RESUMO
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the correlation between religiosity and alcohol use among adolescents with orofacial clefts. Methods: Cross-sectional study, developed in a Brazilian public and tertiary hospital, between December 2021 and March 2022. Data collection was hybrid, and three instruments were used: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Durel Religiosity Scale, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. For statistical analysis, the following tests were used: χ2, Fisher's Exact, Mann-Whitney and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient, in addition to analyses of linear correlation strength and bivariate logistic regression. The significance level adopted for all tests was 5% (p≤0.05). Results: 370 adolescents participated, with a mean age of 15.2 years (±1.8). Among them, 23 (5.4%) used alcohol riskly or harmfully, being more frequent among male adolescents (p=0.001), those of mixed race (p=0.046), attending high school (p=0.011), with no religion (p<0.001), or who did not attend religious services (p<0.001). Levels of organizational, non-organizational and intrinsic religiosity were significantly lower among adolescents with risky or harmful alcohol use (p=0.005; p<0.001 and p=0.002, respectively). There was a moderate correlation between risky or harmful alcohol use and non-organizational (r=0.31; p=0.002) and intrinsic (r=0.36; p<0.001) religiosity. Male adolescents (p<0.001; OR=6.58), closest in age to 18 years (p<0.001; OR=1.37), and non-practitioners of religion (p<0.001; OR=6. 48) presented higher odds of risky or harmful alcohol use. Conclusions: Adolescents with higher levels of organizational and intrinsic religiosity used less alcohol, while males, closest in age to 18 years, and non-practitioners of religion presented higher odds of using alcohol riskly or harmfully.
Abstract Objective This study aimed to review literature from the past five years, focusing on the use of educational videos as a guidance tool for parents and guardians of children with lip and palate clefts. Source of data Conducted between April and July 2022, this integrative literature review was framed around the question: 'What is the evidence regarding the use of videos in health education for parents/guardians of children with cleft lip and palate? PICO strategy was used to develop the research. A literature search was undertaken across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Virtual Health Library databases. Of the eight articles included in this review, four were sourced from the PubMed database, with three published in 2021. Summary of the findings The findings indicated that YouTube videos were moderately satisfactory and met the needs of parents or legal guardians to a partial extent. The majority of the videos analyzed in this review were characterized by a moderate level of informational content. One study particularly underscored that the content of these videos only partially satisfies the requirements of the parents or legal guardians of the children. Conclusions Nevertheless, such videos are considered viable alternatives for health education, offering numerous benefits yet facing challenges, primarily due to the scarcity of information on orofacial malformations.
RESUMO
PURPOSE: Evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of the ING3 in actinic cheilitis and squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip. METHODS: Forty-five specimens of actinic cheilitis and 48 specimens of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip were submitted to immunohistochemical detection of ING3. The protein expression in different cellular sublocations was compared between the two groups, and associations with the clinicopathological variables were analyzed. A significance level of 5% was adopted for all tests. RESULTS: Deaths were significantly more frequent in tumors with a high histopathological risk score (p < 0.05). In actinic cheilitis, significant differences were found in the nucleus-cytoplasmic expression of ING3 and expression restricted to the cytoplasm with binary histopathological grading (p < 0.05). In squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing ING3 expressions with clinical and morphological parameters (p > 0.05). Nucleo-cytoplasmic ING3 expression was significantly lower in squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip when compared to actinic cheilitis (p < 0.05) and the expression restricted to the cytoplasm was significantly higher in squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that there is a marked decrease in the nuclear expression of ING3 as malignant progression occurs, indicating an impaired tumor suppressor function of this protein in actinic cheilitis and squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip.

