RESUMO

Clinical training plays a fundamental role in nursing students' acquisition of professional capabilities. This study aimed to explore the perceived challenges nursing students face during clinical training. An explorative cross-sectional study was applied. A proportionate, stratified, random sample was enrolled in the study with inclusive criteria, including nursing students (2nd - 4th year) and interns who attended their internship in regional hospitals. A validated electronic questionnaire was used for data collection, which consisted of three sections and 29 items. The section that focused on the difficulties experienced by nursing students during their practical training included six elements: teachers, healthcare professionals, the students themselves, tasks, time management, and the location of the training. Another section inquired about the students' perspectives on the benefits of clinical training. A three-point "Likert scale" was applied. The findings indicated that mild (24%), moderate (62%), and severe (14%) degree of challenges were perceived by the study participants. The mean score for the total challenges during clinical training was 2.00 ± 0.28, and there were variations in the perceived challenges among grade levels. In conclusion, there are variations in the perceived challenges during clinical training among different grade levels. These challenges were related to teachers, health workers, the students, tasks, the time, and the place. Enhancing the nursing curricula alignment with practical training objectives is recommended, focusing on the development of technical and interpersonal skills with appropriate guidance, alongside positive clinical settings to help nursing students learn and boost their confidence in their approach.

Introduction: Prospective research in Health Sciences and Sports Sciences warns of the need to design and implement educational program at the different stages of human development, that promote emotional competences, interpersonal competences, an adequate level of healthy physical activity as well as adherence to the Mediterranean diet and a more active lifestyle on a physical and social level. The main objective of the study was to design an intervention program on intra-and interpersonal competences together with emotional education, nutritional education and healthy physical activity, called 'RegulACTION'. Methods: The preliminary study sample consisted of 11 participants aged 21-28 years (M = 5.00, SD = 8.76) (8 female and 3 males) university students. An ad hoc questionnaire was elaborated to evaluate the participant's perception of the usefulness of the 'RegulACTION' experience and a semi-structured interview of 5 questions to assess their perception, identification of their emotions, awareness of their cognitions, emotions and behaviors in the different areas of their lives. Results: The descriptive results show that the participants are receptive to continuing training in the regulation of cognitions (thoughts) and emotions to increase their satisfaction in different areas of their lives. Regarding the qualitative results, the participants' perception, collected verbatim, is that they feel the need to apply the knowledge about personal and social emotions, as well as healthy behavior in terms of nutrition and exercise, in their daily lives. Discussion: The 'RegulACTION' program is designed based on the assessment of the prevalence of mental illness in the young adult and adult population, in line with the literature review in the area of knowledge of the theory of emotions, motivational theories and on the occasion of the development of a workshop organized.

BACKGROUND: Being the professional membership body for pharmacists in Jordan, the Jordan Pharmacists Association (JPA) took the initiative to establish a training centre for practising pharmacists. This study aims to identify the self-assessed training priorities of community pharmacists in Jordan. METHODS: In the period between August and October 2022, an online self-administered questionnaire was distributed using a variety of participants' identification and recruitment approaches. The questionnaire targeted currently practising community pharmacists. Data were analysed descriptively and inferentially. RESULTS: In total, 470 community pharmacists participated in this study. Of 470 participants, 307 (65.3%) were employees, of which 206 were full-time employees. Results showed that only 97 (21%) had access to an in-house training programme or scheme. Self-assessment of training needs highlighted differences between the three competencies clusters. While administrative and managerial skills and competencies were more frequently prioritised on average than the other two clusters, interpersonal and communication skills were needed the least. Evidence showed a significant difference between female and male participants regarding the need for training addressing maternity and early childhood health training issues. Lastly, the role-based comparison showed that, compared to pharmacy owners, employees had a significantly higher need for training related to bookkeeping and taxation returns preparation and how to handle and manage records of narcotic and controlled medicines. CONCLUSIONS: If training and development programmes are tailored to address specific needs in administrative, clinical, and interpersonal competencies, community pharmacists have the potential to enhance public health, expand their role, provide patient-centred care, and support the national healthcare system.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-doctoral dental programs must provide opportunities for students to become proficient in self-assessment, communication skills, health literacy, and cultural competence, essential for independent unsupervised practice. This study aimed to assess how student learning through a classroom education service-learning program addresses the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards 2-11 and 2-17; specifically through the examination of self-assessment, communication skills, health literacy, and cultural competence. METHODS: This 2022 retrospective mixed methods cohort study examined unstructured faculty comments on drafted lesson plans and structured evaluations of classroom education service-learning rehearsal sessions. A random sample of faculty comments from three academic years, 2018, 2019, and 2020, were deidentified and analyzed by five researchers for emerging themes using NVivo. Quantitative data from rehearsal presentations were analyzed with descriptive statistics to assess the concordance of self and faculty feedback on specific evaluation criteria. RESULTS: Six major themes from faculty lesson plan feedback emerged: knowledge, professionalism, communication, presentation skills, cultural competence, and program logistics. Concordance between faculty feedback and student self-assessment ranged from 83% to 92.4% across all evaluation criteria over the 3 years: spoke clearly and confidently at the right pace, provided accurate dental terminology and facts, used grade-appropriate language, provided clear instructions to follow, appeared enthusiastic throughout the rehearsal presentation, and designed a well thought out lesson plan that will engage children for the entire presentation. CONCLUSION: Findings support the classroom education service-learning program as a framework to provide opportunities for student self-assessment and feedback on communication skills, health literacy, and cultural competence aligned with CODA standards 2-11 and 2-17.

