RESUMO

Blood is an important reservoir for Pb storage in living organisms, and the storage of Pb in blood cells inhibits its discharge from blood. However, the mechanism and molecular targets of Pb entry and exit from blood cells have not been elucidated, which is the major barrier to reducing blood Pb levels in normal human beings. In this study, we explored the effect of Pb-binding proteins on blood Pb levels in rats at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.32 µg/g) by identifying the functions of Pb-binding proteins and validating them with inhibitors. The results showed that Pb-binding proteins in blood cells were mainly related to phagocytosis, while in plasma, they were mainly involved in the regulation of endopeptidase activity. Meanwhile, at the normal population Pb levels, endocytosis inhibitors, endopeptidase activity inhibitors, and coadministration of both can reduce the level of Pb in MEL (mouse erythroleukemia cells) cells by up to 50, 40, and 50%, respectively, while in rat blood, the reduction can reach up to 26, 13, and 32%, respectively. Collectively, these findings reveal that endocytosis increases blood Pb levels and provides a possible molecular target for Pb excretion at ambient concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive right ventricular (RV) myocardial work (RVMW) is the latest indicator used to assess RV function. Nevertheless, the physiological determinants of RVMW have not been studied, and reference ranges for normal RVMW indices have yet to be established. METHODS: A total of 263 healthy volunteers (median age: 34 years, males: 38%) were prospectively enrolled. RVMW indices were analysed by an RV pressure-strain loop (RVPSL) in specific software. RESULTS: The lowest values of the RVMW indices in males and females were 133 mmHg% and 206 mmHg% for RV global work index (RVGWI), 165 mmHg% and 241 mmHg% for RV global constructive work (RVGCW) and 78% and 83% for RV global work efficiency (RVGWE), respectively. The highest values for RV global wasted work (RVGWW) in males and females were 67 mmHg% and 69 mmHg%, respectively. RVGWI and RVGCW were significantly lower in males than those in females. RVGWW significantly increased with age in males and females. RVGWE significantly decreased with age in females. Multivariable analysis revealed that RVGWI, RVGCW and RVGWE increased as pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) increased. CONCLUSIONS: Normal reference values of non-invasive RVMW were obtained by echocardiography. Quantitative data on RVMW could be essential in clinical work and clinical experiments.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) myocardial work index (WI) and work efficiency (WE) have become the latest indicators for assessing LV function. Reference ranges for normal LV segmental WI and WE have not been established. METHODS: Four hundred eleven healthy Asian subjects (47% men, median age: 35 years) were enrolled prospectively. WI and WE were analysed using the LV pressure-strain loop (LVPSL) with specific software. RESULTS: WI and WE differed significantly between segments as well as between walls and levels of the left ventricle. The anteroseptal basal segment had the lowest WI and WE (1440 mmHg ± 324 and 92% [88-96], respectively) among the eighteen segments. Significant WI and WE differences were found between sexes and age groups. No correlation was observed between age groups and the average WI of any wall or level in men, while the average WI of several different walls and levels in women showed significant differences between age groups. The average WI of most walls and levels increased with age in women. No correlation was found between age groups and the average WE of any wall or level in either men or women. CONCLUSIONS: This study establishes the normal reference values of WI and WE of eighteen segments for clinical work and clinical experiments. There were significant differences in WI and WE between segments, levels, and walls of the normal left ventricle. Sex should be considered when analysing WI and WE. Age should be considered when analysing WI in women.

