RESUMO

Permanent deformation in asphalt concrete pavements is pervasive distress [1], influenced by various factors such as environmental conditions, traffic loading, and mixture properties. A meticulous investigation into these factors has been conducted, yielding a robust dataset from uniaxial repeated load tests on 108 asphalt concrete samples. Each sample underwent systematic evaluation under varied test temperatures, loading conditions, and mixture properties, ensuring the data's comprehensiveness and reliability. The materials used, sourced locally, were selected to enhance the study's relevance to pavement constructions in hot climate areas, considering different asphalt cement grades and contents to understand material variability effects on deformation. The detailed dataset created from the experimental program acts as a pivotal resource for refining predictive models and optimizing asphalt concrete mixtures and pavement design strategies, aimed at improving pavement performance and longevity under diverse operational and environmental conditions.

Of major concern is the lack of correlation between the material design and structural function of asphalt pavement in China. The objective of this paper is to identify the layer in asphalt pavement where permanent deformation occurs most seriously and to propose a control index for that layer's asphalt mixture. The permanent deformation of each layer was determined through the utilization of thickness measurements obtained from field cores. The results indicate that the reduction in thickness is more significant in the driving lane than in the ridge band and shoulder. This phenomenon can be attributed to the intensified densification and shearing deformation that arise from the combined impacts of recurrent axle loads and high temperatures. Compared to surface and base layers, the bearing layer is the primary area of concern for permanent deformation in asphalt pavement. Therefore, it is imperative to incorporate the ability of bearing-layer asphalt mixture to withstand permanent deformation as a crucial design parameter. The dynamic modulus of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture is significantly influenced by the type of asphalt, gradation, and asphalt content, compared to other design parameters. Based on the relationship established between dynamic modulus and dynamic stability, with creep rate as the intermediate term, a control standard was proposed to evaluate the permanent deformation of the bearing-layer asphalt mixture. This study can provide reasonable and effective guidance for prolonging pavement life and improving pavement performance.

Cotton-wrapped elastane core yarns have been widely used in producing stretch denim fabrics due to their comfortable stretching and recovery, but they suffer from undesirable fabric growth under prolonged or repeated stress. To reduce that problem, an additional semi-elastic multifilament has been incorporated with the elastane core, called dual-core yarn. Herein, it was intended to produce well-engineered dual-core yarns possessing high elasticity with low bagging. Twenty types of cotton-wrapped elastane/T400 multifilament dual-core yarns with different combinations of elastane and T400 tension draft were produced on industrial scale in a spinning mill. Structural parameters, tensile properties and elastic recovery behavior under cyclic loading of the yarns were thoroughly studied. For an optimum combination of elastane/T400 draft, the dual-core yarn attained excellent tenacity and elongation with significantly low evenness, imperfections and hairiness values. More importantly, the results of the cyclic loading study explicitly revealed a remarkable reduction in plastic deformation and stress decay indicating low growth and high resilience of yarn after deformation. The dual-core yarn containing high strength, high elongation and low growth obtained here can have durable stretch jeans with high body movement comfort and long-lasting shape retention.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to quantify the valgus laxity and strain of the elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) complex after repeated valgus stretching and subsequent recovery. Understanding these changes may have important implications in improving strategies for injury prevention and treatment. The hypothesis was that the UCL complex will demonstrate a permanent increase in valgus laxity and region-specific increase in strain as well as region-specific recovery characteristics. METHODS: Ten cadaveric elbows (7M, 3F, 61.7 ± 2.7 years) were used. Valgus angle and strain of the anterior and posterior bands of the anterior bundle and the posterior bundle were measured at 1 Nm, 2.5 Nm, 5 Nm, 7.5 Nm, and 10 Nm of valgus torque at 70° of flexion for: (1) intact UCL, (2) stretched UCL, and (3) rested UCL. To stretch the UCL, elbows were cycled with increasing valgus torque at 70° of flexion (10 Nm-20 Nm in 1 Nm increments) until the valgus angle increased 8° from the intact valgus angle measured at 1Nm. This position was held for 30 minutes. Specimens were then unloaded and rested for 2 hours. Linear mixed effects model with Tukey's post hoc test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Stretching significantly increased valgus angle compared to the intact condition 3.2° ± 0.2° (P < .001). Strains of both the anterior and posterior bands of the anterior bundle were significantly increased from intact by 2.8% ± 0.9% (P = .015) and 3.1% ± 0.9% (P = .018), respectively at 10 Nm. Strain in the distal segment of the anterior band was significantly higher than the proximal segment with loads of 5 Nm and higher (P < .030). After resting, the valgus angle significantly decreased from the stretched condition by 1.0° ± 0.1° (P < .001) but failed to recover to intact levels (P < .004). After resting, the posterior band had a significantly increased strain compared to the intact state of 2.6% ± 1.4% (P = .049) while the anterior band was not significantly different from intact. CONCLUSION: After repeated valgus loading and subsequent resting, the UCL complex demonstrated permanent stretching with some recovery but not to intact levels. The anterior band demonstrated increased strain in the distal segment compared to the proximal segment with valgus loading. The anterior band was able to recover to strain levels similar to intact after resting, while the posterior band did not.

