RESUMO

Both community variation and phosphorus (P) fractions have been extensively studied in aquatic ecosystems, but how P fractions affect the mechanism underlying microbial beta diversity remains elusive, especially in sediment cores. Here, we obtained two sediment cores to examine bacterial and archaeal beta diversity from mesotrophic lakes Hongfeng Lake and Aha Lake, having historically experienced severe eutrophication. Utilizing the Baselga's framework, we partitioned bacterial and archaeal total beta diversity into two components: species turnover and nestedness, and then examined their sediment-depth patterns and the effects of P fractions on them. We found that total beta diversity, species turnover or nestedness consistently increased with deeper sediment layers regarding bacteria and archaea. Notably, there were parallel patterns between bacteria and archaea for total beta diversity and species turnover, which is largely underlain by equivalent processes such as environmental selection. For both microbial taxa, total beta diversity and species turnover were primarily constrained by metal oxide-bound inorganic P (NaOH-Pi) and sediment total phosphorus (STP) in Hongfeng Lake, while largely affected by reductant-soluble total P or calcium-bound inorganic P in Aha Lake. Moreover, NaOH-Pi and STP could influence bacterial total beta diversity by driving species nestedness in Hongfeng Lake. The joint effects of organic P (Po), inorganic P (Pi) and total P fractions indicated that P fractions are important to bacterial and archaeal beta diversity. Compared to Po fractions, Pi fractions had greater pure effects on bacterial beta diversity. Intriguingly, for total beta diversity and species turnover, archaea rather than bacteria are well-explained by Po fractions in both lakes, implying that the archaeal community may be involved in Po mineralization. Overall, our study reveals the importance of P fractions to the mechanism underlying bacterial and archaeal beta diversity in sediments, and provides theoretical underpinnings for controlling P sources in biodiversity conservation.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to determine mycoplankton species diversity in relation to the physico-chemical parameters of lake waters. The research was carried out in the summer months in 15 mesotrophic lakes and showed a high ecological significance index for Rhodotorula glutinis, Epicoccum nigrum, Fusarium sporotrichioides, and Trichophyton violaceum. Mycoplankton abundance and species diversity decreased with the depth of water, which coincided with a decrease in oxygen content and organic matter concentration. A high concentration of nitrogen compounds (total nitrogen-TN and dissolved nitrogen-DN) limited the development of mycobiota in the hypolimnion. In the metalimnion, the intensive development of organisms, especially bacteria, limited mycoplankton abundance despite perfect physical and chemical conditions for its development. Finally, mycoplankton functioned the best in slightly alkaline waters.

RESUMO

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in frequency and severity, which makes their toxic secondary metabolites of microcystins (MCs) have been widely studied, especially in their distribution and influence factors in different habitats. However, the distribution of MCs on the early growth stage of harmful cyanobacteria and its influence factors and risks are still largely unknown. Thus, in the present study, two reservoirs (Lutian Reservoir and Lake Haitang) with different trophic status in China have been studied weekly from March to May in 2018, when the cyanobacteria communities were just in the early growth stage, to investigate the variation of MCs concentration and the relationships between MCs and environmental parameters. During the investigation, Lutian Reservoir and Lake Haitang were found to be mesotrophic and light eutrophic, respectively. In Lutian Reservoir, the concentration of EMCs (extracellular MCs) was obviously higher than that of IMCs (intracellular MCs) with a mean value of 0.323 and 0.264 µg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration of EMCs also fluctuated more sharply than that of IMCs. Congeners of IMC-YR and EMC-LR were respectively dominant in total concentrations of IMCs and EMCs. Unsurprisingly, in Lake Haitang, the concentrations of IMC and EMC were both significantly higher than that in Lutian Reservoir with a mean concentration of 0.482 and 0.472 µg/L, respectively. Differently, the concentration of MC-YR was dominant in both IMCs and EMCs, followed by MC-LR. In correlation analysis, the IMCs were significantly and positively correlated with the density and biomass of phytoplankton phyla and potential MCs-producing cyanobacteria and the parameters of water temperature (WT), nutrients, and organic matters. Similar results were also observed for EMCs. While the different variations of MCs in the two reservoirs might be primarily caused by the differences in WT, nutrients (especially phosphorus), organic matters, and the composition of MCs-producing cyanobacteria. In addition, the coexistence of the dominant species of Pseudoanabaena sp., which can produce a taste-and-odor compound of 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), might have a significant impact on the concentration and toxicity of MCs. Our results suggested that the risks posed by MCs at the early growth stage of cyanobacteria should also deserve our attention, especially in mesotrophic water bodies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Wet, intermittently flooded freshwater coastal and shallow water habitats are notable for their high biodiversity. Many of the usually semiaquatic annuals or small perennials common in such habitats are in decline due to the high sensitivity of such habitats to changes caused by anthropogenic and natural factors. The Euro-Siberian semiaquatic Elatine hydropiper rarely occurs in Lithuania and is protected there and in other Baltic and Central European countries. In 2020, we found a large population of Elatine hydropiper in southern Lithuania (Varena district) in Lake Pabezninkai and its exposed shores. The water level of the lake has receded by about 1.5-1.6 m since 2018, exposing wide, wet, and sandy or silty shores. The aim of this study was to determine the status of the Elatine hydropiper population and to assess its potential for long-term survival. The objectives of the study were to (a) determine the size and quantitative characteristics of the population, (b) assess the seed bank in the shallows and exposed shores of the lake, (c) assess the species diversity in the communities with Elatine hydropiper, (d) evaluate the conservation value of the studied species and the lake habitat. METHODS: The studies were carried out between 2020 and 2021. The number and coverage of plant patches as well as seed bank studies were carried out at three sites with different shoreline substrate. At each site, the number of patches and coverage was assessed in 50 sample plots of 100 cm2. The seed bank was examined in the top 5 cm of the substrate. A total of 90 substrate samples were analyzed. RESULTS: We found that Elatine hydropiper grows on ca. 0.38 ha in the lake and on ca. 0.95 ha on the shores. On the exposed shores, the mean number of Elatine hydropiper patches per 1 m2 was 2155 ± 1241.5 and their mean cover was 23.17% of the surface. Seed bank analyses revealed that the seeds and seed shells were significantly more abundant in the bottom sediments than in the shore sand or silt. The mean number of seeds per liter of soil was 85.8 ± 210.2, and the mean number of seed shells was 217.0 ± 265.8. CONCLUSIONS: The assessment of the status of the species in Lithuania according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) criteria has led us to conclude that it should now be classified as vulnerable [A3; B1ab(iii); C2a(ii); D2]. The key to protecting Elatine hydropiper and other co-occurring rare species with similar ecological and biological characteristics, as well as the plant communities of shallows and exposed wet banks, is to protect their habitats. The survival of the species and their habitats could be assured by recurring significant water level fluctuations in the lake, resulting in periodic emergence of patches of wet sand or silt free from perennial vegetation.

