RESUMO
The Candiota region, located in the extreme south of Brazil, has the largest mineral coal deposit in the country, and this activity is capable of releasing pollutants in which they are associated with the contamination of different matrices (soil, water, and air). The present study aimed to carry out a risk assessment to human health of atmospheric pollutants NO2 and SO2 and PM10-bound metal(loid)s in the municipality of Candiota, in addition to evaluating the correlation of meteorological parameters for the dynamics and potential risk of these pollutants. Pollutants were sampled from stations located almost 4 km from coal exploration activities, and the trace elements As, Cd, Se, Pb, and Ni, in addition to NO2 and SO2, were evaluated. Risk assessment was conducted taking into account the risk to adults via the inhalation route. During the sampling period, all pollutants presented values lower than national legislation or internationally accepted values, and Pb was the element that presented the highest values throughout the sampled period. The risk assessment showed no carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, even when considering the sum of the risk of all analyzed pollutants. It can be observed that the highest levels of Pb, As, and Se occurred in the winter season, while the levels of Ni and Cd were higher in the spring, and the meteorological parameters were correlated with the pollutants, even using a temporal lag of 5 days. Although the air pollutants evaluated did not present a risk to human health, continuous monitoring of regions with strong mineral exploration activity must be carried out with a view to maintaining the well-being of exposed populations, mainly because there are people living in areas closer to sources of coal pollution than distance to air quality monitoring stations.

To investigate the influence of climate on hospitalizations of sickle cell anemia (SCA) adults and children, we analyzed the health and meteorological parameters from a metropolis (1999-2018). 1462 hospitalizations were coded for SCA patients in crisis (M:F = 715:747) and 1354 hospitalizations for SCA patients without crisis (M:F = 698:656) [age = 22.9 vs 15.2 years and duration of hospitalization (DoH) = 5.7 vs 4.4 days, respectively,]. More hospitalizations were for adults than children in crisis, and for children than adults without crisis. More children and adults were hospitalized in winter andspring than in summer and autumn Hospitalizations correlated positively with humidity (lag -5), maximum pressure (lag -2), mean pressure (lag -2), and thermal amplitude (lag -2), and negatively with maximum temperature (lag -3). DoH positively correlated with minimum temperature (lag -4). Understanding these complex associations would induce attitudinal/behavioral modifications among patients and their caregivers.

Using long-term time series of meteorological and water-column parameters, the dynamics of two lakes separated by about 500 m from each other by a central lava dome, located at 4207 m above sea level in the volcano crater of Nevado de Toluca, Mexico were explored. Because of the strong wind-forcing previously measured on the volcano slope and the proximity of the lakes, wind-mixing was expected, with similar dynamics in both lakes. However, the meteorological parameters in the crater were significantly different than on the slope of the volcano, due to the dome and the high walls of the crater, which weakened wind speeds, modified wind direction, and reduced exposure to solar radiation by almost 20% in the crater compared to on the volcano slope. The rate and depth of thermal penetration into each lake differed by an order of magnitude, related with differential insolation due to crater wall shading, along with differences in transparency, most likely due to differential algal growth and suspended matter. At times, rapid surface cooling occurred during periods of reduced insolation and calm winds, leading to strong vertical convection and the formation of a characteristic step profile in the water column rather than the predicted wind mixing. These results are important for interdisciplinary studies of these and other alpine lakes and, in particular for biophysical coupling in these unique hydrological systems.