The amount of residual Multi-layer Plastic Packaging (MPP) in Canada has greatly increased in the last two decades, which has economic and environmental consequences. MPP is primarily made up of two or more layers of Polyethylene (PE), Polyester (PET), Nylon (NY), and Metalized Polyester (METPET). While MPP has not been used as an asphalt modifier, some of the materials commonly found in MPP, such as PE and PET, have also been successfully used as asphalt modifiers. Nevertheless, a few recent studies have demonstrated the potential for reusing MPP as an asphalt modifier to improve asphalt pavement performance. Recycling post-industrial MPP instead of using raw polymers could lead to economic and environmental benefits. However, a comprehensive study to evaluate MPP as a viable asphalt additive is lacking. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using MPP as an asphalt modifier via the wet method, considering the physical, thermal, rheological, and storage properties of the MPP-modified binder at different MPP concentrations (2%, 4%, and 8%) in asphalt cement (PG 58-28). MPP-modified binders were evaluated using the following instruments: Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Superpave Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Rotational Viscosity (RV), and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). Test results indicated that the incorporation of MPP has a strong potential to improve permanent deformation resistance at high temperatures. In addition, MPP shows a moderate impact on fatigue cracking performance at intermediate temperatures. Overall, in low-temperature climates, using less than 4% of MPP additives would offer higher fatigue damage resistance along with adequate permanent deformation. In high-temperature climates, higher concentrations of additives may be preferable to resist permanent deformation. Finally, MPP is a challenge for existing recycling systems, and its incorporation into asphalt applications may develop more sustainable materials that would contribute to circular economy principles.

The majority of existing regression models for unbound granular materials (UGMs) consider only the effects of the number of loading cycles and stress levels on the permanent deformation characteristics and are thus unable to account for the complexity of plastic deformation accumulation behavior influenced by other factors, such as dry density, moisture content and gradation. In this study, research efforts were made to develop artificial-neural-network (ANN)-based prediction models for the permanent deformation of UGMs. A series of laboratory repeated load triaxial tests were conducted on UGM specimens with varying gradations to simulate realistic stress paths exerted by moving wheel loads and study permanent deformation characteristics. On the basis of the laboratory testing database, the ANN prediction models were established. Parametric sensitivity analyses were then performed to evaluate and rank the relative importance of each factor on permanent deformation behavior. The results indicated that the developed ANN prediction model is more accurate and reliable as compared to previously published regression models. The two major factors influencing the magnitude of accumulated plastic deformation of UGMs are the shear stress ratio (SSR) and the number of loading cycles, of which the calculated influence coefficients are 38% and 41%, respectively, while the degree of influence of gradation is twice that of the confining pressure.

The circular use of resources (i.e., reuse and recycling of materials) aiming for zero waste is also gaining increasing attention in pavement engineering. In this regard, the possible use of waste plastics in asphalt materials is of strategic importance since a considerable amount of plastic waste from construction and demolition waste and municipal solid waste is generated every year. Given this background, this experimental study aimed to investigate the feasibility of recycling waste polyethylene (PE) into asphalt mixtures. For this purpose, the dry addition of plastic shreds was evaluated to overcome the drawbacks observed in a previous interlaboratory research on PE-modified bituminous binder (i.e., instability/inhomogeneity of blend as well as the need for PE grinding). A comparative laboratory study was carried out on dense graded asphalt mixtures containing different amounts of waste plastics (i.e., 0%, 0.25%, and 1.5% by weight of the mixture). The selected asphalt mixes were investigated in terms of workability, linear visco-elastic characteristics, stiffness, strength, resistance to permanent deformation, and moisture sensitivity. Overall, the experimental findings show that the mixes prepared with the dry addition of plastic wastes were able to guarantee almost the same workability and moisture resistance as the reference material while leading to enhanced performance in terms of stiffness and permanent deformation resistance, with better responses for the higher investigated PE dosage.

