Aquatic ecosystems are among the most affected by anthropogenic impacts, and the rapid detection and measurement of these impacts are of great importance for the maintenance of such environments. The order of aquatic insects Odonata has emerged as an important bioindicator of environmental quality due to its sensitivity to environmental changes and its ecophysiological requirements, which make them closely associated with habitat conditions. The aim of this study was to test whether the Zygoptera/Anisoptera ratio can be used as an effective tool to assess anthropogenic changes in Cerrado streams. Our hypothesis is that the proportion of Zygoptera/Anisoptera is an efficient tool for measuring environmental alterations in Cerrado streams, with a positive relationship between habitat integrity and the proportion of Zygoptera and an inverse relationship with the proportion of Anisoptera. Adults were collected in 44 streams of the Cerrado Biome in the eastern Maranhão state. The Habitat Integrity Index (HII) was used to verify the environmental gradient. Our hypothesis was corroborated, with a positive relationship between the richness and abundance of Zygoptera and HII, while an inverse relationship was observed for Anisoptera. According to our results, streams exhibiting a Zygoptera abundance of 68% or higher and richness of 58% or higher can be classified as preserved, while those showing an Anisoptera abundance and richness surpassing 31% and 41%, respectively, may be deemed altered. The patterns detected in the Cerrado were similar to those found in studies of the Amazon Biome and the Atlantic Forest, confirming the effectiveness of this method even for naturally open environments, such as the Cerrado. We conclude, therefore, that this method can be used as a tool to generate rapid results in monitoring studies, with low cost and easy application, enabling the development of mitigation, control, and conservation measures for extremely threatened environments such as those found in the Cerrado Biome.

Aquatic ecosystems are affected by different land uses that modify gradients of environmental conditions. These impacts act directly on the community structure, especially the most sensitive ones, such as aquatic insects. Thus, dragonflies have been used as good models to assess these changes, since their suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera have different ecophysiological and behavioral requirements. This study aimed to evaluate the following hypotheses: (1) dragonfly species composition differs along the environmental gradients of streams; therefore, we expect a higher proportion of species of the suborder Anisoptera in environments with a higher degree of disturbance, since these environmental conditions select heliothermic species with exophytic oviposition; (2) the reduction of habitat integrity and canopy cover will lead to a lower richness of the Zygoptera suborder, due to the restrictions of its thermoregulation and oviposition behavior in relation to Anisoptera, since the higher light input would favor heliothermic and exophytic species; (3) alterations in habitat integrity create ecological thresholds and points of change in the abundance and frequency of Odonata species, generating gradients in the environmental integrity conditions. Specimens were collected from 24 streams (first to third order), in a gradient of land uses. Canopy cover and stream width were predictors of taxonomic richness and abundance of the suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera, with greater coverage and smaller width, positively affecting Zygoptera and negatively Anisoptera. The turning points were determined by a habitat integrity index, where below 0.38 there is an increase in generalist taxa and a decline in sensitive taxa. On the other hand, above 0.79, there was a sensitive taxa increase in detriment of generalists. Four individual taxa indicators were selected, two of which associated with a negative response (Perithemis tenera and Acanthagrion aepiolum) and two with positive responses (Epipleoneura metallica and Zenithoptera lanei) for habitat integrity. Our results are important to guide management strategies, recovery, and protection policies for areas of permanent protection, aiming to conserving biodiversity and natural resources essential to life quality maintenance.

Human activities have impacted many environments on earth, and thus several species are facing an increased risk of extinction. The environmental crisis requires rapid tools to assess the ecosystem health accurately. Studies have been conducted with visual indices that quantify habitat integrity by predicting species richness and diversity. However, whether a diverse clade can predict habitat integrity has not been used. The genus Argia (Rambur, 1842) is one of the most locally diverse groups in southeastern Mexico. In this context, we hypothesized that the occurrence, species richness, and diversity of adults Argia spp. could be a better predictor of the Visual-Based Habitat Assessment Score (VBHAS) than the other taxonomic levels or less diverse clades. We found that the richness and diversity of Argia spp. are positively correlated with VBHA scores, as same as taxonomic ratios. Simultaneously, VBHA scores increase to 23.51 times when Argia spp. diversity increases. We discuss the possible use of a diverse Odonata clade, as Argia spp. could surrogate habitat integrity for local long-term biomonitoring programs. This approach requires testing with other indices and verifying a reliable and consistent relationship between diverse clades and environmental assessment scores.

