RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The goal of registering the condylar guidance is to recreate the patient's occlusion as exactly as possible on the articulator, and is therefore essential for successful prosthodontic rehabilitation. Clinical, radiographic, and pantographic methods are used to determine sagittal condylar guidance angles (SCGAs). These methods generate different angles in the same patients. The present study is the first disquisition to evaluate and correlate SCGAs determined by the use of pantographic tracing (PT), protrusive records (PR), and radiographic (CBCT) techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The condylar guidance was measured using PT, PR, and CBCT imaging techniques in 23 nonpatient participants aged between 18 and 30 years irrespective of sex. PT was recorded using Cadiax® Compact system, a computerized recorder of SCGAs. PR was obtained using polyvinyl siloxane bite registration material, transferred to a semiadjustable articulator (Denar Mark II, Whip Mix Corp., USA) using facebow transfer (Denar Mark II, Whip Mix Corp., USA) and CR records, to determine SCGAs. Images of the mid-facial region were obtained using CBCT scan for 3D reconstruction. The angle formed between Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP) and a line extending from the most supero-anterior point on the glenoid fossa to the most convex point on the apex of articular eminence (AE) was measured to obtain SCGAs. RESULTS: The mean left and right SCGAs were as follows: PT (34.42° and 33.93°, respectively), PR (32.14° and 31.82°), and CBCT (38.96° and 38.12°). The Pearson coefficients for the correlations with PT and PR on the left and right sides were 0.899 and 0.907, respectively, while it was 0.911 and 0.934, and 0.842 and 0.874 from PT and CBCT, and PR and CBCT, respectively. CONCLUSION: Strong correlations were found between SCGAs obtained using PT, PR, and CBCT techniques.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare and correlate sagittal condylar guidance determined by intraoral gothic arch tracing method and panoramic radiograph in edentulous patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve completely edentulous patients were selected by the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conventional steps in the fabrication of complete denture till jaw relation were carried out. Intraoral gothic arch tracing and protrusive interocclusal records were obtained for each patient. Protrusive interocclusal record was used to program the Hanau Wide-Vue semi-adjustable articulator, thus obtaining the sagittal condylar guidance angle. Using RadiAnt DICOM software, on the orthopantomogram obtained for each patient in the study, two reference lines were drawn. The Frankfort's horizontal plane and the mean curvature line (joining the most superior and the inferior points on the glenoid fossa curvature) were drawn. The mean curvature line was extended to intersect the Frankfort's horizontal plane, thus obtaining the radiographic sagittal condylar guidance angle. The condylar guidance angles obtained by these two methods were compared and subjected to paired t-test. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between the sagittal condylar guidance angles obtained between right and left sides with intraoral gothic arch tracing and radiographic methods (P = 0.107 and 0.07, respectively). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that the protrusive condylar guidance angles obtained by panoramic radiograph may be used for programming semi-adjustable articulators.

AIM: To compare the intraoral gothic tracing method with panoramic radiographs in patients requiring complete dentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted on 20 edentulous subjects of both genders. Hanau Wide-Vue semi-adjustable articulator was used to record sagittal condylar guidance in all patients. Panoramic radiographs were taken in all patients and Frankfurt horizontal plane was traced on both sides of orthopantomogram (OPG) and second plane was marked by joining the most superior and most inferior point on the glenoid fossa curvature. Frankfort's horizontal plane was crossed with this line to record radiographic condylar guidance angle. NNT software was used to record the condylar guidance angle. RESULTS: Mean ± standard deviation (SD) clinical SCG (25.15 ± 3.24) and radiographic seismocardiography (SCG) (27.54± 5.01) was non significant (p > 0.05) on left side. Mean ± standard deviation (SD) clinical SCG (26.84 ± 3.69) and radiographic SCG (29.3 5 ± 4.58) was significant (p < 0.05) on right side. The SCG did not show difference in values recorded by both methods on both sides. The difference in values in both sides by clinical method and radiographic method was non-significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was correlation between sagittal condylar guidance obtained by both intraoral gothic arch method as well as radiographic method done on digital panoramic radiographs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Correct centric jaw relation determines the success of the complete denture. Radiographic and clinical methods provide sufficient minute details necessary for the betterment of management.

