RESUMO

After the unexpected death of a child, bereaved parents require prompt access to helpful support systems. Online therapeutic writing courses can make such support accessible. Because few studies have included bereaved fathers as participants, we explored the experiences of fathers whose children died unexpectedly and who were part of an online course of therapeutic writing in Norway. We piloted two courses (group 1, six weeks, n = 9; group 2, 5 weeks, n = 5). We describe our methodological considerations for using poetic representations in qualitative health research and present four poetic representations based on fieldwork notes written by the principal investigator. Then, we triangulate and narratively analyze them together with two collective poems written by participants from each group; excerpts of the writings from two fathers, one per group; evaluation surveys (n = 4; n = 3); and, anonymous check-out journaling from the second group (n = 3). Resistance was a salient feature of our participants' grief, and writing enabled them to both be in contact with their emotional world and process difficult emotions as they looked for meaning despite the death of their children. Those who attended the most classes perceived the course as transformative, being part of an ongoing self-exploration, and a possibility to continue and strengthen the bond with their children. Our findings mirror the complexities of the grief experiences of fathers, giving account of their need to find a rhythm to dive into their emotional world, the importance of peer support, and the value of diversifying intervention techniques to meet individual needs and preferences.

RESUMO

Poetic diction routinely involves two complementary classes of features: (i) parallelisms, i.e. repetitive patterns (rhyme, metre, alliteration, etc.) that enhance the predictability of upcoming words, and (ii) poetic deviations that challenge standard expectations/predictions regarding regular word form and order. The present study investigated how these two prediction-modulating fundamentals of poetic diction affect the cognitive processing and aesthetic evaluation of poems, humoristic couplets and proverbs. We developed quantitative measures of these two groups of text features. Across the three text genres, higher deviation scores reduced both comprehensibility and aesthetic liking whereas higher parallelism scores enhanced these. The positive effects of parallelism are significantly stronger than the concurrent negative effects of the features of deviation. These results are in accord with the hypothesis that art reception involves an interplay of prediction errors and prediction error minimization, with the latter paving the way for processing fluency and aesthetic liking. This article is part of the theme issue 'Art, aesthetics and predictive processing: theoretical and empirical perspectives'.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To synthesise qualitative research exploring the care-giving experiences of parents of young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and complex healthcare needs, in the transition to adulthood years. METHOD: Four databases were systematically searched: Scopus, WoS Core Collection, Medline and SciELO. Included papers were assessed for quality and thematically synthesised. Findings are presented in the form of free-verse poems. RESULTS: Nineteen papers from eight countries were included. Analysis generated three themes: interdependency of parent and child, where parents retained responsibility for their child's care; apprehension regarding sharing and shifting responsibility between parents and professionals; an uncertain future in terms of care provision. CONCLUSIONS: Parents are concerned about the future care of their children. Training professionals in alternative and effective communication is fundamental to successful transition. Encouraging discussions about advanced care planning may also alleviate parental concerns and ensure good outcomes for young people with PMLD.

Abstract This essay is a partial result of theoretical reflection on bodily movement; it draws on the discussions held within the study and research group "Subjectivation, Body Education, and Memory." It aims to explore the potential of physical education practitioners in developing and implementing their classes. Utilizing concepts from the French philosopher Henri Bergson, regarding the body, memory, and bodily movement, the essay reflects on whether physical education classes can contribute to generating something novel while preserving their disciplinary identity. Additionally, it serves as an invitation to contemplate how physical education classes create spaces for transforming the education of bodies in the contemporary context.

