The impacts of climate change on the development of insects are of great concern due to potential alterations in population dynamics and pest pressure. The carrot weevil, Listronotus oregonensis, is a major agricultural pest, and its development is influenced by temperature and photoperiod. In this study, our aim was to investigate the impact of temperature increases on the voltinism and reproductive diapause of the carrot weevil under field conditions and bioclimatic models. Field observations were conducted over two growing seasons using structures that allowed for temperature increases. The developmental stages of the carrot weevil, including female reproductive status, oviposition and larval stage, were monitored weekly to measure the proportion of individuals undergoing an additional generation. Concurrently, bioclimatic models were used to simulate the probability of a second generation under current (1981-2010) and future (2041-2070) climates, considering a lower and a higher change in emission scenarios. Results showed that rising temperatures led to an increase in the proportion of carrot weevils undergoing inhibition of the reproductive diapause and a higher number of eggs laid in the field. The models indicated a substantial rise in the probability of a second generation developing, from 24% to 37% to 62%-99% under current and future climates, respectively. These findings demonstrate the potential for significant alterations in carrot weevil population dynamics, resulting in increased pest pressure on crops. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of these findings and to develop effective adaptation measures to mitigate the negative impacts of global warming on insect populations and agriculture.

The aim of the study was to compare the relative gene expression of Haemonchus contortus P-glycoprotein genes (Hco-pgp) between fourth (L4), infective (L3), and transitory infective (xL3) larval stages as laboratory models to study ivermectin (IVM) resistance. The H. contortus resistant to IVM (IVMr) and susceptible to IVM (IVMs) strains were used to develop xL3in vitro culture and to infect Meriones unguiculatus (gerbils) to collect L4 stages. Morphometric differences were evaluated from 25 individuals of H. contortus from each strain. Relative gene expression from xL3 and L4 was determined between comparison of IVMr stages and from IVMr vs IVMs stages. Seven Hco-pgp genes (1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 16) were analysed by RT-qPCR using L3 stage as control group, per strain, and GAPDH and ß-tubulin as constitutive genes. Morphological changes were confirmed between xL3 and L4 developing oral shape, oesophagus, and intestinal tube. In addition, the body length and width showed statistical differences (p < 0.05). The Hco-pgp1, 2, 3, and 4 genes (p < 0.05) were upregulated from 7.1- to 463.82-fold changes between IVMr stages, and Hco-pgp9 (13.12-fold) and Hco-pgp10 (13.56-fold) genes showed differences between L4 and xL3, respectively. The comparative study between IVMr vs IVMs strains associated to xL3 and L4 displayed significant upregulation for most of the Hco-pgp genes among 4.89-188.71 fold-change. In conclusion, these results suggest the use of H. contortus xL3 and L4 as suitable laboratory models to study IVMr associated with Hco-pgp genes to contribute to the understanding of anthelmintic resistance.

Tebuthiuron (TBU), a phenylurea herbicide, is widely applied in agricultural and non-agricultural soils. Because TBU resists degradation, it can contaminate water and reach the biota once it is released into the environment. However, the potential toxic effects of TBU on aquatic developing organisms have been poorly studied. By taking advantage of the early-life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio), we have combined morphological, biochemical, behavioural, and molecular approaches to investigate the developmental toxicity triggered by environmentally relevant concentrations (from 0.1 to 1000 µg/L) of TBU. Exposure to TBU did not elicit morphological abnormalities but it significantly delayed hatching. In addition, TBU altered the frequency of tail coils in one-day post-fertilization (dpf) old embryos. Moreover, TBU exposure during four days significantly inhibited the whole body AChE activity of larvae. At the molecular level, TBU did not significantly affect the mRNA levels of four genes (elavl3, gfap, gap43, and shha) that play key roles during the neurodevelopment of zebrafish. By assessing the motor responses to repeated light-dark stimuli, 6 dpf larvae exposed to TBU displayed hyperactivity, showing greater travelling distance during the dark periods. Our categorization of swimming speed revealed an interesting finding - after the light was turned off, the exposed larvae abandoned the freezing mode (<2 mm/s) and travelled mainly at cruising speed (2-20 mm/s), showing that the larval hyperactivity did not translate into higher swimming velocity. Overall, our results offer new insights into the TBU toxicity to developing organisms, namely effects in AChE activity and hyperactivity, providing support data for future studies considering environmental risk assessment of this herbicide.

