Due to the growing demand for human-edible protein sources, microalgae are recognized as an economically viable alternative source of proteins. The investigation into the structural characteristics and functional properties of microalgin is highly significant for its potential application in the food industry as an alternative source of protein. In this research, we extracted protein from Euglena gracilis by using alkaline extraction and acid precipitation and investigated its structural characteristics and functional properties in different acidic and alkaline environments. The molecular weight distribution of Euglena gracilis protein (EGP), as revealed by the size exclusion chromatography results, ranges from 152 to 5.7 kDa. EGP was found to be rich in hydrophobic amino acids and essential amino acids. Fourier infrared analysis revealed that EGP exhibited higher α-helix structure content and lower ß-sheet structure content in alkaline environments compared with acidic ones. EGP exhibited higher foaming properties, emulsifying activity index, solubility, free sulfhydryl, and total sulfhydryl in pH environments far from its isoelectric point, and lower fluorescence intensity (2325 A.U.), lower surface hydrophobicity, larger average particle size (25.13 µm), higher emulsifying stability index, and water-holding capacity in pH environments near its isoelectric point. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that different acidic and alkaline environments lead to reductions in the crystal size and crystallinity of EGP. EGP exhibited high denaturation temperature (Td; 99.32 °C) and high enthalpy (ΔH; 146.33 J/g) at pH 11.0, as shown by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results. The findings from our studies on EGP in different acidic and alkaline environments provide a data basis for its potential commercial utilization as a food ingredient in products such as emulsions, gels, and foams.

Euglena gracilis, a fascinating organism in the scientific realm, exhibits characteristics of both animals and plants. It maintains redox homeostasis through a variety of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant molecules. In contrast to mammals, Euglena possesses non-selenocysteine glutathione peroxidase homologues that regulate its intracellular pools of reactive oxygen species. In the present study, a full-length cDNA of chloroplastic EgGPXL-1 was isolated and subjected to biochemical and functional characterization. Recombinant EgGPXL-1 scavenged H2O2 and t-BOOH utilizing thioredoxin as an electron donor rather than glutathione. Despite its monomeric nature, EgGPXL-1 exhibits allosteric behavior with H2O2 as the electron acceptor and follows typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics with t-BOOH. Suppression of EgGPXL-1 gene expression under normal and high-light conditions did not induce critical situations in E. gracilis, suggesting the involvement of compensatory mechanisms in restoring normal conditions.

Rangelands are the dominant land use across a broad swath of central North America where they span a wide gradient, from <350 to >900 mm, in mean annual precipitation. Substantial efforts have examined temporal and spatial variation in aboveground net primary production (ANPP) to precipitation (PPT) across this gradient. In contrast, net secondary productivity (NSP, e.g., primary consumer production) has not been evaluated analogously. However, livestock production, which is a form of NSP or primary consumer production supported by primary production, is the dominant non-cultivated land use and an integral economic driver in these regions. Here, we used long-term (mean length = 19 years) ANPP and NSP data from six research sites across the Central Great Plains with a history of a conservative stocking to determine resource (i.e., PPT)-productivity relationships, NSP sensitivities to dry-year precipitation, and regional trophic efficiencies (e.g., NSP:ANPP ratio). PPT-ANPP relationships were linear for both temporal (site-based) and spatial (among site) gradients. The spatial PPT-NSP model revealed that PPT mediated a saturating relationship for NSP as sites became more mesic, a finding that contrasts with many plant-based PPT-ANPP relationships. A saturating response to high growing-season precipitation suggests biogeochemical rather than vegetation growth constraints may govern NSP (i.e., large herbivore production). Differential sensitivity in NSP to dry years demonstrated that the primary consumer production response heightened as sites became more xeric. Although sensitivity generally decreased with increasing precipitation as predicted from known PPT-ANPP relationships, evidence suggests that the dominant species' identity and traits influenced secondary production efficiency. Non-native northern mixed-grass prairie was outperformed by native Central Great Plains rangeland in sensitivity to dry years and efficiency in converting ANPP to NSP. A more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms leading to differences in producer and consumer responses will require multisite experiments to assess biotic and abiotic determinants of multi-trophic level efficiency and sensitivity.