Ultrasonography is highly accurate for evaluating soft tissues. Given that minimally invasive aesthetic procedures are on the rise, complications have become more prevalent. Thus, ultrasonography holds promise for assisting in the diagnosis and management of complications arising from these interventions. This report highlights the importance of ultrasonography in the treatment of complications caused by hyaluronic acid injection. A patient visited a dental office 24 hours after hyaluronic acid application, presenting pain and bruising in the middle and inferior thirds of the face on the right side. To evaluate blood vessels, the surgeon used Doppler-mode ultrasonography, which enabled the precise application of hyaluronidase to reestablish blood perfusion and preserve adjacent structures. Therefore, to avoid severe outcomes, such as necrosis or even amaurosis, the use of ultrasonography is suggested, improving the precision and safety of these procedures.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in lip metrics before and after facial rejuvenation treatment with hyaluronic acid-based fillers and to compare them with those of a control group using stereophotogrammetry (3D). METHODOLOGY: This study included 63 Caucasian women divided into Group C (<30 years, n=30) and Group H (>30 years, n=33), which was further divided into before (HT0) and after (HT1) lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid (HA). Eleven anthropometric landmarks were identified for linear, angular, and surface area measurements. Three photos were captured in Group C, while Group H had photos taken at T0 and T1. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk test to evaluate normality, the Kruskal-Wallis test and one-way ANOVA. Tukey's post hoc and pairwise comparison tests were performed to analyze differences between variables (P value < 0.05). RESULTS: There were significant differences between lip width (ChR-ChL) and philtrum width (CphR-CphL) (P<.001). The total heights of the upper (Ls-Li) and lower vermilion lips (Sto-Li) increased, and the heights of the upper (Sn-Ls) and lower (Li-Sl) cutaneous lips decreased. The angles related to the philtrum (ChR-CphR-Ls, P<.001; ChL-CphL-Ls, P<.001) and nasolabial angle (Prn-Sn-Ls) (P<.001) exhibited significant differences. The surface areas of the upper, lower, and total vermilion lip showed significant differences (P<.001). Tukey's test indicated no significant differences in surface area after lip augmentation between the HT1 and C groups. CONCLUSION: Analysis of lip morphology after a filler procedure revealed a reversal of age-related changes, with increases in vermilion lip height and surface area comparable to those of younger individuals. RESUMO
The aim of this case report was to present an alternative therapeutic combination involving lip repositioning (LR) in the correction of gummy smile (GS). This treatment is less invasive than orthognathic surgery and is highly acceptable to patients, using a modified technique that combines myotomy with the insertion of polyester threads as a physical barrier against relapse.
RESUMO
Smiling expresses emotions and affects interpersonal relationships, influencing self-esteem and social life. Nowadays, concerns about aesthetics and access to the Internet have made people more informed and demanding about treatments for gingival smile. Excessive gingival display (EGD) is caused by a variety of factors that can act alone or in combination. These factors may include altered passive eruption (APE), vertical maxillary excess, a short upper lip, and hyperactive upper lip, among other factors that cause gingival hyperplasia. In this case report, the EGD was caused by vertical maxillary excess, hypermobility of the upper lip, and APE. The proposed treatment included two procedures: the Modified Lip Repositioning Surgery (Modified LipStat) Technique, with internal sutures to attempt to restrict the traction of the upper lip elevator muscles, and Esthetic Crown Lengthening (ECL) from the right first premolar to the left first premolar for the treatment of APE. The result provided an aesthetic improvement of the smile, with harmonization in relation to the size of the teeth. The mobility of the upper lip in spontaneous smiles remained reduced up to 6 months of follow-up; however, there was a partial relapse in the position of the upper lip during spontaneous smiling at the end of 6 years of follow-up.
RESUMO
Comprehensive treatment is crucial for patients with a cleft lip/palate. While studies have investigated its impact on children's quality of life, few have examined the effects on primary caregivers. The aim of the study was to compare the quality of life of caregivers of children with cleft lip/palate to a control group at the National School for Higher Studies, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Guanajuato. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a teaching dental clinic of the National School of Higher Studies, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Guanajuato, México, from May to December 2021 involving 140 caregivers (70 in each group). The WHOQoL Bref instrument assessed the quality of life. In addition to the descriptive analysis, a binary logistic regression analysis was carried out, taking dichotomized reported quality of life as the dependent variable. Among the caregivers, 88.6% were female (p > 0.05), and 45 (64.8%) from the study group reported poor quality of life (p < 0.05). A multivariate analysis indicated that caring for a child with cleft lip/palate raised the likelihood of poor quality of life (p < 0.05). The findings emphasize the need for comprehensive support for both patients and caregivers, as their well-being affects patient outcomes.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate is an anomaly that affects both women and men. It is considered to be among the most frequent congenital abnormalities and is related to modifications in chromosomal DNA and multiple genetic alterations. This anomaly can also be associated with various environmental factors, such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, medication use, and exposure to different environmental and industrial toxic substances. The objective of this study was to document the frequency of risk factors related to cleft lip and palate through a systematic review of Mexican studies. METHODS: In this systematic review, a bibliographic search was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in the databases Scielo, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and EBSCO. Keywords related to cleft lip and palate, epidemiology, and risk factors were used. In all, 3 independent reviewers (J.A.S.L., S.L.V., and N.M.F.) selected and evaluated a total of 17 articles included in this analysis, achieving a coefficient of κ = 0.84. RESULTS: The analysis revealed that the highest frequency of conducted studies was in the State of Mexico. The most common risk factors identified were environmental, pharmacological, consumption habits, and gynecological factors. CONCLUSIONS: Identifying the main risk factors for cleft lip and palate in the Mexican population will enable the implementation of preventive measures aimed at reducing exposure to these factors. Additionally, early intervention can improve the quality of life for individuals affected by this condition.
RESUMO
Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a lip disorder, with no standard treatment. Imiquimod (IMIQ) is an immunomodulator that treat precancerous lesions; however, its commercial form causes severe adverse effects. This study aimed to assess IMQ release from a chitosan hydrogel containing 0.05 % nanoencapsulated (NANO) imiquimod (IMIQ-0.05 %-NANO) and its efficacy in AC treatment. The hydrogels were prepared by incorporating chitosan into polymeric nanocapsules (NCimiq) loaded with IMQ, produced using the interfacial deposition of preformed polymer method. IMQ release was evaluated using automated Franz Cells. A triple-blind randomized controlled trial (49 subjects) compared the efficacy of: IMIQ-0.05 %-NANO, 5 % free imiquimod (IMIQ-5 %), 0.05 % free imiquimod (IMIQ-0.05 %), and placebo hydrogel. The IMIQ-NANO-0.05 % and IMIQ-5 % groups exhibited significantly higher rates of clinical improvement (p < 0.05); however, the IMIQ-5 % group experienced more adverse effects (92.3 % of subjects) compared to other groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, in the studied sample, IMIQ-NANO-0.05 % was a safe and effective option to treat AC.

