RESUMO

The ability of soil to sequester carbon and reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations is limited and depends on the soil minerals and their interaction with the microbiota. Microbial activities are closely associated with the types and amounts of soil organic matter (SOM) and clay minerals that have functional groups that interact with energy in Vis NIR-SWIR and Mid-IR wavelengths. The main objective of this research was to determine, based on these spectral ranges, the relation between mineralogical and organic compounds, as their sequestration and specialization in soils from Brazil. It was possible to map microbiological activity by spectral transfer functions and digital soil mapping reaching R2 from 0.77 to 0.85. Multiple regression equations were constructed to quantify enzymatic activity, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), particulate organic matter (POM), and resistant forms of carbon, and SOM associated with the mineral fraction (MAOM). All these properties were detected by specific bands obtained with the recursive feature elimination (RFE) algorithm, reaching correlations from 0.64 to 0.98 in specific ranges. The prediction model of the carbon sequestration potential was adjusted with microbiological and mineralogical variables from Vis-NIR-SWIR and the Mid-IR spectral range. A SARAR double autoregressive model was adjusted with r 0.61 and to a spatial error model (SEM) with r 0.7. The explanatory variables were associated with kaolinite, hematite, goethite, gibbsite, and the abundance of fungi, actinomycetes, vesico-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, enzymatic activity of beta-glucosidase, urease and phosphatase, and POM. Among the microbiological variables, the general abundance of fungi was the most important, in contrast to enzymatic activity that was the least important. The interaction between the different maps constructed and historical land use allowed the identification of areas that contribute to sequestering new carbon and could be the key to climate change mitigation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To define percentile charts for arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), and cerebral oxygen saturation (crSO2) during the first 15 minutes after birth in neonates born very or extremely preterm and with favorable outcome. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a secondary-outcome analysis of neonates born preterm included in the Cerebral regional tissue Oxygen Saturation to Guide Oxygen Delivery in preterm neonates during immediate transition after birth III (COSGOD III) trial with visible cerebral oximetry measurements and with favorable outcome, defined as survival without cerebral injuries until term age. We excluded infants with inflammatory morbidities within the first week after birth. SpO2 was obtained by pulse oximetry, and electrocardiogram or pulse oximetry were used for measurement of HR. crSO2 was assessed with near-infrared spectroscopy. Measurements were performed during the first 15 minutes after birth. Percentile charts (10th to 90th centile) were defined for each minute. RESULTS: A total of 207 neonates born preterm with a gestational age of 29.7 (23.9-31.9) weeks and a birth weight of 1200 (378-2320) g were eligible for analyses. The 10th percentile of SpO2 at minute 2, 5, 10, and 15 was 32%, 52%, 83%, and 85%, respectively. The 10th percentile of HR at minute 2, 5, 10, and 15 was 70, 109, 126, and 134 beats/min, respectively. The 10th percentile of crSO2 at minute 2, 5, 20, and 15 was 15%, 27%, 59%, and 63%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new centile charts for SpO2, HR, and crSO2 for neonates born extremely or very preterm with favorable outcome. Implementing these centiles in guiding interventions during the stabilization process after birth might help to more accurately target oxygenation during postnatal transition period.

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of pre and postpartum DCAD on serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in peripartum Holstein cows. Blood samples were collected from 56 cows (18 primiparous and 38 multiparous) on days -7, +7, +14 and +28 relative to parturition, to determine serum levels of total and ionized calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and albumin; diet samples for determination of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and DCAD were collected at the same moments and urine samples were collected at day -7 for measurement of urinary pH. Prepartum DCAD was positively correlated with total calcium (p = 0.02) and with corrected total calcium (p = 0.01) at day -7. There was a negative correlation between prepartum DCAD and magnesium levels at day -7 (p = 0.02). No influence of prepartum DCAD on phosphataemia was observed. Postpartum DCAD did not correlate with serum mineral levels at any time point. Our results demonstrate that prepartum DCAD can influence calcium and magnesium homeostasis, but not phosphorus. In addition, parity and time period should be considered when evaluating serum levels of these minerals in Holstein cows during transition period.