Crack sealing is an important measure for pavement maintenance. Hot-poured crack sealant is the most utilized material for crack sealing. However, its poor high-temperature and rheological properties seriously weaken the mechanical properties of repaired pavement. Thus, to overcome the disadvantage of the poor high-temperature and rheological properties of sealant, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and rubber crumb (CR) were utilized for modifying the asphalt-based sealants. Softening point tests, temperature tests, frequency scan tests, and multiple stress creep recovery tests (MSCR) were conducted to evaluate the high-temperature and rheological properties of the modified sealant. Additionally, the influence of SBS and CR on the high-temperature performance of the modified sealant was quantitatively analyzed by the grey relational analysis method. The results reveal that the SBS has a greater enhancement effect on the high-temperature performance of sealant than CR. Increasing the SBS and CR content in the sealant could enhance the sealant's high-temperature performance, stiffness, and elasticity. Compared with asphalt-based sealant and one-component modified asphalt-based sealant, SBS/CR-modified asphalt sealant has greater viscosity and higher temperature deformation resistance. Additionally, SBS can increase the stress level of the sealant, thereby enhancing the resistance of the sealant to permanent deformation.

Permanent deformation is one of the dominant asphalt concrete damages. Significant progress has been made to realistically predict the damage. In the last decade, the mechanistic approach has been the focus of research, and the fundamental theories of viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, continuum mechanics, and micromechanics are applied to develop the material laws (constitutive equations). This paper reviews the advancement of permanent deformation models including analogical, microstructural, and continuum-based methods. Pavement analysis using the nonlinear damage approach (PANDA) is the most comprehensive and theoretically sound approach that is available in the literature. The model coupled different damages and other phenomena (such as cracking, moisture, and phenomena such as healing, aging, etc.). The anisotropic microstructure approach can be incorporated into the PANDA approach for a more realistic prediction. Moreover, the interaction of fatigue and permanent deformation is the gap that is lacking in the literature. The mechanistic approaches have the capacity to couple these damages for unified asphalt concrete damage prediction.

Despite widespread agreement on the beneficial nature of hydrated lime (HL) addition to asphalt concrete mixes, understanding of the effect of HL particle size is still limited. Previous investigations have focused mainly on two different size comparisons, and so certain guidance for a practical application cannot yet be produced. This study investigates three distinct sizes of HL, in the range of regular, nano, and sub-nano scales, for their effects on the properties of modified asphalt concretes. Five different percentages of HL as a partial replacement of ordinary limestone filler in asphalt concrete mixes were studied for wearing course application purposes. Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties, including resistance to plastic flow, volumetric properties, moisture susceptibility, resilient modulus, and permanent deformation. The results revealed that a positive correlation exists between the mechanical properties and the fineness of HL particle sizes.

Steel slag is a main form of solid waste. Using this component to replace part of the aggregate in an asphalt mixture is an effectively way of treating solid waste. To study the performance degradation of asphalt mixture with various content of steel slag under heavy loading, some large-sized basalt hot mixed asphalt mixture (BHMA) and steel slag hot mixed asphalt mixture (SHMA) in a form of specimens were prepared and a heavy loading wheel tracking test was conducted. The aggregate characteristics of basalt and steel slag were measured. The deformation and skid resistance of the asphalt mixture with different content of steel slag was tested and analyzed. Due to the particle characteristics of steel slag aggregate, it was found that a low content of steel slag can effectively improve the resistance to deformation and skid resistance of the asphalt mixture under heavy loading. The response of SHMA can still meet the pavement technical requirement after long-term heavy loading service. The main change in the mixture under heavy loading is the crushing of the 9.5-16 mm aggregate, and the content of this part also significantly affects the deformation. This study explains the mechanism of degradation of SHMA under heavy loading: the large aggregate is crushed and forms a new aggregate skeleton structure.

Recycled Excavation Materials (REM) are becoming viable alternative construction resources due to their economic benefits. However, REM may be composed of weak rocks, e.g., phyllites, limiting the use in a base layer. The present paper attempts to further the knowledge of the mechanical performance of REM by performing Repeated Load Triaxial Tests (RLTT). REM are mixed with Recycled Phyllite Materials (RPM) in systematic blends of 0%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. The batches' resilient modulus (MR) and permanent deformation (PD) characteristics were assessed to establish the maximum RPM allowed into REM while maintaining the required performance. Hicks and Monismith's and Uzan's models were used to characterize the stiffness behavior. A wide variation in the stiffness between the two materials was observed. Batches comprised of 0% RPM-100% REM and 25% RPM-75% REM showed high stiffness performance. The Coulomb model assessed the PD behavior, and the results showed a similar response for all batches. Unlike the stiffness, blended mixtures did not show sensitivity to increased RPM content in the PD. This study may help end-users to understand the performance of REM given the documented threshold on the allowable quantity of RPM in REM.

