We aim to describe older mens' experiences with physical activity (PA) and their preferences for PA programs. We interviewed 14 men from a Canada-based PA intervention study called Men on the Move, and 5 men from a supplementary sample (who were not intervention participants). Content analysis was used to describe their experiences with PA and program preferences. The socio-ecological perspective and the hegemonic masculinity framework guided the research. PA barriers were low motivation, poor health, lack of time, interests other than PA and a lack of interest in PA, finances, lack of knowledge about PA, injury fear, social influences, inconvenience, weather, caregiving, built/natural environments, low-quality fitness instructors, and program structure. PA facilitators were chores, health, interest, time, motivation, social influences, active transportation, built/natural environments, good weather, program structure, and skilled/knowledgeable fitness instructors. PA program preferences were small group atmosphere, individualized attention/programming, equal number of men and women, sports programming, PA classes, and experienced instructors. Older men have distinct PA experiences. Promoting and designing programs that address their experiences may increase their PA.

The main objective of this qualitative and quantitative research paper is to explore the occurrences and relations of the anima, animus and androgynous in dreams, with particular emphasis on the consideration of the androgynous in the human psyche. The sample consists of 9 series of dreams (141 dreams in total), from 9 dreamers, 7 women (female sex/gender) and 2 men (male sex/gender), aged 25-57, heterosexual, undergoing Jungian psychotherapy, and presenting couple-related themes. Statistical results and qualitative analysis offer new input for the re-vision of the classical anima-animus model, and the addition of in-depth explorations into the androgynous, paving the way for a new model of psychopathology and psychotherapeutic clinical work, in transition.


L'objectif principal de cette étude qualitative et quantitative est d'explorer les apparitions de l'anima, l'animus et l'androgyne dans les rêves, ainsi que les relations entre ces termes, avec un intérêt tout particulier pour l'androgyne dans la psyché humaine. L'échantillon est composé de 9 séries de rêves (au total 141 rêves), de 9 rêveurs dont 7 femmes (sexe et genre féminin) et 2 hommes (sexe et genre masculin) d'âge entre 25 et 57 ans, hétérosexuels, en analyse Jungienne, et montrant des thèmes en rapport avec le couple. Les résultats statistiques et l'analyse qualitative apportent de nouveaux éléments pour la ré-vision du modèle classique anima-animus, et pour l'ajout de recherches approfondies en ce qui concerne l'androgyne. Ceci afin de préparer le chemin pour un nouveau modèle de psychopathologie et de travail clinique de psychothérapie, en transition.


El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa es explorar las ocurrencias y relaciones del ánima, ánimus y andrógino en los sueños, con particular énfasis en la consideración del andrógino en el psiquismo humano. La muestra consiste en 9 series de sueños (141 sueños en total), de 9 soñadores, 7 mujeres (sexo/género femenino) y 2 hombres (sexo/género masculino), con edades comprendidas entre 25 y 57 años, heterosexuales, sometidos a psicoterapia junguiana, y que presentan temas relacionados con la pareja. Los resultados estadísticos y el análisis cualitativo ofrecen nuevas aportaciones para la revisión del modelo clásico ánima-ánimus, junto a nuevas exploraciones en profundidad sobre lo andrógino, allanando el camino para un nuevo modelo de psicopatología y trabajo clínico psicoterapéutico, en transición.

Esta tese analisa a forma como os homens da cidade de Juiz de Fora, no estado de Minas Gerais, se posicionaram diante da crise de saúde pública desencadeada pela pandemia da COVID-19. A investigação focaliza como, nas últimas décadas, o tema da saúde tornou-se uma área de relevância nos estudos sobre a qualidade de vida da população masculina, que de forma geral - a depender de seu pertencimento a certos segmentos sociais - não atribui importância aos cuidados com o corpo. O estudo adota a abordagem da antropologia interpretativa para descrever as categorias de gênero relativas ao universo masculino como múltiplas, dinâmicas e socialmente construídas, em contextos de interação intersubjetiva. O propósito é compreender o sistema de valores associados à saúde e aos cuidados a ela relativos entre homens. Para tanto foi realizada uma netnografia das intervenções de moradores da cidade, na página do Facebook de um importante jornal local, com foco nas reportagens sobre a pandemia de COVID-19, durante o período de fevereiro de 2020 a março de 2022. A partir dos comentários e interações realizadas neste espaço foi possível delinear um quadro, no qual o modelo tradicional de masculinidade entrou em tensão com modelos de cuidado com a saúde, em período de emergência sanitária, quando foi preciso ter controle da pandemia no país.