OBJECTIVES: The therapist-facilitative interpersonal skills (FIS) has shown to predict therapy outcomes, demonstrating that high FIS therapists are more effective than low FIS therapists. There is a need for more insight into the variability in strengths and weaknesses in therapist skills. This study investigates whether a revised and extended FIS-scoring leads to more differentiation in measuring therapists' interpersonal skills. Furthermore, we explorative examine whether subgroups of therapists can be distinguished in terms of differences in their interpersonal responses. METHOD: Using secondary data analysis, 93 therapists were exposed to seven FIS-clips. Responses of therapists using the original and the extended FIS scoring were rated. RESULTS: Three factors were found on the extended FIS scoring distinguishing supportive, expressive, and persuasive interpersonal responses of therapists. A latent profile analysis enlightened the presence of six subgroups of therapists. CONCLUSION: Using the revised and extended FIS-scoring contributes to our understanding of the role of interpersonal skills in the therapeutic setting by unraveling the question what works for whom.

RESUMO

Teleconsultation is a remote health consultation using information and communication technologies. There are different modalities and specific practical and communication skills are required. Notwithstanding its prominence in Spain, there is little evidence on teleconsultation. This article explores the applicability, barriers, facilitators and future challenges of teleconsultation. While it has the potential to improve access to healthcare, as well as save time and costs for both patients and healthcare professionals, it faces a number of challenges such as the digital divide and resistance to change. To address new challenges and overcome obstacles, it is crucial to gain the trust of patients and professionals. Improving training in the skills required to optimize their use is also essential. Future research should aim to provide robust evidence regarding safety and cost-effectiveness to ensure successful implementation.

RESUMO

Nurses have to be aware of their personal responsibility to demonstrate effective leadership and thereby contribute to safe and effective patient care. One of the primary skills that nurses can use to become effective leaders is communication. This article explores how communication is a vital tool in enabling nurse leaders to motivate their team members and advocate for patients. The author details some of the essential communication skills that nurses require if they are to promote person-centred care and explores the often-neglected areas of non-verbal and written communication. By possessing a full range of communication skills, nurses can empower themselves to lead clinical teams and advocate for patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the impact of a telehealth rotation on the perceived benefits and challenges of telehealth use among third-year dental students at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM). METHODS: A newly implemented weeklong telehealth rotation at CDM engaged all 95 third-year dental students from the 2022 graduating class through assigned readings and virtual interaction with patients. The telehealth rotation involves virtual visits with patients for screening and triage. An ongoing retrospective assessment of the students' post-rotation evaluation was analyzed qualitatively to identify emerging themes and was coded to describe students' attitudes and beliefs about telehealth. RESULTS: Students reported that the greatest benefit of telehealth is logistical convenience, while the greatest challenge to telehealth is related to the use of technology. After the telehealth rotation, students reported improvement in their clinically relevant skills and knowledge, including patient education, facilitating access to care, and communication skills. CONCLUSIONS: The skills reported by students as the most important learning takeaway from the telehealth rotation are applicable to many aspects of care delivery, beyond the scope of telehealth. The incorporation of telehealth education into dental curricula allows students to improve essential clinically relevant skills and knowledge beyond the procedural skills emphasized during in-person patient appointments.

The fundamental role of vision during development and the nurturing role of early intersubjectivity have enabled the Robert Hollman Foundation to develop an early intervention program providing holistic support to visually impaired children and their families, where fostering parent-infant interactions is at the heart of our care. The aim of this study is to understand how parents perceive this approach. It is an eleven-year retrospective study of children following the Robert Hollman Foundation's early intervention program, in which parents' (n = 1086) perceptions of quality of care were measured through the administration of a specifically designed 4-point scale questionnaire. Annual longitudinal trends of parents' perceptions were calculated for every single response. Parents reported a very high satisfaction value in 21/23 questions (Mean > 3.7 out of a maximum score of 4, with the highest scores in human and soft skills of professionals) with a statistically positive trend (p < 0.05), throughout the period considered. Our core approach, based on an individualized nurturing relational support, has been appreciated and confirmed by the high satisfaction reported in the questionnaires by parents of children with visual impairment. We therefore hypothesize that parent-infant relationship-based and individualized approaches may help parents achieve better health, well-being, and quality of daily life for their children.

