Reservoir construction promotes many environmental impacts, including the enhancement of mercury concentrations in fish. The processes that can influence mercury concentrations in fish in Amazonian reservoirs are still little explored in depth, especially when we consider the possible particularities of the ecosystems in question. This study aims to investigate how mercury concentrations in fish could be influenced by the Tucuruí dam, considering possible changes in their feeding and trophic position according to the dam position (up or downstream). Fish were sampled upstream and downstream of the Tucuruí reservoir, and total mercury (THg) and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (δ15N and δ13C) were measured in muscles. We observed three different Hg bioaccumulation patterns influenced by the dam. These differences occurred due to species trophic niche changes corroborated by the isotope analysis. Higher THg concentrations downstream compared to those upstream ones were only observed for Geophagus proximus. On the contrary, Plagioscion squamosissimus, from downstream, presented lower concentrations than upstream ones. The isotopic niche of these two species presented different changes according to the sampled site. THg biomagnification was higher upstream compared to downstream, considering that the regression slope was approximately two times higher upstream versus downstream. THg concentrations in fish were explained by the differences in their feeding habits according to their location in relation to the dam. The difference in THg biomagnification was able to reflect differences in structure of the food web chain in ecosystems under the dam's influence.

Hydraulic losses are a crucial variable in hydroelectric ventures as they can cause significant reductions in power generation. This article analyses the impact of hydraulic losses on the Retiro Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP), investigating their effect on monthly average power and, consequently, the efficiency of electricity generation. This study examines the historical series of load losses at the Retiro SHPP from 1990 to 2022. The calculations are based on flow data available in HidroWeb. The study considered the maximum and minimum flow rates in the historical flow series as constraints for hydropower generation. We used a multivariable function to calculate the efficiency of the hydraulic turbine, relating the turbine flow rate and the net water head. We developed mathematical relationships for head losses that occur in the grid, at the water intake, and due to friction from the intake to the turbine of the Retiro SHPP. The article presents a comparison between the actual monthly average power of the Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP) and the simulated monthly average power. We normalized the data for turbine flow and load loss to conduct statistical analysis. Kernel probability density was applied to understand the distribution shape of the data. Findings show that average monthly capacity is lowest in September, at approximately 0.81 MW. In March, the highest power occurs, approximately 14.19 MW. During the high flow period, the simulated average power, which accounts for load losses, closely matched the actual average power generated at the Retiro SHPP. In the months from July to October, despite being the period with the lowest head losses, it is the time when there is a greater opportunity to maximize energy generation at the power plant. An inefficient power generation system experiences significant load losses during specific periods of the year. To minimize this effect, it is crucial to understand the behavior of hydraulic losses and consider implementing mitigating measures.

Hydroelectric power is the main source of electrical energy in Brazil. Electrical energy providers have the duty to monitor water quality in reservoirs to preserve water quality and support best management practices that enable multiple water uses, including fish production. In this context, the objectives of this study were (i) to perform a historical evaluation of water quality in Três Marias Reservoir, (ii) to present an optimization of the water quality monitoring network, and (iii) to evaluate the evolution and impact of fish farming upon surface water quality by using secondary data measured in situ and remote sensing. A systematic approach was applied to analyze historical water quality data. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were applied to identify the most important parameters and monitoring points. Images obtained from Sentinel 2 were treated by contrast to quantify simple and weighted densities of fish farming activities in the region while regression analysis was performed to verify correlations between these densities and water quality parameters. Results showed that the pH and total suspended solids were the most important parameters for characterizing water quality, especially near tributaries, and that monitoring points could be grouped into three clusters (upstream, central, and downstream regions) with distinct water quality conditions. The PCA indicated that there is no redundance among parameters nor monitoring stations and that areas near tributaries must be prioritized for monitoring as these are important sources of suspended solids. Remote sensing images showed that the area occupied by fish farms has increased in the reservoir from 2016 to 2022 and the methodology used for this purpose in this study may be applied to other bodies of water. Chlorophyll-a showed a direct relationship with the density of fish farms indicating a possible influence of nutrient input to the reservoir by this activity. These results provide valuable information to support decision-making related to water management in the reservoir.