Pseudosasa gracilis (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) is a temperate woody bamboo species endemic to South-central China with a narrow distribution. Previous phylogenetic studies revealed an unexpected, isolated phylogenetic position of Ps. gracilis. Here we conducted phylogenomic analysis by sampling populations of Ps. gracilis and its sympatric species Ps. nanunica and Sinosasa polytricha reflecting different genomic signals, by deep genome skimming. Integrating molecular evidence from chloroplast genes and genome-wide SNPs, we deciphered the phylogenetic relationships of Ps. gracilis. Both plastid and nuclear data indicate that Ps. gracilis is more closely related to Sinosasa, which is discordant with the taxonomic treatment. To further explore this molecular-morphological conflict, we screened 411 "perfect-copy" syntenic genes to reconstruct phylogenies using both the concatenation and coalescent methods. We observed extensive discordance between gene trees and the putative species tree. A significant hybridization event was detected based on 411 genes from the D subgenome, showing Ps. gracilis was a hybrid descendant between Sinosasa longiligulata and Ps. nanunica, with 63.56% and 36.44% inheritance probabilities of each parent. Moreover, introgression events were detected in the C subgenome between Ps. gracilis and S. polytricha in the same distribution region. Our findings suggest that sympatric hybridization and introgression play a crucial role in the origin of Ps. gracilis. By providing an empirical example of bamboo of hybrid origin using comprehensive analyses based on genomic data from different inheritance systems and morphological characters, our study represents a step forward in understanding of reticulate evolution of bamboos.

Despite the growing use of autologous breast reconstruction with medial thigh-based free flaps, such as transverse upper gracilis (TMG) or profunda artery perforator (PAP) flaps, these procedures are infrequently performed on patients with obesity. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the frequency of seroma occurrence, a common complication after medial thigh flap surgery. Comparison was performed between TMG and PAP flaps, as well as medial thigh lifts (MTL), a procedure with a similar operative technique but which is typically offered to patients with a higher body mass index (BMI). Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, we analyzed EMBASE, PUBMED, and MEDLINE data (English/German). The primary outcomes assessed were occurrence of seroma, as well as hematoma and wound dehiscence. Subgroup analyses explored age, BMI, and various surgical factors. This meta-analysis incorporated 28 studies, totaling 1096 patients. MTL patients had significantly higher BMIs, whereas seroma rates were similar among TMG, PAP, and MTL patients. The incidence of hematoma and wound dehiscence was also similar across the groups. In the metaregression analysis, factors such as age and BMI showed no significant correlation with seroma occurrence in all groups. This systematic review and meta-analysis identified comparable rates of seroma formation after TMG flap, PAP flap, and MTL procedures. Considering that this phenomenon occurred despite the elevated BMI of the MTL group, we propose that patients with higher BMI need not be excluded as candidates for autologous medial thigh-based breast reconstruction. Hence, these procedures should not be limited to small- to medium-sized breasts. Large-scale prospective studies are imperative to validate these conclusions and reveal the underlying factors contributing to seroma formation.

Extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) enhances genomic plasticity, augmenting its coding and regulatory potential. Advances in high-throughput sequencing have enabled the investigation of these structural variants. Although eccDNAs have been investigated in numerous taxa, they remained understudied in euglenids. Therefore, we examined eccDNAs predicted from Illumina sequencing data of Euglena gracilis Z SAG 1224-5/25, grown under optimal photoperiod and exposed to UV irradiation. We identified approximately 1000 unique eccDNA candidates, about 20% of which were shared across conditions. We also observed a significant enrichment of mitochondrially encoded eccDNA in the UV-irradiated sample. Furthermore, we found that the heterogeneity of eccDNA was reduced in UV-exposed samples compared to cells that were grown in optimal conditions. Hence, eccDNA appears to play a role in the response to oxidative stress in Euglena, as it does in other studied organisms. In addition to contributing to the understanding of Euglena genomes, our results contribute to the validation of bioinformatics pipelines on a large, non-model genome.

