RESUMO

In small-breed dogs with concurrent cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) and medial patellar luxation (MPL), correcting both disorders is are essential for restoring normal gait. However, the previously described surgical treatment, using two osteotomy technique, poses a high risk of fracture and instability. Addressing CCLR and MPL with a single osteotomy and implant was considered superior to the conventional method. Therefore, a pre-contoured modified tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (PCM-TPLO) plate facilitating medial shifting of the proximal tibia was developed. We compared postoperative alignment and strength between this novel plate group and a conventional tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) plate group using eight small-breed dog cadavers each. Additionally, we investigated the potential of the novel plate as an alternative to tibial tuberosity transposition. Postoperative alignment and strength were assessed through radiographs and mechanical testing. Measurements including tibial plateau angle, mechanical medial proximal tibial angle, and number of screws within the joint were also analyzed. There were no significant differences in all measured parameters. For the novel plate, the medial displacement ratio of the proximal tibia was confirmed to be approximately 30%, and the result was thought to be appropriate. These findings suggest that the PCM-TPLO plate could be a promising alternative for treating concurrent CCLR and MPL in small-breed dogs.

RESUMO

Heavy metals present in aquatic ecosystems constitute a significant threat to both the environment and human health. In this study, we analyzed various heavy metals (As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Cd, Pb and Sb) using extensive surface water samples collected from the Tibetan Plateau in 2021 and 2023. Results showed that downstream water samples exhibited higher content (mean 12.6 µg/L) of heavy metals compared to those from the glacier basins. It is noteworthy that heavy metal content varied significantly both in the glacier basin and downstream (4.6-29.1 µg/L and 7.8-55.2 µg/L, respectively). However, elevated concentrations at certain sites (e.g., Saga County and Dangque Zangbu River) were primarily attributed to the disproportionate contribution of individual heavy metals, possibly stemming from specific human activities or natural conditions. In the glacier basin, only Cr exhibited a decreasing trend in enrich factors (EF) with increasing Sc concentration, whereas, in the downstream areas, most elements displayed a declining trend. Furthermore, apart from a few sampling sites, heavy metal concentrations in the glacier basin remained relatively balanced, suggesting that these metals predominantly originate from natural sources. The values of potential ecological risk for an individual element (Eri) and potential ecological risk index (PER) indicate that the ecological and human risks associated with almost heavy metals (except As) in the aquatic ecosystem are minimal. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems pose a significant threat to ecological and human health. Due to delicate ecological balance of the Tibetan Plateau and its critical role as a water resource, we analyzed various heavy metals (As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Cd, Pb and Sb) concentrations and EF in land surface river water, to find out the pollution levels and possible sources of heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystems. The results of risk assessment showed that the prevention and management of arsenic in Tibetan Plateau needs attention, but most heavy metals pose no threaten to ecological and human health.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: With over 100,000 procedures completed per year, hip and knee arthroplasty are two of the most common surgical procedures performed in Canada. There has been literature indicating that patient reported outcome measures (PROM) will start to plateau between six and 12 months. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the trajectory of PROMs following total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA), as well as assess the impact of any potential confounders on this trajectory. The central research question was: At what point do PROMS plateau among patients that undergo elective THA and TKA? METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of data from a prospective database. Patients were eligible if they had undergone an elective, primary THA/TKA with Oxford Scores recorded pre-operatively, and at least at two of the following four time points: six weeks, six months, one year, and two years. RESULTS: Mean pre-operative Oxford scores were 18.0 (7.8) for THA, and 20.1 (7.5) for TKA. For both THA and TKA, there were statistically significant interval improvements in Oxford scores from six weeks [THA: 33.8 (7.9)/TKA: 28.7 (7.8)] to six months [THA: 40.2 (7.3)/TKA: 35.9 (8.3)], and from six months to one year [THA: 41.0 (7.3)/TKA: 37.3 (8.4)], but not from one to two years [THA: 40.0 (8.5)/TKA: 36.4 (9.6)]. CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing either primary THA or TKA can expect clinically meaningful improvements in the first six months after surgery. Beyond this time point, there is a plateau in PROMs. These findings are important for both setting patient expectations in pre-operative discussions, and allowing surgeons to have a realistic understanding of their patients' expected post-operative course.

