RESUMO

Globalization and competition drive rapid adoption of new technologies, leading to a rise in complex projects. Project managers need to know how to lead teams through the planning and execution phases of a project while keeping in line with the organization's objectives. In order to successfully manage complex projects, emotional intelligence is an essential leadership quality. Therefore, the present research aimed to investigate the impact of project manager's emotional intelligence (PMEI) on megaprojects China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) success through mediating roles of human-related agile challenges Inventory (HRACI) and project success factors (PSF), and project management as a moderator. The study employed convenience and purposive sampling methods to collect data from 533 project managers working on CPEC projects. The Smart PLS 4 software was utilized to evaluate the hypotheses. The results of this study indicated that the direct effect of a PMEI is not significant on CPEC. However, through mediating variables, HRACI exhibited a negative and significant association, while PSF positively and significantly mediate the relationship among PMEI and CPEC. Furthermore, project management as a moderator has a significant and positive effect on PMEI and PSF, however, insignificant between PMEI and CPEC, and negatively significant among PMEI and HRACI. The findings of this study are of great significance for project managers and project leaders. They will need to acquire the skills to prevent issues from arising, particularly when conflicts emerge, in order to ensure the success of megaproject. Therefore, current study recommend that PMEI appears to have a vital role in social interactions, promoting emotions of trust, efficient communication, and cooperation with other project teams in high-stress work environments like CPEC. Lastly, theoretical and practical contributions are discussed, as well as research constraints and future research directions.

Introducción: El contexto tecnocientífico cubano actual promueve proyectos de ciencia, tecnología e innovación, que tributan al progreso del modelo de desarrollo económico social socialista que propone el país. Pero, en la práctica, estos proyectos evidencian poca sistematicidad en la evaluación de impacto social, lo que da al traste con la transformación social que se pretende. Debido a esto, se considera necesaria la superación de los profesionales que, desde las universidades cubanas, gestionan proyectos. Objetivo: Proponer un entrenamiento para el desarrollo de competencias en evaluación de impacto social para gestores de proyectos de las universidades cubanas. Materiales y métodos: El diagnóstico realizado con métodos científicos teóricos y con la aplicación de encuestas y entrevistas a gestores de proyectos, y el análisis documental a proyectos en ejecución y a sus resultados, así como a los documentos rectores del posgrado en Cuba, permitieron conformar la propuesta de entrenamiento que se presenta. Resultados: Se identificó un nivel bajo de conocimientos y habilidades en evaluación de impacto social de los proyectos, y una alta disposición hacia la superación profesional en el tema. Esto conduce a la propuesta de un entrenamiento que consta de acciones para el desarrollo de competencias en los gestores de proyecto. Conclusiones: El entrenamiento que se propone resulta una vía esencial para atender demandas y necesidades de superación profesional en torno a conocimientos, habilidades y valores, para la evaluación de impacto social por gestores de proyectos de las universidades cubanas.


Introduction: The current Cuban techno-scientific context promotes projects of science, technology and innovation, which contribute to the progress of the model of socialist social economic development the country proposes. But, in practice, these projects show little systematicity in the social impact assessment, which ruins the social transformation that is pretended. Due to this, it is considered necessary the upgrading of the professionals who manage projects of Cuban universities. Objective: To propose training for the development of skills in social impact assessment for project managers of Cuban universities. Materials and methods: The diagnosis, carried out with scientific-theoretical methods, and with the application of inquiries and interviews to project managers, and the documentary analysis of projects in execution and their results, as well as of leading documents of post-graduate studies in Cuba, allowed to elaborate the training proposal presented. Results: A low level of knowledge and skills in the social impact assessment of the projects and a high disposition towards professional upgrading on the topic were identified. This leads to the proposal of a training that consists on actions for the development of skills in project managers. Conclusions: The training proposed results an essential way to meet demands and needs of professional upgrading regarding knowledge, skills and values, for the assessment of the social impact by project managers of Cuban universities.

One of the organisational and employees' responses to the COVID-19 pandemic is a shift to virtual working models including the management of projects and project teams in virtual environments. However, little is known about the effect of personal and work characteristics on the psychological safety of project management professionals. This study explores the relationship between the personal and work characteristics of project managers on their psychological safety in virtual teams. Data for the study is collected from 104 project management professionals in the United Kingdom. SPSS is used to analyse and test a series of hypotheses. The study confirmed the significant relationship between the personal and work characteristics of the project managers and their psychological safety. The study provides an overview of the role of diversity, equality and inclusion on psychological safety among project managers; and proposes future research directions to understand and contribute to the psychological wellbeing of project managers working in virtual teams.

A project manager's emotional intelligence (EI) is essential to project success. However, the mechanism in this cause and effect remains a black box in extant literature. China is now the world's largest construction market, and figuring out the mechanism of construction project manager's (CPM's) EI on project success is meaningful for developing the global construction market. This study conducted an in-depth interview with 24 CPMs with more than 5-year experience in construction project management. The grounded theory was employed to profile the application of CPM's EI and to build the multilevel mechanism that explains the influence of CPM's EI on project success. The mechanism framework conforms to the existed input-process-output (IPO) theory. It consists of a team-level mechanism (including the positive team atmosphere, shared vision, and team cohesion) and an individual-level mechanism (i.e., organizational citizenship behavior directed at the organization, perceived supervisor support, trust in leader, and subordinate's psychological and emotional health). This study further proposed that the effect of this mechanism does not work immediately but develops with time passing. Implications for further research and project management practice are discussed in the end.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale, national eHealth services, such as the summary care record (SCR) and electronic prescriptions (e-prescriptions), have been implemented by project managers as Norwegian health authority initiatives. Few studies have been conducted on the large-scale implementation of eHealth services and the relationship between the implementers' work and the use of the tools in healthcare practices. Hence, there was a need to determine the project work with a focus on changes in practice. This study explores the implementation of the SCR and e-prescriptions from the perspective of project managers; how does the implementation work by project managers relate to institutional practices in large-scale initiatives? METHODS: Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were held with project managers in 2016 and 2018 and were recorded, transcribed, and coded according to the content. The analytical concepts of the "project" and "practice" were used to focus on tensions between the dimensions of time connecting historically established social practice and in situ actions. RESULTS: The eHealth initiatives were demonstrated to have been implemented as a part of the national strategy and achieved through close collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate of eHealth (NDE). Tensions arose in relation to task-oriented actions during the implementation of the project and the daily management thereafter. Further, the work tasks of the project managers were related to the dissemination of the tools while, in practice, the tools were related to actual use by professionals. The implementation of several projects simultaneously created tensions between the implementation of a tool and a specific practice, as well as between tools. CONCLUSION: The objectives set out by the project managers in relation to their work should be viewed as temporary, whereas a long-term objective should apply to the use of the tools. Hence, the work of implementing eHealth initiatives might call for a renewed definition of the empirical object. Identifying factors that affect uptake, such as gaps between the intended use of an object and in situ actions or historically established activities, might expedite the future success of national eHealth initiatives. The social aspect of institutional practice has a direct bearing on the potential of a project to be implemented successfully.