OBJECTIVE(S): The purpose of this study was to compare the regeneration of semitendinosus and gracilis tendons from two different graft harvesting techniques, which are the stump preservation and conventional graft harvesting techniques. We hypothesised that the stump preservation graft harvesting technique, which preserved the distal attachment of tendons at their insertion, would facilitate anatomical regeneration to the pes anserinus. METHODS: This is a prospective, randomised, double-blinded study whereby thirty consecutive patients who underwent single bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with ipsilateral semitendinosus and gracilis autografts were recruited. The patients were randomly assigned to the stump preservation group (14 patients) or conventional group (16 patients). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation was performed preoperatively and at six months post-operatively. RESULTS: At 6-month follow-up, MRI evaluations showed a higher percentage of insertion of regenerated semitendinosus and gracilis at the pes anserinus in the stump preservation group (75.0%) than that in the conventional group (68.8%). There was a significantly higher proximal shift of the musculotendinous junction of semitendinosus (5.70 â€‹cm versus 3.36 â€‹cm, p â€‹= â€‹0.029) and gracilis (5.28 â€‹cm versus 3.16 â€‹cm, p â€‹= â€‹0.045) in the conventional group post-operatively. CONCLUSION: The stump preservation technique yields a higher percentage of anatomical insertion of regenerated tendons and a lesser amount of proximal shift of the musculotendinous junction. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III - Prospective study with up to two negative criteria.

BACKGROUND: Skin-grafted free gracilis muscle flaps are commonly used for lower extremity reconstruction. However, the loss of sensory function may lead to increased patient morbidity. This study prospectively analyzed the sensory and neuropathic pain outcomes of neurotized skin-grafted free gracilis muscle flaps used for the reconstruction of lower extremity defects. METHODS: Patients undergoing lower extremity reconstructions between 2020 and 2022 with neurotized skin-grafted free gracilis muscle flaps were prospectively enrolled. Sensation was assessed at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively using monofilaments, two-point discrimination, a vibration device, and cold and warm metal rods. Sensations were tested in the center and periphery of the flaps, as well as in the surrounding skin. The contralateral side served as the control. Patients completed the McGill pain questionnaire to evaluate patient-reported neuropathic pain. RESULTS: Ten patients were included. At 12 months postoperatively, monofilament values improved by 44.5% compared to that of the control site, two-point discrimination, cold detection, warmth detection, and vibration detection improved by 36.2%, 48%, 50%, and 88.2%, respectively, at the reconstructed site compared to those at the control site. All sensory tests were significantly better than 3 and 6 months values (p < 0.05), but remained significantly poorer than the control site (p < 0.05). Sensation in the central flap areas were similar to peripheral flap areas throughout the follow-up period (p > 0.05). The surrounding skin reached values similar to the control site at 12 months (p > 0.05). Moreover, 50% of patients reported neuropathic pain at 3 months postoperatively, 40% at 6 months, and 0% at 12 months (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mechanical detection, vibration detection, temperature detection, and two-point discrimination significantly improved over time but without reaching normal sensory function at 12 months postoperatively. Neuropathic pain resolved at 12 months.

Traumatic brachial plexus injury is the most common indication for functional free muscle transfer, and elbow flexion recovery is the functional target, followed by shoulder stability and hand reanimation. In this article, we provide a literature review of functional free muscle transfer (FFMT) for adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries and the surgical technical recommendations to achieve the best functional results with FFMT for adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries.

Polysaccharides were extracted from Gracilaria gracilis collected from Manzel Jemil Lake in Bizerte Tunisia, with two different solvents (water and NaOH 0.3 M). Different assays were performed on samples (total sugars, neutral sugars, uronic acids, anhydrogalactose, proteins, sulphates, pyruvates), followed by high performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) to observe the monosaccharide composition, high pressure size exclusion chromatography with multi-angle laser light scattering (HPSEC-MALS) to obtain the molecular mass, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to access to structural data. Results have shown that the polysaccharide extracted from Gracilaria gracilis collected from Manzel Jemil Lake in Bizerte Tunisia, is of agar type but with high molecular mass and some original structural features. Hence, the sample was found to contain 9 % of pyruvate groups and is partly sulphated at the C4 of ß-d-galactose and methylated on C2 of anhydro-α-l-galactose. The polymer from G. gracilis from Bizerte thus presents a never described structure that could be interesting for further rheological or biological activities applications.