As a first line option in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), direct aspiration is a fast and effective technique with promising outcomes. In silico models are widely used for design and preclinical assessment of new developed devices and therapeutic methods. Accurate modelling of the mechanical behaviour of blood clot is a key factor in the design and simulation of aspiration devices. In this study we develop a new constitutive model which incorporates the unrecoverable plastic deformation of clots. The model is developed based on the deformation-induced microstructural changes in fibrin network, including the formation and dissociation of the cross-links between fibrin fibres. The model is calibrated using previously reported experimentally measured permanent clot deformation following uniaxial stretching. The calibrated plasticity model is then used to simulate aspiration thrombectomy. Results reveal that inclusion of permanent plastic deformation results in âˆ¼ 15 % increase in clot aspiration length at an applied aspiration pressure of 100 mmHg. The constitutive law developed in this study provides a basis for improved design and evaluation of novel aspiration catheters leading to increased first-pass revascularization rate.

Solar harvesting systems applied to asphalt roads consist of pipes or coils installed a few centimeters below the asphalt pavement surface. They work thanks to a circulating fluid able to collect the heat coming from solar irradiation of the pavement surface and convert it into thermal gradients that can be used for electric energy supply. Specific attention must be paid to the design of the asphalt mixtures comprising the system. In this sense, the high in-service temperature rutting potential is one of the main issues to be assessed in such applications since the thermal optimization of asphalt mixes could lead to excessively deformable materials. The present study is a part of a wider research area aimed at developing an efficient asphalt solar collector. Here, a laboratory mixture-scale investigation is proposed to verify the anti-rutting potential of specific asphalt layers that were initially designed based on thermal properties only. Repeated load axial and wheel tracking tests are carried out on limestone- and steel slag-based bituminous mixtures. Overall, the tested layers were not fully able to satisfy the permanent deformation acceptance criteria; in this regard, possible improvements in terms of mix constituents and properties are ultimately addressed.

Waste rubber from end-of-life tires has been proved to be an excellent source of polymeric material for paving applications. Over the years, however, the rubberized asphalt technology has never been used in 'lean' (low bitumen content) asphalt mixtures typically used in arid regions. This study offers an insight on the potential benefits and drawbacks resulting from this technology if applied in such 'lean' mixes. Results show that the 'lean' nature of those asphalt mixes eliminates the potential benefits given by the modified bitumen for rutting performance. Instead, the aggregates gradation plays a major role in the response of the materials, with gap-graded mixtures often outperforming those with a dense-graded gradation. On the contrary, fatigue cracking resistance is affected by the bitumen properties, and rubberized asphalt perform better than others. The performance-based analysis suggests that the current specifications tend to overachieve the goal of reducing permanent deformation while cracking becomes a major concern which can be solved by using rubberized asphalt. In the field, gap-graded asphalt with rubberized bitumen showed the best response in terms of skid resistance and noise reduction.

Two of the main problems encountered in flexible pavements are the stripping of coarse aggregates and the formation of rut depth due to increases in the volume of road traffic and heavy vehicle loads, especially in areas where speeds are low. The existence of rut depth also affects the comfort and safety of road users due to the water accumulation on the pavement surface and reducing tire/pavement friction, which can lead to hydroplaning phenomena. In this research, it was proven that the use of fillers of different origins influences the affinity between aggregates and the binder. The effect of an adhesion promoter in the mix design (such as the amine included in cellulosic fiber pellets) was also studied. Several tests were carried out to determine the binder/aggregate adhesiveness, water sensitivity and resistance to permanent deformation, to evaluate the performance of different blends. It was found that the addition of this additive increased 10% of the aggregate surfaces covered with bitumen when compared with the aggregates without this addition. As expected, the water sensitivity tests showed that the mixture with granitic filler had the lowest indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR) value (70%), while the mixtures with limestone filler led to the highest percentages (ranging from 83 to 93%). As for the results of the wheel tracking tests (WTT), it was confirmed that the use of limestone filler translates into an improvement in the performance against the permanent deformation of the asphalt mixtures. The mixture with higher bitumen content and adhesion promoter revealed the best average results.