RESUMO
Objective: This study aims to identify fracture patterns on the lingual aspect of the mandible following Bilateral Sagittal Osteotomy of the Mandibular Ramus and correlate these patterns with mandibular anatomical characteristics in patients with cleft lip and palate. Methods: Two hundred cone beam CT scans were analyzed, with 100 scans in the preoperative period to assess mandibular anatomy and 100 in the postoperative period to evaluate the course of fractures on the lingual surface after surgery. Results: Statistical analysis revealed no correlation between the depth of the mandibular fossa and the type of fracture after bilateral sagittal osteotomy. Similarly, there was no association between the height and angle of the mandibular body and the type of fracture. The most common fracture type observed was the type 3 pattern, characterized by a line running through the mandibular canal. Furthermore, no relationship was identified between the studied anatomical aspects and the occurrence of undesired fractures. Conclusions: The anatomical data presented in this study can assist surgeons in selecting the safest surgical techniques and optimal osteotomy sites, particularly in patients with cleft lip and palate.

Gummy smile has numerous causes, which can occur for skeletal or muscular reasons or due to changes in the development of supporting tissues. However, nowadays, the red and white aesthetics have been completely capable of transformation and with a range of surgical or non-surgical procedures to resolve patients' complaints. The general objective of this work is to show the power that dentistry has in the face of aesthetic issues, such as, for example, the shame of smiling due to not feeling comfortable with short teeth and a large strip of gum being exposed. The method used was a case report. Which describes all the clinical steps of the treatment of a 40-year-old patient, who was dissatisfied with her smile due to an altered passive eruption together with hyperactivity of the upper lip. The chosen treatment plan was to perform aesthetic clinical crown augmentation surgery, followed by tooth whitening and later lip repositioning, with the help of botulinum toxin. Finally, to help with healing, the use of laser therapy. The result of the entire surgical process involved in this work is patient satisfaction, materializing the patient's dream, restoring security and spontaneity when smiling. It was observed that through the combination of periodontal surgical techniques to treat gummy smile, success is achieved both in the scientific and biological sense, achieving a more aesthetically attractive smile(AU)

OBJECTIVE: The current study delves into the accessibility of genetic evaluations for individuals with orofacial clefts (OC), comparing data between genetics and treatment centers across Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed primary data from 1463 OC individuals registered in the Brazilian Database of Craniofacial Anomalies (BDCA) between 2008 and 2018 without age or sex selection. Diagnostic exam results stemming from research projects until 2023 were considered. RESULTS: Of the 1463 individuals with typical OC, 987 were non-syndromic, 462 were syndromic (SOC), 10 presented atypical forms, and three were not specified OC cases. The average age for accessing laboratory diagnosis was 8.5 years among SOC individuals. Notably, more SOC cases were registered in genetics centers than treatment and rehabilitation centers (37.1 % vs. 29 %, p = 0.0015). Those originating from genetics centers accessed diagnosis at an average age of 7.3 years, while those from treatment and rehabilitation centers experienced delays with an average age of 10.7 years (p = 0.0581). CONCLUSIONS: Irrespective of the center of origin, the data highlight delayed diagnosis and challenges in accessing genetic tests for the syndromic group. Given the widespread reliance on the public health system by most of the Brazilian population, disseminating this data can significantly contribute to shaping an informed perspective on healthcare access. These insights can improve public policies tailored to the unique needs of individuals with OC.

