We aimed to develop an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to evaluate the presence of specific IgG against Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati somatic antigens on the serum of patients with toxocariasis. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for indirect-ELISA were calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis and Youden's J using Likelihood ratio. All statistics were analysed and graphs are plotted using GraphPad Prism version 8.4.3 (Graph Pad Software, La Jolla, CA, USA), with 95% confidence interval (CI). The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for T. canis were 100%, 82%, 79% and 100%, respectively. The mentioned variables for T. cati were 97%, 82%, 78% and 98%, respectively. Five immune reactive bands of 38, 40, 72, 100 and 250 kDa were common in both species. Toxocara crude antigens were highly immunogenic in human sera. Immunoreactive bands against T. canis compared to T. cati somatic antigen were about two times more. Unlike Toxocara excretory-secretory antigen, that was homologue in two species, somatic antigens of T. canis and T. cati showed different immunoreactive bands in our western blot.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthic (STH) infections are the leading cause of stunting among children. To lessen the burden, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended a periodic deworming program through the use of single-dose therapy in the endemic regions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to synthesize evidence about the efficacy of anthelminthic drugs against STH infections among preschool and school-age children. METHODS: The Preferred Reposting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria were followed in this study. Relevant electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, DOAJ, Science Direct, the WHO Clinical Trials.gov library, Google Scholar, and AJOL databases, were searched for relevant publications. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized interventional studies focused on the efficacy of albendazole and mebendazole against STHs in children were included in the study. Review Manager was used to analyze the data. A random effects model was used to obtain the pooled estimated efficacy. To evaluate heterogeneity, the I2 test and Cochrane Q (χ2) were employed. The risk of publication bias was investigated using Egger's test and the funnel plot. The protocol of this review was registered at the PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews (CRD42023401196). RESULTS: Of the 69 publications selected for the systematic review, 66 with complete data were included in the meta-analysis. Single doses of albendazole and mebendazole have shown satisfactory efficacy [egg reduction rate (ERR)] against Ascaris lumbricoides [95.54% (95% CI: 88.75-102.34%) and 98.69% (95% CI: 97.68-99.65%), respectively. The effectiveness of these two drugs against Trichuris trichiura and hookworms was comparatively low (< 80% ERR), except for albendazole, which showed high ERRs [93.44% (95%CI: 92.39-94.49%)] against hookworms. The cure rate (CR) of albendazole against T. trichiura, A. lumbricoides, and hookworms were 50.8%, 91.3%, and 78.32%, respectively. Likewise, mebendazole showed CRs of 48.15%, 92.8%, and 49.32% against T. trichiura, A. lumbricoides, and hookworms, respectively. Subgroups such as studies conducted after 2000, diagnostic type (McMaster), and longer follow-up weeks significantly reduced the efficacy of the two drugs against T. trichura. While the combination of albendazole or mebendazole with other drugs and RCT showed significantly improved efficacy against T. trichura. The count of eggs per gram of stool (EPG) was identified as one of the variables that negatively and significantly influenced the efficacy of albendazole or mebendazole against A. lumbricoides. CONCLUSION: Despite the wide range of ERRs and CR reported in the different articles included in this review, the pooled estimated efficacy of albendazole and mebendazole against STHs falls in the satisfactory category of WHO recommendations. Further evaluation of the combination of anthelminthic drugs as a preventive chemotherapy option and routine drug efficacy testing are necessary to prevent the emergence and widespread use of drug-resistant STHs.

Wild boars have a worldwide distribution and also have major economic, veterinary, and medical importance. Due to a small amount of data on the parasitic fauna of wild boars in the Russian Far East, especially in Prymorye territory, a post-mortem parasitic examination of 20 wild boars was provided. The general prevalence was 25%, and a total of six helminth species, including one larva stage, were found. The most prevalent helminth species were Gnathostoma doloresi (25%) and Metastrongylus elongatus (20%). Followed by Trichuris suis and Ascaris suum (15%). The lowest prevalence was registered for Cysticercus tenuicollis (the larvae stage of T. hydatigena). Parasites were found in each region, with the highest prevalence registered in the Chuguevskii region. Totally 100% of adult boars were positive for helminth infections, instead of 60% of young specimens. Some helminthes found (G. doloresi, T. suis, A. suum) have zoonotic potential and can be involved in the circulation of human parasitic diseases, especially in rural areas. Further research work on parasitic infections in wild boars in Prymorye is necessary due to the high prevalence of helminthes in wild boars.

