The giant African land snail Achatina fulica is known to be the intermediate host of a number of nematode species that are prejudicial to human and veterinary health, being also an agricultural and urban pest. The present study investigated the presence of nematodes in A. fulica and other terrestrial mollusks in 24 municipalities of Sergipe State, northeastern of Brazil, in the dry and rainy seasons. In 2019 and 2020, the specimens were collected in standard 20 m × 10 m plots (10 min/01 collector), while in 2021, they were collected by convenience sampling. The nematode species were identified based on sequencing of the mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase Subunit I (COI) gene and the ribosomal nuclear Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS 2). Specimens of A. fulica infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a nematode that causes eosinophilic meningitis (EM) in humans and animals, were collected in four municipalities. Two nematodes of veterinary importance were also identified, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Cruzia tentaculata in seven municipalities. This is the first record of Cruzia tentaculata in Sergipe. Free-living nematodes were also found in 18 municipalities. One of these species - Caenorhabditis briggsae - was identified in the municipality of Itabaiana. Specimens of other mollusks species were also collected. Only one of these mollusks, C. fasciata from Japaratuba, was found infected with free-living nematodes. A. fulica showed greater positivity for nematodes in the dry season, especially in the regions of Lower São Francisco River, Greater Aracaju and South Central Sergipe. The probability of infection increased when mollusks were larger and more recurrent in plots. Given that A. cantonensis is the etiological agent of EM and was found associated to A. fulica in four municipalities, it will be important to implement programs of continuous monitoring of the mollusk's fauna, combined with educational programs that provide information necessary to control A. fulica.

Background: The genus Pupinidius Möllendorff, 1901 is endemic in China and Nepal and consists of 15 species. China is the distribution centre of it with 12 species being recorded. New information: A new species, Pupinidiuspulchellus Chen, Dai, Wu & Ouyang sp. nov. is described from Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan, China. It can be distinguished from congeneric species by the shell with wide and distinct radial stripes; the thin, slightly reflexed and reddish-brown peristome; the unpointed apex; the unfused A-1 and A-2; the sub-globular and well defined bursa copulatrix; the unexpanded diverticle and the presence of epiphallic caecum.

Interbreeding and introgression between recently diverged species is common. However, the processes that prevent these species from merging where they co-occur are not well understood. We studied the mechanisms that allowed an isolated group of populations of the snail Helix thessalica to persist within the range of the related Helix pomatia despite high gene flow. Using genomic cline analysis, we found that the nuclear gene flow between the two taxa across the mosaic hybrid zone was not different from that expected under neutral admixture, but that the exchange of mtDNA was asymmetric. Tests showed that there is relaxed selection in the mitochondrial genome of H. thessalica and that the substitution rate is elevated compared to that of H. pomatia. A lack of hybrids that combine the mtDNA of H. thessalica with a mainly (>46%) H. pomatia genomic background indicates that the nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins of H. pomatia are not well adapted to the more rapidly evolving proteins and RNAs encoded by the mitochondrion of H. thessalica. The presumed reduction of fitness of hybrids with the fast-evolving mtDNA of H. thessalica and a high H. pomatia ancestry, similar to 'Darwin's Corollary to Haldane's rule', resulted in a relative loss of H. pomatia nuclear ancestry compared to H. thessalica ancestry in the hybrid zone. This probably prevents the H. thessalica populations from merging quickly with the surrounding H. pomatia populations and supports the hypothesis that incompatibilities between rapidly evolving mitochondrial genes and nuclear genes contribute to speciation.

A "once-in-a-millennium" super rainstorm battered Zhengzhou, central China, from 07/17/2021 to 07/22/2021 (named "7.20" Zhengzhou rainstorm). It killed 398 people and caused billions of dollars in damage. A pressing question is whether rainstorms of this intensity can be effectively documented by geological archives to understand better their historical variabilities beyond the range of meteorological data. Here, four land snail shells were collected from Zhengzhou, and weekly to daily resolved snail shell δ18O records from June to September of 2021 were obtained by gas-source mass spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectrometry. The daily resolved records show a dramatic negative shift between 06/18/2021 and 09/18/2021, which has been attributed to the "7.20" Zhengzhou rainstorm. Moreover, the measured amplitude of this shift is consistent with the theoretical value estimated from the flux balance model and instrumental data for the "7.20" Zhengzhou rainstorm. Our results suggest that the ultra-high resolution δ18O of land snail shells have the potential to reconstruct local synoptic scale rainstorms quantitatively, and thus fossil snail shells in sedimentary strata can be valuable material for investigating the historical variability of local rainstorms under different climate backgrounds.