RESUMO

Freshwater reservoirs are a crucial source of urban drinking water worldwide; thus, long-term evaluations of critical water quality determinants are essential. We conducted this study in a large drinking water reservoir for 11 years (2010-2020). The variabilities of ambient nutrients and total suspended solids (TSS) throughout the seasonal monsoon-mediated flow regime influenced algal chlorophyll (Chl-a) levels. The study determined the role of the monsoon-mediated flow regime on reservoir water chemistry. The reservoir conditions were mesotrophic to eutrophic based on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations. An occasional total coliform bacteria (TCB) count of 16,000 MPN per 100 mL was recorded in the reservoir, presenting a significant risk of waterborne diseases among children. A Mann-Kendall test identified a consistent increase in water temperature, conductivity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) over the study period, limiting a sustainable water supply. The drought and flood regime mediated by the monsoon resulted in large heterogeneities in Chl-a, TCB, TSS, and nutrients (N, P), indicating its role as a key regulator of the ecological functioning of the reservoir. The ambient N:P ratio is a reliable predictor of sestonic Chl-a productivity, and the reservoir was P-limited. Total phosphorus (TP) had a strong negative correlation (R2 = 0.59, p < 0.05) with the outflow from the dam, while both the TSS (R2 = 0.50) and Chl-a (R2 = 0.32, p < 0.05) had a strong positive correlation with the outflow. A seasonal trophic state index revealed oligo-mesotrophic conditions, indicating a limited risk of eutrophication and a positive outcome for long-term management. In conclusion, the Asian monsoon largely controlled the flood and drought conditions and manipulated the flow regime. Exceedingly intensive crop farming in the basin may lead to oligotrophic nutrient enrichment. Although the reservoir water quality was good, we strongly recommend stringent action to alleviate sewage, nutrient, and pollutant inflows to the reservoir.

RESUMO

Interactions among multiple nutrients uptake certainly have a great effect on their retention in headwater streams, yet little research has been made to explore the quantitative characteristics of their interactions, especially in mesotrophic streams. In response, we conducted an identical series of instantaneous nutrient addition experiments, using ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) and phosphate phosphorus (PO4-P) alone or together, in two mesotrophic agricultural headwater streams in Chaohu Lake Basin, China, to quantify the relationships between nutrient concentrations and uptake rates, and examine how NH4-N and PO4-P interact to affect their individual uptake. Both the Michaelis-Menten (M-M) equation and response surface model were utilized to analyze coupled NH4-N and PO4-P uptake patterns across a range of nutrient concentrations, by fitting the kinetic processes of NH4-N and PO4-P uptake in single- and dual-nutrient additions. The capacity of both NH4-N and PO4-P uptake was increased in different degrees in dual-nutrient additions. Response surface models could quantitatively characterize the three-dimensional dynamic evolution trend of NH4-N or PO4-P uptake rates at different concentrations. The influence of PO4-P additions on NH4-N uptake was generally greater than that of NH4-N on PO4-P uptake in the five tracer tests. In addition, results of correlation analysis indicated that water temperature might be the main factor affecting the coupling of N and P uptake in mesotrophic streams and followed by hydrological factors (e.g., discharge) and channel geomorphology.

