RESUMO
This study aimed to analyze the chronic effect of high cognitive effort immediately before resistance exercise sessions on neuromuscular performance in untrained male adults. We used a mixed experimental design, with the group as between-participants factor and time as within-participants factor. Thirty-four participants were randomly assigned to two parallel groups: high cognitive effort (n = 17) and control (n = 17). Subjects in the control group were seated for 30 min before the resistance exercise sessions, while the high cognitive effort group completed incongruent trials of the Stroop task until subjective mental fatigue was present immediately before resistance exercise sessions. Participants attended 45 sessions over 15 weeks, consisting of three familiarizations, three baseline evaluations, 36 velocity-based training sessions, and three postexperiment evaluation sessions. Rate of force development (RFD) during the isometric mid-thigh pull, half back-squat 1-RM, and countermovement jump (CMJ) were measured before and after the 12-week intervention. A significant group × time interaction effect was found for the average RFD at 0-250 ms (p < 0.05), with greater improvements for the control group than for the high cognitive effort group. There was no group × time interaction for half back-squat 1-RM (p > 0.05). Also, there was no group × time interaction for CMJ (p > 0.05). In conclusion, repeated high cognitive effort immediately prior to resistance exercise sessions is a phenomenon that can induce greater early velocity loss and, consequently, impairs the improvements in RFD. However, this did not inhibit the increased performance for explosive strength and CMJ in male untrained adults. High cognitive effort before resistance exercise sessions should be avoided.

Introduction: Four years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency of long-term post-COVID-19 cognitive symptoms is a matter of concern given the impact it may have on the work and quality of life of affected people. Objective: To evaluate the incidence of post-acute COVID-19 cognitive symptoms, as well as the associated risk factors. Methods: Retrospective cohort, including outpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and who were assisted by a public telehealth service provided by the Telehealth Network of Minas Gerais (TNMG), during the acute phase of the disease, between December/2020 and March/2022. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, applied via phone calls, regarding the persistence of COVID-19 symptoms after 12 weeks of the disease. Cognitive symptoms were defined as any of the following: memory loss, problems concentrating, word finding difficulties, and difficulty thinking clearly. Results: From 630 patients who responded to the questionnaire, 23.7% presented cognitive symptoms at 12 weeks after infection. These patients had a higher median age (33 [IQR 25-46] vs. 30 [IQR 24-42] years-old, p = 0.042) with a higher prevalence in the female sex (80.5% vs. 62.2%, p < 0.001) when compared to those who did not present cognitive symptoms, as well as a lower prevalence of smoking (8.7% vs. 16.2%, p = 0.024). Furthermore, patients with persistent cognitive symptoms were more likely to have been infected during the second wave of COVID-19 rather than the third (31.0% vs. 21.3%, p = 0.014). Patients who needed to seek in-person care during the acute phase of the disease were more likely to report post-acute cognitive symptoms (21.5% vs. 9.3%, p < 0,001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, cognitive symptoms were associated with female sex (OR 2.24, CI 95% 1.41-3.57), fatigue (OR 2.33, CI 95% 1.19-4.56), depression (OR 5.37, CI 95% 2.19-13.15) and the need for seek in-person care during acute COVID-19 (OR 2.23, CI 95% 1.30-3.81). Conclusion: In this retrospective cohort of patients with mostly mild COVID-19, cognitive symptoms were present in 23.7% of patients with COVID-19 at 12 weeks after infection. Female sex, fatigue, depression and the need to seek in-person care during acute COVID-19 were the risk factors independently associated with this condition.

RESUMO
ABSTRACT Objective: diagnostic errors during the interpretation of an imaging test by the physician can lead to increased mortality and length of hospital stay for patients. The rate of divergence in the report given by a radiologist and an Emergency Physicians (EP) can reach over 20%. The objective of this study was to compare the unofficial tomographic reports issued by EP with the official reports issued by radiologists. Methods: a cross-sectional study, in which interpretations of the exams (documented in the medical records by the EP) of all patients undergoing computed tomography (CT) of the chest, abdomen or pelvis performed in the emergency room, at an interval of 8 months, were evaluated. These data were compared with the official reports of the radiologist (gold standard). Results: 508 patients were included. The divergence between EP and the radiologist occurred in 27% of the cases. The most common type of divergence was the one not described by the EP, but described by the radiologist. The chance of having divergence in a case of multiple trauma is 4.93 times greater in relation to the case of only blunt trauma in one segment. A statistically relevant difference was also found in the length of stay of patients who had different interpretations of the CT scans. Conclusion: the study found a relatively high divergence rate between the EP report and the official radiologist report. However, less than 4% of these were considered to be clinically relevant, indicating the ability of the EP to interpret it satisfactorily.