This thesis analyzes how men in the city of Juiz de Fora, in the state of Minas Gerais, have positioned themselves in the face of the public health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation focuses on how, in recent decades, the topic of health has become an area of relevance in studies on the quality of life of the male population, which in general - depending on their belonging to certain social segments - does not attach importance to cares with the body. The study adopts the approach of interpretive anthropology to describe gender categories related to the male universe as multiple, dynamic and socially constructed, in contexts of intersubjective interaction. The purpose is to understand the system of values associated with health and related care among men. To this end, a netnography of the interventions of city residents was carried out, on the Facebook page of an important local newspaper, focusing on reports on the COVID-19 pandemic, during the period from February 2020 to March 2022. comments and interactions carried out in this space, it was possible to outline a picture, in which the traditional model of masculinity came into tension with models of health care, in a period of health emergency, when it was necessary to control the pandemic in the country.


Cette thèse analyse comment les hommes de la ville de Juiz de Fora, dans l'État de Minas Gerais, se sont positionnés face à la crise de santé publique déclenchée par la pandémie de COVID-19. L'enquête se concentre sur la façon dont, au cours des dernières décennies, le thème de la santé est devenu un domaine de pertinence dans les études sur la qualité de vie de la population masculine, qui en général - en fonction de leur appartenance à certains segments sociaux - ne s'attache pas importance aux soins du corps. L'étude adopte l'approche de l'anthropologie interprétative pour décrire les catégories de genre liées à l'univers masculin comme multiples, dynamiques et socialement construites, dans des contextes d'interaction intersubjective. Le but est de comprendre le système de valeurs associé à la santé et aux soins connexes chez les hommes. A cet effet, une netnographie des interventions des habitants de la ville a été réalisée, sur la page Facebook d'un important journal local, portant sur les reportages sur la pandémie de COVID-19, durant la période allant de février 2020 à mars 2022. commentaires et interactions portés Dans cet espace, il a été possible de brosser un tableau dans lequel le modèle traditionnel de la masculinité est entré en tension avec les modèles de soins de santé, en période d'urgence sanitaire, lorsqu'il était nécessaire de contrôler la pandémie dans le pays.

O presente artigo parte da indagação sobre o que é o pai, ser vivente, na atualidade. Aliado a dois produtos culturais como recurso ilustrativo, uma música francesa e seu videoclipe, este trabalho objetiva discutir a relação entre a masculinidade e a paternidade, bem como os efeitos do contemporâneo em uma e outra. Para isso, percorre-se alguns escritos de Lacan, além de trabalhos de comentadores freudo-lacanianos. Ao final, depreende-se que a paternidade é constituída pela adoção de um filho, ou seja, é um ato simbólico. O pai, ainda que abalado por um discurso que não sustenta sua função, persiste, mas é convocado e comparece de um modo diferente: o pai-testemunha, aquele que dando mostras de seu desejo, toca o desejo do filho.


Father's refined action: The present article starts from the question about what the father is, as living being, nowadays. By using two cultural products as a illustrative resource, a French music and its videoclip, this work aims discuss the relation between the masculinity and the fatherhood, as well as the effects of contemporary thought on both. In order to achieve this, it goes through some of Lacan's writings, alongside freud-lacanian commentators' works. In the end, it appears that fatherhood is constituted by the adoption of a son, this is, a symbolic act. The father, although shaken by a discourse that does not support his function, persists, but yet summoned and attending in a different way: the father-witness, the one who showing his desire, touches the son's desire.

Après tout, il semble que la paternité soit constituée par l'adoption d'un fils, c'est-à-dire un acte symbolique. Le père, bien que secoué par un discours qui ne supporte pas sa fonction, persiste, mais il est convoqué et assiste d'une manière différente: le père-témoin, celui qui, manifestant son désir, touche le désir du fils.

