OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of death worldwide. Diet plays an important role among many risk factors for CVDs. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between carbohydrate quality index (CQI) and conventional risk factors of CVDs in Iranian adults. RESULTS: A higher CQI was related to a higher intake of energy, fiber, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and dairy products. Additionally, a significant negative association was observed between CQI and triglycerides (TG) (odds ratio (OR) = 0.85; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.73-0.98, highest versus the lowest tertile, p for trend = 0.026) and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.75-0.96, highest versus the lowest tertile, p for trend = 0.012). No significant correlation was shown between CQI and other cardiovascular risk factors. The findings indicate that the CQI is inversely associated with TG and non-HDL-C. Further studies are proposed to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of treatment on the quality of life of patients with chronic oral mucosal diseases. Specifically, the study aimed to determine how treatment affects the changes in the quality of life of these patients. METHODS: This descriptive study involved 220 patients diagnosed with chronic oral mucosal lesions. Data were collected using the Chronic Oral Mucosal Disease Questionnaire, validated for use in Persian/Farsi. The study population was selected through convenience sampling. Data analysis employed descriptive statistical methods, including frequency and percentage distribution tables, graphs, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Additionally, confidence intervals were utilized for the studied ratios and indices. RESULTS: Among the study population, 129 (58.6%) were male and 91 (41.4%) were female. The mean quality of life, as assessed by the utilized questionnaire, was 61.9 ± 13.2. The results indicated that females and unemployed individuals reported lower quality of life compared to males and employed individuals, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the population studied the quality of life of patients with chronic mucous membrane diseases was influenced by various factors, including gender, income, employment, and place of residence.

Rock typing techniques have relied on either electrical or hydraulic properties. The study introduces a novel approach for reservoir rock typing, the hydraulic-electric index (HEI), which combines the strengths of traditional electrical and hydraulic rock typing methods to characterize carbonate reservoirs more accurately. By normalizing the ratio of permeability and formation resistivity factor (K/FRF) with respect to porosity, the HEI method is applied to two datasets of carbonate core samples: dataset 1 consists of 112 carbonate core samples from the Tensleep formation in the Bighorn basin of Wyoming and Montana, and dataset 2 includes 81 carbonate core samples from the Asmari formation in the south-west of Iran. Statistical analysis confirms the effectiveness of the HEI in predicting permeability, with high determination coefficients for both datasets (resulting in determination coefficients (R2) of 0.965 and 0.904 for dataset 1 and dataset 2, respectively). The results classify the rock samples into distinct rock types, nine rock types for dataset 1 and four rock types for dataset 2, and demonstrate the HEI ability to capture the relationship between hydraulic conductivity and electrical resistivity in carbonate reservoir rocks. Applying the HEI method to the validation dataset yielded highly accurate permeability predictions, with average of determination coefficients of 0.883 and 0.859 for dataset 1 and dataset 2, respectively. Validation of the HEI method further confirms (20% of the dataset was set aside for validation, while the remaining 80% was used for the rock typing approach (5 folds)) its accuracy in predicting permeability, highlighting its robust predictive capacity for estimating permeability in carbonate reservoirs.

