The manganese-cobalt mixed oxide nanorods were fabricated using a hydrothermal method with different metal precursors (KMnO4 and MnSO4·H2O for MnOx and Co(NO3)2⋅6H2O and CoCl2⋅6H2O for Co3O4). Bamboo-like MnO2⋅Co3O4 (B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S)) was derived from repeated hydrothermal treatments with Co3O4@MnO2 and MnSO4⋅H2O, whereas Co3O4@MnO2 nanorods were derived from hydrothermal treatment with Co3O4 nanorods and KMnO4. The study shows that manganese oxide was tetragonal, while the cobalt oxide was found to be cubic in the crystalline arrangement. Mn surface ions were present in multiple oxidation states (e.g., Mn4+ and Mn3+) and surface oxygen deficiencies. The content of adsorbed oxygen species and reducibility at low temperature declined in the sequence of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) > Co3O4@MnO2 > MnO2 > Co3O4, matching the changing trend in activity. Among all the samples, B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) showed the preeminent catalytic performance for the oxidation of toluene (T10% = 187°C, T50% = 276°C, and T90% = 339°C). In addition, the B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) sample also exhibited good H2O-, CO2-, and SO2-resistant performance. The good catalytic performance of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) is due to the high concentration of adsorbed oxygen species and good reducibility at low temperature. Toluene oxidation over B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) proceeds through the adsorption of O2 and toluene to form O*, OH*, and H2C(C6H5)* species, which then react to produce benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and benzaldehyde, ultimately converting to CO2 and H2O. The findings suggest that B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) has promising potential for use as an effective catalyst in practical applications.

BACKGROUND: In medical education, the learning environment (LE) significantly impacts students' professionalism and academic performance. Positive LE perceptions are linked to better academic outcomes. Our study, which was conducted 15 years after curriculum reform at King Saud University's College of Medicine, aimed to explore students' perspectives on their LE and identify areas for improvement. By understanding their experiences, we strive to enhance LE and promote academic success. METHODS: This mixed-method study employed an explanatory sequential approach in which a cross-sectional analytical survey phase was collected first using the Johns Hopkins Learning Environment Scale (JHLES), followed by qualitative focus groups. Findings from quantitative and qualitative methods were integrated using joint display. RESULTS: A total of 653 medical students completed the JHLES. The total average score was 81 out of 140 (16.8), and the average subscale scores ranged from 2.27 (0.95) for inclusion and safety to 3.37 (0.91) for community of peers. The qualitative approach encompasses both inductive and deductive analyses, identifying overarching themes comprising proudness, high expectations and competition, and views about the curriculum. The integration of results emphasizes the need for continued efforts to create a supportive and inclusive LE that positively influences students' experiences and academic success. CONCLUSION: This research offers valuable insights for educational institutions seeking to enhance medical education quality and support systems. Recommendations include faculty development, the cultivation of supportive environments, curriculum revision, improved mentorship programs, and initiatives to promote inclusivity and gender equity. Future research should explore longitudinal and comparative studies, innovative mixed methods approaches, and interventions to further optimize medical education experiences. Overall, this study contributes to the ongoing dialog on medical education, offering a nuanced understanding of the complex factors influencing students' perceptions and suggesting actionable strategies for improvement.

BACKGROUND: The concept of sexual satisfaction in menopausal women is very different from that in premenopausal women, and this difference is due to aging and physical, hormonal, cultural, and psychological changes. Therefore, the first step in discovering methods for assessing sexual satisfaction in postmenopausal women is to develop a measurement instrument. This study was conducted to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a sexual satisfaction instrument for postmenopausal women. METHODS: The current study is an exploratory-sequential mixed-methods research project that will be divided into two parts: qualitative and quantitative. Aligned with the primary objective of the research, which is to elucidate the concept of sexual satisfaction in postmenopausal women, the hybrid concept analysis model developed by Schwartz and Kim will be employed. This model comprises three key phases: the theoretical phase, the fieldwork phase, and the final analytical phase. Those who met the inclusion criteria and exhibited maximum variance in terms of age, educational level, employment status, and menopausal duration were recruited. The conventional content analysis will be carried out following the steps proposed by Graneheim and Lundman. Second, in the quantitative phase, the psychometric properties of the instrument were evaluated, including the content, face and construct validity and reliability via internal consistency and stability. The psychometric properties described in the COSMIN checklist will be utilized for designing the instrument. DISCUSSION: A valid and reliable scale for evaluating the sexual satisfaction of postmenopausal women should be developed, and educational content should be designed to improve the sexual satisfaction of this group of women.


