Bacterial communities in animals are often necessary for hosts to survive, particularly for hosts with nutrient-limited diets. The composition, abundance, and richness of these bacterial communities may be shaped by host identity and external ecological factors. The turtle ants (genus Cephalotes) are predominantly herbivorous and known to rely on bacterial communities to enrich their diet. Cephalotes have a broad Neotropical distribution, with high diversity in the South American Cerrado, a geologically and biologically diverse savanna. Using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we examined the bacterial communities of forty-one Cephalotes samples of sixteen different species collected from multiple locations across two sites in the Cerrado (MG, Brazil) and compared the bacterial communities according to elevation, locality, species, and species group, defined by host phylogeny. Beta diversity of bacterial communities differed with respect to all categories but particularly strongly when compared by geographic location, species, and species group. Differences seen in species and species groups can be partially explained by the high abundance of Mesorhizobium in Cephalotes pusillus and Cephalotes depressus species groups, when compared to other clades via the Analysis of Composition of Microbiome (ANCOM). Though the Cephalotes bacterial community is highly conserved, results from this study indicate that multiple external factors can affect and change bacterial community composition and abundance.

Frost effects on savanna plant communities have been considered as analogous to those from fire, both changing community structure and filtering species composition. However, while frost impacts have been well-studied for the woody component of savannas, it is still poorly explored for the ground-layer community. Here, we investigated effects of frost in the Cerrado along a gradient of tree cover, focusing on ground-layer plant species, near the southern limit of the Cerrado in Brazil. We aimed to elucidate if the pattern already described for the tree layer also extends to the ground layer in terms of mimicking the effects of fire on vegetation structure and composition. We assessed how damage severity differs across species and across the tree-cover gradient, and we examined the recovery process after frost in terms of richness and community structure along the canopy cover gradient. Frost caused immediate and widespread dieback of the perennial ground-layer, with greatest impact on community structure where tree cover was lowest. However, frost did not reduce the number of species, indicating community resilience to this natural disturbance. Although frost mimicked the effects of fire in some ways, in other ways it differed substantially from fire. Unlike fire, frost increases litter cover and decreases the proportion of bare soil, likely hindering crucial processes for recovery of plant populations, such as seed dispersal, seed germination and plant resprouting. This finding calls attention to the risk of misguided conclusions when the ground layer is neglected in ecological studies of tropical savannas and grasslands.

Fire is an evolutionary environmental filter in tropical savanna ecosystems altering functional diversity and associated C pools in the biosphere and fluxes between the atmosphere and biosphere. Therefore, alterations in fire regimes (e.g. fire exclusion) will strongly influence ecosystem processes and associated dynamics. In those ecosystems C dynamics and functions are underestimated by the fire-induced offset between C output and input. To determine how fire shapes ecosystem C pools and fluxes in an open savanna across recently burned and fire excluded areas, we measured the following metrics: (I) plant diversity including taxonomic (i.e. richness, evenness) and plant functional diversity (i.e. functional diversity, functional richness, functional dispersion and community weighted means); (II) structure (i.e. above- and below-ground biomass, litter accumulation); and (III) functions related to C balance (i.e. net ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange (NEE), ecosystem transpiration (ET), soil respiration (soil CO2 efflux), ecosystem water use efficiency (eWUE) and total soil organic C (SOC). We found that fire promoted aboveground live and belowground biomass, including belowground organs, coarse and fine root biomass and contributed to higher biomass allocation belowground. Fire also increased both functional diversity and dispersion. NEE and total SOC were higher in burned plots compared to fire-excluded plots whereas soil respiration recorded lower values in burned areas. Both ET and eWUE were not affected by fire. Fire strongly favored functional diversity, fine root and belowground organ biomass in piecewise SEM models but the role of both functional diversity and ecosystem structure to mediate the effect of fire on ecosystem functions remain unclear. Fire regime will impact C balance, and fire exclusion may lead to lower C input in open savanna ecosystems.

