RESUMO

Synchronization is one of the most striking instances of collective behavior, occurring in many natural phenomena. For example, in some ant species, ants are inactive within the nest most of the time, but their bursts of activity are highly synchronized and involve the entire nest population. Here we revisit a simulation model that generates this synchronized rhythmic activity through autocatalytic behavior, i.e., active ants can activate inactive ants, followed by a period of rest. We derive a set of delay differential equations that provide an accurate description of the simulations for large ant colonies. Analysis of the fixed-point solutions, complemented by numerical integration of the equations, indicates the existence of stable limit-cycle solutions when the rest period is greater than a threshold and the event of spontaneous activation of inactive ants is very unlikely, so that most of the arousal of ants is done by active ants. Furthermore, we argue that the persistent oscillations observed in the simulations for colonies of finite size are due to resonant amplification of demographic noise.

Introduction: The pathophysiology of keloid formation is poorly understood, and current treatments, including intralesional corticosteroids, cryotherapy, and surgery, are often associated with high resistance to treatment and recurrence. The multifactorial pathogenesis of keloid formation suggests that aberrant inflammatory cytokine signaling associated with keratinocyte dysregulation may contribute to keloid-associated pruritus. Case Presentation: In this paper, we report 2 cases of keloid-associated pruritus that were successfully treated with topical crisaborole 2% ointment, a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor. Both patients had previously undergone multiple unsuccessful treatments before being treated with crisaborole 2% ointment. In both cases, the patients experienced complete relief of pruritus with no significant change in keloid size, thickness, or appearance. Conclusion: We propose that PDE4 inhibitors, such as crisaborole, may be an effective therapy for keloid- associated pruritus.

Introduction: Actinic granuloma (AG) is a rare skin eruption thought to result from a sun-induced inflammatory response attracting giant cells, which are large, multinucleated, and inflammatory, to form granulomas and degrade surrounding elastic material. Clinically, lesions begin on sun-exposed skin as pink papules and nodules that coalesce into demarcated annular plaques with a hypopigmented center. Histologically, actinic elastosis surrounds the outer annulus ring, with histiocytes and giant cells within the raised border, and the innermost central zone is filled with minimal to absent elastic fibers. Case Presentation: We present a middle-aged female with a pruritic eruption of diffuse erythematous macules and papules coalescing into plaques with mild scale involving the scalp, face, neck, torso, and upper and lower extremities, including the palms and soles, but sparing the ears, bilateral axillae, elbows, and knees. Skin biopsies revealed solar elastosis and abundant multinucleated foreign body giant cells with ingested elastic fibers. The patient's clinical presentation and histopathology were consistent with a diagnosis of AG. Furthermore, spirochete immunostaining of the specimens revealed multiple Treponema pallidum spirochetes throughout the epidermis and dermis. Secondary syphilis with primary chancre was added to the diagnosis. Treatment included oral and topical steroids followed by intravenous penicillin G. After 1 month, all lesions had resolved with post-inflammatory erythema. Conclusion: Our patient differs from the typical presentation in describing intense pruritus with her eruption. This interesting collision reminds clinicians to retain a high index of suspicion for multiple diagnoses in a single patient.

Transport networks, such as vasculature or river networks, provide key functions in organisms and the environment. They usually contain loops whose significance for the stability and robustness of the network is well documented. However, the dynamics of their formation is usually not considered. Such structures often grow in response to the gradient of an external field. During evolution, extending branches compete for the available flux of the field, which leads to effective repulsion between them and screening of the shorter ones. Yet, in remarkably diverse processes, from unstable fluid flows to the canal system of jellyfish, loops suddenly form near the breakthrough when the longest branch reaches the boundary of the system. We provide a physical explanation for this universal behavior. Using a 1D model, we explain that the appearance of effective attractive forces results from the field drop inside the leading finger as it approaches the outlet. Furthermore, we numerically study the interactions between two fingers, including screening in the system and its disappearance near the breakthrough. Finally, we perform simulations of the temporal evolution of the fingers to show how revival and attraction to the longest finger leads to dynamic loop formation. We compare the simulations to the experiments and find that the dynamics of the shorter finger are well reproduced. Our results demonstrate that reconnection is a prevalent phenomenon in systems driven by diffusive fluxes, occurring both when the ratio of the mobility inside the growing structure to the mobility outside is low and near the breakthrough.