Menopause is a natural event that is accompanied by numerous physical and psychological changes that create a complex period in the life of postmenopausal women. Sexual satisfaction is a component related to human sexuality and is known as the last stage of the sexual response cycle. Sexual satisfaction is defined as the emotional response resulting from the mental evaluation of positive and negative things in a sexual relationship. Sexual satisfaction is one of the important factors of satisfaction in married life. People who have sexual satisfaction have a significantly better quality of life than those who do not have sexual satisfaction. The concept of sexual satisfaction in menopausal women is very different from that in premenopausal women, and this difference is due to aging and physical, hormonal, cultural, and psychological changes. Sexual satisfaction is important for researchers for two reasons. First, sexual satisfaction provides a mechanism through which to assess a relationship partner's performance. Second, sexual satisfaction is a predictor of other aspects of the relationship, such as marital quality and stability. To discuss feelings and discover methods for achieving sexual satisfaction in postmenopausal women, it is necessary to understand the factors affecting sexual satisfaction and dissatisfaction in this group. The existing tools in the field of women's sexual satisfaction are not designed for this age group (menopausal women) and do not have the necessary comprehensiveness and adequacy to assess sexual satisfaction in menopausal women. Therefore, this study will be conducted to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the sexual satisfaction of postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Chordoma, a rare malignant tumor arising from notochordal tissue, usually occurs along the spinal axis. Only a few published reports of primary lung chordomas exist. Herein, we present a case of primary lung chordoma and discuss important considerations for diagnosing rare chordomas. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of primary lung chordoma in a 39-year-old male with a history of testicular mixed germ-cell tumor of yolk sac and teratoma. Computed tomography revealed slow-growing solid lesions in the left lower lobe. We performed wedge resection for suspected germ-cell tumor lung metastasis. Histologically, large round or oval cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm were surrounded by large cells with granular, lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. Tumor cells were physaliphorous. Immunohistochemistry was positive for brachyury, S-100 protein, epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin, and cytokeratin AE1/AE3, suggesting pulmonary chordoma. Re-examination of the testicular mixed germ-cell tumor revealed no notochordal elements. Although some areas were positive for brachyury staining, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining did not show morphological features typical of chordoma. Complementary fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of the lung tumor confirmed the absence of isochromosome 12p and 12p amplification. Thus, a final diagnosis of primary lung chordoma was established. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with a history of testicular mixed germ cell tumors, comparison of histomorphology using HE and Brachyury staining of lung and testicular tumors, and analyzing isochromosome 12p and 12p amplification in lung tumors using FISH is pivotal for the diagnosis of rare lung chordomas.

Background Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been disruptive to many experienced emergency physicians as it requires competence in a new physical skill, real-time image interpretation, and navigation of novel software for submission to the electronic health record (EHR). Incomplete documentation of a performed POCUS study used for clinical decision-making represents a potential medicolegal liability, may expose the patient to repetitive or potentially unnecessary imaging, and is a missed opportunity for reimbursement. Identifying effective facilitators of ED POCUS documentation completion requires additional investigation. Methods In the first part of this mixed-methods study, eligible attending physicians were stratified into levels of use ("high"/"low"/"never") based on recent POCUS documentation performance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with high and low utilizers to explore their perceptions of the POCUS submission workflow and their receptivity to various proposed interventions. Qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic analysis that explored perceived usefulness and usability. The second part of the study consisted of two intervention phases. First, physicians achieving minimum POCUS documentation numbers were rewarded with additional shift scheduling flexibility. In the second phase, the intervention that garnered the most interview support, daily documentation reminder emails, was implemented. The primary outcome was the individual POCUS documentation rates calculated as all studies submitted divided by all studies performed (submitted plus unsubmitted) per month. Provider-level monthly data was aggregated into a departmental rate. Results Interviews were conducted with 12 physicians, six from the highest and six from the lowest documentation quartiles. Both groups supported the same two proposed interventions: reminder emails ranked first, then monetary rewards ranked second. High utilizers emphasized the clinical utility of POCUS, whereas low utilizers expressed concerns over "double billing" and exposure to medicolegal liability with uncertain scan interpretations. For low utilizers, a documentation decision could be dependent on the performing resident physician's displayed confidence. Both groups voiced frustration with the need to use a separate program, Qpath (Telexy Healthcare, Inc, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada), for POCUS documentation. During intervention phase one, the aggregate departmental documentation rate increased from 44.6% to 60.1% with the introduction of the schedule request incentive. This improvement was seen across all documentation quartiles. The departmental rate remained stable and did not improve further following the addition of the daily documentation reminder emails in intervention phase two. When reminder emails ceased yet the day-off request incentive continued, the departmental rate did not drop. Conclusions The implementation of a non-financial shift scheduling incentive correlated with the largest increase in departmental POCUS documentation rate. Interviewees incorrectly predicted that email reminders would be the most influential intervention highlighting a mismatch between physician perception and effective drivers of behavior change. Further investigation may focus on determining the size and longevity of the isolated impact of a schedule request incentive, as one might expect diminishing marginal utility.