RESUMO

The Cenozoic topographic development of the Himalaya-Tibet orogen (HTO) substantially affected the paleoenvironment and biodiversity patterns of High Asia. However, concepts on the evolution and paleoenvironmental history of the HTO differ massively in timing, elevational increase and sequence of surface uplift of the different elements of the orogen. Using target enrichment of a large set of transcriptome-derived markers, ancestral range estimation and paleoclimatic niche modelling, we assess a recently proposed concept of a warm temperate paleo-Tibet in Asian spiny frogs of the tribe Paini and reconstruct their historical biogeography. That concept was previously developed in invertebrates. Because of their early evolutionary origin, low dispersal capacity, high degree of local endemism, and strict dependence on temperature and humidity, the cladogenesis of spiny frogs may echo the evolution of the HTO paleoenvironment. We show that diversification of main lineages occurred during the early to Mid-Miocene, while the evolution of alpine taxa started during the late Miocene/early Pliocene. Our distribution and niche modelling results indicate range shifts and niche stability that may explain the modern disjunct distributions of spiny frogs. They probably maintained their (sub)tropical or (warm)temperate preferences and moved out of the ancestral paleo-Tibetan area into the Himalaya as the climate shifted, as opposed to adapting in situ. Based on ancestral range estimation, we assume the existence of low-elevation, climatically suitable corridors across paleo-Tibet during the Miocene along the Kunlun, Qiangtang and/or Gangdese Shan. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and processes of faunal evolution in the HTO.

RESUMO

The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YGP) is characterized by the distinctive isolated habitat of the limestone Karst Islands and features the Wumeng Mountains, which divide the YGP into the two Plateaus of Yunnan and Guizhou. This study aimed to assess the effects of geographic isolation and past climate fluctuation on the distribution of flora in the YGP. To achieve this, we carried out the phylogeographical pattern and genetic structure based on chloroplast and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence in relation to past (Last Glacial Maximum) and present distributions based on ecological niche modeling for Morella nana, an important wild plant resource and endemic to the YGP once considered a vulnerable species. The results suggest that the genetic and chlorotype network structures of M. nana are divided into at least two groups: cpDNA chlorotype H2 (or dominant nrDNA haplotypes h1 and h2), distributed primarily to the east of the Wumeng Mountains, and cpDNA chlorotypes H1 and H3-H10 (or dominant nrDNA haplotype h2 and h3), distributed to the west of the Wumeng Mountains. A deep genetic split was noted within the two groups to reach 25 steps, especially for the cpDNA fragment variation. This east-west divergence reveals the existence of a natural geographical isolation boundary in the form of the Wumeng Mountains, and supports the existence of at least two glacial refuges during the Quaternary glacial period, along with two genetic diversity center, and at least two large geographic protection units for the important species of M. nana. This study indicates that the phylogeographical pattern of M. nana can be attributed to geographic/environmental isolation caused by the Wumeng Mountains and climate fluctuation during the last glacial maximum, and proposes an effective strategy to protecting this important plant resource.

RESUMO

Objective: The objectives of this study were to describe the incidence and morphology of medial tibial plateau fractures that extend into the lateral articular surface and to describe trends in their management. Design: Retrospective. Setting: Level I Urban Trauma Center. Patients: Seventy consecutive patients sustaining OTA/AO 41 B1 and B3 fractures. Intervention: Open reduction internal fixation of medial tibial plateau fractures. Main Outcome Measurements: Incidence of medial tibial plateau fractures that extend into the lateral articular surface. Secondary outcomes include localization of lateral articular surface depression, neurovascular injury, and trends in surgical management. Results: Seventy patients were included with 9 fractures (12.9%) isolated to the medial condyle (MC) and 61 fractures (87.1%) extending to the lateral condyle (LC). Compartment syndrome was present in 2 patients (2.9%), peroneal nerve palsy in 2 (2.9%), and arterial injury in 1 (1.4%). Initial external fixation was used more frequently in the LC group compared with the MC group (P = 0.028). Of the 61 fractures in the LC group, 49 (80.3%) included lateral articular surface depression which localized to the posteromedial quadrant of the lateral articular surface in 36 of 49 fractures (73.5%). Lateral articular surface depression depth ≥10.6 mm was associated with the use of dual incisions (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Schatzker IV fractures frequently extend to the lateral condyle and often present with depression of the posteromedial lateral articular surface. Fractures with lateral articular surface depression depth ≥10.6 mm were more likely to undergo fixation with dual incisions. Level of Evidence: Therapeutic level IV.

