The natural wear of the teeth occurs depending on factors such as: quality of the dental structure, quality of the saliva, facial biotype that determines the bite force, according to these local oral factors, the teeth age. But in athletes they present a pattern of greater and continuous wear due to the type of sport they practice, the hours of training, the consumption of drinks with an acidic pH, vigorous tooth brushing; all these factors can lead them to develop non-carious lesions (AU)

RESUMO

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Was to assess the efficacy of Sensodyne toothpast for the improvement of dental hypersensitivity of various origin and the duration of the achieved effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 142 patients of which 95 people had tooth sensitivity. Of these, 4 groups were formed homogeneous by age and sex. Group 1 comprised 27 people (average age 34±3 years) with I grade dental abrasion. Group 2 comprised 23 people (average age 33±5 years) with II grade dental abrasion. Group 3 consisted of 23 people (average age 37±4 years) with grade 3 abrasion with gingival recession of varying severity. Group 4 (comparison) comprised 22 people (mean age 36±4 years) with tooth hypersensitivity who were offered a different toothpaste. The severity of hyperesthesia was assessed using the Schiff method. RESULTS: The study revealed statistically significant decrease in dental sensitivity in all studied groups. The first positive results were noted by day 3. The maximum effect was achieved by day 30 regardless of the etiology of the primary pathology. The hypersensitivity decreased in group 1 from 1.69±0.59 to 0.48±0.20 (by 71.5%), in group 2 from 1.78±0.88 to 0.3±0.22 (by 83.1%), in group 3 from 1.94±0.6 to 0.35±0.17 (by 82%). The duration of the effect obtained was 60 days. In the comparison group, the symptom of hyperesthesia decreased by 51% after 30 days with gingival recession and increased abrasion of hard tissues when using another toothpaste. The achieved effect of reducing hyperesthesia was less stable. At day 60 it decreased by 30% from the maximum value. CONCLUSION: The study proved the high efficiency of the Sensodyne toothpaste as a home remedy for symptomatic treatment of hyperesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The condition of hard teeth tissues while choosing treatment method becomes particularly important due to the large development of adhesive technologies and the choice of filling materials. The quality of adhesion is one of the key factors that affects effectiveness of the entire range of therapeutic interventions, that determines the success of therapeutic treatment and the reliability of therapeutic restorations fixation. The aim of the work is to study the condition of hard teeth tissues in carious and non-carious pathology for further rationale of the choice of filling material and adhesive system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: A thorough examination included teeth that were removed according to the indications. The age of patients, whose teeth were examined, was 25-55 years old according to the classification of age periods adopted at the International Symposium on the Age Periodization (Moscow, 1965). We conducted a morphological study of enamel and dentin of teeth with carious and non-carious lesions (increased erasability, cuneal defects), by obtaining chips and microsections of teeth, followed by examination of the number of enamel prisms, dentinal tubules, their diameter, the thickness of the gaps between these structures. The studies were carried out using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) "Mira 3 LMU" ("Tescan", Czech Republic) with a maximum resolution of 1 nm and a maximum magnification of 1,000,000. Dentally removed teeth were washed in running water, cleaned of plaque, dried by filter paper and crushed by vice, that was followed by the selection of the wreckage for the study. Then, markings in the dentine and enamel zones were made to fix the sizes of enamel prisms and dentinal tubules. RESULTS: Results: After the completion of the determination of enamel prisms and dentinal tubules diameter, counting of their number was carried out according to the method proposed by I.M. Tkachenko, by obtaining a series of digital images of the examined tooth's enamel and dentin with varying degrees of magnification. The number of prisms per unit area characterized the enamel density, on which permeability, hardness, tissue resistance to fracture, bending and modulus of elasticity depends. The number of dentinal tubules characterized the density of dentin and the peculiarities of trophic processes that occur in dentin. Also, in our opinion, the amount of dentinal tubules determines the damping properties of dentin and strength enamel values. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: Thus, the structure of enamel and dentin has peculiarities of the morphological structure at various clinical conditions of hard teeth tissues. This peculiarity can be associated with a decrease of enamel density, that is associated with a decrease in the number of prisms in the non-carious teeth pathology and an increase of the gaps between them.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of cervical dentin hypersensitivity in a cross-sectional investigation of Greek adults. Seven hundred and sixty-seven subjects were examined. Participants were patients processed for first examination in the Clinic of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Athens. The evaluation of hypersensitivity was performed using two methods: for each tooth, the response to a) tactile stimulus and b) air-blast stimulus was measured. Additional factors such as smoking habits, oral health behaviour, consumption of acidic foods, type of toothbrush, daily use of fluoride solution and of desensitising toothpaste, gingival recession and non-carious cervical lesions were recorded and evaluated as causative factors. Descriptive statistics on the demographics of the study sample, of oral health behaviour characteristics and of oral examination findings were performed. Comparisons of these characteristics in the presence or absence of hypersensitivity were conducted with the chi-square test. Data were further analysed using multiple logistic regression modelling. Among study participants, 21·3% had at least one cervical dentin hypersensitivity reaction to the tactile stimulus, and 38·6%, to the air-blast stimulus. Multivariate analysis detected association of the hypersensitivity in tactile or air-blast stimulus with the non-carious lesions and with the gingival recessions. Additionally, a relation between hypersensitivity and air-blast stimulus with gender (female) was found. There was no association between the hypersensitivity in both of the stimuli and the level of education, smoking, consumption of acidic foods, type of toothbrush and daily use of fluoride solution or desensitising toothpaste. The overall prevalence of cervical dentin hypersensitivity in the adult population in Athens ranged from 21·3% to 38·6% depending on the type of stimuli. Cervical non-carious lesions and gingival recessions were determined as significant predictors of dentin hypersensitivity.
