RESUMO

Inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IPT-like FDCS) is a rare malignancy with fewer than 150 cases in the literature. IPT-like FDCS follows an indolent course with most cases definitively managed with surgical resection. We present a case of IPT-like FDCS with multiple recurrences with a trial of immunotherapy. The patient initially presented with splenic involvement requiring splenectomy, subsequently recurring in the liver requiring hepatic resections. Afterwards, there was recurrence with pelvic/small bowel involvement for which treatment was trialed with ipilimumab and nivolumab. The patient progressed despite dual immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy requiring a small bowel resection. To date, this is the first case of immunotherapy use in IPT-like FDCS. Therefore, more evidence is needed to support additional treatments in recurrent IPT-like FDCS after resection.

BACKGROUND: Across sub-Saharan Africa, mid-level healthcare managers oversee implementation of national guidelines. It remains unclear whether leadership and management training can improve population health outcomes. METHODS: We sought to evaluate leadership/management skills among district-level health managers in Uganda participating in the SEARCH-IPT randomised trial to promote isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) for persons with HIV (PWH). The intervention, which led to higher IPT rates, included annual leadership/management training of managers. We conducted a cross-sectional survey assessing leadership/management skills among managers at trial completion. The survey evaluated self-reported use of leadership/management tools and general leadership/management. We conducted a survey among a sample of providers to understand the intervention's impact. Targeted minimum loss-based estimation (TMLE) was used to compare responses between trial arms. RESULTS: Of 163 managers participating in the SEARCH-IPT trial, 119 (73%) completed the survey. Intervention managers reported more frequent use of leadership/management tools taught in the intervention curriculum than control managers (+3.64, 95% CI 1.98-5.30, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in self-reported leadership skills in the intervention as compared to the control group. Among providers, the average reported quality of guidance and supervision was significantly higher in intervention vs control districts (+1.08, 95% CI 0.63-1.53, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A leadership and management training intervention increased the use of leadership/management tools among mid-level managers and resulted in higher perceived quality of supervision among providers in intervention vs control districts in Uganda. These findings suggest improved leadership/management among managers contributed to increased IPT use among PWH in the intervention districts of the SEARCH-IPT trial.


CONTEXTE: Dans toute l'Afrique subsaharienne, les gestionnaires de soins de santé de niveau intermédiaire supervisent la mise en œuvre des directives nationales. Il n'est toujours pas clair si la formation en leadership et en gestion peut améliorer les résultats en matière de santé de la population. MÉTHODES: Nous avons cherché à évaluer les compétences en leadership et en gestion des responsables de la santé au niveau des districts en Ouganda participant à l'essai randomisé SEARCH-IPT visant à promouvoir le traitement préventif à l'isoniazide (TPI) pour les personnes vivant avec le VIH (PWH, pour l'anglais « people living with HIV ¼). L'intervention, qui a permis d'augmenter les taux de TPI, comprenait une formation annuelle en leadership et en gestion des gestionnaires. Nous avons mené une enquête transversale pour évaluer les compétences en leadership et en gestion des gestionnaires à la fin de l'essai. L'enquête a évalué l'utilisation autodéclarée d'outils de leadership et de gestion et de leadership et de gestion en général. Nous avons mené une enquête auprès d'un échantillon de prestataires pour comprendre l'impact de l'intervention. L'estimation ciblée basée sur les pertes minimales (TMLE, « Targeted minimum loss-based estimation ¼) a été utilisée pour comparer les réponses entre les groupes de l'essai. RÉSULTATS: Sur les 163 gestionnaires qui ont participé à l'essai SEARCH-IPT, 119 (73%) ont répondu au sondage. Les gestionnaires d'intervention ont déclaré utiliser plus fréquemment les outils de leadership/gestion enseignés dans le programme d'intervention que les gestionnaires de contrôle (+3,64 ; IC à 95% 1,98­5,30 ; P < 0,001). CONCLUSIONS: Une intervention de formation au leadership et à la gestion a permis d'accroître l'utilisation d'outils de leadership et de gestion parmi les cadres intermédiaires et d'améliorer la perception de la qualité de la supervision parmi les prestataires dans les districts d'intervention par rapport aux districts de contrôle en Ouganda. Ces résultats suggèrent que l'amélioration du leadership et de la gestion chez les gestionnaires a contribué à l'augmentation de l'utilisation du TPI chez les personnes handicapées dans les districts d'intervention de l'essai SEARCH-IPT.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been demonstrated to be effective in arresting caries lesions and, recently, clinical trials have assessed the effectiveness of SDF as a medicament for indirect pulp therapy (IPT) in primary teeth. This review aims to summarize the literature related to the use of SDF and find out if SDF can be used as an effective material for IPT. A literature search was undertaken on electronic databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, which elicited 50 studies employing different materials in the IPT of primary molars; however, of them, only four clinical trials used SDF as indirect pulp capping (IPC) material. SDF has the potential to be a useful material for IPT in primary teeth. It is a handy choice for pediatric dentists due to its minimum invasiveness, ease of application, and ability to stop the progression of caries. However, more studies are needed to determine whether SDF can be used routinely for IPT and whether it can even replace the currently available materials, as well as to fully realize its potential and establish criteria for its ideal application in IPT procedures.