Currently, pollution due to heavy metals, in particular dissolved mercury, is a major concern for society and the environment. This work aims to evaluate the current scenario regarding the removal/elimination of mercury. Mercury removal through adsorption is mainly done through artificial resins and metallic-organic frameworks. In the case of the zinc organic framework, it was able to adsorb Hg2+, reaching an adsorption capacity of 802 mg g-1. As for the Hg(0) the coconut husk was found to have the lowest equilibrium time, 30 min, and the highest adsorption capacity of 956.2 mg g-1. Experimental reports and molecular simulation indicate that the adsorption of mercury and other chemical forms occurs due to electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, precipitation, complexation, chelation, and covalent bonds, according to the material nature. The reported thermodynamic results show that, in most cases, the mercury adsorption has an endothermic nature with enthalpy levels below 40 kJ mol-1. Thermal and chemical regeneration methods lead to a similar number of 5 cycles for different materials. The presence of other ions, in particular cadmium, lead, and copper, generates an antagonistic effect for mercury adsorption. Regarding the other current technologies, it was found that mercury removal is feasible through precipitation, phytoremediation, and marine microalgae; all these methods require constant chemicals or a slow rate of removal according to the conditions. Advanced oxidative processes have noteworthy removal of Hg(0); however, Fenton processes lead to mineralization, which leads to Fe2+ and Fe3+ in solution; sonochemical processes are impossible to scale up at the current technology level; and electrochemical processes consume more energy and require constant changes of the anode and cathode. Overall, it is possible to conclude that the adsorption process remains a more friendly, economical, and greener process in comparison with other processes.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, Uganda joined the Global Financing Facility (GFF), a Global Health Initiative for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH). Similar initiatives have been found to be powerful entities influencing national policy and priorities in Uganda, but few independent studies have assessed the GFF. OBJECTIVE: To understand the policy process and contextual factors in Uganda that influenced the content of the GFF policy documents (Investment Case and Project Appraisal). METHODS: We conducted a qualitative policy analysis. The data collection included a document review of national RMNCAH policy documents and key informant interviews with national stakeholders involved in the development process of GFF policy documents (N = 16). Data were analyzed thematically using the health policy triangle. RESULTS: The process of developing the GFF documents unfolded rapidly with a strong country-led approach by the government. Work commenced in late 2015; the Investment Case was published in April 2016 and the Project Appraisal Document was completed and presented two months later. The process was steered by technocrats from government agencies, donor agencies, academics and selected civil society organisations, along with the involvement of political figures. The Ministry of Health was at the center of coordinating the process and navigating the contestations between technical priorities and political motivations. Although civil society organisations took part in the process, there were concerns that some were excluded. CONCLUSION: The learnings from this study provide insights into the translation of globally conceived health initiatives at country level, highlighting enablers and challenges. The study shows the challenges of trying to have a 'country-led' initiative, as such initiatives can still be heavily influenced by 'elites'. Given the diversity of actors with varying interests, achieving representation of key actors, particularly those from underserved groups, can be difficult and may necessitate investing further time and resources in their engagement.


Main findings: Existing policy priorities and platforms helped to shape the Global Financing Facility agenda in Uganda, with leadership from the Ministry of Health and subtle yet clear influences from global actors and national civil society.Added knowledge: The study contributes to the understanding of the complexities in translating a globally conceived initiative into one that is locally owned.Global health impact for policy and action: Global health initiatives must work with government to enable local ownership thorough more engagement with diverse national stakeholders in order to understand their expectations from inception and address them as part of processes of strengthening robust policy review and implementation.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience overall emotion regulation difficulties, but less is known about the long-term role of such difficulties in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for SAD. Forty-six patients with SAD receiving internet-delivered CBT, and matched healthy controls (HCs; n = 39), self-reported the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-SR), and participated in anticipatory speech anxiety behavioral experiments. Patients were measured at seven time points before, during and after CBT over a total period of 28 months, and HCs at two timepoints. Disaggregated growth curve models with a total of 263 observations were used, as well as intra-class correlation coefficients and regression models. Patients' LSAS-SR and DERS ratings were reliable (ICC = .83 and .75 respectively), and patients, relative to controls, showed larger difficulties in emotion regulation at pre-treatment (p < .001). During CBT, within-individual improvements in emotion regulation significantly predicted later LSAS-SR reductions (p = .041, pseudo-R2 = 43%). Changes in emotion regulation may thus be important to monitor on an individual level and may be used to improve outcomes in future developments of internet-delivered CBT.

