RESUMO

While the career transition of athletes has been explored to several extents, it is often marked by complex psychosocial challenges and requires a redefined sense of identity and professional purpose. Research to date has predominately focused on the disadvantages or inequity emerging from broad social demographics without delving into specific career transition pathways, such as into higher education settings. This study specifically investigates the unique psychosocial factors underlying the career transition of retired Chinese athletes into higher education. We conducted an interview phase with retired Chinese athletes (Phase 1, n = 17) and a Delphi phase with senior human resources (HR) managers from Chinese higher education settings (Phase 2, n = 15). This approach allowed us to understand the lived experiences and challenges of these athletes within the Chinese cultural and social context, as well as HR experts' perceptions of their career transitions, respectively. The results unveil crucial psychosocial factors that motivate, and the barriers that challenge, and difficulties retired Chinese athletes in their transition, informing intervention and policy efforts to facilitate their successful integration into higher education.

RESUMO

Retraining retired racehorses for various purposes can help correct behavioral issues. However, ensuring efficiency and preventing accidents present global challenges. Based on the hypothesis that a simple personality assessment could help address these challenges, the present study aimed to identify genetic markers associated with personality. Eight genes were selected from 18 personality-related candidate genes that are orthologs of human personality genes, and their association with personality was verified based on actual behavior. A total of 169 Thoroughbred horses were assessed for their tractability (questionnaire concerning tractability in 14 types of situations and 3 types of impressions) during the training process. Personality factors were extracted from the data using principal component analysis and analyzed for their association with single nucleotide variants as non-synonymous substitutions in the target genes. Three genes, CDH13, SLC6A4, and MAOA, demonstrated significant associations based on simple linear regression, marking the identification of these genes for the first time as contributors to temperament in Thoroughbred horses. All these genes, as well as the previously identified HTR1A, are involved in the serotonin neurotransmitter system, suggesting that the tractability of horses may be correlated with their social personality. Assessing the genotypes of these genes before retraining is expected to prevent problems in the development of a racehorse's second career and shorten the training period through individual customization of training methods, thereby improving racehorse welfare.

RESUMO

Introduction: The wellbeing of retired teachers is often easily overlooked. This study aims to explore the mental health status and influencing factors of retired teachers. Method: From October to December 2022, a convenient sampling survey was conducted on retired teachers using the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), mainly using the χ2-test and logistic regression analysis. Results: A sampling survey was conducted on 353 retired teachers, with an overall positive detection rate of 16.1%. The five factors with the highest positive detection rate were found to be obsessive-compulsive disorder (30.3%), interpersonal sensitivity (21.5%), paranoia (20.1%), anxiety (19.3%), and others (19.3%). The detection rates for the five factors, namely psychosis, depression, hostility, terror, and somatization, are all below 19%. The data on sex (χ2 = 4.626, P = 0.043), professional title (χ2 = 17.670, P = 0.003), income (χ2 = 9.960, P = 0.041), life satisfaction (χ2 = 27.348, P = 0.000), family relationships (χ2 = 51.451, P = 0.000), and physical health status (χ2 = 50.361, P = 0.000) show that the difference in mental health among retired teachers is statistically significant. The multivariate binary logistic regression analysis revealed that family relationships, life satisfaction, and physical health were important factors leading to mental health problems among retired teachers. Discussion: Retired teachers should cultivate a wide range of interests and hobbies, engage in regular physical exercise, develop healthy living habits, foster a positive family atmosphere, establish harmonious family relationships, promote community cultural construction, strengthen psychological intervention, and prevent psychological diseases.

