Resumen La endometritis es la inflamación del revestimiento interno del útero producida por distintos agentes infecciosos. Puede presentarse de forma clínica o subclínica, y tener curso agudo o crónico. Este documento describe el caso de una hembra de tití gris (Saguinus leucopus) en proceso de rehabilitación en la Unidad de Rescate y Rehabilitación de Animales Silvestres (URRAS), que manifestó enfermedad uterina, y cuyos hallazgos fueron compatibles con endometritis supurativa. No se conocen otros reportes de la patología en calitrícidos. Por tal motivo, se propone adelantar investigaciones que determinen los factores de riesgo en la presentación de estas enfermedades reproductivas, y para estandarizar pruebas paraclínicas que mejoren su diagnóstico en pequeños primates, teniendo en cuenta la escasa información disponible para la especie afectada y las repercusiones en su conservación.
Abstract Endometritis is inflammation of the intern uterus lining caused by different infectious microorganisms, and it can be clinical or subclinical and have an acute or chronic path. This paper describes the case of a female white-footed tamarin (Saguinus leucopus) in rehabilitation from the Unidad de Rescate y Rehabilitacion de Animales Silvestres (URRAS), that presented a uterus disease and the pathological findings were compatible with suppurative endometritis. There are no reports of endometritis in Callitrichidae, suggesting that more studies need to be done to determine the risk factors in the presentation of these reproductive diseases and to standardize paraclinical tests that improve their diagnosis in small primates, taking into account the limited information available for the affected species and the implications for its conservation.
RESUMO
The use of GPS telemetry has been a reliable research tool for the study of primate biology in recent years. Although in the past technological restrictions limited its use mainly to large primates, recent improvements in battery size make it possible to use this technology for small species. We used GPS devices for monitoring two adult white-footed tamarins (Saguinus leucopus) from a free-ranging group, and assessed its applicability for recording spatial and ecological data. GPS devices were operational for 66 and 85 days, recording 221 positions (36.6% acquisition rate; 73% of which were highly accurate) and 3195 activity values for both individuals. Depending on the estimation method, we calculated the home range size for the group to be 19.4 and 22.9 ha, which were within the range for the species in other localities. The animals were active each day for 11 h, with high activity during the early morning. The monkeys showed a constant and alternate use of four sleeping sites with a limited reuse of the same site on consecutive nights. These daily activity and sleeping site use patterns are similar to those reported for other Saguinus species. Based on the kind and quality of the data recorded, we consider GPS telemetry to be an efficient and advantageous method for tracking and obtaining ecological information from S. leucopus. In comparison to other data collection methods, GPS telemetry required fewer personnel and less time commitment to record data without compromising the accuracy of the spatial and activity information we obtained.

Resumen El estudio de individuos en cautiverio de primates Neotropicales ha permitido conocer aspectos básicos de su historia natural. Sin embargo las condiciones medioambientales pueden determinar diferencias ecológicas y fisiológicas en poblaciones silvestres. En el caso del tití gris (Saguinus leucopus), primate endémico del noroccidente colombiano, diferentes parámetros fisiológicos han sido evaluados en cautiverio. Con el fin de diagnosticar el estado de salud en condiciones naturales, se evaluaron varias características externas y parámetros fisiológicos, así como la comunidad de parásitos de dos poblaciones naturales. Aunque en general no se detectaron signos de deterioro en las condiciones generales de salud, se identificaron once taxones de parásitos entre helmintos y protozoos, algunos con alta prevalencia (filarias y Trypanosoma spp). Las comunidades de parásitos en cautiverio y en estado silvestre muestran diferencias notables. Igualmente, se identificó una aparente variación entre poblaciones silvestres e incluso entre grupos sociales circundantes con respecto a los perfiles hematológicos y de química sanguínea, que sugiere diferencias en la respuesta fisiológica ante condiciones medioambientales. Ninguna de dichas variables fisiológicas pareció estar relacionada con los parásitos encontrados. Los resultados revelaron una amplia diversidad de parásitos y una elevada tasa de infecciones parasitarias en poblaciones naturales de S. leucopus, que parecen no estar asociadas con indicadores de la condición de salud. Futuros estudios deberán enfatizar en aspectos ecológicos, genéticos y demográficos que determinen las condiciones de salud de S. leucopus en su medio natural. Abstract While much of the natural history of Neotropical primates has been revealed through studies conducted in captive individuals, environmental factors may impose ecological and physiological differences in free-range populations. For the white-footed tamarin (Saguinus leucopus), a primate endemic to Northwest Colombia, physiological parameters that have been assessed in captivity still remain to be measured in free-range populations. In order to diagnose the health status of this species in a natural environment, we assessed several external traits, measured hematological and blood-chemistry values, and characterized the parasite community of two natural populations. Despite the identification of eleven different parasite taxa and wide distribution of filaria and Trypanosoma spp., we faieled to detect signs of poor health condition. Substantial differences were found between captive and free-range tamarin populations in the composition of their parasite communities. Likewise, hematological and blood-chemistry profiles differed between free-range populations and even between neighboring social groups, suggesting a role of environmental factors in the physiological response. However, none of the physiological parameters varied as a response to parasite infection. Our results revealed a high diversity of parasites and elevated rates of parasitic infections in natural populations of S. leucopus, that do not seem to be associated with indicators of health conditions. Future studies should emphasize on ecological, genetic and demographic factors that determine the health conditions of S. leucopus in the wild. Lastly, geographic variation of physiological profiles and parasite distribution, as well as epidemiological differences between captive and wild populations, should be incorporated in rehabilitation plans of captive tamarins in order to restrict the transmission of infectious agents between populations.