RESUMO

Roads are an increasingly prevalent form of human activity that drives the decrease in plant community functions and threatens global biodiversity. However, few studies have focused on the changes in the function and diversity of alpine meadows caused by road infrastructure in the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, the changes in species diversity, functional diversity, and community stability were examined at different distances from the Qinghai-Tibet highway. The results showed that the road intensified the degradation of vegetation, which significantly altered species diversity and community structure. This effect gradually decreased from near to far from the highway. Plant community cover and species diversity were highest at intermediate distances (50-100 m) from the roadway; species diversity and stability were lowest in the grassland most disturbed by the road (0 m), and species diversity and functional diversity tended to stabilize farther away from the road (250 m). Our findings indicate that changes in species diversity are synchronized with changes in functional diversity, which largely determines the outcome of degraded grassland community diversity and stability. Our results provide a reference point for restoring degraded alpine areas and mitigating the ecological impacts of roads.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the short-term changes in chest CT images of low-altitude populations after entering a high-altitude environment. Methods: Chest CT images of 3,587 people from low-altitude areas were obtained within one month of entering a high-altitude environment. Abnormal CT features and clinical symptoms were analyzed. Results: Besides acute high-altitude pulmonary edema, the incidence of soft tissue space pneumatosis was significantly higher than that in low-altitude areas. Pneumatosis was observed in the mediastinum, cervical muscle space, abdominal cavity, and spinal cord epidural space, especially the mediastinum. Conclusion: In addition to acute high-altitude pulmonary edema, spontaneous mediastinal emphysema often occurs when individuals in low-altitude areas adapt to the high-altitude environment of cold, low-pressure, and hypoxia. When the gas escapes to the abdominal cavity, it is easy to be misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal perforation. It is also not uncommon for gas accumulation to escape into the epidural space of the spinal cord. The phenomenon of gas diffusion into distant tissue space and the mechanism of gas escape needs to be further studied.

RESUMO

In the area of "returning farmland to forest" on the Loess Plateau in China, it is difficult to cultivate artificially planted trees into forests. In the current study, abandoned cultivated land after 10 years of natural restoration served as controls (CK), while the treatments included afforestation periods of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 years. Soil samples were collected from various depths: 0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, to 80-100 cm. The findings revealed that with increasing years of artificial afforestation, soil pH gradually increased, and soil moisture content rose in the 0-20 cm layer while declining in deeper layers (20-100 cm) in the Maxian Mountain region of the Loess Plateau. Moreover, the total carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content initially increased and then decreased with the duration of artificial afforestation, reaching peak values after 8 years. Contents of organic matter, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium in the same soil layer increased with each year of afforestation. However, upon reaching 10 years of artificial afforestation, the effective nutrient content in the 60-80 and 80-100 cm soil layers exhibited a decrease. The values of Integrated Fertility Index (IFI) in different afforestation years were ranked as follows: 8 years > 6 years > 10 years > 4 years > 2 year, but all of them were significantly smaller than those of natural restoration plot CK (P < 0.05). Overall, soil fertility in the Maxian Mountain area of the Loess Plateau increases with each additional year of artificial afforestation. However, when the artificial afforestation period is 10 years, soil fertility decreases and marking a shift from enhancement to decline beyond this duration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a serious public health issue that threatens human health and economic development. Presently, differences in the prevalence of DVT among individuals from different nationalities, residents of high-altitude areas, and those consuming any special diet are unknown. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the prevalence of and the associated risk factors for DVT in hospitalized patients in the plateau areas. METHODS: The subjects were hospitalized patients in three grade III-a hospitals in the Qinghai Province, China, during January-October 2020. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected at admission, and ultrasonography of the bilateral lower extremities was performed. The hospital stay-duration was recorded at the time of discharge. RESULTS: A total of 3432 patients were enrolled, of which 159 (4.60%) were diagnosed with DVT. The age of > 50 years (OR = 2.434, 95% CI: 1.521-3.894252, P < 0.001), residence altitude of ≥ 3000 m (OR = 2.346, 95% CI: 1.239-4.440, P = 0.009), D-dimer level of ≥ 0.5 mg/L (OR = 2.211, 95% CI: 1.547-3.161, P < 0.001), presence of comorbidities (OR = 1.904, 95% CI: 1.386-2.705, P < 0.001), a history of varicose veins (OR = 1.990, 95% CI: 0.959-4.128, P = 0.045), and current medications (OR = 2.484, 95% CI: 1.778-3.471, P < 0.001) were identified as risk factors for DVT in these plateau areas. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of DVT in the hospitalized patients of the studied plateau areas was 4.60%. We recommend considering individualized risk stratification (age > 50 years, residence altitude ≥ 3000 m, a history of varicose veins, D-dimer level ≥ 0.5 mg/L, current medications, and comorbidities) for patients at the time of admission.

