RESUMO

Oxyspirura petrowi is a heteroxenous nematode that infects the harderian gland and other ocular tissues in birds. High-intensity infections often cause damage to the infected tissues. Due to the nature of the infection sites, treatment of O. petrowi in these hosts can be difficult. Fenbendazole (FBZ) is a common anthelmintic used to treat birds for helminth infections; however, little information exists as to the efficacy of the drug on O. petrowi infections. The present study aims to estimate lethal concentrations of FBZ to O. petrowi. Adult O. petrowi were maintained in vitro and exposed to doses of 5, 50, 100, and 200 µM concentrations of FBZ and included both negative and vehicle controls. Exposure lasted 7.5 days and lethality was determined for each treatment. Negative and vehicle controls did not differ, and both had 75% survival at the end of the treatment period. The percentage survivorship in ascending order of concentration, corrected for the controls, was 66.67%, 44.44%, 33.33%, and 0%. LC10, LC50, and LC90 estimates were 7.5 ± 0.26, 49.1 ± 1.69, and 163.2 ± 5.63 µM, respectively. In the context of known pharmacokinetics of FBZ in birds, a single oral dose of FBZ can achieve exposure levels that are lethal to O. petrowi, but the drug does not stay in the system long enough. Thus, treatment of O. petrowi infections will require multiple oral doses over several days.

Triclosan (TCS), an antimicrobial additive in various personal and health care products, has been widely detected in aquatic environment around the world. The present study investigated the impacts of TCS in the gills of the fish, Cyprinus carpio employing histopathological, biochemical, molecular docking and simulation analysis. The 96 h LC50 value of TCS in C. carpio was found to be 0.968 mg/L. Fish were exposed to 1/1000th (1 µg/L), 1/100th (10 µg/L), and 1/10th (100 µg/L) of 96 h LC50 value for a period of 28 days. The histopathological alterations observed in the gills were hypertrophy, hyperplasia, edematous swellings, and fusion of secondary lamellae in TCS exposed groups. The severity of these alterations increased with both the concentration as well as the duration of exposure. The present study revealed that the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced glutathione content decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in both concentration and duration dependent manner. However, a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the activity of the metabolic enzymes such as acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase was observed in all three exposure concentrations of TCS from 7 to 28 days. The activity of acetylcholinesterase declined significantly (p < 0.05) from 7 to 28 days whereas the content of acetylcholine increased significantly at the end of 28 day. The experimental results were further confirmed by molecular docking and simulation analysis that showed strong binding of TCS with acetylcholinesterase enzyme. The study revealed that long-term exposure to sublethal concentrations of TCS can lead to severe physiological and histopathological alterations in the fish.

This study investigates the effects of glyphosate-based herbicide (GLY) and pure emamectin benzoate (EB) insecticide on the brackish copepod Pseudodiaptomus annandalei. The 96h median lethal concentration (96 h LC50) was higher in the GLY exposure (male: 3420.96 ± 394.67 µg/L; female: 3093.46 ± 240.67 µg/L) than in the EB (male: 79.10 ± 7.30 µg/L; female: 6.38 ± 0.72 µg/L). Based on the result of 96h LC50, we further examined the effects of GLY and EB exposures at sub-lethal concentrations on the naupliar production of P. annandalei. Subsequently, a multigenerational experiment was conducted to assess the long-term impact of GLY and EB at concentrations 375 µg/L, and 0.025 µg/L respectively determined by sub-lethal exposure testing. During four consecutive generations, population growth, clutch size, prosome length and width, and sex ratio were measured. The copepods exposed to GLY and EB showed lower population growth but higher clutch size than the control group in most generations. Gene expression analysis indicated that GLY and EB exposures resulted in the downregulation of reproduction-related (vitellogenin) and growth-related (myosin heavy chain) genes, whereas a stress-related gene (heat shock protein 70) was upregulated after multigenerational exposure. The results of the toxicity test after post-multigenerational exposure indicated that the long-term GLY-exposed P. annandalei displayed greater vulnerability towards GLY toxicity compared to newly-exposed individuals. Whereas, the tolerance of EB was significantly higher in the long-term exposed copepod than in newly-exposed individuals. This suggests that P. annandalei might have greater adaptability towards EB toxicity than towards GLY toxicity. This study reports for the first time the impacts of common pesticides on the copepod P. annandalei, which have implications for environmental risk assessment and contributes to a better understanding of copepod physiological responses towards pesticide contaminations.