Following the recovery of the metacercariae of a brachylaimid trematode from the rectum of the frog Amnirana galamensis from Ase in Delta State, Nigeria, we investigated the land snails in the locality to establish their roles in the life cycle of the parasite. Of the four land snails investigated from Ase (Limicolaria aurora, Archachatina marginata, A. papyracea, and Thapsia oscitans), and a Limicolaria sp. from Tombia (Bayelsa State), four harboured larval stages of the bracylaimid. Only L. aurora and the Limicolaria sp. harboured cercariogenous sporocysts and are therefore presumed to serve as the first intermediate hosts of the parasite. Metacercariae were recovered from the Limicolaria spp. and the Archachatina spp. and so serve as the second intermediate hosts. No larval brachylaimids were recovered from T. oscitans. Metacercariae from L. aurora and A. papyracea were cultured in vivo in 14 days old chicks of Gallus gallus domesticus. Parasites recovered from the experimental hosts 7, 14, 21 and 28 days post-infection, showed progressive development of the parasite with the full maturity attained by the 28th day post-infection. Adult parasites recovered from the experimental birds and from free range chicken purchased from Ase and Tombia showed that the brachylaimid infecting these birds was Postharmostomum ntowi, a parasite previously reported in domestic chicken in Ghana. There is need to investigate the host range of the parasite in Nigeria as this trematode is also known to infect the Guinea fowl in Ghana.

In a seasonal environment, variation in larval phenotype and developmental plasticity allow crustacean larvae to maximise survival by lengthening or shortening their development. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of temperature, laying season and their interaction on larval developmental pathways (larval instars and larval stages). We monitored the different larval stages and calculated the number of larval instars reached during the development of winter and summer larvae of Palaemon serratus incubated at 12, 16 or 20 °C. We observed a great variability in the larval development (6-13 larval instars and 6 to 11 larval stages). A higher temperature decreases the development time and the number of larval instars. At a given temperature, the development time of winter and summer larvae was not different. Two larval stages were considered supernumerary (zoea 4 and 6), as they were more frequent at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, some larvae started to develop pleopods as early as the third instar, larval stage which had never been described (named here zoea 3'). This phenomenon was more common in winter larvae than in summer larvae. These results provide new insights into the expression of developmental plasticity in decapod larvae.

Arenicola marina, a marine benthic polychaete, is widespread on sandy beaches in Europe and considered as an ecosystem engineer despite commonly used as bait by fishermen. Data regarding the bioenergetics of the lugworm larval stages are still incomplete. Trochophore is initially lecithotroph and then becomes planktotroph while growing as metatrochophore on subtidal area, a quite stable daily temperature environment compared with the foreshore, where juveniles and adult live, with daily temperature fluctuating up to 15°C. These discrepancies in temperature ranges may influence the temperature corrections (TCs) that control metabolic rates during the life cycle of A. marina. We carried out laboratory experiments in microcosms by inducing artificial spawning of lugworms, and then undertaken in vitro fertilization to obtain embryos and, finally, to follow, the larval development up to 10 segments with chaetae for 50 days under three temperature conditions (13°C, 15°C and 17°C) and two food conditions ('fed' and 'non-fed'). The first feeding ('birth') of A. marina larvae was deciphered anatomically for a size between 450 and 500 µm and described at 17 days post-fertilization for larvae reared at 15°C and 17°C. Using a biphasic model with a von Bertalanffy growth before 'birth' and an exponential growth after 'birth', among the three temperature treatments, the 15°C condition exhibited the best larval performance. TC based on embryonic and larval metabolic rates gave an Arrhenius temperature of ~6661 K and a higher boundary temperature tolerance range of ~294.5 K. Both temperature values differ from those calculated from TC based mostly on juvenile and adult metabolic rates. We claim to use two sets of Arrhenius temperatures according to the life history stages of A. marina while using Dynamic Energy Budget model. This model was developed initially in order to manage the conservation of the lugworm species.

