RESUMO

This article analyses the transformation of information security induced by the Jericho Forum, a group of security professionals who argued for a new 'de-perimeterised' security model. Having focused on defensive perimeters around networks, early 2000s information security faced a growing set of pressures: the maintainability of firewalls given increasing traffic volume and variety, the vulnerability of interior network domains, and the need to cope with and enable new working arrangements and ways of doing business. De-perimeterisation was a radical rethinking of the nature of security and created the conditions for the rise of 'Zero Trust' architectures. This shift has radical implications for the architectures of digital infrastructures that undergird many aspects of contemporary life, the risks to which people and societies are exposed, and the nature of work and business in a digital economy. We develop a semiotic analysis of the Jericho Forum's interventions. Using insights from material semiotics, security theory and the theory of narrativity, we argue that de-perimeterisation can be understood as a shift in security logic, or, a shift in how security can (be made to) make sense. We examine a cluster of images used by the Jericho Forum, and analyse how they challenged the coherence of perimeter-based thinking and provided the materials for constructing a new model. We argue that a focus on the narrative dimension of security provides a window into fundamental semantic transformations, reciprocal historical relations between semantics and technical change, the agencement of security technologies, and determinations of value (what is worth securing).

RESUMO

Introduction: The focus of cognitive and psychological approaches to narrative has not so much been on the elucidation of important aspects of narrative, but rather on using narratives as tools for the investigation of higher order cognitive processes elicited by narratives (e.g., understanding, empathy, etc.). In this study, we work toward a scalar model of narrativity, which can provide testable criteria for selecting and classifying communication forms in their level of narrativity. We investigated whether being exposed to videos with different levels of narrativity modulates shared neural responses, measured by inter-subject correlation, and engagement levels. Methods: Thirty-two participants watched video advertisements with high-level and low-level of narrativity while their neural responses were measured through electroencephalogram. Additionally, participants' engagement levels were calculated based on the composite of their self-reported attention and immersion scores. Results: Results demonstrated that both calculated inter-subject correlation and engagement scores for high-level video ads were significantly higher than those for low-level, suggesting that narrativity levels modulate inter-subject correlation and engagement. Discussion: We believe that these findings are a step toward the elucidation of the viewers' way of processing and understanding a given communication artifact as a function of the narrative qualities expressed by the level of narrativity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A theological perspective on dealing with crises that focuses on modes of endurance and gestalt, is supported by interdisciplinary resilience research. OBJECTIVE: How can silence contribute to a productive coping with crises and pain? MATERIAL AND METHODS: Texts and practices of the Christian tradition are discussed with respect to their ways of dealing with critical and painful situations, namely a) the Psalm texts of the Old Testament, which are examined by means of exegetical methods for historical and cultural aspects of meaning and b) the practice of silence in the prayers of the Taizé community, which are examined from a narrative hermeneutical perspective. RESULTS: By understanding silence as an ambiguous and ambivalent phenomenon, it can contribute to a productive way of dealing with pain that enables perception, confrontation and acceptance. It is crucial not to regard the silence of a sufferer as a mere endurance, but also to have an eye on the creative potentials. Cultural and religious narratives and practices can help to locate oneself in a "space of silence" in such a way that a resilient way of dealing with experiences of pain becomes possible. CONCLUSION: In order for silence to promote resilience, it is necessary to keep an eye on productive as well as destructive processes of silence as an ambivalent phenomenon: These processes occur in an uncontrollable way and are shaped by implicit normative assumptions. Silence can be experienced as loneliness, isolation and the loss of quality of life, or silence can become a place of encounter, of arrival, of security, and in prayer of trust in God.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Unaccompanied refugee minors-or unaccompanied minors-are children and adolescents who have been separated from parents and other relatives and are not being cared for by an adult. Unaccompanied minors are a vulnerable population, with numerous stressors and complex psychiatric symptoms necessitating specialized mental health care. This study explores patients' experiences of a Multimodal Co-Therapy for Unaccompanied Minors (MUCTUM), which encompasses cultural, biological, narrative & institutional approaches to care. METHODS: MUCTUM is a co-therapy program for unaccompanied minors, with a psychiatrist, psychologist, native-language interpreter, and caseworker for each patient. In this qualitative study, we interviewed adolescents about their experiences with MUCTUM and analyzed these semi-structured interviews using a phenomenological framework (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). RESULTS: Qualitative analysis of 16 interviews discovered that unaccompanied minors felt misunderstood before participating in MUCTUM, describing a sense of strangeness and loneliness in relation to psychiatric symptoms. Several youths experienced triple stigmatization: of being unaccompanied minors, of suffering from psychotrauma, and of being mental health patients. We further describe three overarching domains that inform on MUCTUM support to unaccompanied minors: (1) A safe space for unaccompanied minors; (2) Helpful interventions during therapy; and (3) Narrating one's story can "set us free" if guided carefully by care providers. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that MUCTUM therapy may efficiently support unaccompanied minors' mental health by acknowledging their hierarchy of needs. Psychotherapeutic strategies include creating a safe place, providing culturally appropriate care and patient-centered therapy, addressing concrete problems, supporting relationships, and making use of limited reparenting in therapy. Delayed and progressive inquiry about traumatic events may be beneficial. Replication of these findings and their field application is warranted.

