Mangroves are coastal environments that provide resources for adjacent ecosystems due to their high productivity, organic matter decomposition, and carbon cycling by microbial communities in sediments. Since the industrial revolution, the increase of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) released due to fossil fuel burning led to many environmental abnormalities such as an increase in average temperature and ocean acidification. Based on the hypothesis that climate change modifies the microbial diversity associated with decaying organic matter in mangrove sediments, this study aimed to evaluate the microbial diversity under simulated climate change conditions during the litter decomposition process and the emission of GHG. Thus, microcosms containing organic matter from the three main plant species found in mangroves throughout the State of São Paulo, Brazil (Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, and Avicennia schaueriana) were incubated simulating climate changes (increase in temperature and pH). The decay rate was higher in the first seven days of incubation, but the differences between the simulated treatments were minor. GHG fluxes were higher in the first ten days and higher in samples under increased temperature. The variation in time resulted in substantial impacts on α-diversity and community composition, initially with a greater abundance of Gammaproteobacteria for all plant species despite the climate conditions variations. The PCoA analysis reveals the chronological sequence in ß-diversity, indicating the increase of Deltaproteobacteria at the end of the process. The GHG emission varied in function of the organic matter source with an increase due to the elevated temperature, concurrent with the rise in the Deltaproteobacteria population. Thus, these results indicate that under the expected climate change scenario for the end of the century, the decomposition rate and GHG emissions will be potentially higher, leading to a harmful feedback loop of GHG production. This process can happen independently of an impact on the bacterial community structure due to these changes.

We experimentally assessed the impact of the application of herbicides and fertilizers derived from agricultural activity through the individual and simultaneous addition of glyphosate, atrazine, and nutrients (nitrogen 'N' and phosphorus 'P') on the biofilm community and their resilience when the experimental factors were removed. We hypothesize that i) the presence of agrochemicals negatively affects the biofilm community leading to the simplification of the community structure; ii) the individual or simultaneous addition of herbicides and nutrients produces differential responses in the biofilm; and iii) the degree of biofilm recovery differs according to the treatment applied. Environmentally relevant concentrations of glyphosate (0.7 mgL-1), atrazine (44 µgL-1), phosphorus (1 mg P L-1 [KH2PO4]), and nitrogen (3 mg N L-1[NaNO3]) were used. Chlorophyll a, ash-free dry weight, abundance of main biofilm groups and nutrient contents in biofilm were analyzed. At initial exposure time, all treatments were dominated by Cyanobacteria; through the exposure period, it was observed a progressive replacement by Bacillariophyceae. This replacement occurred on day 3 for the control and was differentially delayed in all herbicides and/or nutrient treatments in which the abundance of cyanobacteria remains significant yet in T5. A significant correlation was observed between the abundance of cyanobacteria and the concentration of atrazine, suggesting that this group is less sensitive than diatoms. The presence of agrochemicals exerted differential effects on the different algal groups. Herbicides contributed to phosphorus and nitrogen inputs. The most frequently observed interactions between experimental factors (nutrients and herbicides) was additivity excepting for species richness (antagonistic effect). In the final recovery time, no significant differences were found between the treatments and the control in most of the evaluated parameters, evincing the resilience of the community.

The present study describes practical implication of bioaugmentation and biostimulation processes for bioremediation of an industrial soil chronically contaminated by hydrocarbons. For this purpose, biomass production of six autochthonous hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were evaluated as inoculum of bioaugmentation strategy, by testing carbon and nitrogen sources included co-products and agro-industrial waste as sustainable and low-cost components of the growth medium. Otherwise, biostimulation was approached by the addition of optimized concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus. Microcosm assays showed that total hydrocarbons (TH) were significantly removed from chronically contaminated soil undergoing bioremediation treatment. Systems Mix (bioaugmentation); N,P (biostimulation) and Mix + N,P (bioaugmentation and biostimulation) reached higher TH removal, being 89.85%, 91.00%, 93.04%, respectively, comparing to 77.83% of system C (natural attenuation) at 90 days. The increased heterotrophic aerobic bacteria and hydrocarbon degrading bacteria counts were according to TH biodegrading process during the experiments. Our results showed that biostimulation with nutrients represent a valuable alternative tool to treat a chronically hydrocarbon-contaminated industrial soil, while bioaugmentation with a consortium of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria would be justified when the soil has a low amount of endogenous degrading microorganisms. Furthermore, the production of inoculum for application in bioaugmentation using low-cost substrates, such as industrial waste, would lead to the development of an environmentally friendly and attractive process in terms of cost-benefit.

Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been used as integrative inputs to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers. However, a holistic comprehension about PGPB-plant-microbiome interactions is still incipient. Furthermore, the interaction among PGPB and the holobiont (host-microbiome association) represent a new frontier to plant breeding programs. We aimed to characterize maize bulk soil and rhizosphere microbiomes in irradiated soil (IS) and a native soil (NS) microbial community gradient (dilution-to-extinction) with Azospirillum brasilense Ab-V5, a PGPB commercial inoculant. Our hypothesis was that plant growth promotion efficiency is a result of PGPB niche occupation and persistence according to the holobiont conditions. The effects of Ab-V5 and NS microbial communities were evaluated in microcosms by a combined approach of microbiomics (species-specific qPCR, 16S rRNA metataxonomics and metagenomics) and plant phenomics (conventional and high-throughput methods). Our results revealed a weak maize growth promoting effect of Ab-V5 inoculation in undiluted NS, contrasting the positive effects of NS dilutions 10-3, 10-6, 10-9 and IS with Ab-V5. Alpha diversity in NS + Ab-V5 soil samples was higher than in all other treatments in a time course of 25 days after sowing (DAS). At 15 DAS, alpha diversity indexes were different between NS and IS, but similar in all NS dilutions in rhizospheric samples. These differences were not persistent at 25 DAS, demonstrating a stabilization process in the rhizobiomes. In NS 10-3 +Ab-V5 and NS 10-6 Ab-V5, Ab-V5 persisted in the maize rhizosphere until 15 DAS in higher abundances compared to NS. In NS + Ab-V5, abundance of six taxa were positively correlated with response to (a)biotic stresses in plant-soil interface. Genes involved in bacterial metabolism of riboses and amino acids, and cresol degradation were abundant on NS 10-3 + Ab-V5, indicating that these pathways can contribute to plant growth promotion and might be a result of Ab-V5 performance as a microbial recruiter of beneficial functions to the plant. Our results demonstrated the effects of holobiont on Ab-V5 performance. The meta-omics integration supported by plant phenomics opens new perspectives to better understanding of inoculants-holobiont interaction and for developing better strategies for optimization in the use of microbial products.

Oily sludge is a residue from the petroleum industry composed of a mixture of sand, water, metals, and high content of hydrocarbons (HCs). The heavy oily sludge used in this study originated from Colombian crude oil with high density and low American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity. The residual waste from heavy oil processing was subject to thermal and centrifugal extraction, resulting in heavy oily sludge with very high density and viscosity. Biodegradation of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) was tested in microcosms using several bioremediation approaches, including: biostimulation with bulking agents and nutrients, the surfactant Tween 80, and bioaugmentation. Select HC degrading bacteria were isolated based on their ability to grow and produce clear zones on different HCs. Degradation of TPH in the microcosms was monitored gravimetrically and with gas chromatography (GC). The TPH removal in all treatments ranged between 2 and 67%, regardless of the addition of microbial consortiums, amendments, or surfactants within the tested parameters. The results of this study demonstrated that bioremediation of heavy oily sludge presents greater challenges to achieve regulatory requirements. Additional physicochemical treatments analysis to remediate this recalcitrant material may be required to achieve a desirable degradation rate.