RESUMO

Plant phenology is an important indicator of the impact of climate change on ecosystems. We have continuously monitored vegetation phenology using near-surface remote sensing, i.e., the PhenoCam in a gully region of the Loess Plateau of China from March 2020 to November 2022. In each image, three regions of interest (ROIs) were selected to represent different types of vegetation (scrub, arbor, and grassland), and five vegetation indexes were calculated within each ROI. The results showed that the green chromatic coordinate (GCC), excess green index (ExG), and vegetation contrast index (VCI) all well-captured seasonal changes in vegetation greenness. The PhenoCam captured seasonal trajectories of different vegetation that reflect differences in vegetation growth. Such differences may be influenced by external abiotic environmental factors. We analyzed the nonlinear response of the GCC series to environmental variables with the generalized additive model (GAM). Our results suggested that soil temperature was an important driver affecting plant phenology in the Loess gully region, especially the scrub showed a significant nonlinear response to soil temperature change. Since in situ phenology monitoring experiments of the small-scale on the Loess Plateau are still relatively rare, our work provides a reference for further understanding of vegetation phenological variations and ecosystem functions on the Loess Plateau.

RESUMO

Biomass burning play a key role in the global carbon cycle by altering the atmospheric composition, and affect regional and global climate. Despite its importance, a very few high-resolution records are available worldwide, especially for recent climate change. This study analyzes levoglucosan, a specific tracer of biomass burning emissions, in a 38-year ice core retrieved from the Shulehe Glacier No. 4, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The levoglucosan concentration in the Shulehe Glacier No. 4 ice core ranged from 0.1 to 55 ng mL-1, with an average concentration of 8 ± 8 ng mL-1. The concentrations showed a decreasing trend from 2002 to 2018. Meanwhile, regional wildfire activities in Central Asian also exhibited a declining trend during the same period, suggesting the potential correspondence between levoglucosan concentration of the Shulehe Glacier No. 4 ice core and the fire activity of Central Asia. Furthermore, a positive correlation also exists between the levoglucosan concentration of the Shulehe Glacier No. 4 ice core and the wildfire counts in Central Asia from 2002 to 2018. While backward air mass trajectory analysis and fire spots data showed a higher distribution of fire counts in South Asia compared to Central Asia, but the dominance of westerly circulation in the northern TP throughout the year. Therefore, the levoglucosan in the Shulehe Glacier No. 4 provides clear evidence of Central Asian wildfire influence on Tibetan Plateau glaciers through westerlies. This highlights a great importance of ice core data for wildfire history reconstruction in the Tibetan Plateau Glacier regions.

RESUMO

Altitude and ultraviolet (UV) radiation may affect the community composition and distribution of microorganisms in soil ecosystems. In this study, 49 soil samples from 10 locations were collected from different elevations on the eastern Pamir Plateau and analyzed for soil microbial community structure and function using high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil samples from different elevations of the eastern Pamir Plateau contained 6834 OTUs in 26 phyla and 399 genera. The dominant phyla common to different elevations were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Gemmatimonadota. The dominant genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, and Solirubrobacter. Species richness increased slightly with elevation, and there were significant differences in community composition between the elevations. Elevation and UV exposure are important factors that drive changes in bacterial communities. The results of the KEGG pathway showed that drug resistance, antineoplastic, aging, replication, and repair were enhanced and then slightly decreased with increasing elevation. Bacterial communities at different elevations were rich in radiation-resistant microorganisms, and the main genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, Pontibacter, and Streptomyces. The findings have shown the composition and distribution of bacterial communities at different elevations on the Eastern Pamir Plateau. Potentially radiation tolerant microbial species were also examined. The results are of considerable importance for the succession of bacterial microorganisms in the plateau region, the study of radiation tolerant bacterial germplasm resources, and the application of biofunctionality.