Iron (Fe) is the fourth most abundant element on the planet, and iron-oxidising bacteria (FeOB) play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of this metal in nature. FeOB stands out as Fe oxidisers in microaerophilic environments, and new members of this group have been increasingly discussed in the literature, even though their isolation can still be challenging. Among these bacteria is the Gallionellaceae family, mainly composed of neutrophilic FeOB, highlighting Gallionella ferruginea, and nitrite-oxidiser genera. In the previous metagenomic study of the biofilm and sediments of the cooling system from the Irapé hydroelectric power plant (HPP-Irapé), 5% of the total bacteria sequences were related to Gallionellaceae, being 99% unclassified at genus level. Thus, in the present study, a phylogenetic tree based on this family was constructed, in order to search for shared and unique Gallionellaceae signatures in a deep phylogenetic level affiliation and correlated them with geomorphologic characteristics. The results revealed that Gallionella and Ferrigenium were ubiquitous reflecting their ability to adapt to various locations in the power plant. The cave was considered a hotspot for neutrophilic FeOB since it harboured most of the Gallionellaceae diversity. Microscopic biosignatures were detected only in the CS1 sample, which presented abundance of the stalk-forming Ferriphaselus and of the sheath-forming Crenothrix. Further studies are required to provide more detailed insights on Gallionellaceae distribution and diversity patterns in hydroelectric power plants, particularly its biotechnological potential in this industry.

Introduction: The variability in the structure of aquatic communities is frequently attributed to environmental changes; however, in stable environments such as regulated rivers, trophic interactions could be another key environmental factor determining the structure of these communities. These alterations could cause a greater growth of algae, and in turn, changes in the functional groups and in the composition of the macroinvertebrate community favoring the dominance of certain groups of organisms. Objective: To identify the effects of environmental variations and changes in the structure of the phycoperiphyton on the macroinvertebrate community of regulated Andean rivers. Methods: We analyzed environmental and biological data collected in quarterly samples carried out between 2010 and 2018 in two rivers of the Central Andes (Antioquia - Colombia), for a total of 27 samples. Sample collections used standardized methods. Different statistical models were used to establish spatial and temporal patterns of the environmental variables, of the abundance and/or density and diversity of phycoperiphyton and macroinvertebrates, as well as the trophic relationships that exists between them. Results: We found that regulated rivers present relatively little environmental variability. The environmental parameters with the greatest variation were temperature, turbidity, and orthophosphates; these last two were the abiotic variables with the greatest contribution to benthic instability. Conclusion: The presence of scraping and foraging macroinvertebrates was more affected by the stability of the phycoperiphyton density than by environmental variables, showing the importance of trophic interactions in regulated rivers and the bottom up control in these ecosystems.
Introducción: La variabilidad en la estructura de las comunidades acuáticas se atribuye frecuentemente a cambios ambientales, no obstante, en ambientes estables como ríos regulados, las interacciones tróficas podrían ser otro factor ambiental clave determinante de la estructura de estas comunidades. Estas alteraciones podrían provocar un mayor crecimiento de algas y, a su vez, cambios en los grupos funcionales y en la composición de la comunidad de macroinvertebrados favoreciendo la dominancia de determinados grupos de organismos. Objetivo: Identificar el efecto de los cambios ambientales y de la estructura del ficoperifiton sobre la comunidad de macroinvertebrados de ríos Andinos regulados. Métodos: Se analizaron datos ambientales y biológicos recolectados en muestreos trimestrales realizados entre 2010 y 2018 en dos ríos de los Andes Centrales (Antioquia - Colombia), para un total de 27 muestras. La recolección de muestras empleó métodos estandarizados. Se utilizaron diferentes modelos estadísticos para establecer patrones espaciales y temporales de las variables ambientales, de la abundancia y/o densidad y diversidad de ficoperifiton y de los macroinvertebrados, así como las relaciones tróficas que existen entre ellos. Resultados: Se encontró que los ríos regulados presentan relativamente poca variabilidad ambiental. Los parámetros ambientales con mayor variación fueron: temperatura, turbidez y ortofosfatos; las dos últimas variables abióticas fueron las que más aportaron a la inestabilidad bentónica. Conclusión: La presencia de macroinvertebrados raspadores y recolectores fue más afectada por la estabilidad de la densidad del ficoperifiton que por las variables ambientales, evidenciando la importancia de las interacciones tróficas en ríos regulados y el control bottoom up en estos ecosistemas.