Effective communication in the emergency department (ED) is vital for ensuring safe patient care and supporting optimal patient outcomes and satisfaction. However, such settings are often noisy, fast paced and unpredictable, which can make nurse-patient communication challenging. Effective communication requires the appropriate knowledge and skills underpinned by clarity, mutual understanding, respect and empathy. However, maximising nurse-patient communication requires various practical and strategic measures, ranging from addressing the environmental challenges of the ED and meeting patients' individual communication needs, to implementing quality control measures and supporting mentorship, reflection and education in practice. This article offers an overview of some of the practical and strategic measures nurses of all levels and experience can apply to maximise nurse-patient communication in the ED.

RESUMO

The Provider Awareness and Cultural dexterity Toolkit for Surgeons (PACTS) curriculum was developed to improve surgical resident cultural dexterity, with the goal of promoting health equity by developing cognitive skills to adapt to individual patients' needs to ensure personal, patient-centered surgical care through structured educational interventions for surgical residents. Funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH)'s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, PACTS addresses surgical disparities in patient care by incorporating varied educational interventions, with investigation of both traditional and nontraditional educational outcomes such as patient-reported and clinical outcomes, across multiple hospitals and regions. The unique attributes of this multicenter, multiphased research trial will not only impact future surgical education research, but hopefully improve how surgeons learn nontechnical skills that modernize surgical culture and surgical care. The present perspective piece serves as an introduction to this multifaceted surgical education trial, highlighting the rationale for the study and critical curricular components such as key stakeholders from multiple institutions, multimodal learning and feedback, and diverse educational outcomes.

The number of primary care physicians in the United States is dwindling rapidly, and osteopathic medical schools are embracing the challenge of leading students toward a career in primary care to meet this need. In recent years, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum in medical education has emerged as a patient-centered, social-justice-focused methodology. The unique format of PBL centered around patient cases allows learning through community-based medicine, promoting medical graduates' entry into primary care. Through exploring the literature on this topic, the research question posed for this review is as follows: How have the skills gained in PBL been effectively preparing medical students to become community service-oriented primary care physicians, and how can we qualitatively and quantitatively assess a learner's preparedness to engage in primary care work? The variables studied were board licensing examination scores, clinical competence, and interpersonal skills, all of which emerged as common ways to assess learners' preparedness to work in primary care. The methodology of this literature review was organized using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses flowchart to describe how articles were selected and synthesized to evaluate the variables. The results revealed the variables to be consistent strengths of PBL students, particularly clinical competence, and interpersonal skills, both of which are key in working in primary care and any clinical specialty. Since early in its implementation, literature has demonstrated the tendencies of PBL students to be interested in and later work in primary care, though little follow-up has been done recently. The question of why this phenomenon exists was largely answered by our literature review. In conclusion, through our analysis of the existing literature, the authors demonstrated that the PBL curriculum helps foster students' desire to serve patients. Limitations of the literature included small sample sizes, heterogeneous analysis methods, limited inclusion of qualitative assessment of student progress, and limited existing data on the prevalence of PBL in medical schools, as well as the entrance of PBL graduates into primary care careers.

We investigated relationships between emotional intelligence, micro expression recognition and professional performance in two pre-registered cross-sectional studies. Study 1 (N = 86) explored the relationship between micro expression recognition, emotional intelligence and self-reported subjective professional performance and interpersonal skills in an online sample. Study 2 (N = 125) also utilized an online study to determine if there are differences in micro expression recognition and emotional intelligence between two employment sectors proposed to involve differing levels of 'emotional labor', namely software development and retail. Results of Study 1 showed a positive association between emotional intelligence and micro expression recognition. There were no associations of micro expression recognition with interpersonal skills or professional performance. Study 2 replicated the association between emotional intelligence and micro expression recognition, but provided no evidence for differences in emotional intelligence between retail and software development workers. Retail workers showed marginally higher scores on micro expression recognition. There was also no association of micro expression recognition with self-estimated professional performance, regardless of the participants' profession. The findings indicate that micro expression recognition may be closely related to emotional intelligence, but that it may also have a separate component, which may differ across different professions.

