Many group-living animals coordinate social behaviours using contact calls, which can be produced for all group members or targeted at specific individuals. In the disc-winged bat, Thyroptera tricolor, group members use 'inquiry' and 'response' calls to coordinate daily movements into new roosts (furled leaves). Rates of both calls show consistent among-individual variation, but causes of within-individual variation remain unknown. Here, we tested whether disc-winged bats produce more contact calls towards group members with higher kinship or association. In 446 experimental trials, we recorded 139 random within-group pairs of one flying bat (producing inquiry calls for roost searching) and one roosting bat (producing response calls for roost advertising). Using generalized linear mixed-effect models (GLMM), we assessed how response and inquiry calling rates varied by sender, receiver, genetic kinship and co-roosting association rate. Calling rates varied consistently across senders but not by receiver. Response calling was influenced by inquiry calling rates, but neither calling rate was higher when the interacting pair had higher kinship or association. Rather than dyadic calling rates indicating within-group relationships, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that bats produce contact calls to maintain contact with any or all individuals within a group while collectively searching for a new roost site. The sex-biased dispersal and kinship dynamics are important factors shaping the spatial distribution of individuals and are key parameters affecting a variety of ecological and evolutionary processes. Here, we studied the spatial distribution of related individuals within a population of corn mice Calomys musculinus in a seasonal cycle to infer dispersal patterns. The sampling was carried out from spring 2005 to winter 2006 in field borders of intensively managed agroecosystems. Genotyping data from 346 individuals with 9 microsatellites showed spatial genetic structure was weak for males, but not for females. The results indicate a complex spatial kinship dynamic of related females across all seasons. Which, contrary to our expectations, dispersal distances decrease with the increase of the population abundance. Meanwhile, male dispersal distances were greater when population abundance increased and thus the availability of active females. Males disperse greater distances to mate and sire offspring with distant females as a possible inbreeding avoidance mechanism. This study shows that C. musculinus is capable of much greater scattering distances than previously reported and that dispersal occurs fluidly and without barriers across the agroecosystem. The indirect benefit of dispersal on individual fitness could be related to relaxing the competition in the natal area and increasing the mating rate. Our study highlights the value of combining genetic relatedness, fieldwork observations, and behavioral data to estimate dispersal at a fine geographical scale.

OBJECTIVES: We explore the observable outcome in mtDNA diversity of different kinship systems and associated postmarital residence patterns in the archeological record, using simulations at the intrapopulation level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four kinship systems were simulated from a set of variable fertility and mortality scenarios. Initial conditions consisted of six clusters of variable size and a random number of assigned haplotypes, with individuals migrating between groups and reproducing for 15 generations. Each 15-generation span was simulated 500 times to obtain representative intrasite mtDNA diversity distributions for each kinship system. Additional simulations were devised to consider the effect of migration and different rates of adherence to kinship norms. RESULTS: Matrilineal kinship generates low male and female haplotype diversities that are statistically indistinguishable from each other, while female diversity in bilateral kinship with matrilocality is significantly lower than that observed in male diversity. Furthermore, mtDNA diversity generated by patrilineal kinship is very high. The effect of noncompliance with kinship rules is low; migration has a considerable impact on diversity, eventually obscuring the effect of kinship practices. DISCUSSION: The results of the simulations can be applied to ancient mtDNA data from archeological contexts, as exemplified with data from two studies. On a broader scale, the kinship system followed by the sampled population, can lead to either over- or underestimation of mtDNA population diversity. The results of the simulations can be used in the design of inferential frameworks to discern kinship scenarios in the archeological record, based on mtDNA and other types of evidence.