Resumen: Este trabajo analiza el campo discursivo de la «Gestión Social¼ de poblaciones reasentadas por grandes proyectos hidroeléctricos. La implantación de grandes proyectos de desarrollo ha venido impulsando los procesos de acumulación ca pitalista en América Latina. En el sector hidroeléctrico, dicha implantación suele implicar el desplazamiento y reasentamiento de poblaciones y ocasionar múlti ples consecuencias adversas para ellas, tales como afectar la base necesaria para su reproducción material y cultural, sus redes de apoyo social y fuentes de in gresos, la modificación de sus formas de vida, entre otros. El debate entre 1970 y 2000 atribuyó la ocurrencia de estos impactos a la ausencia de planes de reasen tamiento. Sin embargo, sugerimos que la existencia de planes no garantiza la ausencia de efectos adversos y que más bien pueden ejercer renovadas formas de control social que deben ser consideradas, para comprender los mecanismos que permiten la persistencia de condiciones de desigualdad social y ambiental.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the discursive field of "Social Management" of populations resettled by large hydroelectric projects. The implementation of large develop ment projects has been driving the processes of capitalist accumulation in Latin America. In the hydroelectric sector, such implementation usually implies the displacement and resettlement of populations and provokes multiple adverse consequences for them, such as affecting the bases necessary for their material and cultural reproduction, their social support networks, and sources of income, the modification of their ways of life, among others. The debate between 1970 and 2000 attributed the occurrence of these impacts to the absence of resettle ment plans. However, we suggest that the existence of plans does not guarantee the absence of adverse effects and that they can rather exert renewed forms of social control that should be considered in order to understand the mechanisms that allow the persistence of conditions of social and environmental inequality.

Syntheses of knowledge are important to reveal trends, biases and gaps in the scientific literature, indicating main data shortfalls and research needs. In this regard, the authors conducted a broad systematic review on the literature about freshwater fish eggs and larvae to investigate (a) temporal trends in the global scientific production, (b) the scope and habitat types, (c) the spatial distribution of studies, (d) the fish species contemplated and their respective conservation status and (e) the factors associated with the spatial distribution of studies. They analysed 654 studies published between 1950 and 2020. The number of studies has increased over time, but with a weak trend. Most studies investigated basic questions about biology and ecology and were carried out chiefly in rivers and lakes. These studies covered 95 freshwater ecoregions (22.3% of all ecoregions) and recorded 871 fish species (4.8% of all freshwater fish currently described). Most species were assessed by the IUCN and classified into six threat categories, but approximately 35% were not evaluated. The main drivers affecting the spatial distribution of studies were ecoregion area, road density, river volume and the number of hydroelectric plants. Results point to significant biases and gaps in the global scientific literature on fish eggs and larvae, especially associated with habitat type, spatial distribution and target species, emphasizing the need to address specific topics. Such biases and gaps indicate the existence of important data shortfalls, which compromise management and conservation planning, as information on fish eggs and larvae is basic and critical for the assessment of fish recruitment and population dynamics.

Previous studies have linked the construction of hydroelectric dams with increases in the density of mosquitoes, especially Mansonia. In Brazil, Mansonia mosquitoes are still poorly studied at the taxonomic, biological, ecological and epidemiological levels, and nothing is known about the genetic diversity and the cryptic speciation of the group. The current study analyzed the molecular taxonomy of Mansonia species captured in the area surrounding the Jirau hydroelectric dam, Rondônia state, Brazil. Samples were collected from fifteen locations between 2018 and 2019. Genomic DNA of the specimens was extracted, and the DNA barcode region of the Cytochrome Oxidase, subunit I gene was amplified with PCR and both DNA strands were sequenced. The dataset was analyzed using MEGA, Mr. Bayes and DnaSP software. The results provided COI sequences for 100 specimens collected in the area surrounding from Jirau hydroelectric dam. These belonged to five species of the Mansonia subgenus, identified morphologically as Mansonia humeralis, Mansonia amazonensis, Mansonia titillans, Mansonia dyari and Mansonia indubitans. Findings showed that the COI gene is an effective and accessible DNA barcode that provides a high-resolution tool for delimiting species within the subgenus Mansonia, with the tree construction (Bayesian Inference) well supported and non-overlapping intraspecific and interspecific (K2-P) genetic distance values. These findings also indicate the occurrence of cryptic speciation within M. dyari and near of M. titillans. This is the first study to apply molecular tools to the taxonomy of Mansonia species from Brazil.