Mechanisms promoting stable coexistence allow multiple species to persist in the same trophic level of a given network of species interactions. One of the most common stabilizing mechanisms of coexistence is niche differentiation, such as temporal and spatial patchiness. To understand the limits of coexistence between species we have to understand the limits of competitive interactions which translate in species exclusion or patterns of non-co-occurrence. We evaluated spatiotemporal niche-based mechanisms that could promote stable coexistence between ants and spiders which forage on extrafloral nectary (EFN)-bearing plants. We observed co-occurrence and overlapping patterns between ants and spiders in a temporal and spatial scale in nine different EFN-bearing plant species in a Neotropical savanna, using both community and species-level approach. Ants and spiders showed asynchrony of their abundances over the year with low temporal overlapping patterns between them (temporal niche specialization). Greater abundance of ants occurred between September and March, whereas greater abundance of spiders occurred between March and August, exactly at the time when the abundance of ants decreases on plants. However, there might also be some levels of temporal overlapping, but then individual ants and spiders occupy different branches (spatial segregation). Finally, we also observed a spatial negative effect of the abundance of ants on the presence of spiders. Our results suggest that spatiotemporal partitioning between ants and spiders may be one of the potential mechanisms behind a stable coexistence between these two groups of organisms that forage on EFN-bearing plants in the Brazilian savanna.

Open grassy vegetation and forests share riparian zones across the Neotropical savannas, characterizing alternative stable states. However, factors determining the occurrence and maintenance of each vegetation type are yet to be elucidated. To disentangle the role of environmental factors (soil properties and groundwater depth) constraining tree colonization of wet grasslands in the Cerrado, we assessed tree establishment during the early seedling and sapling stages and the influence of these factors on leaf gas exchange and leaf water potential of tree saplings. Three functionally distinct tree species were studied: (1) flood-tolerant species characteristic of gallery forests, (2) flood-intolerant species characteristic of seasonally dry savannas, and (3) generalist species found in both gallery forests and seasonally dry savannas. Savanna species was constrained by waterlogging, especially at the sapling stage, with restricted stomatal conductance and leaf water potential, resulting in low carbon assimilation, decreased plant size, and high mortality (above 80%). The gallery forest and the generalist species, however, were able to colonize the wet grasslands and survive, despite the low seedling emergence (below 30%) and sapling growth constrained by low gas exchange rates. Soil waterlogging is, therefore, an effective environmental filter that prevents savanna trees from expanding over wet grasslands. However, colonization by trees adapted to a shallow water table cannot be constrained by this or other soil properties, turning the wet grasslands dependent on natural disturbances to persist as an alternative state, sharing the waterlogged environments with the gallery forests in the Cerrado region.

Abstract: Unusual movements of an animal can potentially represent a dispersal event. A higher frequency of young males dispersing is a pattern observed for most part of polygynous or promiscuous mammals with these dispersion events occurring, mainly, before or at the beginning of the breeding season. The water opossum (Chironectes minimus), the only marsupial adapted for semi-aquatic life, occurs from Mexico to Argentina and it has been mostly described as a sensitive species to river and riparian vegetation degradation, occurring exclusively near water curses. Here we describe the first record of long-distance movement of a water opossum not associated with riverine vegetation through dry land. We captured a healthy adult male of C. minimus in July 2012 beside of a highway (DF-001) located 1,100 m from nearest gallery forest in the Federal District. The region is characterized by urban and suburban residential, small fragments of typical savanna and degraded gallery forests. Our unique record could be an event of dispersion through degraded dry lands as observed for other semi-aquatic mammals and also suggests that this species is more resistant to anthropogenic disturbances than previously described. Also, information about dispersal patterns of water opossum is scarce and may contributes to a deeper understanding of ecological requirements of this species.