Several methods in nonadiabatic molecular dynamics are based on Madelung's hydrodynamic description of nuclear motion, while the electronic component is treated as a finite-dimensional quantum system. In this context, the quantum potential leads to severe computational challenges and one often seeks to neglect its contribution, thereby approximating nuclear motion as classical. The resulting model couples classical hydrodynamics for the nuclei to the quantum motion of the electronic component, leading to the structure of a complex fluid system. This type of mixed quantum-classical fluid models has also appeared in solvation dynamics to describe the coupling between liquid solvents and the quantum solute molecule. While these approaches represent a promising direction, their mathematical structure requires a certain care. In some cases, challenging higher-order gradients make these equations hardly tractable. In other cases, these models are based on phase-space formulations that suffer from well-known consistency issues. Here, we present a new complex fluid system that resolves these difficulties. Unlike common approaches, the current system is obtained by applying the fluid closure at the level of the action principle of the original phase-space model. As a result, the system inherits a Hamiltonian structure and retains energy/momentum balance. After discussing some of its structural properties and dynamical invariants, we illustrate the model in the case of pure-dephasing dynamics. We conclude by presenting some invariant planar models.

Introduction: Small tumors may be difficult to identify visually and require preoperative effort to locate. Recent advancements in mixed reality technology have improved surgical accuracy in various departments. Here, we present the application of mixed reality-assisted surgery and a guiding marker in the case of small retroperitoneal metastasis of uterine cancer. Case presentation: A 67-year-old female with a history of uterine cancer had a retroperitoneal metastasis in the lateroconal fascia near the right diaphragm, measuring 2 cm and infiltrating the peritoneum. We performed precise surgical planning using the preoperative mixed reality software "Holoeyes" on a head-mounted display called HoloLens2. Novel techniques, including ultrasonography-guided placement of a guiding marker and strategic port-site placement facilitated by HoloLens2, ensured accurate tumor identification and laparoscopic resection with minimal blood loss and no intraoperative complications. Conclusion: The use of mixed reality-assisted surgery and a guiding marker effectively enhanced the precision of retroperitoneal tumor resection.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalate acid esters (PAHs & PAEs), known as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), widely exist in daily life and industrial production. Previous studies have suggested that PAHs & PAEs may modify the intrauterine homeostasis and have adverse effects on fetal development. However, epidemiological evidence on the associations between PAHs & PAEs and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is still limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of prenatal PAHs &PAEs exposure on the risk of GDM and hyperglycemia in pregnant women. METHODS: The study population was a total of 725 pregnant women from a prospective birth cohort study conducted from December 2019 to December 2021. Blood glucose levels were collected by the hospital information system. Urinary PAHs & PAEs concentrations were determined by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The Poisson regression in a generalized linear model (GLM), multiple linear regression, quantile-based g-computation method (qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to explore and verify the individual and overall effects of PAHs & PAEs on glucose homeostasis. Potential confounders were adjusted in all statistical models. RESULTS: A total of 179 (24.69%) women were diagnosed with GDM. The Poisson regression suggested that a ln-unit increment of 4-OHPHE (4-hydroxyphenanthrene) (adjusted Risk Ratio (aRR) = 1.13; 1.02-1.26) was associated with the increased GDM risk. Mixed-exposure models showed similar results. We additionally found that MBZP (mono-benzyl phthalate) (aRR = 1.19; 1.02-1.39) was positively related to GDM risk in qgcomp model. Although neither model demonstrated that 2-OHNAP (2-hydroxynaphthalene) and 9-OHFLU (9-hydroxyfluorene) increased the risk of GDM, 2-OHNAP and 9-OHFLU exposure significantly increased blood glucose levels. BKMR model further confirmed that overall effects of PAHs & PAEs were significantly associated with the gestational hyperglycemia and GDM risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our study presents that environmental exposure to PAHs & PAEs was positively associated with gestational glucose levels and the risks of developing GDM. In particular, 2-OHNAP, 9-OHFLU, 4-OHPHE and MBZP may serve as important surveillance markers to prevent the development of GDM.