RESUMO

The flourishing expansion of the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) market has led to a surge in the demand for lithium resources. Developing efficient recycling technologies for imminent large-scale retired LIBs can significantly facilitate the sustainable utilization of lithium resources. Here, we successfully extract active lithium from spent LIBs through a simple, efficient, and low-energy-consumption chemical leaching process at room temperature, using a solution comprised of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and ether solvents. The mechanism of lithium extraction is elucidated by clarifying the relationship between the redox potential and extraction efficiency. More importantly, the reclaimed active lithium is directly employed to fabricate LiFePO4 cathode with performance comparable to commercial materials. When implemented in 56 Ah prismatic cells, the cells deliver stable cycling properties with a capacity retention of ∼90% after 1200 cycles. Compared with the other strategies, this technical approach shows superior economic benefits and practical promise. It is anticipated that this method may redefine the recycling paradigm for retired LIBs and drive the sustainable development of industries.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Despite robust research endeavors exploring post-play health implications in former NFL players, the impact of former-player status on long-term cardiovascular health has not yet been elucidated. The purpose of this systematic review is to describe the available research on the cardiovascular health in former NFL players. METHODS: Relevant studies were included from the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases. Studies were evaluated in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Two independent reviewers conducted the title/abstract screenings and risk of bias determinations. The results of the studies were extracted for inclusion in the review. RESULTS: Sixteen studies met inclusion criteria. Though evidence was discordant among studies, former NFL players appeared to possess more favorable metabolic profiles and decreased mortality compared to community controls. Of note, 90% of former players were found to be overweight or obese. CONCLUSION: Though cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among former NFL players, they possess comparable metabolic and cardiovascular profiles to community controls. Further research is necessary to ascertain the impact of NFL play on cardiovascular health and develop tailored preventative care strategies for former players.

RESUMO

The proliferation of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) over the past decade has led to a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by these batteries reaching the end of their lifespan. With retired EVs becoming more prevalent, recycling and reusing their components, particularly graphite, has become imperative as the world transitions toward electric mobility. Graphite constitutes ≈20% of LIBs by weight, making it a valuable resource to be conserved. This review presents an in-depth analysis of the current global graphite mining landscape and explores potential opportunities for the "second life" of graphitefrom depleted LIBs. Various recycling and reactivation technologies in both industry and academia are discussed, along with potential applications for recycled graphite forming a vital aspect of the waste management hierarchy. Furthermore, this review addresses the future challenges faced by the recycling industry in dealing with expired LIBs, encompassing environmental, economic, legal, and regulatory considerations. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in recycling and reusing graphite from retired LIBs, offering valuable insights for forthcoming large-scale recycling efforts.

RESUMO

This exploratory study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of multiple concussions on prefrontal cortex oxygenation during a five-minute hypercapnic challenge using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). 55 physically active retired contact sport male athletes with three or more previous concussions (mTBI) were recruited along with 29 physically active males with no concussions history (CTRL). Participants completed five minutes of seated rest prior to the five-minute hypercapnic challenge (20-second breath-hold, 40-second recovery breathing; five times). NIRS measured right and left side oxygenated (O2Hb), deoxygenated (HHb), total (tHb) haemoglobin, and haemoglobin difference (HbDiff) with all parameters analysed through changes in average maximal and minimal values (ΔMAX), Z-scores, and standard deviations. Right prefrontal cortex HbDiff ΔMAX was significantly higher in the mTBI compared to CTRL (p = 0.045) group. Left prefrontal cortex O2Hb ΔMAX (p = 0.040), HHb Z-Scores (p = 0.008), and HbDiff ΔMAX(p = 0.014) were significantly higher in the mTBI group. Within-group right vs left analyses demonstrated significantly lower left HbDiff ΔMAX (p = 0.048) and HbDiff Z-scores (p = 0.002) in the mTBI group, while the CTRL group had significantly lower left HHb Z-scores (p = 0.003) and left tHb Z-scores (p = 0.042). This study provides preliminary evidence that athletes with a history of three or more concussions may have impaired prefrontal cortex oxygenation parameters during a hypercapnic challenge.

RESUMO

The goal of this work is to evaluate generation and metals recycling potentials of retired mobile phones in Korea. The generation estimation is conducted with the sales&new method and statistic data, such as sales of mobile phones and amount of the subscribers. The result shows that there are 17.99 million of mobile phones retired in 2022, compared 13.12 million in 2001. Accordingly, the deduced lifetime has minimum and maximum values in 2003 and 2020, which are 2.02 and 4.33 years, compared with 4.16 years in 2022 and 2.21 years in 2001. The deduced lifetime trends to increase with the increased values of subscribers and the fluctuated values of sales. The crosscheck testifies to the veracity of the result in comparison with the actual condition. The amount and dynamic of critical metals are also calculated with the content and amount of retired mobile phones.