Objetivou-se identificar o efeito da DCAD pré e pós-parto nos níveis séricos de cálcio, fósforo e magnésio, em vacas Holandesas em periparto. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 56 vacas (18 primiparas e 38 multiparas) nos dias -7, +7, +14 e +28 em relação ao parto, para determinação dos níveis séricos de cálcio total e ionizado, fósforo, magnésio e albumina; amostras de alimento foram coletadas nos mesmos momentos para determinação dos níveis cálcio, fósforo, magnésio e DCAD dietético; e amostras de urina foram coletadas no dia -7, para mensuração do pH urinário. A DCAD pré-parto foi positivamente correlacionada com cálcio total (P = 0,02) e com cálcio total corrigido (P = 0,01) no dia -7. Houve correlação negativa entre a DCAD pré-parto e os níveis de magnésio no momento -7 (P = 0,02). Não houve influência da DCAD pré-parto na fosfatemia. A DCAD pós-parto não se correlacionou com os níveis séricos de minerais em nenhum momento. Os resultados demonstram que a DCAD pré-parto pode influenciar na homeostase do cálcio e do magnésio, mas não do fósforo. Além disso, as variáveis paridade e tempo devem ser consideradas ao se avaliarem os níveis séricos desses minerais em bovinos leiteiros da raça Holandesa em transição.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The thrombin generation test (TGT) has shown promise for investigation of hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases. However, despite its potential, it still needs standardization. Moreover, few studies have established reference values for TGT parameters. In Brazil, these values have not yet been established. OBJECTIVE: To determine TGT performance and reference intervals for TGT parameters in healthy individuals. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted among participants in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto, ELSA-Brasil). METHODS: The reference sample consisted of 620 healthy individuals. The calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) method, under low and high tissue factor (TF) conditions, was used to assess thrombin generation. Test performance was analyzed using intra and interassay coefficients of variation (CV) and reference intervals were calculated using the nonparametric method proposed by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. RESULTS: The intraassay CV ranged from 1.4% to 2.2% and the interassay CV, 6.8% to 14.7%. The reference intervals for TGT parameters under low and high TF conditions were, respectively: lagtime: 3.0-10.3 and 1.4-3.7 min; endogenous thrombin potential (ETP): 1134.6-2517.9 and 1413.6-2658.0 nM.min; normalized ETP: 0.6-1.3 and 0.7-1.4; peak: 103.2-397.7 and 256.4-479.0 nM; normalized peak: 0.3-1.3 and 0.7-1.2; and time-to-peak: 5.6-16.0 and 3.4-6.7 min. These parameters were categorized relative to sex. Conclusion: TGT performance was adequate and the proposed reference intervals were similar to those of other studies. Our findings may be useful for consolidating the TGT, through contributing to its standardization and validation.

A significant fraction of Brazil's population has been exposed to drought in recent years, a situation that is expected to worsen in frequency and intensity due to climate change. This constitutes a current key environmental health concern, especially in densely urban areas such as several big cities and suburbs. For the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the short-term drought effects on weekly non-external, circulatory, and respiratory mortality was conducted in 13 major Brazilian macro-urban areas across 2000-2019. We applied quasi-Poisson regression models adjusted by temperature to explore the association between drought (defined by the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index) and the different mortality causes by location, sex, and age groups. We next conducted multivariate meta-analytical models separated by cause and population groups to pool individual estimates. Impact measures were expressed as the attributable fractions among the exposed population, from the relative risks (RRs). Overall, a positive association between drought exposure and mortality was evidenced in the total population, with RRs varying from 1.003 [95% CI: 0.999-1.007] to 1.010 [0.996-1.025] for non-external mortality related to moderate and extreme drought conditions, from 1.002 [0.997-1.007] to 1.008 [0.991-1.026] for circulatory mortality, and from 1.004 [0.995-1.013] to 1.013 [0.983-1.044] for respiratory mortality. Females, children, and the elderly population were the most affected groups, for whom a robust positive association was found. The study also revealed high heterogeneity between locations. We suggest that policies and action plans should pay special attention to vulnerable populations to promote efficient measures to reduce vulnerability and risks associated with droughts.