Euglena gracilis is a unicellular eukaryote between animal and plant cells, which is widely distributed in nature. E. gracilis has both plant and animal characteristics, and can grow photoautotrophically, heterotrophically and mixotrophically. E. gracilis also features on abundant and various cellular composition. Recently, extensive researches on unique cellular components of E. gracilis have revealed its application in the field of medicine, food, and feedstuff, in terms of improving immunity, fighting inflammation, and lowering uric acid levels. The application prospects of paramylon in biomedical area were also discovered. As food ingredients, food additives, feedstuffs and cosmetic ingredients, E. gracilis has been certified domestically and overseas. A series of products have been developed overseas, especially in Japan. However, the research and development of E. gracilis are still in its infancy in China, and there is huge space for development. At present, the research and potential application of cultivation and product functions of E. gracilis have been rarely reviewed. This review systematically examines both the domestic and abroad research of cultivation and production of E. gracilis, as well as the biological activity of E. gracilis powder and paramylon. The existing problems in the application, exploitation, and possible development direction of E. gracilis in the future are prospected. This review might be useful for establishing and optimizing large-scale and efficient heterotrophic technology, as well as developing related products of E. gracilis with specific functions.

This study confirms for the first time that the significant red coloration of Euglena gracilis is induced by bonito stock (BS), a traditional Japanese food, and intense red light exposure (605~660 nm, 1000~1300 µmol photons/m2/s). Under the condition, excessive photosynthetic activity destroyed many chloroplasts, while carotenoids were maintained, resulting in the formation of reddened cells. The HPLC analysis revealed that diadinoxanthin was the primary carotenoid present in reddened cells. Additionally, an undefined xanthophyll, not produced under normal culture conditions, was synthesized and suggested to contain a C=O bond. While it has been reported that strong light stress can increase the total carotenoid content of cells, this study did not verify this claim, and it should be investigated further in future research. Under white light irradiation conditions (90 µmol photons/m2/s) in BS medium, no reddening of cells was observed, and good growth was achieved (over four times the cell density in CM medium on the seventh day). This cell suspension is considered to have a high nutritional value because it is composed of functional food, BS and E. gracilis. The fact that this method does not involve genetic modification suggests the possibility of industrial applications, including food use, even in reddened cells.

Hydroxynitrile lyase (HNL) from the cyanogenic millipede Oxidus gracillis (OgraHNL) is a crucial enzyme in the cyanogenesis pathway. Here, the crystal structures of OgraHNL complexed with sulfate, benzaldehyde (BA), (R)-mandelonitrile ((R)-Man), (R)-2-chloromandelonitrile ((R)-2-Cl-Man), and acetone cyanohydrin (ACN) were solved at 1.6, 1.7, 2.3, 2.1, and 2.0 Šresolutions, respectively. The structure of OgraHNL revealed that it belonged to the lipocalin superfamily. Based on this structure, positive variants were designed to further improve the catalytic activity and enantioselectivity of the enzyme for asymmetric hydrocyanation and Henry reactions.

Age-dependent changes in the transcription levels of 5-day-old Euglena gracilis cells, which showed positive gravitaxis, 6-day-old cells without gravitactic orientation, and older cells (9- and 11-day-old, which displayed a precise negative gravitaxis) were determined through microarray analysis. Hierarchical clustering of four independent cell cultures revealed pronounced similarities in transcription levels at the same culture age, which proves the reproducibility of the cultivation method. Employing the non-oriented cells from the 6-day-old culture as a reference, about 2779 transcripts were found to be differentially expressed. While positively gravitactic cells (5-day-old culture) showed only minor differences in gene expression compared to the 6-day reference, pronounced changes of mRNAs (mainly an increase) were found in older cells compared to the reference culture. Among others, genes coding for adenylyl cyclases, photosynthesis, and metabolic enzymes were identified to be differentially expressed. The investigated cells were grown in batch cultures, so variations in transcription levels most likely account for factors such as nutrient depletion in the medium and self-shading. Based on these findings, a particular transcript (e.g., transcript 19556) was downregulated using the RNA interference technique. Gravitaxis and phototaxis were impaired in the transformants, indicating the role of this transcript in signal transduction. Results of the experiment are discussed regarding the increasing importance of E. gracilis in biotechnology as a source of valuable products and the possible application of E. gracilis in life-support systems.