OBJECTIVE: Facilitative interpersonal skills (FIS) are a promising variable to explain the so-called therapist effect. We aimed to investigate associations between observer-rated interpersonal skills and self-reported personal characteristics of future therapists. METHOD: In this cross-sectional observational study, psychology students and trainee therapists completed self-report personality and sociodemographic questionnaires as well as the FIS Performance Task (German version, observer-rated). Mixed multilevel model analysis was conducted with FIS total mean score (mean value of 312 individual ratings [13 video-clips, 8 FIS-items, 3 raters]) as dependent variable, therapist ID and FIS clip ID as random effects and 15 therapist variables as fixed effects. RESULTS: In the present sample consisting of 177 participants (age: M = 29.8 years (SD = 7.3), [18,59]; 79.1% female, 20.9% male) greater therapists' experience level, male gender and lower levels of alexithymia were predictive for higher FIS score when statistically controlling for other therapist variables in the model. Age, self-reported childhood maltreatment, attachment style, emotion regulation and self-concept variables turned out to be unrelated. CONCLUSION: The results can inform psychotherapy training programs. They specifically support the importance of addressing therapists' potential difficulties in recognizing and verbalizing emotions. This is in line with theoretical literature on alliance ruptures and premises of the Alliance-focused training.

Nurses' competence and confidence in raising concerns with senior clinicians is integral to patient safety and the quality of patient care. If nurses do not speak up when needed it can contribute to incidences of failure to rescue. There are many barriers to nurses speaking up in busy emergency departments and complex major trauma patient cases. Assessment and communication tools such as the SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) approach and communication techniques such as graded assertiveness can help to overcome some of these barriers. This article uses a case study to discuss how nurses can respectfully but efficiently escalate their concerns to the trauma team leader. It describes barriers to nurses speaking up and tools that can support nurses to speak up, with a focus on graded assertiveness.

Background: Interpersonal characteristics of gifted adolescents is important because of the potential influence on individuals' psychological health and future professional success. Understanding the interpersonal characteristics requires valid and reliable measures. This study attempted to explicitly describe the application of Rasch analysis in the validation and development process of an existing measure of interpersonal skills among gifted adolescent in Ohio. Methods: We extensively evaluated the psychometric properties of the 40-item scale measuring the interpersonal competence of adolescents among the gifted population in Ohio (N = 127) using Rasch analysis. Multiple aspects of reliability and validity were tested including dimensionality, rating scale functioning, and fit statistics. Results: The internal consistency reliability of the scale was confirmed with an adequate fit to the Rasch model. However, the scale demonstrates relatively poor performance in terms of unidimensionality with our sample. Also, the rating scale categories were confusing given that our sample could not effectively distinguish some adjacent categories. Corresponding refinements have been made and the revised scale formed a meaningful linear progression with improved performance on unidimensionality, rating scale functioning, and fit statistics. Conclusion: The study provided evidence that the construct of interpersonal skills is measurable. Based upon the original Interpersonal Competence Questionnaires consists of 40 items, the author extracted and piloted a refined measure consisting of 31 items that performed a meaningful, theoretically consistent linear progression measure that could be used to measure the level of interpersonal skills of gifted children.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess, improve and re-assess Emotional Intelligence (EI) in a group of junior and senior surgeons in a real-world setting. DESIGN: This was a mixed methods study. An EI education program was delivered through a series of webinars. The program drew from the central concepts of emotional intelligence: Motivation, empathy, social skills, self-knowledge, and self-control. There was also a component of professional development. EI assessment was performed pre- and post-intervention using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and a series of targeted questions. Qualitative assessment was performed by means of structured interviews examining uptake in techniques, understanding of EI, and its effect on personal and professional life. SETTING: The Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colorectal Surgery administers a 2-year bi-national training program in teaching hospitals in Australia and New Zealand and runs a series of educational webinars throughout the training program. The "EI series" was part of this educational program. PARTICIPANTS: Webinars were attended by 35 junior surgeons and 8 senior surgeons RESULTS: Self-perceived knowledge and use of EI increased from a mean of 3.6 to 6.5 (p<0.0001). There was a significant difference between experiential (94) and strategic (101) scores (p=0.005). There was a nonsignificant improvement (98.04-100.6, p=0.16), in the pre-post MSCEIT among the junior surgeons and no change for senior surgeons. Seventy-eight percent (25/32) of surgeons interviewed reported using any new EI strategies. Seventy-five percent actively stopped and considered what other people in a clinical scenario may be thinking; 78% commenced metacognition; 81% practiced the process of self-regulation; 66% had begun to recognise and use emotions as data; and, 47% had actively practiced the process of self-distancing CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the feasibility and utility of delivering EI training in an online format to a group of time-poor surgeons in a real-world setting.
