RESUMO

Multiple beneficial effects have been attributed to green tea catechins (GTCs). However, the bioavailability of GTCs is generally low, with only a small portion directly absorbed in the small intestine. The majority of ingested GTCs reaches the large intestinal lumen, and are extensively degraded via biotransformation by gut microbiota, forming many low-molecular-weight metabolites such as phenyl-γ-valerolactones, phenolic acids, butyrate, and acetate. This process not only improves the overall bioavailability of GTC-derived metabolites but also enriches the biological activities of GTCs. Therefore, the intra- and inter-individual differences in human gut microbiota as well as the resulting biological contribution of microbial metabolites are crucial for the ultimate health benefits. In this review, the microbial degradation of major GTCs was characterized and an overview of the in vitro models used for GTC metabolism was summarized. The intra- and inter-individual differences of human gut microbiota composition and the resulting divergence in the metabolic patterns of GTCs were highlighted. Moreover, the potential beneficial effects of GTCs and their gut microbial metabolites were also discussed. Overall, the microbial metabolites of GTCs with higher bioavailability and bioactive potency are key factors for the observed beneficial effects of GTCs and green tea consumption.

Membrane fouling is a bottleneck issue that hindered the further application of ultrafiltration technology. To alleviate membrane fouling, coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) process using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and PACl-Al13 with high proportion of Al13O4(OH)247+ as coagulants, respectively, were investigated at various pH conditions. Results indicated that an increase in solution pH contributed to larger floc size and looser floc structure for both PACl and PACl-Al13. It was conducive to the formation of more porous cake, as evidenced by mean pore area and pore area distribution of cake, leading to lower reversible fouling. Furthermore, humic acid (HA) removal presented a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of pH. The optimal HA removal was achieved at pH 6 regardless of coagulant type, suggesting that the slightest irreversible fouling should be occurred at this point. Interestingly, the irreversible fouling with PACl coagulant achieved a minimum value at pH 9, while the minimal irreversible fouling with PACl-Al13 was observed at pH 6. We speculated that the cake formed by PACl could further intercept HA prior to UF process at alkaline pH. Furthermore, compared with PACl, PACl-Al13 had a stronger charge neutralization ability, thus contributing to more compact floc structure and higher HA removal at various pH conditions. By UF fractionation measurement, higher HA removal for PACl-Al13 was due to higher removal of HA with molecular weight less than 50 kDa.

BACKGROUND: Delayed spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) following central neuraxial block (CNB) is a rare but serious complication. The underlying causes of SEH associated with neuraxial anesthesia are still unclear. Furthermore, the decision between surgical intervention and conservative management for SEH remains a complex and unresolved issue. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of delayed SEH in a 73-year-old woman who underwent vaginal hysterectomy under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia, with the administration of postoperative anticoagulants to prevent deep vein thrombosis on the 1st postoperative day (POD). She experienced symptoms 56 h after CNB. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a dorsal SEH at the L1-L4 level with compression of the thecal sac. On conservative treatment, full recovery was achieved after six months. CONCLUSIONS: This case reminds anesthesiologists should be alert to the possible occurrence of a delayed SEH following CNB, particularly with the administration of anticoagulants. Immediate neurological evaluation of neurological deficit and MRI are advised. Conservative treatment combined with close and dynamic neurological function monitoring may be feasible for patients with mild or nonprogressive symptoms even spontaneous recovery.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial genomes often encode structures similar to phage capsids (encapsulins) and phage tails which can be induced spontaneously or using genotoxic compounds such as mitomycin C. These high molecular-weight (HMW) putative antibacterial proteins (ABPs) are used against the competitive strains under natural environment. Previously, it was unknown whether these HMW putative ABPs originating from the insect pathogenic Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium Brevibacillus laterosporus (Bl) isolates (1821L, 1951) are spontaneously induced during the growth and pose a detrimental effect on their own survival. Furthermore, no prior work has been undertaken to determine their biochemical characteristics. RESULTS: Using a soft agar overlay method with polyethylene glycol precipitation, a narrow spectrum of bioactivity was found from the precipitated lysate of Bl 1951. Electron micrographs of mitomycin C- induced filtrates showed structures similar to phage capsids and contractile tails. Bioactivity assays of cell free supernatants (CFS) extracted during the growth of Bl 1821L and Bl 1951 suggested spontaneous induction of these HMW putative ABPs with an autocidal activity. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of spontaneously induced putative ABPs showed appearance of ~ 30 kDa and ~ 48 kDa bands of varying intensity across all the time intervals during the bacterial growth except in the initial hours. Statistically, spontaneously induced HMW putative ABPs of Bl 1951 exhibited a significant decrease in the number of viable cells of its producer strain after 18 h of growth in liquid. In addition, a significant change in pH and prominent bioactivity of the CFS of this particular time period was noted. Biochemically, the filtered supernatant derived from either Bl 1821L or Bl 1951 maintained bioactivity over a wide range of pH and temperature. CONCLUSION: This study reports the spontaneous induction of HMW putative ABPs (bacteriocins) of Bl 1821L and Bl 1951 isolates during the course of growth with potential autocidal activity which is critically important during production as a potential biopesticide. A narrow spectrum of putative antibacterial activity of Bl 1951 precipitate was found. The stability of HMW putative ABPs of Bl 1821L and Bl 1951 over a wide range of pH and temperature can be useful in expanding the potential of this useful bacterium beyond the insecticidal value.