RESUMO

Two novel strain pairs (HM61T/HM23 and S-34T/S-58) were isolated from soil and the faeces of Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) collected at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of PR China. All four new isolates were aerobic, non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, and short rod-shaped bacteria. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the full-length 16S rRNA genes and 283 core genomic genes indicated that the four strains were separated into two independent branches belonging to the genus Nocardioides. Strains HM61T and HM23 were most closely related to Nocardioides pelophilus THG T63T (98.58 and 98.65 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Strains S-34T and S-58 were most closely related to Nocardioides okcheonensis MMS20-HV4-12T (98.89 and 98.89 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The G+C contents of the genomic DNA of strains HM61T and S-34T were 70.6 and 72.5 mol%, respectively. Strains HM61T, S-34T and the type strains of closely related species in the analysis had average nucleotide identity values of 75.4-90.5 % as well as digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between 20.1 and 40.8 %, which clearly indicated that the four isolates represent two novel species within the genus Nocardioides. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of strains HM61T and S-34T were consistent with the genus Nocardioides. The major fatty acids of all four strains were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c or C18 : 1 ω9c. For strains HM61T and S-34T, MK-8(H4) was the predominant respiratory quinone, ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, and the polar lipids profiles were composed of diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. Based on phylogenetic, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic data, we propose that strains HM61T and S-34T represent two novel species of the genus Nocardioides, respectively, with the names Nocardioides bizhenqiangii sp. nov. and Nocardioides renjunii sp. nov. The type strains are HM61T (=GDMCC 4.343T=JCM 36399T) and S-34T (=CGMCC 4.7664T=JCM 33792T).

RESUMO

Water plays a pivotal role in socio-economic development in Algeria. However, the overexploitations of groundwater resources, water scarcity, and the proliferation of pollution sources (including industrial and urban effluents, untreated landfills, and chemical fertilizers, etc.) have resulted in substantial groundwater contamination. Preserving water irrigation quality has thus become a primary priority, capturing the attention of both scientists and local authorities. The current study introduces an innovative method to mapping contamination risks, integrating vulnerability assessments, land use patterns (as a sources of pollution), and groundwater overexploitation (represented by the waterhole density) through the implementation of a decision tree model. The resulting risk map illustrates the probability of contamination occurrence in the substantial aquifer on the plateau of Mostaganem. An agricultural region characterized by the intensive nutrients and pesticides use, the significant presence of septic tanks, widespread illegal dumping, and a technical landfill not compliant with environmental standards. The critical situation in the region is exacerbated by excessive groundwater pumping surpassing the aquifer's natural replenishment capacity (with 115 boreholes and 6345 operational wells), especially in a semi-arid climate featuring limited water resources and frequent drought. Vulnerability was evaluated using the DRFTID method, a derivative of the DRASTIC model, considering parameters such as depth to groundwater, recharge, fracture density, slope, nature of the unsaturated zone, and the drainage density. All these parameters are combined with analyses of inter-parameter relationship effects. The results show a spatial distribution into three risk levels (low, medium, and high), with 31.5% designated as high risk, and 56% as medium risk. The validation of this mapping relies on the assessment of physicochemical analyses in samples collected between 2010 and 2020. The results indicate elevated groundwater contamination levels in samples. Chloride exceeded acceptable levels by 100%, nitrate by 71%, calcium by 50%, and sodium by 42%. These elevated concentrations impact electrical conductivity, resulting in highly mineralized water attributed to anthropogenic agricultural pollution and septic tank discharges. High-risk zones align with areas exhibiting elevated nitrate and chloride concentrations. This model, deemed satisfactory, significantly enhances the sustainable management of water resources and irrigated land across various areas. In the long term, it would be beneficial to refine "vulnerability and risk" models by integrating detailed data on land use, groundwater exploitation, and hydrogeological and hydrochemical characteristics. This approach could improve vulnerability accuracy and pollution risk maps, particularly through detailed local data availability. It is also crucial that public authorities support these initiatives by adapting them to local geographical and climatic specificities on a regional and national scale. Finally, these studies have the potential to foster sustainable development at different geographical levels.