Maintenance in small hydroelectric plants (SHPs) is essential for securing the expansion of clean energy sources and supplying the energy estimated to be required for the coming years. Identifying failures in SHPs before they happen is crucial for allowing better management of asset maintenance, lowering operating costs, and enabling the expansion of renewable energy sources. Most fault prognosis models proposed thus far for hydroelectric generating units are based on signal decomposition and regression models. In the specific case of SHPs, there is a high occurrence of data being censored, since the operation is not consistently steady and can be repeatedly interrupted due to transmission problems or scarcity of water resources. To overcome this, we propose a two-step, data-driven framework for SHP prognosis based on time series feature engineering and survival modeling. We compared two different strategies for feature engineering: one using higher-order statistics and the other using the Tsfresh algorithm. We adjusted three machine learning survival models-CoxNet, survival random forests, and gradient boosting survival analysis-for estimating the concordance index of these approaches. The best model presented a significant concordance index of 77.44%. We further investigated and discussed the importance of the monitored sensors and the feature extraction aggregations. The kurtosis and variance were the most relevant aggregations in the higher-order statistics domain, while the fast Fourier transform and continuous wavelet transform were the most frequent transformations when using Tsfresh. The most important sensors were related to the temperature at several points, such as the bearing generator, oil hydraulic unit, and turbine radial bushing.

In this review, we present a background on the Brazilian Federal Legislation on the environmental licen-sing of hydroelectric plants focusing on the procedure of the repair of environmental damage caused by dams to migratory fish. To that end, the Brazilian electrical matrix was first addressed, thus highlighting the significant contribution of the energy produced by hydroelectric projects. To better contextualize the characteristics of the legislation, separate sections concerning illustrative reports of the effects of dams on migratory fish and the current panorama of aquaculture in Brazil and in the world were included. In this review, we also present a discussion on the specific legislation concerning a mitigation measure, the "fish restocking programs," which have the potential to promote fishing and aquaculture, but still lack a scien-tific basis on their effectiveness and correct application. An assessment of this historical process in Brazil indicates that different mitigation measures imposed to obtain operating licenses by hydroelectric plants vary among different hydroelectric projects and that this heterogeneity in the conditions imposed may have effects (of unknown proportions) on local fish communities. Considering the absence of a specific device foreseen in the law that requires the owner or concessionaire of dams in watercourses to provide for fish restocking programs or specific ichthyofauna conservation programs, the issue seems to depend on the discretion of the licensing agency to demand that the hydroelectric plant operators carry out the rein-troduction of fish in their reservoirs. This review concludes that there are political and scientific issues to be debated and explored in order to improve public policies on this topic of extreme relevance for society.(AU)
Nesta revisão, apresentamos um histórico da legislação brasileira sobre licenciamento ambiental de usi-nas hidrelétricas com foco no procedimento de reparação de danos ambientais aos peixes migratórios causados por barramentos. Para tanto, a matriz elétrica brasileira foi inicialmente abordada, destacando a significativa contribuição da energia produzida por projetos hidrelétricos. A fim de melhor contextua-lizar as características da legislação sobre o tema, foram incluídas seções referentes a relatos ilustrativos acerca dos efeitos das barragens para os peixes migratórios no Brasil e o panorama atual da aquicultura desenvolvida no país e no mundo. Apresentamos também uma discussão sobre a legislação específica relativa a uma medida de mitigação, os "programas de repovoamento de peixes", que têm potencial para promover a pesca e a aquicultura, mas parecem carecer de base científica sobre sua eficácia e correta aplicação. Uma avaliação desse processo histórico no Brasil indicou que as diversas medidas de mitigação impostas a usinas hidrelétricas, para obterem licenças de operação, variam entre os projetos hidrelétricos e que essa heterogeneidade nas condições impostas pode ter efeitos (de proporções desconhecidas) nas comunidades piscícolas locais. Considerando, então, a inexistência de dispositivo específico previsto em lei, que obrigue o proprietário ou a concessionária de barragens em cursos d'água a prever programas de repovoamento de peixes ou de conservação da ictiofauna, a questão parece depender da discricio-nariedade do órgão licenciador de exigir que os operadores das usinas reintroduzam os peixes em seus reservatórios. Esta revisão mostra que há questões políticas e científicas a serem debatidas e exploradas, visando ao aprimoramento de políticas públicas sobre esse tema de extrema relevância para a sociedade.(AU)