The current study aimed to investigate the sagittal morphology of the spinopelvic complex and the components of the lumbar spine in the normal population. In total, 132 adult volunteers were retrospectively evaluated and divided into four groups according to the Roussouly classification. Statistical analysis of radiological parameters, including lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracic kyphosis (TK), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), PI-LL, LL-TK, lumbar vertebral lordosis from L1 to L5 (L1L-L5L), the intervertebral angle from L1-L2 to L5-S1 (IVA1-2-IVA5-1), segmental lordosis from L1 to L5 (S1L-S5L), the proportion of L1-L5 (L1%-L5%), the proportion of the intervertebral angle from L1-L2 to L5-S1 (IVA1-2%-IVA5-1%), and proportion of segmental lordosis from L1 to L5 (S1L%-S5L%), was performed. Based on the classification, type II (n = 46) was the most common, followed by type I (n = 39), type III (n = 36), and type IV (n = 11). The quantitative values of the sagittal parameters of the four groups were obtained. Results showed a significant difference in terms of LL, PI, SS, and LL-TK. Further, L1%, L2%, L3%, IVA1-2%, IVA2-3%, S1L%, S2L%, and S3L% had an increasing trend. PI was positively correlated with LL, S1L, S2L, S3L, S4L, S1L%, and S2L%, but not with S5L%. In conclusion, pelvic parameters had a significant effect on lumbar curvature and lordosis distribution. Further, the abovementioned results were beneficial for individual surgical decision-making regarding targeted intervertebral angle, screw-insertion dimension, and rod contouring.

AIM: To evaluate the use of transtemporal brain contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to assess cerebral blood perfusion in a cohort of children without neurological disorders. METHODS: We included pediatric patients who were undergoing a clinically-indicated CEUS study. Brain scans were performed with a Siemens Sequoia scanner and a 4V1 transducer, that was placed on the left transtemporal bone. Brain scans were performed simultaneously with the images of the clinically-indicated organ of interest. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed to evaluate the hemispherical blood flow at the level of the midbrain during the wash-in and wash-out phases of the time-intensity curve. Clinical charts were reviewed to evaluate post-CEUS adverse events. RESULTS: Five patients were evaluated (mean age 5.8 ± 5.1 years). Qualitatively, more avid enhancement in the midbrain than the cortex was observed. Structures depicted ranged between the centrum semiovale at the level of the lateral ventricles and the midbrain. A quantitative analysis conducted on four patients demonstrated less avid perfusion on the contralateral (i.e. right) side, with a mean left/right ratio ranging between 1.51 and 4.07. In general, there was a steep positive wash-in slope starting at approximately 10 s after contrast injection, reaching a peak intensity around 15-26 s on the left side, and 17-29 s on the right side. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION: Transtemporal brain CEUS is feasible and safe in the pediatric population and allows qualitative and quantitative assessment of cerebral perfusion.

BACKGROUND: Increases in the diameter of the optic nerve sheath (ONSD) on ultrasound are associated with high intracranial pressure (hICP). The normal value varies with altitude and the population studied. The objective of this study is to describe the normal values of the ONSD in a healthy adult population of the city of Bogotá, Colombia, at 2640 meters above sea level (masl). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on a total of 247 healthy individuals recruited from May 2021 to May 2022 who were subjected to the color, low power, optic disk, safety, elevated frequency, dual (CLOSED) protocol for measuring the bilateral ONSD adjusted to the eyeball transverse diameter (ETD). RESULTS: A total of 230 individuals were analyzed; the average ONSD of the right eye (RE) was 0.449 cm (range 0.288-0.7) and that of the left eye (LE) was 0.454 cm (range 0.285-0.698); the correlation between RE and LE was 0.93 (p < 0.005), and the correlation of the ONSD/ETD ratios for the RE and LE was lower (r2 = 0.79, p < 0.005). A total of 10.8% of the studied population had values greater than 0.55 cm. CONCLUSIONS: The median ONSD and ONSD/ETD ratio in the city of Bogotá are similar to those described in other populations; however, approximately 10.8% of the healthy population may present higher values, which would limit the use of ONSD on its own for clinical decision-making, only repeated measurements with significant changes in the ONSD and ONSD/ETD or asymmetries between the measurements of both eyes linked to clinical findings would allow the diagnosis of hICP.