Objective: To establish reference ranges for the fetal left ventricle (LV) modified myocardial performance index (Mod-MPI), respective time periods, and right and left atrioventricular peak velocities between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation.Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 360 low-risk singleton pregnancies between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation. The LV Mod-MPI was calculated as (isovolumetric contraction time + isovolumetric relaxation time)/ejection time. Polynomial regression was used to obtain the best-fit using Mod-MPI and atrioventricular peak velocity measurements and gestational age (GA) with adjustments using the coefficient of determination (R2). The intra- and interobserver reliability was evaluated using the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC).Results: LV Mod-MPI (R2 = 0.026, p = .002) and isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT) (R2 = 0.036, p < .001) significantly increased with advancing GA. Isovolumetric contraction time (ICT) and ejection time (ET) did not significantly change with GA. RV and LV E wave, A wave, and E/A ratio significantly increased with GA (p < .001). The mean of each parameter ranged as follows: LV Mod-MPI (0.44-0.47 s), IRT (0.041-0.045 s), ICT (0.032-0.034 s), ET (0.167-0.167 s), RV E (30.2-46.91 cm/s), RV A (47.1-60.7 cm/s), RV E/A (0.65-0.78 cm/s), LV E (27.0-41.4 cm/s), LV A (43.2-53.8 cm/s), and LV E/A (0.63-0.78 cm/s). Only LV A wave measurements demonstrated an intraobserver CCC >0.80. The remaining intra- and interobserver reproducibility parameters demonstrated lower CCC.Conclusions: Reference values were replicated for the fetal LV Mod-MPI and LV and RV transvalvular peak velocities between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation.

ABSTRACT Objective: To measure the Achilles tendon length, thickness and cross-sectional area in asymptomatic adult Saudi participants and to investigate the possible changes in these measurements based on their different ages and body height. Methods: The prospective cohort study was done between January 2014 and March 2015. A total of 200 asymptomatic participants with 175 males (87.5%) and 25 females (12.5%) between the ages of 14 and 65 years, with the mean age of 25 ± 1.5 years, were scanned at two radiology departments. Ultrasound (US) scans for the Achilles tendons were performed using a Hitachi (EZU-MT30-S1 HI Vision Avius, Hitachi, Japan) US machine. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used to analyse the results. Results: There was no significant difference in the length, cross-sectional area and thickness of the Achilles tendons among the participants of different ages; however, the cross-sectional area of Achilles tendons of the older participants (≥ 47 years) was higher than that of the participants of the younger age groups. Moreover, there was no correlation between the length, cross-sectional area, and thickness of the Achilles tendons and their body heights; however, the participants of ≥ 153 cm in height showed an increase in their Achilles tendon cross-sectional areas. Conclusion: Ultrasound is a useful imaging tool in the assessment of the Achilles tendons. The normal variations of the tendon morphological characteristics should be considered in the clinical diagnosis. Additional studies on the correlations among the Achilles tendon length, thickness and cross-sectional areas of ethnicity of the participants in Saudi Arabia are suggested.

Em humanos, o pH sanguíneo é mantido em uma faixa estreita, entre 7,35 e 7,45. Diferentes mecanismos bioquímicos, de forma harmônica, atuam para a manutenção do pH fisiológico. Múltiplos processos patológicos podem promover alterações no pH e nos gases sanguíneos, caracterizando acidose (pH <7,35) ou alcalose (pH >7,45). A ruptura da homeostasia do pH é identificada pela medição do pH, pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono (pCO2), concentração do bicarbonato (HCO3-) e, adicionalmente, com a pressão de oxigênio (pO2) em sangue arterial, processo descrito como gasometria arterial. Este artigo revisa os principais elementos associados a compreensão das alterações e tem como objetivo central apresentar uma abordagem didática e intuitiva para a caracterização destes distúrbios; e também comenta sobre ferramentais digitais destinadas a interpretações das alterações da gasometria arterial que também são abordados, como programas para computadores em ambiente web e aplicativos para telefonia móvel.


In humans, blood pH is kept in a narrow range, between 7.35 to 7.45. Different biochemical mechanisms, in a harmonic way, act to maintain the physiological pH. Multiple pathological processes can promote changes in pH and blood gases, characterizing acidosis (pH <7.35) or alkalosis (pH> 7.45). The rupture of pH homeostasis is identified by measuring pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), bicarbonate concentration (HCO3 - and, in addition, with the pressure of oxygen (pO2) in arterial blood, a process described as gasometry arterial. This article reviews the main elements associated with the understanding of acid-base changes and aims to present a didactic and intuitive approach to the characterization of these disorders; and also comments on digital tools for the interpretation of alterations in arterial blood gases are also covered, such as programs for computers in a web environment and applications for mobile phone.

