RESUMO

Background: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and monopolar radiofrequency (MRF) are common treatment modalities that have shown significant results in skin tightening. Nevertheless, the novel combination of these two treatments is new to the Malaysian landscape. Thus, this study aims to investigate the safety and efficacy of this novel combination treatment for the Malaysian population. Methods: This retrospective study included data on HIFU and MRF combination therapy for skin tightening collected from an aesthetic clinic in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from June 2018 to May 2021. Efficacy was assessed using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and Glogau classification, while the safety of the treatment was analysed using pain scores and adverse events (AEs). Results: A total of 56 patients with a mean age of 47.7 years old (SD 10.00) were included in this study. The majority of the patients had Fitzpatrick skin types III and IV. Most of the patients were Chinese, followed by Malay, Indian and others. Most patients (96.4%) showed clinically significant improvement in skin tightening after treatment, with 15 patients scoring 1 (very much improved) and 39 scoring 2 (improved). All patients reported transient mild erythema, with no serious AEs, such as burn, swelling, numbness or muscle weakness. Among the patients, 80% reported a pain score of 5, while 10% reported pain scores of 4 and 6. Conclusion: Combining HIFU with MRF therapy improved GAIS scores by 96.4%, indicating a secure and efficient skin-tightening method. Transient erythema was shown to be the most common side effect of this combination.

RESUMO

Introduction: Even lightly compromised skin may impact self-esteem and social behaviour. After intradermal infiltration, natural-origin Polynucleotides High Purification Technology (PN HPT) promote new collagen and extracellular matrix production, translating into a physiological correction of the ageing skin. The study aimed to explore the benefits of intradermal PN HPT on the four perceptual skin quality categories "Skin Tone Evenness", "Skin Surface Evenness", "Skin Firmness", and "Skin Glow" in a representative sample of 30 Asian subjects (mean age 40.2± 11.4 years old). Methods: Study protocol: three intradermal injections of a PN HPT-based Class III CE-marked medical device at T0 (baseline assessment and first treatment session), T1 (four weeks after baseline), and T2 (eight weeks after baseline), with efficacy and safety evaluations at T1, T2, T3 (four months after baseline) and T4 (six months after baseline). Quantitative and qualitative assessments: 3D skin analysis system QuantifiCare and Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS, Investigator and Patient subscales). Results: PN HPT treatment led to a meaningful and statistically significant improvement of the skin surface, firmness, pigmentation, and radiance, with no early- or late-onset adverse events and benefits persisting up to the sixth-month visit in all subjects. At T4, 33% and 43% of treated subjects felt "Much Improved" and "Very Much Improved" (optimal result); 56% and 44% of treated subjects felt "Satisfied" or "Very Satisfied". At T4, the mean Investigator GAIS scores were 3.33 out of 5.0 for the "Skin Tone Evenness" skin quality perceptual category, 3.46 for the "Skin Surface Evenness" category, 3.61 for "Skin Firmness", and 3.45 per for the radiance determinant of the "Skin Glow" category. Conclusion: Intradermal treatment with the PN HPT-based medical device led to a meaningful improvement of the skin surface, firmness, pigmentation, and radiance with complete safety. The aesthetic benefits persisted up to the sixth-month visit in all subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The deepening of the nasolabial fold (NLF) is a common occurrence during the aging process, necessitating the development of an objective method to evaluate changes in NLFs. The objective of our study was to introduce a method of depth deviation based on three-dimensional (3D) image for evaluating the efficacy of hyaluronic acid (HA) injection in correcting NLFs. METHODS: Between May 2019 and November 2019, we recruited 56 Chinese volunteers with moderate to severe NLFs for this study. The participants received HA injections and were followed up for a period of 12 months. Pre and posttreatment, we collected the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) scores and 3D images. To assess the efficacy of NLF correction, we used the maximum value of depth deviation (MVD) based on 3D images and the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) score. Additionally, we compared the relationship between MVD and other clinical parameters. RESULTS: Fifty-four female participants completed the study and were included in the analysis. The HA injection resulted in a significant decrease in NLF severity (p < 0.05). One month after the injection, the average GAIS score was 4.72 ± 0.45, and the average MVD was 2.10 ± 0.56 mm. Both the GAIS score and the average MVD exhibited a decline over time during the follow-up period, with the average MVD showing a significant correlation with the GAIS score at all time points (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using 3D technology, we demonstrated that the quantitative data provided by MVD can serve as an objective method for evaluating the correction of NLFs.