BACKGROUND: Lung function is a key outcome used in the evaluation of disease progression in cystic fibrosis. The variability of individual lung function measurements over time (within-individual variability) has been shown to predict subsequent lung function changes. Nevertheless, the association between within-individual lung function variability and demographic and genetic covariates has not been quantified. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal analysis of data from a cohort of 7099 adults with cystic fibrosis (between 18 and 49 years old) from the UK cystic fibrosis registry, containing annual review data between 1996 and 2020. A mixed-effects location-scale model is used to quantify mean FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 s) trajectories and FEV1 within-individual variability as a function of sex, age at annual review, diagnosis after first year of life, homozygous F508 genotype and birth cohort. RESULTS: Mean FEV1 decreased with age and lung function variability showed a near-quadratic trend by age. Males showed higher FEV1 mean and variability than females across the whole age range. Earlier diagnosis and homozygous F508 genotype were also associated with higher FEV1 mean and variability. Individuals who died during follow-up showed on average higher lung function variability than those who survived. CONCLUSIONS: Key variables known to be linked with mean lung function in cystic fibrosis are also associated with an individual's lung function variability. This work opens new avenues to understand the role played by lung function variability in disease progression and its utility in predicting key outcomes such as mortality.

AIM: To describe the activities nurses perceived to be delegable to other staff (delegable activities) in order to estimate the time nurses spend on delegable activities and explore nurses' reasons for not delegating these activities. DESIGN: Mixed-methods explanatory sequential. METHODS: In total, 236 nurses from 27 medical and surgical wards of five hospitals in northern Italy completed a web-based survey during a single shift between June and July 2022. Minutes spent on delegable activities, staff member to whom participants could have delegated and reason(s) for not delegating were reported. Chief nurses provided specific wards' characteristics using a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore delegable activities and reasons for not delegating. Quantitative and qualitative results were merged using joint displays. RESULTS: Participants spent approximately one-quarter of their time performing delegable activities, mainly delegable to nurse aides or nurse clerks, and performed due to a lack/shortage of staff or their concurrent participation in other activities. Participants recognized that activities requiring clinical assessment and decision-making skills cannot be delegated, whereas technical activities and indirect care should be delegated. Organizational, structural and cultural factors, as well as patient characteristics, available staff and experience affected delegation, leading nurses to perform delegable activities to ensure patient care. CONCLUSION: Nurses spend a considerable part of their time on delegable activities due to a lack of staff or support services and suboptimal organization, which could be addressed by optimal staff management, but also to the complexity of the contexts, including individual and cultural factors that should be addressed through policy interventions. IMPACT: This study estimates the time nurses spend on delegable activities in acute care settings. Our findings highlighted the reasons that sustain the decision not to delegate that policymakers, healthcare managers, and nurse educators should consider to promote nurses' delegation skills. AIM: To evaluate healthcare professional (HCP) students clinical learning experiences' whilst undertaking placements in a student-led clinical learning environment (SLCLE) and any changes in self-reported ratings of confidence. BACKGROUND: The English NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (2023) highlights the need to expand domestic education of HCPs to meet workforce shortages. The demand for quality clinical placements to support the preparation of HCP students remains a challenge globally. A creative solution has been the development of student-led learning clinical environments in healthcare settings. SLCLEs provide high-quality learning experience, increase clinical placement capacity whilst maintaining patient care standards. A multisite NHS Trust adopted this model as evidence suggests HCP students will be better prepared on qualification to adopt registered practitioner professional responsibilities. This model has been integrated across three hospital sites within a large teaching hospital, providing care for a diverse population and designed to accommodate students from a range of HCP disciplines and higher educational institutions. DESIGN: A mixed methods convergent design. METHODS: An online survey was administered to SLCLE allocated nursing and allied health profession (AHP) undergraduate and graduate-entry first, second and third-year students (n=132). Face to face focus groups/individual interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of student participants (n=80) to evaluate their experiences of clinical learning in SLCLEs. Survey data were analysed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests, interviews using framework method. RESULTS: Undergraduate and graduate-entry students from four UK universities completed the survey (n=132), 103 students (78 %) responded. Most were year 2 students (n=43/42 %), pursuing nursing programmes (n=82/80 %). Most considered the SLCLE met their expectations (n=76/74 %), reported increased confidence post-placement (n=84/82 %), felt supported by staff (n=80/78 %), peers (n=93/90 %) and clinical educators (n=93/90 %). Self-reported confidence scores post-SLCLE were significantly higher than pre-SLCLE. On-line pre-placement information was infrequently accessed yet identified as an omission. Four themes were identified: (i) preconceptions and initial anxiety; (ii) empowerment, growth and a unique learning experience; (iii) collaborative inter-professional learning and support; and (iv) insights and anticipations. CONCLUSIONS: The SLCLE allocation enhanced students' confidence and knowledge. Support from clinical educators, ward staff and doctors was perceived as invaluable for creating a positive learning culture. Peer support and opportunities to lead care delivery contributed to students' professional development. The format and method for providing pre-placement information needs review as do strategies for avoiding delays in completing assessment documentation. Overall, the SLCLE experience offers much potential as a nurturing and effective learning environment for HCP students.