Background: Intestinal parasites are responsible for a significant amount of disease and mortality around the world. In developing nations, intestinal parasites are a severe public health issue. Intestinal parasite infections are one of the most common illnesses in the world. They're frequently linked to poor personal and environmental cleanliness, as well as low-quality drinking water. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites and their shifting trends during a five-year period at Mizan-Tepi University of Teaching Hospital (MTUTH). Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective survey using the past five years' (2017 to 2021) clinical records obtained from MTUTH Mizan-Aman town Southern west Ethiopia. Patients with complete age, sex, and stool parasite examination (direct wet mount or concentration techniques) records on the parasitology registration book were included. Data were entered and analysed using a Microsoft Excel sheet. The parasite prevalence was calculated using frequency and percentages. Results: Overall, 17,030 patient records of the past five years were reviewed from the registration books of parasitology laboratory departments at MTUTH and only 546 records were taken for this study. Of these 336 (61.50%) were female and the rest 210 (38.50%) were males. One hundred eighty-two (182) 33.33% of patients had one or more intestinal parasites over five years from 2017 to 2021. From total of 546 patients' records 17.77% in 2017, 18.89% in 2018, 23.44% in 2019, 19.96% in 2020 and 19.96% in 2021 had complete information. Conclusion: Intestinal parasite prevalence was high among patients who visited the Mizan-Tepi University of Teaching Hospital during the five-year period. Helminthes and protozoan parasites prevalence was higher in the 15-45 years age category. In order to avoid intestinal parasite-related disease, strategies other than mass drug administration are required.

Data on human gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) infections in the african sub-regions and countries are mainly lacking in terms of prevalence and population stratification by afflicted age group, symptomatology, multi-parasitism, and diagnostic methods. This study aims to describe the GIP reported in african countries and discuss the extent of the burden in the african context. Only 68.42% (39/57) of african countries reported human cases of GIP with helminths (45%, CI: 40-50%, I2: 99.79%) as the predominant parasitic group infecting the african population. On a regional scale, Central Africa had the highest pooled prevalence for GIP (43%, CI: 32-54%, I2: 99.74%), while the Central African Republic led all countries with a pooled prevalence of 90% (CI: 89-92%, I2: 99.96%). The vulnerable population (patients who are minorities, children, old, poor, underfunded, or have particular medical conditions) was the most affected (50%, CI: 37-62%, I2: 99.33%), with the predominance of GIP in the 6 to <20 years age group (48%, CI: 43-54%, I2: 99.68%). Reports on multi-parasitism (44%, CI: 40-48%, I2: 99.73%) were almost double the reports of single infections (43%, CI: 27-59%, I2: 99.77%) with combined molecular and non-molecular techniques demonstrating the best performance for GIP identification. The current review spans more than 40 years of GIP reports from the african continent. Geographical characteristics, environmental factors, habits of its inhabitants, and their health status play a crucial role in GIP modulation and behaviour in its captive hosts. Strategies for regular and enhanced surveillance, policy formation, and high-level community awareness are necessary to identify the true incidence in Africa and the transmission of the pathogens via water and food.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst (HC) is the larval stage of the canine intestinal tapeworm (cestode), Echinococcus granulosus. In addition to the high global economic cost of livestock farming, the infection can lead to dangerous problems for human health. Therefore, research into new diagnosis and treatment approaches is valuable. This study is set out to explore aptamers that bind to HC antigens. METHODS: The similarity between HC genotype in sheep and humans was that sheep HCs were collected and used as a biological membrane for aptamer selection. Four Bio- Membrane SELEX rounds were conducted, and ssDNA aptamers were selected. Selected aptamers' affinity and specificity to the laminated layer antigens were evaluated using membrane staining by fluorescein primer as a probe. Biotinylated primer was used as a probe for aptahistochemistry and dot blot techniques. Subsequently, cloning and plasmid extraction was conducted. The affinity and specificity of sequenced aptamers were examined with the dot blot method. RESULTS: Selected aptamers reacted with HC wall in aptahistochemistry, aptahistofluorescent, and dot blot experiments. Following cloning and sequencing, 20 sequences were achieved. A strong reaction between HC total antigens and sequenced aptamers has emerged in the dot blot method. CONCLUSION: We propose a novel method to determine specific aptamers in this investigation. Bio-Membrane SELEX could be assumed as a practical and sensitive method for aptamer selection. Selected aptamers in this study possibly may be used for specific HC antigens detection.

