RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a maladaptive response to chronic stress, particularly prevalent among clinicians. Anesthesiologists are at risk of burnout, but the role of maladaptive traits in their vulnerability to burnout remains understudied. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on data from the Italian Association of Hospital Anesthesiologists, Pain Medicine Specialists, Critical Care, and Emergency (AAROI-EMAC) physicians. The survey included demographic data, burnout assessment using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and subscales (emotional exhaustion, MBI-EE; depersonalization, MBI-DP; personal accomplishment, MBI-PA), and evaluation of personality disorders (PDs) based on DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition) criteria using the assessment of DSM-IV PDs (ADP-IV). We investigated the aggregated scores of maladaptive personality traits as predictor variables of burnout. Subsequently, the components of personality traits were individually assessed. RESULTS: Out of 310 respondents, 300 (96.77%) provided complete information. The maladaptive personality traits global score was associated with the MBI-EE and MBI-DP components. There was a significant negative correlation with the MBI-PA component. Significant positive correlations were found between the MBI-EE subscale and the paranoid (r = 0.42), borderline (r = 0.39), and dependent (r = 0.39) maladaptive personality traits. MBI-DP was significantly associated with the passive-aggressive (r = 0.35), borderline (r = 0.33), and avoidant (r = 0.32) traits. Moreover, MBI-PA was negatively associated with dependent (r = - 0.26) and avoidant (r = - 0.25) maladaptive personality features. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant association between different maladaptive personality traits and the risk of experiencing burnout among anesthesiologists. This underscores the importance of understanding and addressing personality traits in healthcare professionals to promote their well-being and prevent this serious emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion state.

RESUMO

Introduction: Burnout research is limited in Saudi Arabia, particularly among radiographers. Burnout among Saudi radiographers may have a negative impact on the services offered. Objective: This study aims to assess the burnout among radiographers in Medina hospitals. Materials and Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study included 104 radiographers from government and private Medina hospitals. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, which consists of 22 questions, was used to measure the burnout level. The data were evaluated descriptively using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 25), and independent t-tests and analysis of variance were applied to assess group differences and linear regression analysis to evaluate associations between the burnout level and sociodemographic variables (ie sex, age, experience, and department). Results: The emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP) scores were moderate, while the personal accomplishment (PA) score was high, with total scores of 23.53 (9.32), 7.29 (5.95), and 29.70 (1.35), respectively. The DP score was influenced by the participants' experience. Specifically, an experience of 1-5 years yielded a substantially higher burnout score than did an experience of >10 years (p>0.05). Conversely, sex, age, and department did not affect the DP score (p<0.05). Similarly, the EE and PA scores were not influenced by sex, age, experience, or department (p<0.05). Conclusion: Burnout is prevalent among radiographers in Medina hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The EE and DP scores are moderate, while the PA score is high, indicating a suitable work environment. Policymakers should take the required steps to identify the variables contributing to employee burnout and enhance the work environment.

RESUMO

AIM: Many people see nursing as a high-pressure, high-risk profession. Therefore, job burnout among nursing staff has become an important topic of study and has received widespread attention worldwide. This research intended to evaluate the frequency of and variables related with work burnout among nurses in public hospitals in China. DESIGN: Using a multistage random sample procedure, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in the eastern, central and western areas of China. METHODS: The Maslach Inventory-Human Service Survey and demographic information made up the two sections of the questionnaire. Of the 5250 questionnaires sent, 4865 were deemed legitimate, yielding an effective response rate of 92.67%. A linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the variables linked to nursing work burnout. RESULTS: Among the 4865 nurses, women accounted for 97.4% of the survey respondents, most of whom were aged 26-35 years. Results showed that the total scores of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA) were 20.02 ± 12.04, 4.78 ± 5.54 and 34.42 ± 10.32 respectively. 50.7% of subjects obtained high or moderated scores on EE, 32.8% of subjects obtained high or moderated scores on DP and 80.4% of subjects obtained low or moderated scores on PA. Age, department, position, post-establishment, work shift type in recent months, overtime times in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were negatively correlated with EE, and child status, monthly income, working days per week and sleep quality in recent 1 month were positively correlated with it (F = 141.827, P < 0.01, R2 = 0.243). Age, gender, department, post-establishment, overtime hours in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were negatively correlated with DP, and child status and sleep quality in the last 1 month were positively correlated with it (F = 78.794, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.115). Child status, years of nursing work and sleep quality in the last 1 month were negatively correlated with PA, whereas age, position, work shift type in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were positively correlated with it (F = 67.981, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.089).