These days, petroleum hydrocarbon pollution has become a global problem, because of this, bioremediation is presented as a strategy for cleaning up sites contaminated with organic pollutants, and it has an increasing role in relation to the potential it presents as a non-invasive and cost-effective technology. The aim of this study is to optimize the biomass production of Pseudomonas sp. MT1A3 strain as a soil bioremediation approach for petroleum hydrocarbon polluted environments. Factorial experimental designs were employed to study the effect of several factors of composition medium and incubation conditions on biomass production. Agro-industrial wastes such as peanut oil as carbon source, NaNO3 as nitrogen source and incubation temperature were found to be significant independent variables. These factors were further optimized using Box-Behnken design. Combination of peanut oil 18.69 g/L, NaNO3 2.39 g/L and 26.06 °C incubation temperature was optimum for maximum biomass production of MT1A3 and the model validated in a bioreactor allowed to obtain 9.67 g/L. Based on these results, this autochthonous strain was applied in bioaugmentation as a bioremediation strategy through microcosm designs, reaching 93.52% of total hydrocarbon removal at 60 days. The main objective of the current study was to assess the impact of the water taken from the 'Tunisian Refining Industries Company' on meiobenthic nematodes, before and after a series of treatments in decantation basins followed by its discharge in Bizerte bay, Tunisia. The comparison of environmental parameters of the two types of water was clearly indicative of an improvement in the quality of treated waters after a significant reduction in their loads in hydrocarbons. Overall, the water retained a good quality after being treated by 'Tunisian Refining Industries Company' before discharge in the sea. At the end of the experiment, differential responses were observed according to the richness of sediment in organic matter and hydrocarbons. Thus, it was apparent that the nematode assemblage exposed to the treated waters was closer to controls and associated to higher values of abundance, than that under untreated ones. It was also assumed that the species Microlaimus honestus De Man, 1922, Paramonohystera proteus Wieser, 1956 and Cyartonema germanicum Juario, 1972 are sensitive bioindicators of bad environmental statues and of hydrocarbon presence in the environment. On the other hand, Metoncholaimus pristiurus (Zur Strassen, 1894) Filipjev, 1918 would rather be classified as a positive bioindicative species of this type of pollutants.(AU)


O principal objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o impacto da água retirada da "Tunisian Refining Industries Company" sobre os nematoides meiobentônicos, antes e depois de uma série de tratamentos em bacias de decantação seguidos de seu descarte na baía de Bizerte, Tunísia. The organization of the roots, ganglia and the peripheral distribution of the cranial nerves of the fully formed embryos of Oreochromis niloticus are examined in the transverse serial sections. These nerves carry fibers, which were also analyzed. The results of this study demonstrated that the glossopharyngeal nerve originates by means of only one root, which leaves the cranium through the glossopharyngeal foramen. This nerve gives fibers (visceromotor) to the first internal and external levator arcus branchialis muscles. There is a single epibranchial (petrosal) ganglion located extracranially. Nervus glossopharyngeus has three rami; pharyngeus, pretramticus and posttrematicus. The ramus pharyngeus carries only viscerosensory fibers; general for the pharyngeal epithelium and special ones for the pseudobranch. General viscerosensory fibers are also carried by rami pretrematicus and posttrematicus for the pharyngeal epithelial lining. The special sensory fibers are carried by the ramus pretrematicus for the taste buds and by ramus posttrematicus for the gill filaments. The ramus pretrematicus also carries visceromotor fibers for the first adductor arcus branchialis and to the first obliquus ventralis muscles.


A organização das raízes, gânglios e a distribuição periférica dos nervos cranianos dos embriões totalmente formados de Oreochromis niloticus são examinados nas seções transversais seriais. Esses nervos carregam fibras, que também foram analisadas. Os resultados deste estudo demonstraram que o nervo glossofaríngeo se origina por meio de apenas uma raiz, que sai do crânio pelo forame glossofaríngeo. Este nervo fornece fibras (visceromotoras) para os primeiros músculos levantadores do arco branquial interno e externo. Existe um único gânglio epibranquial (petroso) localizado extracranialmente. Nervus glossopharyngeus tem três ramos; faríngeo, pretramticus e póstrematicus. O ramo faríngeo contém apenas fibras viscerossensoriais ­ gerais para o epitélio faríngeo e especiais para o pseudobrânquio. Fibras viscerossensoriais gerais também são transportadas por ramos pretrematicus e posttrematicus para o revestimento epitelial da faringe. As fibras sensoriais especiais são transportadas pelo ramus pretrematicus para as papilas gustativas e pelo ramus posttrematicus para os filamentos branquiais. O ramo pretrematicus também carrega fibras visceromotoras para o primeiro adutor arcus branchialis e para o primeiro músculo oblíquo ventral.