The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Cenopalpus irani (Trombidiformes: Tenuipalpidae), known as the Iranian false spider mite, following the commodity risk assessment of Malus domestica plants from Türkiye, in which C. irani was identified as a pest of possible concern for the territory of the European Union (EU). The pest is only known to be present in Iran and Türkiye and has not been reported from the EU. The mite primarily feeds on Rosaceae plants but is considered polyphagous. Important crops of the EU that are hosts of C. irani include apples (Malus domestica), pears (Pyrus communis) and figs (Ficus carica). Plants for planting and fruits provide potential pathways for entry into the EU. Host availability and climate suitability in southern EU countries would most probably allow this species to successfully establish and spread. This mite is not listed in Annex II of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/2072. Phytosanitary measures are available to reduce the likelihood of entry and spread of this species into the EU. The mite C. irani satisfies the criteria that are within the remit of EFSA to assess for it to be regarded as a potential Union quarantine pest, although there is a key uncertainty over the likelihood and magnitude of impact.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide each year. In Iran, an estimated 9 out of every 100,000 individuals experience traumatic SCI occurrences. Long-term disabilities and comorbidities stemming from SCI often necessitate multiple therapeutic interventions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the morbidity in Iranian SCI patients. In this study, a four-step process was used to select, extract, analyze, and synthesize relevant literature. The search covered 750 records from five databases, resulting in 25 articles included in the review. These articles, published between 2000 and 2023, utilized cross-sectional, qualitative, or cohort designs. The findings explored the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of comorbidities associated with SCI, categorized into four themes: physical, sexual, psychological, and metabolic morbidity. Physical morbidity refers to medical conditions or complications affecting body functions or structures in SCI patients. The most frequently reported cases include pressure ulcers, pain, osteoporosis, fractures, impaired pulmonary function, renal failure, and obesity. Metabolic morbidity includes conditions such as vitamin D deficiency and cardiometabolic risk factors. Psychological morbidity encompasses depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders. Sexual morbidity refers to conditions or complications affecting the sexual function or satisfaction of SCI patients. This narrative literature review offers a comprehensive examination of various aspects of SCI in Iranian patients. The review identifies numerous challenges and difficulties faced by SCI patients while also highlighting protective factors that can improve their well-being. Additionally, the review acknowledges gaps and limitations within the current literature and suggests possible avenues for future research.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with considerable genetic heterogeneity. The disorder is clinically diagnosed based on DSM-5 criteria, featuring deficits in social communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive behaviours. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on four individuals with ASD from two multiplex families (MPX), where more than one individual is affected, to identify potential single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and structural variants (SVs) in coding and non-coding regions. A rigorous bioinformatics pipeline was employed for variant detection, followed by segregation analysis. Our investigation revealed an unreported splicing variant in the DYRK1A gene (c.-77 + 2T > C; IVS1 + 2T > C; NM_001396.5), in heterozygote form in two affected children in one of the families (family B), which was absent in the healthy parents and siblings. This finding suggests the presence of gonadal mosaicism in one of the parents, representing the first documented instance of such inheritance for a variant in the DYRK1A gene associated with ASD. Furthermore, we identified a 50 bp deletion in intron 9 of the DLG2 gene in two affected patients from the same family, confirmed by PCR and Sanger sequencing. In Family A, we identified potential candidate variants associated with ASD shared by the two patients. These findings enhance our understanding of the genetic landscape of ASD, particularly in MPX families, and highlight the utility of WGS in uncovering novel genetic contributions to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Natural products' inflammatory and antioxidant properties have crucial roles in tissue repair and regeneration. This study aimed to investigate HPLC analysis, antioxidant activity, and wound-healing effect of Echium amoenum (EA) on rats. The EA was analysed for the determination of shikonin a derivative of naphthoquinone. In the wound healing assessment, forty Wistar rats were divided into five groups that were receiving the cream base, normal saline (NS), 1% silver sulfadiazine (SSD), and 5 and 10% EA cream (EAC). Shikonin was found in the EA extract. The average wound area on the 10th day was 0.71 ± 0.01, 0.86 ± 0.13, 0.58 ± 0.08, 0.53 ± 0.03 and 0.43 ± 0.04 cm2 for the cream base, NS, SSD, and 5 and 10% EAC, respectively. The collagen fibres were well formed and horizontally oriented in 5 and 10% EAC groups compared to other groups. EA cream was an effective treatment for wound healing in comparison with SSD.

BACKGROUND: Among the large animals, the heart of sheep is functionally and structurally very similar to the human heart. In research, sheep are used as an animal model to study the process of cardiac disease pathogenesis and treatment. Therefore, determining the normal values of the heart structures of sheep with echocardiography is of particular emphasis. The purpose of the present research is to define the normal echocardiography values of heart in Iranian Shall breed sheep. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 20 healthy Iranian Shall male sheep weighing 30-35 kg and aged 4-6 months, standing echocardiography was done from the right parasternal approach concentrated on the 3rd to 5th intercostal spaces by 2.5-5 MHz phased array transducer in the longitudinal and transverse views by B-mode, M-mode and Doppler systems. In M-mode echocardiographic, the parameters of interventricular septal, left ventricular internal diameter, left ventricular free wall, right ventricular free wall and right ventricular internal diameter in diastole and systole as well as end point septal separation, ejection fraction (EF) slope, aortic root diameter, left atrial appendage, left atrial diameter/aortic valve diameter, left ventricular ejection time, fractional shortening, end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, EF, stroke volume and cardiac output and in pulsed-wave spectral Doppler echocardiographic, the parameters of mitral valve maximum velocity (Vmax), mitral valve mean velocity (Vmean), mitral valve maximum pressure gradient (PGmax), mitral valve mean pressure gradient (PGmean), mitral valve velocity time integral (VTI), mitral valve E-wave (MV-E), MV-E pressure gradient, mitral valve A-wave (MV-A), MV-A pressure gradient, aortic Vmax, aortic valve Vmean, aortic valve PGmax, aortic valve PGmean, aortic valve VTI, left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT)-Vmax, LVOT-Vmean were measured. RESULTS: All the sheep in this study were healthy and had no signs of heart disease. In this study, the parameters of M-mode and spectral Doppler echocardiographic were assessed and recognized in Iranian Shall sheep. The results demonstrated the parameters of echocardiographic could be dependably determined in Shall sheep which, established normal reference values for these parameters and left ventricular function indices in healthy Shall sheep. These results can be beneficial in appropriate imagination, recognition and measuring cardiac structures. CONCLUSION: This study can be exerted as a reference for the assessment and diagnosis of heart diseases in sheep medicine and human cardiovascular research in sheep experimental models.