OBJECTIVES: F wave is one of the nerve conduction studies, mainly used to study the proximal pathway of peripheral nerves. One of its applications is dynamic assessment, i.e., before and after physical activity, when symptoms develop in some patients. Best to our knowledge, few studies evaluate normal dynamic F wave values in healthy individuals. This study aims to determine and compare normal values of several parameters of Compound Muscle Action Potential (CMAP) and F waves of tibial nerves dynamically before and after physical activity in the lower extremities of 34 normal subjects. These parameters were recorded before and after 15 min of continuous walking at intervals of 1, 5, and 10 min after the end of physical activity. RESULTS: Normal values of CMAP onset latency and amplitude, minimum, maximum, and mean latency of 10 F waves, F chronodispersion, and F persistence were dynamically collected before and during 10 min after physical activity in three phases. Some of the parameters showed significant changes (P < 0.05). Although physical activity showed statistically significant effects on some CMAP and F wave parameters (especially F chronodispersion) in normal subjects, none of them exceeded the normal clinical values introduced in the literature.

BACKGROUND: HLA genotyping is a prerequisite for selection of suitable donors in the process of bone marrow transplantation. METHODS: In the current study, the frequencies of HLA-A, -B, -C and -DRB1 alleles and A-B-C-DRB1 haplotypes were assessed in 855 healthy Iranian persons using a low-resolution sequence specific primer (SSP) kit. RESULTS: Frequencies were compared between 11 subpopulations including Armani, Balouch, Bandari, Turk, Turkaman, Arab, Fars, Kurd, Gilaki, Lor and Mazani. In total, 17 HLA-A alleles were detected, one of which (HLA-A*74) was present only among Lors. HLA-A*23 and -A*26 were the most frequent HLA-A alleles among Armanis. HLA-A*23 was also common among Turkamans. HLA-A*11 and -A*26 were most frequent among the Balouch subpopulation. The former allele was also frequent among Bandaris. HLA-A*02 was identified as the most common HLA-A allele among Turk, Arab and Fars subpopulations. HLA-A*30 were strongly enriched among Gilakis. A total of 31 HLA-B alleles were detected across the target population. While all alleles were present among Fars subgroup, Armanis and Turkamans had the lowest degree of diversity among the alleles examined. Moreover, HLA-B*35 and B*49 alleles were strongly enriched among Armanis and Turkamans, respectively. A total of 13 HLA-C alleles were identified across the population, all of which were present in the Fars subpopulation. HLA-C*03 and C*04 were the only HLA-C alleles identified among the Bandari subpopulation. HLA-DRB1*08 was not detected in any subpopulation other than Fars. HLA-DRB1*16 was significantly enriched among Bandaris. These data have practical significance in anthropological studies, disease association investigations and bone marrow transplantation.