PURPOSE: The volume of arthroscopic hip surgery has increased dramatically in recent years with iliopsoas tendinitis (IPT) being one of the most common complications of this procedure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of post-operative IPT in patients who undergo arthroscopic hip surgery with capsular closure using absorbable versus non-absorbable suture. METHODS: This is a single center, single surgeon, retrospective analysis performed between August 2007 and May 2023 comparing two cohorts who underwent hip arthroscopy. Patients were divided into those who underwent surgery with capsular closure using absorbable (Vicryl®, Johnson and Johnson, New Brunswick, NJ) suture and those who underwent capsular closure with non-absorbable suture (Suturetape, Arthrex, Naples FL). All patients who underwent primary or revision hip arthroscopy and were at least 2 months post-operation were initially included in the study. RESULTS: Between August 2007 and May 2023 a total of 1513 hip arthroscopy surgeries were performed. Within this cohort, 1421 hips underwent hip arthroscopy with non-absorbable suture and 64 hips underwent surgery with absorbable suture. There was no significant difference between the proportion of IPT in the non-absorbable cohort (2.3%) versus the absorbable cohort (1.6%) (P = 0.669). CONCLUSION: Capsular closure with Absorbable sutures was non-inferior to capsular closure with non-absorbable sutures with respect to the proportion of post-operative IPT following hip arthroscopy for FAI. Additionally, the proportion of post-operative IPT was found to be significantly higher in patients undergoing revision versus primary hip arthroscopy, regardless of capsular closure suture type. BACKGROUND: Approximately 32 million pregnant women are at risk of malaria with up to 10,000 maternal deaths and 200,000 neonates at risk annually. Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPT) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce disease in pregnancy and adverse maternal and newborn outcomes. At least three doses of SP should be taken by pregnant women during antenatal consultation (ANC) beginning from the thirteenth week of pregnancy till parturition. The aim of this study was to assess uptake of IPT during pregnancy and risk factors for maternal anaemia and infant birth weight in Dschang, West region of Cameroon. METHODS: A total of 380 consenting pregnant women at delivery were recruited in a cross- sectional prospective survey between January to December 2021. Data on ANC attendance, total dose of IPT and history of malaria were abstracted from hospital ANC records while socio-demographic characteristics, bed net use and obstetrics history of each participant were also recorded through an interview. Further, blood samples were collected from the intervillous space for assessment of maternal anaemia and microscopic parasitology. Nested PCR based on amplification of the Plasmodium 18S sRNA was carried out to detect submicroscopic infection. IPTp coverage was calculated per WHO recommendation and the prevalence of anaemia and low birth weight were estimated as proportions in the total sample of pregnant women and live births, respectively. Crude and adjusted odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were used to estimate associations between pregnancy outcomes considered and risk factors in specific and general models. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. The R software (V4.1.4) was used for all analyses. RESULTS: A majority of pregnant women was aged between 24 and 34 years old (59.2%) and had secondary education (58.8%). Uptake of ≥ 3 IPTp was 64.99% with 77.20% of all who received at least one IPTp doses taking a mix of SP and DP or DP alone in successive ANC contacts. Those with four or more ANC contacts (73.42%) were more likely to have received at least one IPTp. Furthermore, 13.9% of live births had low birthweights (BW < 2500 g) and one in four parturient women with moderate anaemia by WHO criteria. Microscopy (blood smear examination) and PCR-based diagnosis revealed between 0% and 1.57% of parasite-infected placental samples, respectively. Reported malaria in pregnancy predicted maternal anaemia at birth but not birth weight. Only gestational age (< 37 weeks) and bed net use (< 5 months) significantly predicted infant birth weight at delivery. CONCLUSION: The uptake of WHO recommended IPT doses during pregnancy was moderately high. Reported malaria in pregnancy, poor bed net coverage, gestational age less than 37 weeks adversely affect maternal haemoglobin levels at birth and infant birth weight. Asymptomatic and submicroscopic placental parasite infections was found at low prevalence. Together these results highlight the importance of maintaining aggressive measures to prevent malaria in pregnancy and protect the health of mother and baby.

