RESUMO

Private accident insurance complements the offer provided by statutory accident insurance in Germany. Private accident insurance can be taken out on a voluntary basis with private insurance companies. The amount of compensation paid in the event of accidents is subject to the dismemberment schedule (Gliedertaxe) and the permanent impairment of the physical or mental capacity, which is to be determined by a medical practitioner. The essay describes the development of the medical recommendations for assessing disability from the origins of private accident insurance in the 19th century to the present. It also considers individual scientific articles from medial personalities and the importance of accident surgery and orthopaedic specialist societies for the development of relevant assessment criteria and disability tables (Invaliditätstabellen) of private accident insurance.

RESUMO

Despite the indisputable progress made in the fight against gender inequalities since the last years of the last century, there are still many differences between the roles played by women and men when it comes to holding the top positions on boards of directors of relevant companies or in the presidencies of scientific societies, in which the presence of women does not reach at all the percentage of 40% that is estimated as necessary to achieve that equality. In this article, we show the biographies of Jean Irvine and Lesley Yellowlees, the first female presidents of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, respectively, although their appointments occurred many years after the aforementioned societies had been founded. The objective is to make their figures known to society and place them as references and models to be followed by the rest of women who wish to practice a profession. Some brief biographical data of other women who played a prominent role in scientific and academic societies in the early years of the 20th century are also shown.(AU)

PURPOSE: To share a Latin-American perspective of the use of telemedicine, together with blood pressure measurements outside the medical office, as a potential contribution to improving access to the health system, diagnosis, adherence, and persistence in hypertension treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A document settled by a Writing Group of Mexico Hypertension Experts Group, Interamerican Society of Hypertension, Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Prevention Council of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology, and National Cardiologist Association of Mexico. RESULTS: In almost all Latin American countries, the health sector faces two fundamental challenges: (1) ensure equitable access to quality care services in a growing population that faces an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases, and (2) optimise the growing costs of health services, maintaining equity, accessibility, universality, and quality. Telehealth proposes an innovative approach to patient management, especially for chronic conditions, intending to provide remote consultation, education, and follow-up to achieve measurements and goals. It is a tool that promises to improve access, empower the patient, and somehow influence their behaviour about lifestyle changes, improving prevention and reducing complications of hypertension. The clinical practitioner has seen increased evidence that the use of out-of-office blood pressure (BP) measurement and telemedicine are helpful tools to keep patients and physicians in contact and promote better pharmacological adherence and BP control. A survey carried out by medical and scientific institutions showed that practitioners are up-to-date with telemedicine, had internet access, and had hardware availability. CONCLUSIONS: A transcendent issue is the need to make the population aware of the benefits of taking blood pressure to avoid complications of hypertension, and in this scenario, promote the creation of teleconsultation mechanisms for the follow-up of patients diagnosed with hypertension.

What is the context? In almost all Latin American countries, the health sector faces two fundamental challenges: (1) ensure equitable access to quality care services in a growing population that faces an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases, and (2) optimise the growing costs of health services, maintaining equity, accessibility, universality, and quality. What is new?Telehealth proposes an innovative approach to patient management, especially for chronic conditions, intending to provide remote consultation, education, and follow-up to achieve measurements and goals. It is a tool that promises to improve access, empower the patient, and somehow influence their behaviour about lifestyle changes, improving prevention and reducing complications of hypertension. What is the impact?Needs are always infinite, and resources are finite, so according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), advances in electronic, information, and communication technology point to more significant equity in the provision of services, considering the effectiveness, possibility of refining the rationalisation of health spending, and improving health care for remote populations.A transcendent issue is the need to make the population aware of the benefits of taking blood pressure to avoid complications of hypertension, and in this scenario, promote the creation of teleconsultation mechanisms for the follow-up of patients diagnosed with hypertension.

RESUMO

Catalogs of competency-based learning objectives (CLO) were introduced and promoted as a prerequisite for high-quality, systematic curriculum development. While this is common in medicine, the consistent use of CLO is not yet well established in epidemiology, biometry, medical informatics, biomedical informatics, and nursing informatics especially in Germany. This paper aims to identify underlying obstacles and give recommendations in order to promote the dissemination of CLO for curricular development in health data and information sciences. To determine these obstacles and recommendations a public online expert workshop was organized. This paper summarizes the findings.

(AU)

RESUMO

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in women. Due to improved detectability and modern methods of treatment, the number of breast cancer survivors is estimated at 6 million women globally and is still increasing. The follow-up (FU) visits carried out at the Greater Poland Cancer Centre were assessed for compliance with Polish Society of Clinical Oncology (PTOK) and European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines. Materials and Methods: The database covered 484 women who were treated for breast cancer in the Greater Poland Cancer Centre in 2013. Of these, 233 attended FU visits for 5 years after completion of radical treatment and had no cancer relapse. The number of FU visits and the number and type of additional tests performed were analyzed. Results: The median number of FU visits over 5 years was 14, which is in line with the guidelines. 51.6% women had a mandatory annual mammography. A significant number of women had additional tests that are not recommended in the guidelines. Conclusions: There is a need to educate both physicians and patients on the principles of FU check-ups.