OBJECTIVES: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents. Boys are more affected than girls, although they report fewer suicide attempts and rely less on care. Few studies have examined the experience of suicidal thoughts and behavior among young boys. In order to improve their health care, it is necessary to consider the socio-cultural aspects and the construction of the meaning given by adolescent boys to suicidal behaviors in France. METHOD: This is a qualitative, complementary and inductive study. All teens included have presented suicidal thoughts in the months preceding the inclusion. The existence of self-mutilation and/or suicidal act is sought but is not included within the criteria of inclusion, the various contexts will enrich the data. Semi-structured interviews are transcribed and analyzed by the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. RESULTS: Ten adolescents between 14 and 20 years old were included in the study. Three axes of experience emerge: the relationship to oneself, the relationship to the other, the relationship to death. Some themes are common to experiences of both boys and girls, others are more specific to the boys' experience. The inner struggle, testing one's limits and an isolating unspeakable are thus common, highlighting the difficulty for adolescents to mentalize and verbalize emotions and feelings. Difficulties in connecting with others, and feelings of loneliness and isolation, are at the core of the participants' experience. However, the experience of boys appears specific in the difficulty to represent the irreversibility of death which can lead to suicidal behavior without direct intentionality. The narrative of suicidal acts, in its formulation, is quite different from that of young girls. One can assume that the difficulty of expressing suffering could lead young boys to develop a discourse that overshadows the question of their death, or in contrast magnifies it in a rewarding stage from which they pride themselves. The fear of being isolated or rejected seems almost insurmountable for the boys interviewed. The fear of the judgment of peers or the family is mixed with the imperative to face the problem by oneself and reinforces the feeling of isolation in a retroactive loop. The story of the suicidal act can take a positive and enriching tone in the participant's stories. This only applies to adolescents with a history of suicidal gesture. The experience of acting out and its consequences seems to be integrated by the adolescent as elements which participate to a certain extent to the construction of their identity. This ameliorative feature can be compared to the hegemonic social models of masculinity. The sociological notion of gender identity makes it possible to think of this construction in a dynamic way and to propose adaptations of the caregivers' attitude during the first interviews with a suicidal teenager. During the first meetings, the caregiver should explore the adolescent's representations of the suicidal crisis in a neutral, self-interested, and unbiased way, including when the representations are disturbing or shocking for the caregiver. For example, when the patient values or glorifies suicidal behavior or when care is experienced as a sign of weakness and vulnerability. Respect of these proposals can indeed support weakened narcissistic foundations and favor encounter and alliance. This can only be done with the conviction that these representations are not frozen, but in construction, and that they can be secondarily mobilized in the therapeutic relationship. For that purpose, a work of elaboration on the representations of the masculinity will be able to lead the young person to reconsider his perception of care and suicidal behaviors. Reflexivity on the part of the caregiver about his own representations of masculinity seems necessary. CONCLUSION: Therapeutic management must explore and respect the adolescent's representations of masculinity and then mobilize them to bring the young person to reconsider his perception of care and suicidal behavior.

RESUMO

Quantitative surveys reveal that a greater number of women than men report that they refuse care. This article presents three complementary approaches to gender which examine this disparity and allow us to think about the differences between men and women when it comes to health in a more complex way. These approaches are also useful for considering the conditions for equal access to healthcare for everyone.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender as formações discursivas (FD) sobre gênero e cuidados em saúde de homens internados (no setor de urologia) de um hospital. Participaram do estudo sete homens e os dados coletados foram analisados a partir da Análise do Discurso de Michel Pêcheux. Duas FD foram identificadas (Masculinidades hegemônicas; Não-ditos sobre saúde do homem) e destacaram: tradicionalismos e estereótipos de gêneros enquanto norteadores dos discursos e práticas dos participantes pautados em uma Formação Ideológica que prescreve regras de conduta distintas para os gêneros, dentre elas os cuidados em saúde. Enfatiza-se a urgência de investir na mobilização desses sujeitos para o exercício do autocuidado através da prevenção e promoção da saúde, bem como o investimento em espaços institucionais de discussão e formação dos profissionais objetivando garantir os direitos e o reconhecimento desse segmento da população enquanto lócus de cuidado.


