RESUMO

Iron and zinc deficiencies cause high health risk to young children and expectant mothers in sub Saharan Africa. The development of biofortified common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varieties could address the acute micronutrient deficiencies with associated improvement in the nutrition and health of women, children and adults. The objective of this study was to determine the mode of gene action and genetic advance in iron and zinc levels in common bean. Field experiment was carried out using six generations of two populations made of crosses between pairs of low iron, low zinc and high iron, moderate zinc genotypes (Cal 96 Ë£ RWR 2154; MCR-ISD-672 Ë£ RWR 2154). Each generation (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1 and BC1P2) was evaluated on the field in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Generation mean analysis were performed for each trait measured in each of the crosses while iron and zinc levels were quantified by x-ray fluorescence. The study showed that both additive and non-additive gene effects were important in determining the expression of high iron and zinc levels. Iron concentration in the common bean seeds ranged from 60.68 to 101.66 ppm while zinc levels ranged from 25.87 to 34.04 ppm. Broad sense heritability estimates of iron and zinc were high in the two crosses (62-82% for Fe and 60-74% for Zn) while narrow sense heritability ranged from low to high (53-75% for Fe and 21-46% for Zn). Heritability and genetic gain were used as selection criteria for iron and zinc, and it was concluded that doing so would be beneficial for future improvement.

RESUMO

Tocopherol is vital for the nutritional value and stability of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) oil; nonetheless, the lack of information on genetic control is hampering its improvement. In this study, six populations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1, and BC1P2) of RLC3 × NPJ203 were evaluated in a family block design to evaluate the inheritance pattern, gene effects, and various other genetic parameters of tocopherol content (α, γ, and total), using generation mean analysis. The comparison of direct and reciprocal crosses indicated that the tocopherol content was not influenced by maternal inheritance. Negative directional heterosis showed that ATC, GTC, and TTC are governed by recessive genes. Potence ratio and degree of dominance highlighted an over-dominance type of gene interaction for GTC and TTC, whereas ATC was governed by epistatic interactions. Furthermore, the six-parameter model revealed a duplicate gene action for α-tocopherol content. Broad and narrow sense heritability coupled with genetic advances were high.

RESUMO

Abstract Wheat breeders frequently use generation mean analysis to obtain information on the type of gene action involved in inheriting a trait to choose the helpful breeding procedure for trait improvement. The present study was carried out to study the inter-allelic and intra-allelic gene action and inheritance of glaucousness, earliness and yield traits in a bread wheat cross between divergent parents in glaucousness and yield traits; namely Mut-2 (P1) and Sakha 93 (P2). The experimental material included six populations, i.e. P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 for this wheat cross. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used, and a six parameters model was applied. Additive effects were generally more critical than dominance for all studied traits, except for plant height (PH) and grain yield/plant (GYPP). The duplicate epistasis was observed in spike length; SL, spikes/plant; SPP and days to heading; DTH. All six types of allelic and non-allelic interaction effects controlled SL, GYPP, DTH and glaucousness. All three types of epistasis, i.e. additive x additive, additive x dominance, and dominance x dominance, are essential in determining the inheritance of four traits (SL, GYPP, DTH and glaucousness). Dominance × dominance effects were higher in magnitude than additive × dominance and additive × additive in most traits. The average degree of dominance was minor than unity in six traits (glaucousness, grains/spike, spike weight, days to maturity, 100-grain weight and SL), indicating partial dominance and selection for these traits might be more effective in early generations. Meanwhile, the remaining traits (PH, SPP, GYPP and DTH) had a degree of dominance more than unity, indicating that overdominance gene effects control such traits and it is preferable to postpone selection to later generations. The highest values of narrow-sense heritability and genetic advance were recorded by glaucousness trait followed by SL and SPP, indicating that selection in segregating generations would be more effective than other traits.

Sclerotinia stem rot is one of the utmost important disease of mustard, causing considerable losses in seed yield and oil quality. The study of the genetic and proteomic basis of resistance to this disease is imperative for its effective utilization in developing resistant cultivars. Therefore, the genetic pattern of Sclerotinia stem rot resistance in Indian mustard was studied using six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1, and BC1P2) developed from the crossing of one resistant (RH 1222-28) and two susceptible (EC 766300 and EC 766123) genotypes. Genetic analysis revealed that resistance was governed by duplicate epistasis. Comparative proteome analysis of resistant and susceptible genotypes indicated that peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (A0A078IDN6 PPIase) showed high expression in resistant genotype at the early infection stage while its expression was delayed in susceptible genotypes. This study provides important insight to mustard breeders for designing effective breeding programs to develop resistant cultivars against this devastating disease.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) with purple-red leaf is a valuable resource for plant breeder. It was utilized in breeding program as a morphological marker, and the source of resistance gene to biotic or abiotic stress due to its anthocyanin content (AC). However, the inheritance of AC and the correlation with chlorophyll content (CC) in rapeseed leaf are still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the gene action and heritability of AC and CC in a 10-Zi006 × 10-4438 rapeseed cross using generation mean analysis. The results indicated that AC and CC were controlled by main gene effect and non-allelic interactions. The AC was mainly controlled by genetic effect. However, the genetic effect and non-genetic effect were both important for CC. In addition, the total fixable gene effects was higher than unfixable gene effects for AC, but opposite results was found for CC. Both negative and positive correlations between AC and CC were obtained in different generations.

The between-population genetic architecture for growth and maturation has not been examined in detail for many animal species despite its central importance in understanding hybrid fitness. We studied the genetic architecture of population divergence in: (i) maturation probabilities at the same age; (ii) size at age and growth, while accounting for maturity status and sex; and (iii) growth plasticity in response to environmental factors, using divergent wild and domesticated Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Our work examined two populations and their multigenerational hybrids in a common experimental arrangement in which salinity and quantity of suspended sediments were manipulated to mimic naturally occurring environmental variation. Average specific growth rates across environments differed among crosses, maturity groups, and cross-by-maturity groups, but a growth-rate reduction in the presence of suspended sediments was equal for all groups. Our results revealed both additive and nonadditive outbreeding effects for size at age and for growth rates that differed with life stage, as well as the presence of different sex- and size-specific maturation probabilities between populations. The major implication of our work is that estimates of the genetic architecture of growth and maturation can be biased if one does not simultaneously account for temporal changes in growth and for different maturation probabilities between populations. Namely, these correlated traits interact differently within each population and between sexes and among generations, due to nonadditive effects and a level of independence in the genetic control for traits. Our results emphasize the challenges to investigating and predicting phenotypic changes resulting from between-population outbreeding.