RESUMO A construção de usinas hidrelétricas causa modificações no ambiente alterando o território, e impactando nas políticas públicas locais. As transformações ocorrem no contexto social, cultural e de saúde da população. O objetivo do estudo é analisar os impactos na saúde ocasionados pela construção de usinas hidrelétricas. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo com a utilização de uma matriz de saúde ambiental como instrumento para coleta e análise de dados. Os dados são relativos ao período de cinco anos anteriores, que correspondem ao período de construção e posteriores à construção das usinas. A pontuação obtida no estudo por meio da matriz de saúde indicou que as usinas hidrelétricas apresentam severo impacto à saúde, considerando as condições locais ambientais, socioeconômicas e a potencial frequência de incremento ou surgimento de doenças. Os períodos correspondentes aos anos de construção e após a instalação das usinas hidrelétricas são os que apresentaram maior impacto negativo na saúde.
ABSTRACT The construction of hydroelectric plants causes changes in the environment, changing the territory, and impacting local public policies. Transformations occur in the social, cultural and health context of the population. The objective of the study is to analyze the health impacts caused by the construction of hydroelectric plants. This is a quantitative study using an environmental health matrix as an instrument for data collection and analysis. The data are for the period of five years prior, which correspond to the period of construction and after the construction of the plants. The score obtained in the study through the health matrix indicated that hydroelectric power plants have a severe impact on health, considering local environmental, socioeconomic conditions and the potential frequency of increase or appearance of diseases. The periods corresponding to the years of construction and after the installation of hydroelectric plants are those that had the greatest negative impact on health.

Building dams for hydroelectric use causes several negative effects on the aquatic fauna with special attention to fish communities. In fact, among other impacts, dams act as a barrier for migratory fish, causing discontinuities in rivers and not allowing fish to move to the headwaters to breed and back to the lower portions of rivers, to grow. For more than 300 years, fishways have been used to minimize the impact of dams. Here, we assess the worldwide knowledge about fishways, identifying the temporal and spatial pattern and the situation of Brazil in this global pattern. For this, we conducted scientometric research on the Web of Science repository with the following words: weir, fish, facilities, ladder, pass, dam, fish ladder, fish pass, fishway, hydropower, Petromyzon, and salmon between 1985 and 2019. Initially, we obtained 1282 articles. After a selection, 324 articles aimed to describe fishway efficiency and the relationship with the fish fauna remained. Most of the articles on dams, fishways, and fish are from North America and Europe. Among the articles in South America, most are from Brazil. Nonetheless, information on the topic is incipient in Brazil, since the country has one of the biggest hydropower in the world and 42 scientific articles about fishways published in the international scientific database. Ecology is the area of knowledge with most articles, with continuous growth in the last 10 years. Studies in the field of ecology are strategical, as this field can integrate different areas of knowledge to test the efficiency of fishways in fish conservation and may be able to answer the question: "Are fishways an ecological trap?" Research focusing on this question is important to understand the efficiency of fishways to better evaluate solutions to minimize the negative effects of dams on fish and increase the effectiveness of fishways.

ABSTRACT Herein, we report a new record of the milk frog Trachycephalus coriaceus for the Brazilian southern Amazonia and provide an updated geographic distribution map. We collected one specimen of T. coriaceus on 8 november 2016, during a nocturnal survey inside a dense ombrophilous forest in the right bank of the Teles Pires River, municipality ofJacareacanga, southern of Pará State. The record of T. coriaceus to Jacareacanga is the first to the State. The disjoint geographic distribution of this species along de Amazonia may just reflect the paucity of amphibian knowledge throughout this biome and the difficulty to detect this species in the field, given its explosive reproductive behavior.
RESUMEN Aquí, informamos sobre un nuevo registro de la rana lechera Trachycephalus coriaceus para el sur de la Amazonía brasileña y proporcionamos un mapa actualizado de su distribución geográfica. Recolectamos un espécimen de esta especie el 8 de noviembre de 2016, durante un muestreo nocturno dentro de un bosque denso ombrófilo en la margen derecha del río Teles Pires, municipio de Jacareacanga, al sur del estado de Pará. El registro de T. coriaceus en Jacareacanga es el primero en este estado. La distribución geográfica disyunta de esta especie a lo largo de Amazonia puede reflejar la escasez de conocimiento de anfibios en todo este bioma y la dificultad de detectar esta especie en campo, debido a su comportamiento reproductivo explosivo.

In this paper, we describe poisoning outbreaks of Xanthium strumarium in cattle on the borders of the Araguari River, Southeastern Brazil. In this region, several hydroelectric plants promote transient flooding, which creates a favorable environment for the invasion of X. strumarium in extensive areas, often as the predominant species in those areas. The outbreaks occurred between July and September (dry season). Bovines of all ages were affected, including suckling animals. Mortality varied from 2% to 5.5%. The animals exhibited ataxia, weakness, loss of balance, recumbency, and the majority were found dead. Laboratory results showed a marked increase in the serum activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase. Histological and ultrastructural changes in the liver consisted of centrilobular necrosis and hemorrhage. On toxicological evaluation, the dicotyledons contained 0.30 µg/mg of atractyloside and 0.37 µg/mg of carboxyatractyloside. Considerable economic loss has occurred in this region due to the lack of knowledge regarding X. strumarium as a toxic plant and its adaptation to the environmental and climatic conditions of the region, which have made the condition endemic.