Background: Iranian Lizard Leishmania (I.L.L) is a nonpathogenic Leishmania strain. Due to its advantages, several recombinant proteins have been produced in this host. However, I.L.L shows a lower yield of recombinant protein expression compared to other commercial hosts. Considering the role of protease enzymes in protein digestion, we selected cysteine protease B (CPB) to investigate its impact on recombinant protein yield in I.L.L. Methods: we generated gene knockouts by utilizing homologous recombination (HR) and CRISPR methods. To assess the efficacy of the designed construct, we compared the yield of recombinant human factor VII (rhFVII) production between cells transfected with the pLEXSY-hyg2-FVII vector and the CMV-promoter-based construct (pF7cmvneo). Results: The knockout of a single CPB gene allele through the HR method or the complete knockout of all alleles through the CRISPR method led to cell death. This outcome suggests that even the deletion of a single CPB gene allele diminishes the protein to a level insufficient for the survival of I.L.L, indicating a critical dependency on the presence of this protein for the organism's viability. rhFVII exhibited a greater expression yield with the pLEXSY construct compared to the pF7cmvneo construct in I.L.L. The lower expression rate of pF7cmvneo may be influenced by epigenetic factors related to the CPC gene or the RNA polymerase used for the expression of that promoter. Conclusion: Therefore, considering alternative integration targets for CMV-promoter-based constructs and incorporating UTR sequences of I.L.L high-expression proteins in the vector may enhance recombinant protein expression rates.

Background and Objectives: This study assesses the antibiotic susceptibility of vaginal Lactobacillus strains and provides data for determining the prevalence of certain antibiotic resistance genes in the new strains of lactobacilli serving as probiotics and selected from healthy women in northern Iran. Materials and Methods: One hundred premenopausal non-pregnant women in the reproductive age range of 22-50 years participated in this study. The potential probiotic vaginal lactobacilli used in the study included Lactobacillus crispatus (34.2%), Lactobacillus gasseri (26.3%), Lactobacillus johnsonii (10.5%), Lactobacillus acidophilus (15.7%) and Lactobacillus jensenii (13.1%). The phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility of the strains was determined by E test and DNA extraction and PCR were performed to examine the antibiotic resistance genes. Results: 38 potential probiotic vaginal lactobacilli were isolated. All the strains of lactobacilli were resistant to metronidazole and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and all of the strains were susceptible to ampicillin and chloramphenicol antibiotics. The results showed that ermB, ermC, and ermA genes were observed in the strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Metronidazole resistance (nim) gene was also found in one strain of Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus johnsonii. The aminoglycoside resistance (aac6'-aph2″) gene was observed in 8% of the strains. Also, tetM, tetK and tetW genes were found in more than 80% of the Lactobacillus strains. Conclusion: The antimicrobial susceptibility of vaginal lactobacilli is an important criterion for establishing whether or not the organism is a probiotic. A high level of resistance to clinical antibiotics, such as metronidazole and aminoglycosides, was demonstrated. Antibiotic resistant genes also appeared widely in vaginal lactobacilli.