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Burnout is an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress. We conducted this review to estimate the pooled global prevalence of burnout among the public health workforce. METHODS: We conducted this review as per the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We included only cross-sectional studies reporting outcome estimates among the study population. We included articles published before December 2023. We used a search strategy to systematically select the articles from PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. We assessed the quality of the studies using an adapted version of NIH's study tool assessment for cross-sectional and observational cohort studies. We estimated the pooled proportion using the random-effects model. RESULTS: We included eight studies in our review, covering a sample size of 215,787. The pooled proportion of burnout was 39% (95% CI: 25-53%; p-value: < 0.001). We also identified high heterogeneity among the included studies in our review (I2: 99.67%; p-value: < 0.001). Seven out of the eight studies were of good quality. The pooled proportion of the studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic was 42% (95% CI: 17-66%), whereas for the studies conducted during the non-pandemic period, it was 35% (95% CI: 10-60%). CONCLUSION: In our review, more than one-third of public health workers suffer from burnout, which adversely affects individuals' mental and physical health. Burnout among the public health workforce requires attention to improve the well-being of this group. Multisite studies using standardized definitions are needed for appropriate comparisons and a better understanding of variations in burnout in various subgroups based on sociodemographic characteristics and type of work responsibilities. We must design and implement workplace interventions to cope with burnout and increase well-being. LIMITATIONS: Due to the limited research on burnout among public health workers, we could not perform a subgroup analysis on various factors that could have contributed to burnout.

RESUMO

Background: Burnout Syndrome constitutes a critical concern in healthcare, particularly among practitioners operating in high-stress, critical care settings. Understanding the multifaceted factors contributing to burnout in this context is pivotal for devising effective interventions and promoting the well-being of critical care professionals. Objective: To investigate the prevalence, contributing factors, and potential interventions related to Burnout Syndrome among critical care health providers in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional research design was employed, gathering data from a sample of critical care health providers, including medical practitioners. A self-administered structured electronic questionnaire was used, incorporating the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) with its three subscales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The target population was male and female critical care health providers over 18 years age, most participants lies between 25 years to 34 years. Results: Statistical analysis shows significant disparities in response distribution (p<0.05), highlighting the importance of understanding encounters with emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. The Durbin-Watson statistic indicated limited autocorrelation, and collinearity tolerance values suggested nominal intercorrelations among predictors. A significant positive correlation was found between the "Depersonalization Loss of Empathy MBI" factor and the outcome variables, indicating complex relationships between emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. Conclusion: The study highlights the multifaceted nature of burnout, revealing intricate relationships between emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. These findings collectively form an important foundation for future guidelines and interventions to enhance the well-being of healthcare professionals.