Brazil has one of the greatest hydroelectric potential in the world with high number of reservoirs for the electricity generation. However, little is known about the influence of these environments on the water quality. The water quality monitoring data from 14 stations distributed throughout the Irapé HPP reservoir (lentic environment), and its main tributaries (lotic environment), between the years 2008 and 2018, were evaluated and compared to assess the spatial variability of water quality. The analyzed parameters included total alkalinity, thermotolerant coliforms, electric conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved iron, total phosphorus, nitrate, total ammoniacal nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, pH, total dissolved solids, sulfate, water temperature, and turbidity. Cluster analysis (CA), Kruskal-Wallis (KW) tests, Spearman rank-order correlation, and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied to identify and compare the relationship between the main parameters in the lotic and lentic environments. The CA resulted in four clusters according to proximity and the environment type (lotic or lentic). In general, the water quality showed better conditions in the reservoir and in the lotic stations on the immediate surround. The results may be associated with the greater sedimentation in the lentic environment. The analyses indicated that agricultural activities and the geochemical characteristics of the region are the main responsible for changes in the water quality.

The implementation of environmental monitoring programs in areas under anthropogenic pressure is essential to investigate the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity in ecosystems and to establish the most appropriate conservation strategies according to the area. We investigated whether environmental variables or temporal scale influenced zooplankton spatial diversity and beta diversity components in the Madeira River basin (Amazon tributary, Rondônia state, Brazil) from 2009 to 2015. We also investigated the local site contribution to overall beta diversity (LCBD) and to each of its components, to be able to propose conservation strategies more suitable for the river basin. Alpha diversity values decreased over time, while total beta diversity and the abundance difference component increased. A pattern of abundance difference (Podani family) dominated spatial beta diversity within the major sampling campaigns (at each time point). Environmental variables and heterogeneity, temporal scale (sampling campaigns), and also the dam installation contributed to variation in spatial beta diversity and its components. On the other hand, the flood pulse did not influence spatial beta diversity over time. Few sites contributed significantly to beta diversity prior dam installation, but most sites contributed significantly to beta diversity values at least at one point in time, in the post-dam phase. Thus, post-damming, all sites should continue to be monitored for conservation and restoration of zooplankton communities and biodiversity preservation, as changes are likely to still occur. Analysis of beta diversity, its components, and LCBD, are useful and efficient methods to study spatio-temporal changes in communities and identify critical sites. Impoundment and environmental variation significantly affect zooplankton community beta diversity, dependent on underlying mechanisms such as substitution or abundance differences that diversify communities spatially and temporally.

Mercury dynamics in hydroelectric reservoirs have been studied worldwide. In tropical reservoirs, especially in those of the Amazon, the influence of geochemistry on Hg levels along this aquatic system is not well understood. The main objective of the present study was to assess the influence of environmental conditions (physical and chemical water parameters, trace element concentrations of sediment and sediment geochemistry) on mercury levels of sediment along the Balbina Reservoir (Amazon basin, Brazil). Sediment was collected along the reservoir and in the main tributaries in May 2015 (n = 10). These samples were assessed for labile iron (LFe), manganese (LMn), aluminum (LAl) and mercury (LHg) concentrations, total mercury (THg) concentrations, organic matter (OM) content, and granulometry. Concentrations in the sediment were 4-212 (LFe), 2-460 (LAl), 180-613 (LMn), < detection limit-256 (LHg), and 12-307 µg kg-1 dry weight (THg). In general, these concentrations decreased along the reservoir from upstream to downstream, reaching the lowest concentrations in the middle of the lake, and they increased in the sampling points near the dam. The lability and concentrations of mercury were influenced by the concentrations of LFe, LMn, LAl, and the granulometry and OM content of the sediment. Altogether, THg concentrations of sediments of the Balbina Reservoir encompass the range of concentrations of other reservoirs or natural lakes in the Amazon basin (from ten to a few hundred µg kg-1 dry weight).