RESUMO

International concern continues regarding the association between the long-term neurophysiologic changes from repetitive neurotrauma associated with contact and collision sports. This study describes corticomotor changes in retired contact/collision sport athletes and controls, between the ages of 30 and 70 years. Retired athletes (n = 152; 49.1 ± 8.5 years) and controls (n = 72; 47.8 ± 9.5 years) were assessed using single and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for active motor threshold (aMT), motor evoked potential and cortical silent period duration (expressed as MEP:cSP ratio), and short- and long-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI and LICI). Motor threshold, MEP:cSP, SICI and LICI for both groups were correlated across age. Controls showed significant moderate correlations for MEP:cSP ratios at 130% (rho = 0.48, p < 0.001), 150% (rho = 0.49, p < 0.001) and 170% aMT (rho = 0.42; p < 0.001) and significant small negative correlation for SICI (rho = -0.27; p = 0.030), and moderate negative correlation for LICI (rho = -0.43; p < 0.001). Group-wise correlation analysis comparisons showed significant correlation differences between groups for 130% (p = 0.016) and 150% aMT (p = 0.009), specifically showing retired athletes were displaying increased corticomotor inhibition. While previous studies have focussed studies on older athletes (>50 years), this study is the first to characterize corticomotor differences between retired athletes and controls across the lifespan. These results, demonstrating pathophysiological differences in retired athletes across the lifespan, provide a foundation to utilise evoked potentials as a prodromal marker in supplementing neurological assessment for traumatic encephalopathy syndrome associated with contact/collision sport athletes that is currently lacking physiological biomarkers.

RESUMO

Military organizations often demonstrate contrasting features compared to civilian ones, including indoctrination of military identity and mind-set. Therefore, on returning after retirement, military personnel undergo acculturation to reconnect to the civilian world. Many military retirees face difficulty readjusting in multiple professional and personal life domains, and report decreased life satisfaction due to this transition. The present review conducted a thematic meta-synthesis of 28 studies that had qualitatively assessed military to civilian transition experiences. The aim was to understand the military-civilian culture gap and identify the challenges faced during this transition. The analysis led to six themes - "Military Institutionalization, Military-Civilian Cultural Contrast, The Three S's of Transition Challenges - Stereotypes, Skills, and Support, The Losses of Identity, Reconnecting with Family, Friends, and Civilian Counterparts, and Facilitators in Transition - Covering the Military-Civilian Gap." Based on these findings, the review further presents possible intervention suggestions for retirement adjustment and future research direction.

RESUMO

The use of Metagenomics Next-Generation Sequencing (mNGS) as a diagnostic tool for respiratory infections, particularly in the context of retired fitness players, presents a novel avenue for optimizing healthcare and wellness in this unique population. Respiratory illnesses, including influenza, can have profound effects on the health and performance of retired athletes, making accurate and timely diagnosis paramount. In this study, we aimed to assess the applicability of mNGS in diagnosing influenza virus infections in retired fitness players. We collected and analyzed respiratory samples from this specific cohort, leveraging mNGS technology. Our research focused on evaluating mNGS's potential as a diagnostic tool compared to conventional methods. Our findings underscored the remarkable capabilities of mNGS. When compared to traditional diagnostic techniques, mNGS demonstrated superior sensitivity in detecting influenza virus-positive respiratory samples in retired fitness players. Additionally, mNGS facilitated the identification of not only known influenza strains but also previously undetected viral variants, offering a comprehensive view of the viral landscape. The utilization of mNGS as a diagnostic tool in the care of retired fitness players holds great promise in enhancing their health monitoring and overall well-being. This technology can aid in the early detection and precise characterization of respiratory infections, contributing to the timely implementation of targeted interventions and improving the quality of healthcare for this unique and health-conscious population. RESUMO