Honey bees are important plant pollinators and honey producers. Contamination of the environment with metals can lead to a decline in honey bee populations. Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) salts are commonly used as fungicides and foliar fertilizers. In this study, we investigated the effects of 10-day chronic oral exposure to different concentrations of Cu (CuSO4) and Zn (ZnCl2) on survival and feeding rates of Carniolan honey bees in laboratory conditions. We found that mortality in honey bee workers increased in a concentration-dependent manner and that Cu (lethal concentration [LC50] = 66 mg/l) was more toxic than Zn (LC50 = 144 mg/l). There was no difference in the feeding rate of Cu-treated bees for the different concentrations tested, but the feeding rate decreased with the increase in Zn concentration. To determine feeding preference or avoidance for Cu and Zn, we conducted 2-choice 24-h feeding experiments. We demonstrated that honey bees preferred Zn-containing solutions compared to the control diet. A two-choice experiment with Cu showed a tendency for honey bees to be deterred by Cu at high concentrations; however, it was not statistically significant. In summary, our results suggest that honey bee workers may suffer adverse effects when exposed to ecologically relevant concentrations of Cu and Zn.

The progressive establishment of gas platforms and increasing petroleum accidents pose a threat to zooplankton communities and thus to pelagic ecosystems. This study is the first to compare the impacts of gas-condensate and crude oil on copepod assemblages. We conducted microcosm experiments simulating slick scenarios at five different concentrations of gas-condensate and crude oil to determine and compare their lethal effects and the bioconcentration of low molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (LMW-PAHs) in eastern Mediterranean coastal copepod assemblages. We found that gas-condensate had a two-times higher toxic effect than crude oil, significantly reducing copepod survival with increased exposure levels. The LMW-PAHs bioconcentration factor was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher in copepods exposed to gas-condensate than in those exposed to crude oil. The median lethal concentration (LC50) was significantly lower in calanoids vs. cyclopoid copepods, suggesting that calanoids are more susceptible to gas-condensate and crude oil pollution, with potential trophic implications.

This study was designed to investigate the toxic effects of two frequently used commercial insecticides containing endosulfan and indoxacarb on a freshwater amphipod Gammarus kischineffensis. In this context, the 24, 48, 72 and 96 h LC50 values of these pesticides were determined for G. kischineffensis. Then the histopathological effects of these pesticides on the gill tissues of this species were evaluated. At the end of the study, the 96 h LC50 values of commercial-grade endosulfan and indoxacarb for G. kischineffensis were determined as 1.861 µg L-1 and 20.212 mg L-1, respectively. Histopathologically, the most common histopathological alterations in individuals exposed to sublethal concentrations of commercial-grade endosulfan and indoxacarb were pillar cell hypertrophy resulting in atrophy of the hemocoelic space and hemocytic infiltration. Considering these results, it can be said that commercial-grade endosulfan is extremely and indoxacarb is slightly toxic to G. kischineffensis.

The neonicotinoid pesticide imidacloprid has been used worldwide since 1992. As one of the most important chemicals used in pest control, there have been concerns that its run-off into rivers and lakes could adversely affect aquatic ecosystems, where zooplankton play a central role in the energy flow from primary to higher trophic levels. However, studies assessing the effects of pesticides at the species level have relied on a Daphnia-centric approach, and no studies have been conducted using species-level assessments on a broad range of zooplankton taxa. In the present study, we therefore investigated the acute toxicity of imidacloprid on 27 freshwater crustacean zooplankton (18 cladocerans, 3 calanoid copepods and 6 cyclopoid copepods). The experiment showed that a majority of calanoid copepods and cladocerans were not affected at all by imidacloprid, with the exception of one species each of Ceriodaphnia and Diaphasoma, while all six cyclopoid copepods showed high mortality rates, even at concentrations of imidacloprid typically found in nature. In addition, we found a remarkable intra-taxonomic variation in susceptibility to this chemical. As many cyclopoid copepods are omnivorous, they act as predators as well as competitors with other zooplankton. Accordingly, their susceptibility to imidacloprid is likely to cause different responses at the community level through changes in predation pressure as well as changes in competitive interactions. The present results demonstrate the need for species-level assessments of various zooplankton taxa to understand the complex responses of aquatic communities to pesticide disturbance.