Southeast Asia is renowned for its rich biodiversity and serves as a global hotspot for organisms. Satun Province, located in southern Thailand, represents a significant biogeographic and biodiversity region situated in the transition zone between the Indochinese and Sundaland hotspots. Thus, Satun Province has high diversity and abundance of organisms, especially land snails. However, Satun Province has been largely understudied for both diversity and biogeography. Our study aimed to investigate land snail communities, emphasizing comparisons between the mainland and island sites, and the influence of limestone and other rock types in Satun Province. Our exploration efforts identified a diverse land snail community comprising 17 families, which updated the total reported species in the province from 22 to 58 species. The results showed that islands had significantly greater land snail species richness and abundance, and larger Shannon index values in comparison to the mainland. Anthropogenic activities on the mainland led to habitat transformation and had detrimental impacts on native land snail diversity while promoting the spread of invasive species. In contrast, the presence of little-disturbed limestone habitats on some of the islands contributed to higher richness of land snails, as limestone areas are known for their high diversity and endemism. Snail communities varied along site characteristics; especially, limestone versus non-limestone areas and human activity levels (which were associated with national park protection), with limestone and protected areas having the highest diversity. Our study illustrates the value of protected areas as potential hotspots of biodiversity, especially for islands that are little disturbed by human activities and that have habitats that support high diversity, such as limestone outcrops. This study provides valuable insights into the biogeography of land snails in Satun Province and Southeast Asia and contributes to our understanding of the factors influencing land snail diversity.

The snail mucus provides several functions and is increasingly being exploited for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. This study aimed to determine the chemical profile of two snail mucus extracts: the garden snail (Helix aspersa) and the desert snail (Eremina desertorum). In addition, it elucidates the antityrosinase, antioxidant, and anticancer activities against the human cancer cell line epithelioid carcinoma (Hela). The mucus was extracted from the pedal glands of garden snails (H. aspersa) and desert snails (E. desertorum). 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay and the content of catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and reduced glutathione were utilized to assess the antioxidative screening activity of the mucus extracts. Besides a tyrosinase inhibitor assay, anticancer activity on cervical cancer cells (Hela) was studied. Additionally, the two mucus samples' total protein, total lipid, fatty acid, and amino acid profiles were compared. The mucus from both snails exhibited antioxidant activity. E. desertorum is more effective in inhibiting tyrosinase activity and has better scavenging activity than H. aspersa mucus extract. Both extracts revealed inhibitory activity against Hela cells, with insignificant differences. Moreover, the results indicated higher protein, lipids, and fatty acids mucus content of E. desertorum extract than those of H. aspersa mucus extract. Both snail slimes' obtained different biological activities, and amino acid contents could be related to their specific functions and beneficial for medical applications, especially antihyperpigmentation.

The Mediterranean region is a biodiversity hotspot. Mollusks represent the second most diverse phylum, with high species richness, endemism, and significant numbers of threatened species. The non-marine species are an especially vulnerable group. New taxa are frequently described although the descriptions often lack biological support. This is true for Helicella candoni Thach, 2018, originally described from Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, Spain. Thatch (2018) considered H. candoni to be similar to Xerotricha madritensis (Rambur, 1868) but the comparison was made on the basis of basic conchological characters. The present study analyzed topotypes of X. madritensis and H. candoni using integrative taxonomy to evaluate the relationship of the two taxa and their status within Helicella A. Férussac, 1821 and Xerotricha Monterosato, 1892 respectively. A matrix of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) yielded a total of 618 bp. Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses showed that H. candoni and X. madritensis clustered closely together along with Helicella itala. Mean sequence divergence for COI between H. candoni and X. madritensis was 1.42 %. Both taxa are similar in shell shape and colour. Genitalia dimensions of H. condoni were very similar to those of X. madritensis. These data indicate that H. candoni is a junior synonym of X. madritensis. The phylogenetic analyses showed that, despite its morphological similarities, X. madritensis is a species of Helicella instead of Xerotricha.