Ginkgo biloba is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine containing multiple components that contribute to its notable bioactivities. Variations of seasonal, meteorological and planting soil on the phytochemicals contents in G. biloba leaves due to the effects of growth meteorological and soil parameters were investigated in this study. The leaves of G. biloba were collected from different months and place in Zhejiang province, the contents of flavones (quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin) and terpene lactones (bilobalide, ginkgolides A, B and C) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) method. The established methods were validated with good linearity, precision, repeatability, stability, and recovery. Comprehensive analysis suggested the proper harvest time for G. biloba was in October of Zhejiang province. The result of correlation analysis with meteorological factors shows that the temperature and precipitation have non-significant effect on the main components of G. biloba. In addition, the type and content (Mn and Zn) of the soil showed significantly effect on the content of flavonoids and terpene lactones. This study enriched the knowledge on the development and utilization value of the G. biloba leaves and was useful for determining the optimal harvest time and growing condition.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: Fungal spores are ubiquitous in the atmosphere worldwide, but their distribution is not homogeneous at different locations. Most studies have compared airborne fungal spores ecology in temperate zones, but less is known about the tropics. METHODS: This study compared, through statistical analysis of archived datasets, the predominant fungal groups, patterns and meteorological variables affecting airborne fungal spore concentrations between two major cities in the Caribbean (Havana and San Juan) during the year 2015. RESULTS: In Havana, the predominant fungal group was Cladosporium while in San Juan were basidiospores. Our data provide evidence of differences and similarities in the monthly distribution of airborne spores in Havana and San Juan, but Cladosporium, ascospores y basidiospores had comparable hourly patterns in both cities and were affected by the same meteorological variables. CONCLUSION: Our study provides additional evidence to help design allergy interventions.

Poorly ventilated environments such as residences can accumulate radon gas to levels that are harmful to humans and thus produce a public health risk. To assess the risk from natural radiation due to indoor radon exposure, 222Rn measurements, using an alpha RAD7 detector, were conducted in Timóteo, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. Indoor radon concentrations, along with meteorological parameters, were measured every 2 h during both wet and dry seasons in 2017 and 2018. The mean concentration of indoor radon varied between 18.0 and 412.8 Bq m-3, which corresponded to an effective annual dose of 1.2 and 7.6 mSv y-1. Average radon concentrations were significantly higher during the winter dry season, and there was a strong positive correlation with humidity in both wet and dry season. Furthermore, concentrations showed an inverse correlation with atmospheric pressure, wind speed, air temperature, and solar radiation. The radon levels are generally above the limits recommended by international standards, meaning that mitigation measures are needed to improve air quality to reduce human exposure and risk. Finally, through the statistical analysis, it was possible to determine the differences and similarities between the sampling points concerning the geology of the place and the geographical location.

RESUMO
This study investigated the potential factors that contribute to frequent high levels of ozone as well as ozone episodes in Bangu, one of the most critical areas in the city of Rio de Janeiro regarding ozone levels. For 74 days in a two-year period (10.3%), the national air quality standard was exceeded. For the same period, a total of 378 days (51.8%) had ozone concentrations that were between 80 and 160 µg m-3. A statistical analysis of pollutant concentrations and meteorological data as well as a kinetic and mechanistic analysis of VOC reactivity showed that the high ozone concentrations did not seem to be closely related to local emissions but, rather, were related to pollutant transport and triggered by photochemical activity. The mountains in the southern and northern part of the district contribute to the increase of surface temperatures and the accumulation of pollutants. The VOC/NOx ratios corresponded to a VOC-limited process.

RESUMO
The present study aimed to study if the intensity and precocity of short-term leaf responses of Nicotiana tabacum 'Bel-W3' depended on the daily atmospheric levels of ozone and/or daily meteorological conditions in a State Park located in the city of São Paulo, SE Brazil. From 16 September to 14 October 2002, three lots of six potted plants were exposed for fourteen days. Leaf necrosis, atmospheric ozone concentrations and meteorological parameters were daily measured. The average percentage of leaf necrosis ranged from 5 percent to 20 percent. A 4th degree polynomial model was proposed to explain daily progress of leaf necrosis on plants. The average ozone levels were increased from morning (1.3-39.2 ppbv) to the midday (1.6-52.0 ppbv) and decreased in the evening (0.5-39.9 ppbv). Daily pattern of accumulated percentage of leaf necrosis was not strictly related to ozone, but was influenced by the meteorological conditions and stage of development of leaves.
