RESUMO

This study describes Lipogenys hyalinumvelum, a new species of the genus Lipogenys found on the Portuguese coast on the northeastern Atlantic during a crustacean survey. Information on the classification history and known distribution of the genus Lipogenys is provided. Dichotomous keys to the genera of Notacanthidae and the species of Lipogenys, based on morphology, are provided. The specimens were analysed using both morphological and molecular methods, including DNA sequencing of the COI and 16S genes. The distinct genetic characteristics support the recognition of the present specimens as a new species. The hyaline color of the flap at the posterior edge of the operculum is a characteristic that differentiates L. hyalinumvelum from Lipogenys gillii and provides the etymology of the species name.

RESUMO

A new labrid fish species, Halichoeres sanchezi n. sp., is described from eight specimens collected in the Revillagigedo Archipelago in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Mexico. The new species belongs to the Halichoeres melanotis species complex that is found throughout the region, differing by 2.4% in the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase I sequence from its nearest relative, H. melanotis from Panama, and 2.9% from Halichoeres salmofasciatus from Cocos Island, off Costa Rica. The complex is distinguished from others in the region by having a black spot on the opercular flap and a prominent black area on the caudal fin of males. The juveniles and initial phase of the new species closely resemble those of H. salmofasciatus and Halichoeres malpelo from Malpelo Island of Colombia, differing in having an oblong black spot with a yellow dorsal margin on the mid-dorsal fin of initial-phase adults as well as on juveniles. In contrast, the terminal-phase male color pattern is distinct from other relatives, being vermilion to orangish brown with dark scale outlines, a white patch on the upper abdomen, and a prominent black band covering the posterior caudal peduncle and base of the caudal fin. The new species adds to the list of endemic fish species for the isolated archipelago and is an interesting case of island endemism in the region. The discovery was made during the joint 2022 collecting expedition to the archipelago, which featured a pioneering collaborative approach to an inventory of an island ichthyofauna, specifically including expert underwater photographers systematically documenting specimens in situ, before hand-collection, and then photographed fresh, tissue-sampled, and subsequently vouchered in museum collections.

Expressed subtype of paralogous genes in functionally homologous cells sometimes show differences across species, the reasons for which have not been explained. The present study examined hypophysiotropic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in vertebrates to investigate this mechanism. These neurons express either gnrh1 or gnrh3 paralogs, depending on the species, and apparent switching of the expressed paralogs in them occurred at least four times in vertebrate evolution. First, we found redundant expression of gnrh1 and gnrh3 in a single neuron in piranha and hypothesized that it may represent an ancestral GnRH system. Moreover, the gnrh1/gnrh3 enhancer of piranha induced reporter RFP/GFP co-expression in a single hypophysiotropic GnRH neuron in both zebrafish and medaka, whose GnRH neurons only express either gnrh3 or gnrh1. Thus, we propose that redundant expression of gnrh1/3 of relatively recent common ancestors may be the key to apparent switching of the paralog usage among present-day species.

Background: The paper presents an extensive fish sampling dataset spanning a long-term period from 2010 to 2019. The data were collected in Lenta Marina, an upstream area in the Minho Estuary of the NW Iberian Peninsula, which belongs to a LTSER (Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research) platform. To capture fish, fyke nets were utilised as the sampling method and deployed at Lenta Marina. This dataset offers valuable insights into the abundance of each collected taxa recorded over time. New information: The dataset reports a comprehensive compilation of data on the abundance of fish species observed in the area during the sampling period (includes zeroes when a given taxonomic entity was absent in a given sampling event). It provides a detailed record of the abundances of the fish community through time in a frequent sampling regime (on average, sampling was done every 6 days). The dataset shows that the amount of fish from invasive taxa exceeds the count of fish from native taxa in the Minho Estuary.

Background: Reversed condition is rarely found in most flatfishes in natural environment, except for some certain species. The mechanism controlling the reversals in flatfishes has been studied in some cultivated species, whereas some have only few cases for the entire family and remain unclear. Here, we report the first record of a dextral (reversed) specimen of Parabothus taiwanensis Amaoka & Shen, 1993 collected off southwestern Taiwan recently. It represents the second reversed case ever recorded in Bothidae. We aim to provide a detailed description of this dextral specimen and compared to the sinistral (normal) specimens collected from the vicinity. Methods: Specimens were fixed in 4% formaldehyde and transferred to 70% ethanol for preservation. Meristic and morphometric characters were examined for both dextral and sinistral specimens. Dissections were made on specimens to confirm the position of internal organs. Lastly, X-radiographs were taken to elucidate the osteological features. Results: As a result, no differences of both meristic and morphometric characters were observed between the dextral and sinistral specimens. Nevertheless, situs inversus viscerum is discovered in the dextral specimen for the first time in Bothidae and the sixth record within flatfishes.

