Background: The study was conducted to assess the impact of a workshop intervention designed to enhance presentation skills of ophthalmology fellows in training. Methods: A 10-hour workshop on presentation skills was conducted for ophthalmology fellows in the 2022 cohort at a single institution. An email was sent to the 2022 cohort to recruit participants. A total of 29 fellows (19 females, 10 males) volunteered to participate in the study. Participants completed a self-rating questionnaire to assess improvement in their presentation skills at four different time points of the workshop. The self-rating questionnaire utilized a ten-point rating scale (1-10) and evaluated properties and content (PC) and soft skills (SS). Data were analysed using SPSS software. Friedman and post-hoc tests compared self-ratings at four time points. Statistical significance was set at p-value < 0.05. Results: Both properties & content (PC) and soft skills (SS) showed significant difference (p < 0.001) post workshop compared to earlier stages. The higher self-rating (PC4 and SS4) highlights increased awareness towards the scope of improving the presentation after the workshop intervention. Conclusions: Presentation skills empower medical professionals to better communicate with diverse audiences, demonstrating their currency in medical knowledge, lobbying for correct understanding, and bringing praxis to pedagogy. The findings support the integration of similar workshops into medical curricula to foster well-rounded medical professionals.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective noninvasive neuromodulation technique for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the efficacy of rTMS varies widely between individuals. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to the response to rTMS in PD patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the response of 70 idiopathic PD patients who underwent rTMS for 14 consecutive days targeting the supplementary motor area (SMA) in either an open-label trail (n = 31) or a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (RCT) (n = 39). The motor symptoms of PD patients were assessed by the United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRSIII). Based on previous studies, the UPDRSIII were divided into six symptom clusters: axial dysfunction, resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia affecting right and left extremities, and postural tremor. Subsequently, the efficacy of rTMS to different motor symptom clusters and clinical predictors were analyzed in these two trails. Results: After 14 days of treatment, only the total UPDRSIII scores and rigidity scores improved in both the open-label trial and the RCT. The results of multiple linear regression analysis indicated that baseline rigidity scores (ß = 0.37, p = 0.047) and RMT (ß = 0.30, P = 0.02) positively predicted the improvement of UPDRSIII. The baseline rigidity score (ß = 0.55, P < 0.0001) was identified as an independent factor to predict the improvement of rigidity. Conclusion: This study demonstrated significant improvements in total UPDRSIII scores and rigidity after 14-day treatment, with baseline rigidity scores and RMT identified as predictors of treatment response, underscoring the need for individualized therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI), ranging from minor impacts to severe cases, affects temporal and frontal brain areas, contributing to mortality and disability worldwide. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) evaluates consciousness levels, aiding in prioritizing emergency care, while the Disability Rating Score (DRS) assesses overall function, particularly in severe cases, with greater sensitivity than GCS for clinical changes in TBI patients. OBJECTIVES: To correlate various factors with each other in patients presented with severe TBIs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective study analyzed data from patients with severe TBIs admitted to the hospital from February 2023 to April 2024. Patients' demographic and clinical data, including GCS and DRS scores, were collected. Statistical analysis, including logistic regression, assessed mortality predictors. RESULTS: The study revealed significant correlations (p<0.05) between age and marital status (p=0.002) and surgery (p=0.003). Surgery also correlated significantly with the mechanism of injury (p<0.001). Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between GCS after 24 hours and change in GCS (p<0.001), while a positive correlation existed between DRS after 24 hours and DRS on the 14th day (p<0.001). These findings highlight the complex interplay between demographic factors, medical interventions, and clinical outcomes in TBI patients. CONCLUSION: The study found that older individuals, particularly those involved in road traffic accidents, had poorer recovery outcomes and higher rates of surgery, with a strong correlation between changes in GCS and DRS scores.

The error-speed effect describes the observation that the speed of recognition errors in a first binary recognition task predicts the response accuracy in a subsequent two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) task that comprises the erroneously judged items of the first task. So far, the effect has been primarily explained by the assumption that some error responses result from misleading memory evidence. However, it is also possible that the effect arises because participants remember and use their response times from the binary task to solve the 2AFC task. Furthermore, the phenomenon is quite new and its robustness or generalizability across other recognition tasks (e.g., a confidence-rating task) remains to be demonstrated. The aim of the present study is to address these limitations by introducing a new variant of the error-speed effect, replacing the 2AFC task with a confidence-rating task (Experiment 1), and by reversing task order (Experiment 2) to test whether participants employ a response-time strategy. In both experiments, we collected data using a sequential probability ratio t-test procedure and found evidence in favor of the hypothesis that the speed of binary recognition errors predicts confidence ratings for the same stimulus. These results attest to the robustness and generalizability of the error-speed effect and reveal that at least some errors must be due to systematically misleading memory evidence.

