RESUMO

The equine pinworm could become an increasingly common problem, as there are reports of failure in the control of this parasite. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ivermectin (IVM) and IVM combined with pyrantel pamoate (PYR). Thirteen parasitological positive equines were treated with oral IVM (200 µg/kg) and therapeutic efficacy, clinical recovery and the egg reappearance period (ERP) were evaluated. In cases for which ERP was shorter than the pre-patent period (PPP), a second treatment was performed with IVM (200 µg/kg) + PYR (6.6 mg/kg), followed by the same evaluation criteria described above. Therapeutic efficacy was 100% with IVM + PYR and 53.84% with IVM. The mean ERP was shorter than the PPP with both formulations, 77.55 days with IVM + PYR and 50 days with IVM. The presence of egg mass was always associated with a least one clinical sign. The reduction in the number of clinical signs per animal from Day 0 to Day 30 was greater in equines treated with IVM + PYR compared to those treated with IVM alone. The animals treated with IVM were 4.5-fold more likely to present clinical signs 30 days after treatment than those treated with IVM+PYR. A negative correlation was found between ERP and the number of clinical signs at 30 days in the animals treated with IVM. This clinical and parasitological evaluation demonstrated that the combination of IVM+PYR was more effective than IVM alone to control Oxyuris equi.

RESUMO

Wellcomia species (Oxyuridae, Syphaciinae) parasitise several families of rodents from Africa, Asia and America with diverse ecological characteristics. A new species of Wellcomia is described based on specimens obtained from the plains viscacha Lagostomus maximus (Chinchillidae) from Argentina. The description includes morphometric and ecological aspects and an emended diagnosis of the genus Wellcomia. In addition, a molecular characterisation (18S rRNA) and an exploratory analysis of the genetic distances of the species included in this genus are provided. The new species, Wellcomia hugoti n. sp., differs from other species of the genus in the morphology of the cephalic plate, the ventral rugose area in males and the vulva in females. The new species showed a low prevalence (7.7%) and a high mean abundance (73.8). The genetic distances detected do not allow a comprehensive assessment of the monophyly of the genus. This is the seventh record of this genus in rodents from the Americas, the second in rodents from Argentina and the first record for the family Chinchillidae.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to search for ancient parasites in abdominal content and coprolites from Bolivian mummies. MATERIALS: Twelve mummified individuals from the Andean highlands, housed at the National Museum of Archaeology (MUNARQ) in La Paz, Bolivia. METHODS: Microscopic analysis of rehydrated samples (coprolites and abdominal content), following Lutz's spontaneous sedimentation technique. RESULTS: Eggs of Enterobius vermicularis were identified in coprolites from one mummy, and capillariid eggs in the organic abdominal content from another individual. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first evidence of ancient intestinal parasites in Bolivian mummies. SIGNIFICANCE: This pioneering study focused on the search of ancient intestinal parasites in human remains of the Bolivian Andes and contributes to greater knowledge of paleoparasitology in South America. LIMITATIONS: All mummies in the MUNARQ belonged to the Andean Bolivian highlands (post-Tiwanaku era or Late Intermediate Period), although the exact provenance of the material and the associated contexts are not well recorded. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH: Considering the great number of well-known archaeological sites and other unexplored sites in Bolivia, in addition to large collections in museums, further paleopathological and paleoparasitological molecular studies in mummies and skeletons are called for.

RESUMO

Genital tract bleeding in prepubertal girls is a rare clinical condition, which can occur for multiple reasons. It frequently generates anxiety in the family and in health care professionals. A thorough anamnesis and careful genital inspection can give important diagnostic hints; however, there are cases in which the cause remains doubtful and a complete gynecological evaluation (including cultures and vaginoscopy) is necessary. Therefore, the attending physician should always consider less frequent diagnoses in order to perform the necessary studies in a sequential and rational manner. We present the case of a preschool girl with vaginal bleeding due to pinworm endometritis, which, to our knowledge, has never been reported before as a cause of genital bleeding in prepubertal girls.

RESUMO

There is often the risk of confusing pollen grains with helminth eggs from archaeological sites. Thousands to millions of pollen grains can be recovered from archaeological burial sediments that represent past ritual, medication and environment. Some pollen grain types can be similar to parasite eggs. Such a confusion is represented by the diagnosis of enterobiasis in ancient Iran. The authors of this study confused a joint-pine (Ephedra spp.) pollen grain with a pinworm egg. This paper describes the specific Ephedra pollen morphology that can be confused with pinworm eggs.