Danube sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) which is identified as endangered species can be exposed to pollutants such as bisphenol A (BPA) that have a disruptive effect on the endocrine system at any time. Starting from this motivation, the current study focused on BPA toxicity in A. gueldenstaedtii juvenile individuals and its adverse effects in sub-lethal concentration. The median lethal concentration (LC50) of BPA was 5.03 mg/L in 96th hour. In the chronic period, 0.625 mg/L and 1.25 mg/L BPA concentrations were evaluated based on the result of acute study. Accordingly, growth performance was significantly decreased in BPA groups (1.25 mg/L BPA group was significantly lowest) compared to control (p < 0.05). In the acute period, behavioral disorders were standing at the bottom/corner of tank, slowing and stopping of gill movement, decreased response to stimuli, and death, respectively. While vacuolization was severe in the liver tissue of the fish in the acute period, intense necrosis and melanomacrophage centers were observed in the chronic period. In terms of genotoxicity, longer DNA migration was observed in all groups exposed to BPA than in the control group. In addition, lower erythrocyte and hemoglobin were observed in the BPA groups compared to control. As a result, the current study revealed toxic effect of BPA on A. gueldenstaedtii juvenile individuals and its negative results on fish physiology.

An acute toxicity study assessed the LC50 values for eight different amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs), featuring two cations, tetrabutylphosphonium [P4444] and tetrabutylammonium [N4444], coupled with four anions [PHE], [ASP], [SER], and [GLY]. According to the OECD 203 standard for acute fish toxicity tests with guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata, all the AAILs exhibited low toxicity levels, and were practically nontoxic and harmless. The LC50 values surpassed 100 mg/L and 1000 mg/L. This study provides valuable insights for industrial professionals in utilizing tetrabutylphosphonium-based amino acid ionic liquids [P4444] [AA] and tetrabutylammonium-based amino acid ionic liquids [N4444][AA] in chemical processes, indicating their safety in aquatic environments. These promising results highlight the potential of incorporating these AAILs into diverse chemical processes while ensuring minimal ecological impact.

The Spodoptera frugiperda is a notorious pest with a broad host range. It severely damages crops, mainly in areas of the globewhere maize and sorghum are grown. The pest is difficult to control due to its adaptive nature and resistance to several insecticides available in the market. So, an identification of the alternative strategy is the prime important in the present context. Insecticidal activities of cyanobacterial extracts were evaluated in the laboratory as a biocomponent against S. frugiperda. The crude extracts of Nostoc muscorum and Spirulina sp. were prepared by using ethanol, methanol and petroleum ether solvents. Soxhlet apparatus was used for extraction. S. frugiperda larvae in their second instar were given access to fragments of maize leaf that had been treated with various cyanobacterial extracts. The findings displayed that the petroleum ether extract of N. muscorum had the lowest LC50 value of 155.22 ppm, followed by petroleum ether extracts of Spirulina, ethanol extract of N. Muscorum, methanol extract of N. muscorum, ethanol and methanol extract of Spirulina with an LC50 values of 456.02, 710, 780, 1050 and 1070 ppm respectively. Later, the effect of LC50 values on many biological parameters like the larval duration and pupal stages, the percentage of pupation, the weight of the pupal stage, the malformation of the pupal and adult stages, adult emergence percentage, fertility and the longevity of the male and female adult stages of S. frugiperda was examined. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyse the crude extract to identify the bioactive components that were responsible for the insecticidal properties. The major compounds detected were diethyl phthalate (19.87 %), tetradecane (5.03%), hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester (4.10 %), dodecane (4.03%), octadecane (3.72%), octadecanoic acid, methyl ester (3.40 %), ethyl oleate (3.11 %), methyl ester. octadecenoic acid (3.04 %), heptadecane (3.04 %) and phytol (3.02 %). The presence of several bioactive chemicals in the cyanobacterial extracts may be the reason for their insecticidal actions, thus it can be used as an alternative and new source to combat fall armyworm and other crop pests.