The presence or absence of a fish species may be associated with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, in addition to the state of preservation of the riparian zone. This study examined whether the taxonomic fish composition in an urban river varies along three riparian zone preservation conditions: preserved, intermediate preservation and degraded. Six urban stretches of the Sorocaba/São Paulo River were selected for this study, with monthly sampling being carried out from June 2019 to February 2020. The samplings were carried out with the aid of a sieve, dip net, and trawl. Regarding the types of margins and environmental variables, the Principal Component Analysis explained 97.49% of the data variation, axis 1, which explained 91.85% of the total variation, was formed by the variables conductivity and total dissolved solids. Axis 2, which explained 5.64% of the variation, was formed by Sun Rays% and Siltation%, being inversely proportional to Riparian Forest%. For the ichthyofauna, the samples consisted in 50,983 fish distributed in 5 orders, 8 families, and 12 species. Cyprinodontiformes had the highest abundance, with 96.96% of the total number of individuals, followed by Siluriformes (2.39%), and the sum of the other orders did not reach 1% of the total collected. According to each type of margin, it was possible to register 11,592 individuals for the Margin A preserved, with S=8 species, being 2 exclusive (Corydoras flaveolus and Hoplosternum littorale) and 3 exotic (Coptodon rendalli, Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii, and Poecilia reticulata), the latter was dominant in all types of margins. For Margin B intermediate preservation, 19,645 individuals were sampled, with S=5 species, no exclusive species, only exotic and more tolerant native species such as Hoplias malabaricus and Hypostomus ancistroides. For Margin C degraded, 19,746 individuals were recorded, the largest number of species (S=10), 3 were exclusive to this type of mar-gin (Psalidodon fasciatus, Rhamdia Quelen, and Geophagus brasiliensis). The pairwise comparison (similarity percentage) showed that the assemblage structure was different for the types of margins. The Canonical Cor-respondence Analysis explained 92.46% of the total data variation, showing the relationship of species to envi-ronmental data. It is evident the importance of preservation of micro-habitats still present in the locals sampled, since different anthropic pressures cause great loss of diversity, especially for native and more sensitive species.
A presença ou ausência de uma espécie de peixe que vive em rios urbanos pode estar associada às características físicas e químicas da água, além do estado de preservação da zona ripária. O presente estudo verificou se a composição taxonômica de peixes de um rio urbano varia em três condições de preservação da zona ripária: preservada, preservação intermediária e degradada. Seis trechos urbanos do rio Sorocaba, localizado no estado de São Paulo, foram selecionados para este estudo, com coletas mensais de junho de 2019 a fevereiro de 2020 com auxílio de peneira, puçá e rede de arrasto. Com relação aos tipos de margens e às variáveis ambientais, a análise de componentes principais explicou 97,49% da variação dos dados. O eixo 1, que explicou 91,85% da variação total, foi formado pelas variáveis condutividade e total de sólidos dissolvidos. O eixo 2, que explicou 5,64% da variação, foi formado pelo percentual das variáveis raios solares e assoreamento, revelando-se inversamente proporcional ao de mata ripária. Para a ictiofauna, foram amostrados 50.983 indivíduos compreendidos em cinco ordens, oito famílias e 12 espécies. Cyprinodontiformes apresentou maior abundância, com 96,96% do total de indivíduos, seguida de siluriformes (2,39%); a soma das demais ordens não atingiu 1% do total coletado. De acordo com cada tipo de margem, foi possível registrar 11.592 indivíduos para a margem A preservada, com a s=8 espécies, das quais duas foram exclusivas (C. flaveolus e H. littorale) e três exóticas (C. rendalli, P. ambrosettii e P. reticulata), sendo esta última dominante em todos os tipos de margens. Para a margem B intermediária, foram amostrados 19.645 indivíduos, com S=5 espécies, dos quais nenhum representante de espécie exclusiva, apenas espécies exóticas e nativas mais tolerantes, como H. malabaricus e H. ancistroides. Já para margem C degradada, foram registrados 19.746 exemplares, maior número de espécies (s=10), três delas exclusivas desse tipo de margem (P. fasciatus, R. quelen e G. brasiliensis). A comparação par a par (porcentagem similar) mostrou que a estrutura da assembleia se apresentou distinta para os tipos de margens. A análise de correspondência canônica explicou 92,46% da variação total dos dados, evidenciando a relação das espécies com os dados ambientais. Torna-se evidente a importância da preservação dos micro-habitatsainda presentes nas margens amostradas, visto que diferentes pressões antrópicas causam grande perda de diversidade, sobretudo para espécies nativas e espécies mais sensíveis a essas alterações.