RESUMO

The invasion of new regions by exotic pests has been more than ever a critical issue that warrants coordinated international actions to manage established populations and prevent further spreading. Invasive insects can undermine the ecological equilibrium of both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Moreover, increasing temperatures due to climatic change exacerbate this problem by allowing pests to further reach regions previously considered unsuitable. The tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera) is an exotic pest native to Peru that has spread beyond Neotropical America. In Europe, its occurrence was reported in Spain in 2006, and thereafter, it has spread throughout the Mediterranean Basin and further into Africa and part of Asia. While T. absoluta can cause losses to tomato production all over the globe, the differences in each invaded region (e.g., climate, vegetation) may affect its population dynamics and, consequently, management protocols. Therefore, the main intent of this forum paper is to explore how European growers and researchers are dealing with T. absoluta in the Mediterranean area. As for many other invasive pests, the best approach has been the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM). Specifically, the integration of biological control agents (e.g., mirid predators and egg parasitoids), microbial insecticides (i.e., Bacillus thuringiensis), selective chemical insecticides, and sex pheromone-based control has proven adequate, especially in tomato greenhouses. Nonetheless, some of the challenges ahead include the development of resistant tomato cultivars, the management of wild vegetation and companion plants to optimize the conservation of natural enemies and their effectiveness at the crop level, the management of insecticide resistance, and the improvement of sex pheromone-based tactics.

RESUMO

Two new species of Trypanoxyuris are described from the intestine of free-ranging howler monkeys in Mexico, Trypanoxyuris multilabiatus n. sp. from the mantled howler Alouatta palliata, and Trypanoxyuris pigrae n. sp. from the black howler Alouatta pigra. An integrative taxonomic approach is followed, where conspicuous morphological traits and phylogenetic trees based on DNA sequences are used to test the validity of the two new species. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene, and the nuclear ribosomal 18S and 28S rRNA genes were used for evolutionary analyses, with the concatenated dataset of all three genes used for maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses. The two new species of pinworms from howler monkeys were morphologically distinct and formed reciprocally monophyletic lineages in molecular phylogenetic trees. The three species from howler monkeys, T. multilabiatus n. sp., T. pigrae n. sp., and Trypanoxyuris minutus, formed a monophyletic group with high bootstrap and posterior probability support values. Phylogenetic patterns inferred from sequence data support the hypothesis of a close evolutionary association between these primate hosts and their pinworm parasites. The results suggest that the diversity of pinworm parasites from Neotropical primates might be underestimated.

RESUMO

Two species of pinworms, Trypanoxyuris atelis and Trypanoxyuris atelophora were collected from the black-handed spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) in several localities across southeastern Mexico, representing the first record for both species in Mexican primates. Identification of pinworm species was based on morphological and molecular data. These pinworms are distinguished from other congeners, and from each other, by the buccal structure, the lateral alae, and the morphology of the oesophagus. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene placed T. atelis as the sister species of Trypanoxyuris minutus, a parasite of the howler monkey Alouatta palliata, and T. atelophora as the sister species of T. microon, a parasite of the night monkey, Aotus azarae. These relationships were supported with high posterior probability values by Bayesian inference. Comparisons of additional pinworm taxa from Neotropical primates are needed to assess oxyurid diversity, and to better understand the evolutionary relationships among these nematodes and their primate hosts.

RESUMO

In this study, we carried out three bioassays with nine used insecticides in tomato crops to identify their efficiency against tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta, the physiological selectivity and the activity reduction of insecticides by three rain regimes to predatory wasps Protonectarina sylveirae and Polybia scutellaris. We assessed the mortality caused by the recommended doses of abamectin, beta-cyfluthrin, cartap, chlorfenapyr, etofenprox, methamidophos, permethrin, phenthoate and spinosad to T. absoluta and wasps at the moment of application. In addition, we evaluated the wasp mortality due to the insecticides for 30 days on plants that did not receive rain and on plants that received 4 or 125 mm of rain. Spinosad, cartap, chlorfenapyr, phenthoate, abamectin and methamidophos caused mortality higher than 90% to T. absoluta, whereas the pyrethroids beta-cyfluthrin, etofenprox and permethrin caused mortality between 8.5% and 46.25%. At the moment of application, all the insecticides were highly toxic to the wasps, causing mortality higher than 80%. In the absence of rain, all the insecticides continued to cause high mortality to the wasps for 30 days after the application. The toxicity of spinosad and methamidophos on both wasp species; beta-cyfluthrin on P. sylveirae and chlorfenapyr and abamectin on P. scutellaris, decreased when the plants received 4 mm of rain. In contrast, the other insecticides only showed reduced toxicity on the wasps when the plants received 125 mm of rain.