Background: Herein, we attempted to obtain detailed data on the distribution of the species of Drymaeus (Mesembrinus) in Brazil, using biodiversity databases, malacological collections and literature as sources of occurrence records. We provided a catalogue of species, along with distribution maps. We also estimated the suitable distribution of Drymaeus (Mesembrinus) interpunctus using the maximum entropy approach. A detailed description of the anatomy of the soft parts of this species was provided, with new data on the pallial system. Materials and Methods: For each species we provided information on the compiled data associated with museum collections and the literature. Distribution maps including geographic boundaries, Brazilian biomes and altitude were made with QGIS software 3.16.10 Hannover. For niche modelling, nineteen bioclimatic variables and a topographic variable were used as predictors. The models were performed with MaxEnt version 3.3.3k. Results: Most of the species are represented by scarce material in malacological collections; for some species, these records correspond to type material, indicating that they have not been recollected. Most of the species were represented by shells making anatomical comparison and DNA analysis difficult, limiting our ability to provide new criteria for species delimitation. Our results allowed us to expand the known distribution area for three species, Drymaeus dutaillyi, D. gereti and D. oreades, with new occurrence records in Brazil. The MaxEnt model showed a thin area of high suitability to D. (M.) interpunctus in the Southeastern Brazil, corresponding to the Atlantic Forest. Minimum temperature of the coldest month and mean temperature of coldest quarter were the variables that most influenced the development of the model. Discussion: Drymaeus interpunctus was described based on specimens collected in Brazil without mention to the exact localities. Herein the new records from databases allowed to expand the known geographic distribution for this species and to infer its potential distribution. Although the type locality of D. interpunctus is in Brazil, the anatomy of the soft parts of specimens from this country was not previously described. The anatomy of the reproductive system of the specimens analyzed herein mostly corresponds to a previous description for specimens from Paraguay, except for the absence of penial sheath and the relative length of the bursa copulatrix duct. The results of niche modeling showed a thin area of high suitability for D. interpunctus and a vast area of moderate suitability, indicating that this species present a niche breadth that favors its occurrence in a range of different biomes, including less suitable areas. Conclusion: The small number of records obtained for most of the species and their restricted ranges associated with habitat destruction may indicate that they are of conservation concern.

The giant African snail (Order Stylommatophora: Family Achatinidae), Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822), is the most significant and invasive land snail pest. The ecological adaptability of this snail involves high growth rate, reproductive capacity, and shell and mucus production, driven by several biochemical processes and metabolism. The available genomic information for A. fulica provides excellent opportunities to hinder the underlying processes of adaptation, mainly carbohydrate and glycan metabolic pathways toward the shell and mucus formation. The authors analysed the 1.78 Gb draft genomic contigs of A. fulica to identify enzyme-coding genes and reconstruct biochemical pathways related to the carbohydrate and glycan metabolism using a designed bioinformatic workflow. Three hundred and seventy-seven enzymes involved in the carbohydrate and glycan metabolic pathways were identified based on the KEGG pathway reference in combination with protein sequence comparison, structural analysis, and manual curation. Fourteen complete pathways of carbohydrate metabolism and seven complete pathways of glycan metabolism supported the nutrient acquisition and production of the mucus proteoglycans. Increased copy numbers of amylases, cellulases, and chitinases highlighted the snail advantage in food consumption and fast growth rate. The ascorbate biosynthesis pathway identified from the carbohydrate metabolic pathways of A. fulica was involved in the shell biomineralisation process in association with the collagen protein network, carbonic anhydrases, tyrosinases, and several ion transporters. Thus, our bioinformatic workflow was able to reconstruct carbohydrate metabolism, mucus biosynthesis, and shell biomineralisation pathways from the A. fulica genome and transcriptome data. These findings could reveal several evolutionary advantages of the A. fulica snail, and will benefit the discovery of valuable enzymes for industrial and medical applications.