Family honour, protecting and upholding the family name, is central to familism. Yet, it has been somewhat neglected by scholarship on Latin American and Latino families. Familism involves prioritising the family over the individual. Likewise, the family of origin holds particular significance, offering material, social and emotional support, and shaping one's identity, honour and sense of belonging. Heteronormativity and patriarchy portray queer individuals as the causes of family shame. This study examined how family honour, as a component of familism, operates within kin dynamics, specifically focusing on same-sex cohabitation, as this living arrangement serves as a tangible expression of a non-normative sexual orientation. A life course perspective was used to study 24 cases of cohabiting lesbian, gay and bi/pansexual individuals in Chile. The results show the enduring significance of families in providing support, sociability, identity, and a sense of belonging. Nevertheless, it reveals notable instances of family rejection towards queer kin. In Chile, both families of origin and queer individuals employ subtle strategies to conceal their queerness, guided by notions of 'respect' associated with family honour and decency. These strategies involve unspoken agreements to maintain family bonds through discreet displays of queer behaviour without explicit acknowledgement of sexual identity.

Resumo Objetivou-se compreender as experiências de dupla maternidade na atenção à saúde durante o pré-natal, parto e puerpério a partir de um método qualitativo, utilizando entrevistas individuais on-line e grupo focal on-line assíncrono com mulheres cisgêneros, a maioria em relacionamentos homoafetivos. Os resultados revelaram a marginalização das vivências parentais dessas mulheres, destacando a violência institucional presente nos serviços de saúde brasileiros, sendo apresentados em dois eixos temáticos: 1) Cisheteronormatividade e seu impacto nas experiências de dupla maternidade e 2) Violência institucional nos serviços de saúde: da curiosidade à LGBTQIA+fobia. Conclui-se que a cisheteronormatividade prejudica a atenção à saúde para essas experiências, especialmente ao invisibilizar a mãe não gestante, destacando a urgência de capacitar profissionais de saúde, repensar e desafiar as normas cisgênero e heterossexuais e promover políticas inclusivas para garantir cuidados equitativos e combater a violência institucional.
Abstract The objective was to understand experiences of double motherhood during antenatal, childbirth and postpartum healthcare, using a qualitative method involving individual online interviews and asynchronous, online focus groups of cisgender women, mostly in same-sex relationships. The results revealed how these women's experiences of parenting were marginalised, highlighting institutional violence in Brazilian healthcare services, which are presented here in two thematic dimensions: 1) Cisheteronormativity and its impact on experiences of double motherhood; and 2) Institutional violence in healthcare services: from curiosity to LGBTQIA+phobia. It was concluded that cisheteronormativity hinders healthcare for these experiences, especially by rendering the non-gestational mother invisible. This underscores the urgent need to train healthcare personnel, rethink and challenge cisgender and heterosexual norms and promote inclusive policies to ensure equitable care and combat institutional violence.

This paper centers on Isabella, a Candomblé follower who struggled with severe rheumatoid arthritis from an early age, arguing that care and self-care practices in Candomblé are intertwined to such extent that they challenge the dichotomy of caring and being cared for. In contrast to a linear model of care that positions care-giver and care--receiver at opposite ends of care relationships, the concept of 'circular care' describes forms of care that are directed at others and simultaneously at oneself. Exploring the religious kinship in a Candomblé house - with Candomblé deities (orixás) and between humans - this paper shows how circular care blurs the distinction between self and other. The emic concept of 'the double mirror' illustrates the -'constitutive alterity' of humans and orixás who relate to each other through kinship building and collective care practices. Since circular care frames one's care for the orixás and the religious family as healing self-care, failing to provide the correct care may in turn be experienced as detrimental self-neglect. The concept of circular care thus enables a deeper understanding of complex dynamics of care and self-care in the contexts of chronic illness, religion, kinship, and beyond.

This brief and personal essay discusses Ester Hernández's and Astrid Hadad's artistic relationship, which includes a beautiful friendship that spans time and space. In particular, and from an intimate vantage point, I read two of Hernández's images that feature Hadad, which the Mexican artist has displayed in her home in Mexico City, to ponder a larger question regarding contemporary cross-border feminist and genderqueer esthetics and relations. The queer kinship between these two artists, I humbly posit, extends to the fans that come out to support Hadad's shows when she performs in cities in the U.S. with large Latinx demographics, particularly in California.