RESUMO

Microbial biofilms are a natural adaptation of microorganisms, typically composed of multiple microbial species, exhibiting complex community organization and cooperation. Biofilm dynamics and their complex architecture are challenging for basic analyses, including the number of viable cells, biomass accumulation, biofilm morphology, among others. The methods used to study biofilms range from in vitro techniques to complex in vivo models. However, animal welfare has become a major concern, not only in society, but also in the academic and scientific field. Thus, the pursuit for alternatives to in vivo biofilm analyses presenting characteristics that mimic in vivo conditions has become essential. In this context, the present review proposes to provide an overview of strategies to study biofilms of medical interest, with emphasis on alternatives that approximate experimental conditions to host-associated environments, such as the use of medical devices as substrata for biofilm formation, microcosm and ex vivo models.

The dark false mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata occurs as non-native species in Asia, Europe and South America. Despite the low population density usually found in its native range, M. leucophaeata forms dense clusters in newly invaded areas which lead to impacts on local organisms and environment. Some of the impacts of non-native species on newly colonized areas may be positive. However, despite the empirical evidences of increase in water transparency by freshwater dresseinids, the hypothesis that dark false mussel enhances the quality of brackish water has never been tested so far. Thus, the present study aimed to determine M. leucophaeata impacts on the water quality of a nutrient-enriched coastal lagoon by (1) analyzing a historical water dataset for pre- and post-invasion at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Brazil) and (2) experimentally testing dark false mussel direct effects on water quality. Historical field data evidenced significant lower phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll a, and higher water transparency for the post-invasion period. These pattens were also supported by time-series analyses, which detected a decreasing trend for total coliforms density and an increased trend for dissolved oxygen over time. Moreover, time series indicated a gradual increase in lagoon water level with time, but none or minor changes were evidenced for floodgates operation routine, meteorological variables, and the frequency of sewage input. In microcosms, M. leucophaeata was effective to increase water transparency and decrease E. coli densities. The combination of field and laboratory data partially supported the hypothesis that M. leucophaeata invasion promoted an improvement in lagoon water quality, but increased phosphorus availability through excretion in microcosm assays. Management of dark false mussel populations seems to be a potential strategy for water quality improvement within already invaded systems where high sewage-enriched effluents are released. However, as non-native species often unbalance ecological relationships and functioning of the invaded ecosystems, new introductions of M. leucophaeata must be avoided.

Effluents are commonly discharged into water bodies, and in order for the process to be as environmentally sound as possible, the potential effects on native water communities must be assessed alongside the quality parameters of the effluents themselves. In the present work, changes in the bacterial diversity of streamwater receiving a tannery effluent were monitored by high-throughput MiSeq sequencing. Physico-chemical and microbiological parameters and acute toxicity were also evaluated through different bioassays. After the discharge of treated effluents that had been either naturally attenuated or bioaugmented, bacterial diversity decreased immediately in the streamwater samples, as evidenced by the over-representation of taxa such as Brachymonas, Arcobacter, Marinobacterium, Myroides, Paludibacter and Acinetobacter, typically found in tannery effluents. However, there were no remarkable changes in diversity over time (after 1 day). In terms of the physico-chemical and microbiological parameters analyzed, chemical oxygen demand and total bacterial count increased in response to discharge of the treated effluents. No lethal effects were observed in Lactuca sativa L. seeds or Rhinella arenarum embryos exposed to the streamwater that had received the treated effluents. All of these results contribute to the growing knowledge about the environmental safety of effluent discharge procedures.