BACKGROUND: Vertebrates exhibit diverse sex determination systems and reptiles stand out by having highly variable sex determinations that include temperature-dependent and genotypic sex determination (TSD and GSD, respectively). Theory predicts that populations living in either highly variable or cold climatic conditions should evolve genotypic sex determination to buffer the populations from extreme sex ratios, yet these fundamental predictions have not been tested across a wide range of taxa. RESULTS: Here, we use phylogenetic analyses of 213 reptile species representing 38 families (TSD = 101 species, GSD = 112 species) and climatic data to compare breeding environments between reptiles with GSD versus TSD. We show that GSD and TSD are confronted with the same level of climatic fluctuation during breeding seasons. However, TSD reptiles are significantly associated with warmer climates. We found a strong selection on the breeding season length that minimises exposure to cold and fluctuating climate. Phylogenetic path analyses comparing competing evolutionary hypotheses support that transitions in sex determination systems influenced the ambient temperature at which the species reproduces and nests. In turn, this interaction affects other variables such as the duration of the breeding season and life-history traits. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results challenge long-standing hypotheses about the association between sex determination and climate variability. We also show that ambient temperature is important during breeding seasons and it helps explain the effects of sex determination systems on the geographic distribution of extant reptile species.

Objectives This study aimed to establish reference ranges for fetal mitral, tricuspid, and interventricular septum annular plane systolic excursions (MAPSE, TAPSE, and SAPSE) in normal pregnant women between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation. Methods This prospective and cross-sectional study included 360 low-risk singleton pregnancies between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation. MAPSE, TAPSE, and SAPSE were measured by M-mode in real time in an apical or basal four-chamber view through placing the cursor at the atrioventricular junction, marked by the valve rings at the tricuspid, mitral, and basal septum, respectively. A regression analysis was done to determine the appropriate polynomial equation model for both measurements and standard deviation (SD) values in relation to gestational age (GA). The intra- and inter-observer reproducibility was evaluated using the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and limits of agreement (LoA). Results There was a significant positive correlation between MAPSE (r=0.705, p<0.0001), TAPSE (r=0.804, p<0.0001), and SAPSE (r=0.690, p<0.0001) and GA. The mean of each parameter ranged as follows: 2.87-5.56 mm, MAPSE; 3.98-8.07 mm, TAPSE; and 2.34-4.21 mm, SAPSE. Poor/moderate intra- and inter-observer reliability (CCC between 0.70 and 0.90) and poor/moderate agreement of all the tested parameters were evaluated (LoA between 10 and 50%). Conclusions Reference values were established for the fetal MAPSE, TAPSE, and SAPSE between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks of gestation in low-risk pregnant women. These parameters showed poor/moderate reproducibility.

BACKGROUND: Reference values for umbilical artery Doppler indices are used clinically to assess fetal well-being. However, many studies that have produced reference charts have important methodologic limitations, and these result in significant heterogeneity of reported reference ranges. OBJECTIVES: To produce international gestational age-specific centiles for umbilical artery Doppler indices based on longitudinal data and the same rigorous methodology used in the original Fetal Growth Longitudinal Study of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project. STUDY DESIGN: In Phase II of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project (the INTERBIO-21st Study), we prospectively continued enrolling pregnant women according to the same protocol from 3 of the original populations in Pelotas (Brazil), Nairobi (Kenya), and Oxford (United Kingdom) that had participated in the Fetal Growth Longitudinal Study. Women with a singleton pregnancy were recruited at <14 weeks' gestation, confirmed by ultrasound measurement of crown-rump length, and then underwent standardized ultrasound every 5±1 weeks until delivery. From 22 weeks of gestation umbilical artery indices (pulsatility index, resistance index, and systolic/diastolic ratio) were measured in a blinded fashion, using identical equipment and a rigorously standardized protocol. Newborn size at birth was assessed using the international INTERGROWTH-21st Standards, and infants had detailed assessment of growth, nutrition, morbidity, and motor development at 1 and 2 years of age. The appropriateness of pooling data from the 3 study sites was assessed using variance component analysis and standardized site differences. Umbilical artery indices were modeled as functions of the gestational age using an exponential, normal distribution with second-degree fractional polynomial smoothing; goodness of fit for the overall models was assessed. RESULTS: Of the women enrolled at the 3 sites, 1629 were eligible for this study; 431 (27%) met the entry criteria for the construction of normative centiles, similar to the proportion seen in the original fetal growth longitudinal study. They contributed a total of 1243 Doppler measures to the analysis; 74% had 3 measures or more. The healthy low-risk status of the population was confirmed by the low rates of preterm birth (4.9%) and preeclampsia (0.7%). There were no neonatal deaths and satisfactory growth, health, and motor development of the infants at 1 and 2 years of age were documented. Only a very small proportion (2.8%-6.5%) of the variance of Doppler indices was due to between-site differences; in addition, standardized site difference estimates were marginally outside this threshold in only 1 of 27 comparisons, and this supported the decision to pool data from the 3 study sites. All 3 Doppler indices decreased with advancing gestational age. The 3rd, 5th 10th, 50th, 90th, 95th, and 97th centiles according to gestational age for each of the 3 indices are provided, as well as equations to allow calculation of any value as a centile and z scores. The mean pulsatility index according to gestational age = 1.02944 + 77.7456*(gestational age)-2 - 0.000004455*gestational age3. CONCLUSION: We present here international gestational age-specific normative centiles for umbilical artery Doppler indices produced by studying healthy, low-risk pregnant women living in environments with minimal constraints on fetal growth. The centiles complement the existing INTERGROWTH-21st Standards for assessment of fetal well-being.