Pedagogical work, especially with preschool children, is one of the most stressful professions, and the incidence of stress-related illnesses among preschool teachers is higher than in the general population. The aim of this cross-sectional study, conducted between October 2018 and April 2019, was to examine the prevalence of the burnout syndrome in a representative sample of 482 preschool teachers in Serbia and the factors associated with it. For this purpose, the participants completed a questionnaire composed of six sections: the socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics, health and lifestyle characteristics, workplace and employment characteristics; Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI); Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). The frequency of the total burnout was 27.1 %. The frequency of burnout on the CBI was 25.4 % for personal burnout, 27.0 % for work-related burnout, and 23.4 % for client-related burnout. Multivariate logistic regression analysis with total burnout as an outcome variable showed that being single (OR: 0.18; 95 % CI: 0.05-0.58), having poor (OR: 6.05; 95 % CI: 1.05-34.91), or average (OR: 3.60; 95 % CI: 1.57-8.25) self-rated health, not having didactic/play tools (OR: 2.71; 95 % CI: 1.21-6.04), having a higher score on the BDI (OR: 1.19; 95 % CI: 1.09-1.29) or SAS (OR: 1.10; 95 % CI: 1.03-1.18) was significantly associated with the total burnout among our participants. Our study shows the worryingly high prevalence of the burnout syndrome among preschool teachers in Serbia and points to its association with mental health issues, depression, and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the globus pallidus interna (GPi) has been shown to significantly improve motor symptoms for the treatment of medication-refractory Parkinson's disease. Yet, heterogeneity in clinical outcomes persists, possibly due to suboptimal target identification within the GPi. By leveraging robust sampling of the GPi and 6-month postsurgical outcomes, this study aims to determine optimal symptom-specific GPi DBS targets. METHODS: In this study, the authors analyzed the anatomical lead location and 6-month postsurgical, double-blinded outcome measures of 86 patients who underwent bilateral GPi DBS. These patients were selected from the multicenter Veterans Affairs (VA)/National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) 468 study to identify the optimal target zones ("sweet spots") for the control of overall motor (United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale [UPDRS]-III), axial, tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia symptoms. Lead coordinates were normalized to Montreal Neurological Institute space and the optimal target zones were identified and validated using a leave-one-patient-out approach. RESULTS: The authors' findings revealed statistically significant optimal target zones for UPDRS-III (R = 0.37, p < 0.001), axial (R = 0.22, p = 0.042), rigidity (R = 0.20, p = 0.021), and bradykinesia (R = 0.23, p = 0.004) symptoms. These zones were localized within the primary motor and premotor subdivisions of the GPi. Interestingly, these zones extended beyond the GPi lateral border into the GPi-globus pallidus externa (GPe) lamina and into the GPe, but they did not reach the GPi ventral border, challenging traditional surgical approaches based on pallidotomies. CONCLUSIONS: Drawing upon a robust dataset, this research effectively delineates specific optimal target zones for not only overall motor improvement but also symptom subscores. These insights hold the potential to enhance the precision of targeting in subsequent bilateral GPi DBS surgical procedures.

AIM: To investigate the quality of life of women with endometriosis before treatment and 3 months after the start of surgical and/or conservative treatment. SAMPLE AND METHODOLOGY: The sample comprised of 38 patients, of whom 26 underwent surgical treatment, 6 had pharmacological treatment, and 6 had both surgical and pharmacological treatment. The Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30) questionnaire in the Czech version and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) were used to assess quality of life. The questionnaires were completed before treatment and 3 months into the treatment. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: When comparing quality of life with the EHP-30 questionnaire, 3 months after the start of treatment, significantly better quality of life scores were found in all domains except the domain "Infertility." Statistically significant improvement was observed in the domains of "Control and powerlessness," "Emotional well-being," and "Pain" (P < 0.0001). Pain assessment using NRS showed subjective improvement in pain during menstruation, outside menstruation, during intercourse, micturition, and defecation. Statistically significant improvement was reported in pain during menstruation and outside menstruation (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Treatment of endometriosis improves the quality of life and also leads to a subjective reduction of pain intensity as one of the main symptoms of the disease.