Human activities have long been altering the natural conditions of streams, including the quality of their water, throughout most of Brazil. This problem is even worse in regions with low rainfall levels, such as the Brazilian Northeast, where water quality needs to be monitored more carefully. In this context, the present study investigated the effects of environmental integrity on the physicochemical characteristics of the streams of the basin of the Itapecuru River in northeastern Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that streams with lower habitat integrity would have higher conductivity, pH, and temperature, due to the reduced input of allochthonous organic matter and the greater washout of sediments to the stream bed. A total of 15 streams, of a sedimentary basin, were evaluated in the municipality of Caxias, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, between June 2015, and July 2016; each stream was sampled once a month during the drought period in the region, where physicochemical measurements were taken to determine the environmental integrity of the stream through the application of a habitat integrity index. Streams with greater habitat integrity had lower conductivity, pH, and temperature and had higher discharge rates. The index proved to be not an effective tool for the evaluation of water quality, but was found to be important for the management of hydrographic basins by indicating important changes in environmental variables. In this case, the index can be used primarily for the management of hydrographic basins, given that it can be applied straightforwardly, it can be interpreted easily by decision-makers, and it can quantify alterations to the structure of the system with precision.

Selective logging has become a major source of threats to tropical forest, bringing challenges for both ecologists and managers to develop low-impact forestry. Reduced-impact logging (RIL) is a prominent activity accounting for such forestry practices to prevent strong forest disturbances. Our aims were to evaluate the effects of RIL on insect communities of forested streams from Eastern Amazon and to test the hypothesis of negative effects of RIL on species richness, abundance, and functional feeding groups of aquatic insect assemblages. Neither of the evaluated metrics of the studied assemblages were negatively affected by RIL. Environmental metrics, such as substrate heterogeneity, woody canopy cover, and hill slope height, varied more among RIL streams than in reference streams, indicating a gradient according to logging impacts, and are suitable candidates to monitor RIL impacts in Amazonian streams. In addition, the PHI index also varied among REF and RIL, according to age class and year of logging, which could reflect trends to recover the forest structure after logging in a time frame of only 10 years. We conclude that RIL impacts have not had detrimental impacts on insect communities, but have changed little of the environmental conditions, especially of the riparian vegetation around streams.

Se presenta una propuesta metodológica para estimar los caudales ambientales en grandes proyectos licenciados por la Agencia Nacional de Licencias Ambientales (ANLA) de Colombia, resultado de un convenio interadministrativo suscrito entre el ahora Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible (MADS) de Colombia y la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá(UNC). El método propuesto parte de garantizar criterios hidrológicos, continúa con una validación hidráulica y de calidad del agua, sigue con la determinación de la integridad del hábitat, en un proceso iterativo que requiere evaluación para las condiciones antes y después de la construcción del proyecto y que permite establecer un caudal que, además de conservar las funciones ecológicas del río, garantiza los usos del recurso aguas abajo. Específicamente dentro del componente biótico, la propuesta incluye la determinación y monitoreo de índices de integridad biótica para cuatro comunidades acuáticas (perifiton, macroinvertebrados, vegetación ribereña y peces), a fin de hacer un seguimiento a los efectos que puede producir la reducción del caudal a mediano y largo plazo. Se presentan los resultados de la aplicación de la metodología en varios proyectos licenciados por el MADS.
A methodological proposal for estimating environmental flows in large projects approved by Agencia Nacional de Licencias Ambientales (ANLA) in Colombian rivers was developed. The project is the result of an agreement between the MADS and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá(UNC). The proposed method begins with an evaluation of hydrological criteria, continues with a hydraulic and water quality validation, and follows with the determination of habitat integrity. This is an iterative process that compares conditions before and after the project construction and allows to obtain the magnitude of a monthly flow that, besides preserving the ecological functions of the river, guarantees the water uses downstream. Regarding to the biotic component, the proposal includes the establishment and monitoring of biotic integrity indices for four aquatic communities (periphyton, macroinvertebrates, riparian vegetation, and fish). The effects that flow reduction may produce in the medium and long term can be assessed by these indices. We present the results of applying the methodology to several projects licensed by the MADS.