The global population of Dicotyles tajacu (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cetartiodactyla: Tayassuidae), commonly known as the collared peccary and distributed in the Neotropics, is currently in decline due to anthropogenic pressures. In this study, five microsatellite loci were used to genetically characterize a group of 20 captive-born collared peccaries intended for reintroduction. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and relatedness of captive individuals using microsatellite markers. The genetic data generated were used to evaluate the viability of the reintroduction and to propose measures for the management and conservation of this species. In this study, we found relatively high genetic diversity indices, indicating that the group was genetically diverse. Inbreeding coefficients with negative values were observed, indicating an excess of alleles in heterozygosis and an absence of inbreeding. One locus showed deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which may have been caused by the mixing of individuals from different origins. Relatedness analysis indicated that some individuals were highly related, with coefficients indicating they may be first-degree relatives. Our findings indicate that the studied group has enough genetic diversity to be released into nature, but the high individual relatedness found would require the adoption of strategies after the release of animals in the wild to ensure their persistence.

This work presents the results of a DNA test aimed to determine a possible biological link of paternal half brotherhood of two males. The combined use of biparentally inherited markers (autosomal STRs) and a panel of 27 Y-STRs allowed us to determine the existence of a biological relationship of kinship, even after detecting three mutations at their Y-STR haplotypes along the analyses, constituting an infrequent multiple mutation situation. This case is an example illustrating the importance of having different analytical markers sets and strategies for clarifying complex kinship cases where mutations occur.

Microsatellite genetic markers are the gold standard for human genetic identification. Forensic analyses around the world are carried out through protocols using the analysis of STR markers in autosomal chromosomes and in the Y chromosome to solve crimes. However, these analyses do not allow for the resolution of all cases, such as rape situations with suspicion of incest, paternity without a maternal sample for comparison, and biological traces with DNA mixture where the profile sought is female, among other situations. In these complex cases, the study of X-chromosome STR markers significantly increases the probability of identification by complementing the data obtained for autosomal and Y-chromosome markers, due to the unique structure of the X chromosome and its exclusive method of inheritance. However, there are currently no validated Brazilian protocols for this purpose, nor are there any population data necessary for statistical analyses that must be included in the issuance of expert reports. Thus, the aim of this article is to provide a literary review of the applications of X-chromosomal markers in population genetics.

Primate thanatology, or the study of primate responses to dying and death, has become increasingly relevant in recent years. However, the number of reports remains small and the quality of published records is highly variable. Here, we extend the literature on comparative thanatology with observations on a population of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus). We compiled all seven cases of muriqui responses to dead, dying, or abandoned infants observed by trained researchers of the Muriqui Project of Caratinga between 1998 and 2020. Four different adult females were observed carrying their dead offspring (n = 4) and one of these females was also observed carrying her dead grand-offspring (n = 1). Five of the seven cases involved dead newborns, one involved a newborn abandoned by its mother on the forest floor, and one involved a 1.6-year-old infant that was visibly ill and died after its mother left it on the ground. Dead newborns were carried for 1-3 days, and all cases occurred during the dry season months. No other age-sex classes were observed to interact with the dead or dying immatures. Our observations are consistent with hypotheses concerning the predominance of dead-infant carrying in other primates, and with the effects of climate on rates of corpse disintegration. They also show the value of long-term studies for obtaining and understanding anecdotal records of rare behavior.