Resumo: Deslocamentos incomuns realizados por um animal podem representar potencialmente um evento de dispersão. Grande parte dos mamíferos poligínicos ou promíscuos, apresentam uma maior frequência de machos jovens dispersando, e esses eventos ocorrem, principalmente, antes ou no início da estação reprodutiva. A cuíca d'água (Chironectes minimus), único marsupial adaptado à vida semiaquática, ocorre do México à Argentina. Tem sido descrito principalmente como uma espécie sensível à degradação de cursos d'água e matas ciliares, ocorrendo exclusivamente próximo aos cursos d'água. Desta forma, descrevemos aqui o primeiro registro do deslocamento de longa distância de uma cuíca d'água não associado à vegetação ribeirinha através de um ambiente seco. Capturamos um macho adulto saudável de C. minimus em julho de 2012 à margem de uma rodovia (DF-001) localizada a 1.100 m da mata de galeria mais próxima no Distrito Federal. A região é caracterizada por residências urbanas e suburbanas, pequenos fragmentos de cerrado sentido restrito e matas de galeria degradadas. Nosso registro singular pode ser um evento de dispersão através de ambientes secos antropizados, conforme observado para outros mamíferos semiaquáticos, o que, também, sugere que esta espécie é mais resistente a distúrbios antropogênicos do que descrito anteriormente. Além disso, as informações sobre os padrões de dispersão da cuíca d'água são escassas e podem contribuir para um entendimento mais profundo dos requisitos ecológicos desta espécie.

Abstract: The development of strategies that conciliate anthropogenic activities with nature conservation is becoming increasingly urgent, particularly in regions facing rapid conversion of native vegetation to agriculture. Conceptual modelling enables assessment of how anthropogenic drivers (e.g. land use/land cover change and climate change) modify natural processes, being a useful tool to support strategic decision-making. The present work describes a conceptual model to evaluate water-related ecosystem service provision under different land use scenarios in the Matopiba region of the Brazilian Cerrado, the world's most biodiverse savanna and an agricultural frontier. Model variables were determined (direct drivers, indirect drivers, focal components and responses) and the Nature Futures Framework was consulted to incorporate socio-ecological components and feedbacks. Future scenarios were developed considering potential trajectories of drivers and governance responses that may impact land use in the region, including the possibility of full compliance with Forest Code and implementation of the Soy Moratorium in the region. The conceptual model and scenarios developed in the present study may be useful to improve understanding of the complex interactions among anthropogenic drivers, water-related ecosystem services and their potential repercussions for natural and social systems of the region. Governance decisions will be critical to maintaining the ecosystems of the region, the services it provides and the culture and tradition of the people historically embedded in the landscape. In acknowledgment of humanity's dependence on nature, the importance of inverting the way scenarios are used is highlighted. Rather than using scenarios to measure the impacts of different policy options on nature, scenarios representing the desired outcomes for biodiversity and ecosystem services can be used to inform how policies can guarantee ecosystem integrity into the future.


Resumo: O desenvolvimento de estratégias que conciliem atividades antropogênicas com a conservação da natureza tem se tornado cada vez mais urgente, principalmente em regiões que enfrentam uma rápida conversão da vegetação nativa em agricultura. Modelos conceituais permitem avaliar como fatores antropogênicos (por exemplo, mudança de uso e cobertura do solo e mudanças climáticas) modificam os processos naturais, sendo uma ferramenta útil para apoiar a tomada de decisões estratégicas. O presente trabalho descreve um modelo conceitual para avaliar a provisão de serviços ecossistêmicos relacionados à água sob diferentes cenários de uso do solo na região de Matopiba, no Cerrado, a savana com maior biodiversidade do mundo e uma fronteira agrícola. Foram determinadas as variáveis do modelo (fatores diretos, fatores indiretos, componentes focais e respostas) e o Nature Futures Framework foi consultado para incorporar componentes socioeconômicos e feedbacks. Cenários futuros foram desenvolvidos considerando possíveis trajetórias de fatores antropogênicos e respostas de governança que podem impactar o uso do solo na região, incluindo a possibilidade de cumprimento total do Código Florestal e a implementação da Moratória da Soja na região. O modelo conceitual e os cenários apresentados no presente trabalho podem ser úteis para melhorar a compreensão das complexas interações entre fatores antropogênicos, serviços ecossistêmicos relacionados à água e suas possíveis implicações para os sistemas naturais e sociais da região. Decisões de governança serão críticas para manter os ecossistemas da região, os serviços fornecidos por eles, a cultura e tradição das pessoas historicamente inseridas na paisagem. Em reconhecimento da dependência da humanidade em relação à natureza, destaca-se a importância de inverter a maneira como os cenários são usualmente usados. Em vez de mensurar os impactos de diferentes políticas na natureza, cenários representando os resultados desejados para biodiversidade e serviços ecossistêmicos podem ser usados para informar como políticas podem garantir a integridade dos ecossistemas no futuro.