BACKGROUND: High serum bilirubin levels have been shown to be associated with an improved pulmonary function test results. Their potential ability to similarly benefit pulmonary function in an environment of polluted air has not been tested. We retrospectively analyzed data of 15,605 apparently healthy individuals in order to evaluate the effect of serum bilirubin levels on forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). METHODS: Individuals attended the Tel-Aviv Medical Center Inflammatory Survey for a routine annual health check between February, 2002 and June, 2009 and were divided into low, medium and high serum bilirubin levels. Their FEV1 results were compared under various levels of air pollution. Air pollution and weather data were obtained from air pollution monitoring stations of the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection. RESULTS: The elevated serum bilirubin concentrations on FEV1 were evaluated under moderate and high pollution levels FEV1 and were significantly higher in participants with high blood bilirubin levels compared to medium or low levels (p < 0.001 and p = 0.018, respectively). Participants with high levels of bilirubin had preserved FEV1 under exposure to high and medium pollution levels of both Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) pollutants (p = 0.003 and p = 0.022, respectively). The multivariate regression analysis revealed that the influence of bilirubin under conditions of air pollution remained significant even after adjustment for FEV1 confounders, but the interaction was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated serum bilirubin concentrations are associated with preserved lung function in healthy individuals in Israel exposed to high levels of air pollution.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies regarding the relationships between plasma amyloid-ß (Aß) levels and cognitive performance had inconsistent results. In this study, we aimed to characterize the relationship between cognitive decline and plasma Aß levels in a large-sample cognitively normal population. METHODS: This population-based, prospective cohort study included 1,240 participants with normal cognition. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function at baseline and 2 years later. Restricted cubic splines, multivariate logistic regression, and multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the type of relationship between cognitive decline during the 2-year follow-up period and plasma Aß levels (Aß40, Aß42, and Aß42 / 40). RESULTS: Participants with moderate Aß40 levels had the highest risk of cognitive decline during a 2-year follow-up relative to individuals with low Aß40 [odds ratio (OR): 0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.45-0.81, p < 0.001] or high Aß40 (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.49-0.87, p = 0.004) levels. The association between Aß40 and cognitive decline did not depend on sex, education level, or APOE ε4 status. There was an interaction found between age (≤ 65 and > 65 years) and Aß40 (p for interaction = 0.021). In individuals older than 65 years, there was a positive linear relationship between plasma Aß40 and cognitive decline (OR: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.04, p = 0.027). For participants ≤ 65 years old, the lower Aß40 and higher Aß40 groups had a lower risk of cognitive decline than the medium Aß40 group (OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.50-0.94, p = 0.02; OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.45-0.86, p = 0.004). None of relationship between plasma Aß42, Aß42 / 40 and cognitive decline was found during a 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: The relationship between plasma Aß40 and cognitive decline was not linear, but an inverted-U shape in a cognitively normal population. The underlying mechanism requires further investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Fragmented QRS (fQRS) complex on routine 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) predicts adverse outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it has been found to be associated with subclinical myocardial dysfunction in chronic diseases. We sought to investigate the relationship between the presence of fQRS with the myocardial functions in individuals free from known systemic cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: In a case-control study, we evaluated normal individuals from March 2017 to February 2018. All participants underwent a 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiographic examination using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and speckle-tracking echocardiography. In addition, all participants were examined using a 12-lead surface ECG, and patients with fQRS and a group of age- and sex-matched controls without fQRS were enrolled in our study. RESULTS: The patients' mean age was 40.3 ± 10.7 and 35.4 ± 11.2 years in fQRS-positive and fQRS-negative groups, respectively (P = .110). Patients with fQRS had significantly lower values of apical left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV GLS) in 2-chamber (16.9 ± 2.5 vs. 20.5 ± 3.3, P < .001), 4-chamber (16.9 ± 3.4 vs. 20.1 ± 3, P = .001), LAX views (17.7 ± 2.8 vs. 20.8 ± 3.5, P = .001), and averaged LV GLS (17 ± 2.6 vs. 20.4 ± 2.7, P < .001) values compared to patients without fQRS. In a multivariate analysis, averaged LV GLS and smoking history were independent predictors for positive fQRS. CONCLUSION: The presence of fQRS on 12-lead ECG in healthy population was associated with lower values of LV GLS compared to normal individuals without fQRS.