AIM: To evaluate and compare the correlation between sagittal condylar guidance obtained by protrusive interocclusal records mounted on semi-adjustable articulator with panoramic and Lateral cephalogram radiograph tracings in dentulous population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred twenty dentulous subjects between age group of 20-40 years, free of signs and symptoms of any temporomandibular diseases were selected. The sagittal condylar guidance was determined by protrusive interocclusal records and transferred to a semi-adjustable articulator through a face bow. The condylar guidance angles obtained were tabulated. The sagittal outline of the articular eminence and glenoid fossa were traced on panoramic and lateral cephalogram radiographs. The sagittal condylar path inclination was constructed. This was related to the Frankfurt's horizontal plane on radiograph to determine the radiographic angle of sagittal condylar guidance. The comparison of protrusive interocclusal records was done with the angles obtained by panoramic and lateral cephalogram radiograph tracings. RESULTS: The mean difference between the condylar guidance values obtained using panoramic and lateral cephalogram radiographs was 0.13° and 0.67° on right side and 1.0° and 1.54° on left side with the radiographic values being higher. A Significant positive correlation was observed with P values 0.001 and 0.005 in left and right respectively. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted on the correlation between protrusive interocclusal records and the lateral cephalogram radiograph tracings which were more positively related than the panoramic radiograph. The values of lateral cephalogram radiograph tracings are closer as separate radiographs for left and right side were taken, causing the amount and quality of image distortion less. Lateral cephalogram radiograph may be taken as an important tool to rely on for recording the Sagittal condylar guidance angle.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between sagittal condylar guidance obtained by protrusive interocclusal records and panoramic radiograph tracing methods in human dentulous subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sagittal condylar guidance was determined in 75 dentulous subjects by protrusive interocclusal records using Aluwax through a face bow transfer (HANAU™ Spring Bow, Whip Mix Corporation, USA) to a semi-adjustable articulator (HANAU™ Wide-Vue Articulator, Whip Mix Corporation, USA). In the same subjects, the sagittal outline of the articular eminence and glenoid fossa was traced in panoramic radiographs. The sagittal condylar path inclination was constructed by joining the heights of curvature in the glenoid fossa and the corresponding articular eminence. This was then related to the constructed Frankfurt's horizontal plane to determine the radiographic angle of sagittal condylar guidance. RESULTS: A strong positive correlation existed between right and left condylar guidance by the protrusive interocclusal method (P 0.000) and similarly by the radiographic method (P 0.013). The mean difference between the condylar guidance obtained using both methods were 1.97° for the right side and 3.18° for the left side. This difference between the values by the two methods was found to be highly significant for the right (P 0.003) and left side (P 0.000), respectively. The sagittal condylar guidance obtained from both methods showed a significant positive correlation on right (P 0.000) and left side (P 0.015), respectively. CONCLUSION: Panoramic radiographic tracings of the sagittal condylar path guidance may be made relative to the Frankfurt's horizontal reference plane and the resulting condylar guidance angles used to set the condylar guide settings of semi-adjustable articulators.

RESUMO

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In the Protar articulator, the models are almost parallel with the Camper's plane. The ultrasonic-based ARCUSdigma system is basis for the determination of dynamic function parameters with so-called "articulator related registration". PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the sagittal condylar guidance angles found by use of the wax protrusive records in a semi-adjustable articulator(KaVo Protar 7) with those found by use of the Axiograph(ARCUSdigma). 83 volunteers with intact dentition participated in this study after obtainment of informed consent. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The sagittal condylar guidance angles were measured and estimated statistically by semi-articulator and Axiograph. All the readings were in degrees. No control was used in this project. To test whether there was a significant difference between the 2 independent samples, paired t-test and Kruskal-Wallis test were carried out(p=.05). RESULTS: 1. The mean results for the wax protrusive records were as follow: right side (32.65 degrees, SD 16.48); left side (33.27 degrees, SD 17.49). 2. The mean results for the Axiograph were as follow: right side (32.26 degrees, SD 7.00); left side (33.07 degrees, SD 7.58). 3. There was no statistical difference on the wax protrusive records and Axiograph(p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Both methods of wax protrusive records and Axiograph are clinically acceptable for measuring the sagittal condylar guidance angles in semi-adjustable articulators.