The use of fire by cattle ranchers is a major source of conflict between conservationists and local communities in tropical savannas. We evaluate the role of traditional pastoral management in wildfire prevention in two protected areas within the Brazilian savanna. Fine-grain field data from transect walks and interviews were combined with geospatial data at landscape scale to compare fire regimes in community-managed areas with those in government-managed areas. Local pastoral management creates seasonal mosaic patterns of burnings performed for productive activities and for deliberate landscape management, i.e. to protect fire-sensitive vegetation and avoid wildfires. Whereas government-managed areas were affected by large biennial late dry season wildfires, community-managed areas with a regular fire regime suffered less damage. These systems are under threat and poorly understood by researchers and environmental managers. In order to improve fire management in tropical savannas, greater understanding of pastoral management practices and their spatiotemporal dimensions is required.

Trade-offs between plant growth and defense are central to theoretical frameworks used to study the ecology and evolution of plant defense against herbivores. However, these frameworks, as well as the experiments designed to test them, rarely include belowground herbivores. We experimentally challenged seedlings of the tropical shrub Solanum lycocarpum (Solanaceae) with either aboveground foliar herbivores (Spodoptera caterpillars) or belowground root herbivores (the nematode Meloidogyne incognita) and measured the resulting changes in plant growth rates, biomass allocation, and the concentration of defensive terpenoids in roots and leaves. We found that plants that suffered aboveground herbivory responded with aboveground growth but belowground defense. Similarly, belowground herbivory resulted in root growth but elevated defenses of leaves. These results underscore the importance of belowground plant-herbivore interactions, and suggest that, in contrast to theoretical predictions, plants can simultaneously invest in both growth and defense. Finally, they emphasize the need for a "whole-plant" perspective in theoretical and empirical evaluations of plant-herbivore interactions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The relative role of Pleistocene climate changes in driving the geographic distribution and genetic diversity of South American species is not well known, especially from open biomes such as the Cerrado, the most diverse tropical savanna, encompassing high levels of endemism. Here the effects of Quaternary climatic changes on demographic history, distribution dynamics and genetic diversity of Dimorphandra mollis, an endemic tree species widely distributed in the Cerrado, were investigated. METHODS: A total of 38 populations covering most of the distribution of D. mollis were analysed using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and nuclear microsatellite variation [simple sequence repeats (SSRs)]. The framework incorporated statistical phylogeography, coalescent analyses and ecological niche modelling (ENM). KEY RESULTS: Different signatures of Quaternary climatic changes were found for ITS sequences and SSRs corresponding to different time slices. Coalescent analyses revealed large and constant effective population sizes, with high historical connectivity among the populations for ITS sequences and low effective population sizes and gene flow with recent population retraction for SSRs. ENMs indicated a slight geographical range retraction during the Last Glacial Maximum. A large historical refugium across central Brazil was predicted. Spatially explicit analyses showed a spatial cline pattern in genetic diversity related to the paleodistribution of D. mollis and to the centre of its historical refugium. CONCLUSIONS: The complex genetic patterns found in D. mollis are the result of a slight geographical range retraction during the Last Glacial Maximum followed by population expansion to the east and south from a large refugium in the central part of the Cerrado. This historical refugium is coincident with an area predicted to be climatically stable under future climate scenarios. The identified refugium should be given high priority in conservation polices to safeguard the evolutionary potential of the species under predicted future climatic changes.

The bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is a Neotropical canid with a wide geographic distribution. Although globally listed as Near Threatened, this species was listed as Vulnerable in a recent assessment by the Brazilian government. Few records of this mammal have been reported in the Brazilian Cerrado, and it is considered extinct in several localities as a result of human landscape fragmentation. The record presented here is the first evidence of bush dog presence in the West of Minas Gerais, Brazil, which augments the species distribution with expected occurrence for this region. The study site was a transitional area between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes, in the Triângulo Mineiro region, which is a highly fragmented landscape, dominated by cattle ranches with exotic pasture species and scattered natural patches. We recorded a single bush dog individual in our survey (4,036 camera trap/night), but our sampling success was expected compared with that of other previous mammal surveys using the camera trapping method, in part, because of the species' elusive behavior and low natural densities. This record enhances knowledge of the S. venaticus distribution. Potentially, we confirm the presence of the bug dog in a region that was regarded being environmentally suitable for this species occurrence, but where it has never been reported. Moreover, our result elucidates the potential of the natural remnants to harbor threatened species in highly human-influenced and non-protected landscapes, which is the dominant scenario found in West Minas Gerais, Brasil.