Developing environmentally friendly and highly efficient inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) encounters significant challenges, specifically the potential toxicity and degradation of thin films in hybrid organic-inorganic photovoltaics (PV). We employed theoretical design strategies that produce hysteresis-reduced, efficient, and stable PSCs based on composition and interface engineering. The devices include a mixed-organic-cation perovskite formamidinium methylammonium tin iodide ( FAMASnI 3 ) as an absorber layer and zinc oxide (ZnO) together with a passivation film phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester ( PC 61 BM ) as a double-electron transport layer (DETL). Furthermore, a nickel oxide (NiO) layer and a trap-free junction copper iodide (CuI) are used as a double-hole transport layer (DHTL). The optoelectronic characterization measurements were carried out to understand the physical mechanisms that govern the operation of the devices. The high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.27% and 23.50% were achieved in 1D and 2D simulations, respectively. This study illustrates that composition and interface engineering enable eco-friendly perovskite solar cells, improving performance and advancing clean energy.

BACKGROUND: The concept of collaborative approaches involves community residents in joint decision-making processes to maintain or enhance their material and social conditions. During COVID-19, public services saw the benefits of actively collaborating with communities and involving residents in decision-making processes. As communities have resources and assets, they are well-placed to contribute to developing local health and wellbeing initiatives. An interdisciplinary and nationally funded three-phase research programme, "Mobilising community assets to tackle health inequalities", was established with the objective of utilising local, cultural, and natural assets to support health and wellbeing. The current study aimed to synthesise evidence collected by research teams awarded funding in phase one of the programme, comprising academic and non-academic, health and social care, voluntary and community partners. METHODS: Ten online focus groups were conducted with research teams from across the UK exploring the successes and challenges of partnership working to tackle health inequalities using collaborative approaches to community-based research. Eight focus group questions were split between partnership working and health inequalities. RESULTS: Thematic and content analysis produced 185 subthemes from which 12 themes were identified. Major themes representing an above average number of coded responses were research evidence; funding; relationships with partners; health inequalities and deprivation; community involvement; and health service and integrated care systems. Minor themes were link workers and social prescribing; training and support; place-based factors; longevity of programmes; setting up and scaling up programmes; and mental health. CONCLUSIONS: Successes included employing practice-based and arts-based methods, being part of a research project for those not normally involved in research, sharing funding democratically, building on established relationships, and the vital role that local assets play in involving communities. Challenges involved a lack of sustainable financial support, the short-term nature of funding, inconsistencies in reaching the poorest people, obtaining the right sort of research evidence, making sufficient research progress, building relationships with already over-burdened health care staff, and redressing the balance of power in favour of communities. Despite the challenges, participants were mainly optimistic that collective approaches and meaningful co-production would create opportunities for future research partnerships with communities.