The aim of this research was to understand the discursive formations (DF) about gender and health care of hospitalized men (in the urology sector). Seven men participated in this study and the collected data was analyzed in the light of Michel Pêcheux Discourse Analysis. Two DF were identified (hegemonic masculinity; Unsaid about men health) and highlighted: traditionalism and gender stereotypes as guiding the participants' discourses and practices based on an Ideological Formation that prescribes different rules of conduct for the genders, among them health care. Thus, it is emphasized the urgency to mobilize the exercise of self-care through prevention and promotion of health. It is also important to invest in institutional spaces for discussion and professional training, aiming to guarantee the rights and the recognition of this segment of the population as a locus of care.


El objetivo de esta investigación fue comprender las formaciones discursivas (FD) de género y cuidados en salud de hombres internados (en el sector de urología) de un hospital. Participaron del estudio siete hombres y los datos recolectados fueron analizados a partir del Análisis del Discurso de Michel Pêcheux. Dos FD fueran identificadas (masculinidad hegemónica; no-dichos sobre salud del hombre) y destacan tradicionalismos y estereotipos de géneros como orientadores de reglas de conducta específicas para hombres y hembras, entre ellas, los cuidados en salud. Siendo así, es urgente intervenir en el ejercicio del auto cuidado a través de la prevención y promoción de la salud, así como en espacios institucionales de discusión acerca de la formación de los profesionales con el objetivo de garantizar los derechos de ese segmento de la población como locus de cuidado.


Cet article à explorer les formations discursives (FD) sur le genre et les soins de santé des hommes hospitalisés (secteur de l'urologie). Sept hommes ont interviewé et les données recueillies ont été analysées dans l'analyse du discours de Michel Pêcheux. Deux Formations Discoursive (FD) ont été identifiées (masculinités hégémoniques; ne-pas-dit en santé) et soulignées les traditionalismes et les stéréotypes de genre guidant les discours et les pratiques des participants dans une idéologie qui prescrit différentes règles de conduite (de sante inclusif) pour les genres. L'accent est mis sur l'urgence d'investir dans la mobilisation de ces sujets pour l'exercice des soins auto-administrés par la prévention et la promotion de la santé, ainsi que dans les espaces institutionnels de discussion et de formation professionnels visant à garantir les droits de ce segment de la population.

The so-called 'crisis in masculinity' in the post-industrial/post-feminist world is not a new idea but in recent years it does seem to have forced its way back onto the agenda due to a lack of traditional employment, such as coal mining, thus robbing generations of men of their cultural identities. This collective 'crisis' has emerged through media attention on a succession of well-known men in the arts and sports worlds such as Bruce Springsteen, Stormzy, Professor Green and Rio Ferdinand, who share in common a strong sense of masculine identification. In addition, all have openly discussed the healing and relief experienced by embracing the vulnerable, emotional aspects of themselves, or what has been historically characterized as the anima archetype in Jungian psychology. This essay will recount some of their stories of struggle as they have bravely spoken up about their mental health issues, perhaps diminishing, by example, the erroneous notion of depression as a 'woman's problem'. As noted, in recent times we have witnessed a proliferation of famous men speaking out about their emotional difficulties, often in the context of loss and depression, thus providing potential role-modelling for a more expanded view of contemporary masculinity. This paper attempts to consider the tendency amongst a particular type of modern man who is both traditionally macho and simultaneously emotionally articulate with the capacity to open up about the experiences of their inner worlds and the environmental pressures they face in a fast-paced and ever-changing world. Beginning with some brief stories about the men listed above, the primary focus will be on the work of the UK cross-dressing artist and Turner Prize winner (2003) Grayson Perry (b. 1960), by studying his unusual and highly creative clarion call to challenge modern men to recalibrate their emotional behaviour and to speak openly about loss and emotional difficulty. As readers will see, he has developed a unique method that includes filmed, televised interactional interviews with various individuals and groups and he then produces art pieces that embody what has transpired through his engagement with their suffering and real-life dilemmas. This highly creative process offers a double or even triple containment for those struggling with all-too-human pain via the holding interview with him directly; the artwork that he creates as a result; and then through the recording on film that is shared with television audiences who are deeply affected by what they witness and who perhaps find a form of healing via identification.