Megadams are among the key modern drivers of habitat and biodiversity loss in emerging economies. The Balbina Hydroelectric Dam of Central Brazilian Amazonia inundated 312,900 ha of primary forests and created approximately 3500 variable-sized islands that still harbor vertebrate populations after nearly 3 decades after isolation. We estimated the species richness, abundance, biomass, composition, and group size of medium- to large-bodied forest vertebrates in response to patch, landscape, and habitat-quality metrics across 37 islands and 3 continuous forest sites throughout the Balbina archipelago. We conducted 1168 km of diurnal censuses and had 12,420 camera-trapping days along 81 transects with 207 camera stations. We determined the number of individuals (or groups) detected per 10 km walked and the number of independent photographs per 10 camera-trapping days, respectively, for each species. We recorded 34 species, and patch area was the most significant predictor of vertebrate population relative abundance and aggregate biomass. The maximum group size of several group-living species was consistently larger on large islands and in continuous patches than on small islands. Most vertebrate populations were extirpated after inundation. Remaining populations are unlikely to survive further ecological disruptions. If all vertebrate species were once widely distributed before inundation, we estimated that approximately 75% of all individual vertebrates were lost from all 3546 islands and 7.4% of the animals in all persisting insular populations are highly likely to be extirpated. Our results demonstrate that population abundance estimates should be factored into predictions of community disassembly on small islands to robustly predict biodiversity outcomes. Given the rapidly escalating hydropower infrastructure projects in developing counties, we suggest that faunal abundance and biomass estimates be considered in environmental impact assessments and large strictly protected reserves be established to minimize detrimental effects of dams on biodiversity. Conserving large tracts of continuous forests represents the most critical conservation measure to ensure that animal populations can persist at natural densities in Amazonian forests.
Determinantes de la Persistencia Poblacional y la Abundancia de Vertebrados Terrestres y Arbóreos Varados en Islas con Puentes Terrestres en los Bosques Tropicales Resumen Las megapresas se encuentran entre los causantes modernos de la pérdida de hábitat y biodiversidad en las economías emergentes. La Presa Hidroeléctrica Balbina de la Amazonia central en Brasil inundó 312, 900 ha de bosques primarios y creó â¼3500 islas de tamaños variables que todavía albergan poblaciones de vertebrados después de casi tres décadas de aislamiento. Estimamos la riqueza de especies, abundancia, biomasa, composición y tamaño grupal de los vertebrados de talla mediana a grande del bosque como respuesta a la a las medidas de calidad del fragmento, paisaje y hábitat en 37 islas y tres sitios de bosque continuo en todo el archipiélago de Balbina. Realizamos censos diurnos a lo largo de 1,168 km y tuvimos 12,420 días de trampeo con cámaras a lo largo de 81 transectos con 207 estaciones de cámara. Determinamos el número de individuos (o grupos) detectados en cada diez kilómetros recorridos y el número de fotografías independientes para cada diez días de trampeo con cámara, respectivamente, para cada especie. Registramos 34 especies y el área del fragmento fue el pronosticador más importante de la población de vertebrados en relación con la abundancia y la biomasa agregada. El tamaño grupal máximo de varias de las especies gregarias fue sistemáticamente mayor en las islas grandes y en los fragmentos continuos que en las islas pequeñas. La mayoría de las poblaciones de vertebrados fueron extirpadas después de la inundación. Las poblaciones remanentes tienen pocas probabilidades de sobrevivir más perturbaciones ecológicas. Si todas las especies de vertebrados tuvieron alguna vez una distribución amplia previa a la inundación, estimamos que se perdió â¼75% de todos los vertebrados individuales en todas las 3, 546 islas y el 7.4% de los animales en las poblaciones insulares remanentes tienen una alta probabilidad de desaparecer. Nuestros resultados demuestran que las estimaciones de abundancia poblacional deberían incluirse en las predicciones del desmontaje comunitario en islas pequeñas para predecir con solidez los resultados de biodiversidad. Ya que cada vez existen más proyectos de infraestructura hidroeléctrica en los países en desarrollo, sugerimos que las estimaciones de abundancia de fauna y de biomasa sean consideradas en las evaluaciones de impacto ambiental y que se establezcan grandes reservas con protección estricta para minimizar los efectos dañinos que tienen las presas sobre la biodiversidad. La conservación de grandes tramos continuos de bosque representa la medida de conservación más crítica para asegurar que las poblaciones animales puedan persistir con densidades naturales en los bosques de la Amazonia.