RESUMO

Biomaterials--from implanted iron teeth in the second century to intraocular lenses, artificial joints, and stents today--have long been used clinically. Today, biomaterials researchers and biomedical engineers are pushing beyond these inert synthetic alternatives and incorporating complex multifunctional materials to control biological interactions and direct physiological processes. These advances are leading to novel strategies for targeted drug delivery, drug screening, diagnostics and imaging, gene therapy, tissue regeneration, and cell transplantation. While the field has survived ethical transgressions in the past, the rapidly expanding scope of biomaterials science, combined with the accelerating clinical translation of this diverse field calls for urgent attention to the complex and challenging ethical dilemmas these advances pose. This perspective responds to this call, examining the intersection of research ethics -- the sets of rules, principles and norms guiding responsible scientific inquiry -- and ongoing advances in biomaterials. While acknowledging the inherent tensions between certain ethical norms and the pressures of the modern scientific and engineering enterprise, we argue that the biomaterials community needs to proactively address ethical issues in the field by, for example, updating or adding specificity to codes of ethics, modifying training programs to highlight the importance of ethical research practices, and partnering with funding agencies and journals to adopt policies prioritizing the ethical conduct of biomaterials research. Together these actions can strengthen and support biomaterials as its advances are increasingly commercialized and impacting the health care system.

RESUMO

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is one of the main causes of the widespread decline in vaccination coverage and has become the subject of ongoing debate among public health professionals. The present commentary is a "decalogue" of strategic actions to counteract vaccine hesitancy for public health professionals that comes from the cognitive and formative path put in place by the "Communication in Public Health" working group (WG) of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health. From the establishment of a national, multidisciplinary WG on VH to the activation of a national monitoring/surveillance system on vaccine hesitancy, several proposals are discussed. The identification and dissemination of good practices and tools to counteract and understand vaccine hesitancy, interdisciplinary training on vaccine hesitancy and on risk communication, community engagement and infodemiology, the inclusion of effective interventions to counteract vaccine hesitancy within the National Immunization Plan (NIP), the promotion and growth of a community of practice and research in the field of vaccine hesitancy, collaborations between scientific societies, and knowledge from the behavioral sciences represent other actions recommended in the present commentary. The present document suggests ten undeferrable strategies that could be implemented at the national and local levels in Italy, and that could be borrowed by other European countries in order to counteract vaccines hesitancy with a systematic and organic approach.

RESUMO

Over the last year, 5 national or international scientific societies have issued documents regarding cardiac amyloidosis (CA) to highlight the emerging clinical science, raise awareness, and facilitate diagnosis and management of CA. These documents provide useful guidance for clinicians managing patients with CA, and all include: 1) an algorithm to establish a diagnosis; 2) an emphasis on noninvasive diagnosis with the combined use of bone scintigraphy and the exclusion of a monoclonal protein; and 3) indications for novel disease-modifying therapies for symptomatic CA, either with or without peripheral neuropathy. Nonetheless, the documents diverge on specific details of diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment. Highlighting the similarities and differences of the documents by the 5 scientific societies with respect to diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment offers useful insight into the knowledge gaps and unmet needs in the management of CA. An analysis of these documents, therefore, highlights "gray zones" requiring further investigation.

RESUMO

The Brazilian Society of Neurological Research (SBIN) was founded on December 19, 2000, by a group of neurol-ogists headed by Professor Lineu César Werneck, MD, Ph.D., to promote scientific development and cultural diver-sity in neurology and neurosciences. The criteria for members' admission have always been strict, and the group reached 80% of physicians with a Ph.D. degree. However, the conditions to become a member were modified to attract more researchers, especially the younger ones, and neuroscientists from other areas of health and biology. The scientific events were the primary goal of SBIN. Eighteen editions were performed. The board and members of the SBIN recognized that the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, and the other societies that encouraged the neuro-sciences, were working to continue the exponential increase of scientific production in the neurosciences in Brazil, realizing that their purposes were fulfilled. The society was dissolved in December 2020 (AU)

In the decades after the Second World War, learned society publishers struggled to cope with the expanding output of scientific research and the increased involvement of commercial publishers in the business of publishing research journals. Could learned society journals survive economically in the postwar world, against this competition? Or was the emergence of a sales-based commercial model of publishing - in contrast to the traditional model of subsidized journal publishing - an opportunity to transform the often-fragile finances of learned societies? But there was also an existential threat: if commercial firms could successfully publish scientific journals, were learned society publishers no longer needed? This paper investigates how British learned society publishers adjusted to the new economic realities of the postwar world, through an investigation of the activities organized by the Royal Society of London and the Nuffield Foundation, culminating in the 1963 report Self-Help for Learned Journals. It reveals the postwar decades as the time when scientific research became something to be commodified and sold to libraries, rather than circulated as part of a scholarly mission. It will be essential reading for all those campaigning to transition academic publishing - including learned society publishing - away from the sales-based model once again.
