RESUMO

This project was designed to support people to find information, resources, and evidence independently within Health Education England (now NHS England Workforce Training and Education) and allow the Knowledge Management team more time to focus on other services offered. This project aimed to pull together a number of resources in to one simple 'Quick links' page, with relevant information, resources and further training, providing people with opportunities to build on their own knowledge and skills.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Consumer health libraries connect communities to reliable and accurate health information while Little Free Libraries (LFL) provide communities globally with access to free books with a 'take one leave one' type policy. OBJECTIVES: To discuss how medical librarians used already established LFLs as outreach opportunities to provide consumer health books to rural locations in East Tennessee's Appalachia region in the United States. METHODS: Researchers reviewed the population's literacy levels, the Index of Medical Underservice scores, and the availability of established LFLs. Twenty-two established LFL locations were selected and one new LFL was built for an eye clinic. Eleven health books were purchased for each established LFL, and 33 books were purchased for the new LFL. RESULTS: Researchers went back to each location 5 months after delivery. 90% of the books were taken from the already established LFLs. Ten books were taken from the new LFL. DISCUSSION: Using already established LFLs is a great opportunity to provide relevant health information to rural communities. The new LFL allowed for a partnership between the library and a rural eye clinic. CONCLUSION: By distributing health books to already established LFLs, researchers brought relevant health information books to rural and medically underserved communities.

RESUMO

The development of phenotypes using electronic health records is a resource-intensive process. Therefore, the cataloging of phenotype algorithm metadata for reuse is critical to accelerate clinical research. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has developed a standard for phenotype metadata collection which is currently used in the VA phenomics knowledgebase library, CIPHER (Centralized Interactive Phenomics Resource), to capture over 5000 phenotypes. The CIPHER standard improves upon existing phenotype library metadata collection by capturing the context of algorithm development, phenotyping method used, and approach to validation. While the standard was iteratively developed with VA phenomics experts, it is applicable to the capture of phenotypes across healthcare systems. We describe the framework of the CIPHER standard for phenotype metadata collection, the rationale for its development, and its current application to the largest healthcare system in the United States.

RESUMO

A library to support maternal and child health programs has existed in many forms from the founding of the Children's Bureau in 1912 to the current MCH Digital Library. The overarching goal of the library remains to serve the MCH community with accurate, reliable, and timely information and resources. Like the field of MCH, championed into existence by dedicated activists and nurtured by passionate, gifted people over the decades that followed, today's library is the result of the work of an unbroken chain of individuals devoted to its cause and with a vision for its future. The library website is a critical tool for the field where MCH stakeholders can access the work and wisdom of content experts in the field. All materials, whether in print or digital, are vetted, organized, and curated by librarians devoted to providing the field of MCH with the most relevant evidence-based, implementation-focused resources, links, and tools.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bibliometric methods may be used to examine research trends, and information visualisation techniques are useful in illustrating the diffusion of knowledge and how theories are applied. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to illustrate how Orem's Self-Care Deficiency Nursing Theory (SCDNT) has been cited and applied in nursing science and beyond. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis examined scientific publications that cited Orem's nursing theory. In addition, the diffusion of SCDNT was assessed using data visualisation methods and integration scores of SCDNT versions were calculated to define trends in its theoretical usage in other scientific domains. RESULTS: The information visualisation demonstrated increased usage of SCDTN in different disciplines. Integration scores demonstrated that the scientific community still recognises and uses versions of SCDTN. DISCUSSION: Studying citation patterns helps to identify which publications are still cited and relevant, as well as illustrating the dissemination of theory. Findings may be used in the collection weeding of SCDTN book versions. CONCLUSIONS: Findings provided nursing scientists with a better conceptual understanding of SCDNT diffusion and development. For academic library managers, the findings identify which SCDNT should be retained for historical interest and curriculum needs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Faced with resource constraints, many hospital libraries have considered joint operations. This case study describes how Providence Health & Services created a single group to provide library services. METHODS: Using a holding group model, staff worked to unify more than 6,100 nonlibrary subscriptions and 14 internal library sites. RESULTS: Our library services grew by unifying 2,138 nonlibrary subscriptions and 11 library sites and hiring more library staff. We expanded access to 26,018 more patrons. CONCLUSIONS: A model with built-in flexibility allowed successful library expansion. Although challenges remain, this success points to a viable model of unified operations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This research study sought to determine the formats (print or electronic) of articles and book chapters most-preferred by first-year medical students, third-year medical students entering clinical clerkships, and incoming residents and to determine if these preferences change during the course of the medical curriculum. These trends will enable academic health sciences libraries to make appropriate collection development decisions to best cater to their user populations. METHODS: First-year medical students, third-year medical students, and incoming medical residents were asked to complete a paper survey from September 2014 to June 2015. The survey consisted of five multiple-choice questions, with two questions given space for optional short answers. Quantitative and qualitative responses were collected and calculated using Microsoft Excel. RESULTS: First-year students, third-year students, and incoming residents all preferred to read journal articles and book chapters in print, except in cases where the article or book chapter is under ten pages in length. Although print is preferred, demand for electronic articles and book chapters increases as students progress from undergraduate medical education into residency. The only category where a majority of incoming residents chose an electronic resource was which format they would give to a colleague, if the article or book chapter was critical to the care of an individual patient. CONCLUSIONS: The preference for print resources is strong across the medical curriculum, although residents show an increased preference for electronic materials when compared to first- and third-year students. Academic health sciences libraries should take these preferences into account when making decisions regarding collection development.

RESUMO

QUESTION: What to do when a major database ceases publication? SETTING: An urban, academic health sciences library with four campuses serves a university health sciences system, a college of medicine, and five other health sciences colleges. METHODS: Usage statistics of each e-book title in the resource were carefully analyzed. Purchase decisions were made based on the assessment of usage. RESULTS: Sustainable resources were acquired from other vendors, with perpetual access for library users. CONCLUSION: This systematic process of finding alternative resources is an example of librarians' persistence in acquiring perpetual electronic resources when a major resource is cancelled.

RESUMO

A method to assess library-holding journals according to their weighted citations was proposed in light of the actual needs of users for core journals, the use of library-holding journals and references by authors in different orders of precedence. The Western journal of rheumatology, highly cited by authors of Second Military Medical U-niversity, were assessed using this method, showing that this method is better than the citation analysis-based tra-ditional method in assessment of journals.