Aim: To characterize the perception of mental workload in administrative employees of a municipality in Chile. Methods: This was a quantitative study with a descriptive and cross-sectional design. A two-part questionnaire (bio sociodemographic background and subjective scale of mental workload (SMWS)) was used to survey a total of 47 administrative employees of a municipality in Chile. The 25.0 version of the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for the data analysis; this was followed by descriptive statistical calculation of mean, standard deviation, and range. The ethical principles of Ezequiel Emmanuel were respected, and the authorization of the scientific ethical committee was obtained. Results: Those who worked presented a high average global mental workload level (𝒙̅: 3.38). The factors with the highest mental workload exposure were task characteristics (𝒙̅: 4.09) and cognitive demand and task complexity (𝒙̅: 3.89) whereas the work rhythm factor showed the lowest results (𝒙̅: 2.47). Conclusion: The characteristics of the work performed by the administrative personnel force them to perform a mental effort associated with the completion of the task exposed to interruptions and distractions. These characteristics tires them and causes them difficulties to relax after the end of the day; this could cause negative effects on their physical and mental health.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 patients may experience Long-lasting symptoms from weeks to even months. AIM: To evaluate long-term cognitive impairment based on the severity of symptoms of COVID-19 infection in a primary health system setting. Material and Methods: From a database of 363 patients, 83 cases aged 47 ± 15 years, (58% females) were selected from June to August 2020. In patients who survived the virus, 24 infection-related symptoms were collected to create three severity clusters (mild, moderate, and severe). The follow-up time was at least seven months. Comparing the first two clusters with the severe cluster, the existence of brain fog and risk factors (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and hypothyroidism) were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients (37%) had persistent symptoms lasting up to 240 days. Fifty-one patients (61%) experienced brain fog. Concentration was affected by symptom severity (odds ratio [OR] 3.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-10.46, p = 0.02). Short- or long-term memory loss was not affected. Moreover, symptom severity was related to brain fog (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.05-9.51, p = 0.04). Patients with persistent symptoms had a concentration impairment associated with severity patterns (OR 24.3, 95% CI 1.73-340.11, p = 0.03). Conclusions: Brain fog is associated with symptom severity in COVID-19 survivors and lasts for more than eight months.