Mastic asphalt (MA) has been particularly popular in recent years for bridge pavements due to many advantages such as easy application, good waterproofing properties, and high durability. However, the drawback of mastic asphalt in comparison to other asphalt mixtures is its lower resistance to permanent deformation. Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) is often applied to make mastic asphalt resistant to permanent deformation. Practical experience demonstrates that serious failures may occur if MA pavement design and materials selection is not taken into account sufficiently. Therefore in this study, the influence of two parameters: zero shear viscosity (ZSV) of TLA-modified binder and mastic composition described by the filler-binder ratio, on the permanent deformation resistance of the MA mixture was evaluated. The primary purpose of determining the ZSV of the TLA-modified binders was to evaluate the rutting potential of the binders. The permanent deformation (rutting) resistance of the MA mixtures was evaluated based on static and dynamic indentation tests. The optimum content of TLA in the base bitumen and the optimum filler-binder ratio in the MA mixture were obtained based on multiple performance evaluations for modified binder, mastic and MA mixtures, i.e., 20% and 4.0, respectively.

The paper presents the issue of resistance to permanent deformations of bridge pavements placed upon concrete bridge decks. In Europe, bridge asphalt pavement usually consists of a wearing course and a protective layer, which are placed over the insulation (waterproofing). Protective layers of bridge pavement are commonly constructed using low air void content asphalt mixes as this provides the suitable tightness of such layers. Due to increased binder content, asphalt mixes for bridge pavement may have reduced resistance to permanent deformations. The article presents test results of resistance to permanent deformations of asphalt mixes for the protective layers. In order to determine the composition of mixtures with low air void content and resistance to permanent deformation, an experimental design was applied using a new concept of asphalt mix composition. Twenty-seven different asphalt mixture compositions were analyzed. The mixtures varied in terms of binder content, sand content and grit ratio. Resistance to permanent deformation was tested using the laboratory uniaxial cyclic compression method (dynamic load creep). On the basis of experimental results and statistical analysis, the functions of asphalt mixture permanent deformation resistance were established. This enabled a determination of suitable mixture compositions for protective layers for concrete bridge decks.

The interest in minimising fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions among road specialists is increasing. Thus, methods for reducing asphalt concrete mixing and compaction temperatures by a few tens of degrees Celsius without compromising the long-term performance has become a topic of significant interest. This study is focused on the analysis of warm mix asphalt (WMA) prepared with locally available materials in order to determine the suitable technology applicable to the specific traffic and climatic conditions of Romania. WMA was prepared using different warm mix additives (organic additives, chemical additive, and synthetic zeolite) at different mixing and compaction temperatures, and bitumen blends with these additives were analysed by carrying out the dynamic shear rheometer test and evaluating the penetration index. In conclusion it was noted that most additives did not lead to a significant change of bitumen's characteristics, but the organic additive had a big influence on the bitumen's properties. The characteristics of WMA are very similar to those of HMA. The mixing and compaction temperatures could be reduced by approximately 40 °C when WMA was blended with the additives without compromising the performance of the asphalt mixture, compared to hot mix asphalt.

Secondary raw materials consist of production waste or material resulting from recycling processes, currently in large quantities, which can be injected back into the economic system as new raw materials. This study proposes jet grouting waste (JGW) as filler for hot and cold asphalt mixtures applied as base layers of road pavements and investigates the physical and mechanical properties. JGW is derived from soil consolidation performed during underground roadway tunnel construction. The research compares three asphalt mixtures: (a) hot mixture containing limestone aggregate-filler (HMA), (b) HMA containing JGW (HMAJ), (c) cold recycled asphalt mixture containing JGW (CRAJ). Leaching tests of JGW and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) were conducted; the best configurations of the three mixtures were determined by using the volumetric method through gyratory compaction. Three mastics with filler-to-binder ratios reflecting those of the asphalt mixtures were investigated through delta ring and ball test and frequency sweep test at 0.05% stress by using a dynamic shear rheometer. The morphology of each mixture was further investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CRAJ with 28 days of curing time reached the indirect tensile strength (ITS) of HMA (0.73 MPa) within 14 days and, among all studied mixtures, returned the lowest cumulative strain, which was on average 30% lower than that of HMA and HMAJ. The results of this study have shown that the cold alternative mixture, CRAJ, promotes the reuse of two types of waste, RAP and JGW, as it fully meets the reference Italian Technical Standard and ensures good mixture performance in addition to conserving natural resources.