The current study aims to co-encapsulate Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) essential oil (ZEO) and nisin into chitosan nanogel as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agent to enhance the shelf-life of cheese. Chitosan-caffeic acid (CS-CA) nanogel was produced to co-encapsulate Zataria multiflora essential oil and nisin. This nanogel was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The effect of free (TFZN) and encapsulated ZEO-nisin in chitosan nanogel (TCZN) on the chemical and microbiological properties of Iranian white cheese was assessed. The particle size, polydispersity index value (PDI), zeta potential, antioxidant activity, and encapsulation efficiency of the optimal chitosan-ZEO-nisin nanogel were 421.6 nm, 0.343, 34.0 mV, 71.06%-82.69%, and 41.3 ± 0.5%, 0.79 ± 0.06 mg/mL. respectively. FTIR and XRD approved ZEO and nisin entrapment within chitosan nanogel. The chitosan nanogel showed a highly porous surface with an irregular shape. The bioactive compounds of ZEO and nisin decreased the pH changes in cheese. On the 60th day of storage, the acidity of treated samples was significantly lower than that of control. Although the lowest anisidine index value was observed in samples treated with sodium nitrate (NaNO3) (TS), there was no significant difference between this sample and TCZN. The lowest microbial population was observed in TCZN and TS. After 60 days of ripening, Coliforms were not detected in the culture medium of TCZN and TS. The results can contribute to the development of a natural preservative with the potential for application in the dairy industry.

Background: We aimed to investigate two polymorphisms, rs8106922 and rs157580 of TOMM40 in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: In the present case-control research, we collected blood samples from 117 AD patients and 130 controls from Alzheimer's Hospital, residents of Tehran, Iran during the winter 2020 to autumn 2022. Following extraction of DNA, Genotyping of TOMM40 polymorphisms rs8106922 and rs157580 were examined by sequencing and ARMS/PCR approaches. We compared distributions of genotypes in both patient and healthy groups using the Chi-Square test. Results: Regarding rs157580, a statistically significant difference was observed in the GA genotype frequency between patient and healthy groups, in both univariate and multivariate modes with these results that have come respectively, and it can be regarded as a protection factor P<0.05).. No significant difference was observed in the frequency of A and G alleles between patient and healthy groups. Besides, concerning rs8106922, the AG genotype frequency in research groups in both univariate and multivariate cases, with these results that have come respectively was significantly different (P=0.003) & (P=0.009). Regarding GG genotype, a statistically significant difference was observed between the patient and healthy groups in both univariate and multivariate cases, respectively (P=0.419) & (P=0.425). Significant differences were observed in the G allele frequency for rs8106922 in the healthy and patient groups (P=0.007), it can be regarded as a potential protective factor. Conclusion: It is possible to consider the TOMM40 gene as one of the potential genes concerning Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: According to our knowledge, the relationship between dietary patterns such as pro-healthy, pro-vegetarian, and non-healthy dietary patterns and prostate cancer risk has not been clearly investigated in Iranian men. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between adherence to a pro-healthy (PHDI), pro-vegetarian (PDP), and non-healthy dietary indices (NHDI) and the risk of prostate cancer. METHOD: In this matched case-control study, 125 participants (62 cases and 63 hospital-based controls) were enrolled from April to September 2015. Participants' dietary intakes were evaluated using a valid and reliable 160-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary indices calculated based on previous studies. The relationship between dietary indices (PHDI, NHDI and PDP) and prostate cancer risk was assessed using binary regression models. RESULTS: According to adjusted model, significant negative correlations were found between PHDI and PDP with prostate cancer (PHDI: OR = 0.31; 95% CI; 0.11-0.85; P = 0.023 - PDP: OR = 0.34; 95% CI; 0.15-0.75; P = 0.008). Also, a positive association was seen between NHDI and prostate cancer (OR = 3.01; 95% CI; 1.20-7.57; P = 0.019). CONCLUSION: We found that adherence to healthy dietary indices which includes high amounts of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces the risk of prostate cancer. While adherence to a dietary pattern high in red and processed meat, refined grains, and sweetened beverages increases the risk of prostate cancer.