La prétendue « crise de la masculinité ¼ dans le monde post-industriel et post-féministe n'est pas une idée nouvelle mais une idée qui s'est imposée de nouveau à l'ordre du jour dans les dernières années du fait du manque d'emploi dans des branches traditionnelles telles les mines de charbon, ce qui a dérobé à des générations d'hommes leur identité culturelle. Cette « crise ¼ collective a émergé du fait de l'attention des médias sur une succession d'hommes célèbres dans les mondes des arts et des sports, comme Bruce Springsteen, Stormzy, Professeur Green et Rio Ferdinand, qui ont en commun un sens aigu d'identification masculine. De plus, tous ont parlé ouvertement de la guérison et du soulagement qu'ils ont éprouvés du fait d'accueillir les aspects vulnérables et émotionnels d'eux-mêmes; ce qui historiquement a été défini comme l'archétype de l'anima dans la psychologie Jungienne (Jung 1951). Comme nous l'avons souligné, nous avons assisté ces temps derniers à la prolifération d'hommes célèbres parlant ouvertement de leurs difficultés émotionnelles, souvent dans un contexte de dépression et de perte, et offrant ainsi des modèles potentiels pour une vision plus élargie de la masculinité contemporaine. Cet article vise à examiner la tendance chez un certain type d'hommes modernes, qui sont à la fois macho de manière traditionnelle et en même temps éloquents quant à leurs émotions, et qui ont la capacité de parler ouvertement des expériences de leurs mondes internes et des pressions qu'ils rencontrent venant de leur environnement dans un monde au rythme effréné et qui change tout le temps. Commençant par quelques brèves histoires concernant les hommes mentionnés précédemment, l'accent principal sera sur le travail de l'artiste britannique travesti qui a gagné le Prix Turner (en 2003), Grayson Perry (né en 1960). Nous étudierons son appel retentissant, inhabituel et très créatif, à mettre au défi les hommes modernes pour qu'ils réajustent leur comportement émotionnel et parlent ouvertement de leurs difficultés émotionnelles, de leurs deuils. Comme les lecteurs pourront le voir, il a conçu une méthode unique dans laquelle il s'agit d'interviews interactionnels filmés et télévisés, avec différentes personnes et groupes. Il produit ensuite des œuvres d'art qui incarnent ce qui est apparu au travers de son implication avec les souffrances et les dilemmes dans la vie réelle des participants. Ce processus hautement créatif offre doublement ou même triplement un cadre contenant pour ceux qui sont aux prises avec la souffrance humaine par le biais de l'1nterview, du rapport avec l'artiste, et de l'œuvre d'art qu'il crée à partir de cela. Puis encore par un enregistrement sur film qui est partagé avec des publics de télévision qui sont profondément affectés par ce dont ils sont témoins, et qui trouvent peut-être une forme de guérison par identification.

Esta 'crisis' colectiva ha emergido a través de la atención de los medios en una sucesión de hombres, reconocidos mundialmente, en artes y deportes, tales como Bruce Springsteen, Stormzy, Professor Green y Rio Ferdinand, quienes comparten entre sí un fuerte sentido de identificación masculina. A su vez, todos han expresado abiertamente lo sanador y el alivio experimentado al aceptar los aspectos emocionales y vulnerables de sí mismos, o aquello que históricamente se ha caracterizado como el arquetipo del anima en la psicología Junguiana (Jung 1951). Este estudo examina as implicações da fluidez de gênero e da permanência de gênero para fins de experiência clínica e social. Consideram-se as crises de desenvolvimento em torno da separação tanto para desenvolvimento masculino quanto para o feminino. Teorias de desenvolvimento, teoria de sistemas dinâmicos não lineares e interseccionalidade são propostas como modelos úteis, uma vez que contemplam a identificação no desenvolvimento.


This essay examine the implications of gender fluidity and gender fixity for clinical and social experience. The developmental crises around separation are considered for both male and female development. Developmental theories, nonlinear dynamic systems theory and intersectionality are proposed as useful templates for considering identification in development.


Este estudio examina las implicaciones de la fluidez de género y de la permanencia de género para fines de experiencia clínica y social. Se consideran las crisis de desarrollo en relación a la separación tanto para el desarrollo masculino como para el femenino. Teorías de desarrollo, teoría de sistemas dinámicos no lineales e interseccionalidad son propuestas como modelos útiles, pues contemplan la identificación en el desarrollo.