RESUMO

Ikbel Sellami, Asma Hamza, Monia El Bour, Mohammed Alaoui Mhamdi, Bernadette Pinel-alloul, and Habib Ayadi (2016) The occurrence of plankton seasonal dynamics in Mediterranean shallow lakes is characterised by a marked interannual variability, which makes it difficult to establish reliable predictions on the dynamics and functioning of plankton in these ecosystems based on the Plankton Ecology Group (PEG) model. In the present paper we study the succession of the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in the semi-arid Mediterranean Nabhana reservoir (Central Tunisia) and its relationships with environmental factors during the period from May 2005 to January 2006 in the deepest area of this oligo-mesotrophic reservoir. Water temperature was a keystone factors in the seasonal dynamics of zooplankton. Cyanobacteria dominated the phytoplankton community throughout the study year 2005-2006 (94-99%) and Microcystis aeruginosa contributed for 93% of the total cyanobacteria abundance. The zooplankton community was dominated by copepods (66%) and cladocerans (28%). The dominant species was Copidodiaptomus numidicus (66% of total zooplankton) followed by Diaphanosoma brachyurum (22% of the total zooplankton). In addition, our results showed that the peak of phytoplankton abundance (5.6 ×106 cells l-1, June) coincided with that of zooplankton abundance (2.1 ×102 ind l-1, June) contrary to the clear-water phase model. The cyanobacteria and copepods were responsible for these exceptional peaks that occurred in June, accounting respectively for 99% of the total phytoplankton and 82% of the total zooplankton. In the Nabhana reservoir, the trophic relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton were implicated in the phytoplankton abundance and dynamics. The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms is determined by biotic and abiotic factors. The dynamics between cyanobacteria and their grazers may emerge as a regulator of blooms.

RESUMO

Abstract We conducted a taxonomical study of epiphytic diatoms on the macrophytes Polygonum hydropiperoides, Ludwigia peruviana and Alternanthera philoxeroides collected in the mesotrophic reservoir Piraquara II flooded in 2009, located in the state of Paraná. A total of 135 infrageneric taxa were identified, among them five at generic level and other five are first records to the state. We provided illustration, valve metrics, meristics limits and taxonomic reference for each taxon. Also, life forms and species frequency are given. The most frequent diatoms totalized 15.3% of total identified taxa and sporadic species represented 54.7%. Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki and Brachysira neoexilis Lange-Bertalot occurred in more than 90% of analyzed samples. Among the very frequent diatoms we found other species included in Achnantidium, Fragilaria and Eunotia. The solitary Discotella stelligera (Cleve & Grunow) Houk & Klee and the short chain Aulacoseira tenella (Nygaard) Simonsen are free living species that entangle among diatoms from the biofilm.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the importance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates bacterivory in a mesotrophic subtropical environment (Lobo-Broa Reservoir, Brazil) by the quantification of their ingestion rates. The in situ experiments using fluorescently labelled bacteria (FLB) were carried out bimonthly over one year (three surveys in the dry season and three in the rainy one) at the sub-surface of two sampling points that have different trophic degrees. The ingestion rates for both ciliates and HNF were higher in the meso-eutrophic region (point 2) due to the higher water temperatures, which accelerate the metabolism of protozoans and the higher bacteria densities. Concerning total protozoan bacterivory, the HNF had the greatest grazing impact on bacterial community, especially the HNF <5µm. The data showed that HNF grazing, in addition to regulating the bacteria abundance, also induced changes to the bacterial community structure, such as increasing size and numbers of bacterial filaments. The ciliates were also important to the system bacterivory, especially in point 2, where there were high densities and ingestion rates. The protozoan bottom-up control was more important in the dry season and the top-down control was more important in the rainy season, so, these two forces are equally important to the bacterial abundance regulation in this reservoir in an annual basis.

The composition and dynamics of phytoplankton in the Aguas Tibias lake , Coconuco, Puracé, is presented in this article. Monthly sampling was performed from October 2006 to June 2007. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and nutriments (N and P) were measured. Phytoplankton was identified and quantified. Fifty-five genera were identified being Diatomophytas the dominant group, followed in importance by Cyanophyta, and Zygophyta Euchlorophyta. In the Aguas Tibias lake the Tabellaria (19.25%), Anomoeoneis (10.45%), Navicula (7.73%) and Chlamydomonas (7.33%) genera were the most abundant in the water column, compared with the Selenastrum (0.06%), Gyrosigma (0.01%), and Xantidium (0.02%) genera which showed low presence. The variations detected are not statistically significant, both in terms of space (depth) and time (sampling months). Very high values for calcium, alkalinity, calcic and total hardness and electric conductivity , due, in part, to the volcanic origin of the waterbody. Based on the kinds of algae found, the lake is proposed to be recognized as a mesotrophic ecosystem.