The conventional approach to harvest of the gracilis muscle flap necessitates a medial thigh incision that is often related to several donor site complications. In this report we describe the robotic harvest of the free gracilis muscle flap in order to reduce the morbidity associated with the open incision. Through three ports, the robotic system (Da Vinci Xi, Intuitive Surgical) enables precise dissection of the gracilis muscle, the vascular pedicle, and the obturator nerve; thus, enhancing surgical control, optimizing visualization through magnification, aiding in detailed vascular pedicle dissection and minimizing human error. We believe that the technique of totally robotic harvest of the free gracilis muscle flap, herein introduced, is a feasible and effective approach, and confers specific advantages over traditional harvest technique.

BACKGROUND: High-risk patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection and pelvic exenteration may benefit from immediate flap reconstruction. However, there is currently no consensus on the ideal flap choice or patient for whom this is necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of using pedicled gracilis flaps for pelvic reconstruction and to analyze predictors of postoperative complications. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of a single reconstructive surgeon's cases between January 2012 and June 2021 identifying patients who underwent perineal reconstruction secondary to oncologic resection. Preoperative and outcome variables were collected and analyzed to determine the risk of developing minor and major wound complications. RESULTS: A total of 101 patients were included in the study with most patients (n = 88) undergoing unilateral gracilis flap reconstruction after oncologic resection. The mean follow-up period was 75 months. Of 101 patients, 8 (7.9%) developed early major complications, and an additional 13 (12.9%) developed late major complications. Minor complications developed in 33 patients (32.7%) with most cases being minor wound breakdown requiring local wound care. Most patients (n = 92, 91.1%) did not develop donor site complications. Anal cancer was significantly associated with early major complications, whereas younger age and elevated body mass index were significant predictors of developing minor wound complications. CONCLUSIONS: This study builds on our previous work that demonstrated the long-term success rate of gracilis flap reconstruction after large pelvic oncologic resections. A few patients developed donor site complications, and perineal complications were usually easily managed with local wound care, thus making the gracilis flap an attractive alternative to abdominal-based flaps.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Whether there is a difference in harvesting the semitendinosus tendon alone (S) or in combination with the gracilis tendon (SG) for the recovery of knee flexor strength after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the recovery of knee flexor strength based on the autograft composition, S or SG autograft at 6, 12, and ≥ 24 months after ACL reconstruction. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed encompassing the Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline, PEDRo and AMED databases from inception to January 2023. Inclusion criteria were human clinical trials published in English, comprised of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), longitudinal cohort-, cross-sectional and case-control studies that compared knee flexor strength recovery between S and SG autografts in patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction. Isokinetic peak torques were summarized for angular velocities of 60°/s, 180°/s, and across all angular velocities, assessed at 6, 12, and ≥ 24 months after ACL reconstruction. A random-effects model was used with standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals. Risk of bias was assessed with the RoBANS for non-randomized studies and the Cochrane RoB 2 tool for RCTs. Certainty of evidence was appraised using the GRADE working group methodology. RESULTS: Among the 1,227 patients from the 15 included studies, 604 patients received treatment with S autograft (49%), and 623 received SG autograft (51%). Patients treated with S autograft displayed lesser strength deficits at 6 months across all angular velocities d = -0.25, (95% CI -0.40; -0.10, p = 0.001). Beyond 6 months after ACL reconstruction, no significant difference was observed between autograft compositions. CONCLUSION: The harvest of S autograft for ACL reconstruction yields superior knee flexor strength recovery compared to SG autograft 6 months after ACL reconstruction, irrespective of angular velocity at isokinetic testing. However, the clinical significance of the observed difference in knee flexor strength between autograft compositions at 6 months is questionable, given the very low certainty of evidence and small effect size. There was no significant difference in knee flexor strength recovery between autograft compositions beyond 6 months after ACL reconstruction. TRIAL REGISTRATION: CRD42022286773.

