RESUMO

This study investigates the relationship between labor values and two forms of envy-benign and malicious-as well as the potential mediating role of mindfulness using a mindfulness reperceiving model. Two thousand three hundred sixty three Chinese teenagers participated in a longitudinal study over an eight-month period, completing questionnaires measuring labor values, benign envy, malicious envy, and mindfulness. The cross-sectional data showed that labor values had an immediate negative effect on malicious envy, with mindfulness partially mediating this relationship. Additionally, labor values had an immediate positive effect on benign envy, but mindfulness did not mediate this relationship. Longitudinal data analysis revealed that the delayed effect of labor values on later benign/malicious envy was similar to its immediate effect. However, mindfulness only played a mediating role in the relationship between labor values and later malicious envy. Cross-gender stability was found in both the immediate effect model and the delayed effect model. Overall, this study sheds light on the influence of labor values on the development of social emotions and the potential mediating role of mindfulness in the Chinese cultural context.

RESUMO

Care robots have the potential to address the challenge of aging societies, such as labor shortages or the aging workforce. While previous studies have focused mainly on the productivity or workability of care robots, there has been an increasing need to understand the social value of care robots. This study attempted to identify the social values of care robots by conducting focus group interviews (FGIs) with twenty-four care recipients and caregivers and by using analytic hierarchy processes (AHPs) with thirteen individuals with expertise in the care service and care robot industries. Our results show that the labor- and health-related benefits, the technology innovation, and the provision of essential care work have the highest importance among the criteria of care robots' social values. The criteria that receive lowest priority are cost, the autonomy and needs of the care recipients, and the organizational innovation. Our study suggests that along with the private benefits and costs of care robots, their social values also need to be considered to improve the quality of care and to unlock the potential of the care robot industries.

BACKGROUND: Labor values are important components of the individual value system and considered to be among the most important values of an individual, especially in China. In studies of values, childhood maltreatment is considered to have an important influence on the formation of individual values. However, there is no previous research about the relationship between childhood maltreatment and labor values. The mechanism of childhood maltreatment on labor values is not clear and requires further study. METHODS: This study intended to investigate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and labor values, and further verify whether moral competence or prosocial normative tendency mediated this correlation. Therefore, 2691 participants were recruited from primary and secondary schools, who completed Labor Values Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Moral Competence subscale and Prosocial Norms subscale. RESULTS: Results revealed the negative correlation between childhood maltreatment and labor values. Importantly, childhood maltreatment also indirectly impacted labor values through moral competence and prosocial normative tendency. It indicated that both moral competence and prosocial normative tendency played a significant mediating role in this relationship. Our findings are valuable for understanding the underlying mechanism between early trauma and values. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood maltreatment has important implications for labor values. Moral competence and prosocial normative tendency mediate between childhood maltreatment and labor values. The results remind us to pay attention to the important influence of childhood maltreatment in the cultivation of labor values, and focus on the role of moral competence and prosocial normative tendency.

This study examined the mediating role of altruistic tendency in the association between labor values and subjective well-being (SWB). About 2,691 Chinese students (1,504 males and 1,187 females) completed the labor values scale (LVS), the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, and the altruistic tendency scale. Results demonstrated that labor values were positively associated with life satisfaction and positive affect, while negatively with negative affect. The altruistic tendency was positively correlated with labor values, and positive affect, while negatively correlated with negative affect. Furthermore, altruistic tendency served as a mediator linking labor values and positive/negative affect. These results confirmed the relationship between labor values and SWB and revealed the mechanism of altruism tendency between the two.

To explore the positive and negative effects of labor values on mental health from the aspects of life satisfaction and psychological distress, and further verify the mediating role of social support. A total of 2,691 primary and secondary school students were surveyed by Labor Values Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Social Support, General Health Questionnaire and Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the results of which showed that as: (1) labor values can positively predict life satisfaction, while they are negatively correlated with psychological distress; (2) social support can play a mediating role between labor values and life satisfaction; and (3) social support can also play a mediating role in the relationship between labor values and psychological distress. This study revealed that the specific path and mechanism of labor values on mental health. This provided a reference for families and schools to further implement the education of labor values on primary and secondary school students and helped to promote the social construction of an education system that aimed at cultivating individual all-round development.

The core of labor education is to shape labor values. For China, a socialist country, the purpose of labor education is to establish labor values based on the Sinicization of Marxism. Thus, according to the theoretical analysis of labor values and the interpretation of government policies of Chinese scholars, the present study constructed a scale on labor values from five dimensions: honest labor value, equality status of labor value, cherishing labor value, loving labor value, and distribution value according to work. By using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, this scale was able to achieve high reliability and validity, as well as high external correlation validity. Notably, this was the first study to develop a scale on labor values from the perspective of empirical research, promoting an empirical trend in labor value research.

RESUMO

Este trabalho teve por objetivo fazer um breve histórico do meu interesse pelo estudo dos valores e discutir algumas das minhas contribuições científicas na área dos valores pessoais, laborais e organizacionais. O estímulo para escrever este texto foi o recebimento do título de professor emérito da Universidade de Brasília. Inicialmente, descrevi a minha trajetória de ensino e de pesquisa na Université de Moncton, no Canadá e na Universidade de Brasília. Os elementos discutidos neste relato representam indicadores da minha contribuição ao estudo dos valores pessoais, laborais e organizacionais.


The purpose of this paper is to briefly report my interest for the study of values and discuss some of my scientific contributions in the domain of personal, labor and company values. The encouragement to write this text was the receiving of the emeritus professor title by the Universidade de Brasília. To begin with, I described my teaching and researching experience at Université de Moncton, in Canada and at Universidade de Brasília. The elements discussed in this report represent indicators of my contribution to the study of personal, labor and company values.