A wide range of anthropogenic activities have caused various problems to the aquatic environment, leading to economic, social, and environmental losses. The use of materials for the recovery of water quality is very important due to the water scarcity scenario present in different parts of the world. The use of sawdust as an organic adsorbent for P removal in eutrophic environments attempts to address both water quality preservation and possible application of the organic adsorbent as fertilizer for agricultural practices. This use will result in important contributions to the water and food security. In this work, we performed laboratory experiments to study P adsorption and to evaluate possible adsorption of metals and emerging contaminants by sawdust. The experiments were carried out in 36 microcosms (glass jars), using 50% of the flasks as treatments (containing bags with sawdust) and the rest of the flasks as control (water and sediment without sawdust). For future application of sawdust as a fertilizer it is important to be aware of the presence of possible pathogenic microorganisms, thus the presence of helminth eggs was determined in the sawdust. The results showed the tendency of P adsorption by the biosorbent; maximum adsorption occurred at 214 d (41 µg P g-1 ), after the P desorption occurred. No helminth eggs or emerging contaminants and toxic metal were detected in the sawdust after its use as biosorbent, providing an important subsidy regarding the use of the biosorbent as soil fertilizer. We evaluated the effect of AsiMax 50®, a commercial formulation of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), on the structure of both micro + nano phytoplankton (>2 µm; species composition and abundance) and cytometric populations (photosynthetic picoplankton (PPP, 0.2-2 µm), which included prokaryotic phycocyanin-rich picocyanobacteria (PC-Pcy), phycoerythrin-rich picocyanobacteria (PE-Pcy) and eukaryotic phototrophs (PEuk); and bacterioplankton (HB), heterotrophic bacteria), using a microcosms-based approach and a single 7-day exposure. Assays were performed on two different microbial assemblages sampled from freshwater bodies of two contrasting turbidity status: clear (chlorophyll a = 7.6 µgL-1, turbidity = 1 NTU) and organic turbid systems (chlorophyll a = 25.0 µgL-1, turbidity = 9 NTU). For each system, the herbicide was applied to 500 mL-Erlenmeyer flasks, at seven concentration levels of the active ingredient (a.i.): 0 (control = no addition), 0.02, 0.2, 2, 20, 200 and 2,000 mg a.i.L-1. The impact of AsiMax 50® seemed to be greater in the turbid system. In this system, total abundance of living (live) micro + nano phytoplankton showed a significant increase at lower concentrations and data were fitted to a humped-shaped curve. For both clear and organic turbid systems, micro + nano phytoplankton decreased in species richness and abundance at higher herbicide concentrations. These results suggest that 2,4-D may mimic hormonal function. Some species, such as Ochromonas sp. and Chlamydomonas sp., showed different responses to herbicide exposure between water systems. In the turbid system, the increase in abundance of the PPP fraction observed at 7-d exposure was probably due to either an increase in PE-Pcy (thus suggesting the existence of auxin pathways) or a reduction in competitive pressure by micro + nano plankton. Our results provide some evidence of the importance of using community-scale approaches in ecotoxicological studies to predict changes in freshwater ecosystems exposed to a 2,4-D-based formulation. However, caution must be taken when extrapolating these effects to real scenarios, as assays were based on a laboratory microcosm experiment.

The current knowledge about the role terrestrial ornamental plants play in constructed wetlands (CWs) has scarcely been evaluated. Likewise, little attention has been given towards the use of new support or fill media for subsurface flow CWs, which may result in the reduction of costs when implemented on a large scale. This study evaluated, during nine months, the effect of three terrestrial ornamental plants and two substrates on the elimination of pollutants in wastewaters by using fill-and-drain vertical subsurface flow CWs (FD-CWs). Sixteen microcosms were used, nine filled with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and nine with porous river stone (PRS). For each type of substrate, duplicates of microcosms were used, utilizing Anthurium sp., Zantedeschia aethiopica, and Spathiphyllum wallisii as vegetation and two other CWs without vegetation as controls. The environmental conditions, number of flowers, and height of the plants were registered. The results revealed that both substrates in the FD-CWs were efficient in removing pollutants. The average removal of pollutants in systems with vegetation revealed a positive effect on the reduction of the biochemical oxygen demand (55⁻70%), nitrates (28⁻44%), phosphates (25⁻45%), and fecal coliforms (52⁻65%). Meanwhile, in units without vegetation, the reduction of pollutants was nearly 40⁻50% less than in those with vegetation. The use of PET as a filling substrate in CWs did not affect the growth and/or the flowering of the species; therefore, its use combined with the species studied in CWs may be replicated in villages with similar wastewater problems. This may represent a reduction in implementation costs when utilizing PET recycled wastes and PRS as substrates in these systems in comparison with the typical substrates used in CWs. More studies are needed to better understand the interactions among these novel support media and the commercial terrestrial ornamental plants.