Schistosomiasis, also known as snail fever or bilharziasis, is a worm infection caused by trematode called schistosomes that affects humans and animals worldwide. Schistosomiasis endemically exists in developing countries. Inflammatory responses elicited in the early phase of infection represent the rate limiting step for parasite migration and pathogenesis and could be a valuable target for therapeutic interventions. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and interleukin (IL)-10 were found to be differentially affected in case of immune-modulation studies and cytokine analysis of hosts infected with either normal or radiation-attenuated parasite (RA) which switches off the development of an effective immune response against the migrating parasite in the early phase of schistosomiasis. Normal parasites induce predominantly a T helper 2 (Th2)-type cytokine response (IL-4 and IL-5) which is essential for parasite survival; here, we discuss in detail the downstream effects and cascades of inflammatory signaling of PGE2 and IL10 induced by normal parasites and the effect of blocking PGE2 receptors. We suggest that by selectively constraining the production of PGE2 during vaccination or therapy of susceptible persons or infected patients of schistosomiasis, this would boost IL-12 and reduce IL-10 production leading to a polarization toward the anti-worm Thl cytokine synthesis (IL-2 and Interferon (IFN)-γ).

Cercarial activity and survival are crucial traits for the transmission of trematodes. Temperature is particularly important, as faster depletion of limited cercarial energy reserves occurs at high temperatures. Seasonal climate conditions in high latitude regions may be challenging to complete trematode life cycle during the 6-month ice-free period, but temperature effects on the activity and survival of freshwater cercariae have not been previously identified. After experimentally simulating natural subarctic conditions during warmer and colder months (13 and 6°C), a statistical approach identifying changes in the tendency of cercarial activity loss and mortality data was used to detect differences in three trematode genera, represented by four taxa (Diplostomum spp., Apatemon spp., small- and large-sized Plagiorchis spp.). A strong temperature-dependent response was identified in both activity loss and mortality in all taxa, with Diplostomum spp. cercariae showing the most gradual changes compared to other taxa. Furthermore, whilst activity loss and mortality dynamics could not be divided into 'fish- vs invertebrate-infecting cercariae' groups, the detected taxa-specific responses in relation to life-history traits indicate the swimming behaviour of cercariae and energy allocation among larvae individuals as the main drivers. Cercariae exploit the short transmission window that allows a stable continuance of trematodes' life cycles in high-latitude freshwater ecosystems.

Tetrabromobisphenol A-TBBPA, a widely used brominated flame retardant detected in aquatic environments, is considered a potential endocrine disruptor-ED for its reproductive/developmental effects in vertebrates. In aquatic invertebrates, the modes of action of most EDs are largely unknown, due to partial knowledge of the mechanisms controlling neuroendocrine functions. In the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis, TBBPA has been previously shown to affect larval development in the 48 h larval toxicity assay at environmental concentrations. In this work, the effects of TBBPA were further investigated at different times post-fertilization. TBBPA, from 1 µg/L, affected shell biogenesis at 48 hours post fertilization-hpf, as shown by phenotypic and SEM analysis. The mechanisms of action of TBBPA were investigated at concentrations of the same order of magnitude as those found in highly polluted coastal areas (10 µg/L). At 28-32 hpf, TBBPA significantly affected deposition of both the organic matrix and CaCO3 in the shell. TBBPA also altered expression of shell-related genes from 24 to 48 hpf, in particular of tyrosinase, a key enzyme in shell matrix remodeling. At earlier stages (24 hpf), TBBPA affected the development of dopaminergic, serotoninergic and GABAergic systems, as shown by in situ hybridization-ISH and immunocytochemistry. These data contribute draw adverse outcome pathways-AOPs, where TBBPA affects the synthesis of neutrotransmitters involved in key events (neurodevelopment and shell biogenesis), resulting in phenotypic changes on individuals (delayed or arrested development) that might lead to detrimental consequences on populations.