A species is not native outside its native range, but native range is not precisely defined. The invasion literature contains wide discussion of the core concepts such as naturalization, invasiveness, and ecological impact, but the concept of native range has received so little attention that a formal definition does not exist. I considered, among other impediments to a formal definition of native range, the sometimes arbitrariness of the spatial and temporal limits assigned to native range. Broad questions that remain include whether invasion theory can be used to define the native range for species without non-native ranges.


Replanteamiento del Concepto de Distribución Nativa Resumen Una especie es no nativa fuera de su distribución nativa, pero este último concepto no está definido con precisión. La literatura sobre las especies invasoras contiene amplias discusiones sobre los conceptos centrales, como la naturalización, la invasividad y el impacto ecológico, pero el concepto de distribución nativa ha recibido tan poca atención que una definición formal no existe dentro de la literatura. Consideré, entre otros impedimentos para la obtención de una definición formal de distribución nativa, la arbitrariedad ocasional de los límites espaciales y temporales asignados a la distribución nativa. Las preguntas generales que permanecen sin respuesta incluyen si se puede utilizar la teoría de la invasión para definir la distribución nativa para las especies que no cuentan con distribuciones no nativas.

Introduction: Body size is an essential trait for endotherms to face the physiological requirements of cold, so there is a tendency to large body size at high altitudes and latitudes, known as Bergmann's rule. However, the validity of this ecomorphological rule to small-bodied endotherms across altitudinal gradients is poorly known. Objective: To understand the effects of environmental variation on body size, we assessed whether interspecific variation in body size of small tropical endotherms follows Bergmann's rule along tropical altitudinal gradients. Methods: We compiled data on elevational ranges and body masses for 133 species of hummingbirds of Colombia. We then assessed the association between body mass and mid-point of the altitudinal distribution using phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS) analyses under different evolutionary models. Results: We found a decelerating rate of evolution for body size since the Early Burst model of evolution provided a better fit to body mass data. For elevational range, we found a slow and constant rate since Pagel's lambda model provided a better fit to the mid-point of the altitudinal distribution data. Besides, phylogenetic regression analysis indicated that body mass and the altitudinal range of hummingbirds are associated through the phylogeny, with a positive but slight association (R2= 0.036). Conclusions: We found that body mass and altitude of hummingbirds are positively related, which is in agreement with expectations under Bergmann's rule. However, this association was weaker than expected for small and non-passerine birds like hummingbirds. Thus, our results suggest that environmental changes across altitudinal gradients do not strongly influence body mass in small tropical endotherms as hummingbirds.