Mortality crises are relatively common demographic events, but we know little about how they affect local populations beyond excess mortality. I argue that using a kinship perspective to study mortality crises provides valuable insights into (1) how excess mortality affects the exposure to kin loss and (2) how family bereavement may contribute to the reproduction of historical memory in the long term. I explore these two processes using a unique genealogical database that records the complete demographic history of Rio Negro, a genocide-affected population in Guatemala, between 1982 and 2015. The analysis shows that deaths from the 1982 genocide were balanced by age, sex, and socioeconomic status. One third of the population were killed, but two thirds were left bereaved (the top 10% most affected individuals lost 30% of their nuclear family relatives and 23% of their extended family relatives). Notably, the proportion of the population related to a victim did not change between 1983 and 2015. The persistence of family bereavement can be interpreted as a prolongation of grief or as a driver of historical memory. These demographic dynamics have implications for the study of historical events beyond mortality crises.

Genetic and omics analyses frequently require independent observations, which is not guaranteed in real datasets. When relatedness cannot be accounted for, solutions involve removing related individuals (or observations) and, consequently, a reduction of available data. We developed a network-based relatedness-pruning method that minimizes dataset reduction while removing unwanted relationships in a dataset. It uses node degree centrality metric to identify highly connected nodes (or individuals) and implements heuristics that approximate the minimal reduction of a dataset to allow its application to complex datasets. When compared with two other popular population genetics methodologies (PLINK and KING), NAToRA shows the best combination of removing all relatives while keeping the largest possible number of individuals in all datasets tested and also, with similar effects on the allele frequency spectrum and Principal Component Analysis than PLINK and KING. NAToRA is freely available, both as a standalone tool that can be easily incorporated as part of a pipeline, and as a graphical web tool that allows visualization of the relatedness networks. NAToRA also accepts a variety of relationship metrics as input, which facilitates its use. We also release a genealogies simulator software used for different tests performed in this study.

Acoustic signals are ubiquitous across mammalian taxa. They serve a myriad of functions related to the formation and maintenance of social bonds and can provide conspecifics information about caller condition, motivation and identity. Disentangling the relative importance of evolutionary mechanisms that shape vocal variation is difficult, and little is known about heritability of mammalian vocalizations. Duetting--coordinated vocalizations within male and female pairs--arose independently at least four times across the Primate Order. Primate duets contain individual- or pair-level signatures, but the mechanisms that shape this variation remain unclear. Here, we test for evidence of heritability in two call types (pulses and chirps) from the duets of captive coppery titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus). We extracted four features--note rate, duration, minimum and maximum fundamental frequency--from spectrograms of pulses and chirps, and estimated heritability of the features. We also tested whether features varied with sex or body weight. We found evidence for moderate heritability in one of the features examined (chirp note rate), whereas inter-individual variance was the most important source of variance for the rest of the features. We did not find evidence for sex differences in any of the features, but we did find that body weight and fundamental frequency of chirp elements covaried. Kin recognition has been invoked as a possible explanation for heritability or kin signatures in mammalian vocalizations. Although the function of primate duets remains a topic of debate, the presence of moderate heritability in titi monkey chirp elements indicates duets may serve a kin recognition function.

I argue that non-demographers engage in "counter-demography" - repurposing demographic tools as they interpret and manage local, individual expressions of complex population-level issues. I explore this through a focus on population aging in Peru. Like many developing countries, Peru is in a delicate demographic position where sometimes violent efforts to reduce fertility, and broader processes of modernization and education, have resulted in population aging. In the urban Andes, professional aging-workers (those who labor to support aging individuals) informally reference statistics and data visualizations to highlight their own complex and holistic efforts to support aging people on the ground.