Background: The diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer not only impose significant physical challenges but also deeply affect patients emotionally and psychologically, significantly influencing their overall quality of life. Among the various factors that can positively impact life satisfaction in individuals facing gastrointestinal cancer, spirituality emerges as a crucial aspect. This study aimed to determine the effect of a spiritual intervention on life satisfaction in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with two groups of 85 gastrointestinal cancer patients from two major hospitals in Tehran. The intervention group received spiritual support through social media for six sessions over three weeks to learn how to effectively improve their spiritual state. The control group received routine medical visits and care. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was used before and after the spiritual support in both the intervention and control groups. The research was approved by the institutional ethics committee. Results: In the pre-test stage, there was no significant difference in average life satisfaction between the intervention and control groups (t = 1.887, d = 0.30, p > 0.05). However, positive changes occurred in the post-test stage. Notably, the disparity in average life satisfaction between the intervention and control groups was significant in the post-test stage (t = 13.118, d = 0.95, p < 0.01). Furthermore, the result showed that the changes in life satisfaction in the intervention group were statistically significant (t = 11.854, d = 0.84, p < 0.001). Changes in life satisfaction in the control group were not statistically significant in the pre-test stage compared to the post-test stage (t = 1.113, d = 0.10, p > 0.05). Conclusion: The results can guide health care providers in dealing with the problems of cancer patients. Assessing patients' spiritual needs and empowering them to promote their spiritual recovery and find meaning in their suffering can lead to improved quality of life and satisfaction with holistic care.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a prevalent cancer characterized by its aggressive nature and potential to cause mortality among women. The rising mortality rates and women's inadequate perception of the disease's severity in developing countries highlight the importance of screening using conventional methods and reliable scales. Since the validity and reliability of the breast cancer perception scale (BCPS) have not been established in the Iranian context. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the measurement properties of the BCPS in women residing in Tabriz, Iran. METHODS: The present study comprised a cross-sectional design, encompassing a sample of 372 Iranian women. The participants were selected through a multi-stage cluster random sampling technique conducted over a period spanning from November 2022 to February 2023. The measurement properties of the Iranian version of BCPS were assessed following the guidelines outlined in the COSMIN checklist. This involved conducting various steps, including the translation process, reliability testing (internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and measurement error), and methodological tests for validity (content validity, face validity, construct validity, and hypothesis testing). The study also investigated the factors of responsiveness and interpretability. The presence of floor and ceiling effects was assessed. RESULTS: The internal consistency of the scale was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, yielding a satisfactory value of 0.68. Additionally, McDonald's omega (95% CI) was computed, resulting in a value of 0.70 (0.66 to 0.74). Furthermore, the test-retest reliability was evaluated, revealing a high intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.97 (95% CI: 0.94 to 0.99). The CVI, CVR, and impact scores of the BCPS were determined to be 0.98, 0.95, and 3.70, respectively, indicating favorable levels of content and face validity. To assess construct validity, an examination of the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted on a set of 24 items. This analysis revealed the presence of six distinct factors, which collectively accounted for 52% of the cumulative variance. The fit indices of the validity model (CFI = 0.91, NFI = 0.96, RFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.90, χ2/df = 2.03, RMSEA = 0.055 and SRMR = 0.055) were confirmed during the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The overall score of BCPS exhibited a ceiling effect of 0.3%. The floor effect observed in the overall score (BCPS) was found to be 0.5%. Concerning the validation of the hypothesis, Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.55 was obtained between the BCPS and the QLICP-BR V2.0. This correlation value signifies a statistically significant association. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the minimum important change (MIC) of 3.92 exhibited a higher value compared to the smallest detectable change (SDC) of 3.70, thus suggesting a satisfactory level of response. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained findings suggest that the Iranian version of the BCPS demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties for assessing the perception of breast cancer among Iranian women. Furthermore, it exhibits favorable responsiveness to clinical variations. Consequently, it can serve as a screening instrument for healthcare professionals to comprehend breast cancer and as a reliable tool in research endeavors.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves patients' Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to before surgery. However, based on our knowledge, the improvement in HRQoL after TKA, which depends on various factors, has yet to be investigated compared to healthy people. This study aimed to evaluate the HRQoL of patients compared to healthy people and the factors affecting the HRQoL after TKA. In this matched case-control study (1002 participants), HRQoL in 501 patients who underwent TKA between 2015 and 2022 at Shafa Yahyainan Hospital affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences were compared with 501 healthy controls. HRQoL was evaluated in two parts (before compared to 12 months after TKA and 12 months after TKA compared to the healthy population). The 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate HRQoL 12 months after surgery. The influencing factors on HRQoL were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. No significant difference was observed in the demographic characteristics of the participants in the two groups. The mean overall SF-36 score, 12 months after surgery, significantly improved compared to before surgery (64.21 ± 22.2 vs. 37.55 ± 15.13, p:0.001). The mean total score of SF-36 was statistically similar between the case and control groups (64.21 ± 22.2 VS 72.53 ± 25.3). The multivariate analysis showed that sex, BMI, number of comorbidities, postoperative compliance, and complications were significantly related to the decrease in patients' HRQoL (P < 0.001).TKA can improve the HRQoL except for two subscales of happiness/vitality and physical performance, similar to the healthy population. Female gender, obesity and overweight, comorbidity, bilateral TKA, non-adherence to postoperative physiotherapy, and complications were associated with decreased HRQoL.