The effect of different stream environmental preservation levels, in 1st to 4th orders, over the richness, abundance, similarity in the composition and the potential of Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) species as bioindicators were investigated in a Cerrado region located in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A total of twenty species/morphospecies were catalogued from the 1752 samples of nymphs, resulting in a new record for two species in Brazil. Values of Habitat Integrity Index (HII) were categorized among damaged, modified, and preserved environments. Species richness was different between sites, being greater in disturbed habitats. Total abundance was higher among preserved and altered environments, and differed significantly from the degraded areas. The NMDS analysis indicates that, in preserved and modified sites, the similarity in the composition of species differs from degraded areas. Four species showed a positive relationship with increasing values of HII. Baetidae showed environmental indicator species with different levels of preservation, with Zelusia principalis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998 and Baetodes sp. being indicators of preserved environments and Aturbina nigra Salles, Boldrini & Shimano, 2011, Callibaetis sp. 2, Camelobaetidius aff. janae, Paracloeodes binodulus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996 and Waltzoyphius roberti Thomas & Peru, 2002 as indicators of modified environments. The knowledge on the ecology of species advances in terms of providing subsidies for the biomonitoring of basins and the use of indicator species.
O efeito dos diferentes níveis de preservação ambiental de córregos de 1ª a 4ª ordens sobre a riqueza, abundância, similaridade na composição de Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) e o potencial das espécies como bioindicadoras foram investigados em uma região de cerrado matogrossense. Um total de vinte espécies/morfoespécies foi catalogado dentre as 1752 ninfas amostradas, sendo reportado dois novos registros de espécies para o país. Os valores do Índice de Integridade de Hábitat (HII) obtidos foram categorizados para ambientes degradados, alterados e conservados. A riqueza de espécies foi diferente entre os locais, sendo maior em ambientes alterados. We assessed the effects of physical habitat structure on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in 3 reservoirs: Serra Azul (SA), Vargem das Flores (VF) and Ibirité (IB). We sampled physical and chemical habitat and benthic macroinvertebrates at 30 systematic sites in each reservoir. In SA, the dominant taxa out of 12 were Melanoides tuberculatus Müller, 1774 (15.2%) and Chaoboridae (63.8%). In VF, the dominant taxa, out of 11 were M. tuberculatus (34.2%) and Oligochaeta (33.6%). In IB, M. tuberculatus (91.2%) and Chaoboridae (6.27%) dominated and we collected only 7 taxa. In SA, benthos were significantly influenced by the deciduous shrub understory and bank angle. In IB and VF, the significant physical habitat variables were: land cover, human influence, and aquatic macrophytes. We conclude that human disturbances reduced terrestrial vegetation cover and riparian and littoral physical habitat structural complexity, leading to worse water quality. Those changes, in turn, reduced the taxonomic richness of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities.
Foram avaliados os efeitos da estrutura física de habitats em comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentônicos em três reservatórios: Serra Azul (SA), Vargem das Flores (FV) e Ibirité (IB). Mensurações de variáveis físicas e químicas e comunidade bentônica foram realizadas em 30 estações de amostragem em cada reservatório. Em SA, foram coletados 12 táxons com predomínio de Melanoides tuberculatus Müller, 1774 (15,2%) e Chaoboridae (63,8%). Em VF foram coletados 11 táxons sendo M. tuberculatus (34,2%) e Oligochaeta (33,6%) os dominantes. Em IB foram coletados 7 táxons com domínio de M. tuberculatus (91,2%) e Chaoboridae (6,27%). Em Serra Azul foi observada influência significativa do sub-bosque arbustivo e do ângulo de inclinação do barranco. Nos reservatórios de Ibirité e Vargem das Flores as variáveis significativas foram cobertura do solo, influência humana e macrófitas aquáticas. Concluímos que as ações humanas reduzem a cobertura da vegetação terrestre e a complexidade de habitats físicos na região litorâneos dos reservatórios, levando a uma redução na qualidade de água. Essas mudanças, por sua vez, reduzem a riqueza taxonômica dos macroinvertebrados bentônicos.