O cachorro-vinagre (Speothos venaticus) é um canídeo Neotropical com uma ampla distribuição geográfica. Embora seja listada globalmente como Quase Ameaçada, esta espécie foi classificada como Vulnerável em recente avaliação do governo brasileiro. Poucos registros para este mamífero foram reportados no Cerrado brasileiro, sendo considerado extinto em várias localidades como resultado da fragmentação da paisagem provocada pelo homem. O registro apresentado aqui é a primeira evidência de ocorrência do cachorro-vinagre no oeste de Minas Gerais, Brasil, o que confirma a distribuição da espécie com ocorrência esperada para esta região. O local de estudo é uma área transicional entre os biomas Cerrado e Mata Atlântica, na região do Triângulo Mineiro, sendo uma paisagem altamente fragmentada dominada por fazendas de criação de gado com pastagem exótica e fragmentos naturais dispersos. Nós registramos somente um único cachorro-vinagre na nossa amostragem (4.036 armadilhas fotográficas/noite), mas o nosso sucesso de amostragem foi esperado comparado com os resultados de outros levantamentos de mamíferos utilizando o método de armadilhamento fotográfico, em parte, devido ao comportamento alusivo e a baixa densidade natural da espécie. Este registro aumenta o conhecimento da distribuição de S. venaticus. Potencialmente, nós confirmamos a presença do cachorro-vinagre em uma região que foi considerada com adequabilidade ambiental para a ocorrência da espécie, mas onde ela não havia sido reportada até momento. Além disso, nosso resultado também reforça o potencial dos remanescentes naturais em abrigar espécies ameaçadas da fauna em paisagens altamente afetadas pelo homem e não protegidas, a qual representa o cenário dominante encontrado no oeste de Minas Gerais, Brasil.

The fragmentation of tropical forests has been identified as the main reason for their biodiversity reduction. This process is extensively occurring in the Brazilian central area, where there still are insufficient information about the remaining flora and fauna of the Neotropical Savanna and Atlantic Forest ecotone. This study aimed to determine the floristic composition and the abundance of the arboreal and subarboreal components of four semideciduos forest fragments. The data indicates that the floristic richness is positively influenced by the fragment area. However, the proximity between fragments has no influence on their floristic composition. It was recorded 126 species belonging to 91 genera distributed in 43 families, with the dominance of Siparuna guianensis Aubl. in all fragments. More than half of the total number of species of the arboreal stratum was not recorded in the subarboreal stratum. In addition, the subarboreal stratum also presented exclusive species. A high number of unique species was also recorded in each fragment, which emphasizes the importance of these remnants conservation, regardless of their sizes and indicates the need to create a management plan to promote connectivity between these fragmented areas.


A fragmentação das florestas tropicais tem sido apontada como a principal causa da redução de sua biodiversidade. Este processo está ocorrendo intensamente no sul de Goiás, onde ainda são escassas as informações sobre flora e fauna remanescentes. Este estudo objetivou determinar a composição florística e a abundância dos componentes arbóreos e arbustivos de quatro fragmentos de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Os dados obtidos indicam que a similaridade e a diversidade florística dos fragmentos são influenciadas pelo seu tamanho, uma vez que fragmentos maiores possuem maior diversidade. Entretanto, a proximidade dos fragmentos não se relaciona com sua composição florística. Ao todo, registraram-se 126 espécies pertencentes a 91 gêneros distribuídos em 43 famílias, com dominância de Siparuna guianensis em todos os fragmentos. Mais da metade das espécies encontradas no estrato arbóreo não foram registradas no estrato subarbóreo, havendo também espécies exclusivas desse estrato. Em cada fragmento foi registrado um alto número de espécies exclusivas, o que demonstra a importância da conservação desses remanescentes, independente do seu tamanho e a necessidade de criação de um plano manejo de conectividade entre as áreas.

