OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the concept of 'game style' in football, focusing on a team's distinctive approach characterized by tactics, formations, and strategies. The objective is to compare goal-scoring patterns related to "non-offensive transition," "set pieces," "offensive transition," and "positive outcomes" across different league groups. METHODOLOGY: The sample comprises 702 football games, categorized into three league groups: Top Leagues, Marginal Leagues, and Emerging Leagues. A total of 2140 goals were analyzed, classifying them into four types: "No Transitions", "Set Pieces", "Offensive Transitions (direct), and "Positive Outcomes" of offensive transitions. The study aims to identify relevant differences between two distinct competitive periods, namely "Rounds 1 to 5" and "Rounds Last 5." RESULTS: The analysis reveals no significant differences in scoring methods between "Rounds 1 to 5" and "Rounds Last 5" across all variables in the analyzed league groups, except for goals conceded by "No Transition" in the Emerging Leagues. Additionally, results indicate that goals resulting from direct offensive transitions and positive outcomes substantially impact the Top Leagues, constituting 54% of the total scoring. CONCLUSION: The study emphasizes the importance of establishing and maintaining consolidated game patterns, as demonstrated by the consistent scoring patterns across different league groups. While most leagues show no variations in scoring methods between early and late rounds, attention to goals conceded by "No Transition" in Emerging Leagues is warranted. The prominence of direct offensive transitions and positive outcomes in Top Leagues highlights the relevance of these strategies in the scoring process, emphasizing the need for teams to focus on developing and implementing effective game patterns.

PURPOSE: Whilst some studies have comprehensively described the different features associated with the attacking process in football they have not produced a methodology of practical use for performance enhancement. This study presents a framework of comprehensive and meaningful metrics to objectively describe the attacking process so that useful performance profiles can be produced. METHODS: The attacking process was categorized into three independent situations, no advantage (stable), advantage, and unstable (potential goal scoring opportunity) situations. Operational definitions for each situation enhanced their reliability and validity. English Premier League football matches (n = 38) played by Crystal Palace Football Club in the 2017/2018 season were analyzed as an exemplar. RESULTS: Crystal Palace FC created a median of 53.5 advantage situations (IQR = 16.8) and 23 unstable situations (IQR = 8.8) per match. They frequently utilized wide areas (Median = 21.5, IQR = 9.8) to progress, but only 26.6% resulted in unstable situations (Median = 6.0, IQR = 3.8), the lowest rate compared to the other advantage situations. CONCLUSION: This classification framework, when used with contextual factors in a multi-factorial manner, including individual player contributions, will provide practically useful information for applied practice. This approach will help close the so called theory-practice gap and enable academic rigor to inform practical problems.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar o comportamento tático da seleção espanhola de futebol durante a Copa do Mundo FIFA(r) 2010, considerando o resultado parcial das partidas, em quatro diferentes situações: "Empate", "Vitória+1", "Vitória+2", e "Derrota-1". A amostra foi composta por 894 sequências ofensivas da seleção espanhola nos seus sete jogos durante a competição. Para a coleta dos dados recorreu-se às observações dos vídeos dos jogos gravados a partir de transmissões de uma estação de televisão. Foram analisadas as variáveis de jogo: Tempo de realização do ataque, Número de contatos com a bola, Número de bolas recebidas/Número de passes, Velocidade de transmissão da bola, Local de aquisição ou recuperação da posse de bola e Forma de aquisição ou recuperação da posse de bola. Para análise dos dados, utilizou-se estatística descritiva e os testes de Qui-quadrado e Kruskal-Wallis (p < 0,05). Foram verificadas diferenças significativas apenas para as variáveis "Velocidade de transmissão da bola", "Local e Forma de aquisição e recuperação da posse de bola". Em suma, foi possível inferir que o comportamento tático do time espanhol não sofreu alteração significativa no decorrer da competição, independente do "status" da partida
This paper aimed to analyze the tactical behavior of Spain National Football Team during the FIFA(r) World Cup, in four different match statuses: Draw, Win+1, Win+2, and Loss-1. The sample comprised 894 offensive sequences performed over Spain's seven matches during the tournament. Data analysis was performed through observations of video footage recorded from a TV station. Following variables were analyzed of play: Achievement time of the attack, Number of contacts with the ball, Number of balls received/Number of passes, Ball transmission speed, Location of acquisition and recovery of ball possession and Form of acquisition and recovery of ball possession. Descriptive statistics were conducted, and so were Chi-Square and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The significance level was set to p < 0.05. Significant differences were found for the following variables: "ball transmission speed", "location and form of acquisition and recovery of ball possession". In conclusion, it was possible to infer that the tactical behavior of the Spanish team underwent few modifications during the tournament regarding match status