ABSTRACT Introduction: transport drivers are exposed to long working days that can cause physical fatigue due to excessive visual concentration and effort in various muscles. The occupational fatigue they experiment may be defined as an unpleasant state, because of the saturation of the muscular, mental and affective activity that induces diseases in the gastric, circulatory and immunological systems as well as sleep disorders. Objective: to analyze perceived occupational fatigue in relation with its associated factors, in drivers of transportation companies from three provinces of Ecuador. Materials and methods: a non-experimental, prospective, analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted in 141 professional drivers of three Ecuadorian provinces. The Swedish occupational fatigue questionnaire SOFI-SM was applied, which evaluated the physical, mental, psychical fatigue and irritability. A bivariate analysis was carried out with the nominal variables age, schooling, and seniority through Pearsonꞌs Chi squared and Cramer's tests. To verify the fatigue by province of origin, the analysis of covariance was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: the inadequate and unacceptable level of physical fatigue was evidenced, with a prevalence of 64.5 % of statistical inference with marital status. There were no significant differences between the total scores of the instrument and the province of origin. Conclusions: the high level of fatigue indicated the urgency of implementing recovery activities, adapting schedules and hiring more staff, since this exhaustion causes imperfections, distractions and bad decisions that lead traffic accidents. It is necessary to intervene from the occupational medicine in the evaluation of the health of the drivers to find out which pre-existing diseases could be influencing occupational fatigue.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The effect of MF induced by exposure time to social media smartphone apps on inhibitory control, heart rate variability (HRV), and high-intensity physical effort following a resistance exercise session might indicate whether strength and conditioning professionals should suggest avoiding smartphone usage before a resistance exercise session. AIM: The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of mental fatigue on inhibitory control, HRV, and countermovement jump (CMJ) in trained adults after resistance exercise. METHODS: A total of 16 trained males (21.4 ± 3.3 years) volunteered in this study. The participants performed resistance exercises with and without mental fatigue. The Stroop Task, countermovement jump, and heart rate variability were evaluated before and after the resistance exercise. The participants used smartphones in the mental fatigue condition, whereas the participants watched TV in the control condition. RESULTS: No condition × time interaction was found for the Stroop accuracy (p = 0.87), CMJ (p = 0.68), SDNN (p = 0.15), or pNN50 (p = 0.15) in the heart rate variability. An interaction was found for Stroop response time (p = 0.01) with a higher response time for the mental fatigue condition (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Mental fatigue impaired the inhibitory control performance after a resistance exercise session in trained adults.
RESUMO
Background: Mental fatigue is a psychobiological state caused by extended periods of cognitive effort, and evidence suggests that mentally fatigued athletes present impaired physical performance. Different ergogenic aids have been proposed to counteract the deleterious effects of mental fatigue, but whether brain stimulation can counteract mental fatigue is still unknown. This scenario is even more obscure considering the effects of these interventions (mental fatigue induction and brain stimulation) in a very experienced population consisting of master athletes. Method: Ten master swimmers (30 ± 6 years old and 14 ± 8 years of experience) participated in the study. They underwent four experimental conditions before an 800-m freestyle test: mental fatigue with brain stimulation; mental fatigue without brain stimulation; absence of mental fatigue with brain stimulation; and absence of mental fatigue and no brain stimulation. Mental fatigue was induced by a cognitively demanding Stroop Color Test, whereas stimulation was applied on the temporal cortex. After that, the athletes swan 800 m as fast as possible and provided their ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) every 200 m. Results: Mental fatigue was effectively induced, as evidenced by a greater fatigue perception and more errors in the last blocks of the cognitive task. Mental fatigue induction did not influence performance (time to complete the swimming trial) and RPE. Similarly, brain stimulation failed to change these two parameters, regardless of mental fatigue induction. Conclusion: The prolonged physical performance of experienced master athletes is not influenced, under the present conditions, by mental fatigue induction, cerebral stimulation, and their association.
RESUMO
We investigated the acute effects of mental fatigue induced by 30-minute use of smartphone social network apps on volume load in resistance training among recreationally trained adults. Sixteen (n = 16) adults of both sexes performed three sets of a half back-squat exercise to failure with 80% of 15RM, interspersed with 3-minutes of passive recovery between sets, before and after two different cognitive tasks: (a) use of smartphone social network apps; and (b) watching a documentary. We assessed mechanical variables and ratings of perceived exertion during the strength exercise. Relative to the documentary-viewing control condition, a 30-minute exposure to smartphone social network apps led participants toward increased perception of mental fatigue (p = 0.004) and lower volume-load during the strength exercise (p = 0.006). There were no significant differences in perceived exertion between conditions (p = 0.54), participants' motivation (p = 0.277), intra-set mechanical variables (p > 0.05), or blood lactate concentrations (p = 0.36). Our findings of an isolated possible higher-than normal RPE without changes in physiological variables, accompanying the lower volume-load in the mentally-fatigued participants support psychological, rather than physiological, bases for mental fatigue effects.

Volleyball is a team sport with high physical and perceptual-cognitive demand, hence, increasing the perception of physical and mental fatigue during a competition. To alleviate fatigue (physical and mental), mindfulness and music have been proposed. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of mindfulness-based mental versus music training on mental fatigue, physical fatigue, and recovery in elite competitive female volleyball athletes using a randomized two-controlled study with follow-up. Participants were 30 elite female Brazilian volleyball athletes. Athletes were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) mindfulness-based mental training group (MBMT); 2) music-based training group (MBT); or 3) control group (CG). Three variables were evaluated as follows: 1) recovery based on total quality recovery; 2) mental fatigue visual analog scale; and 3) physical fatigue visual analog scale. Regarding recovery, there was no difference between the MBMT, MBT, and CG groups (p > 0.05). A difference in mental fatigue was noted between MBT and CG at follow-up [F(2,26) = 5.71, p = 0.009; large]. Regarding physical fatigue, there was no difference between the MBMT, MBT, and CG groups (p > 0.05). The mindfulness intervention effectively attenuated the mental fatigue caused by competition in volleyball athletes. These results will assist coaches and staff in providing fatigue management and reinforce the applicability of mental training in sports.

The quantitative analysis of electroencephalogram (qEEG) is a suitable tool for mental fatigue (MF) assessment. Here, we evaluated the effects of MF on behavioral performance and alpha power spectral density (PSD) and the association between early alpha PSD reactivity and long-term behavioral MF impairments. Nineteen right-handed adults (21.21 ± 1.77 years old) had their EEG measured during five blocks of the visual oddball paradigm (~ 60 min). A paired t-test was used to compare first and last block values of cognitive performance and alpha PSD. The sample was divided into high (HAG) and low alpha group (LAG) by early alpha PSD median values. The behavioral performance of the HAG and LAG was compared across the blocks by a two-way ANOVA with repeated measures (groups and blocks). MF impairs general behavioral performance and increases alpha PSD. The HAG presents more behavioral impairment when compared to LAG across the task. Simple linear regression between early alpha PSD and behavioral performance across the task can predict 19 to 39% of variation in general behavior impairment by MF. In conclusion, MF induction impairs general behavioral and increases alpha PSD. The other finding was that higher alpha PSD reactivity is associated to higher long-term behavioral impairments of MF. This work contributes to existing knowledge of MF by providing evidence that the possibility of investigating early electrophysiological biomarkers to predict long-term MF impairments.