This study assessed the toxicity of the Sheathmar pesticide on Oreochromis mossambicus. The 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) was determined using probit analysis, with survivability assessed using general threshold survival models (GUTS). Over 45 days, fish exposed to sublethal Sheathmar doses were studied for changes in growth, blood profiles, and liver enzymes. According to the findings, the LC50 values of Sheathmar for Oreochromis mossambicus at different time intervals were determined as follows: 3016.64 µg/l at 24 h, 2723.13 µg/l at 48 h, 2415.45 µg/l at 72 h, and 2154.87 µg/l at 96 h. The GUTS-SD model effectively predicted fish survivability after Sheathmar exposure. Sublethal exposure led to significant alterations in growth and hematological, biochemical, and stress enzyme parameters in Oreochromis mossambicus. Moreover, the correlation matrix, integrated biomarker response (IBR), and biomarker response index (BRI) highlighted significant impacts on multiple biomarkers in Oreochromis mossambicus. Thus, the results underscore the harmful effects of Sheathmar on Oreochromis mossambicus, indicating a need for further study and mitigation.

Pesticides including cypermethrin (10% EC) are commonly used pesticide in tea gardens of Bangladesh possess distinct harmful effects on an aquatic community. The experiment was carried out to assess the ecotoxicological effects of cypermethrin (10%) concentrate on indigenous Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus). A total of 120 A. testudineus (mean length 16 ± 2.67 cm and mean weight 31.6 ± 3.56 g) were exposed to the acute toxicity test when the lethal concentration 50 value (LC50) for 96 h was maintained at 1.00 ppm. Three different sub-lethal concentrations of 0.05 ppm (5%), 0.10 ppm (10%), and 0.20 ppm (20%) were used respectively as three treatments and a control of 0 ppm with three replicates each. Restlessness, erratic movement, increased opercular activities, loss of equilibrium, and irregular response to feeding were observed in all the treatments compared to control one. Concerning histopathological alterations, all the analyzed organs showed highest changes in the T3 (cypermethrin conc. 20%) compared to other treatments while T0 (0 ppm) had normal structure. The major changes in the gill were epithelial cell hyperplasia, necrosis, severe lamellar fusion and epithelial lifting; while necrotic proximal tubules, glomerular shrinkage, disrupted renal corpuscle of the kidney and nuclear pyknosis, degenerated hepatic cells and vacuolation were observed in the liver. Severe melanomacrophage centre (MMC), haemosiderosis and vacuolation were found in spleen. The effect of cypermethrin on the hematological parameters of experimental fish was also studied. Red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit were decreased in the experimental groups and lowest value was in T3 while values of white blood cells were increased in the experimental groups compared to control one. Hence, the present observation revealed that pesticides even at low concentrations can cause harmful effects on A. testudineus.

Studies devised through the fusion of cleaning and environmental sciences can be summarized as follows: new cleaning kinetics applying a probability density function and a surface chemical approach to the aquatic toxicity of surfactants. Cleaning power analysis using the probability density functional method combines conventional cleaning kinetics using a first-order reaction equation with a risk analysis method using a probability density function. It is possible to analyze the cleaning mechanism from the obtained parameter values. It is also possible to determine whether the interaction between two different cleaning elements corresponds to a synergistic, additive, or offsetting effect. Studies on the aquatic toxicity of surfactants have focused on the surface tension at which surfactants exhibit toxicity, changes in toxicity due to water quality, and biodegradation, and the presence of adsorbed substances have been identified.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of propiconazole on the tubificid segmented worm, Tubifex tubifex. The animals were exposed to various concentrations of propiconazole for 96 h to assess the acute effect of this fungicide and for subacute level animals were exposed for 14 days with 10% and 20% of the 96 h LC50 value (0.211 and 0.422 mg/l, respectively). The 96 h LC50 value was determined to be 2.110 mg/l, and sublethal propiconazole concentrations caused significant changes in the oxidative stress enzymes. When compared to control organisms, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity first decreases and then significantly increases on days 7 and 14. However, GST activity decreases and MDA concentration rises in a concentration- and time-dependent manner throughout the exposure period. In addition, the impacts of propiconazole on Tubifex tubifex were characterized and depicted using a correlation matrix and an integrated biomarker response (IBR) assessment. These findings suggest that exposure to this fungicide distorts the survivability and behavioral response in Tubifex tubifex at the acute level. In addition, it modulates changes in oxidative stress enzymes at the sublethal level. Furthermore, the species sensitivity distribution curve indicates that this tubificid worm has a high risk of survival in the presence of the fungicide propiconazole in aquatic ecosystems.