Resumo O estudo de indivíduos em cativeiro de primatas Neotropicais tem permitido conhecer aspectos básicos da história natural. Embora as condições ambientais podem determinar diferenças ecológicas e fisiológicas em populações silvestres. No caso do sagui cinza (Saguinus leucopus), primata endémico do noroeste colombiano, diferentes parâmetros fisiológicos tem sido avaliados em cativeiro. Com o intuito de diagnosticar o estado de saúde em condições naturais, avaliaram-se vários rasgos externos e parâmetros fisiológicos, assim como a comunidade de parasitas de duas populações naturais. Ainda que em geral não se detectassem signos de deterioro nas condições gerais de saúde, identificaram-se onze táxones de parasitas entre helmintos e protozoários, alguns com alta prevalência (filarias e Trypanosoma spp). As comunidades de parasitas em cativeiro e no estado silvestre mostram diferenças notáveis. Igualmente, identificou-se uma aparente variação entre populações silvestres e entre grupos sociais circundantes com respeito aos perfis hematológicos e de química sanguínea, que sugere diferenças na resposta fisiológica diante condições ambientais do médio. Nenhuma das mencionadas variáveis fisiológicas pareceu estar relacionada com as parasitas encontradas. Os resultados revelaram uma grande diversidade de parasitas e uma alta taxa de infecção parasitária em populações naturais de S. leucopus, que não parecem estar associados com indicadores do condição de saúde. Estudos deste tipo no futuro deveram enfatizar em aspectos ecológicos, genéticos e demográficos que determinem as condições de saúde de S. leucopus em seu médio natural. Recomenda-se que a reabilitação de indivíduos em cativeiro tenha presente possíveis diferenças em variáveis fisiológicas e epidemiológicas entre populações naturais e grupos em cativeiro com o fim de restringir a transmissão de agentes infeciosos entre populações.
RESUMO
Genetic methods for the reintroduction of primates Saguinus, Aotus and Cebus (Primates: Cebidae) seized in Bogota, Colombia. Primates are one of more confiscated taxa by the environmental authorities in Bogota, Colombia. During 2008, 133 monkeys were confiscated; samples from 115 of them were sequenced by the mitochondrial cythocrome oxidase II gene (mtCOII) and 112 sequences obtained were of high quality. These sequences were compared with those obtained by our research group from individuals directly sampled in the field, with precise geographic origin. So, a more specific geographic area of the Colombian territory could be considered for a correct rehabilitation treatment during the reintroduction of these confiscated animals. The main results with five primate species were: 1- For all the specimens analyzed of Saguinus leucopus, they could be liberated in any geographical area of its distribution range, since only one gene pool was found. 2- For the 14 Aotus sp. individuals sequenced from the SDA (Environmental District Secretariat), one of them (A. vociferans) was coming from the Amazon, seven exemplars belonged to A. griseimembra from the Magdalena Valley and the Colombian Caribbean coasts, four individuals represented to A. brumbacki from the Colombian Eastern Llanos, and two were associated to A. azarae azarae from Northern Argentina and Paraguay (which means that illegal traffic of animals is arriving to Colombia from other South-American countries). 3-Out 14 Cebus albifrons sequenced, two belonged to the geographical area of C. a. versicolor, one to C. a. pleei, 10 to C. a. leucocephalus and one could be not assigned because its sequence yielded a great genetic divergence with respect to the other specimens sequenced of this species. 4- The two Cebus capucinus sequenced showed to be associated to a gene pool found in the Northern of Chocó, Sucre and Córdoba Departments. 5- Out 11 Cebus apella sequenced, 10 showed to belong to the gene pool presented in the Colombian Eastern Llanos and highly related (but differentiable) to Cebus apella apella from the French Guyana. It could be named C. a. fatuellus sensu Groves (2001). One exemplar sequenced could be not related with the other C. apella analyzed, nor the related taxa to the aforementioned species (C. a. paraguayanus =C. cay; C. xanthosternos; C. nigritus). Rev. Los primates son uno de los grupos de mamíferos más decomisados por la autoridades ambientales (SDA) en Bogotá, Colombia. Un total de 133 primates fueron confiscados en Bogotá durante el año 2008 y mantenidos en las instalaciones de la SDA. De ellos, 115 fueron secuenciados para el gen mitocondrial citocromo oxidasa II (mtCOII) y en 112 ejemplares, las secuencias obtenidas fueron de alta calidad. Esas secuencias se compararon con las obtenidas para ejemplares muestreados directamente en campo por nuestro grupo de investigación y con origen geográfico conocido. De ese modo, se pudo determinar las áreas geográficas, en el territorio colombiano, donde pueden liberarse esos ejemplares después del tratamiento de rehabilitación oportuno. Los resultados principales para las cinco especies de primates fueron como siguen: 1- Para Saguinus leucopus, los animales analizados pueden ser liberados en cualquier área geográfica dentro del rango de distribución de la especie, ya que solo se detectó un acervo genético sin estructura espacial. 