RESUMO

Airway closure has proved to be important in a number of respiratory diseases and may be the primary functional defect in asthma. A surrogate measure of closing volume can be identified using the forced oscillation technique (FOT), by performing a deflation maneuver and examining the resultant reactance (Xrs) lung volume relationship. This study aims to determine if a slow vital capacity maneuver can be used instead of this deflation maneuver and compare it to existing more complex techniques. Three subject groups were included in the study; healthy (n = 29), asthmatic (n = 18), and COPD (n = 10) for a total of 57 subjects. Reactance lung volume curves were generated via FOT recordings during two different breathing manoeuvres (both pre and post bronchodilator). The correlation and agreement between surrogate closing volume (Volcrit) and reactance (Xrscrit) at this volume was analysed. The changes in Volcrit and Xrscrit pre and post bronchodilator were also analysed. Across all three subject groups, the two different measures of Volcrit were shown to be statistically equivalent (p > 0.05) and demonstrated a strong fit to the data (R2 = 0.49, 0.78, 0.59, for asthmatic, COPD and healthy subject groups, respectively). A bias was evident between the two measurements of Xrscrit with statistically different means (p < 0.05). However, the two measurements of Xrscrit displayed the same trends. In conclusion, we have developed an alternative technique for measuring airway closure from FOT recordings. The technique delivers equivalent and possibly more sensitive results to previous methods while being simple and easily performed by the patient.

ObjectiveTo explore the effect of Curcumin on TGF-β1 and HGF in pulmonary fibrosis and the effect of different concentrations of Curcumin on the expression of HGF and TGF-β1 in pulmonary fibrosis.Methods90 health male SD rats were randomly divided into six groups as follows:the control group ( group A),model group ( group B),prednisolone-treated group ( group C),and groups of low ( D group),middle( group E) and high( group F) dose curcumin (50,100,and 200 mg/kg,respectively).Animal model of pulmonary fibrosis was produced in SD rats by the endotracheal bleomycin,samples were obtained on days 7,14,and 28.The expression of HGF and TGF-β1 were measured by RT-PCR and Westem blot.ResultsThe light density values (0.693 ±0.028) and gray value (0.96 ±0.10)of TGF-β1 on day 28 of group A was the lowest,while the light density values ( 1.586 ±0.020) and gray value ( 1.77 ±0.15 ) of group B was the highest,the light density values (0.881 ± 0.032) and gray value ( 1.19 ±+ 0.12 )of group F was lower than group B.But the light density value and gray value of HGF showed reverse,the light density values and gray value of HGF on day 28 of group F was the highest,there was no statistical difference between group B and group D ( P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe protective effect of Cucumin against pulmonary fibrosis may be through stimulating the activity of HGF and inhibiting the activity of TGFβ1 in a dose-dependent manner.

Objective To explore protective effects of curcumin on lung injury in the early hepatic ischemia/reperfsion (reperfusion for 1 and 3 hour) inrats. Methods Wistarratswererandom]y divided into the fo]]owinggroups: GroupA (shamoperation), group B (control group) and group C (cureumin applied). Contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO) in lung tissues were determined to evaluate the protective effect of eurcumin on lung injury in the injury of isehemia/ reperfusion. Results Curcumin relieved edema of diaphragmatic wall and exudation of blood cell and white cell in pulmonary alveoli. Curcumin increased the contents of SOD, CAT and decreased contents of MDA, MPO in lung tissue. Conclusion By repressing the generation of oxygen free radical and infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocyte in lung tissue, curcumin can relieve lung injury in the early hepatic ischemia/repeffusion.

Objective This study was to evaluate the protective effect of pulmonary perfusion with cold modified low- potassium dextran (LPD) solution on lung function after cardiopulmonary bypass in combined aortic and mitral valve replacement. Method Twenty-four consecutive adult patients with combined aortic and mitral valve disease were divided into a control group ( n =14) and a perfused group ( n = 10). Cold modified LPD solution was infused to the main pulmonary artery in the protective group. PaO_2/FiO_2 were monitored at six different time points; preoperation, 0 hour, 1 hours, 2 hours, 6 hours and 12 hours after the termination of CPB. Concentrations of interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 in plasma were measured at four different time points; preoperation, 0 hour, 6 hours, and 12 hours after the termination of CPB. Result PaO_2/FiO_2 in the perfused group were increased more than that in the control group. The IL-6 and IL-10 increased in both groups after operations( P <0. 05). Patients of the perfused group showed significantly reduced IL-6 expression, compared with the control group ( P <0. 001), but the rising extents of IL-10 in the perfused group were higher than that in the control group ( P <0.001). Conclusion Pulmonary artery perfusion with cold modified LPD solution during cardiopulmonary bypass relieved lung injury in combined aortic and mitral valve replacement.