This work introduces new morphological and molecular information on the filaroid nematode Setaria cervi (Rudolphi, 1819) obtained from 13 infected game ungulates out of 96 dissected. The hosts comprised the following: a single moose (Alces alces), ten red deer (Cervus elaphus) and two sika deer (Cervus nippon) originating from the western and northern regions of the Czech Republic. Based on the complete sequences of the gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), all 20 females and four males belonged to the species S. cervi. We detected three developmental female stages (adult fertile females, juvenile L5 females and L4 female larvae) differing in size and some morphological traits as the subtle structure of peribuccal crown and shape and features of tail knob. Such differences were described in detail for the first time. The phylogenetic relationships within the family Onchocercidae have been evaluated using new information on the cox1 sequence of S. cervi (maximum likelihood method, GTR + I + G model). In accordance with the latest phylogenetic studies, the present analysis confirmed the ancient separation of the subclass Setariinae from the remaining two onchocercid lineages Dirofilariinae and Onchocerinae.

This article studies the morphological remodeling of olfactory organs in the fire salamander (Salamandridae, Caudata), from the larval stages of ontogeny to the adult and throughout the course of the annual cycle. The fire salamander exhibits adaptations to the aquatic environment during premetamorphic life and terrestrial adaptations after metamorphosis. During adulthood, the annual activity of this species is divided into three seasonal periods: a breeding period, a nonbreeding period, and hibernation. We observed significant differences in morphology of olfactory organs between developmental stages as well as between each period within the annual cycle. For the first time in caudates, we examined the morphology of olfactory organs during the winter period (wintering larvae, hibernating adults). The results show that the remodeling of olfactory organs during the life of the fire salamander occurs both on macro- and micromorphological levels. Macromorphological ontogenetic variability includes the shape of the main olfactory chamber (MOC) and the distribution of olfactory epithelium (OE) in the MOC and in the vomeronasal organ (VNO). In larvae, the vomeronasal epithelium (VNE) is in a separate cavity, while in the post-metamorphic stages of ontogeny, the VNE occurs in the diverticulum of the MOC. In adult fire salamanders, both olfactory organs are most developed during the breeding season and reduced during hibernation. The VNE and OE in the MOC are also reduced during hibernation. Micro-morphological changes included different types/subtypes of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in the OE in particular stages of ontogeny and periods within the annual cycle, for example, ciliate ORNs are present in the VNE only in the larval stages and giant ORNs occur only in nonbreeding adults. Also, there was a variable set of types of olfactory supporting cells in the VNO of the fire salamander during pre- and postmetamorphic life stages.

The complete larval development of Petrolisthes tuberculatus (including two zoeal stages and the megalopa) is described and illustrated in detail for the first time, based on laboratory-reared material. In order to allow the differentiation of specimens from plankton samples, the larval stages of P. tuberculatus are compared with those known for other porcellanid crabs from Chilean waters (Allopetrolisthes angulosus, Petrolisthes granulosus, P. laevigatus and P. violaceus). As expected, this comparison lead to the inclusion of P. tuberculatus within the "sección Porcellanina" together with the other Chilean species of porcellanids.