RESUMO

The Tibetan Plateau, a typical high-altitude area, is less affected by human activities such as industrial development, and the external pollution to water sources is extremely low. Then it is also an important source of water samples for exploring the molecular characteristics of precursors in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. Research data on DBPs in drinking water on the Tibet Plateau remains insufficient, leading to uncertainty about DBP contamination in the area. This study explores the formation potential of 35 typical DBPs, including 6 trihalomethanes (THMs), 9 haloacetic acids (HAAs), 2 halogenated ketones (HKs), 9 nitrosamines (NAs), and 9 aromatic DBPs, during chlorination and chloramination of typical source water samples in the Tibet Plateau of China. Moreover, in order to further investigate the characteristics of the generation of DBPs, the molecular composition of DOM in the collected water samples was characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The findings reveal that, for chlorination and chloramination, the average concentration of the five classes of DBPs was ranked as follows (chlorination, chloramination): HAAs (268.1 µg/L, 54.2 µg/L) > THMs (44.0 µg/L, 2.0 µg/L) > HKs (0.7 µg/L, 1.8 µg/L) > NAs (26.5 ng/L, 74.6 ng/L) > Aromatics (20.4 ng/L, 19.5 ng/L). The dominant compounds in THMs, HAAs, and NAs are trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and nitrosopyrrolidine, respectively. This study highlights a significant positive correlation between DBP generation and UV254, SUV254, and the double bond equivalents of DOM in the source water. It systematically elucidates DOM molecular composition characteristics and DBP formation potential in high-altitude water sources, shedding light on key factors influencing DBP generation at the molecular level in high-altitude areas.

RESUMO

Planktonic communities in aquatic ecosystems are crucial water quality indicators, with their growth dependent on runoff chemical and hydraulic characteristics (e.g., nutrient availability and turbidity). Previous studies have indicated that runoff components (i.e., proportions of precipitation, groundwater, snowmelt, etc.) play a vital role in regulating runoff characteristics, potentially affecting planktonic communities. However, the response of these communities to runoff components, particularly in mountainous regions, remains underexplored. In this study, we conducted four sampling campaigns from 2017 to 2020 in a watershed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Combined with laboratory incubation experiments, we examined the impact of various runoff components on the diversity and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton. We found that a higher proportion of precipitation in runoff contributed to an increase in the diversity of plankton communities. Laboratory experiments with unified water samples incubated with different runoff components demonstrated that the significant influence of precipitation on planktonic diversity primarily stems from the influx of abundant exogenous particulate material into rivers. Using a path analysis, we further confirmed that the impact of precipitation on diversity is primarily through chemical pathways, notably by increasing nutrient concentrations. Our study enhances our understanding of the interactions between the hydrological cycle and aquatic ecosystems, offering valuable insights for effectively maintaining and managing these natural environments.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endurance athletes (EA) are an emerging population of focus for cardiovascular health. The oxygen uptake efficiency plateau (OUEP) is the levelling-off period of ratio between oxygen uptake (VO2) and ventilation (VE). In the cohort of EA, we externally validated prediction models for OUEP and derived with internal validation a new equation. METHODS: 140 EA underwent a medical assessment and maximal cycling cardiopulmonary exercise test. Participants were 55% male (N = 77, age = 21.4 ± 4.8 years, BMI = 22.6 ± 1.7 kg·m- 2, peak VO2 = 4.40 ± 0.64 L·min- 1) and 45% female (N = 63, age = 23.4 ± 4.3 years, BMI = 22.1 ± 1.6 kg·m- 2, peak VO2 = 3.21 ± 0.48 L·min- 1). OUEP was defined as the highest 90-second continuous value of the ratio between VO2 and VE. We used the multivariable stepwise linear regression to develop a new prediction equation for OUEP. RESULTS: OUEP was 44.2 ± 4.2 mL·L- 1 and 41.0 ± 4.8 mL·L- 1 for males and females, respectively. In external validation, OUEP was comparable to directly measured and did not differ significantly. The prediction error for males was - 0.42 mL·L- 1 (0.94%, p = 0.39), and for females was + 0.33 mL·L- 1 (0.81%, p = 0.59). The developed new prediction equation was: 61.37-0.12·height (in cm) + 5.08 (for males). The developed model outperformed the previous. However, the equation explained up to 12.9% of the variance (R = 0.377, R2 = 0.129, RMSE = 4.39 mL·L- 1). CONCLUSION: OUEP is a stable and transferable cardiorespiratory index. OUEP is minimally affected by fitness level and demographic factors. The predicted OUEP provided promising but limited accuracy among EA. The derived new model is tailored for EA. OUEP could be used to stratify the cardiorespiratory response to exercise and guide training.