OBJECTIVE: The Center for Neurologic Study Bulbar Function Scale (CNS-BFS) was specifically designed as a self-reported measure of bulbar function. The purpose of this research was to validate the Chinese translation of the CNS-BFSC as an effective measurement for the Chinese population with ALS. METHODS: A total of 111 ALS patients were included in this study. The CNS-BFSC score, three bulbar function items from the ALSFRS-R, and visual analog scale (VAS) score for speech, swallowing and salivation were assessed in the present study. Forty-six ALS patients were retested on the same scale 5-10 days after the first evaluation. RESULTS: The CNS-BFSC sialorrhea, speech and swallowing subscores were separately correlated with the VAS subscores (p < 0.001). The CNS-BFSC total score and sialorrhea and speech scores were significantly correlated with the ALSFRS-R bulbar subscore (p < 0.001). The CNS-BFSC total score and ALSFRS-R bulbar subscale score were highly predictive of a clinician diagnosis of impaired bulbar function (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.947 and 0.911, respectively; p < 0.001). A cutoff value for the CNS-BFSC total score was selected by maximizing Youden's index; this cutoff score was 33, with 86.4% sensitivity and 93.3% specificity. The CNS-BFSC total score and the sialorrhea, speech and swallowing subscores had good-retest reliability (p > 0.05). The Cronbach's α of the CNS-BFSC was 0.972. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the CNS-BFSC has acceptable efficacy and reliability for the assessment of bulbar dysfunction in ALS patients.

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are neurological disorders that occur in close association with tumors without direct metastasis or invasion of the tumors and in which anti-neural antibodies may be present. Cerebellar ataxia is a common form of PNS in patients with breast cancer. However, reports of symptom improvement with breast cancer treatment are more common in patients with positive anti-neural antibodies and are rarely seen in those with negative anti-neural antibodies. In addition, there have been few quantitative evaluations of symptom improvement. We report a case in which neurological symptoms significantly improved after surgical treatment for breast cancer. The patient was a 78-years-old woman with subacute progressive cerebellar ataxia. A subsequent diagnosis of breast cancer led to the diagnosis of "PNS probable". A comprehensive search for anti-neural antibodies was negative in all cases. The quantitative index of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) score, a standard evaluation method for ataxia in spinocerebellar degeneration, improved after breast cancer surgery. This case may provide a rationale for treating breast cancer patients negative for anti-neural antibodies, with the possibility of improving neurological symptoms.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of silicone earplugs in protecting workers exposed to noise in a typical manufacturing environment, and to provide training interventions for workers who do not achieve the anticipated noise reduction levels, as well as examining the spectral characteristics of earplug attenuation. Methods: From June to August 2022, a total of 294 noise-exposed workers in two manufacturing enterprises equipped with the same type of earplug were studied by cluster sampling method, by conducting questionnaire surveys, collecting data, fitting tests, and providing trainings, the current noise exposure levels of workers in the industry as well as the perception about the earplug were understood. Additionally, the attenuation before and after intervention in workplace were measured, the spectral characteristics of noise reduction were were described and compared. Results: The percentage of workers with Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) of 0 is 32.7% (96/294), and the baseline pass rates are all below 60%. There were no significant differences in pass rates based on gender, age, noise exposure, education level, or cognition of earplug effectiveness. After adjusting the way that earplugs are worn or changing the type of earplugs, all workers were able to meet their noise reduction requirements. The median PAR improvement for both companies is above 10 dB. The noise attenuation of the earplug vary with frequency, with lower attenuation at 4 000 Hz and higher attenuation at 8 000 Hz, showing some deviation from the nominal values. Conclusion: The difference between the actual sound attenuation value of earplugs and the nominal value is related to the noise frequency. When using silicone earplugs, attention should be paid to the spectral composition of the noise in the workplace.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune-inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease. PURPOSE: This study explores the main structural changes in patients with MS and their relationships with the activity and type of disease course. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included 159 patients (318 eyes) with an established diagnosis of MS: group (44 eyes; 13.84%) - relapsing-remitting type MS (RRMS) lasting up to 1 year without a history of optic neuritis (ON); group 2 (30 eyes; 9.43%) - RRMS up to 1 year with ON; group 3 (56 eyes; 17.61%) - RRMS lasting from 1 to 10 years without ON; group 4 (38 eyes; 11.95%) - RRMS from 1 to 10 years with ON; group 5 (49 eyes; 15.41%) - RRMS >10 years without ON; group 6 (37 eyes; 11.63%) - RRMS >10 years with ON; group 7 (34 eyes; 10.69%) - secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) without ON; group 8 (30 eyes; 9.43%) - SPMS with ON. Patients underwent standard ophthalmological examinations, including optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: A decrease in structural parameters was diagnosed, progressing with the duration of the disease and the presence of ON: the minimum values of mGCL+IPL (65.83±9.14 µm) and mSNFL (76.37±14.77 µm) were detected in the group with SPMS with ON. High inverse correlations of EDSS with mGCL+IPL and mRNFL were demonstrated, with maximum in the group with the longest duration of MS without ON (-0.48 and -0.52 (p=0.01), respectively). CONCLUSION: Changes in the thickness of the structural parameters of the retina, measured by OCT, can be considered as a predictor of the course of MS.