In Vietnam, helminthioses remain a major threat to public health and contribute to the maintenance of poverty in highly endemic regions. Through increased awareness of the damaging effects caused by helminthioses, the Vietnamese government has implemented many national programs over the past 30 years for the prevention and control of the most important helminthioses, such as, lymphatic filariasis, soil transmitted helminths, food borne zoonotic helminths, and others. Various control strategies have been applied to reduce or eliminate these worms, e.g. mass drug administration, economic development, control of vectors or intermediate hosts, public health interventions through education, proper composting procedures for excreta potentially containing helminth eggs, and the expansion of food supply chains and improved technologies for the production and inspection of food products. These control measures have resulted in a significant reduction in the distribution and transmission of helminth infections and have improved the overall living conditions and health outcomes of the Vietnamese citizens. However, the persistence of several helminth diseases continues in some endemic areas, especially where poverty is widespread and local traditions include the consumption of raw foods, especially fish and meats. This manuscript provides an overview of the helminth infection prevention and control programs conducted in Vietnam, their achieved results, learned lessons, and future works.

Using microscopy and/or immunodiagnosis, the authors analyzed 284 fecal samples from the Brazilian rock cavy, Kerodon rupestris, that were collected between 1984 and 2015 in Serra da Capivara National Park for the presence of helminths and protozoa. Fourteen morphospecies of helminth eggs of the following taxa were found: Trematoda, Nematoda, Strongylidae, Lagochilascaris sp., Strongylida, Trichuris (2 species), Oxyuridae (3 species), Ancylostomatidae (2 species), and Ascarididae (2 species), along with 3 protozoan taxa: Coccidia, Cryptosporidium sp., and Balantidium sp. During the last 30 yr, the population of K. rupestris has increased in the region as a consequence of the creation and management of the National Park, and data from this study show a concurrent increase in the diversity of intestinal parasites in this host, including new reports. Some of these species have zoonotic potential, which suggests that K. rupestris may be in contact with domestic farm animals and/or human feces. These results show the importance of integrating different diagnostic approaches for the identification of protozoa in the region and indicate that further methods need to be employed to increase recovery. This work highlights the usefulness of parasite studies in assessing the health of ecosystems, especially in protected areas, which should be considered by park managers and health agencies.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) are the major public health problem in the world especially in school age children. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the burden of soil transmitted helminths and Schistosoma mansoni among Ambesame primary school children, North-West Ethiopia. METHOD: A cross sectional study was carried out at Ambasame primary school children from March to May, 2019. Study participants were selected using systematic random sampling technique. Socio-demographic characteristics and other factors were collected using structured questionnaire. Moreover, stool samples were examined microscopically using wet mount and formol ether concentration techniques. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Logistic regression analysis was done to investigate the association between dependent and independent variables. P-value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULT: The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 117(31.2%). The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthes and S.mansoni was 110 (29.3%) using formol ether concentration technique. The most predominant parasite was S. mansoni (10.7%), followed by hookworm (5.6%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that, helminthic infection was associated with children less than 7 years of age (P-value = 0.019, AOR = 3.29, 95% CI (1.21-8.91)); fathers who are able to read and write (P-value< 0.001, AOR = 5.4, 95% CI (2.37-12.33)); absence of latrine (P-value = 0.016, AOR = 12.96, 95% CI (1.60-104.87)) and untrimmed nail (P-value = 0.043, AOR = 2.09, 95% CI (1.02-4.27)). CONCLUSION: This study revealed that the prevalence of intestinal helminthes among Ambasame primary school children was relatively high. The lower educational status of father, absence of latrine and untrimmed finger nail showed statistically significant association with intestinal helminthic infection. This indicates the school community, health offices and other stakeholders should plan a strategy to tackle problems associated with sanitary condition. Furthermore, Health policy makers, healthcare workers and health extension workers should enhance their effort of awareness creation for school children, parents, school community about personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, intestinal parasites transmission, prevention and control. Moreover, mass deworming of school children and periodic screening for parasitic infection should be done.

Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with a change in bowel habits. Gut inflammation might be one of the mechanisms of pathogenesis. However, the cause of IBS is not clearly understood. Post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS) is the onset of IBS after an episode of infectious gastroenteritis. While the exact pathophysiology of PI-IBS is not established, the mechanism might be an altered serotonin signaling activity, inflammation, malabsorption, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Various parasites such as Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis have a possible role in the etiology of IBS. E ntamoeba histolytica is one of the predominant GI parasites in developing regions of the world, and the symptoms of non-dysenteric amebic colitis may mimic those of IBS, which makes them difficult to distinguish from each other. Our study will address the relationship between the different gastrointestinal protozoan parasites in IBS and the role of antiparasitic therapy in PI-IBS. This study also aimed to determine the prevalence of GI protozoan parasites in patients with IBS in a tribal region of India. Methods We conducted a descriptive facility-based cross-sectional study of patients presenting with IBS to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput, Odisha, from 2017 to 2021. We collected stool samples for histopathological analysis using direct wet mount and formal-ether concentration microscopy techniques if diarrhea persisted beyond the antidiarrheal therapy. The samples from IBS patients were compared against 80 healthy control patient stool samples. We used IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY,) to analyze the data. Results Our study included 120 patients with IBS, of whom 67 (56%) were infected with GI parasites. In the control group, 16 (20%) were infected with GI parasites, which was significantly fewer than the test group (p<0.001). Conclusion We found a widespread infestation with GI parasites in patients with diarrhea-predominate IBS. A parasitological stool test should be included in the diagnostic approach to IBS. Initiating early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the chance of post-infectious IBS.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths constitutes the commonest of human parasitic infections worldwide. Millions of pregnant women who consume geophagic substances across the globe are predisposed to adverse maternal and prenatal outcomes including risk of helminthic infections. The association between type of geophagic substances consumed and helminthic infections among pregnant women in Kisii County is not documented. OBJECTIVE: This study endeavoured to determine the association between geophagic substances and helminth infections among pregnant women in Kisii County, Kenya. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study, where 183 pregnant women were recruited by purposive sampling. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the socio-demographic characteristics and the geophagic substances consumed. Their stool samples were examined microscopically by direct saline method and further confirmed using Formal-ether concentration technique to identify intestinal helminths species. RESULTS: Simple logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) was used to analyze data. Results showed that there was a significant association between geophagy practice and contraction of helminthic infections (p=0.015). Notably, there was a significant positive association between ant hill soil consumption and contraction of helminth infections (OR=2.67, p=0.050). CONCLUSION: Consumption of anthill soil by pregnant women has significant association with contraction of helminthic infections. Public health awareness on the increased risk of contracting helminthic infections due to anti hill soil consumption by pregnant women is recommended.