We investigated the seasonal and interannual changes in diversity, abundance, and prevalence of chaetognaths and their parasites collected monthly during 1996-1998 in the Mexican Central Pacific. We tested the hypothesis of a positive relationship between abundance and species richness of chaetognaths and their parasites, and investigated the influence of the 1997-1998 El Niño event on this host-parasite interaction. Of the 9 chaetognath species collected in the present study, only 7 were found to be parasitized. Of 78154 chaetognath specimens collected, 790 were parasitized (1% prevalence) with at least 1 type of epibiont (cysts, perhaps protists) and 6 types of endoparasites: protists (apicomplexans, dinoflagellates, and ciliates), digeneans, cestodes, acanthocephalans, nematodes, and other unidentified endoparasites. Cysts, digeneans, and cestodes were the most abundant parasites. Mean intensity ranged from 1-4 endoparasites and from 1-21 epibionts host-1. Zonosagitta bedoti and Flaccisagitta enflata were the most abundant chaetognath species and had the highest parasite diversity. Mesosagitta minima and Parasagitta euneritica had the highest parasite prevalence (>2%). A 2-way cluster analysis defined sampling month groups as before, during, and after the 1997-1998 El Niño. The highest abundances of chaetognaths and parasites were associated with a high thermal stratification index, salinity, and mixed layer depth. We conclude that there is a positive, non-linear correlation between the abundance of chaetognaths and their parasites. Although El Niño decreased the abundance and diversity of chaetognaths throughout the time series, the abundance and diversity of their parasites were not significantly different among hydro-climatic periods, suggesting that host abundance must decrease orders of magnitude to influence host availability for parasites.

A total of 120 tissue samples (Rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, small intestine and large intestine) were collected from slaughter houses in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts and five samples from necropsy room at Department of Veterinary Pathology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Overall prevalence of GI parasites was 52.00%. Among the positive samples, single infection was found to be more (53.84%) than themixed infection (46.15%). Out of which, oesophagostomosis was 17.00% and found as single infection. In oesophagostomosis, significant gross lesions observed in the small and large intestine were multiple small to large, round to irregular, hard, fibrotic, raised nodules. The wall of the large intestine was greatly thickened and oedematous and the nodules were seen projecting into the lumen and mucosal surface was intact. On histopathological examination, ileum of sheep showed parasitic nodules with central baso-eosinophilic necrotic area, larval stages in the necrotic area, surrounded by layers of inflammatory cells and finally encapsulated in a thick fibrous connective tissue capsule. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with Vimentin showed intense cytoplasmic positive signals DAB Brown. PCR was carried out targeting ITS2 regions of the O. columbianum and O. venulosum. DNA isolated from both the faecal eggs and adult worms showed good amplification.

The complete larval development of Pinnaxodes chilensis (including four zoeal stages and a megalopa stage) is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. The descriptions are based on laboratory-reared larvae obtained from ovigerous females found inside specimens of the sea urchin Loxechinus albus collected in the coast of Valparaíso, Chile. In order to allow the correct differentiation of specimens from plankton samples, the larval stages of P. chilensis are compared with those from other Pinnotheridae species, whose larval development is known for the Chilean continental waters (Calyptraeotheres politus). The morphological characters described for P. chilensis larvae, as well as the comparison with the remaining larval development descriptions available for the genus Pinnaxodes, are used to discuss the heterogeneity within this genus.

Resumen El nematodo C. elegans se estableció desde I960, gracias al biólogo sudafricano Sydney Brenner, como un organismo modelo en investigación. Sus cualidades biológicas permiten mejorar la visión y comprensión de patologías en los seres humanos y otros seres pluricelulares; además, sus fenotipos claros y observables lo convierten en un organismo adecuado para el estudio básico de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, inmunológicas y procesos cancerígenos. Objetivo. Analizar las características fenotípicas de la cepa silvestre N2 de C. elegans para su posterior uso como modelo de tamizaje en el laboratorio de Biotecnología y Genética (Universidad Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca). Materiales y Métodos. El nematodo fue cultivado y crecido en el medio NGM con la cepa E. coli OP50. La cepa N2 fue sincronizada para obtener huevos y posteriormente larvas L1. Se estandarizaron los ensayos de longevidad, reproducción, longitud y estrés térmico. Resultados. La caracterización fenotípica de la cepa N2 de C. elegans presentó: una longevidad de 16 a 22 días, una reproducción promedio de 225 crías, la longitud del nematodo fue de 1100±50 μm y la supervivencia bajo estrés térmico evaluada en las dos etapas de desarrollo del nematodo es muy reducida a 37°C en comparación de 35°C; además, los nematodos fueron más resistentes al primer día de adulto joven en comparación con el sexto día de adulto. Conclusiones. Los resultados aportados por este estudio permiten sugerir que las características fenotípicas del nematodo analizadas se encuentran dentro de lo reportado en la literatura, por lo cual es viable usarlo como como modelo biológico en diferentes ensayos tal como lo reportan otros estudios.