Cette étude examine les implications de la fluidité et de la permanence de genre, ayant pour but une expérience clinique et social. On a pris en compte les crises de développement au tour de la séparation, soit pour le développement masculin, soit pour le féminin. On propose des théories de développement, la théorie de systèmes dynamiques non linéaires et de l'intersectionnalité en tant que modèles utiles, étant donné qu'ils traitent de l'identification dans le développement.

En este trabajo se presentan varias viñetas de la historia clínica de un proyecto fallido de psicoterapia psicoanalítica que destapó –bajo la superficie de una depresión reactiva– una estructura perversa en una personalidad como si. Tanto la identidad masculina (¿qué significa ser hombre?) como la imposible intimidad con los objetos poseen, en los fragmentos clínicos presentados, un relieve importante, aportando muy brevemente hipótesis psicodinámicas para su comprensión. El objetivo que me guía es ofrecer una serie de vislumbres de un caso clínico complejo en el que la sexualidad cobra un valor simbólico y real en la estructuración de entramados relacionales muy alienantes para las mujeres. En segundo lugar, presento hipótesis interpretativas que plasman el desenlace de la intimidad perverso-narcisista creada desde un falso self. Pretendo evidenciar una ligazón indiscutible: los procesos que articulan la identidad son los mismos que tejen la intimidad: imposibilitada esta, no puede erigirse aquella. (AU)


In this paper several samples of a clinical history of a failed project on psychoanalytic psychotherapy are set out. The clinical history uncovered, under the surface of a reactive depression, a perverse structure in a personality itself. Both the masculine identity (what does it mean to be a man?) as the impossible intimacy with objects are highly accentuated in the presented clinical fragments, providing very briefly psychodynamic theories to facilitate comprehension. With this paper I aim to offer some glimpses of a complex clinical case in which sexuality has a symbolic and real value in the creation of relational connections that are very alienating for women. Secondly, I present interpretative hypotheses that articulate the outcome of the perverse-narcissistic intimacy created from a false self. I attempt to demonstrate an undeniable connection: the processes that articulate identity are the same as those that forge intimacy: if the former is prevented, the latter cannot prosper. (AU)


Dans ce travail je présente plusieurs vignettes de l’histoire clinique d’un projet avorté de psychothérapie psychanalytique qui a dévoilé -sous l’apparence d’une dépression réactive- une structure perverse dans une personnalité comme si. Aussi bien l’identité masculine (que veut dire être un homme?) que l’intimité impossible avec les objets ont, dans les fragments cliniques présentés, un relief important, apportant très brièvement des hypothèses psychodynamiques pour leur compréhension. L’objectif qui me guide est d’offrir une série d’aperçus d’un cas clinique complexe dans lequel la sexualité possède une valeur symbolique et réelle dans la structuration de trames relationnelles très aliénantes pour les femmes. Deuxièmement, je présente des hypothèses interprétatives qui montrent le dénouement de l’intimité perverse-narcissique créée à partir d’un faux self. Je prétends mettre en évidence un lien indiscutable : les processus qui articulent l’identité sont les mêmes qui tissent l’intimité : si la première n’est pas possible, la deuxième ne peut pas se construire. BACKGROUND: Gender parity is frequently raised as an equity issue in occupational therapy, with strategies proposed to recruit more men. PURPOSE: This article explores whether this is a legitimate equity concern. KEY ISSUES: Most employment is gender segregated; when gender balances change, the field either re-genders feminine or creates gender-segregated internal divisions. Men avoid feminized jobs because they pay less and hold less social status. They are a "step down" for men. In such jobs, men are disproportionately pushed into management positions, with better pay, more prestige, and less hands-on care. Equity issues concern structural barriers to success in particular employment fields. Though they may feel discomfort in a feminized field, men do not face structural barriers in occupational therapy. IMPLICATIONS: Broader challenges to traditional gender norms are needed, but there is no evidence that gender parity is an equity concern or that recruitment targeting masculinity would make a difference.