2- Para los 14 Aotus sp. secuenciados procedentes de la SDA, se determinó que: uno de ellos pertenecía a A. vociferans, propio de la Amazonía; siete ejemplares pertenecieron a A. griseimembra, propio del valle del Magdalena hasta la costa Caribe colombiana; cuatro ejemplares representaron a A. brumbacki, de los Llanos Orientales de Colombia; y dos ejemplares se asociaron con A. azarae azarae del norte de Argentina y Paraguay, con lo cual se muestra que en Colombia se está recibiendo fauna ilegal procedente de otros países. 3- De los 14 Cebus albifrons secuenciados, dos pertenecieron al área geográfica de distribución de C. a. versicolor; uno al de C. a. pleei, 10 al de C. a. leucocephalus, y uno no pudo ser asignado ya que su secuencia mostraba gran divergencia respecto a los otros ejemplares secuenciados de esta especie. 4- Los dos Cebus capucinus secuenciados mostraron estar asociados a un acervo genético encontrado en el norte del Chocó, Sucre y Córdoba. 5- De 11 Cebus apella secuenciados, 10 mostraron pertenecer al acervo genético que se encuentra en los Llanos Orientales de Colombia y altamente relacionado a Cebus apella apella de la Guyana Francesa, aunque podrían representar un acervo propio de Colombia, C. a. fatuellus sensu Groves (2001). Un individuo no pudo ser relacionado con ningún grupo de los otros C. apella estudiados, ni con los taxones relacionados a la especie mencionada, pero, probablemente, con su propio estatus taxonómico (C. a. paraguayanus = C. cay, C. xanthosternos, C. nigritus).

Este estudio fue realizado con dos grupos de tití gris (Saguinus leucopus), procedentes de decomisos y entregas voluntarias. Los animales fueron rehabilitados durante aproximadamente un año en la ciudad de Bogotá, con el fin de estimular el desarrollo y recuperación de las habilidades necesarias para su sobrevivencia al ser devueltos al medio ambiente natural. Se construyeron dos jaulas como plataformas de liberación en un bosque en el departamento del Tolima, y los animales fueron alojados en ellas para iniciar su proceso de acostumbramiento al medio. Durante este tiempo se realizó un estudio etológico, con el propósito de determinar las posibles variaciones comportamentales derivadas del cambio en el entorno. Los animales fueron liberados y se llevó a cabo el seguimiento visual para evaluar el proceso de rehabilitación y la adaptación de los individuos al nuevo hábitat. Se observó una variación en la presentación de comportamientos relacionados con actividades de desplazamiento, descanso e interacciones sociales en comparación con estudios realizados en cautiverio. Después de la liberación, los animales fueron vistos en sitios próximos a las jaulas de acostumbramiento, lo cual podría indicar que establecieron sus territorios en estas áreas; no se registraron variaciones significativas en la conformación de los grupos ni enfrentamientos entre las dos tropas. Estas observaciones indicarían que el proceso de liberación cumplió con su objetivo, y puede considerarse exitoso.
This study was carried out with two groups of white footed tamarins (Saguinus leucopus) from confiscations and voluntary incomes. Animals were rehabilitated during ayear in Bogotá, with the aim of developing and recovering abilities to survive in their natural environment. Two enclosures were built to the used as releasing platforms ina forest of Tolima region. Animals were put in these enclosures in order to begin the process of adaptation to the new environment. At that time researchers did an ethological study to determine behavioral variations due to the change of environment. Animals were released and monitored to evaluate the rehabilitation process and their adaptation. It was observed a variation on behavior related with activities of movement, resting and social interaction, comparing with captivity records. After releasing, animalswere seen in places close to the pre-releasing enclosures, and it could show thatthey established their territories in that areas. There was not significant variation in the conformation of groups and there were not records of fighting among troops. These observations could show that the process of release achieved its goal, and it could beconsidered successful.