Traditional mining practices not only cause severe environmental issues, but also face the problem of insufficient production capacity of gold to meet its growing demand. The proposed alternative strategies for gold production, such as the extraction of gold from seawater, still keep a formidable challenge due to their strong dependence on adsorbent materials with high capacity, selectivity, and sensitivity, while also needing to meet the demands of being environmentally friendly and cost-effective. In practice, the direct extraction of gold from seawater is limited by its extremely low yield and high energy expenditure. However, if the combination of gold extraction techniques with seawater desalination can substantially reduce the energy consumption, the extraction of gold from seawater will become economical and feasible. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of marine gold extraction using reduced graphene oxide membranes (rGOM) during the seawater desalination process. The rGOM can adsorb almost all Au3+ from the solutions with trace concentrations of Au3+ ranging from 10 ppb to 200 ppb. The adsorption quantity is linearly related to the concentration, indicating that the adsorption capacity of rGOM is much higher than the total amount of Au3+ in the solution. Additionally, the rGOM can selectively adsorb 99 % of Au3+ in the mixed solution while hardly adsorbing other common elements in seawater. More importantly, the rGOM exhibits the long-term stability over 30 days when being immersed in the solution, making it directly compatible with the existing seawater desalination processes. These specific properties allow the rGOM to be an ideal candidate for combining the extraction of gold from seawater with seawater desalination processes. Our findings provide a methodology for enhancing the economic efficiency of the extraction of gold from seawater and hold promise for addressing the problem of gold scarcity.

INTRODUCTION: Hippo is a signaling pathway that is evolutionarily conserved and plays critical roles in wound healing and tissue regeneration. Disruption of the transcriptional activity of both Hippo-associated factors, the yes-associated protein (YAP), and the transcriptional co-activator with PDZ binding motif (TAZ) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, fibrosis, and cancer. This makes the Hippo pathway an appealing target for therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVES: Prior research has indicated that medical gas plasma promotes wound healing by delivering a combination of reactive species directly to the affected areas. However, the involvement of YAP/TAZ and other signaling pathways in diabetic wound healing remains unexplored. METHODS: To this extent, ear wounds were generated and treated with gas plasma in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Transcriptome profiling at two wound healing stages (days 9 and 20 post-wounding) was performed in female and male mice. Additionally, we employed gene and protein expression analyses, utilizing immunohistological and -chemical staining of various targets as well as quantitative PCR and Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Gas plasma treatment accelerated healing by increasing re-epithelialization and modifying extracellular matrix components. Transcriptomic profiling charting the major alterations in gene expression following plasma treatment was followed by a validation of several targets using transcriptional and translational quantification as well as localization analyses. CONCLUSION: Our study evaluated the cellular regulation of essential targets of the Hippo and related pathways such as YAP/TAZ, ß-catenin, tumor growth factor ß, and oxidative stress signaling after plasma treatment. The activation of genes, pathways, and their regulators is an attractive therapeutic aim for a therapeutic intervention in dermal skin repair in diabetic diseases using medical gas plasmas.