RESUMO

For two years Damien took part in the sibling group at the medico-social action centre in Ivry-sur-Seine where his sister is cared for. A look back at the boy's development through the presentation of some of his drawings and the stories he has told about them. It seems to us essential to welcome the effects of the psychological shock of the families, induced by the handicap, and for this reason the siblings' group offers itself as a support to the narrative processes.

RESUMO

During the last three decades there has been a wave of interest in narrative and narrativity in the humanistic and the social sciences. This "narrative turn" has spilled over to medicine, where narrative medicine has gained a considerable influence. However, there have also appeared second thoughts on the role of narratives in our lives, as well as on what narratives may mean in relation to clinical medicine. This article presents some influential voices in this debate and scrutinizes the assumptions of narrative medicine in the light of these. It is concluded that there are sound reasons to tread this path with some caution and avoid the too far reaching ambitions on behalf of narrativity in relation to clinical medicine. However, narrative medicine should still be seen as a promising attempt within the broader scope of medical humanities to emphasize the importance of human subjectivity in clinical medicine.

(AU)

This paper proposes a reflection upon children’s drawings through psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which serves as an intermediary language, a figurative narrative. It begins with a brief introduction to the drawing in psychoanalysis, followed by the work of the analytic pair through the act of drawing in the session, and finally presents several clinical illustrations serving as psychic cartographies that map the three concomitant levels of analytic dialogue: the historical level of reality; the phantasmatic level of object relations which is established; and finally, the transference-countertransference movements of the co-constructed analytic relationship, like a dream-for-two. The analyst should foster the co-creation of an intersubjective and intermediate space of reverie: by reflecting the emotion that the child’s drawing elicits, one drawing follows another, giving rise to a living, elaborative narrative.

Abstract Introduction: Narrative pedagogy is presented as a dynamic vision to achieve recognition and identification produced by the appearance of transgression, criticism, mutation and political effects. The narrative becomes work to be appropriate for the subjects thus activating their meaning and value. Objective: To propose a theoretical framework from the educational philosophy called the pedagogy of "we" as a space of construction / deconstruction / reconstruction / dissolution. A decolonized epistemology with a gender approach. Materials and methods: This is a research with documental, analytical and explanatory characteristics, based on post-structuralist feminism and critical theory. It makes use of secondary sources. Results: The conceptualization of the category of identity as a narrative deepens the idea of incorporating the sense of being, clearly introducing the agency. Conclusion: The pedagogy of "we" as a space of construction / deconstruction / reconstruction / dissolution of our identities, without pretending to achieve a truth or a totalizing vision, clarifies divergences and agreements to build possible points of convergence based on care and equality. Likewise, it tries to develop a gnoseological option based on the narrative as a pedagogical strategy because, apart from being a form of knowledge that brings together all the pedagogies, it is a way in which educators and learners can interpret their experiences from different perspectives, including the conventional, critical, feminist, postmodern and phenomenological.

Mediation through writing is a valuable tool to be used as a means of symbolisation in the period of psychological and physical tensions common to adolescence. By creating their own space in which to create, the evolving written account enables young people to think about their psychological life by considering the place of each individual. Each clue in the writing is to be understood in relation to the way the adolescent functions psychologically.