INTRODUCTION: Antithrombin (AT) deficiency is a rare but highly thrombogenic inherited thrombophilia. Its association with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO) is undefined. There is limited guidance on managing AT deficiency in pregnancy. Some significant issues remain controversial, including risk assessment for prophylactic anticoagulation, anticoagulant therapy, and monitoring. Our goal was to examine if the antepartum management of patients with AT deficiency affected their pregnancy outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center observational study included pregnant women with inherited AT deficiency in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2013 and 2024. RESULTS: Seventeen pregnancies in 6 women with AT deficiency were identified. A total of 7 pregnancies received adjusted-dose low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) and were monitored by anti-Xa level, AT activity, and D-dimer. There were 5 live births (all received LMWH), 7 second-trimester abortions (1 received LMWH), and 5 early pregnancy losses (1 received LMWH). There were 5 abruptio placentae events (3 received LMWH) and 7 thrombotic events (2 received LMWH). CONCLUSIONS: AT deficiency is at least an important partial factor contributing to APO. It is suggested to make a full assessment of AT patients both for venous thrombus embolism and APO risk. We observed a high prevalence of heparin resistance and a positive correlation between adequate anticoagulation and pregnancy outcome based on tight monitoring with anti-Xa level and timely adjustment of the LMWH dosage.

BACKGROUND: Tinzaparin could be easier to manage than unfractionated heparin, in patients with severe renal impairment. However, clinical and pharmacological data regarding its use in such patients are lacking. The aims of this study were to determine, in patients with eGFR<30 mL.min-1: tinzaparin pharmacokinetics (PK) parameters, using a population PK approach and bleeding and thrombotic complications. METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational single-center study, including in-patients with eGFR< 30 mL.min-1, receiving prophylactic (4500 IU.day-1) or therapeutic (175 IU.kg-1.day-1) tinzaparin. Measured anti-Xa levels were analyzed using a non-linear mixed effects modelling approach. Individual predicted tinzaparin exposure markers at steady state were calculated for each patient and dosing regimen. The PK was also evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulations, based on the final covariate model parameter estimates. RESULTS: Over a 22-month period, 802 tinzaparin treatment periods in 623 patients were analysed: two-thirds received a prophylactic dose, 66% had an eGFR<20 mL.min-1, and 25% were on renal replacement therapy. In patients for whom anti-Xa measurements were performed (n=199, 746 values), PK parameters, profiles and Cmax were comparable to those in patients without renal impairment or in healthy volunteers. In the whole population, major bleeding occurred in 2.4% and 3.5% of patients receiving prophylactic and therapeutic doses, over a median 9- and 7-days treatment period, respectively. No patients had thrombotic complication. CONCLUSION: Tinzaparin PK parameters and profiles were not affected by renal impairment. This suggests that tinzaparin, at therapeutic or prophylactic dose, could be an alternative to unfractionated heparin in hospitalized patients with severe renal impairment.