RESUMO

We investigated pupillary responses to the world's shortest fixed verses, Japanese haiku as aesthetic poetry (AP) and senryu as comic poetry (CP), in comparison with non-poetry control stimuli (NP) comprised of slogans that had the same rhythm patterns. Native Japanese speakers without literary training listened to these stimuli while we recorded their pupil diameters. We found that participants' pupils were significantly dilated for CP compared to NP in an early time window. While AP also evoked larger dilations than NP, the latency for AP-related pupil dilation was relatively long. Thus, lay people experience quick and intense arousal in response to funny and humorous words, while aesthetic properties of words may also elicit intense but slower changes in listeners' arousal levels, presumably because they evoke more implicit and subtle emotional effects. This study is the first to provide evidence that poetic language elicits human pupillary dilation. A better understanding of the cognitive and neural substrates for the sensitive awareness of pleasures expressed via poetic language will provide insights for improving mental and physical health. Hence, pupillometry can act as a useful convenient measurement to delineate the sympathetic activation of emotional contexts via language.

RESUMO

In healthcare institutions across the country, the role of poetry continues to emerge within the liminal spaces between the medical humanities and clinical care. While the field of narrative medicine is well-developed generally, formal review of the state of poetry as a healing modality is limited. Poetry in the medical humanities literature has often been described by its indefinability as much as by its impact on healing. The power of poetry in healthcare is thought to be multi-faceted and deserves to be explored further. Poetry can be medicine for both patient and clinician. "Poetic Medicine" is a modality that has been utilized for the healing of grief, loss, wounds of the psyche and spirit, and as a process for expanding resiliency in healthcare-applications that are particularly relevant to the practice of hospice and palliative medicine-for patient and clinician alike. While numerous approaches share common themes, current programs bringing poetry into healthcare have been operating largely in isolation from each other-with a lack of national consensus on definitions or structures of interventions. Such isolation is a major restriction to the study and growth of Poetic Medicine. While it is not known with certitude, the number of Poetic Medicine programs in healthcare in the United States appears to be growing. In this paper, we propose an initial framework to define the role and impact of poetry in healthcare and then describe two different, well-established Poetic Medicine programs in the United States.

RESUMO

Silent experiences are integral parts of human life, and despite such moments of silence-phenomena may falsely be perceived as moments of "nothings", they are in fact an essential part of human apperception and meaning-making. The significance of moments of silence (an internal, timeless state of being often perceived as solitary, spiritual-mystical, and unconscious, involuntary experiences) and silences (contextual states of temporally oriented and social experiences) is supported by the principles behind the concepts of Gestalten and zero signifiers, in that such absence can lead to greater understanding of meaning than any explicit and direct element ever could. The human experience of life is inseparably linked with the function of apperception as experiencing the presence in a combination with reconstruction of the past and imagination of the future. And as this dynamic across irreversibility of time is in any human experience it is as well present within experiences of silence. Furthermore, is the phenomenon of Einfühlung (the process of feeling in and through others, objects, and oneself) a crucial part of silence-phenomena, as it is uncovered to be connected with both silence as a facilitator of emergence of silence as well as silences affect the act of Einfühlung. Aesthetic experiences can in the form of poetic instants lead to moments of silence, through the human function of Einfühlung. Finally, an analysis of a passage from Lev Vygotsky's personal notebooks will support the line of reasoning the centrality of the existence of silence.

RESUMO

This article argues that poetic inquiry is a valuable method for unmasking the interior religious experiences of African closeted queer clergy. It demonstrates how poetic inquiry could function as analytic tool for the decolonisation, reclamation, reinsertion and reconstitution of the closeted queer cleric's belonging in African religio-cultural spaces in which their sexualities are been exorcised and alienated. It also makes visible the ongoing complexities of closeted queer clergy and the processes of interrogating their faith tensions through negotiating and subverting ecclesiastical and cultural alienations. Finally, it shows how closeted queer clergy interpret Christian faith as a tool for lived faith tensions between uncertainty and hope; fear and resistance; alienation and belonging; rejection and acceptance.