Suitability of degraded areas as breeding habitats can be tested through assessment of nest predation rates. In this study we estimated nest success in relation to several potential predictors of nest survival in the Stripe-tailed Yellow-finch (Sicalis citrina) breeding in abandoned mining pits at Brasília National Park. We monitored 73 nests during the 2007-breeding season. Predation was the main cause of nest failure (n = 48, 66%); while six nests were abandoned (8%) and 19 nests produced young (26%). Mayfield’s daily survival rates and nest success were 0.94 and 23%, respectively. Our results from nest survival models on program MARK indicated that daily survival rates increase linearly towards the end of the breeding season and decrease as nests aged. None of the nest individual covariates we tested - nest height, nest size, nest substrate, and edge effect - were important predictors of nest survival; however, nests placed on the most common plant tended to have higher survival probabilities. Also, there was no observer effect on daily survival rates. Our study suggests that abandoned mining pits may be suitable alternative breeding habitats for Striped-tailed Yellow-finches since nest survival rates were similar to other studies in the central cerrado region.


A adequação de habitats degradados para reprodução de aves pode ser testada por meio de avaliação das taxas de predação de ninhos. Neste estudo nós estimamos o sucesso de nidificação do canário-rasteiro (Sicalis citrina) e o relacionamos, por meio de modelagem no programa MARK, com diversos fatores que potencialmente afetam a sobrevivência dos ninhos da espécie em antigas áreas de extração de solo (cascalheiras), no Parque Nacional de Brasília, Distrito Federal. Nós monitoramos 73 ninhos da espécie durante a estação reprodutiva de 2007. Predação foi a principal causa da perda de ninhos (n = 48, 66%), enquanto seis foram abandonados (8%) e 19 produziram ao menos um filhote (26%). A taxa diária de sobrevivência e o sucesso total de Mayfield foram 0,94 and 23%, respectivamente. Nossos resultados, obtidos da modelagem de sobrevivência, indicaram que as taxas de sobrevivência diária dos ninhos aumenta linearmente à medida que avança a estação reprodutiva, ao passo que diminui conforme a idade do ninho aumenta. Nenhum dos fatores que testamos – altura do ninhos, tamanho dos ninhos, planta suporte e distância até a borda dos ambientes de cascalheira – mostraram-se importantes como fatores determinantes do sucesso dos ninhos. Entretanto, ninhos construídos nas plantas mais comuns na área de estudo (samambaias) apresentaram maior tendência de sucesso que os demais. Adicionalmente, não houve interferência do observador nas estimativas de sobrevivência dos ninhos. Nossos resultados sugerem que as antigas áreas de cascalheira podem ser adequadas para a reprodução do canário-rasteiro, uma vez que as taxas de sobrevivência que encontramos neste estudo são similares às encontradas em estudos com outras espécies na região central do Cerrado.

We recorded interactions between frugivorous birds and plants in the Cerrado and we assessed the role and importance of birds as potential seed dispersers. We analyzed the distribution of recorded feeding events, bird-plant interactions, and bird species composition between savanna and forest formations and between the dry and rainy seasons. Samplings were carried out from August 2009 to October 2010 and from November 2011 to August 2012 by means of line transects and focal observations. We recorded 348 feeding events and 187 interactions involving 44 plant species and 60 bird species. Most of the feeding events were observed in the forests and during the dry season (χ2 = 39.529; gl = 1; p < 0.001). However, no significant difference was found in the number of interactions (χ2 = 15.975; gl = 1; p = 0.06) between the two vegetation formations and between seasons. The bird species composition differed between savanna and forest formations (ANOSIM, R = 0.238; p < 0.001) and between the dry and rainy seasons (ANOSIM, R = 0.223; p < 0.001). Most of the potential seed dispersers were generalist birds that preferentially occupy forests during the dry season. Records of feeding events in forest formations increased in the dry season, indicating that birds use these sites as foraging areas during this period. We suggest that the preservation of forests in predominantly savanna-like ecosystems such as the Cerrado is extremely important for frugivorous birds and for frugivore-plant interactions.