RESUMO

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Burnout, stemming from chronic work stress, is a significant issue in the medical field, especially among radiologists. It leads to compromised patient care and reduced job satisfaction. Addressing burnout in radiology is essential for the well-being of radiologists and, in turn, for improving patient care. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and dimensions of burnout among radiology trainees (RTs) and practicing radiologists (PRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with established guidelines. The search encompassed PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to June 20, 2023. Eligible studies that assessed the rate of burnout syndrome and/or its subscales, including depersonalization (DP), emotional exhaustion (EE), and personal accomplishment (PA), among RTs and/or PRs using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), were included. Relevant data were extracted and analyzed using R and STATA. RESULTS: Among the 22 included studies, the pooled rates of positive MBI subscales for RTs and PRs were as follows: 54.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 43.8%-65.1%, I2 = 95.2%) for DP, 57.2% (95% CI: 48.7%-65.4%, I2 = 92.9%) for EE, and 38.6% (95% CI: 27%-51.7%, I2 = 95.5%) for low PA. The pooled rate indicating the presence of at least one positive MBI subscale was 82.9% (95% CI: 79.2%-86.1%, I2 = 57.4%). For two or more positive MBI subscales, the pooled rate was 55.5% (95% CI: 49.7%-61.3%, I2 = 60.2%), and for three positive MBI subscales, it was 16.7% (95% CI: 11.7%-23.3%, I2 = 82.7%). CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes a notable prevalence of burnout in the radiology specialty, with 8 of 10 individuals exhibiting positive results in at least one MBI subscale. This highlights the urgent need for interventions and support systems to protect the well-being of both trainees and practitioners and uphold the quality of patient care.

RESUMO

Objective: A wide range in prevalence rates of burnout among general practitioners (GPs) has been reported in various regions, with an increasing trend. This nationwide cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence and associated determinants of burnout in Czech GPs. Methods: 1000 randomly selected physicians from the Czech Society of General Practitioners (through a pseudorandom number generator) were emailed an online survey based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey. Data collection was performed between January and February 2023. Results: 331 questionnaires were obtained (227 females and 104 males, mean age - 49.9 years, the mean number of registered patients - 1951). 21.8 % of GPs scored a high level of burnout in all three of its dimensions and 23.9 % in no dimension at all. The most prevalent dimension was reduced personal accomplishment (PA, 56.2 %) followed by emotional exhaustion (EE, 50.2 %) and depersonalization (DP, 40.5 %). Reaching burnout in all three dimensions was significantly more frequent in males and in GPs registering a number of patients above the median. Increasing age and years of practice were protective factors for DP but risk factors for reduced PA. Employed GPs had lower EE scores than GP practice owners. The respondents' basic characteristics reflected their presence among Czech GPs, which testifies against selection bias. Conclusions: The high rate of burnout (∼22 %) should be addressed by promoting personal resources along with the perception of the importance of GPs in society. A sufficiently dense network of GPs should allow them to register a lower number of patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Burnout remains a crucial occupational health challenge to healthcare professionals given its immediate and remote harmful effects. Doctors and nurses are highly susceptible to burnout due to the essence and demands of their services. The study aimed to determine and compare the prevalence of burnout among doctors and nurses working at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Southern Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative, cross-sectional study of 553 doctors and nurses was conducted using a stratified random sampling technique. A pretested, self-administered MBI - Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel - MBI-HSS (MP) was used for data collection and analysis using IBM Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) software version 23. The Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were applied with a statistical significance level set at α<0.05. RESULTS: The mean ages for doctors and nurses were 37.1 ± 5.3 and 39.0 ± 9.2 respectively (p=0.003). Burnout prevalence among doctors was 9.7% compared to 5.5% among nurses (p =0.062). Out of 553 respondents, 247 (46.7%) had high emotional exhaustion (EE), 70 (12.7%) had high depersonalization (DP), and 342 (61.9%) had low personal accomplishments (PA). Furthermore, 132 (47.3%) doctors had high EE, 43 (15.4%) had high DP and 159 (57%) had low PA. While 115 (42%) nurses had high EE, 27 (9.9%) had high DP and 183 (66.8%) had a low PA (p=0.041). Excessive workload (p=0.042) and lengthy years in a workplace position (p=0.002) were significantly associated with burnout among doctors compared to family size (p=0.045) and workplace support or community (p=0.005) among nurses. CONCLUSION: The study found burnout prevalence to be higher among doctors than nurses. Work-related factors contributed significantly to burnout development. Recreating and/or modifying workplace environments is essential to mitigating the adverse effects of burnout among healthcare workers.