Two new cutthroat eel species are described from Vietnam. Dysomma intermedium sp. nov. has a relatively long trunk, being about half of head length and anal-fin origin more than twice pectoral-fin length behind the pectoral-fin tip; pectoral fin well developed; dorsal-fin origin over or slightly in front of base of pectoral fin; two intermaxillary teeth; four or five compound teeth on ethmovomer; single row of seven or eight teeth on lower jaw; total lateral-line pores 70-76; and 21 pre-anal and 118-124 total vertebrae. Dysommina brevis sp. nov. differs from congeners by having a trunk shorter than head length, its length 11.1%-11.8% TL; a short pre-anal length 24.6%-25.6% TL, eye diameter 11.8%-12.3% head length; three large and one or two small teeth on ethmovomer; and fewer teeth on the upper and lower jaws. In addition, a specimen representing the first record of Dysommina orientalis in Vietnamese water is documented.

We identified that the genes heat shock transcription factor 5 (hsf5) and ring finger protein 43 (rnf43) happened fusion in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), called hsf5-rnf43, and provided the characteristic and functional analysis of hsf5-rnf43 gene in fish for the first time. Analysis of spatiotemporal expression showed that hsf5-rnf43 was specifically expressed in the testis and located in primary spermatocytes of adult Nile tilapia and gradually increased during testis development from 5 to 180 days after hatching. We also found DNA methylation regulated sex-biased expression of hsf5-rnf43 in the early development of Nile tilapia, and was affected by high temperature during the thermosensitive period of Nile tilapia sex differentiation. Therefore, we first reported that the fusion gene hsf5-rnf43 was sex-biased expressed in the testis regulated by DNA methylation and affected by high temperature, which may be involved in the maintenance of testis function and sex differentiation of Nile tilapia.

Tropical deep reefs (~40-300 m) are diverse ecosystems that serve as habitats for diverse communities of reef-associated fishes. Deep-reef fish communities are taxonomically and ecologically distinct from those on shallow reefs, but like those on shallow reefs, they are home to a species-rich assemblage of small, cryptobenthic reef fishes, including many species from the family Gobiidae (gobies). Here we describe two new species of deep-reef gobies, Varicusprometheussp. nov. and V.roatanensissp. nov., that were collected using the submersible Idabel from rariphotic reefs off the island of Roatan (Honduras) in the Caribbean. The new species are the 11th and 12th species of the genus Varicus, and their placement in the genus is supported by morphological data and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Additionally, we also collected new specimens of the closely-related genus and species Pinnichthysaimoriensis during submersible collections off the islands of Bonaire and St. Eustatius (Netherland Antilles) and included them in this study to expand the current description of that species and document its range extension from Brazil into the Caribbean. Collectively, the two new species of Varicus and new records of P.aimoriensis add to our growing knowledge of cryptobenthic fish diversity on deep reefs of the Caribbean.

A rare spiny-scale pricklefish, Hispidoberyxambagiosus Kotlyar, 1981, is redescribed based on four specimens collected from Taiwan. Their sampling locality represents the northernmost record of the family, which extends the family's distribution from the eastern Indian Ocean and the South China Sea to northeastern Taiwan in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. A detailed description of these specimens and the first description of its sagittal otoliths are provided. In addition, the specimens are compared with other known specimens. Intraspecific variation of some morphological characters are discussed.

The Adriatic brook lamprey, Lampetra zanandreai Vladykov 1955, was described from northeastern Italy. Its distribution is thought to include left tributaries of the River Po and the river basins of the Adriatic Sea from the River Po to the River Isonzo/Soca in Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia. It also shows a geographically isolated distribution in the Potenza River on the Adriatic slope in Central Italy. Lampetra from the Neretva River system in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Moraca River system in Montenegro that were previously identified as L. zanandreai were recently described as a new species Lampetra soljani Tutman, Freyhof, Dulcic, Glamuzina & Geiger 2017 based on morphological data and a genetic distance between the two species of roughly 2.5% in the DNA barcoding gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI). Since DNA barcodes for L. zanandreai are only available for one population from the upper Po River in northwestern Italy, we generated additional COI nucleotide sequence data of this species from Switzerland, northeastern and central Italy comprising near topotypic material and obtained GenBank sequences of the species from Slovenia to better assess the evolutionary history of the two brook lamprey species in the river basins of the Adriatic Sea. Our data show a low sequence divergence of <1% between L. zanandreai from Switzerland, northeastern and central Italy and Slovenia and the Balkan species L. soljani. However, members of the population previously identified as 'L. zanandreai' from northwest Italy are genetically highly divergent from those of L. zanandreai and likely belong to an undescribed species, L. sp. 'upper Po'. The presence of a unique and highly divergent brook lamprey lineage in the upper Po River suggests that L. zanandreai and Lampetra sp. 'upper Po' may have evolved in separate paleo drainages during the formation of the modern Po Valley subsequent to marine inundations in the Pliocene.