Objectives: Mixed-phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) is rare in the clinic, accounting for approximately 2%-5% of acute leukemia cases. Methods: In this study the cohort included 126 patients, of which 125 cases were from re-examined published data and current patients from Shenzhen Longhua District Central Hospital, carrying an ETV6-ABL1 rearrangement from April 15, 2020 to December 19, 2020. The ETS variant transcription factor 6-Abelson proto-oncogene 1 (ETV6-ABL1) fusion gene is mainly seen in malignant hematological diseases such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Positivity of both MPAL and ETV6-ABL1 suggest a poor prognosis. This is the first report of B lymphocytic/myeloid mixed-phenotype acute leukemia with ETV6-ABL1 fusion gene positivity. Complete remission was achieved with chemotherapy for lymphoid and myeloid leukemia and targeted therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Results: The level of ETV6-ABL1/ABL decreased from 23.056% to 11.165%. After consolidation chemotherapy, the patient underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation but died due to intestinal rejection. There are 126 cases of ETV6-ABL1 fusion gene transcript expression in numerous hematologic malignancies reported to date, including 48 cases of ALL, 12 of AML, and 65 of MPN. Eosinophilia is a common characteristic, especially in MPN patients. Conclusion: Survival analysis suggests that the survival time of ALL and MPN patients receiving TKI treatment is better than that of patients not receiving this treatment. Dasatinib or nilotinib, especially the former, is more effective than imatinib for MPN.

This study proposes a systematic approach to address ergonomic factors, including physical, environmental and psychosocial aspects, in solving assembly line balancing problems. A three-stage framework is developed, starting with determining weights for ergonomic risk assessment methods using the interval-valued spherical fuzzy analytical hierarchy process. In the second stage, a fuzzy logic model for integrated ergonomic risk assessment is constructed based on these weights, and the integrated ergonomic risk score is determined. In the third stage, a mathematical model is formulated to minimise the cycle time while balancing the ergonomic risk level. A case study conducted in a wire harness factory validated the effectiveness of the proposed approach, showing a 10-11% improvement in line efficiency and a 12-25% enhancement in ergonomic risk balancing performance. These findings underscore the potential benefits of implementing this approach, which can significantly improve occupational safety and overall performance.


This article presents a practical and systematic approach for enhancing ergonomic conditions in assembly lines. The proposed approach aims to balance the ergonomic risk level while minimising the cycle time by considering physical, environmental and psychosocial risk factors. A case study conducted in a wire harness factory demonstrated significant improvements in balancing ergonomic risks, highlighting the real-world applicability of this research.

The COVID-19 pandemic generated distinct mental health challenges, characterised by stress and anxiety due to its unpredictable duration and continuous threat. This study examined the role of meditation practice on anxiety symptoms and perceived stress, considering co-variables such as self-compassion, acceptance, awareness, brooding, lockdown duration, and sociodemographic characteristics. The study used a longitudinal design and data were collected through online surveys from April 2020 to January 2021 (at four different time points) and included 238 participants from Portugal (165 had prior experience with meditation practices, 73 were non-meditators) with a mean age of 43.08 years (SD = 10.96). Linear mixed models revealed that over time, during the lockdown, the non-meditators group demonstrated a greater increase of anxiety symptoms (ß = -0.226, SE = 0.06, p = 0.006) and perceived stress (ß = -0.20, SE = 0.06, p = 0.004), whereas the meditators group showed non-significant (p > 0.05) variations in anxiety and stress symptoms during the same period of time. The effect of meditation on anxiety symptoms was moderated by sex, days of lockdown, self-compassion, and acceptance. The effect of meditation on perceived stress was moderated by sex, years of education, days of lockdown, and levels of awareness. Additionally, the study explored the potential predictive effect of different meditation session lengths, indicating that longer meditation practices offered greater protection against an increase in anxiety symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of cultivating self-regulation skills and investing in preventive mental health strategies to promote well-being and autonomy. Mental health professionals should prioritise educating communities on evidence-based practices like meditation and compassion exercises to enhance overall health.