BACKGROUND: In Argentina, peanuts are stored for 3-6 months. It is important to avoid proliferation of fungi and insect pests during this period. In this study, the potential of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) microcapsules to conserve peanut kernels was evaluated in microcosms and on a pilot scale. RESULTS: In microcosm assays, microcapsules containing BHA at a dose of 1802 µg g-1 reduced 37% of total fungal count. Higher reductions (77-100%) were obtained with a combined treatment with BHA formulation (1802 µg g-1 ) plus fungicide (methyl thiophanate 0.0100 g L-1  and metalaxyl 0.0133 g L-1 ). However, germination levels of peanut seeds treated with the BHA formulation were less than 6% throughout the incubation time. In pilot-scale trials, the storage conditions allowed the control of fungal development and insect proliferation. Quantifiable levels of BHA were also detected throughout the entire storage period. The combined treatment significantly reduced fungal contamination at 2 months of storage (C1-2015: 37.41%; C1-2016: 28.48%; C2-2016: 45.02%). Seed germination of unshelled stored peanuts was not affected by the formulation. CONCLUSION: The application of the BHA formulation during storage combined with pre-seeding treatment could be an appropriate strategy to maintain the quality of the peanut kernels destined for seed. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this study, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to assess bacterial diversity and dynamics throughout different stages of leaves decomposition of three plant species (Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, and Avicennia schaueriana) in three distinct mangroves of São Paulo state, Brazil. The experiments were conducted in microcosms. Phylogenetic diversity (Faiths' PD) index showed differences between samples and suggested that some treatments like R. mangle increased their bacterial diversity through time. Principal coordinate analysis revealed that community's profile varied based on mangroves, followed by plant species and time. A clear succession patterns was observed in this study, i.e., some microorganisms with low abundance in the initial phases gradually became dominant (e.g., Alphaproteobacteria), whereas microbes that were initially predominant became low (e.g., Gammaproteobacteria). Co-occurrence analyses were performed for all times of plant degradation aiming to better understand the relationships between bacterial populations. The c-score index was done to test the randomness of the community assemblage during the stages of decomposition. For all degradation time points, the values of the observed c-score were higher than the values of the simulated c-score. This result indicated that during plant decomposition, the bacterial communities presented less co-occurrence than expected by chance and that these communities were not randomly assembled but instead they are driven by species interactions. Network analyses results showed that in the conditions presented in this experiment, the initial stages of leaf decomposition formed more connected and complex networks than the later stages. These results suggest that resource competition was a determinant in these specific mangroves during plant degradation, mainly in the initial periods.

Aquatic ecosystems worldwide have been substantially altered by human activities, which often induce changes in multiple factors that can interact to produce complex effects. Here, we evaluated the combined effects of dissolved nutrients (nitrogen [N] and phosphorus [P]; three levels: concentration found in oligotrophic streams in the Cerrado biome, 10× and 100× enriched) and oxygen (O2; three levels: hypoxic [4% O2], depleted [55% O2], and saturated [96% O2]) on plant litter decomposition and associated fungal decomposers in laboratory microcosms simulating stream conditions under distinct scenarios of water quality deterioration. Senescent leaves of Maprounea guianensis were incubated for 10 days in an oligotrophic Cerrado stream to allow microbial colonization and subsequently incubated in microcosms for 21 days. Leaves lost 1.1-3.0% of their initial mass after 21 days, and this was not affected either by nutrients or oxygen levels. When considering simultaneous changes in nutrients and oxygen concentrations, simulating increased human pressure, fungal biomass accumulation, and sporulation rates were generally inhibited. Aquatic hyphomycete community structure was also affected by changes in nutrients and oxygen availability, with stronger effects found in hypoxic treatments than in depleted or saturated oxygen treatments. This study showed that the effects of simultaneous changes in the availability of dissolved nutrients and oxygen in aquatic environments can influence the activity and composition of fungal communities, although these effects were not translated into changes in litter decomposition rates.

This study employed the use of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis to identify three of four native bacterial strains isolated from crude oil-contaminated site in Poza Rica, Veracruz, Mexico. The identified bacteria were Ochrobactrum intermedium, Pandoraea pnomenusa and Ochrobactrum sp., but SA2-09 strain was not identified. The ability of the isolates to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated at 31.61 and 54.52 mg/kg PAHs in soil, when used as crude oil in soil microcosm during 80 days of incubation at 30°C. The results demonstrated that O. intermedium biodegraded many PAHs, including the high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs fluoranthene (100% equivalent 0.24 mg/kg), benzo [b] fluoranthene (81.8% equal 0.18 mg/kg), Benzo[a]pyrene (87.0%, 0.20 mg/kg) and Benzo[g,h,i]perylene (52.7%, 0.39 mg/kg). P. pnomenusa had a degradation profile of HMW PAHs, which was similar to O. intermedium, while Ochrobactrum sp. and the strain SA-09 exhibited lower degradation rates of HMW.