A cross-sectional study was conducted between March and August 2021; an electronic survey was administered to all dermatology residents (n=79) in all centers with the Saudi Board Dermatology Training Program in the western, eastern and southern regions. Participation was voluntary, and written informed consent was obtained before the study. The survey was completed by 70 dermatology residents, for an 88.61% response rate. All the participants were aware of the study's aims, and their informed consent was obtained. The study design complied with the Declaration of Helsinki ethical standards and was approved by the Institutional Review Board at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Saudi Arabia. A total of 70 respondents completed the questionnaire. High emotional exhaustion (EE) was present in 47.1% of respondents, low personal accomplishment (PA) was present in 65.7%, and high depersonalization (DP) was the least prevalent (24.3%) across all burnout dimensions of dermatology residents. Overall burnout was present in 21.4% of the dermatology residents. Multivariate analysis showed that the odds of EE were significantly lower in males than females [odds ratio (OR)=0.2, P=0.016] and the higher number of patients seen per clinic (OR=1.09, P=0.032) was associated with higher odds of having a high risk of EE, while higher satisfaction with work-life balance was associated with lower odds of a high risk of EE (OR=0.47, P=0.005). A higher number of study hours/week was associated with lower odds of low PA (OR=0.95, P=0.02). Similarly, higher satisfaction with career was associated with lower odds of low PA (OR=0.35, P=0.042). Multivariate analysis showed that only exercise (OR=0.21, P=0.05) and satisfaction with work-life balance (OR=0.42, P=0.008) were associated with a lower risk of burnout. Our study adds the burnout rates among dermatology residents in Saudi Arabia, in addition to possible risk factors that can predict burnout, to the literature. These findings can be applied to improve training programs and reduce the burnout rate among residents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Emergency medicine (EM) settings are very stressful, given the high workload, intense working environment, and prolonged working time. In turn, the rate of burnout and its three domains have been increasingly reported among healthcare workers (HCWs). Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to determine the prevalence and risk factors of burnout among EM HCWs. METHODS: Six databases were searched in February 2023, yielding 29 articles (16,619 EM HCWs) reporting burnout or its three domains (emotional exhaustion "EE", depersonalization "DP", and personal accomplishment "PA"). The primary outcome was the prevalence of burnout and its domains, while secondary outcomes included the risk factors of high burnout, EE, DP, or low PA. Burnout rates were pooled across studies using STATA software. The prevalence was measured using the pooled effect size (ES), and the random-effects model was used when heterogeneity was encountered; otherwise, the fixed-effects model was used. RESULTS: The prevalence of overall burnout was high (43%), with 35% of EM HCWs having a high risk of burnout. Meanwhile, 39%, 43%, and 36% of EM workers reported having high levels of EE and DP and low levels of PA, respectively. Country-specific changes in the rate of burnout were observed. The rate of high burnout, high EE, high DP, and low PA was higher during the COVID-19 pandemic as compared to the pre-pandemic period. The type of profession (nurses, physicians, residents, etc.) played a significant role in modifying the rate of burnout and its domains. However, gender was not a significant determinant of high burnout or its domains among EM workers. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout is a prevalent problem in emergency medicine practice, affecting all workers. As residents progress through their training years, their likelihood of experiencing burnout intensifies. Nurses are most affected by this problem, followed by physicians. Country-associated differences in burnout and its domains are evident.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies are available on physician burnout and job satisfaction (JS) in relation to the specific income structure of the country of residence. However, no studies exist that investigate burnout of immigrated physicians taking into account the income structure of their country of origin (IS-COO) as well as duration of immigration. OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of IS-COO on JS, income satisfaction, and critical burnout thresholds in the domains of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduction in personal accomplishment (RPA) among urologists with a migrant background working at German hospitals. METHODS: A questionnaire (Survey-Monkey®/101-items) was conducted among urologists of German hospitals with a migrant background. The online questionnaire was open for study participation from 1 August to 31 October 2020. The study included all physicians with a migration background who were born in a country other than Germany and were currently employed in a German department of urology. Physician burnout (Maslach-Burnout-Inventory) and JS were assessed using validated instruments. The influence of IS-COO and different covariates on the designated endpoints was tested using multivariate-models. RESULTS: 96 urologists with a median stay in Germany of 7 years participated and were stratified according to low (LIC/41.7%), middle (MIC/36.5%) and high (HIC/21.9%) income based on IS-COO. No significant influence of IS-COO on critical thresholds in each burnout domain could be found. Of urologists from LIC, MIC and HIC, 42%, 59% and 57%, respectively, showed rather or extreme JS (p = .446). There was also no significant difference between groups in income satisfaction (p = .838). However, in multivariate-models, duration of stay in Germany (≥7 vs. <7 years) had significant effects on DP (OR: 0.28, p = .038) and RPA (OR: 0.09, p = .014), but not on EE and JS. CONCLUSION: IS-COO has no impact on burnout and JS among urologists who immigrated to Germany. Similarly, income satisfaction in the country of residence is not influenced by IS-COO.