Linear mixed models (LMMs) are a commonly used method for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that aim to detect associations between genetic markers and phenotypic measurements in a population of individuals while accounting for population structure and cryptic relatedness. In a standard GWAS, hundreds of thousands to millions of statistical tests are performed, requiring control for multiple hypothesis testing. Typically, static corrections that penalize the number of tests performed are used to control for the family-wise error rate, which is the probability of making at least one false positive. However, it has been shown that in practice this threshold is too conservative for normally distributed phenotypes and not stringent enough for non-normally distributed phenotypes. Therefore, permutation-based LMM approaches have recently been proposed to provide a more realistic threshold that takes phenotypic distributions into account. In this work, we will discuss the advantages of permutation-based GWAS approaches, including new simulations and results from a re-analysis of all publicly available Arabidopsis thaliana phenotypes from the AraPheno database.

BACKGROUND: Trust remains a critical concept in healthcare provision, but little is known about the ability of health policy and interventions to stimulate more trusting relationships between communities and the health system. The CONNECT (Community Network Engagement for Essential Healthcare and COVID-19 Responses Through Trust) Initiative in Lao PDR provided an opportunity to assess the community-level impact of a trust-building community engagement approach. METHODS: A mixed-method process evaluation was implemented from 10/2022-12/2023 among 14 diverse case study communities in four provinces across Lao PDR. Data collection involved two rounds of census surveys (3161 observations incl. panel data from 618 individuals) including an 8-item trust scale, 50 semi-structured interviews with villagers, and 50 contextualizing key informant interviews. The two data collection rounds were implemented before and three months after village-based CONNECT activities and helped discern impacts among activity participants, indirectly exposed villagers, and unexposed villagers in a difference-in-difference analysis. RESULTS: Stakeholders attested strong support for the CONNECT Initiative although community-level retention of trust-related themes from the activities was limited. Quantitative data nevertheless showed that, at endline, the 8-item trust index (from [-8 to +8]) increased by 0.95 points from 4.44 to 5.39 and all trust indicators were universally higher. Difference-in-difference analysis showed that villagers exposed to the CONNECT activities had a 1.02-index-point higher trust index compared to unexposed villagers. Trust impacts improved gradually over time and were relatively more pronounced among men and ethnic minority groups. CONCLUSIONS: The CONNECT Initiative had considerable direct and systemic effects on community members' trust in their local health centers in the short term, which arose from strong stakeholder mobilization and gradual institutional learning. Relational community engagement approaches have the potential to create important synergies in health policy and broader cross-sectorial strategies, but also require contextual grounding to identify locally relevant dimensions of trust.

The identification of novel, yet easily measurable biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress might assist in the diagnosis and management of patients with rheumatic diseases (RDs). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the circulating concentrations of bilirubin, the end product of heme metabolism and a potent endogenous antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, in patients with RDs and healthy controls. The electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to 31 December 2023 for relevant articles. We evaluated the risk of bias and the certainty of evidence using the Joanna Briggs Checklist and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation Working Group system, respectively. In 17 eligible studies, all with low risk of bias, compared to controls, patients with RDs had significantly lower concentrations of total bilirubin (standard mean difference, SMD=-0.68, 95% CI -0.91 to -0.44, p<0.001; I2 = 92.5%, p<0.001; low certainty of evidence), direct (conjugated) bilirubin (SMD=-0.67, 95% CI -0.92 to -0.41, p<0.001; I2 = 81.7%, p<0.001; very low certainty of evidence), and the active antioxidant and anti-inflammatory indirect (unconjugated) form of bilirubin (SMD=-0.71, 95% CI -1.18 to -0.24, p=0.003; I2 = 95.1%, p<0.001; very low certainty of evidence). The results of the meta-analysis were stable in sensitivity analysis. In meta-regression, there were no significant associations between the SMD of total bilirubin and several clinical and demographic characteristics, including age, male to female ratio, number of participants, liver enzymes and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In subgroup analysis, the SMD of total bilirubin was significant across a range of RDs, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, primary Sjögren syndrome, and myositis. Therefore, the results of our systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that the reductions in bilirubin concentrations observed in patients with RDs reflect a state of impaired antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defence due to bilirubin consumption and highlight the promising role of this endogenous product as a biomarker of RDs.