BACKGROUND: Global left ventricular (LV) myocardial work efficiency, the ratio of constructive to wasted work in all LV segments, reflects the efficiency by which mechanical energy is expended during the cardiac cycle. Global LV myocardial work efficiency can be derived from LV pressure-strain loop analysis incorporating both noninvasively estimated blood pressure recordings and echocardiographic strain data. The aim of this study was to characterize global LV myocardial work efficiency in healthy individuals and patients with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors or overt cardiac disease. METHODS: We retrospectively included healthy individuals without structural heart disease or CV risk factors, who were selected from an ongoing database of normal individuals, and matched for age and sex with (1) individuals without structural heart disease but with CV risk factors, (2) postinfarct patients without heart failure, and (3) heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Global LV myocardial work efficiency was estimated with a proprietary algorithm from speckle-tracking strain analyses, as well as noninvasive blood pressure measurements. RESULTS: In total, 120 individuals (44% male, 53 ± 13 years) were included (n = 30 per group). In healthy individuals without structural heart disease or CV risk factors, global LV myocardial work efficiency was 96.0% (interquartile range, 95.0%-96.3%). Myocardial efficiency of the LV did not differ significantly between individuals without structural heart disease and those with CV risk factors (96.0% vs 96.0%; P = .589). Global LV myocardial work efficiency, however, was significantly decreased in postinfarct patients (96.0% vs 93.0%, P < .001) and in those with HFrEF (96.0% vs 69.0%; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: While global LV myocardial work efficiency was similar in normal individuals and in those with CV risk factors, it was decreased in postinfarct and HFrEF patients. The global LV myocardial work efficiency values presented here show distinct patterns in different cardiac pathologies.

BACKGROUND: While chronic respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, little is known about the effect of blood eosinophil levels on lung function trajectories among healthy individuals. METHODS: We analyzed data of apparently healthy individuals (n=18,089) recruited for the Tel Aviv Medical Center Inflammation Survey. Blood eosinophil levels were compared between participants with normal and those with abnormal lung function. Multivariate regression was used to assess the OR of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) deterioration according to baseline eosinophils in subjects with normal lung function (n=4,141) during a follow-up period of 4 years. RESULTS: Participants with an abnormal, as opposed to a normal, pulmonary function test (PFT) (n=1,832, 10.1%) had significantly higher eosinophil levels, expressed as a percentage or count (2.99%±2.00% compared to 2.67%±1.88% and 0.2210e3/µL±0.163/µL compared to 0.1810e3/µL±0.183/µL, respectively; P<0.001 for both). Among participants with a normal PFT at baseline, those with an eosinophil percentage higher than 4% showed a higher risk for FEV1 decline above 60 mL/year (OR=1.199, 95% CI=1.005-1.431, P=0.044). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that higher blood eosinophil levels can predict PFT deterioration even in apparently healthy subjects, implying that these individuals could benefit from frequent lung function evaluation.

PURPOSE: The KOOS questionnaire is used to assess the symptoms and function of patients with traumatic or degenerative knee pathology. The WOMAC score has been validated mainly in the context of knee osteoarthritis. The distribution of these scores in a non-diseased population is not known. The hypothesis was that KOOS and WOMAC scores were influenced by patients' age, sex, and BMI. The primary objective of this study was to describe, for the first time, the distribution of KOOS and WOMAC scores in a healthy population based on age, sex, and BMI. METHODS: This was a pilot (innovative), cross-sectional, international, multicenter, descriptive study. Persons accompanying patients to our clinic were invited to participate in this study by filling out the KOOS questionnaire. These data were also used to calculate the WOMAC score. The study was designed according to guidelines on pilot studies and planned to enroll a minimum of 30 subjects in each age, gender, and BMI group. Expected KOOS and WOMAC scores by age, gender, and BMI were determined using a linear regression model. RESULTS: Seven hundred and fourteen subjects were included: 305 men (42.7%) and 409 women (57.3%). For the KOOS score, as age increases, there was a decrease in the "ADL" (p = 0.0001) and "sport" (p = 0.0001) items and an increase in the "symptoms" (p = 0.0025) and "QOL" items (p = 0.0001). Women had lower scores (p < 0.05) than men on all the KOOS items, except "QOL". For the WOMAC, the "pain", "stiffness", and "function" items varied significantly based on age (p = 0.0203) and sex (p = 0.0121). The "stiffness" item varied significantly based on age (p = 0.0005) and sex (p = 0.0477). The "function" item varied significantly based on age (p = 0.0001) and sex (p = 0.0256). The expected value for the KOOS and WOMAC scores in a healthy population without any knee ailments were determined. CONCLUSIONS: The KOOS and WOMAC scores vary significantly based on age, sex, and BMI in a healthy population. This study also provides KOOS and WOMAC values in a population without any knee issue. These scores can be used, in a daily practice, as a reference to assess functional outcomes after a surgical procedure. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