PURPOSE: Gracilis muscle flaps are useful to cover defects of the hand. However, there are currently no studies describing outcome measurements after covering soft tissue defects using free flaps in the hand. AIM: To analyze mid-term results of gracilis muscle flap coverage for defects on the hand, with regard to functional and esthetic integrity. METHODS: 16 patients aged 44.3 (range 20-70) years were re-examined after a mean follow-up of 23.6 (range 2-77) months. Mean defect size was 124 (range 52-300) cm2 located palmar (n = 9), dorsal (n = 6), or radial (n = 1). All flaps were performed as microvascular muscle flaps, covered by split thickness skin graft. RESULTS: Flaps survived in 15 patients. 6 patients required reoperations. Reasons for revisions were venous anastomosis failure with total flap loss (n = 1) requiring a second gracilis muscle flap; necrosis at the tip of the flap (n = 1) with renewed split thickness skin cover. A surplus of the flap (n = 2) required flap thinning and scar corrections were performed in 2 patients. Mean grip strength was 25% (range 33.3-96.4%) compared to the contralateral side and mean patient-reported satisfaction 1.4 (range 1-3) (1 = excellent; 4 = poor). CONCLUSIONS: Gracilis muscle flaps showed a survival rate of 94%. Patients showed good clinical outcomes with acceptable wrist movements and grip strength as well as high reported satisfaction rates. Compared to fasciocutaneous free flaps, pliability and thinness especially on the palmar aspect of the hand are advantageous. Hence, covering large defects of the hand with a gracilis muscle flap can be a very satisfactory procedure. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV observational.

Malus baccata (L.) var. gracilis (Rehd.) has high ornamental value and breeding significance, and comparative chloroplast genome analysis was applied to facilitate genetic breeding for desired traits and resistance and provide insight into the phylogeny of this genus. Using data from whole-genome sequencing, a tetrameric chloroplast genome with a length of 159,992 bp and a total GC content of 36.56% was constructed. The M. baccata var. gracilis chloroplast genome consists of a large single-copy sequence (88,100 bp), a short single-copy region (19,186 bp), and two inverted repeat regions, IRa (26,353 bp) and IRb (26,353 bp). This chloroplast genome contains 112 annotated genes, including 79 protein-coding genes (nine multicopy), 29 tRNA genes (eight multicopy), and four rRNA genes (all multicopy). Calculating the relative synonymous codon usage revealed a total of 32 high-frequency codons, and the codons exhibited a biased usage pattern towards A/U as the ending nucleotide. Interspecific sequence comparison and boundary analysis revealed significant sequence variation in the vast single-copy region, as well as generally similar expansion and contraction of the SSC and IR regions for 10 analyzed Malus species. M. baccata var. gracilis and Malus hupehensis were grouped together into one branch based on phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast genome sequences. The chloroplast genome of Malus species provides an important foundation for species identification, genetic diversity analysis, and Malus chloroplast genetic engineering. Additionally, the results can facilitate the use of pendant traits to improve apple tree shape.

Liquid byproducts and organic wastes generated from dairy processing units contribute as the largest source of industrial food wastewater. Though bacteria-mediated treatment strategies are largely implemented, a more effective and innovative management system is needed of the hour. Thus, the current study involves the cultivation of centric diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis, and Thalassiosira weissflogii in simulated dairy wastewater (SDWW) formulated using varying amounts of milk powder with artificial seawater f/2 media (ASW). The results revealed that cell density and biomass productivity were highest in the 2.5% SDWW treatment cultures of both the strains, the maximum being in C. gracilis (7.5 × 106 cells mL - 1; 21.1 mg L-1 day-1). Conversely, the total carotenoid, chrysolaminarin, and phenol content were negatively impacted by SDWW. However, a considerable enhancement in the total lipid content was reported in the 2.5% SDWW culture of both species. Furthermore, the fatty acid profiling revealed that though the total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content was highest in the control setups, the total mono polyunsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content was higher in the 5% SDWW setups (30.66% in C. gracilis and 33.21% in T. weissflogii). In addition to it, in the cultures utilizing energy from external carbon sources provided by SDWW, the biodiesel produced was also enhanced owing to the heightened cetane number. Thus, the current study evidently highlights the organic carbon acquisition potential of marine diatoms with the scope of providing sustainable biorefinery.