Objective: to determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome in Nursing professionals working at the hospital care area in the Ciénaga district, Magdalena (Colombia).Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study with 64 workers from the Nursing area, who answered the Maslach Burnout Inventory with its three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. The questionnaire was self-administered on-line. Descriptive statistics was conducted, and the non-parametric Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient was applied to calculate the correlation between sociodemographic and professional variables, and the three burnout dimensions. Results: of the 64 participants studied, 100% were female, with higher participation in ages from 25 to 31 years (28.1%); 46,9% were single, the vast majority had a service contract (90.6%) and 64.1% had a technician level of education. The results were that 71.9% presented medium-low emotional exhaustion, 73.4% reported a low level of depersonalization, and practically all of them (93.8%) had a low level of personal achievement, with none presenting a high level. There was a low positive correlation (Rho= 0.322; p= 0.021) between age and depersonalization. Conclusions: burnout levels in Nursing professionals are medium-low; but the low level of personal achievement among nurses stands out. Even though a weak positive correlation was found between age and depersonalization, the low number of participants suggests that this should be carefully interpreted, and further research on the matter is required.(AU)

RESUMO

COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented strain on healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of burnout in hospital employees during a prolonged pandemic-induced burden on healthcare systems. An online survey among employees of a Czech and Slovak university hospital was conducted between November 2021 and January 2022, approximately when the incidence rates peaked in both countries. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey was applied. We obtained 807 completed questionnaires (75.1% from Czech employees, 91.2% from HCWs, 76.2% from women; mean age of 42.1 ± 11 years). Burnout in emotional exhaustion (EE) was found in 53.2%, depersonalization (DP) in 33%, and personal accomplishment (PA) in 47.8% of respondents. In total, 148 (18.3%) participants showed burnout in all dimensions, 184 (22.8%) in two, and 269 (33.3%) in at least one dimension. Burnout in EE and DP (65% and 43.7%) prevailed in physicians compared to other HCWs (48.6% and 28.8%). Respondents from COVID-19-dedicated units achieved burnout in the EE and DP dimensions with higher rates than non-frontline HCWs (58.1% and 40.9% vs. 49.9% and 27.7%). Almost two years of the previous overloading of healthcare services, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in the relatively high prevalence of burnout in HCWs, especially in physicians and frontline HCWs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The authors sought to identify the prevalence of burnout in oral medicine (OM) and orofacial pain (OFP) residents and investigate potential contributing factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted. An anonymous 22-item online survey was emailed to the residents of all Commission on Dental Accreditation-accredited OM and OFP residency programs in the United States. Abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory was included to gauge the following details of burnout: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment. Questions also addressed the impact of residency program characteristics, work-life balance, and possible discrimination or abuse on burnout. RESULTS: Six OM and 12 OFP programs (72 residents) were contacted, and 46 residents responded (response rate, 64%). Overall prevalence of burnout was 35% (29% in OM residents, 40% in OFP residents). High EE burnout was noted in 57% of residents, high DP burnout in 11% of residents, and high personal accomplishment burnout in 59% of residents. Working for fewer than 40 hours per week was significantly associated with low DP burnout (P < .05). Moderate to high DP burnout was more prevalent in men and unmarried residents (whether in a relationship or not) were more likely to experience moderate to high EE burnout (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Burnout among OM and OFP residents is an emerging concern due to its detrimental effect on the physical and mental well-being of the residents. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to report burnout prevalence in the 2 most recent dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association in 2020. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Early detection of signs of burnout among residents would allow program faculty and administrators to provide required support and resources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Student burnout can be defined as the negative reactions that occur because of prolonged academic stress, which can result in emotional exhaustion/exhaustion (EE/EX), depersonalization/cynicism, and diminished personal accomplishment/reduced academic efficacy (DPA/RAE). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review is to determine if burnout is prevalent in oral health students (OHS); identify the factors that are shown to be predicators of burnout in OHS; determine the preventive and coping strategies OHS used to mitigate the effects of burnout; and identify gaps in the literature on burnout in OHS. METHODS: A systematic search was completed using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, EBSCO, and ERIC. The returns were screened by all members of the team using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the studies that met the criteria were appraised. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Eighteen studies assessed burnout in OHS, 15 studied dental students, 2 studied dental hygiene students, and 1 studied both. Findings concerning the prevalence of burnout varied greatly across the literature with anywhere between 7% and 70.4% of OHS reporting suffering from burnout syndrome. The most prevalent scale of burnout in OHS was EE/EX with 10%-66.2% of OHS reporting high levels. Stressors for OHS were years of study, clinical components, and demanding academic courses. Early identification and interventions are keys to prevent the negative consequences of burnout. CONCLUSION: Burnout in OHS can affect their mental health, empathy toward patients, and professional conduct. Therefore, educating students and faculty on the signs and symptoms of burnout is key in preventing detrimental effects that may inhibit their academic success.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the levels of nurses' organizational citizenship behaviour and the associations between job burnout and ethical climate with organizational citizenship behaviour. BACKGROUND: Organizational citizenship behaviour improves adverse outcomes led by nursing shortage. However, the associations between three dimensions of job burnout and organizational citizenship behaviour are inconsistent, and little is known about whether ethical climate is related to organizational citizenship behaviour in nurses. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1157 nurses were selected using convenience sampling from April to October 2019. Self-report surveys assessed nurses' organizational citizenship behaviour, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment and perceptions of ethical climate. RESULTS: Mean organizational citizenship behaviour was high among nurses. The regression model showed that job burnout and ethical climate explained an additional 38.6% of the variance in organizational citizenship behaviour over and above sociodemographic factors, with 44.9% of the total variance. CONCLUSION: Nurses' organizational citizenship behaviour was at a relatively high level. Depersonalization was negatively associated with organizational citizenship behaviour while personal accomplishment and ethical climate were positively related to organizational citizenship behaviour. Therefore, nurse leaders are encouraged to take measures to help nurses reduce job burnout and create a favourable ethical climate for increasing nurses' organizational citizenship behaviour.

RESUMO

AIM: This study determined the prevalence and key determinants of burnout among nurses and midwives in Kumasi, Ghana. DESIGN: Hospital-based cross-sectional study. METHOD: A questionnaire was used to obtain data from 391 nurses and midwives at a tertiary hospital in Kumasi, Ghana using simple random sampling. RESULTS: About 84.4% of the participants were females. The majority of the study participants experienced low burnout for all dimensions (58% in emotional exhaustion, 55.5% poor personal accomplishment and 38.3% depersonalization). Multiple regression analysis revealed that high emotional exhaustion was independently predicted by post-graduate education (ß = 6.42, p = .003), lack of support from management (ß = 2.07, p = .024), dislike for leadership style, (ß = 3.54, p < .001) and inadequate number of staff (ß = 2.93, p = .005). Age (ß = 0.35, p = .004), lack of support from management (ß = 1.60, p = .012), and inadequate number of staff (ß = 1.49, p = .034) independently predicted high depersonalisation. Female sex (ß = 4.36, p < .001) and years of practice (ß = -0.26, p < .001) independently predicted low personal accomplishment.