BACKGROUND: Research on the association between decision making and inhibition abilities has exhibited fundamental controversies. Some authors claim that inhibition abilities are an integral part of the decision-making process, whereas others suggest that the decision-making process does not operate in close association with inhibition abilities. Can gender explain variations in risky decisions via inhibition influences? PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to explore the associations between response inhibition, reflection inhibition, interference inhibition, and decision-making processes in men and women. METHODS: To this end, 46 women and 46 men were assessed by the Go/NoGo task, a measure of response inhibition, by the Matching Familiar Figure Test, a measure of reflection inhibition; and by the Stroop task, a measure of interference inhibition. RESULTS: No differences were detected in these measures between groups. The net score of the performance on the last section of the Iowa Gambling Task choices did not correlate with the inhibition measures in the two groups. We did not discover any significant main effects of gender on the association between these measures. CONCLUSION: These findings do not support the hypothesis that risky decisions are due to impaired inhibitory control. Further studies are needed to identify the cognitive mechanisms involved in the tendency to make risky decisions.

BACKGROUND: In the human evolutionary history, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) frequencies are valuable in terms of finding connections between different populations. Due to the pronounced role of the immune system in combating pathogens and environmental stressors, polymorphisms in the immune genes are subject to selection pressure of the diseases as well. The functional polymorphisms in NF-κB1 promoter (-94 ins/del) are associated with different diseases; therefore, we aimed to establish the frequencies of NF-κB1 rs28362491 alleles in a population of Southwestern Iranians in comparison with the world populations. METHODS: We assessed the polymorphism of -94 ATTG ins/del (rs28362491) in 201 Iranian healthy blood donors from Fars Province, central Iran in a one year period between 2015 and 2016 by PCR-RFLP method using DNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. RESULTS: The frequency of ins/ins homozygote genotype was found to be 46.97%. The frequency of heterozygote individuals was 42.42% and the percentage of del/del homozygote genotype was 10.61%. We observed a genetic similarity based on the genotype frequencies of NF-κB1 -94 ins/del ATTG polymorphism between our sample of Iranians with American Jewish, Turkish, American non-Jewish, Chinese-Uyghurs and Germans. CONCLUSION: The results confirmed genetic interrelation of Iranians with some ancient neighbors and their admixture with countries along the Silk Road. We suggest that mapping the distribution of NF-κB1-94 ATTG ins/del along with HLA genes may help to better define the relations between human populations and design population-specific vaccines for pathogens with a high rate of variation.

OBJECTIVES: Language is an important human function, and is a determinant of the quality of life. In conditions such as brain lesions, disruption of the language function may occur, and lesion resection is a solution for that. Presurgical planning to determine the language-related brain areas would enhance the chances of language preservation after the operation; however, availability of a normative language template is essential. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, using data from 60 young individuals who were meticulously checked for mental and physical health, and using fMRI and robust imaging and data analysis methods, functional brain maps for the language production, perception and semantic were produced. RESULTS: The obtained templates showed that the language function should be considered as the product of the collaboration of a network of brain regions, instead of considering only few brain areas to be involved in that. CONCLUSION: This study has important clinical applications, and extends our knowledge on the neuroanatomy of the language function.