INTRODUCTION: Estrongyloides is a parasitic disease caused by Enterobius vermicularis, Humans are hosts only to this parasite. In Chile, there are an underestimated prevalence due to its low notification, however, it causes many clinical entities as sleep disorder, nasal mucosal damage, vulvovaginitis, salpingitis, oophoritis, pelvic inflammatory disease and even peritonitis due to rupture of infested intestinal loop. CASE REPORT: A 33 years old admitted to the emergency department of Hospital El Pino with clinical manifestations compatible with acute appendicitis. Appendectomy was performed, operative findings suggested an ill-defined tumor in fallopian tube, interpreted as ectopic pregnancy. Then underwent unilateral salpingectomy after pathological examination fallopian tube salpingeal was diagnosed. DISCUSSION: Given the high prevalence and the fact that mimic acute appendicitis it´s a significant part of the differential diagnosis for acute abdomen.

RESUMO

Insecticide plants are an important tool among the new alternatives for pest control in IPM systems because they reduce the use of synthetic insecticides, preserving human health and the environment. We investigated the effects of aqueous extracts of Melia azedarach leaves and Azadirachta indica seeds and three tomato genotypes, 'Santa Clara', 'IPA-5' - Solanum lycopersicum (= Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), and LA444-1 - S. peruvianum (= L. peruvianum), on the development, reproduction and longevity of the tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), under laboratory conditions. The trials were set up in a completely randomized design, with nine treatments [three genotypes x two extracts (M. azedarach and A. indica) and control]. The replication consisted on five tubes, each with three newly hatched larvae, totalizing 90 individuals per treatment. The larvae were fed with tomato leaves treated with aqueous extracts at 0.1 percent concentration or distilled water (control) and daily observed until adults' emergence. Larval and pupal development and mortality, pupal weight, longevity and fecundity were evaluated. The accession LA444-1 negatively affected the development and reproduction of T. absoluta; the tomato pinworm had similar development and reproduction on 'IPA-5' and 'Santa Clara' (the susceptible control). The association of resistant tomato genotypes and extracts of M. azedarach leaves and neem seeds did not result in synergistic or antagonistic effects on T. absoluta.

Selection for high foliar levels of allelochemicals has been proposed as a suitable strategy for breeding tomatoes for arthropod pest resistance. In the Lycopersicon pennellii (Correll) D'Arcy accession LA-716, acylsugars exsudated by type IV glandular trichomes present in all aerial parts of the plant reportedly mediate resistance to arthropod pests. This paper intended to study the levels of resistance to two arthropod pests, the South American tomato pinworm (Tuta absoluta) and spider mites (Tetranychus evansi) in tomato genotypes selected solely on the basis of their foliar acylsugar contents. Eleven plants with contrasting acylsugar contents were selected from population F3BC2 derived from the interespecific cross Lycopersicon esculentum 'TOM-584'x Lycopersicon pennellii 'LA-716'. These genotypes were used in tests for resistance/ repellence to the arthropod pests, along with parental checks TOM-584 and LA-716. In Tetranychus spp. mite repellence tests, plants selected for high acylsugar contents behaved similarly to the resistant parent LA-716. Negative and significative correlations between acylsugar contents and distances travelled by the mites onto the leaflet surface indicated an association between the allelochemical and the levels of mite repellence. In the assay with the South American pinworm, these genotypes were evaluated for leaflet lesion type and overall plant damage. The high acylsugar genotypes had good levels of insect resistance, similar to those found in LA-716. In all the evaluation date, acylsugars levels were highly and negatively correlated with pinworm damage. The results indicated that selection for high acylsugar contents was effective in increasing the levels of arthropod resistance of tomato genotypes.