The stylommatophoran land-snail genus Corilla is endemic to Sri Lanka and India's Western Ghats. On the basis of habitat distribution and shell morphology, the 10 extant Sri Lankan species fall into two distinct groups, lowland and montane. Here, we use phylogenetic analyses of restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) data and ancestral-state reconstructions of habitat association and shell morphology to clarify the systematics and evolution of Sri Lankan Corilla. Our dataset consists of 9 species of Corilla. Phylogenetic analyses were based on 88 assemblies (9,604-4,132,850 bp) generated by the RADseq assembler ipyrad, using four parameter combinations and different levels of missing data. Trees were inferred using a maximum likelihood (ML) approach. Ancestral states were reconstructed using maximum parsimony (MP) and ML approaches, with 1 binary state character analysed for habitat association (lowland vs montane) and 6 binary state characters analysed for shell morphology (shape, colour, lip width, length of upper palatal folds, orientation of upper palatal folds and collabral sculpture). Over a wide range of missing data (40-87 % missing individuals per locus) and assembly sizes (62,279-4,132,850 bp), nearly all trees conformed to one of two topologies (A and B), most relationships were strongly supported and total branch support approached the maximal value. Apart from the position of Corilla odontophora 'south', topologies A and B showed similar, well-resolved relationships at and above the species level. Our study agrees with the shell-based taxonomy of C. adamsi, C. beddomeae, C. carabinata, C. colletti and C. humberti (all maximally supported as monophyletic species). It shows that C. erronea and C. fryae constitute a single relatively widespread species (for which the valid name is C. erronea) and that the names C. gudei and C. odontophora each apply to at least two distinct, yet conchologically-cryptic species. The MP and ML ancestral-state reconstructions yielded broadly similar results and provide firm evidence that diversification in Sri Lankan Corilla has involved evolutionary convergence in the shell morphology of lowland lineages, with a pale shell and wide lip having evolved on at least two separate occasions (in C. carabinata and C. colletti) from montane ancestors having a dark, narrow-lipped shell.

The glass clover snail, Monacha cartusiana (M. cartusiana) is one of the most seriously impacting economic animal pests spreading across Egypt which inflicts severe damages to the agriculture. A green route is developed by deploying an abundant Rosemary plant leaves aqueous extract to synthesize ZnO and F-doped ZnO (F-ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) that display high molluscicidal activities against the M. cartusiana land snails via leaf dipping and contact techniques. The effect of lethal concentrations, that kills 50% of exposed snails (LC50) value of the treatments, is examined on the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), enzymes, total protein (TP), total lipids (TL) and cholesterol level of snails, including the histopathological evaluation of the digestive gland and foot of M. Cartusiana. Their molluscicidal activity as poisonous baits under field conditions is also evaluated and compared to the recommended molluscicide, Neomyl. The results show that F- doping dramatically improves the snail control capability of ZnO NPs, and promotes a considerable increase in both ALT and AST enzymes with an enhancement of TL and Cholesterol levels, but a significant decrease in TP content and ALP activity in treated snails compared to the control group. The LC50 values are found to be 1381.55 and 2197.59 ppm using the leaf dipping for F-ZnO and ZnO, while 237.51 and 245.90 ppm can be achieved using the contact technique, respectively. The greenly synthesized F-ZnO and ZnO NPs induce severe histological alterations in the digestive gland and foot of M. cartusiana, including a complete destruction of the digestive tubules. The histological evaluation of the foot of M. cartusiana exposed to ZnO, shows a rupture of the epithelial layer of the foot sole, while F- ZnO NPs causes the folds of the foot becoming deeper and the rupture of epithelial layer. Our field experiments further demonstrate that F-ZnO achieves 60.08% reduction, while ZnO attains 56.39% diminution in snail population compared to the commercial, Neomyl (69.55%), exhibiting great potentials in controlling the harmful land snail populations.

Salween River basin's karst ecosystems in southeastern Myanmar remain largely unexplored and are likely to harbour a high terrestrial snail diversity that are often associated with high levels of snail endemism. Here, an outstanding group of new karst-associated terrestrial snails, Burmochlamys gen. nov., are discovered. A study of the comparative morphological and anatomical data reveals that the reproductive tract and radula of this new genus are closely related to the helicarionid genus Sophina Benson, 1859 but shell morphology (shape, size, and sculpture) and mantle extensions are distinct from the latter genus. Burmochlamys gen. nov. now consists of four known nominal species, B.cassidula comb. nov., B.cauisa comb. nov., B.perpaula comb. nov., and B.poongee comb. nov., and five new species; B.albida sp. nov., B.fasciola sp. nov., B.moulmeinica sp. nov., B.versicolor sp. nov., and B.whitteni sp. nov. The highlight is that the members of the new genus show site-specific endemism, being restricted to karstic habitat islands of the Salween River basin. In addition, the discovery supports that the unique and complex structure of Salween River basin's karst ecosystems are habitats in which the terrestrial malacofauna have speciated and become endemic.

Environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils requires bioindicators that allow the assessment of bioavailability and toxicity of chemicals. Although many bioassays can determine the ecotoxicity of soil samples in the laboratory, few are available and standardized for on-site application. Bioassays based on specific threshold values that assess the in situ and ex situ bioavailability and risk of metal(loid)s and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils to the land snail Cantareus aspersus have never been simultaneously applied to the same soils. The aims of this study were to compare the results provided by in situ and ex situ bioassays and to determine their respective importance for environmental risk assessment. The feasibility and reproducibility of the in situ bioassay were assessed using an international ring test. This study used five plots located at a former industrial site and six laboratories participated in the ring test. The results revealed the impact of environmental parameters on the bioavailability of metal(loid)s and PAHs to snails exposed in the field to structured soils and vegetation compared to those exposed under laboratory conditions to soil collected from the same field site (excavated soils). The risk coefficients were generally higher ex situ than in situ, with some exceptions (mainly due to Cd and Mo), which might be explained by the in situ contribution of plants and humus layer as sources of exposure of snails to contaminants and by climatic parameters. The ring test showed good agreement among laboratories, which determined the same levels of risk in most of the plots. Comparison of the bioavailability to land snails and the subsequent risk estimated in situ or ex situ highlighted the complementarity between both approaches in the environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils, namely, to guide decisions on the fate and future use of the sites (e.g., excavation, embankments, and land restoration). Terrestrial snails that live in hot and dry climates have developed strategies to cope with high summer temperatures. Several species estivate during the warmest months of the years by resting on vertical supports, typically in groups. Understanding how snails choose their estivation sites and aggregate may lead to the development of new management tools in areas where these snails are invasive. Here, we investigated the preferences of four snail species for vertical supports varying in widths and heights under laboratory and field conditions, and tested whether the presence of conspecifics or snails of other species affected these preferences. The results show that the snails strongly preferred wider supports in laboratory dual-choice tests, and one species (Theba pisana) showed a consistent preference for taller supports as well. These results were confirmed in the field, where more snails were found on wider and taller supports 24 h after being placed in test quadrats. The percentage of snails found in groups on a support was strongly density-dependent. The presence of conspecifics or their mucus did not affect the choices of the snails, nor did the presence of snails of other species or their mucus. Taken together, these results could lead to the development of attractive supports that could be used to mass-capture snails in the field.

Meat is a vital source of nutrients for human wellbeing and health; however, recent studies suggest a decline in meat preference as a protein source due to some health problems associated with meat intake. This study evaluates the levels of essential elements (Mn, Mg, P, Ca, K, Cu, Na, Zn and Fe) and proximate composition (protein, fat, moisture, carbohydrate, fibre and ash) of three snail species namely; Achatina achatina, Achatina fulica and Archachatina marginata species from the Kumasi Central Market. The mineral content and proximate composition of the three land snail species' shell and meat were analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and other Standard Methods of Analysis. The study revealed that the three snail species differed in the composition of significant nutrients and trace elements in meat. It is evident from this study that the consumption of snail meat can promote good human health, with Archachatina marginata having the best nutritional value. In the meat from the three snail species, a strong significant positive correlation between Ca and P levels was observed, and the Cu and Fe (p < 0.05). In both the proximate and mineral analysis, each meat parameter was correspondingly higher than that of the shell for all the snail species, except for ash and Ca contents. The estimated daily intakes of Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu were lower compared with the tolerable daily intake, suggesting that the essential elements are at acceptable levels. Therefore, consumers of these land snails will gain the benefits of the proximate and mineral constituents. The shells can also be utilised as food supplements for livestock and eliminate the burden of managing snail shell waste.

Ecological release is often attributed to the rapid adaptive diversification of phenotypic traits. However, it is not well understood how natural selection changes its strength and direction through the process of ecological release. Herein, we demonstrated how shell colour of the Japanese land snail Euhadra peliomphala simodae has diversified via a shift in natural selection due to ecological release after migration from the mainland to an island. This snail's shell colour diversified on the island due to disruptive selection after migration from the mainland. We used trail camera traps to identify the cause of natural selection on both the mainland and the island. We then conducted a mark-recapture experiment while collecting microhabitat use data. In total, we captured and marked around 1,700 snails on the mainland, some of which were preyed upon by an unknown predator. The trail camera traps showed that the predator is the large Japanese field mouse Apodemus speciosus, and the predatory frequency was higher on the mainland than on the island. However, this predation did not correlate with shell colour. Microhabitat use on the island was more extensive than on the mainland, with snails on the island using both ground and arboreal microhabitats. A Bayesian estimation showed that the stabilizing selection on shell colour came from factors other than predation. Our results suggest that the course of natural selection was modified due to ecological release after migration from the mainland, explaining one cause of the phenotypic diversification.