This article contains the data on the Length-weight relationship (LWR) parameters play a crucial role in fisheries management, particularly in fish stock monitoring methods like fish visual census, where biomass estimation relies on the measurement of individual fish lengths in situ. Localized LWR parameters provide more accurate assessments of local fish stocks due to the influence of environmental conditions, which vary across different locations. In this study, we present the LWR parameters for 161 species belonging to 60 genera and 21 families of commercially important coral reef-associated fishes found in the waters surrounding the Tawi-Tawi islands in Southern Philippines. Among the families with at least 10 species recorded were the Serranidae or groupers (24 species), Lutjanidae or snappers (17 species), Nemipteridae or coral breams (14 species), Acanthuridae or surgeonfishes (12 species), Carangidae or jacks (12 species), Scaridae or parrotfishes (12 species), and Siganidae or rabbitfishes (10 species). Approximately 30% or 48 species exhibited a negative allometric growth pattern (b < 3), indicating that these species tend to become more slender as they increase in length. Conversely, around 14% or 23 species displayed a positive growth type (b > 3), where the fish becomes heavier as they increase in length. The majority of the species, accounting for 56% or 90 species, demonstrated an isometric growth pattern (b = 3), where the growth rate for weight and length is proportional. The LWR analysis yielded a coefficient of determination (r2) with an average value of 0.9553, indicating highly significant relationships between length and weight for all species studied (P < 0.001). Furthermore, this study unveiled new total length records for 27 species. Additionally, 73 species represent the first LWR records for marine fishes in the Philippines.

To analyze the differences between different-sized Acipenser dabryanus, we randomly selected 600 3-month-old A. dabryanus juveniles. Four months later, the blood and white muscle of these fish were analyzed. The results showed no significant difference in the length-weight relationship (LWR) b value between the large and small A. dabryanus. The levels of serum growth hormone (gh) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (igf1) in the large A. dabryanus were significantly lower than those in the small, whereas the activity levels of Total superoxide dismutase (T-sod) and catalase (cat) were opposite to the results of gh and igf1. A total of 212 and 245 metabolites showed significant changes in the positive and negative polarity mode, respectively. Among 3,308 proteins identified, 69 proteins showed upregulated expression, and 185 proteins showed downregulated expression. These results indicated that the growth advantage of A. dabryanus was closely related to glycolysis, protein synthesis, and antioxidant function.

The gibberfish Gibberichthyslatifrons is recorded for the first time from southwestern Taiwan, northern South China Sea, based on the collection of seven adults and subadults from the Dong-gang fish market, Pingtung. These specimens represent the northernmost extent of the adult range of the species, and they fill a distributional gap in the western Pacific Ocean. Our findings suggest that a population of the species has become recently established in the region. Detailed descriptions, otolith morphology, and fresh coloration are provided with comments on the morphological characteristics of the genus.

Trade restrictions for endangered elasmobranch species exist to disincentivise their exploitation and curb their declines. However, trade monitoring is challenging due to product variety and the complexity of import/export routes. We investigate the use of a portable, universal, DNA-based tool which would greatly facilitate in-situ monitoring. We collected shark and ray samples across the Island of Java, Indonesia, and selected 28 commonly encountered species (including 22 CITES-listed species) to test a recently developed real-time PCR single-assay originally developed for screening bony fish. In the absence of a bespoke elasmobranch identification online platform in the original FASTFISH-ID model, we employed a deep learning algorithm to recognize species based on DNA melt-curve signatures. By combining visual and machine-learning assignment methods, we distinguished 25/28 species, 20 of which were CITES-listed. With further refinement, this method can improve monitoring of the elasmobranch trade worldwide, without a lab or species-specific assays.

Two specimens representing the first known adults of Lestidiopsindopacificus (Ege, 1953) are reported and described from Taiwan, and the validity and generic assignment of this species are confirmed. The origin of the pelvic fin directly below the dorsal-fin base shows that L.indopacificus belongs to the L.mirabilis species complex. It can be separated from its congeners by the position of the nostrils above the posterior end of the maxilla, the light body color with unevenly distributed melanophores in adults, and a distinct combination of meristic values and other morphological characteristics. New geographic records are reported for the two other current members of this species complex, L.mirabilis (Ege, 1933) and L.extremus (Ege, 1953). The diagnostic features that separate these three very similar species are discussed.