AIM: This exploratory study evaluates rating scale usage by experts from the European Reference Network for Rare Neurological Diseases (ERN-RND) for paediatric MD, considering factors like diagnosis, intellectual disability, age, and transition to adult care. The aim is to propose a preliminary framework for consistent application. METHODS: A multicentre survey among 25 ERN-RND experts from 10 European countries examined rating scale usage in paediatric MD, categorizing MD into acute, non-progressive, and neurodegenerative types. Factors influencing scale choice and the transition to adult care practices were analysed. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify the earliest age of application of these scales in paediatric patients. RESULTS: The study identifies various rating scales and establishes their usage frequencies for different MDs. Experts highlighted the need for standardized scales and proposed preliminary evaluation strategies based on clinical contexts. Challenges in applying scales to young, non-cooperative patients were acknowledged. INTERPRETATION: The study recommends developing standardized rating scales for paediatric MDs to improve evaluations and data collection. It suggests potential scales for specific clinical scenarios to better evaluate disease progression. Comprehensive, patient-centred care remains crucial during the transition to adult care, despite the identified challenges. This exploratory approach aims to enhance patient outcomes and care.

This study explores the influence of lexicality on gradient judgments of Swedish sibilant fricatives by contrasting ratings of initial fricatives in words and word fragments (initial CV-syllables). Visual-Analogue Scale (VAS) judgments were elicited from experienced listeners (speech-language pathologists; SLPs) and inexperienced listeners, and compared with respect to the effects of lexicality using Bayesian mixed-effects beta regression. Overall, SLPs had higher intra- and interrater reliability than inexperienced listeners. SLPs as a group also rated fricatives as more target-like, with higher precision, than did inexperienced listeners. An effect of lexicality was observed for all individual listeners, though the magnitude of the effect varied. Although SLP's ratings of Swedish children's initial voiceless fricatives were less influenced by lexicality, our results indicate that previous findings concerning VAS ratings of non-lexical CV-syllables cannot be directly transferred to the clinical context, without consideration of possible lexical bias.

AIM: To modify the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating to account for ultra-processing and compare the alignment of the modified ratings with NOVA classifications and the current Australian Dietary Guidelines classifications of core (recommended foods) and discretionary (foods to limit). METHODS: Data was cross-sectionally analysed for 25 486 products. Four approaches were compared to the original Health Star Rating: (1) five 'negative' points added to ultra-processed products (modification 1; inclusion approach); (2) ultra-processed products restricted to a maximum of 3.0 Health Stars (modification 2; capping approach); (3 and 4) same approach used for modifications 1 and 2 but only applied to products that already exceeded 10 'negative' points from existing Health Star Rating attributes (modifications 3 and 4, respectively; hybrid approaches). Alignment occurred when products (i) received <3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA group 4 (for NOVA comparison) or discretionary (for Dietary Guidelines comparison), or (ii) received ≥3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA groups 1-3 or core. RESULTS: All Health Star Rating modifications resulted in greater alignment with NOVA (ranging from 69% to 88%) compared to the original Health Star Rating (66%). None of the modifications resulted in greater alignment to the Dietary Guidelines classifications overall (69% to 76%, compared with 77% for the original Health Star Rating), but alignment varied considerably by food category. CONCLUSIONS: If ultra-processing were incorporated into the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating, consideration of ultra-processing within the broader dietary guidance framework would be essential to ensure coherent dietary messaging to Australians.