The author describes the supervisory work as listening to listening of the analyst to his analysand. She suggests that this supervising Listening ideally operates in a space similar to an oneiroid atmosphere. She then mentions the operation of a reverie of another reverie, as part of a radical detachment of the common sense, and discusses the role of analytic theory during the session and a supervision. The presence of the theory is compared to the presence of blood in the human body: it must never weigh on the intersubjective relationship of the analytic field.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the educational landscape. This article offers the model, Crisis Theory with/in Teacher Education Programs (CT-TEP), which examines how the interplay of preservice teachers' stressors and personal coping strategies filtered through their identity provides teacher educators strategies for helping students persevere through crises. Data collected in one teacher education program during the spring 2020 COVID-19 shutdown across the United States illuminates preservice teachers' present and possible selves, through a series of poems demonstrating emotions and coping strategies of student-participants. Implications for teacher educators to focus on possible selves with/in teacher education classrooms as a mechanism for understanding emotional health and well-being is discussed.

RESUMO

Qualitative inquiry is increasingly popular in health professions education, and there has been a move to solidify processes of analysis to demystify the practice and increase rigour. Whilst important, being bound too heavily by methodological processes potentially represses the imaginative creativity of qualitative expression and interpretation-traditional cornerstones of the approach. Rigid adherence to analytic steps risks leaving no time or space for moments of 'wonder' or emotional responses which facilitate rich engagement. Poetic inquiry, defined as research which uses poetry 'as, in, [or] for inquiry', offers ways to encourage creativity and deep engagement with qualitative data within health professions education. Poetic inquiry attends carefully to participant language, can deepen researcher reflexivity, may increase the emotive impact of research, and promotes an efficiency of qualitative expression through the use of 'razor sharp' language. This A Qualitative Space paper introduces the approach by outlining how it may be applied to inquiry within health professions education. Approaches to engaging with poetic inquiry are discussed and illustrated using examples from the field's scholarship. Finally, recommendations for interested researchers on how to engage with poetic inquiry are made, including suggestions as to how to poetize existing qualitative research practices.

RESUMO

Creating psychologically safe spaces for pre-service teachers to talk about their hopes, dreams and tensions of becoming teachers is complex work that requires teacher educators to engage with a range of pedagogical practices. A teacher educator must consider how they create this safe space, offering opportunity for vulnerabilities to be revealed. But a teacher educator must also be vulnerable them self; with an awareness for not always knowing what one will be told, will hear or will see. I argue that a mindfulness practice supports being grounded and an ability to hold the space for pre-service teachers as they explore their wellbeing and thus develop, grow, maintain and protect their self-care. In this paper, I draw on reflective and goal setting data to examine pre-service teachers' understandings of their own wellbeing and self-care needs. I use poetic representation to illuminate practices that provide insight into what resources are drawn upon, and what concerns pre-service teachers have as they prepare for their last professional experience placement before graduation. Poetic representation of data provides opportunity to connect with the experiences of pre-service teachers and reveals where there are gaps that can provide us opportunities to consider where we locate pre-service teacher wellbeing in initial teacher education.

RESUMO

Transition to practice can be a turbulent time for new doctors. It has been proposed transition is experienced non-linearly in physical, psychological, cultural and social domains. What is less well known, however, is whether transition within these domains can contribute to the experience of moral injury in new doctors. Further, the lived experience of doctors as they transition to practice is underexplored. Given this, we asked; how do newly qualified doctors experience transition from medical school to practice? One-to-one phenomenological interviews with 7 recently qualified UK doctors were undertaken. Findings were analysed using Ajjawi and Higgs' framework of hermeneutic analysis. Following identification of secondary concepts, participant-voiced research poems were crafted by the research team, re-displaying participant words chronologically to convey meaning and deepen analysis. 4 themes were identified: (1) The nature of transition to practice; (2) The influence of community; (3) The influence of personal beliefs and values; and (4) The impact of unrealistic undergraduate experience. Transition to practice was viewed mostly negatively, with interpersonal support difficult to access given the 4-month nature of rotations. Participants describe relying on strong personal beliefs and values, often rooted in an 'ethic of caring' to cope. Yet, in the fraught landscape of the NHS, an ethic of caring can also prove troublesome and predispose to moral injury as trainees work within a fragmented system misaligned with personal values. The disjointed nature of postgraduate training requires review, with focus on individual resilience redirected to tackle systemic health-service issues.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lecture based large classroom teaching is limited in scope of learning by being primarily. Teacher focussed, directive and monotonous with students often being passive participants. In psychiatry, problem is further compounded because of stigma around the subject and lack of summative assessment. Narratives and poems have been used in education to facilitate teaching. METHODS: 50 randomly selected medical undergraduate students were subjected to short poetic narrative video facilitated large classroom interactive lecture, while 50 other students were imparted traditional classroom lecture. Acceptability and effectiveness of this teaching learning modality was done with a questionnaire and multiple-choice questions on the given topic post the lecture. RESULT: Around 90 percent of the student found the modified classroom teaching to be acceptable. It was equally effective as traditional classroom teaching. Student and faculty reflected on the whole experience as innovative, immersive and appealing to empathy. CONCLUSION: Poetic narrative facilitated classroom teaching is an acceptable and equally effective modality of large classroom teaching.