A new labrid fish, Terelabrus toretore sp. nov., the fifth species within the genus, is herein described from two specimens collected at a depth of 140 m from a mesophotic coral ecosystem in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Terelabrus toretore sp. nov. is characterized by having 43-44 scaled rows in longitudinal series; 42 pored lateral-line scales; 5+10 gill rakers; 10 scale rows below the lateral line; 8 posterior branches on the main supratemporal sensory canal; a relatively long snout (snout length 9.6-9.7% SL), and a coloration consisting of a yellow caudal fin and a wide, red, mid-lateral stripe with no blotching, the space above which is white anteriorly, becoming predominantly yellow from beneath the dorsal fin to the caudal peduncle. In addition to describing this new species, we document the first record of Terelabrus rubrovittatus from the Republic of Marshall Islands, and the first record of Terelabrus zonalis from Australia, along with the first description of its coloration. We present a molecular phylogeny of the genus based upon mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) DNA sequences.

Background: The size of Dunkleosteus and other late Devonian arthrodire placoderms has been a persistent problem in paleontology. The bony head and thoracic armor of these animals are typically the only elements preserved in the fossil record, with the rest of the body being lost during fossilization. Accurate length estimates of arthrodires are critical for reconstructing the paleobiology of these taxa and Devonian paleoecology more generally. Lengths of 5.3-8.8 m were proposed for Dunkleosteus based on allometric relationships between upper jaw perimeter and total length in extant large-bodied sharks. However, these methods were not statistically evaluated to determine if allometric relationships between body size and mouth size in sharks reliably predicted size in arthrodires. Several smaller arthrodire taxa are known from relatively complete remains, and can be used as independent case studies to test the accuracy of these methods. Results: Length estimates for Dunkleosteus are evaluated through an examination of mouth proportions in complete arthrodires and fishes more generally. Currently accepted lengths of 5.3-8.8 m for D. terrelli are mathematically and biologically unlikely for three major reasons: (1) Arthrodires have larger mouths than sharks at similar body sizes. (2) upper jaw perimeter and mouth width produce extreme overestimates of body size (at least twice the actual value) in arthrodires known from complete remains. (3) Reconstructing Dunkleosteus using lengths predicted by upper jaw perimeter results in highly unusual body proportions, including extremely small, shrunken heads and hyper-anguilliform body plans, not seen in complete arthrodires or fishes more generally. Conclusions: Length estimates for arthrodires based on the mouth dimensions of extant sharks are not reliable. Arthrodires have proportionally larger mouths than sharks, more similar to catfishes (Siluriformes). The disproportionately large mouths of arthrodires suggest these animals may have consumed larger prey relative to their body size than extant macropredatory sharks, and thus the paleobiology and paleoecology of these two groups may not have been exactly analogous within their respective ecosystems.

With the rapid expansion of transcriptome studies in many fishes, a great number of RNA-seq data have been published, allowing for a more systematic understanding of the general profiles and details of gene expression in fish. FishGET is dedicated to gathering and curating fish RNA-seq data to discover more new RNAs, including mRNA and lncRNA, thereby getting a more complete reference transcriptome and providing more comprehensive and accurate transcriptome annotations. We obtained a total of 1362 RNA-seq paired-end data of 8 fishes from 97 different studies, and then we performed transcript assembly, meta-assembly, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), functional annotations, neighbor location annotation, lncRNA type annotation, homology annotation. To promote research into fish genes at the transcriptional level, we developed a user-friendly web interface that allows users to view all information and makes use of multiple types of dynamic interactive visualization services.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is the principal species of inland-farmed fish in the Western hemisphere. Recently, we diagnosed in farmed rainbow trout a disease in which the hallmark is granulomatous-like hepatitis. No biotic agents could be isolated from lesions. Still, unbiased high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analyses revealed the presence of a novel piscine nidovirus that we named "Trout Granulomatous Virus" (TGV). TGV genome (28,767 nucleotides long) is predicted to encode non-structural (1a and 1 ab) and structural (S, M, and N) proteins that resemble proteins of other known piscine nidoviruses. High loads of TGV transcripts were detected by quantitative RT-PCR in diseased fish and visualized in hepatic granulomatous sites by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed coronavirus-like particles in these lesions. Together, these analyses corroborated the association of TGV with the lesions. The identification and detection of TGV provide means to control TGV spread in trout populations.

Sustained elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to be essential for regeneration in many organisms. This has been shown primarily via the use of pharmacological inhibitors targeting the family of NADPH oxidases (NOXes). To identify the specific NOXes involved in ROS production during adult caudal fin regeneration in zebrafish, we generated nox mutants for duox, nox5 and cyba (a key subunit of NOXes 1-4) and crossed these lines with a transgenic line ubiquitously expressing HyPer, which permits the measurement of ROS levels. Homozygous duox mutants had the greatest effect on ROS levels and rate of fin regeneration among the single mutants. However, duox:cyba double mutants showed a greater effect on fin regeneration than the single duox mutants, suggesting that Nox1-4 also play a role during regeneration. This work also serendipitously found that ROS levels in amputated adult zebrafish fins oscillate with a circadian rhythm.