There is limited research on the impact of HIV or its treatment on men's identity construction and gender roles in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on in-depth research with 26 men in rural Uganda, this article discusses men's vulnerabilities and shifting gender relations and sense of masculinity resulting from HIV infection or enrolment on treatment in eastern Uganda. The findings suggest two broad categories of masculinity: respectable and reputational. HIV infection and illness dented masculinity as men lost authority within the domestic sphere. A weakened provider role and over-reliance on wives and children undermined masculinity as family head, and social sanctioning of their sexual activity, undermined conventional masculine identities predicted on reputation. However, treatment led to a more reflexive approach to demonstrating masculinity, increased attentiveness to health and restored hope to father children free of HIV, resuscitating respectable masculinities. The balance between eroded and restored masculinity varied between men by their treatment history, age, family composition and state of health. HIV support agencies need to pay attention to the way HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) influence men's perception of their masculinity and support them to overcome the anxieties about dented or eroded masculinity, while building on the positive ways in which treatment restores masculinity to support men's adherence to HIV treatment. In particular, there is a need to support men's engagement in productive activities that bring income so that men can regain their provider roles following ART and restore their respectability in both the public and the domestic sphere.

Masculinity studies are fairly new and young churchgoers are an under-researched group in the current Congolese church context. In response to this knowledge gap, this paper attempts to explore discourses of young churchgoers from deprived areas of Kinshasa regarding masculinity and sexuality in the era of HIV. A series of 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted with unmarried young churchgoers from the Salvation Army, Protestant and Revival churches. The interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using discourse analysis. Five main discourses emerged: 'we are aware of the church message on sex', 'young men need sex', 'young women need money', 'to use or not to use condoms' and 'we trust in the church message'. Although all informants knew and heard church messages against premarital sex, many of them were sexually active. The perception was that young men were engaged in sexual activities with multiple partners as a result of sexual motivations surrounding masculinity and sexual potency, while young women sought multiple partners through transactional and intergenerational sex for economic reasons. These sexual practices of young people conflicted with church messages on sexual abstinence and faithfulness. However, a small number of participants challenged current gender norms and suggested alternative ways of being a man or a woman. To elucidate these alternatives, we suggest that church youths and church leaders might take concrete actions to deconstruct misconceptions about being men. In this way, they can possibly enhance a frank and fruitful dialogue on sex, sexuality and gender to promote positive masculinities and constructive partnerships to prevent HIV.

Despite the growing popularity of vasectomy in recent years, historians have largely ignored the history of the procedure. The current article provides a preliminary examination of voluntary male sterilization in Canada and, in so doing, challenges the gendered paradigm scholars have often applied to the history of contraception. State-sponsored Medicare and late decriminalization of contraception are discussed as factors that slowed widespread adoption of vasectomy in Canada while evolving surgical techniques are highlighted for their role in increasing acceptability of the procedure. The article explores how evolving definitions of hegemonic masculinity have both hindered and encouraged acceptance of vasectomy over time.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é diferenciar duas formas de pensar a feminilidade. A primeira, entendida a partir da economia libidinal de um homem e a segunda como uma forma própria de um sujeito se constituir sexuado. Neste trabalho, a feminilidade é pensada como uma posição do sujeito, e buscamos aproximar alguns dos principais conceitos que Freud e Lacan usam para pensar a feminilidade, nomeadamente, no caso de Freud, no que diz respeito à configuração particular da libido feminina entre a libido objetal e a libido narcísica e, no caso de Lacan, no que diz respeito à relação da mulher com o falo ser mediada por uma forma diferente de relação com o Outro.


The objective of this study is to distinguish between two ways of thinking about femininity by psychoanalysis. The first, understood from the point of view of the libidinal economy of a man, and the second as a definite way of a subject to constitute itself as a sexed being. In order to develop this idea of femininity as a subject position we tried to establish connections among some of the key concepts that Freud and Lacan used to think about this theme, specially, in the case of Freud, with regard to the particular configuration of female libido between object libido and narcissistic libido and, in the case of Lacan, with regard to woman's relationship to the phallus to be mediated by a different form of relationship with the Other.