CONTEXTE: Les helminthes transmis par le sol constituent la plus courante des infections parasitaires humaines dans le monde. Des millions de femmes enceintes qui consomment des substances géophagiques dans le monde sont prédisposées à des résultats maternels et prénataux défavorables, y compris le risque d'infections helminthiques. L'association entre le type de substances géophagiques consommées et les infections helminthiques chez les femmes enceintes du comté de Kisii n'est pas documentée. OBJECTIF: Cette étude visait à déterminer l'association entre les substances géophagiques et les infections helminthiques chez les femmes enceintes du comté de Kisii, au Kenya. MÉTHODES: Il s'agit d'une étude descriptive transversale, dans laquelle 183 femmes enceintes ont été recrutées par échantillonnage raisonné. Un questionnaire semi-structuré a été utilisé pour recueillir des données sur les caractéristiques socio-démographiques et les substances géophagiques consommées. Leurs échantillons de selles ont été examinés au microscope par la méthode saline directe et confirmés par la technique de concentration de Formal-ether pour identifier les espèces d'helminthes intestinaux. RÉSULTATS: La régression logistique simple et l'odds ratio (OR) ont été utilisés pour analyser les données. Les résultats ont montré qu'il existait une association significative entre la pratique de la géophagie et la contraction d'infections helminthiques (p=0,015). Notamment, il y avait une association positive significative entre la consommation de terre de fourmilière et la contraction d'infections helminthiques (OR=2,67, p=0,050). CONCLUSION: La consommation de terre de fourmilière par les femmes enceintes a une association significative avec la contraction d'infections helminthiques. La sensibilisation de la santé publique sur le risque accru de contracter des infections helminthiques en raison de la consommation de terre de fourmilière par les femmes enceintes est recommandée. Intestinal helminthes of dogs have a relevant role for health and welfare of canine populations and many of them are zoonotic. Thus, a constant surveillance is pivotal to safeguard companion dogs and human health. Data from faecal examinations of pet dogs obtained in the last six years during the routine activity of the laboratory of Parasitology and Parasitic diseases of the University Teaching Veterinary Hospital of the University of Teramo, Italy, are here reported. From 2015 to 2020 a total of 1083 individual faecal samples from privately owned dogs were examined using conventional copro-microscopic techniques. Endoparasite elements were found in 278 (25.7%) dogs, and among them, eggs of intestinal zoonotic helminthes were detected in 184 (17%) samples. The most common zoonotic parasites were Toxocara canis and hookworms (8.9% positivity rate for both). Most dogs (88%) were positive for a single zoonotic parasite while 12% of the positive animals harbored two or more zoonotic helminthes. A statistical analysis showed a significant association between dogs with less than one year of age and positivity to at least one intestinal zoonotic helminth, and that infections by T. canis are significantly more prevalent in dogs under one year of age. Despite being well known in canine clinical practice, these results indicate that zoonotic helminthes are still frequent in owned dogs. Thus, increased awareness of veterinary practitioners and pet owners is necessary to implement current diagnostic and control strategies to minimize the risk of zoonotic transmission of intestinal helminthes.

Most parasitologists face a conundrum throughout their careers: 'which parasite eggs are more resistant to environmental stress, Ascaris spp. or Trichuris spp.?' In this analysis, our experimental and statistical analyses demonstrated that Trichuris sp. is more resistant than Ascaris sp. We highlight that desiccation exerts a major effect on the conservation of Ascaris eggs, and this may result in an underestimation of Ascaris eggs in paleoparasitological records. This observation can be extrapolated to more modern scenarios, for example, parasitological research in animal feces from semiarid environments, where whipworms are more common than roundworms. Similarly, this could be a plausible explanation for the higher frequency and abundance of whipworms than roundworms, when other hypotheses are unsupported.

This research was conducted from April to October, 2017 to assess the parasitic contamination of vegetables sold at main vegetable markets in districts Lower Dir and Peshawar, Pakistan. Eight hundred specimens of different vegetables were purchased and soaked in physiological saline solution, shaken with a mechanical shaker for 20 minutes and processed by sedimentation concentration method. Results revealed that only 19.7% (n=158/800) of the vegetables were found to be contaminated with single or multiple parasite species. Ascaris lumbricoides (the large round worm) 12.3% (n=99/800) was the most commonly detected pathogen and Taenia saginata (the beef tapeworm) 1.62% (n=13/800) was the least frequently detected one. Interestingly, significant p value (p>0.05 at 95%CI) between the number of examined and contaminated for all the variables studied including education status of the vendors, markets location, type of vegetables, means of display, washed before display, washing source of water and market type. The findings of this study evidenced that consumption of raw vegetables possesses great risk of getting parasitic infections in Lower Dir and Peshawar districts, Pakistan. Instructing the sellers and the public about parasitic disease transfer and their hygiene can reduce the infection rate of parasites of human origin.