Isoprothiolane (IPT) and tricyclazole (TCZ) are widely used in rice farming and recently in combined rice-fish farming. However, co-cultured animals are affected by these pesticides. To investigate the organismal effects and toxicity of pesticides, crayfish were exposed to 0, 1, 10, or 100 ppt TCZ or IPT for 7 days. Pesticide bioaccumulation, survival rate, metabolic parameters, structure of intestinal flora, and antioxidant-, apoptosis-, and HSP-related gene expression were determined. Pesticide exposure caused bioaccumulation of IPT or TCZ in the hepatopancreas and muscles of crayfish; however, IPT bioaccumulation was higher than that of TCZ. Both groups showed significant changes in hepatopancreatic serum biochemical parameters. Mitochondrial damage and chromosomal agglutination were observed in hepatopancreatic cells exposed to 100 ppt IPT or TCZ. IPT induced more significant changes in serum biochemical parameters than TCZ. The results of intestinal flora showed that Vibro, Flavobacterium, Anaerorhabdus and Shewanella may have potential for use as a bacterial marker of TCZ and IPT. Antioxidant-, apoptosis-, and HSP-related gene expression was disrupted by pesticide exposure, and was more seriously affected by IPT. The results suggest that IPT or TCZ induce hepatopancreatic cell toxicity; however, IPT or TCZ content in dietary crayfish exposed to 1 ppt was below the food safety residue standard. The data indicated that IPT exposure may be more toxic than TCZ exposure in hepatopancreas and intestines and toxicity of organism are alleviated by activating the pathway of stress-response, providing an understanding of pesticide compounds in rice-fish farming and food safety.

Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT) is a powerful tool for preventing the TB infection from developing into active TB disease, and has recently been expanded to all household contacts of TB cases in India. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to conduct a situational analysis of the initial phase of TPT implementation among household contacts of pulmonary TB patients in three districts of Delhi, India. It was completed using a checklist based assessments, care cascade data, and qualitative analysis. Our observations indicated that organizational structure and planning were established, but implementation of TPT was suboptimal with issues in drug availability and procurement, budget, human resources, and training. Awareness and motivation, and shorter regimen, telephonic assessment, and collaboration with NGOs emerged as enablers. Apprehension about taking TPT, erratic drug supply, long duration of treatment, side effects, overburden, large population, INH resistance, data entry issues, and private provider reluctance emerged as barriers. The study revealed potential solutions for optimizing TPT implementation. It is evident that, while progress has been made in TPT implementation, there is room for improvement and refinement across various domains.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) completion rates among children or adolescents compared to adults living with HIV in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis including children, adolescents, and adults living with HIV who were treated at FHI360 and partners-implemented HIV care programs at six health zones in Kinshasa, DRC, from 2004 to 2020. The primary outcome was the proportion of children, adolescents versus adults who did complete 6 months of daily self-administered IPT. Log-binomial regression assessed independent predictors of IPT non-completion and Kaplan-Meier technique for survival analysis. RESULTS: Of 11,691 eligible patients on ART who initiated IPT, 429 were children (<11 years), 804 adolescents (11-19 years), and 10,458 adults (≥20 years). The median age was 7 (IQR: 3-9) years for children, 15 (IQR: 13-17) years for adolescents, and 43 (35-51) years for adults. Among those who were initiated on IPT, 5625 out of 11,691 people living with HIV (PLHIV) had IPT completion outcome results, and an overall 3457/5625 (61.5%) completion rate was documented. Compared to adults, children and adolescents were less likely to complete IPT [104/199 (52.3%) and 268/525 (51.0%), respectively, vs. 3085/4901 (62.9%)]. After adjustment, the only independent predictors for IPT non-completion were health zone of residence and type of ART regimen. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed comparable poor survival among patients who completed IPT versus those who did not (p-value for log-rank test, 0.15). CONCLUSIONS: The overall sub-optimal IPT completion rate in adults as well as children/adolescents in this setting is of great concern. Prospective studies are needed to elucidate the specific barriers to IPT completion among children, adolescents, and adults in DRC as well as the scale-up of evidence-informed interventions to improve IPT completion, such as adoption of shorter TB preventive regimens.

Training district-level health officers and other mid-level health system managers revealed multiple contextual factors across political, administrative, and social axes affecting tuberculosis (TB) and TB control in Uganda. Individual relationships between local health, political, and media leaders affect efforts to inform the public and provide services, yet greater administrative coordination between national-level logistics, implementing partner funding, and local needs is required. Social challenges to TB control include high population mobility, local industries, poverty with high-density living and social venues, and misinformation about TB. Capitalizing on implementation knowledge and sharing data can overcome social geographic challenges to TB-prevention planning through strategic healthcare capacity-building at the district level.

Early in the history of cytokinins, it was clear that Zea mays seeds contained not just trans-zeatin, but its nucleosides and nucleotides. Subsequently, both pods and seeds of legumes and cereal grains have been shown to contain a complex of cytokinin forms. Relative to the very high quantities of cytokinin detected in developing seeds, only a limited amount appears to have been translocated from the parent plant. Translocation experiments, and the detection of high levels of endogenous cytokinin in the maternal seed coat tissues of legumes, indicates that cytokinin does not readily cross the maternal/filial boundary, indicating that the filial tissues are autonomous for cytokinin biosynthesis. Within the seed, trans-zeatin plays a key role in sink establishment and it may also contribute to sink strength. The roles, if any, of the other biologically active forms of cytokinin (cis-zeatin, dihydrozeatin and isopentenyladenine) remain to be elucidated. The recent identification of genes coding for the enzyme that leads to the biosynthesis of trans-zeatin in rice (OsCYP735A3 and 4), and the identification of a gene coding for an enzyme (CPN1) that converts trans-zeatin riboside to trans-zeatin in the apoplast, further cements the key role played by trans-zeatin in plants.