Abstract The nematode C. elegans was established since I960, thanks to the South African biologist Sydney Brenner, as a model organism in research. Their biological qualities allow to improve the vision and understanding of pathologies in human and other multicellular beings; In addition, its clear and observable phenotypes make it a suitable organism for the basic study of neurodegenerative, immunological diseases and carcinogenic processes. Objective. To analyze the phenotypic characteristics of the C. elegans N2 wild strain for later use as a screening model in the Biotechnology and Genetics Laboratory (Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca University). Materials and Methods. The nematode was grown and grown in the NGM medium with the strain E. coli OP50. The N2 strain was synchronized to obtain eggs and later L1 larvae. The tests of longevity, reproduction, length and thermal stress were standardized. Results. The phenotypic characterization of the N2 strain of C. elegans presented a longevity of 16 to 22 days, an average reproduction of 225 offspring, the length of the nematode was 1100 ± 50 μm and the survival under thermal stress evaluated in the two Development stages of the nematode is greatly reduced at 37 ° C compared to 35 ° C; In addition, nematodes were more resistant to the first day of young adult compared to the sixth day of adulthood. Conclusions. AbstractThe rice fields can provide habitats for many species of aquatic invertebrates, as insects, molluscs, crustaceans; and vertebrates, as fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, which may act as hosts in the life cycles of digenean parasites. In this context, the goal of the present study was to describe the cercariae found in Biomphalaria straminea from a rice field in Northeastern Argentina. This freshwater snail inhabits a wide variety of environments, favoring shallow, temporary and standing or slow-flowing freshwater bodies. For this study, snails were collected from the cultivated parcels and irrigated channels during the flooding periods (from the time of sowing to soon after harvesting of the rice) between December 2010 and May 2011 and December 2011 and April 2012, in a rice field from Corrientes province, one of the main rice producers of Argentina. A total of 5 510 snails were examined of which 26 were infected with three different larval trematodes belonging to Strigeidae, Furcocercaria V (0.40 %) and Furcocercaria XX (0.04 %), and Diplostomidae, Furcocercaria XIX (0.04 %). Furcocercaria XX and Furcocercaria XIX were present in one rice cultivation cycle, while Furcocercaria V was present in both rice cultivation cycles. The prevalence of the different furcocercariae was somewhat higher in the second rice cultivation cycle. The cercariae described are new records for Argentina that added to 53 cercariae previously reported for Biomphalaria spp. in different aquatic environments of country. The study of the digenean larval in rice fields is important because contribute to the knowledge of the biodiversity of these environments.