RESUMO

On social media, users can easily share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences with the public, including people who they have no previous interaction with. Such information, though often embedded in a stream of others' news, may influence recipients' perception toward the discloser. We used a special design that enables a quasi-experience of SNS browsing, and examined if browsing other's posts in a news stream can create a feeling of familiarity and (even) closeness toward the discloser. In addition, disclosure messages can vary in the degree of intimacy (from superficial to intimate) and narrativity (from a random blather to a story-like narrative). The roles of disclosure intimacy and narrativity on perceived closeness and social attraction were examined by a 2 × 2 experimental design. By conducting one lab study and another online replication, we consistently found that disclosure frequency, when perceived as appropriate, predicted familiarity and closeness. The effects of disclosure intimacy and narrativity were not stable. Further exploratory analyses showed that the roles of disclosure intimacy on closeness and social attraction were constrained by the perceived appropriateness, and the effects of narrativity on closeness and social attraction were mediated by perceived entertainment value.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We ask which are the clinically relevant qualities of narratives in psychotherapy and how they can be measured. METHOD: On the background of psychoanalytic assumptions and narrative theory, we propose to measure formal narrative processes which stay close to the linguistic surface, because these escape conscious control. RESULTS: We propose five aspects of narratives to be especially sensitive to distortions and therefore prone to change in successful therapies: (1) The actual chronological, stepwise narrating of events, (2) the intentional structuring of events, or emplotment, (3) the immediate evaluation, (4) the reflected interpretation of events, and finally (5) the consistency and completeness of the narrative. For each aspect we discuss ways to measure them. Finally the aspects are illustrated with excerpts from a series of diagnostic interviews. DISCUSSION: Implications for the analysis of the co-narrative role of the therapist are suggested.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to test the usability of selected narrativity indices identified from autobiographical accounts of important relationships in an assessment of neurotic (NPO) and borderline personality organization (BPO). METHODS: Narrativity indices, both particular and generalized, were used to predict personality organization levels. Indices were derived from two separate layers of analysis: 1) lexical indices were counted with computer assistance; 2) evocative/reception indices dealing with coherence of the story were assessed using the competent judges method. RESULTS: It was found that the lexical narrativity index-the active "I"-was a good predictor of both BPO and NPO, while the human factor was a good predictor of BPO when low. Moreover, a generalized index was used to describe how stories are saturated with the narrativity indices of intentionality, concreteness, and active "I", but simultaneously deprived of human factor, and was found to be the best predictor of BPO. Furthermore, where the coherence of the story and of its subdimension (integration) rise, the probability of BPO diagnosis decreases. CONCLUSIONS: This research provides support for the thesis that surface narrativity indices may predict deeper personality structure. Its results are justified in the light of Kernberg's theory, and have the potential to become a useful tool in clinical practice as a supplementary source of information in diagnostic and psychotherapeutic processes.

RESUMO

Prisoners of the Nazi concentration camps explained that the necessity to count all that horror stayed with them in life. In this moment, they were founding an "ethics of the testimony", that is to say, the salvation of the victims by means of their memory. Indeed Ricoeur shows that "time becomes human time in the measurement in which it is articulated in a narrative way". In this sense, he points out that narrative plots constitute "the privileged means by which we form our confused, shapeless and, at limit, dumb, temporary experience". In spite of that, experience not always reaches to being object of a story. Sometimes, the traumatic experience prevents the individual from taking control of his/her personal history. There is a strong temptation to deny that this experience has taken place, or it is lived as if it happened to another person. In those "dark nights" of the soul, in those moments of extreme dispossession, «the question of "who am I" does not refer to the nullity, but it refers to the same nudity of the question¼ (Ricoeur). For that reason, so that it is not an unbearable sequence of events, we narrated a story and we looked for its meaning. We do not do it to forgive or to forget, but to obtain "the privilege to judge". If the oblivion leads to a break from tradition, the truth however is not "a discovery that destroys the secret, but the disclosure that makes justice to it and allows to be passed on to the future generations" (Arendt).

This analysis relied on empirical evidence provided by the application of the PPR to 17 participants between 19 and 34 years old (11 women). Results suggested two different contexts for the phenomenon of dialogicality: the possibility for a person to perceive her or himself as a multiplicity of characters, and to construct narratives about her or himself from different points-of-view. These results indicate that the PPR is able to demonstrate the basic spatial structure of the dialogicality but not the dialogicality in action, that is an outcome of the self's narrative nature. To conclude, some limitations and possibilities for the PPR are discussed.

RESUMO

From a naturalistic perspective on mental illness, depression is often described in terms of biological dysfunctions, while a normative perspective emphasizes the lived experience of depression as a harmful condition. The paper relates a conceptual analysis of "depressive situation" to an analysis of the lived experience of depression. As such, it predominantly aims to specify depression as a harmful condition in lights of normative perspective on mental disorder, but partially refers to empirical research, i.e., naturalistic perspective on depression, to exemplarily stress on the methodological merits and limits of relating phenomenological considerations closer to empirical research. The depressive situation is further specified with an examination of the evaluative dynamics by which individuals meaningfully relate to themselves, others and the world. These evaluative dynamics emerge out of the interplay of pre-reflective and reflective processes, which are significantly altered in depression. Such alterations of the evaluative structure are inextricably intertwined with significant distortions of practical sense in depression. From a phenomenological perspective, these distortions of practical sense show in characteristic experiences of evaluative incoherence and impairments of agency. Finally, this paper focuses on an examination of "evaluative incapacity," which has the integrative potential to capture a range of typical changes of meaningful relatedness that determine the depressive situation.

The article discusses the suffering prisoners of a judiciary asylum, and a simulacrum of that, respectively: Hospital de Custódia e Tratamento Psiquiátrico in Pará and Unidade Experimental de Saúde in São Paulo. Presents two types of security mechanisms that drive circuits of exchange between biological norm and juridic norm in order to ensure the construction of dangerous individual and maintenance of devices of exclusion and violence. Punctuating the logic that crosses in dialogue with the state criminal and biopolitics, we highlight the suffering of the inmates as one of the effects of this logic, searching echoing the intolerable and activate struggles that prevent the expansion of the criminal network. Pointed out, finally, some clues for an ethical-political action in this area, pointing out the conditions of enunciation that suffering in a policy narrative.(AU)