El objetivo de este estudio consiste en distinguir entre dos formas de pensar la feminidad para el psicoanálisis. La primera, a partir de la economía libidinal de un hombre, y la segunda, en cuanto una forma propia de un sujeto de constituirse como sexual. El esfuerzo está en cómo tratar la idea de la feminidad como una posición de sujeto. Así, se trató establecer la conexión entre algunos de los conceptos clave que Freud y Lacan usan para dar cuenta del tema. Es decir, entre lo que Freud dice sobre la configuración particular de la libido femenina entre la libido objetal y la narcisista, y, lo que Lacan dice acerca de la relación de la mujer y del falo ser mediada por una forma de relación diferente con el Otro.


Le but de cette étude est de faire la distinction entre deux manières de penser la féminité. O presente trabalho discute questões relativas à paternidade e ao masculino. Freud iniciou sua clínica em um momento marcado por um modelo particular de família, no qual existia um discurso que delineava a masculinidade e a paternidade e as conjugava ao discurso religioso. No discurso religioso, havia um modelo consistente do que se esperava e um lugar determinado para o homem e para o pai na família e na sociedade. Desde 1938, Lacan ressaltou a degradação do papel do pai, e caracterizou a nossa época como marcada pelo declínio da função paterna. Partindo da ideia de que a crise contemporânea tem como ponto basilar esse declínio da função paterna, faz-se necessário investigar a diferença entre os conceitos que são utilizados nessa via, como os de imagem, imago, papel e função paternas. Ademais, buscamos atingir o cerne de nossa investigação verificando o modo como são trabalhadas as questões relativas à paternidade, ao masculino e ao viril no filme Clube da Luta, de 1999. O filme foi baseado no romance homônimo escrito por Chuck Palahniuk e publicado em 1996, no qual o protagonista narra sua história e os eventos que o levaram à criação de clubes de luta.(AU)


The present work discusses issues related to paternity and to masculinity. Freud started his clinic works during a moment marked for a particular family model, when there was a discourse that delineated masculinity and paternity, linked to the religious discourse. The religious discourse, at that time, provided a consistent model of what was expected, and a determined place for the man and the father in family and society. Since 1938, Lacan emphasized the degradation of the father role, pointing out that our time is marked by the declination of the father function. Starting from the idea that the contemporary crisis is based in this decline of the father function, it is necessary to investigate the differences among the concepts that are often used in this path, such as father image, imago, role and function. In addition, we attempt to get to the core of our investigation by verifying the way that issues concerning paternity, masculinity and virility are addressed in the movie Fight Club, of 1999. The movie was based on the homonymous novel written by Chuck Palahniuk and published in 1996, in which the protagonist narrates his story and the events that lead to the creation of Fight Clubs.(AU)


El presente trabajo discute cuestiones relativas a la paternidad y lo masculino. Freud empezó su práctica clínica en un momento marcado por un modelo particular de familia, en lo cual existía un discurso que delineaba la masculinidad y la paternidad y éstas se ligaban al discurso religioso. En el discurso religioso, había un modelo consistente de lo que se esperaba y un lugar determinado para el hombre y para el padre en la familia y en la sociedad. En partant de l'idée que ce dernier est à lorigine de la crise contemporaine, il nous reste à étudier la différence entre les concepts qui y sont liés, comme ceux de l'image, de llmago, du róle et de la fonction paternelle. De plus, nous illustrerons notre recherche en analysant la manière dont sont abordées les questions relatives à la paternité, au sexe masculin et à la virilité dans le film Fight Club, 1999. Ce film est une adaptation du roman éponyme écrit par Chuck Palahniuk (1996) dans lequel le protagoniste raconte son histoire et les événements qui lont mené à la création du Fight Club.(AU)

In 1914, Progressive Era reformer Irving Fisher and wealthy contractor Harold Ley founded the Life Extension Institute (LEI), a business venture organized to address the problems of American health. For approximately two decades, from 1914 until the death of its medical director in 1931, the Life Extension Institute widely promoted its health maintenance program of annual physical examinations and health literature. The advertised goal of the LEI was to extend life without old age, as well as improve masculinity and good business practices through adherence to health principles. The first two decades of activities of the Life Extension Institute offer a window for examining early twentiethcentury ideas about the relationships between health, old age, and masculinity. The LEI literature constructed a picture of healthy, vigorous, and efficient American working men that helped to cement ideals of masculinity to ideals of health.