The intestinal barrier weakens and chronic gut inflammation occurs in old age, causing age-related illnesses. Recent research shows that low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), besides anticoagulation, also has anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects, protecting the intestinal barrier. This study aims to analyze the effect of LMWH on the intestinal barrier of old male rodents. This study assigned Sprague-Dawley male rats to four groups: young (3 months), young + LMWH, old (20 months), and old + LMWH. The LMWH groups received 1 mg/kg LMWH via subcutaneous injection for 7 days. Optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine morphological changes in intestinal mucosa due to aging. Intestinal permeability was measured using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran. ELISA kits were used to measure serum levels of IL-6 and IL-1ß, while Quantitative RT-PCR detected their mRNA levels in intestinal tissues. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry (IHC) evaluated the tight junction (TJ) protein levels such as occludin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), and claudin-2. Western blotting assessed the expression of the apoptosis marker cleaved caspase 3, while IHC was used to detect LGR5+ intestinal stem cells. The intestinal permeability of aged rats was significantly higher than that of young rats, indicating significant differences. With age, the protein levels of occludin and ZO-1 decreased significantly, while the level of claudin-2 increased significantly. Meanwhile, our study found that the levels of IL-1ß and IL-6 increased significantly with age. LMWH intervention effectively alleviated age-related intestinal barrier dysfunction. In aged rats treated with LMWH, the expression of occludin and ZO-1 proteins in the intestine increased, while the expression of claudin-2 decreased. Furthermore, LMWH administration in aged rats resulted in a decrease in IL-1ß and IL-6 levels. LMWH also reduced age-related cleaved caspase3 expression, but IHC showed no difference in LGR5+ intestinal stem cells between groups. Research suggests that LMWH could potentially be a favorable therapeutic choice for age-related diseases associated with intestinal barrier dysfunction, by protecting TJ proteins, reducing inflammation, and apoptosis.

Achievement of a stable surface coating with long-term resistance to biofilm formation remains a challenge. Catechol-based polymerization chemistry and surface deposition are used as tools for surface modification of diverse materials. However, the control of surface deposition of the coating, surface coverage, coating properties, and long-term protection against biofilm formation remain to be solved. We report a new approach based on supramolecular assembly to generate long-acting antibiofilm coating. Here, we utilized catechol chemistry in combination with low molecular weight amphiphilic polymers for the generation of such coatings. Screening studies with diverse low molecular weight (LMW) polymers and different catechols are utilized to identify lead compositions, which resulted in a thick coating with high surface coverage, smoothness, and antibiofilm activity. We have identified that small supramolecular assemblies (∼10 nm) formed from a combination of polydopamine and LMW poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) resulted in relatively thick coating (∼300 nm) with excellent surface coverage in comparison to other polymers and catechol combinations. The coating properties, such as thickness (10-300 nm) and surface hydrophilicity (with water contact angle: 20-60°), are readily controlled. The optimal coating composition showed excellent antibiofilm properties with long-term (>28 days) antibiofilm activity against both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) strains. We further utilized the combination of optimal binary coating with silver to generate a coating with sustained release of silver ions, resulting in killing both adhered and planktonic bacteria and preventing long-term surface bacterial colonization. The new coating method utilizing LMW polymers opens a new avenue for the development of a novel class of thick, long-acting antibiofilm coatings.

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines for postpartum thromboprophylaxis differ due its uncertain effect and varying preferences of experts. Women's preferences for postpartum thromboprophylaxis are unknown, although they may inform practices and future research. Our aim was to elicit the pregnant women's preferences for postpartum thromboprophylaxis, according to different risks of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding. METHODS: In two Swiss and French maternity hospitals, we conducted structured interviews of pregnant or postpartum women. Participants were instructed on pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and subcutaneous injections of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH). First, we randomized women to either standard gamble or time trade-off (two different validated methods) to estimate the utilities (quality-of-life, from 0-1) of these health states. Second, we elicited the preference for the use of short-term postpartum thromboprophylaxis with LMWH vs. none across different risks of postpartum VTE and bleeding, through direct-choice exercises. RESULTS: Among 122 participants, median (IQR) health states utilities were 0.725 (0.30-0.925) for PE, 0.75 (0.40-0.97) for PPH, 0.85 (0.60-0.97) for DVT and 0.96 (0.96-0.999) for LMWH injections. The median risk of postpartum VTE to prefer the use of postpartum thromboprophylaxis over no treatment was 0.1% (IQR 0.01-0.50%) without LMWH-associated bleeding risk and 0.2% (IQR 0.1-5%) with a 1% bleeding risk. CONCLUSIONS: European pregnant women appear to have a high willingness for 10-day postpartum thromboprophylaxis, preferred over no treatment even for low risks of postpartum VTE. This perspective from patients supports the urgent need for a randomized trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of postpartum thromboprophylaxis.