Objective: To explore the training and use of auditory perceptual evaluation of the voice reported by Colombian speech-language pathologists. Study Design: Cross-sectional observational research with a quantitative approach. Methods: A digital questionnaire was designed and distributed to gather information regarding professionals' training process and implementation of auditory-perceptual evaluation procedures. Descriptive statistics were applied, and several generalized linear models were adjusted to determine the influence of certain variables on others. Results: The survey received responses from 40 speech-language pathologists, revealing that the most used scales for training and evaluating vocal quality within this group are direct magnitude estimations (82.5% and 77.5%). Similarly, in this group, the tasks most frequently used to train and use as an evaluation strategy are vowel assessments (38%) followed by spontaneous speech (30%). Practitioners of this group were mostly trained using a conceptual framework involving multiple exposures to rating (42.5%). The use of direct magnitude estimation in training with a normal voice showed significance (p = 0.015), as did the use of the vowel /i/ in training with an equal-appearing interval (p = 0.013). The statistical models relating the scale used to the scale on which participants were trained were also significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The GRBAS scale is the training tool most used by the group of speech-language pathologists of the study group in Colombia. Future efforts should focus on improving training practices for auditory-perceptual evaluation, exploring alternative conceptual frameworks, and incorporating external references to enhance validity and reliability.


Objetivo: Explorar los reportes de fonoaudiólogos colombianos acerca del entrenamiento y uso de la evaluación perceptual auditiva de la voz. Diseño de estudio: Se eligió un diseño de investigación observacional transversal con un enfoque cuantitativo. Metodología: Se diseñó y distribuyó un cuestionario digital para recopilar información sobre el proceso de formación de los profesionales y la implementación de procedimientos de evaluación perceptual auditiva. Se aplicaron estadísticas descriptivas y se ajustaron varios modelos lineales generalizados para determinar la influencia de ciertas variables en otras. Resultados: La encuesta recibió respuestas de 40 fonoaudiólogos, revelando que las escalas más utilizadas para la formación y la evaluación de la calidad vocal en el grupo son las estimaciones de magnitud directa (82.5% y 77.5%). Del mismo modo, en este grupo las tareas más frecuentemente utilizadas para la formación y el uso como estrategia de evaluación son las vocales (38%), seguidas por el habla espontánea (30%). La mayoría de los profesionales del grupo fueron formados utilizando un marco conceptual que involucra múltiples exposiciones a la calificación (42.5%). El uso de la estimación de magnitud directa en la formación con una voz normal mostró significancia (p = 0.015), al igual que el uso de la vocal /i/ en la formación con intervalos de igual apariencia (p = 0.013). Los modelos estadísticos que relacionan la escala utilizada con la escala en la que los participantes fueron entrenados también fueron significativos (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: La escala GRBAS es la herramienta de formación más utilizada por el grupo de fonoaudiólogos del estudio. Los esfuerzos futuros deberían centrarse en mejorar las prácticas de formación para la evaluación perceptual auditiva, explorar marcos conceptuales alternativos e incorporar referencias externas para mejorar la validez y la confiabilidad.

Aim: The Brunnsviken Brief Quality of Life Scale (BBQ) is a popular quality of life measure, indexing satisfaction with and importance of six empirically selected life domains. Whether these domains hold cross-cultural validity remains largely unexplored. The current study developed and psychometrically validated a Japanese version of the BBQ (BBQ-J). Methods: Data were collected from 637 Japanese individuals aged between 20 and 87 years. We used t-tests, Pearson product-rate correlation coefficients, a reliability analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis, and an exploratory factor analysis to analyze the data, with 637 participants in all analyses. Results: There were no statistically significant gender differences on the BBQ-J. Confirmatory factor analysis of the BBQ-J revealed a 1-factor structure with six items. Convergent validity was confirmed by its association with life satisfaction, and negative convergent validity was confirmed by its negative correlation with depressive symptoms. Cronbach's alpha of the BBQ-J showed high internal consistency. Conclusion: Similar to the original version, the Japanese version of the BBQ is a valid and reliable self-administered measure of subjective quality of life for use in clinical and research settings.

BACKGROUND: Pain assessment and proper evaluation of pain is a prerequisite for treatment of acute and chronic pain. Until now, most evaluations use only resting pain intensity and a unidimensional scale, although multidimensional pain assessment and especially assessment of functional pain impact on activities is recommended. The "Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale" (DVPRS) permits this multidimensional assessment, but no validated French translation exists. OBJECTIVES: To validate the French translation of the multidimensional DVPRS, called Functional Pain Scale (FPS) in multiple settings of acute and chronic pain. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Two large hospitals in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. METHODS: We recruited 232 patients from February 2022 to January 2023. Patients with acute or chronic pain in different settings received a paper questionnaire with both the NRS and the Functional Pain Scale and a customized evaluation questionnaire. Correlation of FPS and NRS, psychometric properties and patient preferences were analysed. RESULTS: For the whole group of 232 patients, correlation of FPS and NRS was high, as well for all subgroups. The multi-item FPS scale showed excellent internal consistency. A large majority of patients, even those >75 years old, preferred FPS over NRS and stated that the FPS was easy to use. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirms that the French translation of the DVPRS (= Functional Pain Scale) is a valid measurement instrument for acute and chronic pain evaluation in a wide range of patient groups, and easy to use by patients.