ResumenLos campos de arroz pueden proporcionar hábitats para muchas especies de invertebrados acuáticos, como insectos, moluscos, crustáceos; y vertebrados, como peces, anfibios, reptiles y aves, los cuales pueden actuar como hospedadores en los ciclos de vida de los parásitos digeneos. En este contexto, el objetivo del presente estudio fue describir las cercarias encontradas en Biomphalaria straminea de un campo de arroz en el Nordeste Argentino. Este caracol de agua dulce habita una amplia variedad de ambientes, principalmente cuerpos de agua superficiales, estancados o de flujo lento. Para este estudio, los caracoles fueron recolectados de las parcelas cultivadas y los canales de riego durante los periodos de inundación (desde la siembra hasta poco después de la cosecha del arroz) entre diciembre 2010 y Mayo 2011 y Diciembre 2011 y Abril 2012, en un campo de arroz de la provincia de Corrientes, una de las principales productoras de arroz de Argentina. Un total de 5 510 caracoles fueron examinados de los cuales 26 estuvieron infectados con tres trematodes larvales pertenecientes a Strigeidae, Furcocercaria V (0.40 %) y Furcocercaria XX (0.04 %), y Diplostomidae, Furcocercaria XIX (0.04 %). Furcocercaria XX y Furcocercaria XIX estuvieron presentes en un ciclo de cultivo de arroz, mientras que Furcocercaria V estuvo presente en ambos ciclos de cultivo. La prevalencia de las diferentes furcocercarias fue algo mayor en el segundo ciclo de cultivo de arroz. Las cercarias descritas son nuevos registros para Argentina que se adicionan a las 53 cercarias previamente registradas para Biomphalaria spp. en diferentes ambientes acuáticos del país. El estudio de digeneos larvales en los campos de arroz es importante porque contribuye al conocimiento de la biodiversidad en estos ambientes.

This study, conducted during a scientific cruise, MR15-04, aims, first, to examine species and larval/adult components of Halobates (Heteroptera: Gerridae) inhabiting the tropical Indian Ocean of 4°00' S-7°00' S, 101°00' E-103°00' E and, second, to examine the correlative relationship between precipitation just before collection and the number of sea skaters collected in November and December 2015. Near Sumatra (50 km south-west), larvae and adults of four species of Halobates (Halobates germanes White, 1883; Halobates micans Eschscholtz, 1822; Halobates princeps White, 1883; undescribed species: Halobates sp.) were collected. Adults of an undescribed species had about a 5 mm long body in a gourd-like shape. One male adult specimen of H. princeps was collected. Body length, body width, and head width was measured in all specimens of Halobates. Six larval stages were detected in all three species of sea skaters as the first finding for Heteropteran insects. There was a negative correlation between amount of precipitation for 19 h before collection and the number of Halobates individuals collected by the neuston net. Death or (positive or passive) sinking by sea skaters could be due to occasional rain fall on the sea surface.

Cercariae and metacercariae of three species of the Microphallidae Travassos, 1920 were found in snails and crustaceans from tributaries of the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia. Specimens of Maritrema brevisacciferum Shimazu et Pearson, 1991 and Microphallus minutus Johnston, 1948, which have previously been reported in Queensland, were found as cercariae in the tateid gastropod Posticobia brazieri (Smith) and as metacercariae of M. brevisacciferum in the atyid shrimp Caridina indistincta Calman and of M. minutus in the parastacid crayfish Cherax dispar Reik. Combined analysis of morphological and molecular data, based on newly generated ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA data, linked cercariae and metacercariae for both species. This is the first report of the first intermediate hosts of M. brevisacciferum and M. minutus. Infections of another unidentified microphallid metacercariae, Microphallidae gen. sp., were found in P. brazieri and C. indistincta. The sequences of metacercarial isolates from both hosts were identical. The data on the Microphallidae from Australia and species that develop in freshwater invertebrates were examined in detail.

Oestrus ovis is a botfly whose larvae cause nasal myiasis, an environmental-dependent disease in small ruminants, generating acute and chronic injuries in the cranial cavities of sheep. Chile is a country of the southernmost worldwide distribution of this parasite, and there is few information about. Whence, the objective of this study was to approximate the epidemiological situation of O. ovis infection in Chilean sheep. From December 2009 to March 2010, a total of 87 samples were obtained by necropsy for skull inspection. The larvae were collected, and microscopically identified. The prevalence in the sampled sheep was 60.9%. From those that were infected, 85.7% (18/21) of sheep were 1 to 3 years old, constituting the stratum with the highest prevalence. The difference of infection in females and males was not significant. The high risk of infection seems to be dependent upon the environmental conditions of this southern region, especially during summer when the first larval stage (L1) could be found as the evidence. Therefore, the disease should be considered as a significant problem for this kind of livestock production.