Phylogenetic proximity suggests some degree of diet similarity among species. Usually, studies of diet show that species coexistence is allowed by partitioning food resources. We evaluate how visually oriented piscivorous fishes (Characiformes) share prey before and after building the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in the Madeira River (Brazil), the largest muddy-water tributary of the Amazon River. Piscivorous species (Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Acestrorhynchus heterolepis, Hydrolycus scomberoides, and Rhaphiodon vulpinus) were sampled under pristine (pre-HPP) and disturbed (post-HPP) environmental conditions. We analyzed species abundance and stomach contents for stomach fullness and prey composition to check variations between congeneric and non-congeneric species. The percent volume of prey taxa was normalized by stomach fullness and grouped into the taxonomic family level to determine diet, niche breadth, and overlap. Only R. vulpinus abundance increased in post-HPP. There was no significant variation in niche breadth between the periods, while niche overlap decreased in congeneric and non-congeneric species. Our results indicate that river impoundment affected piscivorous fishes in distinct ways and modified their resource partitioning. Therefore, evaluate interspecific interactions is a required tool to understand how fishes respond to river damming.(AU)
A proximidade filogenética pode indicar similaridade da dieta entre espécies e a partilha de recursos alimentares é um mecanismo que possibilita a coexistência. Neste trabalho, avaliamos como peixes piscívoros compartilham presas antes e depois da construção da Usina Hidrelétrica (UHE) Santo Antônio no rio Madeira (Brasil), o maior afluente de águas brancas do rio Amazonas. Espécies piscívoras (Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Acestrorhynchus heterolepis, Hydrolycus scomberoides e Rhaphiodon vulpinus) foram coletadas em condições ambientais pristinas (pré-HPP) e impactadas (pós-HPP). Nós avaliamos as abundâncias e as dietas para identificar variações entre as espécies congenéricas e não-congenéricas. O percentual de volume de cada presa foi corrigido pelo grau de repleção estomacal e os itens agrupados ao nível taxonômico de família para determinar dieta, amplitude e sobreposição alimentar. Apenas a abundância de R. vulpinus aumentou no pós-HPP. Não houve diferença na amplitude alimentar das espécies após o represamento, contudo a sobreposição de nicho diminuiu para as espécies congenéricas e não congenéricas. Nossos resultados indicam que o represamento do rio afetou os peixes piscívoros modificando sua partilha de recursos. Avaliar as interações interespecíficas, portanto, é uma ferramenta necessária para entender como os peixes respondem ao represamento de rios.(AU)

The La Plata basin is the second largest basin of South America and has supported important river fisheries for more than a century. In this paper, we evaluate for the first time the historical trends of landings of 21 fish taxa and the recent population trends of 27 species of commercial fishes in the lower La Plata basin (Argentina). We compiled three kinds of data sets: Total fishery landings (between 1934 and 1986) and exports (1994‒2019), fisheries monitoring programs of Chaco and Santa Fe provinces in the Paraná River (2009‒2019), and surveys of fish populations in the Upper (Corrientes, 1993‒2020) and Middle (EBIPES, 2005‒2020) Paraná River. The analysis of the historical landings showed more species declining in the lower portion of the basin than in the upper basin. Regarding recent population trends, Pimelodus spp., Hoplias spp., Salminus brasiliensis, Luciopimelodus pati, and Ageneiosus spp. declined in more than one region, while Megaleporinus spp., Pterodoras granulosus, and Oxydoras kneri showed stable to positive trends, with the other species varying in their trends between regions. These tendencies could be associated to a combination of factors such as overfishing and environmental changes that would require an ecosystem approach for their adequate management.(AU)
La Cuenca del Plata es la segunda más grande de Sudamérica y ha soportado importantes pesquerías fluviales desde hace más de un siglo. En este trabajo, evaluamos por primera vez las tendencias históricas en los desembarques pesqueros de 21 taxones de peces y las tendencias poblacionales recientes de 27 especies de peces comerciales de la baja Cuenca del Plata (Argentina). Compilamos tres tipos de datos: desembarques pesqueros totales (1934‒1986) y exportaciones (1994‒2019), programas de monitoreo de pesca comercial de las provincias de Chaco y Santa Fe en el río Paraná (2009‒2019), y relevamientos de peces en el río Paraná Alto (Corrientes, 1993‒2020) y Medio (EBIPES, 2005‒2020). El análisis de los desembarques históricos mostró más disminuciones en la porción baja de la cuenca que en la porción alta. En cuanto a las tendencias poblacionales recientes, Pimelodus spp., Hoplias spp., Salminus brasiliensis, Luciopimelodus pati y Ageneiosus spp. declinaron en más de un sector, mientras que Megaleporinus spp., Pterodoras granulosus y Oxydoras kneri mostraron tendencias estables a positivas, con las otras especies variando en sus tendencias entre regiones. Estas tendencias podrían asociarse a una combinación de factores como la sobrepesca y los cambios ambientales que requerirían una aproximación ecosistémica para su adecuado manejo.(AU)