RESUMO

Background: Global facial rejuvenation using injectables (neuromodulators and fillers) has reported patient satisfaction after 2 treatments: an initial and touch-up treatment at 2-4 weeks afterward. In practice, patients typically receive only 1 treatment and do not return for a touch-up treatment within a month. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess patient-reported satisfaction after only 1 treatment, thus mimicking real-world scenarios. Methods: Patients with facial photoaging (Glogau facial aging scale ≥2) were treated with calcium hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid 22.5 mg/mL, and incobotulinumtoxinA injections for full facial rejuvenation, with no touch-up treatments. Patients completed the FACE-Q Satisfaction with Facial Appearance survey at baseline and 1- and 3-month post-treatment. The treating physician completed the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale at 1- and 3-month post-treatment. Results: Twenty-two patients were enrolled in the study, with 1 patient lost to follow-up. There was a significant improvement in mean FACE-Q scores at 1-month (80.1, P = .01) and 3-month (77.9, P = .02) compared to baseline (71.4). Mean Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale scores at 1-month (2.1) and 3-month (2.2) were not statistically significant, indicating sustained improvement at 3 months. The product amount used per patient varied and was not correlated with either score. Limitations included a lack of a control group and follow-up ending at 3 months. Strengths included assessment of patient satisfaction after only 1 treatment, compared to other studies allowing 2 treatments. Limitations: Limitations include a small sample size and lack of a control group. Conclusion: Global full facial rejuvenation using 1 treatment of calcium hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid 22.5 mg/mL, and incobotulinumtoxinA provides sustained patient-reported satisfaction at 3 months.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Body contouring is a significant area of dermatologic and plastic surgery. Surgical procedures, like surgical lipectomy, and less invasive procedures, such as various liposuction techniques, are the two main ways to reduce fat. AIM: Our study showed that 1444 nm Nd:YAG laser-assisted lipolysis used with appropriate and specific parameters effectively destroys adipose tissue avoiding these risks and determining a safe clinical application. METHOD: A subcutaneous, 1444 nm Nd:YAG laser was used on 132 patients (range, 18-73 years; 109 women and 23 men with Fitzpatrick skin phototypes ranging between II and V) requiring body and face contouring. All patients were photographed for documentation. Digital clinical photography was taken under as near identical conditions as possible at baseline (pre-treatment), and 16 weeks post-treatment. The 5-point Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) was recorded immediately after treatment and at their final assessment session (4 months). Adverse events were monitored. RESULTS: On the basis of the investigator-evaluated GAIS scale, the total GAIS scores showed satisfactory results. Clinician assessment from the clinical photography showed good efficacy and visible aesthetic results for body and face areas. No serious or unexpected adverse side effects were recorded, and transient pain, oedema, erythema and slight induration resolved within the first week of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The 1444 nm Nd:YAG laser is a new tool for performing lipolysis, and this study reports its effectiveness and safety.