The cockroach is one of the most important disease vectors in world. Entomopathogenic fungi, as three concentrations of spores were taken 1.1 × 105, 1.1 × 107, and 1.1 × 109 conidia/mL from two isolates of Nour and Saravan-Iranian. In this study, the immersion method caused about 13% mortality only in isolation (1 × 109 conidia/mL) of Saravan isolates. Inoculation of isolates below the pronotum did not significantly differ the mortality rate between the two genera (P = 0.8), compared to the pathogenicity of three isolates of M. anisopliae (1.1 × 105, 1.1 × 107, and 1.1 × 109 conidia/mL). In total, Saravan and Nour isolates were 66%, 73%, and 93%, respectively, indicating a significant difference (P < 0.001). Mortality of male and female cockroaches with Saravan isolates respectively occurred 3 and 4 days after inoculation (LT50 = 4.3d), while for Nour isolates, in both sexes, mortality was observed within four days after the test (LT50 = 5.5d). Considering the results M. anisopliae can be one benefit methods for control American cockroach in the future. .

The Rio Negro basin of Amazonia (Brazil) is a hotspot of fish biodiversity that is under threat from copper (Cu) pollution. The very ion-poor blackwaters have a high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. We investigated the Cu sensitivity of nine Amazonian fish species in their natural blackwaters (Rio Negro). The acute lethal concentration of Cu (96 h LC50) was determined at different dilutions of Rio Negro water (RNW) in ion-poor well water (IPW), ranging from 0 to 100%. The IPW was similar to RNW in pH and ionic composition but deficient in DOC, allowing this parameter to vary 20-fold from 0.4 to 8.3 mg/L in tests. The Biotic Ligand Model (BLM; Windward version 3.41.2.45) was used to model Cu speciation and toxicity over the range of tested water compositions, and to estimate lethal Cu accumulations on the gills (LA50). The modeling predicted a high relative abundance of Cu complexes with DOC in test waters. As these complexes became more abundant with increasing RNW content, a concomitant decrease in free Cu2+ was observed. In agreement with this modeling, acute Cu toxicity decreased (i.e. 96 h LC50 values increase) with increasing RNW content. The three most sensitive species (Hemigrammus rhodostomus, Carnegiella strigatta and Hyphessobrycon socolofi) were Characiformes, whereas Corydoras schwartzi (Siluriformes) and Apistogramma agassizii (Cichliformes) were the most tolerant. These sensitivity differences were reflected in the BLM-predicted lethal gill copper accumulation (LA50), which were generally lower in Characiformes than in Cichliformes. Using these newly estimated LA50 values in the BLM allowed for accurate prediction of acute Cu toxicity in the nine Amazonian fish. Our data emphasize that the BLM approach is a promising tool for assessing Cu risk to Amazonian fish species in blackwater conditions characterized by very low concentrations of major ions but high concentrations of DOC.

Labeo rohita, a fish species within the Carp family, holds significant dietary and aquacultural importance in South Asian countries. However, the habitats of L. rohita often face exposure to various harmful pesticides and organic compounds originating from industrial and agricultural runoff. It is challenging to individually investigate the effects of each potentially harmful compound. In such cases, in silico techniques like Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) and quantitative Read-Across Structure-Activity Relationship (q-RASAR) can be employed to construct algorithmic models capable of simultaneously assessing the toxicity of numerous compounds. We utilized the US EPA's ToxValDB database to curate data regarding acute median lethal concentration (LC50) toxicity for L. rohita. The experimental variables included study type (mortality), study duration (ranging from 0.25 h to 4 h), exposure route (static, flowthrough, and renewal), exposure method (drinking water), and types of chemicals (industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals). Using this dataset, we developed regression-based QSAR and q-RASAR models to predict chemical toxicity to L. rohita based on chemical descriptors. The key descriptors for predicting the toxicity of L. rohita in the regression-based QSAR model include F05[S-Cl], SpMax_EA(ri), s4_relPathLength_2, and SpDiam_AEA(ed). These descriptors can be employed to estimate the toxicity of untested compounds and aid in the development of compounds with lower toxicity based on the presence or absence of these descriptors. Both the QSAR and q-RASAR models serve as valuable tools for understanding the chemicals' structural features responsible for toxicity and for filling gaps in aquatic toxicity data by predicting the toxicity of newly untested compounds in relation to L. rohita. Finally, the developed best model was employed to predict 297 external chemicals, the most toxic substances to L. rohita were identified as cyhalothrin, isobornyl thiocyanatoacetate, and paclobutrzol, while the least toxic ones included ethyl acetate, ethylthiourea, and n-butyric acid.