BACKGROUND: Walnut anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides seriously endangers the yield and quality of walnut, and has now become a catastrophic disease in the walnut industry. Therefore, understanding both pathogen invasion mechanisms and host response processes is crucial to defense against C. gloeosporioides infection. RESULTS: Here, we investigated the mechanisms of interaction between walnut fruits (anthracnose-resistant F26 fruit bracts and anthracnose-susceptible F423 fruit bracts) and C. gloeosporioides at three infection time points (24hpi, 48hpi, and 72hpi) using a high-resolution time series dual transcriptomic analysis, characterizing the arms race between walnut and C. gloeosporioides. A total of 20,780 and 6670 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in walnut and C. gloeosporioides against 24hpi, respectively. Generous DEGs in walnut exhibited opposite expression patterns between F26 and F423, which indicated that different resistant materials exhibited different transcriptional responses to C. gloeosporioides during the infection process. KEGG functional enrichment analysis indicated that F26 displayed a broader response to C. gloeosporioides than F423. Meanwhile, the functional analysis of the C. gloeosporioides transcriptome was conducted and found that PHI, SignalP, CAZy, TCDB genes, the Fungal Zn (2)-Cys (6) binuclear cluster domain (PF00172.19) and the Cytochrome P450 (PF00067.23) were largely prominent in F26 fruit. These results suggested that C. gloeosporioides secreted some type of effector proteins in walnut fruit and appeared a different behavior based on the developmental stage of the walnut. CONCLUSIONS: Our present results shed light on the arms race process by which C. gloeosporioides attacked host and walnut against pathogen infection, laying the foundation for the green prevention of walnut anthracnose.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancers (HNC) are associated with high rates of anxiety. Anxiety has been linked to biological pathways implicated in cancer progression, though little is known about its effects on overall survival. We hypothesized that higher pretreatment anxiety levels in patients with HNC would predict poorer 2-year overall survival and expected this relationship to be mediated by both systemic inflammation and tumor response to treatment. METHODS: Patients (N = 394) reported anxiety symptomatology via the GAD-7 at treatment planning. Pre-treatment hematology workup provided an index of systemic inflammation (SII; N = 292). Clinical data review yielded tumor response and overall survival. Logistic and multiple regressions and Cox proportional hazard models tested hypothesized relationships. RESULTS: Higher pretreatment anxiety levels were significantly associated with poorer 2-year survival (hazard ratio [HR], 1.039; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.014-1.066, p = 0.002). The association between anxiety and SII was not significant, though anxiety was associated with poorer tumor response (odds ratio [OR], 1.033; 95% CI, 1.001-1.066, p = 0.043). Tumor response fully mediated the relationship between anxiety symptoms and 2-year survival (HR, 9.290, 95% CI, 6.152-14.031, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety was associated with overall survival. Tumor response, but not systemic inflammation, emerged as a potential biological pathway mediating this effect. Screening for anxiety may be beneficial to help prospectively address these concerns and ameliorate potentially detrimental impact on clinically meaningful cancer outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Global Financing Facility (GFF) was launched in 2015 to catalyse increased domestic and external financing for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent health, and nutrition. Half of the deaths along this continuum are neonatal deaths, stillbirths or maternal deaths; yet these topics receive the least aid financing across the continuum. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a policy content analysis of maternal and newborn health (MNH), including stillbirths, in GFF country planning documents, and assess the mortality burden related to the investment. METHODS: Content analysis was conducted on 24 GFF policy documents, investment cases and project appraisal documents (PADs), from 11 African countries. We used a systematic data extraction approach and applied a framework for analysis considering mindset, measures, and money for MNH interventions and mentions of mortality outcomes. We compared PAD investments to MNH-related deaths by country. RESULTS: For these 11 countries, USD$1,894 million of new funds were allocated through the PADs, including USD$303 million (16%) from GFF. All documents had strong content on MNH, with particular focus on pregnancy and childbirth interventions. The investment cases commonly included comprehensive results frameworks, and PADs generally had less technical content and fewer indicators. Mortality outcomes were mentioned, especially for maternal. Stillbirths were rarely included as targets. Countries had differing approaches to funding descriptions. PAD allocations are commensurate with the burden. CONCLUSIONS: The GFF country plans present a promising start in addressing MNH. Emphasising links between investments and burden, explicitly including stillbirth, and highlighting high-impact packages, as appropriate, could potentially increase impact.


Main finding: Maternal and newborn health care packages are strongly included in the Global Financing Facility policy documents for 11 African countries, especially regarding pregnancy and childbirth, though less for stillbirth, or postnatal care, or small and sick newborn care.Added knowledge: This study is the first independent content analysis of Global Financing Facility investment cases and related project appraisal documents, revealing mostly consistent content for maternal and newborn health across documents and overall correlation between national mortality burden and investments committed.Global health impact for policy and action: The Global Financing Facility have demonstrated promising initial investments for maternal and newborn health, although there are also missed opportunities for strengthening, especially for some neonatal high-impact packages and counting impact on stillbirths.