OBJECTIVE: MMP-8 is a prominent collagenase in periodontal disease. This cross-sectional study examined whether MMP-8 levels in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) are associated with periodontitis in a Swiss population. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 258 subjects (107 m, 151 f, mean age: 43.5 yr; range: 21-58 yr) acquired from the Swiss bone marrow donor registry participated in the study. Saliva and GCF samples were collected from subjects followed by a thorough dental and periodontal examination. MMP-8 levels were determined with immunofluorometric assay. Associations of MMP-8 levels with periodontal diagnosis, probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing were statistically analysed with Pearson chi-square test, Spearman's rho and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: MMP-8 in GCF correlated with MMP-8 in saliva (p < .001). Periodontitis was more common (p < .001) among subjects with high levels of MMP-8 in saliva and/or GCF compared with subjects with low levels of MMP-8. Higher MMP-8 levels in GCF and saliva were associated with any periodontal diagnosis (mild, moderate or severe), greater PPD, and bleeding on probing (p < .05). When age, gender, smoking, body mass index, number of medications and decayed, missing and filled teeth were adjusted for, all observed associations remained statistically significant. The area under curve of receiver-operating characteristic was 0.67 for saliva and 0.71 for GCF. CONCLUSION: Elevated MMP-8 levels both in saliva and GCF are associated with periodontitis in a normal adult population.

Right ventricular (RV) strain values by 2-dimensional strain echocardiography (STE) can be used as objective markers of RV systolic function. However, there is little data about normal reference RV strain values according to age and gender. We measured normal RV strain values by STE. RV strain values were analyzed from the digitally stored echocardiographic images from NORMAL (Normal echOcardiogRaphic diMensions and functions in KoreAn popuLation) study for the measurement of normal echocardiographic values performed in 23 Korean university hospitals. We enrolled total 1003 healthy persons in the NORMAL study. Of them, we analyzed 2-dimensional RV strain values in 493 subjects (261 females, mean 47 ± 15 years old) only with echocardiographic images by GE machines. Their LV systolic and diastolic functions were normal. RV fractional area change was 48 ± 6% and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion was 23 ± 3 mm. Total RV global longitudinal peak systolic strain (RVGLStotal) was -21.5 ± 3.2%. Females had higher absolute RVGLStotal (-22.3 ± 3.3 vs -20.7 ± 2.9%, p < 0.001) than males. Younger (<50 years old) females had higher absolute RVGLStotal (-22.9 ± 3.2 vs -20.5 ± 2.8%, p < 0.001) than age matched males. RVGLStotal in females gradually increased according to age (p for trend = 0.002) and becomes almost similar in age ≥50 years. However, this trend was not seen in males (p for trend = 0.287), and younger males had similar RVGLStotal value to that of older males (age ≥50 years, -20.5 ± 2.8 vs -20.9 ± 3.1%, p = 0.224). We calculated normal RVGLS values in normal population. Females have higher absolute strain values than males, especially in younger age groups (<50 years old).

Reports on the incidence of persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) in the normal population are limited to studies involving pacemaker implantation candidates and cadavers. The incidence in patients with congenital heart diseases (CHDs) is estimated to be higher than that in the normal population; however, the details are unclear. To investigate the incidence of PLSVC in the normal population and in patients with CHDs, subjects were examined prospectively using echocardiography. Normal subjects consisted of 2841 successive neonates without intra-cardiac or congenital anomalies born in Gifu Prefectural General Medical Center. Additionally, 1920 patients with CHDs were evaluated. The incidence of PLSVC in normal neonates was 0.21% (95% confidence interval 0.042-0.38%). A high incidence (more than 7.0 times the incidence in normal subjects) was observed in all CHD patients. The high incidence group included coarctation of the aorta (CoA) (23.7%) and double outlet right ventricle (DORV) patients (24.6%). The second group consisted of CHD patients with ventricular septal defect (VSD), with an incidence ranging from 5.1 to 6.1%. The low incidence group comprised patients with other CHDs, with an incidence between 1.5 and 3.1%. The incidence of PLSVC in trisomy 21 and atrial septal defect patients was significantly higher than that in normal neonates. The incidence of PLSVC in the normal population and in patients with CHDs was systematically evaluated for the first time. The incidence in CHD patients appeared to be positively influenced by the type of CHD, particularly by DORV, CoA, and VSD.