Background: Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Wolbachia is a symbiotic alphaproteobacteria of arthropods that can be involved in susceptibility or resistance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Wolbachia and Deltamethrin susceptibility/resistance in Ph. papatasi. Deltamethrin filter papers (0.00002%) were used to test sand fly field collected from southern Iran. After the test, PCR amplification of the Wolbachia surface protein gene (wsp) was used to measure Wolbachia infection rate in the killed, surviving, and control groups. Result: The rates of infection by Wolbachia strain (wPap, super group A) differed between killed (susceptible) and surviving (resistant) Ph. papatasi specimens. The rate of Wolbachia infection in susceptible individuals was more than twice (2.3) (39% vs. 17%) in resistant individuals with the same genetic background. This difference was highly significant (p < 0.001), indicating a positive association between Wolbachia infection and susceptibility to Deltamethrin. In addition, the results showed that Deltamethrin can act as a PCR inhibitor during detection of Wolbachia in Ph. papatasi. Conclusion: Results of this study show that Wolbachia is associated with Deltamethrin susceptibility level in Ph. papatasi. Also, as Deltamethrin has been identified as a PCR inhibitor, great care must be taken in interpreting Wolbachia infection status in infected populations. The results of this study may provide information for a better understanding of the host-symbiont relationship, as well as application of host symbiosis in pest management.

In this study, the results of evaluating the acute toxicity of Bisphenol A on Danio rerio are presented, encompassing peripheral blood parameters, the composition of hematopoietic cells of erythroid and myeloid lines in the head kidney, and data from histological studies. The LC50 values of Bisphenol A for adult zebrafish individuals for 12, 24, and 48-96 h were determined, which were 18.04, 7.55, and 6.22 mg/L, respectively. The study includes data on the morphology and quantitative frequency of specific cells in the hematopoietic tissue of the head kidney, along with the consideration of adaptive mechanisms in hematopoiesis under BPA exposure. The application of polynomial regression analysis to reveal the concentration-effect relationship for some hematological and histological parameters was demonstrated. Significant increases in the frequency of erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities were observed at BPA concentrations of 6 and 8 mg/L, which indicates a genotoxic effect. BPA's impact on fish peripheral blood parameters manifested as an increase in the number of erythrocytes (RBC) and immature erythrocytes, as well as a decrease in the number of lymphocytes. The most notable pathological changes in the head kidney's hematopoietic tissue included circulatory disturbances and the formation of inflammation/degradation foci, as confirmed by histopathologic indices. At BPA concentrations of 2 and 4 mg/L, the observed changes were compensated for by hematopoietic adaptation mechanisms; however, at concentrations of 6 and 8 mg/L, acute systemic toxicity was evident.

The acute toxicity and sublethal effects of ammonia and nitrite on the air-beathing Siamese fighting fish, betta (Betta splendens) was studied for 96 h. The LC50 (50% Lethal Concentration) for 96 h for adult bettas to ammonia-N and nitrite-N was 123.4 mM (1.7 g/L, 95% confidence limits: 114.7-130.0 mM) and 24.6 mM (343.6 mg/L, 95% confidence limits: 22.7-26.4 mM) respectively. Exposure to 90 mM ammonia did not affect ammonia and urea excretion rates in bettas. There was no significant difference in values between control and ammonia-loaded (90 mM ammonia) individuals in either brain or liver activities of glutamine synthase, while plasma ammonia levels slightly increased. It appears unlikely that ammonia was converted to urea or amino acids for detoxification. Sublethal nitrite (24.6 mM nitrite) affected plasma nitrite, methemoglobin and hemoglobin. Plasma nitrite values remained much lower than ambient concentrations. Betta has a labyrinth organ and can breathe air. Bettas may temporarily reduce the entry of ammonia and nitrite into the body by increasing the rate of air respiration and reducing the contribution of the gill epithelium, which is highly permeable to these nitrogenous pollutants.