OBJECTIVES: Oronasal fistulas are common sequelae following cleft lip and palate surgery and can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. They result from various factors, including surgical techniques, tissue management, and patient-specific factors. This case report explores the modern approach to oronasal fistula closure using periodontal plastic surgery principles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The report presents two cases of patients with oronasal fistulas due to previous maxillofacial surgical intervention. These patients underwent microsurgical procedures that involved partial flap thickness preparation of the fistula areas, the use of connective tissue grafts from the palate, and meticulous suturing techniques to ensure graft integrity. The procedures were performed in stages, and postoperative care was provided. RESULTS: Both cases demonstrated successful fistula closure and graft survival. The patients reported improvements in breathing, speech, aesthetics, and quality of life. The second case also included guided bone regeneration and implant placement. CONCLUSIONS: Oronasal fistulas resulting from maxillofacial surgery can be effectively treated using periodontal plastic surgery techniques, significantly improving patients' quality of life and aesthetic outcomes. This approach represents a valuable addition to the existing repertoire of oronasal fistula closure methods.

OBJECTIVES: This investigation aimed to assess the optimal timing for lip repair in children with cleft lip and palate via 3D anthropometric analysis to evaluate their maxillofacial structures. METHODS: The sample comprised 252 digitized dental models, divided into groups according to the following timing of lip repair: G1 (n = 50): 3 months; G2 (n = 50): 5 and 6 months; G3 (n = 26): 8 and 10 months. Models were evaluated at two-time points: T1: before lip repair; T2: at 5 years of age. Linear measurements, area, and Atack index were analyzed. RESULTS: At T1, the intergroup analysis revealed that G1 had statistically significant lower means of I-C', I-C, C-C', and the sum of the segment areas compared to G2 (p = 0.0140, p = 0.0082, p = 0.0004, p < 0.0001, respectively). In addition, there was a statistically significant difference when comparing the cleft area between G2 and G3 (p = 0.0346). At T2, the intergroup analysis revealed that G1 presented a statistically significant mean I-C' compared to G3 (p = 0.0461). In the I-CC' length analysis, G1 and G3 showed higher means when compared to G2 (p = 0.0039). The I-T' measurement was statistically higher in G1 than in G2 (p = 0.0251). In the intergroup growth rate analysis, G1 and G2 showed statistically significant differences in the I-C' measurement compared to G3 (p = 0.0003). In the analysis of the Atack index, there was a statistically significant difference between G1 and the other sample sets (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Children who underwent surgery later showed better results in terms of the growth and development of the dental arches.
RESUMO
Although the labile iron pool (LIP) biochemical identity remains a topic of debate, it serves as a universal homeostatically regulated and essential cellular iron source. The LIP plays crucial cellular roles, being the source of iron that is loaded into nascent apo-iron proteins, a process akin to protein post-translational modification, and implicated in the programmed cell death mechanism known as ferroptosis. The LIP is also recognized for its reactivity with chelators, nitric oxide, and peroxides. Our recent investigations in a macrophage cell line revealed a reaction of the LIP with the oxidant peroxynitrite. In contrast to the LIP's pro-oxidant interaction with hydrogen peroxide, this reaction is rapid and attenuates the peroxynitrite oxidative impact. In this study, we demonstrate the existence and antioxidant characteristic of the LIP and peroxynitrite reaction in various cell types. Beyond its potential role as a ubiquitous complementary or substitute protection system against peroxynitrite for cells, the LIP and peroxynitrite reaction may influence cellular iron homeostasis and ferroptosis by changing the LIP redox state and LIP binding properties and reactivity.

Structural variation is a source of genetic variation that, in some cases, may trigger pathogenicity. Here, we describe two cases, a mother and son, with the same partial inverted duplication of the long arm of chromosome 8 [invdup(8)(q24.21q24.21)] of 17.18 Mb, showing different clinical manifestations: microcephaly, dorsal hypertrichosis, seizures and neuropsychomotor development delay in the child, and a cleft lip/palate, down-slanted palpebral fissures and learning disabilities in the mother. The deleterious outcome, in general, is reflected by the gain or loss of genetic material. However, discrepancies among the clinical manifestations raise some concerns about the genomic configuration within the chromosome and other genetic modifiers.