This article addresses the objective, experimental design and methodology of the tests conducted for battery State of Health (SOH) estimation using an accelerated test method. For this purpose, 25 unused cylindrical cells were aged, by continual electrical cycling using a 0.5C charge and 1C discharge to 5 different SOH breakpoints (80, 85, 90, 95 and 100%). Ageing of the cells to the different SOH values was undertaken at a temperature of 25 °C. A reference performance test (RPT) of C/3 charge-discharge at 25 °C was performed when the cells were new and at each stage of cycling to define the energy capacity reduction due to increased charge-throughput. An electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test was performed at 5, 20, 50, 70 and 95% states of charge (SOC) for each cell at temperatures of 15, 25 and 35 °C. The shared data includes the raw data files for the reference test and the measured energy capacity and the measured SOH for each cell. It contains the 360 EIS data files and a file which tabulates the key features of the EIS plot for each test case. The reported data has been used to train a machine-learning model for the rapid estimation of battery SOH discussed in the manuscript co-submitted (MF Niri et al., 2022). The reported data can be used for the creation and validation of battery performance and ageing models to underpin different application studies and the design of control algorithms to be employed in battery management systems (BMS).

RESUMO

Global environmental concerns and resource scarcity are driving the growth in sales of electric vehicles (EVs). Reusing and recycling retired batteries from EVs has significant economic value and reduces the environmental burden. Rising raw material prices have intensified competition among recyclers; in particular, recyclers without corporate social responsibility (CSR) have been added. These observations lead to a game-theoretical model consisting of three players: a battery manufacturer, a recycler with CSR and a recycler without CSR (non-CSR). The non-CSR recycler enjoys a cost advantage over the CSR recycler, but may not be considered by the consumers with high environmental awareness (CEA). We explore the incentive strategies for CSR recyclers outperform, and how the equilibrium is affected by the recyclers' Stackelberg game. Results show that (1) the deposit- refund is the most profitable strategy for all members and the whole supply chain if raw material price rises high enough; otherwise, a contract strategy should be adopted. (2) Improving CEA and echelon utilization ratio is more conducive to the implementation of revenue-sharing contract. In addition, increasing CEA contributed to CSR recycler collects more retired batteries instead of non-CSR recycler. (3) Stackelberg game between recyclers may hurt supply chain. However, CSR recycler may benefit from the non-CSR recycler-led Stackelberg game. Our work provides the basis of incentive strategies for different participants in the closed-loop supply chain of retired batteries, in particular, to encourage retired batteries flow to CSR recyclers.

RESUMO

One of the impending consequences of the rapid penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) is that a substantial amount of expired EV batteries will present an increasing waste collection and management problem, particularly in the urban context. Motivated by a lack of research on this issue, this paper comprehensively evaluates the relative benefits of shared versus non-shared collection systems, where the service outlets are not exclusive to specified automakers. Using a mixed-integer optimization model, the analysis features spatiotemporal and multiple stakeholder complexities. Based on the historical monthly EV sales data from 2016 to 2021, a representative case study of Beijing, China is conducted, including 16 district centers, 32 major automobile manufacturers, 153 collection service outlets and 4 disposal centers. The results show that a shared collection service system leads to higher profitability, higher collection rates, increased environmental benefits and improved facility utilization. Consequently, this research contributes to supply chain liberalization to foster the efficient waste management of EV batteries. With a further model extension, it can also provide decision support for the policy-making of more countries.

RESUMO

AIMS: This paper aimed to explore the views of employers at senior care businesses concerning the employment of retired nurses in Thailand. DESIGN: A qualitative interview study was conducted. METHODS: Face-to-face and online semi-structured interviews with 78 senior care business employers were conducted. RESULTS: Business employers had positive sentiments towards employing retired nurses to deliver care and supported them to remain in the profession. Business employers acknowledged that retired nurses have a high level of professional confidence with excellent knowledge and skills. Furthermore, retired nurses were often assigned to work in managerial roles. In addition, flexibility in terms of work hours, suitability of role and responsibilities, and reasonable compensation rates were important to nurses' decisions to remain in or return to the nursing profession. There is a need for the further development of recruitment, retention and reform policies to encourage retired nurses to continue or return to the nursing profession. PATIENT AND PUBLIC CONTRIBUTIONS: We thank all participants for their valuable input throughout the study.