RESUMO

The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is one of the most important tomato pests in Brazil and it has been controlled mainly by insecticides, which may be undesirable because of economical and environmental concerns. These problems can be minimized with alternative control tactics, such as the use of the resistant varieties. However, there is a lack of studies on alternative tactics to control T. absoluta. To obtain information on the insect-plant interactions, the number of instars of T. absoluta on two tomato genotypes: Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum (PI 134417 - resistant) and L. esculentum (`Santa Clara' - susceptible) were determined. The experiment was carried out in climatic chambers, using two temperatures the 26 ± 0,5 and 30 ± 0,5ºC. Neonate larvae were fed with leaves of each genotype. Fifteen larvae of each treatment were removed daily to measure the width of the cephalic capsule. The development of the insect followed the Dyar's rule and four larval instars were found in all treatments.

Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) larvae were fed on tomato leaves Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum (PI 134417, resistant) and L. esculentum (cv. Santa Clara, susceptible) in order to obtain different instar larvae. Bioassays with tomato leaves of both genotypes untreated and treated with Beauveria bassiana (Bb) were conducted for each larval instar. Daily mortality was evaluated until the end of the larval phase. Feeding on PI 134417 reduced the larval survival of T. absoluta. When Bb was applied to the two genotypes of Lycopersicon, mortality occurred in all T. absoluta instars. Application of Bb on tomato leaves resulted synergistic or additive effects with the resistant genotype on larval survival. These effects depended on the instar the larvae fed on Bb-treated leaves.

The effect of aqueous extracts of Melia azedarach L. on the development of the tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) was investigated under laboratory conditions. After hatching, the larvae were fed on tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum, cv. Santa Clara) treated with chinaberry's extracts. The larval and pupal development and mortality and pupal weight were evaluated. Firstly, the trials were carried out with three different concentrations of leaf extracts (0.1, 1.0 e 5.0 percent), in order to determine the most appropriate one for bioactivity studies. Later, the aqueous extracts of different parts of M. azedarach were compared using the selected concentration (0.1 percent). The leaf extract was the most effective for tomato pinworm bioactivity studies, followed by raw fruits, branches and ripe fruits.

The objective of this study was to survey the possible alterations on the development of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) larvae fed on leaves of Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum, PI 134417 - resistant to this insect and L. esculentum, 'Santa Clara' - susceptible, treated with formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk). In order to obtain larvae in the different instars used in these experiments, neonate larvae were reared on the tested Lycopersicon plants until the desired instar. For each larval ages (unfed neonate, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars), were made a separate bioassays in which larvae fed on tomato leaves of the two genotypes + Btk. Larval developmental time was delayed and larval survival was reduced by both resistant tomato and Btk treatment. There was a significant interaction between these treatments for larval development time when 3rd instar larvae fed on Btk-treated leaves and for larval survival, when 4th instar larvae fed on Btk-treated leaves. The pupal weight was affected more drastically by the genotype that for the pathogen. The application of Btk on tomato genotypes insect resistant/susceptible increased the efficiency of the control of T. absoluta wich depended on the age of larvae and was larger in the first two instares.

The tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) is one of the main tomato pests in Brazil. With the objective of obtaining an efficient and not pollutant method of control, the activity of aqueous extracts of Trichilia pallida Swartz leaves and twigs on this pest was studied associated to the tomato cultivars Santa Clara and IPA-5. The development of the insect was observed on leaves of each cultivar, previously treated with extracts at 1% of concentration. Length and viability of larval and pupal stages and pupal weight were evaluated. The larval period of the insect was more prolonged on 'IPA-5' and, when associated with leaf and twig extracts, reduced pupal viability. Leaf and twig extracts also prolonged the larval stage in 'Santa Clara'. The leaf extract affected more negatively the insect development than the twig extract, reducing larval viability on both cultivars.

The effect of aqueous extracts of Trichilia pallida leaves and twigs on the development and oviposition of Tuta absoluta was evaluated. Larvae of T. absoluta were fed with tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum, cv. Santa Clara) previously treated with extracts at concentrations of 0.1; 1.0 and 5.0%. The effects of the leaf extracts at 1.0 and 5.0% were evaluated on eggs of this pest. Free-choice non-preference tests for oviposition were also conducted with treated and non-treated tomato leaves with the extract at concentration of 5.0%. Leaf and twig extracts affect the insect development mainly at the larval stage, increasing the length and reducing viability of this stage. The activity of the leaf extract is greater than that of the twig extract with the reduction of larval viability to approximately 20% at concentration of 1.0%. No ovicidal activity was detected with T. pallida leaf extract at 5.0%, however, the treated substract can become less attractive for oviposition.