RESUMO

High-precision rainfall erosivity mapping is crucial for accurately evaluating regional soil erosion on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) under the backdrop of climate warming and humidification. Although high spatiotemporal resolution gridded precipitation data provides the foundation for rainfall erosivity mapping, the increasing spatial heterogeneity of rainfall with decreasing temporal granularity can lead to greater errors when directly computing rainfall erosivity from gridded precipitation data. In this study, a site-scale conversion coefficient was established so that rainfall erosivity calculated using hourly data can be converted to rainfall erosivity calculated using per-minute data. A revised model was established for calculating the rainfall erosivity based on high-resolution hourly precipitation data from the Third Pole gridded precipitation dataset (TPHiPr). The results revealed a notable underestimation in the original calculation results obtained using the TPHiPr, but strong correlation was observed between the two sets of results. There was a significant improvement in the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency (from -0.39 to 0.80) and the Percent Bias (from -63.95 % to 0.37 %) after model revision. The TPHiPr effectively depict the spatial characteristics of rainfall erosivity on the TP. It accurately reflected the rain shadow area on the northern flank of the Himalayas and the dry-hot valley in the Hengduan Mountains. It also showed high rainfall erosivity values in the tropical rainforest area on the southern flank of the eastern Himalayas. The overall trend of rainfall erosivity has increased on the TP during the period 1981 to 2020, with 65.91 % of the regions exhibiting an increasing trend and 22.25 % showing significant increases, indicating an intensified risk of water erosion. These findings suggest that the 40-year-high spatial resolution rainfall erosivity dataset can provide accurate data support for a quantitative understanding of soil erosion on the TP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore clnical efficacy of modified Frosch approach for Schatzker typeⅡtibial plateau fracture with posterolateral column. METHODS: From January 2019 to September 2020, totally 11 patients with Schatzker typeⅡtibial plateau fractures with posterolateral column were treated, including 7 males and 4 females, aged from 21 to 49 years old. Modified Frosch approach was adopted for lateral decubitus position, and posterolateral fractures were fixed with support plates or posterolateral screws. Anterolateral fixation with conventional tibial plateau lateral locking plate. Tibial plateau varus angle and posterior inclination angle were measured by X-ray immediately and 12 months after operation, as well as knee motion at 12 months after operation. Knee function at 12 months after operation was evaluated by knee score of Hospital for Special Surgery(HSS). RESULTS: Eleven patients were followed up for 12 to 15 months. Varus angle and inclination angle at immediately after operation ranged from 76° to 86° and 6° to 10°, respectively, and 79° to 88° and 6° to 10°, respectively at 12 months after operation. The range of extension of knee ranged from 0° to 5°, and flexion was 106° to 137° at 12 months after operation. Postoperative HSS knee score at 12 months ranged from 74 to 94 scores, 8 patients were excellent and 3 good. CONCLUSION: Modified Frosch approach is an effective surgical method for Schatzker typeⅡtibial plateau fracture with posterolateral column. A single incision is used to complete fracture exposure and fixation at two sites, avoiding use of combined incisions, and could obtain good postoperative knee joint function. During operation, popliteal fossa structure should be familiar, and the common peroneal nerve should be protected to avoid injury.