Objective: Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based therapy. There have been increasing demand and training opportunities of IPT in China. Reviewing current evidence on its use in Chinese patients can help us understand the applicability of IPT in China and identify knowledge gaps to encourage and better future research in this field. Method: We did a comprehensive search of three major electronic databases: PubMed (English), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WanFang Data (Chinese). We examined overall study design, outcome measures, data analyses and other parameters. We only selected articles of Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT) for this review. All study findings were grouped and summarized per psychiatric diagnoses. The meta-analysis and forest plots were performed whereas studies could be combined. Results: After a full text review of 132 articles, 40 were selected for the final review. Comparing with control groups, evidences supported the efficacy of IPT in Chinese patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Postpartum depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder, Post Stress Traumatic Disorder (PTSD), and Post-psychotic Depression. It was also beneficial to college students and Chinese first-time mothers. Meta-analysis using a random-effects model consistently yielded significant score differences between the IPT and control groups (p < 0.0001) on MDD. Conclusion: This systematic review has identified the current best evidence for IPT efficacy in Chinese population. The findings support IPT as an effective treatment in Chinese with certain psychiatric conditions, consistent with those from many other studies throughout the world.

BnIPT gene family members in Brassica napus and analyzing their expression under different exogenous hormones and abiotic stress treatments to provide a theoretical basis for clarifying their functions and molecular genetic mechanisms in nitrogen deficiency stress tolerance of B. napus. Using the Arabidopsis IPT protein as the seed sequence, combined with the IPT protein domain PF01715, 26 members of the BnIPT gene family were identified from the whole genome of the rape variety ZS11. Additionally, the physicochemical properties and structures, phylogenetic relationships, synteny relationships, protein-protein interaction network, and gene ontology enrichment were analyzed. Based on transcriptome data, the expression patterns of the BnIPT gene under different exogenous hormone and abiotic stress treatments were analyzed. We used the qPCR method to identify the relative expression level of BnIPT genes that may be related to the stress resistance of rapeseed in transcriptome analysis under normal nitrogen (N: 6 mmol·L-1) and nitrogen deficiency (N: 0) conditions and analyzed its effect on rapeseed under nitrogen deficiency stress role in tolerance. In response to nitrogen deficiency signals, the BnIPT gene showed a trend of up-regulation in shoots and down-regulation in roots, indicating that it may affect the process of nitrogen transport and redistribution to enhance the stress resistance of rapeseed to respond to the nitrogen deficiency stress. This study provides a theoretical basis for clarifying the function and molecular genetic mechanism of the BnIPT gene family in nitrogen deficiency stress tolerance in rape.

Cytokinins are known to keep stomata open, which supports gas exchange and correlates with increased photosynthesis. However, keeping the stomata open can be detrimental if the increased transpiration is not compensated for by water supply to the shoots. In this study, we traced the effect of ipt (isopentenyl transferase) gene induction, which increases the concentration of cytokinins in transgenic tobacco plants, on transpiration and hydraulic conductivity. Since water flow depends on the conductivity of the apoplast, the deposition of lignin and suberin in the apoplast was studied by staining with berberine. The effect of an increased concentration of cytokinins on the flow of water through aquaporins (AQPs) was revealed by inhibition of AQPs with HgCl2. It was shown that an elevated concentration of cytokinins in ipt-transgenic plants increases hydraulic conductivity by enhancing the activity of aquaporins and reducing the formation of apoplastic barriers. The simultaneous effect of cytokinins on both stomatal and hydraulic conductivity makes it possible to coordinate the evaporation of water from leaves and its flow from roots to leaves, thereby maintaining the water balance and leaf hydration.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the differential diagnosis of girls aged 6 to 8 years with idiopathic premature thelarche (IPT) and central precocious puberty (CPP) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We explored predicted adult height (PAH) discrepancy to guide appropriate diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: From January 2020 to December 2021, Chinese girls aged 6 to 8 years with precocious puberty were recruited. They were divided into IPT and CPP groups. Clinical characteristics, including height, weight, body mass index (BMI), basal luteinizing hormone (LH), oestradiol, uterine length and volume, follicle numbers (d > 4 mm) and bone age (BA) were recorded. We analysed differential diagnosis and PAH discrepancy in both groups. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to explore risk factors for CPP, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to evaluate the diagnostic value of related indexes. RESULTS: Sixty patients, including 40 girls with IPT and 20 girls with CPP, were recruited. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the entire cohort was 25% (15/60) and was significantly higher in IPT than CPP, 32.5% (13/40) vs. 10% (2/20), respectively (P=0.045). There were significant differences in LH, uterine volume, follicle numbers and BA (P<0.05). The impaired PAH of IPT and CPP was 0.01 ± 1.19 SD and 0.62 ± 0.94 SD with significant differences (P=0.047). Logistic regression analysis showed that LH and follicle numbers were independent risk factors for CPP. The ROC curve showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of LH and follicle numbers were 0.823 and 0.697. The sensitivity and specificity of LH with a cut off of 0.285 IU/L were 78.9% and 77.8%. The sensitivity and specificity of follicle numbers with a cut off of 3.5 were 89.5% and 52.8%. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in 6- to 8-year-old girls with precocious puberty was high. Auxological data should not be used in the differential diagnosis of IPT and CPP. Basal LH above 0.285 IU/L and follicle numbers greater than 4 were important features suggestive of CPP. PAH was impaired in individuals with CPP, but it was not impaired in individuals with IPT.