We were interested in micro-variations in an athlete's psychophysical state that separate peak exertion from physiological collapse. Thus, we measured perceptual acuity in runners using a classic psychophysical approach, the just noticeable difference (JND) on two standard stimuli runs at treadmill speed corresponding to 70%VO2max and 80%VO2max. Thirty-four male runners (M age = 35.26, SD = 7.33 years) first performed a maximal treadmill test to determine the speed of a standard exercise bout for the JND trials. The JND trials consisted of four 5-minute running bouts on a treadmill with 5-minute rests between bouts. For bouts 1 and 3, participants ran at the standard stimuli pace, but for bouts 2 and 4, they adjusted their speeds to achieve a level of exertion at a JND above/below the SS. They achieved differences in the final 30 seconds of the VO2 between each JND bout and the previous standard stimuli at just above (JND-A) and just below (JND-B) the JND perceived exertions. We used a Generalized Linear Model analysis to compare the JND-A and JND-B within and between ventilatory threshold groups (lower/higher) in absolute and relative VO2 and in terms of the total JND magnitude. The magnitude of JND-A was greater than that of JND-B at 70%VO2max and 80%VO2max in absolute units (70%VO2 Δ = 2.62; SE = 0.37; p < .001; 80%VO2 Δ = 1.67; SE = 0.44; p = .002) and in relative units (70%VO2max Δ = 4.70; SE = 0.66; p < .001; 80%VO2max Δ = 2.96; SE = 0.80; p = .002). The total magnitude was greater in the 70%VO2max trial than 80%VO2max in absolute units (70%VO2 M = 3.78, SE = 0.31 mL·kg-1·min-1; 80%VO2 M = 2.62, SE = 0.37 mL·kg-1·min-1; p = .020) and in relative units (70%VO2max M = 6.57, SE = 0.53%VO2max; 80%VO2max M = 4.71, SE = 0.64%VO2max; p = .030). The JND range narrowed when physiologic demand increased, for both physical (speed) and psychological (RPE) variables.

A Geospatial Opportunity Mapping (GOMap) tool was created to identify policy unconstrained land in urban cities that is technically feasible for the deployment of solar photovoltaic power stations; and identify buildings with north- or south-facing orientation for the installation of building integrated PV (BIPV). Collaboration with a local Governing authority and a local electricity provider enabled the process to elicit comprehensive policy and technical aspect information respectively that would impact the site selection process. Five policy and four technical aspects are comprised of a total of 36 individual factors displayable by GOMap on a high-resolution city grid with a scoring system implemented to distinguish between factors that encourage or inhibits solar PV deployment. Weightings can be applied, and different scenarios explored including alternative policy changes and infrastructure upgrades. GOMap generates opportunity maps in the form of available land estimates which can be extrapolated by an in-built solar PV model to quantify annual energy generation based on local weather data, array spacing, panel type and array tilt angle. Three scenarios were devised to identify unconstrained land for solar PV deployment with varying levels of policy and technical factor relaxation, and a fourth scenario to identify dwellings for potential BIPV. These scenarios aim to tackle Glasgow City's growing energy demand and fuel poverty issue, the latter of which can supply energy to dwellings categorised as 'hard-to-heat' once heating is electrified due to the Scottish Government's Energy Strategy commitment.

In psychiatry clinical trials, an instrument or questionnaire with rating scale is often used to access safety and efficacy of a test treatment under investigation. Statistical analysis based on the collected rating scale is then performed a determine whether there is an improvement in endpoint change from baseline mean scale. This approach needs on absolute change, however, may not actually reflect the performance of the test treatment under study because the change, which may be considered of clinically importance, may fall within the same category in terms of disease severity such as mild, moderate, and severe. In this case, it is suggested, in addition to absolute change approach, a categorical shift analysis be considered to determine whether the endpoint change from baseline has resulted in an improvement in categorical shift, in terms of disease severity shift e.g., from severe to mild or moderate. In this article, we explore the relationship between absolute change approach and categorical shift analysis based on rating scales for assessment of test treatment under study.