Nonmedical use of prescription opioids peaks during late adolescence, a developmental period associated with the maturation of higher-order cognitive processes. To date, however, how chronic adolescent oxycodone (OXY) self-administration alters neurobehavioral (i.e., locomotion, startle reactivity) and/or neurocognitive (i.e., preattentive processes, intrasession habituation, stimulus-reinforcement learning, sustained attention) function has not yet been systematically evaluated. Hence, the rationale was built for establishing the dose-dependency of adolescent OXY self-administration on the trajectory of neurobehavioral and neurocognitive development. From postnatal day (PD) 35 to PD 105, an age in rats that corresponds to the adolescent and young adult period in humans, male and female F344/N rats received access to either oral OXY (0, 2, 5, or 10 mg/kg) or water under a two-bottle choice experimental paradigm. Independent of biological sex or dose, rodents voluntarily escalated their OXY intake across ten weeks. A longitudinal experimental design revealed prominent OXY-induced impairments in neurobehavioral development, characterized by dose-dependent increases in locomotion and sex-dependent increases in startle response. Systematic manipulation of the interstimulus interval in prepulse inhibition supports an OXY-induced impairment in preattentive processes. Despite the long-term cessation of OXY intake, rodents with a history of chronic adolescent oral OXY self-administration exhibited deficits in sustained attention; albeit no alterations in stimulus-reinforcement learning were observed. Taken together, adolescent oral OXY self-administration induces selective long-term alterations in neurobehavioral and neurocognitive development enjoining the implementation of safer prescribing guidelines for this population.

Restoring biodiversity-based resilience and ecosystem multi-functionality needs to be informed by more accurate predictions of animal biodiversity responses to environmental change. Ecological models make a substantial contribution to this understanding, especially when they encode the biological mechanisms and processes that give rise to emergent patterns (population, community, ecosystem properties and dynamics). Here, a distinction between 'mechanistic' and 'process-based' ecological models is established to review existing approaches. Mechanistic and process-based ecological models have made key advances to understanding the structure, function and dynamics of animal biodiversity, but are typically designed to account for specific levels of biological organisation and spatiotemporal scales. Cross-scale ecological models, which predict emergent co-occurring biodiversity patterns at interacting scales of space, time and biological organisation, is a critical next step in predictive ecology. A way forward is to first capitalise on existing models to systematically evaluate the ability of scale-explicit mechanisms and processes to predict emergent patterns at alternative scales. Such model intercomparisons will reveal mechanism to process transitions across fine to broad scales, overcome approach-specific barriers to model realism or tractability and identify gaps which necessitate the development of new fundamental principles. Key challenges surrounding model complexity and uncertainty would need to be addressed, and while opportunities from big data can streamline the integration of multiple scale-explicit biodiversity patterns, ambitious cross-scale field studies are also needed. Crucially, overcoming cross-scale ecological modelling challenges would unite disparate fields of ecology with the common goal of improving the evidence-base to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems under novel environmental change.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the most efficient water cleaning technologies, but their applications face critical challenges in terms of mass/electron transfer limitations and catalyst loss/deactivation. Bipolar electrochemistry (BPE) is a wireless technique that is promising for energy and environmental applications. However, the synergy between AOPs and BPE has not been explored. In this study, by combining BPE with AOPs, we develop a general approach of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electric-field-induced bipolar electrodes to control electron transfer for efficient water purification. This approach can be used for permanganate and peroxide activation, with superior performances in the degradation of refractory organic pollutants and excellent durability in recycling and scale-up experiments. Theoretical calculations, in situ measurements, and physical experiments showed that an electric field could substantially reduce the energy barrier of electron transfer over CNTs and induce them to produce bipolar electrodes via electrochemical polarization or to form monopolar electrodes through a single particle collision effect with feeding electrodes. This approach can continuously provide activated electrons from one pole of bipolar electrodes and simultaneously achieve "self-cleaning" of catalysts through CNT-mediated direct oxidation from another pole of bipolar electrodes. This study provides a fundamental scientific understanding of BPE, expands its scope in the environmental field, and offers a general methodology for water purification.