Aim of the study: Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare benign tumor that can occur at various body sites. Due to its rare occurrence and histological variety radiological data is heterogeneous and limited. Case description: We present a case of a 71-year-old man with inflammatory pseudotumor of the omentum. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound perfusion pattern showed homogeneous, isoechoic enhancement in the arterial phase with a washout phenomenon in the parenchymal phase, mimicking a peritoneal carcinomatosis. Conclusions: Inflammatory pseudotumor represents a rare, but important benign differential diagnostic option when considering a malignant disorder. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound is helpful in identifying vital tissue for a targeted biopsy for subsequent histological examination that is essential for the exclusion of malignancy.

Cytokinin is a major phytohormone that has been used in agriculture as a plant-growth stimulating compound since its initial discovery in the 1960s. Isopentenyl transferase (IPT) is a rate-limiting enzyme for cytokinin biosynthesis, which is produced by plants as well as bacteria including both plant pathogenic species and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). It has been hypothesized that there may be differences in IPT function between plant pathogens and PGPB. However, a comprehensive comparison of IPT genes between plant pathogenic and PGPB species has not been performed. Here, we performed a global comparison of IPT genes across bacteria, analyzing their DNA sequences, codon usage, phyletic distribution, promoter structure and genomic context. We found that adenylate type IPT genes are highly specific to plant-associated bacteria and subdivide into two major clades: clade A, largely composed of proteobacterial plant pathogens; and clade B, largely composed of actinomycete PGPB species. Besides these phylogenetic differences, we identified several genomic features that suggest differences in IPT regulation between pathogens and PGPB. Pathogen-associated IPTs tended to occur in predicted virulence loci, whereas PGPB-associated IPTs tended to co-occur with other genes involved in cytokinin metabolism and degradation. Pathogen-associated IPTs also showed elevated gene copy numbers, significant deviation in codon usage patterns, and extended promoters, suggesting differences in regulation and activity levels. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that differences in IPT regulation and activity exist between plant pathogens and PGPB, which determine their effect on plant host phenotypes through the control of cytokinin levels.

