal process. To accomplish this, we employed molecular-level phylogenetic and population structure analyses based on Sanger sequences (5 genes) and genome-wide SNP data. Phylogenetic trees based on Sanger data were inconclusive, but SNPs data did support the monophyletic status of L. bahiensis. Both COI and SNP data revealed structured populations according to each hydrographic basin. Species delimitation analyses revealed from 3 (COI) to 5 (multilocus approach) MOTUs, corresponding to the sampled basins. An intricate biogeographic scenario was inferred and supported by Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) analysis. Specifically, a staggered pattern was revealed and characterized by sequential headwater captures from basins adjacent to upland drainages into small coastal basins at different periods. These headwater captures resulted in dispersal throughout contiguous coastal basins, followed by deep genetic divergence among lineages. To decipher such recent divergences, as herein represented by L. bahiensis populations, we used genome-wide SNPs data. Indeed, the combined use of genome-wide SNPs data and ABC method allowed us to reconstruct the evolutionary history and speciation of L. bahiensis. This framework might be useful in disentangling the diversification process in other neotropical fishes subject to a reticulate geological history.

BACKGROUND: Ictalurus is one of the most representative groups of North American freshwater fishes. Although this group has a well-studied fossil record and has been the subject of several morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, incomplete taxonomic sampling and insufficient taxonomic studies have produced a rather complex classification, along with intricate patterns of evolutionary history in the genus that are considered unresolved and remain under debate. RESULTS: Based on four loci and the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling analyzed to date, including currently recognized species, previously synonymized species, undescribed taxa, and poorly studied populations, this study produced a resolved phylogenetic framework that provided plausible species delimitation and an evolutionary time framework for the genus Ictalurus. CONCLUSIONS: Our phylogenetic hypothesis revealed that Ictalurus comprises at least 13 evolutionary units, partially corroborating the current classification and identifying populations that emerge as putative undescribed taxa. The divergence times of the species indicate that the diversification of Ictalurus dates to the early Oligocene, confirming its status as one of the oldest genera within the family Ictaluridae.

We measured perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in prey and predator fish from Lake Michigan (USA) to investigate the occurrence and biomagnification of these compounds in this important ecosystem. Twenty-one PFAS were analyzed in 117 prey fish obtained from sites across Lake Michigan and in 87 salmonids collected in four lake quadrants. The mean concentration of sum (∑) PFAS above the method detection limit was 12.7 ± 6.96 ng g-1 wet weight in predator fish (all of which were salmonids) and 10.7 ± 10.4 ng g-1 in prey fish, with outlier levels found in slimy sculpin, Cottus cognatus (187 ± 12.2 ng g-1 ww). Perfluorooctanoic sulfonic acid (PFOS) was the most frequently detected and most abundant compound of the 21 PFAS, occurring in 98 % of individuals with a mean concentration of 9.86 ± 6.36 ng g-1 ww without outliers. Perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA) concentrations were higher in prey fish than in predators, with some compounds such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) being detected in higher frequency in prey fish. Besides PFOS, detection of several long-chain (C8-C12) PFCAs were observed in >80 % of the prey fish. Overall, the observed concentrations in Lake Michigan fish were lower than those reported in other Laurentian Great Lakes except for Lake Superior. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) for PFOS exceeded 1.0 (range, 1.80 to 5.12) in all predator-prey relationships analyzed, indicating biomagnification of these compounds, whereas BMFs of other long-chain PFCAs varied according to the fish species. PFAS were found in all fish species measured from Lake Michigan and commonly biomagnified from prey to predator fish, strongly suggesting a dietary connection.

Phenacogaster is the most species-rich genus of the subfamily Characinae with 23 valid species broadly distributed in riverine systems of South America. Despite the taxonomic diversity of the genus, little has been advanced about its molecular diversity. A recent molecular phylogeny indicated the presence of undescribed species within Phenacogaster that is formally described here. We sampled 73 specimens of Phenacogaster and sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in order to undertake species delimitation analyses and evaluate their intra- and interspecific genetic diversity. The results show the presence of 14 species, 13 of which are valid and one undescribed. The new species is known from the tributaries of the Xingu basin, the Rio das Mortes of the Araguaia basin, and the Rio Teles Pires of the Tapajós basin. It is distinguished by the incomplete lateral line, position of the humeral blotch near the pseudotympanum, and shape of the caudal-peduncle blotch. Meristic data and genetic differentiation relative to other Phenacogaster species represent strong evidence for the recognition of the new species and highlight the occurrence of an additional lineage of P.franciscoensis.

A new species of Phalloceros is described from the Tijucas, Maruim, Aririú, Cubatão do Sul, Rio da Madre, D'Una and Tubarão river basins in southern Brazil. The new species is diagnosed among congeners by the bilateral asymmetry of a hood-like structure located immediately anterior to the urogenital papilla of females. The hood is fused with the urogenital papilla on the right side, but free from the papilla on the left side. This hood is reported for the first time in the genus and is present in six of the 21 valid species of Phalloceros, but its bilateral asymmetry is an exclusive condition of the new species. These species do not constitute a monophyletic group. The new species is likely to be phylogenetically related to P. caudimaculatus, whose females have a symmetrical hood.