In recent years, vegetation plays a key role in landslide stability under extreme rainfall in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, so it is very important to identify the mechanism of vegetation slope protection. This study takes wildcat landslide in Three Gorges Reservoir area as the research object, using indoor landslide model test and building monitoring systems such as stress field, displacement field, and soil erosion, to illustrate the protective effect of typical vegetation. Furthermore, Bermuda cover effectively reduces pore water pressure, pore soil pressure, displacement, and turbidity. In particular, the three stages of interception and buffering of rainfall by stems and leaves, infiltration and absorption of rainfall by the root system, and the reinforcement of the slope against sliding forces by the root system have been divided. Moreover, these findings offer valuable preliminary insights for guiding landslide mitigation strategies in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

Rhizosphere bacteria are critical for supporting plant performance in stressful environments. Understanding the assembly and co-occurrence of rhizosphere bacterial communities contributes significantly to both plant growth and heavy metal accumulation. In this study, Ligustrum lucidum and Melia azedarach were planted in soils with simulated varying levels of Pb-Zn contamination. The Rhizosphere bacterial communities were investigated by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The impacts of Pb-Zn contamination on the diversity and structure of the rhizosphere bacterial community were found to be greater than those of both tree species. The variation in bacterial community structure in both trees was mainly driven by the combinations of Pb-Zn and soil properties. Deterministic processes (non-planted, 82 %; L. lucidum, 73 %; M. azedarach, 55 %) proved to be the most important assembly processes for soil bacterial communities, but both trees increased the importance of stochastic processes (18 %, 27 %, 45 %). The rhizosphere co-occurrence networks exhibited greater stability compared to the non-planted soil networks. Rare taxa played a dominant role in maintaining the stability of rhizosphere networks, as most of the keystone taxa within rhizosphere networks belonged to rare taxa. Dissimilarities in the structure and network complexity of rhizosphere bacterial communities were significantly associated with differences in tree biomass and metal accumulation. These variations in response varied between both trees, with L. lucidum exhibiting greater potential for phytoremediation in its rhizosphere compared to M. azedarach. Our results offer valuable insights for designing effective microbe-assisted phytoremediation systems.

1H-1H nuclear cross-relaxation experiments have been carried out with lysozyme in variable glycerol viscosity to study intramolecular motion, self-diffusion, and isotropic rigid-body rotational tumbling at 298 K, pH 3.8. Dynamics of intramolecular 1H-1H cross-relaxation rates, the increase in internuclear spatial distances, and lateral and rotational diffusion coefficients all show fractional viscosity dependence with a power law exponent κ in the 0.17-0.83 range. The diffusion coefficient of glycerol Ds with the bulk viscosity itself is non-Stokesian, having a fractional viscosity dependence on the medium viscosity (Ds âˆ¼ Î·-κ, κ ≈ 0.71). The concurrence and close similarity of the fractional viscosity dependence of glycerol diffusion on the one hand, and diffusion and intramolecular cross-relaxation rates of the protein on the other lead to infer that relaxation of glycerol slaves protein relaxations. Glycerol-transformed native lysozyme to a quasi-native state does not affect the conclusion that both global and internal fluctuations are slaved to glycerol relaxation.

INTRODUCTION: Interventions to support behaviour change in people living with chronic health conditions increasingly use patient groups as the mode of delivery, but these are often designed without consideration of the group processes that can shape intervention outcomes. This article outlines a new approach to designing group-based behaviour change interventions that prioritizes recipients' shared social identity as group members in facilitating the adoption of established behaviour change techniques (BCTs). The approach is illustrated through an example drawn from research focused on people living with severe obesity. METHODS: A prioritization process was undertaken in collaboration with stakeholders, including behaviour change experts, clinicians, and a former patient to develop an evidence-based, group intervention informed by the social identity approach to health. Three phases of development are reported: (1) identification of the health problem; (2) delineation of intervention mechanisms and operationalization of BCTs for group delivery and (3) intervention manualization. The fourth phase, intervention testing and optimization, is reported elsewhere. RESULTS: A group-based behaviour change intervention was developed, consisting of 12 group sessions and 3 one-to-one consultations. The intervention aimed to support the development of shared social identity among recipients, alongside the delivery of evidence-based BCTs, to improve the likelihood of successful intervention and health outcomes among people living with severe obesity. CONCLUSIONS: A manualized intervention, informed by the social identity approach to health, was systematically designed with input from stakeholders. The development approach employed can inform the design of behavioural interventions in other health contexts where group-based delivery is planned.