Introducción: El tamaño corporal es un rasgo importante para determinar la respuesta de los endotermos a los requerimientos que exigen las zonas frías, por lo cual se espera una tendencia hacia el incremento del tamaño corporal al aumentar la altitud y la latitud. Sin embargo, se conoce poco acerca de la validez de esta regla ecomorfológica, conocida como la regla de Bergmann, para endotermos pequeños en gradientes altitudinales tropicales. Objetivo: Con el fin de entender los efectos de la variación ambiental sobre el tamaño corporal, se evaluó sí la variación interespecífica en la masa corporal de endotermos tropicales pequeños se ajusta a la regla de Bergmann a lo largo de gradientes de elevación. Métodos: Se compilaron datos sobre los rangos de distribución altitudinal y los tamaños corporales de 133 especies de colibríes en Colombia. Posteriormente, se evaluó la asociación entre la masa corporal y el punto medio de distribución altitudinal de los colibríes mediante análisis de mínimos cuadrados generalizados filogenéticos (PGLS) bajo diferentes modelos evolutivos. Resultados: La evolución de la masa corporal se ajustó mejor a un modelo de evolución Early Burst, mientras que el rango de elevación al modelo evolutivo lambda de Pagel; lo que indica que la tasa de evolución es desacelerada para el tamaño del cuerpo, mientras es lenta y constante para el rango de elevación. Además, el análisis de regresión filogenética indica que la masa corporal y el rango de elevación están positiva y ligeramente asociados (R2 = 0.036). Conclusiones: De acuerdo con lo esperado por la regla de Bergmann, los resultados indican que los colibríes tienden a ser más grandes a mayores altitudes. Sin embargo, esta asociación es más débil de lo esperado para aves no paseriformes de tamaño pequeño como los colibríes.Por lo tanto, los resultados sugieren que las variaciones ambientales a lo largo de gradientes de elevación no tienen una influencia fuerte sobre el tamaño corporal de endotermos pequeños como los colibríes.

The Loasoideae is the largest clade in the Loasaceae. This subfamily is widespread throughout the Neotropics and centered in the Andes, presenting an excellent opportunity to study diversification across much of temperate and mid to high-elevation areas of South America. Despite that, no studies have addressed the historical biogeography of the Loasoideae to date, leaving an important knowledge gap in this plant group. Here, we used four plastid markers (i.e., trnL-trnF, matK, trnS-trnG, and rps16) and sequenced 170 accessions (134 ingroup taxa) to infer the phylogeny of Loasoideae. We then used this phylogeny as basis to estimate divergence times using an uncorrelated relaxed molecular clock approach and seven fossils as primary calibration points. We employed the Dispersal-Extinction-Cladogenesis (DEC) approach to reconstruct the ancestral ranges of the subfamily. Our results indicate that stem Loasoideae diverged from its sister group in the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleocene (ca. 83-62 Ma). The crown node of the whole clade goes back to the Middle Paleocene to Middle Eocene (ca. 60-45 Ma), corresponding to the earliest diversification events of the extant groups, prior to most of the Andean orogeny and roughly coinciding with the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. On the other hand, the crown nodes of most genera appear to have originated in the Oligocene and Miocene (median ages: 28-10 Ma). The diversification of some extant lineages appears to have happened in parallel to Andean uplift pulses that seem to have had an effect on the orogeny and concomitant establishment of new habitats and latitudinal corridors. The most likely ancestral areas retrieved for crown Loasoideae, are the tropical Andes and Pacific arid coast. Most of the extant clades have remained restricted to their ancestral areas. Transoceanic Long Distance Dispersal appears to have been involved in the arrival of Loasoid ancestors to South America, and in the distribution of the small clades Kissenia in Africa and Plakothira on the Marquesas Archipelago. The results presented here suggest that the historical biogeography of the continental scale radiation of Loasoideae, follows the sequence and timing of the development of temperate and mid to high-elevation habitats across South America during the Tertiary.