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to elucidate the association between HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 alleles and their relative risk contributions to ALL within an Iranian cohort. METHODS: Utilizing a robust case-control design, this research involved 71 ALL patients and 71 age and sex-matched healthy individuals. Genotyping of specified HLA alleles was performed using the advanced PCR-SSP technique. RESULTS: Our findings reveal a marked increase in the prevalence of the HLA-DRB1*04 allele among patients diagnosed with ALL compared to the control group (P<0.027). Conversely, the alleles HLA-A*26 (P=0.025), HLA-A*33 (P=0.020), and HLA-DRB1*03 (P=0.035) were observed at significantly reduced frequencies within the patient population. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight HLA-DRB1*04 as a potential genetic marker for increased susceptibility to ALL, while HLA-A*26, HLA-A*33, and HLA-DRB1*03 emerge as protective factors.

BACKGROUND: Considering the severe and sudden changes in the job conditions of nurses during the covid-19 pandemic, the increase in job tensions during this critical period and its consequences on the quantity and quality of nursing care, this study aims to investigate the job stress of nurses during the covid-19 pandemic and its predictors in Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 nurses in 'Kashan', Iran, who were randomly selected using stratified sampling. Data were collected using two questionnaires on occupational stress and potential related factors. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 16. RESULTS: The results showed that the occupational stress of nurses in Iran was at a medium to high level with a mean and standard deviation of 103.773 ± 15.742 (scale of 34-136). Factors such as satisfaction with physical health, quality of work life, satisfaction with the availability of facilities, sense of coherence, education level, work experience, job burnout, male gender, being native, and workplace were predictors of occupational stress and explained 23.3% of the variance in occupational stress score. The highest contribution was related to satisfaction with physical health. CONCLUSION: Considering the consequences of occupational stress for nurses, it is crucial for health and nursing authorities to take these factors into consideration in policy-making and planning.

The current study aimed to evaluate Y chromosome haplotypes obtained from 1353 unrelated Iranian males using the AmpFlSTRTM YfilerTM kit; 1353 out of the 1353 identified haplotypes were unique. The haplotype diversity (HD) and discriminating capacity (DC) values were 1.00000 and 0.997, respectively. Analysis of genetic distance was performed using molecular variance (AMOVA) and multidimensional scaling plots (MDS), revealing a statistically significant difference between the study population and previous data reported for other Iranian populations and other neighboring countries. The present findings are likely to be useful for forensic casework analyses and kinship investigations.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the genetics of early-onset progressive cerebellar ataxia in Iran, we conducted a study at the Children's Medical Center (CMC), the primary referral center for pediatric disorders in the country, over a three-year period from 2019 to 2022. In this report, we provide the initial findings from the national registry. METHODS: We selected all early-onset patients with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance to assess their phenotype, paraclinical tests, and genotypes. The clinical data encompassed clinical features, the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) scores, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) results, Electrodiagnostic exams (EDX), and biomarker features. Our genetic investigations included single-gene testing, Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). RESULTS: Our study enrolled 162 patients from various geographic regions of our country. Among our subpopulations, we identified known and novel pathogenic variants in 42 genes in 97 families. The overall genetic diagnostic rate was 59.9%. Notably, we observed PLA2G6, ATM, SACS, and SCA variants in 19, 14, 12, and 10 families, respectively. Remarkably, more than 59% of the cases were attributed to pathogenic variants in these genes. CONCLUSIONS: Iran, being at the crossroad of the Middle East, exhibits a highly diverse genetic etiology for autosomal recessive hereditary ataxia. In light of this heterogeneity, the development of preventive strategies and targeted molecular therapeutics becomes crucial. A national guideline for the diagnosis and management of patients with these conditions could significantly aid in advancing healthcare approaches and improving patient outcomes.