The adults and larvae of some groups in the coleopteran family Carabidae are known to prey on snails (Mollusca: Gastropoda). Most species of the carabid tribe Licinini are believed to feed on live snails. However, the snail-eating behavior of only a few species has been studied. Whether adults of the licinine genus Badister can prey on live snails was tested by providing 155 live snails of 20 species (eleven terrestrial and nine aquatic species) to adults of Badister pictus Bates, 1873, and observing their behavior under laboratory conditions. Six of the 20 snail species have an operculum that can close the aperture of the shell. Each B. pictus adult attacked all of the snails provided. Badister pictus successfully preyed on ten terrestrial and six aquatic snail species. These beetles used their strikingly asymmetrical mandibles to break the dextral shells along the dorsal part of the whorls from the outer lip of the aperture towards the apex, allowing subsequent consumption of the soft bodies. However, 41.9% of snails could not be eaten by B. pictus adults. The rate of predation success by B. pictus decreased with increasing shell size and thickness of snails. In addition, the presence of an operculum decreased the rate of predation success by B. pictus. The results show that the shell size, thickness, and operculum of some snail species could play important roles in preventing B. pictus mandibles from breaking the shells. Therefore, Badister beetles may exert selective pressure on the evolution of defensive shell structures in small-sized snails.

OBJECTIVE: Snails secrete different types of mucus that serve several functions, and are increasingly being exploited for medical and cosmetic applications. In this study, we explored the protein pattern and compared the biological properties of the mucus secreted from the mantle collar and foot of two snail species, Lissachatina fulica and Hemiplecta distincta. RESULT: Protein profile showed a different pattern between the two species and between the two secretory parts. The mantle-specific protein bands were further characterized and among them was an antibacterial protein, achacin. Accordingly, the mucus from the mantle exhibited the higher antibacterial activity than that from the foot in both snail species. The mucus from H. distincta, first reported here, also showed antibacterial properties, but with a lower activity compared to that for L. fulica. Snail mucus also exhibited anti-tyrosinase activity and antioxidant activity but with no significant difference between the foot and mantle mucus. These results indicate some different protein compositions and biological activities of snail slime from the mantle and foot, which might be associated with their specific functions in the animal and are useful for medical applications.

There are currently eleven Geotrochus and four Trochomorpha species in Sabah. The primary diagnostic character that separates the two genera is the intensity of sculpture on the shell upper surface. All Trochomorpha species have a coarse nodular sculpture while Geotrochus species has a non-nodular sculpture or smooth shell. However, it is known that shell characters are often evolutionary labile with high plasticity in response to environmental factors. Hence, identifying the phylogenetic and ecological determinants for the shell characters will shed light on the shell-based taxonomy. This study aims to estimate the phylogenetic relationship between Geotrochus and Trochomorpha species in Sabah based in two mitochondrial genes (COI, 16S) and one nuclear gene (ITS) and also to examine the influence of temperature, elevation and annual precipitation on the coarseness of shell upper surface sculpture and shell sizes of the species of both genera. Additionally, we also investigated the phylogenetic signal of the shell characters. The phylogenetic analysis showed that Geotrochus and Trochomorpha species are not reciprocally monophyletic. The phylogenetic signal test suggested that shell size and upper surface sculpture are homoplastic, and these shell traits are strongly influenced by elevation and annual precipitation, particularly at the cloud zone of Mount Kinabalu. The highland species of both genera have a coarser shell surface than lowland species. The shell and aperture width decrease with increasing elevation and annual precipitation. In the view of finding above, the current taxonomy of Geotrochus and Trochmorpha in this region and elsewhere that based on shell characters need to be revised with sufficient specimens throughout the distribution range of the two genera.

Knowledge of Thai semislugs remains scarce, especially the dancing semislug genus Cryptosemelus. Prior to the present study, only a single species has been recognized with little available information. To address this knowledge gap, we surveyed for semislugs in western and southern Thailand, which yielded three species belonging to the genus Cryptosemelus. The little-known type species C.gracilis is redescribed herein, including a comparison with the type specimens. Two additional species, C.betarmon sp. nov. and C.tigrinus sp. nov., are described as new to science. All three species are characterized by differences in their genital anatomy, especially with respect to anatomical details of the penis, epiphallus, and spermatophore. In addition, C.tigrinus sp. nov. differs from C.gracilis and C.betarmon sp. nov. in the mantle color pattern.