RESUMO

The design and evaluation of control programs for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) is based on surveillance data recording measurements of egg counts in the stool of infected individuals, which underpin estimates of the prevalence and average intensity of infection. There is considerable uncertainty around these measurements and their interpretation. The uncertainty is composed of several sources of measurement error and the limit of detection of fecal smear tests on the one hand, and key assumptions on STH biology on the other hand, including assumptions on the aggregation of worms within hosts and on the impact of density-dependent influences on worm reproduction. Using 2 independently developed models of STH transmission we show how different aspects of STH biology and human behavior impact on STH surveillance and control programs and how accounting for uncertainty can help to develop optimal and sustainable control strategies to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) morbidity target for STHs.

Francolins are among the very gregarious variety of game birds severely infected by various parasites that may cause an important source for infection transmission in humans by eating them very fondly in the country. During this study, two commonly found francolins species of the region; Francolinus francolinus (Black Francolin) and F. pondicerianus (Grey Francolin), were examined for helminthes fauna. The study deals with the primary survey of helminthic infection occur in the francolin birds (Phasianidae: Perdicinae) with reference to their forage in gut content. It is the first helminthological and epidemiological study in Sindh, Pakistan. At present, a total of 20 birds were examined, out of which 17 were found infected with cestode larvae of two species of genus Cotugnia and genus Raillietina, one species of trematode, Prosthogonimus potentially new species; one new species of acanthocephalan, Mediorhynchus francolinae sp. nov.; one species of nematode, Subulura brumpti (López-Neyra, 1922) were recovered, with new host records. The forage content and comparative incidence of helminth species were also observed and discussed in the current study, which revealed the high prevalence of infection in grey francolins than that of black francolin. The mean intensity of infection relative to the forage in guts of hosts was found significant (P < 0.05), observed 9.14 ± 1.65 in black francolins than in grey francolins (5.8 ± 0.51). The parasitic abundance was compared using Fisher's Exact Test, which showed no significant difference between cestodes and nematodes in the two hosts, however trematode and acanthocephalan was found only in grey francolin. The parasitic frequencies along with the confidence intervals were recorded higher in black francolins by cestodes and nematodes than the black francolins during the present study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted parasites (STPs) are significant intestinal parasites that infect humans and animals and impose considerable burdens on human society and animal husbandry industries. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of parasitic elements of soil samples collected from the north of Iran. METHODS: A total of 256 soil samples were collected from public parks, public places, vegetable gardens, sand heaps, and shadow areas near houses in the north of Iran and examined using the sucrose flotation method. RESULTS: Out of 256 examined samples, 131 (51.2%) showed parasitic contamination, including larvae (43%), oocysts (14.1%), and different eggs (6.6%). According to the results, the most and least common parasites observed in the samples were larvae (43%), as well as Toxascaris leonina, and Trichuris trichiura (0.4%), respectively. Moreover, the most and least contaminated locations were sand heaps (62.5%) and shadow areas near houses (45.6%), respectively. Regarding cities, Behshahr (68.3%) and Sari (67.5%) had the highest contaminated soil samples, whereas Chalus (37.5%) showed the lowest contamination. On the other hand, rural samples showed more contamination compared to urban areas (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study indicate that the overall prevalence of STPs in examined areas and highly contaminated soil samples can be considered as a potential source of human contamination particularly tourists with STPs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of parasitic infections and to assess the relation between intestinal helminth infection and the anaemia status of pre-school children. METHODS: The community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Skardu, Pakistan, from August 2016 to January 2017, and comprised pre-school children of either gender. Demographical data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Stool samples were collected and examined for the presence and differentiation of ova / larvae of different intestinal helminths under microscope at the pathology department of a local healthcare facility. Blood haemoglobin was measured from blood samples and anaemia was defined as blood Hb <11g/dL. Data was analysed using SPSS 22. RESULTS: Of the 300 paediatric subjects, 169 (56.3%) were males and 131 (43.7%) females. The overall mean age of the sample was 36±16 months. Of the total, 161(53.67%) were found infected. Among the infected, 93(31%) were males and 68(22.67%) were females (p=0.10). Among those who were infection-free, 46(15.3%) children were anaemic. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of helminthic infections in pre-school children in Skardu was found to be high. The public health problem needs to be addressed for the healthy development of children.