Background: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 have shown a significant occurrence of thromboembolism and a heightened risk of death. It remains unclear whether factor Xa inhibitors are superior to enoxaparin in this context. Hence, there is a need for a direct comparison to assess the preventive effects and safety of factor Xa inhibitors versus enoxaparin in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or retrospective studies that compared the effectiveness or safety of factor Xa inhibitors and enoxaparin in preventing thromboembolism in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Embolic incidence, incidence of bleeding, and all-cause mortality were among the outcomes of interest. Mantel-Haenszel weighted random-effects model was used to calculate relative risks (RRs) with 95 percent CIs. Results: The analysis included six RCTs and two retrospective studies containing 4048 patients. Meta-analysis showed a statistically significant reduction among patients on factor Xa inhibitors compared with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) in the embolic incidence [risk ratio (RR) 0.64 (95%, CI 0.42, 0.98); P=0.04, I2=12%]. Upon subgroup analysis by type of study design, no significant reductions were noted in patients on factor Xa inhibitors in RCTs (RR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.33-1.17; P=0.14) or observational studies (RR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.23-1.26; P=0.15) when compared with enoxaparin Factor Xa inhibitors were not significantly associated with incidence of bleeding [RR 0.76 (95% CI 0.36, 1.61); P=0.47, I2=0%] or all-cause mortality (RR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.48-1.36; P=0.43). Consistent results were obtained upon subgroup analysis by the type of study design. Conclusion: Factor Xa inhibitors are more effective than enoxaparin in preventing thromboembolism among patients with COVID-19 who are not acutely ill and are hospitalized. Additional rigorous RCTs comparing factor Xa inhibitors with enoxaparin are warranted.

Subcutaneous injection of unfractionated heparin (UH) or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is frequently utilized for venous thromboembolism chemoprophylaxis. We previously discovered that nurses believe patients experience more pain with UH compared to the LMWH enoxaparin; however, no published studies that are appropriately powered exist comparing pain associated with subcutaneous chemoprophylaxis. Our objective was to assess if differences exist in pain associated with subcutaneous administration of UH and enoxaparin. We conducted an observational study of patients who underwent major abdominal surgery between 11/2017-4/2019. All patients received one of three prophylactic regimens: (1) UH only, (2) Initial dose of UH followed by enoxaparin, or (3) enoxaparin only. Of the 74 patients observed, 40 patients received UH followed by enoxaparin, 17 received UH only, and 17 received enoxaparin only. There was a significant difference in patients' mean perceived pain between subcutaneous UH and enoxaparin injections (mean post-injection pain after UH 3.3 vs. enoxaparin 1.5; p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in perceived pain for patients who received consecutive UH or enoxaparin injections. Differences in pain associated with different chemoprophylaxis agents may be an unrecognized driver of patient refusals of VTE chemoprophylaxis and may lead to worse VTE outcomes.

Neonatal aortic thrombosis, though rare, is associated with high mortality and is frequently linked to umbilical vessel catheterization, especially in smaller and critically ill infants due to their low levels of natural anticoagulants and increased prothrombotic activity. We report a case of a term neonate with abdominal aortic thrombosis and severe lower limb ischemia, presenting with respiratory distress requiring intubation and subsequent development of thrombosis by day 7. Initial anticoagulation with heparin proved insufficient, necessitating the use of reteplase and intra-arterial thrombolysis, which resulted in clinical improvement despite limited immediate success in Doppler studies. The patient was discharged on low-molecular-weight heparin against medical advice, highlighting the complexities and need for individualized management strategies in neonatal thromboembolism.

The microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers into nanostructured films is strongly dependent on the surface fields. Both, the chain mobility and the effective interaction parameters can lead to deviations from the bulk morphologies in the structures adjacent to the substrate. Resolving frustrated morphologies with domain period L0 above 100 nm is an experimental challenge. Here, solvothermal annealing was used to assess the contribution of elevated temperatures of the vapor Tv and of the substrate Ts on the evolution of the microphase-separated structures in thin films symmetric of polystyrene-b-poly(2vinylpyridine) block copolymer (PS-PVP) with L0 about 120 nm. Pronounced topographic mesh-like and stripe patterns develop on a time scale of min and are attributed to the perforated lamella (PL) and up-standing lamella phases. By setting Tv/Ts combinations it is possible to tune the sizes of the resulting PL patterns by almost 10%. Resolving chemical periodicity using selective metallization of the structures revealed multiplication of the topographic stripes, i.e., complex segregation of the component within the topographic pattern, presumably as a result of morphological phase transition from initial non-equilibrium spherical morphology. Reported results reveal approaches to tune the topographical and chemical periodicity of microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers under strong confinement, which is essential for exploiting these structures as functional templates.

Near-infrared region (NIR; 650-1700 nm) dyes offer many advantages over traditional dyes with absorption and emission in the visible region. However, developing new NIR dyes, especially organic dyes with long wavelengths, small molecular weight, and excellent stability and biocompatibility, is still quite challenging. Herein, we present a general method to enhance the absorption and emission wavelengths of traditional fluorophores by simply appending a charge separation structure, dihydropyridopyrazine. These novel NIR dyes not only exhibited greatly redshifted wavelengths compared to their parent dyes, but also displayed a small molecular weight increase together with retained stability and biocompatibility. Specifically, dye NIR-OX, a dihydropyridopyra-zine derivative of oxazine with a molecular mass of 386.2 Da, exhibited an absorption at 822 nm and an emission extending to 1200 nm, making it one of the smallest molecular-weight NIR-II emitting dyes. Thanks to its rapid metabolism and long wave-length, NIR-OX enabled high-contrast bioimaging and assessment of cholestatic liver injury in vivo and also facilitated the evalua-tion of the efficacy of liver protection medicines against cholestatic liver injury.

Pollen, in addition to allergens, comprise low molecular weight components (LMC) smaller than 3 kDa. Emerging evidence indicates the relevance of LMC in allergic immune responses. However, the interaction of birch pollen (BP)-derived LMC and epithelial cells has not been extensively studied. We investigated epithelial barrier modifications induced by exposure to BP LMC, using the human bronchial epithelial cell line 16HBE14o-. Epithelial cell monolayers were apically exposed to the major BP allergen Bet v 1, aqueous BP extract or BP-derived LMC. Barrier integrity after the treatments was monitored by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance at regular intervals and by using the xCELLigence Real-Time Cell Analysis system. The polarized release of cytokines 24 h following treatment was measured using a multiplex immunoassay. Epithelial barrier integrity was significantly enhanced upon exposure to BP LMC. Moreover, BP LMC induced the repair of papain-mediated epithelial barrier damage. The apical release of CCL5 and TNF-α was significantly reduced after exposure to BP LMC, while the basolateral release of IL-6 significantly increased. In conclusion, the results of our study demonstrate that BP-derived LMC modify the physical and immunological properties of bronchial epithelial cells and thus regulate airway epithelial barrier responses.

Understanding the formation of ice crystals is essential for tailoring the microstructure and physical properties of cryogels. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of pectin molecular weight (Mw) on impacting ice crystal formation. Pectin fractions various Mw (10.13-212.20 kDa) were prepared by hydrothermal method. The solution of high Mw pectin fractions exhibited higher contact angle, lower water freedom, and stronger adsorption of water molecules. The splat experiment and molecular dynamic (MD) results confirmed that higher Mw pectin have stronger ice crystal growth inhibition activity than lower Mw pectin. Furthermore, the pore size distribution of the cryogel increased from 98-203 µm to 105-267 µm as the molecular weight decreased from 212.2 kDa to 121.0 kDa. Additionally, in the higher Mw pectin cryogel, stronger mechanical strength was observed. These findings suggested that changing the molecular weight of pectin has the potential to regulate the ice crystal growth, microstructure and physical properties of frozen products.