RESUMO

Researchers exploring sensitive topics need to identify appropriate methodologies to encourage open expression. We used poetic inquiry to explore the lived realities of transwomen in Namibia, a socially marginalised group globally. We conducted two focus group discussions with 15 transwomen and developed found poems. The poems captured issues of identity and belonging and illustrated the transwomen's journeys of self-acceptance, experiences of violence, rejection, agency and relationships. In order to enhance participant voice and enrich the poems, they were shared with some transwomen in a feedback and reflection session. This article unpacks this collaborative poetics approach. We share selected poems, explore their impact on participants, and discuss how this engagement with the poetry allowed for deeper discussion of participants' experiences. The collaboration around the poems allowed researchers and participants to find new ways to explore and address issues of discrimination and marginalization, and to actively engage larger and more diverse audiences.

RESUMO

At the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, before we had a chance to acclimate to our world turned upside-down, I was genuinely confounded by the inflexibility of some professors to help students. After all, we had been offered the grace of an extension on tenure-track requirements, and afforded the opportunity, and relative safety, of working from home. How was it possible then, to not understand that students, too, might need grace? And how could anyone be OK with choosing not to help? Far from traditional research questions, my wonderings provoked lively conversations with colleagues, and a lens through which to consider my own positionality and difficulties in dealing with the challenges posed by the pandemic. Framed by Nel Noddings' Ethic of Care, and through poetic inquiry, this article presents a personal response to teaching in an Educator Preparation Program during a global pandemic.

(AU)

The main objective of this chapter is to analyze and comment on what the eclectic Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) understands by a good judge of souls (sjelekyndig), a term that this peculiar philosopher and poet makes equivalent to psychologist in the work For Self-Examination. In agreement with this objective, the modus operandi of the experimenting psychologist (experimenterende) is analyzed and commented on as it is carried out by several of its narrating authors, namely, Johannes Climacus (in Postscript), Johannes de silentio (in Fear and Tremor) and Frater Taciturnus (in Stadiums on the Way of Life). Experimenterende (that is to say, the one that can be defined by putting in practice his ability to experiment) is indeed the adjective that is most frequently used to qualify the term "psychologist". Special emphasis is given to the role of imagination in the author and in the reader and the way imagination joins the faculty of judgment in the interaction between reader-text-author. Special attention is given to the role of the poetic and the literary within the whole process. (AU)

The article proposes to a phenomenological balance about the poetic statute as established by Renaud Barbaras. Taking Merleau-Ponty's works as the front line, Barbaras, however, seeks to overcome it by glimpsing another possible horizon beyond the usual division between philosophy and literature. The overcoming of this limit seems to find in Fernando Pessoa's poetic work a living example of interlocution. What is discovered in this work, as a backdrop, is an alliance between poetry and metaphysics so that literary praxis, as "non-philosophy", holds, for the truth, a "clandestine life" as an experience of thought. The article concludes with other possible clipping that gives rise to this same perspective of analysis, as found, for example, in the literary creation of Clarice Lispector or, still, in the poetic-philosophical essayism by Bento Prado Jr.