Registramos interações entre aves frugívoras e plantas no Cerrado e avaliamos o papel e a importância das aves como potenciais dispersoras de sementes. Observamos como números de registros de alimentação e de interações e composição de espécies de aves se distribuem entre formações savânicas e florestais e entre as estações seca e chuvosa. Realizamos amostragens entre agosto/2009 e outubro/2010 e entre novembro/2011 e agosto/2012 por meio de transecções e observações focais. Observamos 348 registros de alimentação e 187 interações envolvendo 44 espécies de plantas e 60 espécies de aves. A maioria dos registros de alimentação foi observada nas florestas e durante a estação seca (χ2 = 39,529; gl = 1; p < 0,001). Já em relação ao número de interações não encontramos diferença significativa (χ2 = 15,975; gl = 1; p = 0,06) entre as duas formações vegetacionais e entre as estações. A composição de espécies de aves diferiu entre formações savânicas e florestais (ANOSIM, R = 0,238; p < 0,001) e entre as estações seca e chuvosa (ANOSIM, R = 0,223; p < 0,001). A maioria das espécies potencialmente dispersoras foi aves generalistas que ocupam preferencialmente florestas durante a estação seca. Durante a estação seca há aumento de registros de alimentação nas formações florestais, indicativo de que as aves usam estes locais como área de forrageio nesse período. Sugerimos que a manutenção de florestas em ecossistemas predominantemente savânicos como o Cerrado é extremamente importante para a avifauna frugívora e para as interações frugívoro-planta.

The accuracy of artificial nests in representing natural patterns of nest predation has been widely studied in temperate regions and egg size is one of the most tested sources of bias. In the neotropics, experiments with artificial nests usually used larger than natural eggs, despite suggestions in literature that the eggs should be similar to those of the local species. Here, we tested the hypothesis of spatial-temporal variation in predation risk of artificial nests in relation to egg size. We used quail (Coturnix coturnix; large), Chestnut-bellied Seed-finch (Oryzoborus angolensis; small) and plasticine (both sizes) eggs placed in artificial nests. We analyzed daily nest survival using models in the Program MARK. The best-fit model included the effects of egg size and the reproductive period on daily survival of artificial nests. Nests with large eggs had greater Daily Survival Estimates (DSE) than nests with small eggs during two times and DSE were smaller early in the reproductive period. DSE of 0.82 (95% CI = 0.76 to 0.86) and 0.91 (0.87 to 0.93) were recorded for large eggs at the beginning and end periods compared to 0.72 (0.65 to 0.78) and 0.84 (0.79 to 0.88) for small eggs. Birds were more important predators (40% of records) than mammals and reptiles based on signs left on the plasticine eggs. Our results support the hypothesis that larger eggs are less depredated than small ones in artificial bird nests, even when main predators (birds) are different from those commonly observed in the Neotropics (mammals and reptiles). However, controlling the egg size in experiments with artificial nests may not be sufficient to obtain similar time patterns observed in natural nests studied in the Cerrado.


A acurácia de ninhos artificiais em representar padrões naturais de predação de ninhos foi amplamente estudada em regiões temperadas, sendo o tamanho do ovo uma das fontes de erro mais testadas. Nos Neotrópicos, os experimentos com ninhos artificiais geralmente usaram ovos maiores que os naturais, apesar da literatura indicar a necessidade do uso de ovos semelhantes aos das espécies locais. Aqui, testamos hipóteses sobre variação espaço-temporal no risco de predação de ninhos artificiais em função do tamanho do ovo. Para isso, usamos ninhos artificiais com ovos de Codorna (Coturnix coturnix; grandes), Curió (Oryzoborus angolensis; pequenos) e plasticina (ambos tamanhos). Analisamos a sobrevivência diária dos ninhos através de modelos gerados no Programa MARK. O modelo melhor ajustado aos dados incluiu o efeito do tamanho do ovo e do período reprodutivo na sobrevivência diária dos ninhos artificiais. Ninhos com ovos grandes tiveram maiores Estimativas de Sobrevivência Diária (ESD) durante os dois períodos, além disso, as ESD foram menores no início do período reprodutivo. ESD de 0,82 (95% IC = 0,76 a 0,86) e 0,91 (0,87 a 0,93) foram registradas para ovos grandes no início e fim da estação reprodutiva, comparado com 0,72 (0,65 a 0,78) e 0,84 (0,79 a 0,88) registradas para ovos pequenos. As aves foram predadores mais importantes (40% dos registros) que os mamíferos e répteis, de acordo com as marcas deixadas nos ovos de plasticina. Nossos resultados dão suporte à hipótese de que ovos grandes são menos predados do que pequenos, mesmo os principais predadores (Aves) tendo sido diferentes do comumente observado nos Neotrópicos (Mamíferos e Répteis). No entanto, controlar o tamanho dos ovos nos experimentos com ninhos artificiais pode não ser suficiente para se obter padrões temporais similares ao observado em ninhos naturais no Cerrado.