Bupleurum chinense polysaccharide has a wide range of biological activities. In this study, Bupleurum chinense polysaccharides (BPs), BPs-1 (30 kDa) and BPs-2 (2000 kDa) with different molecular weights were isolated and prepared by ultrafiltration interception method. The structures of BPs, BPs-1 and BPs-2 were characterised by monosaccharide composition, GC-MS, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The results showed that the monosaccharide composition of BPs with different molecular weights was the same, but the proportion was different. BPs, BPs-1 and BPs-2 were mainly connected by Glup-(1→,→2,4)-Araf-(1→,→6)-Glup-(1→). The anti-inflammatory activity screening experiment in vitro showed that BPs-1 had stronger anti-inflammatory effect. Antioxidant experiments showed that BPs-2 had high free radical scavenging activity. This study laid a foundation for elucidating the fine structure and structure-activity relationship of Bupleurum chinense polysaccharides and will promote the product development of Bupleurum chinense polysaccharides.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a very frequent cardiovascular entity that encompasses deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE). This last entity represents a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The incidence of PE and the rate of PE-related morbidity significantly increase with age, race, and underlying medical conditions, such as malignancy. Given the recent advances in diagnostic strategies and algorithms, patients can be risk assessed and treated promptly to avoid disease progression. Anticoagulation is the mainstay of treatment for acute PE that is not hemodynamically unstable. Direct oral anticoagulants, such as apixaban, rivaroxaban, or edoxaban, are currently the preferred agents for the treatment of patients who present with acute PE or for long-term treatment. Treatment duration should be continued for at least 3 months, and all patients should be assessed for extended duration of therapy based on the precipitating factors that led to the development of the VTE. Novel anticoagulant agents targeting factor XI/XIa are currently being investigated in phases 2 and 3 clinical trials, representing an attractive option in anticoagulation therapies in patients with VTE. For hemodynamically unstable patients, systemic thrombolysis is the treatment of choice, and it may also be of benefit-in reduced dose-for patients with intermediate to high risk who are at risk of hemodynamic collapse.

Enzymatic hydrolysis prior to protein fibrillation was an effective way to facilitate the formation of nanofibrils. This study aimed to investigate the effects of molecular weights of hydrolysate on the kinetics, structures, and interactions of soy protein isolate (SPI) hydrolysate nanofibrils. The results showed that hydrolysate with molecular weight > 10 kDa showed a distinct fibrillation kinetics curve and a higher apparent rate constant (27.72) during fibrillation, indicating their vital role in determining the fibrillation. Hydrolysate with molecular weight > 10 kDa could form nanofibrils with higher radius gyration (17.11 ± 0.77 Å) due to stronger hydrophobic interaction, showing a stronger fibrillation ability. Hydrolysate with molecular weight within 5-10 kDa exhibited enhanced π-π stacking interactions during fibrillation, thereby promoting the extension of nanofibrils, and contributing to the formation of more nanofibrils. Hydrolysate with molecular weight < 5 kDa tended to randomly aggregate during fibrillation, resulting in a significant loss of cross-ß structures in nanofibrils. Therefore, hydrolysate with different molecular weights exhibited synergistic effects during fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of rivaroxaban compared to enoxaparin in patients diagnosed with cancer and venous thromboembolism. METHODS: A search of Pub Med, Scopus, and Google Scholar, from inception through April 2023 was conducted. Articles comparing rivaroxaban with enoxaparin in patients with cancer and VTE/PE/DVT were included. Review Manager Version 5.2 was utilised for the analysis of the following outcomes; VTE, PE, DVT, major bleeding, and mortality. RESULTS: A total of 8 articles and 2276 patients were included in the final analysis. Pooled analysis showed that rivaroxaban had a statistically insignificant reduced association with VTE occurrence (RR:0.83, 95% CI:0.58-1.18, P:0.3) as well as a statically insignificant reduction in major bleeding (RR:0.79, 95% CI:0.53-1.18, P:0.25). Analysis showcased that there was an insignificant reduction of mortality rivaroxaban as compared to enoxaparin (RR:0.74, 95% CI: 0.46-1.20, P:0.23). CONCLUSION: Rivaroxaban can serve as a viable alternative to enoxaparin, with no appreciable drawbacks, for preventing and managing VTE in patients with malignancy.