Background: Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) initiation during pregnancy was associated with increased incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in the TB APPRISE trial. Effects of in utero IPT exposure on infant growth are unknown. Methods: This post-hoc analysis used data from the TB APPRISE trial, a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which randomised women to 28-week IPT starting in pregnancy (pregnancy-IPT) or postpartum week 12 (postpartum-IPT) in eight countries with high tuberculosis prevalence. Participants were enrolled between August 2014 and April 2016. Based on modified intent-to-treat analyses, we analysed only live-born babies who had at least one follow-up after birth and compared time to infant growth faltering between arms to 12 weeks and 48 weeks postpartum in overall and sex-stratified multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression. Factors adjusted in the final models include sex of infant, mother's baseline BMI, age in years, ART regimen, viral load, CD4 count, education, and household food insecurity. Results: Among 898 HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants, 447 (49.8%) were females. Infants in pregnancy-IPT had a 1.47-fold higher risk of becoming underweight by 12 weeks (aHR 1.47 [95% CI: 1.06, 2.03]) than infants in the postpartum-IPT; increased risk persisted to 48 weeks postpartum (aHR 1.34 [95% CI: 1.01, 1.78]). Maternal IPT timing was not associated with stunting or wasting. In sex-stratified analyses, male infants in the pregnancy-IPT arm experienced an increased risk of low birth weight (LBW) (aRR 2.04 [95% CI: 1.16, 3.68), preterm birth (aRR 1.81 [95% CI: 1.04, 3.21]) and becoming underweight by 12 weeks (aHR 2.02 [95% CI: 1.29, 3.18]) and 48 weeks (aHR 1.82 [95% CI: 1.23, 2.69]). Maternal IPT timing did not influence growth in female infants. Interpretation: Maternal IPT during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of LBW, preterm birth, and becoming underweight among HEU infants, particularly male infants. These data add to prior TB APPRISE data, suggesting that IPT during pregnancy impacts infant growth, which could inform management, and warrants further examination of mechanisms. Understanding the contribution of asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers in malaria transmission might be helpful to design and implement new control measures. The present study explored the prevalence of asymptomatic and symptomatic Plasmodium infections (asexual and sexual stages) and the contribution of asymptomatic P. falciparum carriers to Anopheles-mediated malaria transmission in Ouidah (Benin). Thick and thin blood smears were examined from finger-prick blood specimens using light microscopy, and the density of both asexual and sexual stages of Plasmodium species was calculated. Infectivity of gametocyte-infected blood samples to Anopheles gambiae was assessed through direct membrane feeding assays. The prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infections was 28.73% (289/1006). All the asymptomatic gametocyte-carriers (19/19), with gametocytaemia ranging from 10 - 1200 gametocytes/µL of blood, were infectious to An. gambiae mosquitoes. The mean oocyst prevalences varied significantly (χ 2  = 16.42, df = 7, p = 0.02) among laboratory mosquito strains (6.9 - 39.4%) and near-field mosquitoes (4.9 - 27.2%). Likewise, significant variation (χ 2  = 56.85, df = 7, p = 6.39 × 10-10) was observed in oocyst intensity. Our findings indicate that asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers could significantly contribute to malaria transmission. Overall, this study highlights the importance of diagnosing and treating asymptomatic and symptomatic infection carriers during malaria control programmes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to review evidence on Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) administered via telephone (IPT-T). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies published between January 1, 1990 and June 30, 2020, assessing the efficacy of IPT administered by phone, using PubMed. RESULTS: Originally, we found 60 papers; the final selection led to 13 papers. Six studies were performed using a randomized clinical trial methodology (6/13, 46.2%), three were prospective open-label not randomized studies (3/13, 15.7%), three were pilot studies (3/13, 23.1%), and one was a feasibility/acceptance study (1/13, 7.7%). The number of subjects included in the studies ranged between 14 and 442 (mean: 140.0 ± 124.9), for a total of 1850 patients. The mean age of the enrolled subjects was 47.8 ± 9.3 years (range: 27.4-70.4). Thirty-four different instruments were utilized. Qualitative synthesis was conducted only on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), namely on six studies. RCTs were almost all of good quality (mean score/standard deviation of the RCT-Psychotherapy Quality Rating Scale omnibus rating: 5.6 ± 1.2 points; range: 3-7). CONCLUSIONS: IPT-T showed response rates similar to IPT administered in the usual way. Results are limited by small samples sizes, selection bias of the less severe depressed patients, and the heterogeneity of rating scales.