Abstract: The Emotional Intimacy Scale (EIE) is a self-report instrument that assesses emotional intimacy in close relationships. The aim of this research was to examine the psychometric properties of the EIE for its use in heterosexual, gay and lesbian people who are currently involved in a couple relationship. The sample consisted of 883 Chileans, (404 men and 479 women; 565 heterosexuals and 318 homosexual), between the ages of 18 and 72. Using a Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the one-dimensional structure of the scale was replicated, achieving a good fit to the data, while the multi-group analysis revealed that the EIE-E (Spanish version) is invariant according to sex and sexual orientation. The internal consistency indices using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald Omega were appropriate, and a positive association was observed between emotional intimacy and relationship satisfaction. Finally, results showed that lesbian women showed higher levels of intimacy relative to the other groups. It is concluded that the EIE-E is an appropriate instrument for the study of emotional intimacy in people who are in a couple relationship, be they heterosexual men or women, gays or lesbians.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To recognise the changes experienced by the therapist who works with gay and lesbian couples. Method: Qualitative with biographical-narrative method. Seven therapists were interviewed in Medellin. Results: Three moments in the life trajectory of the participants were identified: Before: close ness and distances between families and the school were found (distances, makes reference, among others, to discourses about homosexuality). During: showed the conspiracy of silence in the undergraduate and postgraduate training of therapists, and in the clinical approach with homosexual couples they perceive in the reasons for consultation, a spectrum between everyday conflict and imposed exclusion. After: makes reference to the changes that this clinical work has generated in them, how they have become different, while others have been defined as: political subjects who resist normalisation and become learners of artistic territories and artisans of their own lives. Conclusions: The task of becoming another is a poetic, aesthetic and ethical process like the beautiful creation of the own existence. These transformations are connected with presence, social, politic and artistic contexts, reflexive labour and criticism about themselves.

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we applied two incisionless suture techniques for otoplasty: Haytoglu et al.'s modification of incisionless otoplasty technique and Fritsch's incisionless otoplasty technique for correction of prominent ears. METHODS: In this prospective study, 60 patients with prominent ears were included in the study. In Group 1, 55 ears of 30 patients (25 bilateral and 5 unilateral) were operated with Haytoglu et al.'s modification of incisionless otoplasty technique. In Group 2, 57 ears of 30 patients (27 bilateral and 3 unilateral) were operated with Fritsch's incisionless otoplasty technique. For comparison of two methods, auriculocephalic distances were measured at three levels which were level 1 (the most superior point of the auricle), level 2 (the midpoint of the auricle) and level 3 (level of the lobule) pre-operatively (preop); and measurements were repeated at the end of the surgery (PO(0-day)), 1st month (PO(1-Mo)) and 6th month (PO(6-Mo)) after the surgery, in both groups. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS). Moreover, Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) was rated by an independent, non-participating plastic surgeon at 6 months after the surgery. RESULTS: Operation time was 15.9±5.6min in Group 1 (Haytoglu et al.'s) and 19±4.7min in Group 2 (Fritsch). Hematoma, infection, bleeding, keloid scar formation, sharp edges or irregularities of the cartilage were not observed in any group. Suture extrusion was detected in 14.03% of Group 1 and 16.1% of Group 2. No statistically significant difference was observed between auriculocephalic distances at levels 1-3 of groups at preop, PO(0-day), PO(1-Mo) and PO(6-Mo) separately. Similarly, difference in auriculocephalic distances (preop values-PO(6-Mo) values) was not detected as statistically significant in Groups 1 and 2 at three levels. In both techniques, No statistically significant difference was observed in patient satisfaction at 6th months after the operation which was measured using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) on 0 to 100 scales. According to GAIS, the patients were rated as 92.9% "improved" and 7.1% "no change" in Group 1; as 94.6% "improved" and 5.4% "no change" in Group 2. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the similar results, Haytoglu et al.'s and Fritsch's incisionless otoplasty techniques are good options in the treatment of prominent ears, especially in pediatric patients with isolated inadequate development of antihelical ridge, and with soft auricular cartilage.

RESUMO

This paper intends to validate the Attitudes toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (Herek, 1988). The starting point is the five dimensions reported in previous studies (Cárdenas & Barrientos, 2008). No research has confirmed the hypothesized ATLG factor structure with a Spanish-language sample. This study tested three factor structures, results indicating that the two-factor second-order model provides the best description of ATLG items. Additionally, psychometric properties were examined using a sample of 518 college students. ATLG proved reliable (a = 0.93) and valid for Chilean population.