Abstract Background: Two biotypes of Aberdeen Angus cattle breed, known as Old Type and New Type, that differ in their origin and beef production are formally recognized. In Colombia, this breed has been commercialized for approximately 80 years. Studies on the origin, kinship and levels of genetic diversity of this breed in Colombian herds are scarce, yet important for planning crossing and management strategies. Objective: To measure the genetic diversity and structure of two Colombian herds of Old Type and New Type biotypes of Aberdeen Angus from Huila and Cundinamarca provinces and assess mitochondrial introgression with other breeds. Methods: A set of ten microsatellites and sequences of the Mitochondrial Control Region were characterized. Estimators of genetic diversity and population differentiation along with tests of population assignment were applied. Results: Nuclear loci were highly polymorphic as shown by the Polymorphic Information Content (0.599) and the Probability of Identity (1.896 10-08). Both populations were highly diverse and clearly differentiated into two groups corresponding to the Old Type and New Type phenotypes. In contrast, mitochondrial data failed to distinguish these two groups and showed extensive admixture. Conclusions: This study optimized a set of ten highly polymorphic nuclear markers that may be used for parentage and population genetic studies of Aberdeen Angus. Genetic differentiation in these loci agreed with phenotypic differences of the Old and New Types. However, mitochondrial data indicated ancestry of multiple European breeds in the origin of Colombian Aberdeen Angus.
Resumen Antecedentes: Dentro de la raza Aberdeen Angus existen dos biotipos conocidos como Old Type y New Type, las cuales difieren en su origen y producción de carne. En Colombia, esta raza se ha venido comercializando desde hace aproximadamente 80 años. No obstante, aún no se han realizado estudios sobre su origen, parentesco y niveles de diversidad genética de esta raza en hatos colombianos, lo cual es importante para planear estrategias de cruce y manejo. Objetivo: Medir la diversidad y estructura genética de dos hatos colombianos de Aberdeen Angus Old Type y New Type de Huila y Cundinamarca y evaluar la introgresión mitocondrial con otras razas. Métodos: Se caracterizó un grupo de diez loci microsatélite y se secuenció la Región Control Mitocondrial. Se aplicaron estimadores de diversidad genética y diferenciación poblacional, junto con pruebas de asignación poblacional. Resultados: Los loci microsatélite fueron altamente polimórficos, tal como lo indicaron el Contenido de Información Polimórfica (0,599) y la Probabilidad de Identidad (1,896 10-08). Las poblaciones evaluadas de Aberdeen Angus en Colombia fueron altamente diversas y se diferenciaron claramente en dos grupos correspondientes a los fenotipos Old Type y New Type. En contraste, los datos mitocondriales no recobraron estos dos grupos y mostraron una amplia mezcla genética. Conclusiones: Este estudio optimizó un grupo de diez marcadores altamente polimórficos que pueden ser usados para estudios de parentesco y genética poblacional de Aberdeen Angus. La diferenciación genética en loci nucleares concordó con las diferencias fenotípicas entre Old y New Types, pero los datos mitocondriales indicaron ancestría de múltiples razas europeas en el origen del Aberdeen Angus colombiano.

As estimativas de diversidade genética e diferenciação populacional foram aplicadas, juntamente com testes de designação populacional. Resultados: Os locus microssatélites foram altamente polimórficos, conforme indicado pelo Conteúdo de Infomação Polimórfica (0,599) e Probabilidade de Identidade (1,896 10-08). As populações avaliadas de Aberden Angus na Colômbia eram altamente diversificadas e claramente diferenciadas em dois grupos correspondentes aos fenótipos do Old Type e New Type. Em contraste, os dados mitocondriais não recuperaram esses dois grupos e mostraram um amplo mix genético. Conclusões: Este estudo otimizou um grupo de dez marcadores altamente polimórficos que podem ser usados para estudos genéticos de parentesco e população de Aberdeen Angus. A diferenciação genética nos loci nucleares concordou com as diferenças fenotípicas entre os Old e New Types, mas os dados mitocondriais indicam ancestralidade de várias raças européias na origem do Aberdeen Angus colombiano.
RESUMO
Resumo Reflete-se sobre a temática da família e do parentesco, tendo em vista sua apropriação como norte de políticas públicas na saúde, em especial a Estratégia Saúde da Família. São apresentadas contribuições de estudos clássicos de antropologia, sociologia e história sobre origens, papel social, funções e transformações da família ao longo do tempo, incluindo-se abordagens de outras questões contemporâneas. Comentam-se análises específicas sobre o Brasil desde a família patriarcal, apresentando-se dados demográficos atuais e finalizando com comentários sobre a necessidade de ampliar, na formação e nas orientações fornecidas aos profissionais da saúde, reflexões mais amplas sobre família tendo em vista fortalecer a implementação de políticas públicas.
Abstract This article discusses contributions from the social and human sciences on the topic of family and kinship, considering the appropriation of the family as central to public health policies, particularly the Family Health Strategy. Contributions from classical anthropological, sociological, and historical research on the origins, social role, functions, and transformations of the family over time are presented, and include approaches related to family, gender, social class, and other contemporary issues. Specific analyses related to Brazil and the patriarchal family, among other aspects, are discussed along with current demographic data, concluding with comments on the need to expand reflections on the family in the training and guidelines provided to health professionals to strengthen the implementation of public policies.

The franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) is the most threatened small cetacean in the South Atlantic. In this study we report the development of 13 microsatellite markers for franciscanas through next-generation sequencing, and the characterization of those loci in 38 samples from the species' northernmost population (Espírito Santo, Brazil). Besides providing diversity indices for the new, specific loci, we also report on the transferability of heterologous loci which had not been screened in franciscanas before, and review all loci used in previous studies. Expected heterozygosity in the new loci ranged between 0.107 and 0.595, and all but one were in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium. These are the first microsatellite loci isolated from franciscanas, and they are an important addition to heterologous markers that were available previously.

Ectophylla alba is a tent-making bat that roosts in mixed-sex clusters comprising adults and offspring. Our goal was to determine the genetic identity of individuals belonging to different roosting groups. We tested the hypothesis of kin selection as a major force structuring group composition. We used 9 microsatellites designed for E. alba to determine the genetic identity and probability of parentage of individuals. We analyzed parentage and kinship using the software ML-Relate, GenAIEx, and Cervus. The obtained relationship probabilities (0.5) revealed a clear maternal relationship between female adults and offspring with allele compatibility, and at least 5 relationships between male adults and pups. We found a low degree of relatedness within roosting groups. Between roosting groups at different sites, the mean probability of a half-sibling relationship ranged from 0.214 to 0.244 and, for full-sibling relationship, from 0.383 to 0.553. Genetically, adult individuals were poorly related within clusters, and kinship as an evolutionary force could not explain group membership.

The quality of life (QoL) of people with Alzheimer disease (PwAD) may be influenced by the type of relationship between carer and the PwAD. Dyads of 98 PwAD/carers (N = 49 spouse-carers; N = 49 nonspouses carers) were measured about QoL, cognition, dementia severity, awareness of disease, functionality, depression, anxiety, and burden of care. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to identify the factors that influenced the spouse and nonspouse self-report PwAD QoL (PQOL) and to compare carers' ratings of PwAD QoL (C-PQOL). The total score of QoL for spouse and nonspouse PwAD showed no significant difference (P = .29). The linear regression demonstrated that higher awareness of disease was significantly related to spouse PQOL (P = .001). Nonspouse PQOL was negatively related to lower depression (P = .007). The total score of QoL for spouse and nonspouse C-PQOL showed no significant difference (P = .14). The linear regression demonstrated that depression of spouse-PwAD (P < .001) and burden of care (P = .001) were negatively related to spouse-dyads' C-PQOL. The nonspouse-dyads C-PQOL was negatively related to depression of nonspouse-PwAD (P < .001), awareness of disease (P = .001), and the mood of the carer (P = .01). Spouse and nonspouse PwAD evaluate PQOL better than carers (C-PQOL). No significant difference was found in the total PQOL and C-PQOL of spouse and nonspouse, but dyads evaluated differently about what is important to assess QoL.