AIM: To understand how disturbance-here defined as a transient reduction in competition-can shape plant distributions along elevation gradients. Theory suggests that disturbance may increase elevation ranges, especially at the lower range limits, through reduced competitive exclusion. Nevertheless, to date this relationship remains unclear. LOCATION: Mountains of Costa Rica. METHODS: We compared the elevation range of woody stems over 10 cm dbh ("trees") observed in plots along two transects spanning a range of elevations in secondary (regrowth) and old-growth forest (409 and 249 species, respectively). We also estimated these elevation ranges using nationwide data. In addition, we examined the influence of stem size and plot scale basal area (as a measure of competition) on species elevation range limits in the two gradients. RESULTS: In general, tree species ranges increased with elevation. Species in the secondary forest had broader elevation ranges (100-318 m broader than species in the old-growth forest; Wilcoxon: p-value <.001). Also, in the secondary transect, individuals with greater diameters had broader elevation ranges than those observed as smaller trees (137 m broader; Kruskal-Wallis: p-value = .03). The lower range limit of species occurred more frequently in plots with lower (vs. higher) basal area than expected by chance in both forest types. We also observed higher elevation upper limits in old growth, but not in secondary forests, with lower (vs. higher) basal area. MAIN CONCLUSION: Disturbance relaxes the constraints imposed by competition and extends effective elevation ranges of species, particularly those in secondary forest, to warmer and cooler climates (minimum increase equivalent to about 0.6-1.4°C). Thus, suitable disturbance may assist species persistence under climate change. We believe this is the first study indicating a consistent relation between disturbance and woody plant species distributions along elevation gradients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of screening and serial neutrophil counts in predicting the absence/presence of late-onset sepsis (LOS) in infants with central venous catheters. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (2009-2013) at Parkland Hospital with a central venous catheter and ≥1 LOS evaluations. Infants were categorized as proven or suspect LOS or uninfected based on results of blood cultures, clinical illness, and duration of antibiotics. Receiver operating curves (ROCs) were constructed to predict the absence or presence of LOS using Manroe reference ranges for total and immature neutrophils and the immature to total neutrophil ratio at 0, 12, and 24 hours after blood culture and the neutrophil value score, which assesses serial values. RESULTS: Of the 497 infants with a central venous catheter, 179 underwent ≥1 LOS evaluations, and 140 of 179 (78%) had ≥1 complete evaluations (2 blood cultures and neutrophil values at 0, 12, and 24 hours), resulting in 188 complete LOS evaluations. The gestational age was 28 ± 4 weeks and LOS evaluation occurred at 29 ± 34 days (SD; 4-197 days). Sixty-one (35%) infants had proven LOS, 48 (23%) were suspect, and 71 (38%) were noninfected. ROC comparing proven vs noninfected was ≤0.56 for total neutrophils, immature neutrophils, and immature to total neutrophil ratio at 0, 12, and 24 hours and similar for proven + suspect vs noninfected. ROC for neutrophil value scores and absence of LOS was 0.56. CONCLUSIONS: Screening neutrophil values are poor predictors of LOS in neonates with a central venous catheter, as are serial neutrophils and the neutrophil value score. Alternative biomarkers are needed.

In the current study, Isospora sagittulae McQuistion and Capparella, 1992 (Protozoa: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) is reported from white-shouldered fire-eyes Pyriglena leucoptera (Vieillot, 1818) in the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. To date, this coccidian species was described from antbirds in Ecuador and Brazilian Amazon. In this sense, oocysts and measurements of the description of I. sagittulae from Amazonian antbirds were required from the deposit for comparison between samples from the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. The morphology was similar in all aspects, despite the polymorphism associated with the oocyst shape. DNA sequences for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) locus of the oocysts had similarity of 100%. Therefore, these strong morphological, molecular, and ecological equivalences ensure the unique identification of I. sagittulae. Finally, this finding reveals the wide distribution of I. sagittulae in the Neotropical region and indicates that other antbirds in the Brazilian Cerrado should disperse I. sagittulae to the Amazon and Atlantic Forest.

BACKGROUND: Gene flow restrictions between populations of Aedes albifasciatus, the vector of Western equine encephalitis and Dirophilaria immitis, have been described in the central region of Argentina. Genetic and eco-physiological variations usually result in local forms reflecting the climatic regions. Mosquito wings and their different parts have ecological functions in flight and communication. Therefore, wing shape could be considered an aspect of sexual dimorphism, and its eco-physiological responses can be expressed as morphological changes induced by the environment. METHODS: To compare the geographical and sexual variations with respect to wing shape and size in two Ae. albifasciatus populations from contrasting climates of Argentina (temperate: Buenos Aires, and the arid steppe of Patagonia: Sarmiento), the wings of adults reared in thermal trays at different constant temperatures (10-29 °C) were analyzed. RESULTS: The wing size of Ae. albifasciatus showed inverse linear relationships with the rearing thermal condition and higher slope for Buenos Aires. In the cool range (10-17 °C), geographical size variations responded to the converse Bergmann's rule, where Buenos Aires individuals were larger than those from Sarmiento. Sexual shape dimorphism occurred in both populations while geographical variation in shape was observed in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: Buenos Aires individuals showed greater response sensitivity with respect to the size-temperature relation than those from Sarmiento. The converse Bergmann's rule in size variation could be due to a higher development rate in Sarmiento to produce more cohorts in the limited favorable season. The shape could be more relevant with respect to the size in the study of population structures due to the size being more liable to vary due to changes in the environment. The geographical variations with respect to morphology could be favored by the isolation between populations and adaptations to the environmental conditions. Our results demonstrate that the shape and size of wing provide useful phenotypic information for studies related to sexual and environmental adaptations.