RESUMO

As electric vehicles (EVs) are developing at a rapid pace, the foreseeable "scrap tide" of EV batteries poses a severe challenge to ecological protection. This article investigates a dual-recycle channel closed-loop supply chain and provides regulatory solutions to retired EV batteries' recycling. Specifically, we construct four supervision scenarios: S1 no policy intervention, S2 reward-penalty scheme, S3 deposit-refund scheme, and S4 dual scheme combining S2 and S3. Based on the Stackelberg game and empirical data, all scenarios' recycling performance is evaluated and compared with a view to "society, economy, and environment". The results revealed: (1) Compared with S1, the recycling rate and carbon reduction rate in S2∼S4 increase by 2.6049%/0.0092%, 4.0379%/0.0285%, and 6.6660%/0.0379%, respectively; (2) The difference between S2 and S3 in recycling performance depends on regulatory intensities, yet the latter places greater burdens on consumers and firms. The S4 presents optimal environmental performance but at the expense of socioeconomic development; (3) As regulatory intensity increases, social welfare rises driven by environmental benefits, then falls due to overburdened supply chain profits, consumer surplus, and policy expenditures; (4) Carbon trading prices and EVs' potential market sizes affect regulatory schemes' operations. Our results contribute to policy-making and managerial practices for EV battery recycling.

RESUMO

The recycling of retired new energy vehicle power batteries produces economic benefits and promotes the sustainable development of environment and society. However, few attentions have been paid to the design and optimization of sustainable reverse logistics network for the recycling of retired power batteries. To this end, we develop a six-level sustainable dynamic reverse logistics network model from the perspectives of economy, environment, and society. We solve the multi-objective combinatorial optimization model to explore the layout of the sustainable reverse logistics network for retired new energy vehicle power batteries recycling. A case study is implemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results show that (a) the facility nodes near the front of the network fluctuate more by opening and closing; (b) the dynamic reverse logistics network is superior to its static counterpart; and (c) cooperation cost changes affect the transaction volume between third-party and cooperative enterprises and total network cost.

RESUMO

Structural changes in the retinal vasculature have been linked to increased cardiovascular risks and also change as a function of age. Because multiparity has been associated with poorer cardiovascular health scores, we hypothesized that changes in retinal vascular caliber would be observed in multiparous, compared to nulliparous, females and retired breeder males. Age-matched nulliparous (n = 6) and multiparous (n = 11, retired breeder females with 4 ± 1 litters), and male breeder (n = 7) SMA-GFP reporter mice were included for assessment of retinal vascular structure. Multiparous females had higher body mass, heart weight, and kidney weight compared to nulliparous mice, with lower kidney and higher brain weight compared to male breeders. There was no difference in number of retinal arterioles or venules, or arteriole or venule diameter among groups; however, venous pericyte density (number per venule area) decreased in multiparous vs. nulliparous mice and was negatively associated with the time since last litter and with age. Our results suggest that the time elapsed since delivery is an important factor to be considered in multiparity studies. Taken together, changes in vascular structure and potentially function, are time- and age-dependent. Ongoing and future work will determine whether structural changes are associated with functional consequences at the blood-retinal barrier.

RESUMO

The association between retirement and functioning remains still poorly known. This scoping review examines physical, social, cognitive, and mental functioning after retirement, describes the changes in them, determines the different aspects that affect functioning, and documents the main characteristics of the phenomenon. We systematically scoped the relevant studies on functioning after retirement using CINAHL, MEDLINE, Medic, and PubMed databases. This scoping review included both qualitative and quantitative studies. The studies were analysed with inductive content analysis. After retirement, functioning was found to decline but also improve, and additionally, inequalities in functioning emerged. Functioning after retirement changed in ways which were: declining functioning, improving functioning, and inequalities in functioning. Only a few qualitative studies were found. This scoping review shows that functioning after retirement changes in varying ways. The results show that more qualitative research is needed to help us gain a more profound understanding on, for example, individuals' motives to improve leisure, physical, and social activities after retirement, which are likely to contribute to changes in functioning. Additionally, further longitudinal studies would offer knowledge about the long-term effects of retirement on the different dimensions of functioning.