Cybistax antisyphilitica (conhecida vulgarmente como ipê-verde) é uma espécie arbórea com flores esverdeadas, frutos deiscentes e dispersão anemocórica, típica dos Cerrados do Brasil Central. Neste estudo observamos a fenologia vegetativa (queda de folhas e brotamento) e reprodutiva (floração e frutificação) de dezessete indivíduos de C. antisyphilitica localizados no perímetro urbano da cidade de Jataí, GO. As observações foram realizadas duas vezes por mês, no período de maio de 2006 a janeiro de 2009. A população mostrou elevada sincronia dentro de cada fenofase e teve um padrão fenológico sazonal com ciclos anuais. O brotamento ocorreu no final da estação seca, logo após a queda de folhas, que ocorreu ao longo do período seco. A floração ocorreu no início das chuvas, logo após os eventos vegetativos. A deiscência dos frutos e a dispersão das sementes ocorreram no final da estação seca. Em geral, as fenofases correlacionaram-se com todas as variáveis climáticas estudadas, tanto do mês corrente como até dois meses anteriores à data da ocorrência do evento, evidenciando uma relação entre a diminuição da precipitação, da umidade e da temperatura com o aumento gradual na produção de folhas, flores e frutos. Entretanto, afinidades filogenéticas e interações com polinizadores e dispersores também podem atuar no comportamento fenológico de C. antisyphilitica.


The tree Cybistax antisyphilitica (ipê-verde) is widespread in the cerrado of the Brazilian Central Plateau, showing green flowers and dehiscent fruits with wind dispersed seeds. We studied the phenology of leaf fall, leaf flushing, flowering and fruiting in the urban area of Jataí city, Goiás state. Seventeen trees were observed twice a month from May/2006 to January/2009. The trees showed high synchrony within each phenophases, and annual seasonal pattern. Leaf fall occurred in the dry season, followed by leaf flushing in late dry season. Flowering was concentrated in early wet season, soon after the vegetative events. Fruit dehiscence and dispersal of anemochoric seeds occurred at the end of dry season. Usually, events showed negative significant correlations with all environmental variables, both in the current month and up to two months prior to the event occurrence. This suggests a gradual increase in the leaf production, flowers and fruits associated with the decrease in rainfall, humidity and temperature. However, phylogenetic relationships and pollinators and dispersers interactions may also regulate the phenology of C. antisyphilitica.

Introduced African grasses are invading Neotropical savannas and displacing the native herbaceous community. This work, which is part of a program to understand the success of the African grasses, specifically investigates whether introduced and native grasses differ in their water relations. The water relations of the native Trachypogon plumosus and the successful invader Hyparrhenia rufa were studied in the field during two consecutive years in the seasonal savannas of Venezuela. The two C4 grasses differed clearly in their responses to water stress. H. rufa consistently had higher stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, leaf water and osmotic potential and osmotic adjustment than the native T. plumosus. Also, leaf senescence occurred much earlier during the dry season in H. rufa. Both grasses showed a combination of water stress evasion and tolerance mechanisms such as stomatal sensitivity to atmospheric or soil water stress, decreased transpiring area and osmotic adjustment. Evasion mechanisms are more conspicuous in H. rufa whereas T. plumosus is more drought tolerant and uses water more "conservatively". The evasion mechanisms and oportunistic use of water by H. rufa, characteristic of invading species, contribute to, but only partially explain, the success of this grass in the Neotropical savannas where it displaces native plants from sites with better water and nutrient status. Conversely, the higher water stress tolerance of t. plumosus is consistent with its capacity to resist invasion by alien grasses on shallow soils and sites with poorer nutrient and water status.