The parasitism of Ixodes loricatus Neumann on white-eared opposum, Didelphis albiventris Lund, was analysed in the southern ranges of both. In central Argentina, 118 wild opossums were captured from 2005 to 2012. Adults of I. loricatus were collected (prevalence = 66.1%, mean = 7.03, median = 4), but no immature stage. Tick infestation was not affected by sex (p = 0.27) or age (p = 0.37) of hosts. In line with previous studies about seasonality of larvae and nymphs of I. loricatus, adult tick infestation showed no seasonal trend. This lack of seasonal pattern of infestation for all parasitic stages of I. loricatus may indicate a life cycle governed by nidicolous behaviour, in such a way that this habit would contribute to minimize the influence of external environmental variables. The tick sex ratio was female biased, with two females per one male (p = 0.002). The absence of I. loricatus immatures on D. albiventris suggests that in the study region there is clear segregation of immatures in rodents and adults in marsupials.

Resumen Los reportes sobre diversidad de plantas en los bosques tropicales suelen estar restringidos a árboles u otros grupos de plantas leñosas por encima de cierto diámetro del tallo. Sin embargo, otros estudios que incluyen todas las formas de vida sin restricciones de tamaño de los individuos, indican claramente que las plantas no leñosas son igual de importantes. En este estudio se reporta la Riqueza total de especies de plantas vasculares (RTE) en una parcela de una hectárea en un bosque andino del noroccidente de Colombia (6º12'48"N & 75º29'32"O); adicionalmente evaluamos la contribución de los diferentes hábitos de crecimiento a la RTE y el efecto del tamaño de las plantas. Se censaron todos los individuos con diámetro del tronco (D) ≥ 5 cm en 1 ha, y todas las plantas vasculares de todos los tamaños, incluyendo epífitas, en una muestra de 0.25 hectáreas. Se registró un total de 14 545 individuos distribuidos en 318 especies, 72 familias (considerando Pteridophyta como un solo grupo) y 171 géneros. El 99.7 % de las especies son menores de 10 cm de (D) y el 94.4 % son menores a 2.5 cm de (D). Las especies no arbóreas (hierbas terrestres, epífitas y escandentes) representan el 54.3% del total de especies registradas en la parcela, lo que indica que son un componente clave de la estructura, composición y riqueza de este bosque montano neotropical. Estos resultados confirman reportes similares para otros bosques tropicales. Concluimos que para conocer con más detalle la diversidad de florística de un sitio es recomendable: 1) ampliar el rango de tamaño de las plantas considerado comúnmente en los inventarios florísticos y 2) incluir las especies no leñosas; esta información es crucial para tomar mejores decisiones en los esfuerzos de conservación a escala local y global.


Abstract Studies of plant diversity in tropical forests are usually restricted to trees or other groups of woody plants above a certain stem diameter. However, surveys that include all forms of live plants with no restrictions on their sizes, clearly indicate that non-woody plants are equally important. In this study, we reported the total species richness of vascular plants species (TSR) in one hectare plot in an Andean forest in Northwestern Colombia (6º12'48"N & 75º29 32"W). We evaluated the relative contribution of the different growth habits and the effect of the plant size, to TSR. We measured all individuals with diameter (D) ≥ 5 cm in the hectare and all the vascular plants of all sizes, including epiphytes, in a subsample of 0.25 ha. A total of 14 545 individuals distributed in 318 species, 72 families (considering Pteridophyta as one group) and 171 genera were registered. Most of the species showed a (D) < 10 cm (99.7 %) and < 2.5 cm (94.4 %). The no-arboreal species (ground herbs, epiphytes and vines) represented 54.3 % of the total species reported in the plot, indicating that they are important in the structure, composition and species richness of this montane forest. Our results coincide with similar studies in other tropical forests. We concluded that to get a more detailed knowledge of the floristic diversity of a site, it is advisable to: 1) amplify the size range of the plants generally considered in the floristic inventories and 2) to include non-woody species.