The general objective of this study is to analyze the effects of mental fatigue caused by cognitive task of motor imagery through the systematic analysis of the literature. For the literary analysis we used the electronic databases: Public Medline (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Scopus. The experimental studieswere performed in humans, both Portuguese and English, published from 2004 to 2019. The keywords used were motor imagery, sustained attention and mental fatigue. The task of Motor Imagery (IM) it is as a mental execution of body movement, however, with not motor output response. Some authors suggest people begin to develop fatigue that over 60 tracks of motor imagery. In this way, it can compromise the results of therapeutic and/or sports protocols, as well as pose an imminent risk of health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, epilepsy and Karoshi (death from overwork). Thus, in longer tasks, mental fatigue decreases performance on the task and increases the time for its execution. Therefore, it is conclusion that time of the cognitive task interferes in the reaction time due to the mental fatigue caused by the cognitive task of sustained attention.

ABSTRACT Fatigue in soccer players is traditionally investigated based on neuromuscular and metabolic factors. However, given that soccer is one of the sports that has the highest cognitive demand, it is believed that players' performance might also be influenced by the high levels of attention, and frequent decision-making required in soccer. This systematic review aimed to verify the effects of mental fatigue on physical, technical, tactical and cognitive performance of soccer players. We searched in the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus, for articles published up to 30 April 2018. We included articles that used a protocol of mental fatigue through cognitive tasks performed prior to a physical or cognitive task related to soccer. Only studies that presented an experimental design with the control condition (without mental fatigue) and the experimental condition (with mental fatigue) were selected. A total of six articles met the inclusion criteria, one study by backward reference search and other through the authors' indication. The results showed smaller distances covered in physical tests, while the effects of mental fatigue on physical performance in small-sided games were not clear. In technical tests, there were more penalties in passes and less accuracy and speed when kicking the ball when players were in conditions of mental fatigue. Regarding the tactical variables, it was found that mental fatigue had a detrimental effect on the synchronization between team players and on individual tactical performance in defensive actions. In cognitive tests, based on video recordings of game play, negative effects on the players' speed and accuracy of decision-making were observed. According to the results of the literature search, it can be inferred that mental fatigue is a factor that has a negative influence on soccer performance. Level of evidence II; Systematic review.

The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of the use of social networks in smartphones or playing video games on the passing decision-making performance in professional soccer athletes. Participants were 25 male professional soccer athletes (mean ± SD: age 23.4 ± 2.8 years). The participants performed three randomised conditions divided into three groups: control (CON), smartphone (SMA), and video game (VID). Before and after each experimental condition, the Stroop Task assessed the level of induced mental fatigue. Then, the athletes performed a simulated soccer match. A CANON® camera recorded the matches for further analysis on passing decision-making performance. A group effect was identified (p < .01) with impairment on passing decision-making performance for the SMA (p = .01, ES = 0.5) and VID (p = .01, ES = 0.5) conditions. We concluded that the use of social networks on smartphones and/or playing video games right before official soccer matches might impair the passing decision-making performance in professional soccer athletes.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of perceived fatigue with body composition and muscle quality (strength, thickness and specific torque) in young adult women. Fifty-one healthy women (31.98 ± 6.88 years) were assessed regarding perceived fatigue, body composition, knee extensors muscle strength, muscle thickness, and muscle quality. The short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire was applied to classify subjects as active or inactive. To examine the relationship between perceived fatigue and dependent variables, the Pearson's correlation was performed. Perceived fatigue was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with body weight (r = 0.469), body mass index (r = 0.369), fat mass (r = 0.469), percent body fat (r = 0.396), and relative peak torque (r = -0.378). Additionally, inactive women had significantly greater (p < 0.05) body weight, body mass index, fat mass, percent body fat, and perceived fatigue than active women. Perceived fatigue is related to body weight and fat mass, but not to muscle strength or muscle quality. Moreover, physically active women showed lower perceived fatigue, body weight, and body fat compared to physically inactive women. These results suggest that body fat may play a role in perceived fatigue and physical activity could attenuate such symptom.
