PURPOSE: To analyze the visibility of the maxillary sinus septa (MSS) in panoramic radiography (PR) versus cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to investigate whether the buccal cortical bone thickness (BT) or the septa dimensions influence their visibility. METHODS: Corresponding PR and CBCT images of 355 patients were selected and examined for MSS visibility. The septa dimensions (width, height, depth) and the BT were measured. Results were analysed statistically. RESULTS: Comparing the corresponding regions on CBCT and PR, 170 MSS were identified; however, only 106 of these were also visible using PR. The MSS visibility was significantly higher on CBCT versus PR images (P1: p = 0.039, P2: p = 0.015, M1: p = 0.041, M2: p = 0.017, M3: p = 0.000), except region C (p = 0.625). Regarding the measurements of MSS dimensions, only the height in region M1 (p = 0.013) and the width in region P2 (p = 0.034) were significantly more visible on CBCT. The BT in the area of the MSS was found to have a marginal influence on its visibility on the PR images only in regions M3 and M1 (M3: p = 0.043, M1: p = 0.047). In terms of MSS visibility based on the dimensions, significance was found for all three influencing variables only in region P2 (width; p = 0.041, height; p = 0.001, depth; p = 0.007). There were only isolated cases of further significance: M3 for width (p = 0.043), M2 for height (p = 0.024), and P1 for depth (p = 0.034), no further significance was noted. CONCLUSION: MSS visibility appears significantly higher on CBCT versus PR images. It is concluded that the septa dimensions and BT can influence MSS visibility on PR images just in certain regions.

BACKGROUND: Any intervention to the maxillary posterior teeth (MPT) and alveola pose a risk of sinus perforation. Given the proximity of these structures, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the maxillary sinus (MS) and MPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT images obtained from 207 patients (mean age, 45 ± 17 years; age range: 18-92 years) including 99 females and 108 males were examined retrospectively. Patients with sinus pathologies affecting the structure of MS and a history of oral and maxillofacial surgery were excluded from the study. On these images, the relationship of maxillary sinus floor (MSF) with 2 premolars and 3 molars was examined bilaterally for each patient using Kwak H. H. et al.'s classification. The presence, number, frequency and location of septa within the MSF were investigated. RESULTS: Examination of a total of 410 maxillary sinuses on the images of 207 patients with no sinus perforation or pathology revealed that septa were most commonly (48.7%) located in the middle segment (second molars). When the relationship between the MSF and MPT was evaluated, molar teeth were found to have a closer relationship with the MSF than premolars. CONCLUSIONS: It is believed that the findings of this study may provide further guidance to the dental practitioners and other clinicians for future studies.

Alveologenesis is the final stage of lung development in which the internal surface area of the lung is increased to facilitate efficient gas exchange in the mature organism. The first phase of alveologenesis involves the formation of septal ridges (secondary septae) and the second phase involves thinning of the alveolar septa. Within secondary septa, mesenchymal cells include a transient population of alveolar myofibroblasts (MyoFBs) and a stable but poorly described population of lipid-rich cells that have been referred to as lipofibroblasts or matrix fibroblasts (MatFBs). Using a unique Fgf18CreER lineage trace mouse line, cell sorting, single-cell RNA sequencing and primary cell culture, we have identified multiple subtypes of mesenchymal cells in the neonatal lung, including an immature progenitor cell that gives rise to mature MyoFB. We also show that the endogenous and targeted ROSA26 locus serves as a sensitive reporter for MyoFB maturation. These studies identify a MyoFB differentiation program that is distinct from other mesenchymal cell types and increases the known repertoire of mesenchymal cell types in the neonatal lung.

BACKGROUND: During the sexual maturation, gluteal femoral adipose tissue is subjected to numerous modifications, not observable in other regions, in particular in women and less in men. Other authors described this region, but they used imaging techniques having lower resolution, than MRI proposed in this study. High resolution imaging techniques might provide important and more detailed information about the anatomy of gluteal femoral region. METHODS: This study has been performed using 7 T-magnetic resonance imaging and ultrastructural analysis in order to provide accurate description of the subcutaneous adipose tissue and dermis of gluteal femoral region. In this study specimens harvested from cadavers and form living patients have been analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed the presence of three layers: superficial, middle, and deep, characterized by different organization of fat lobules. High resolution imaging showed the adipose papilla that originates from dermis and protrude in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Adipose papilla is characterized by a peculiar morphology with a basement, a neck and a head and these elements represent the functional subunits of adipose papilla. Moreover, ultrastructural study evidenced the relationship between adipocytes and sweat glands, regulated by lipid vesicles. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides important information about subcutaneous and dermal fat anatomy of gluteal femoral region, improving the past knowledge, and move toward a better understanding of the cellulite physiopathology.

Numerous protocols for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements on natural water are used in the literature. An ISO protocol for the determination of DOC exists since 2018, but it is certified for DOC values ≥ 1 mg L-1, while many publications report DOC values much lower. In addition, this ISO protocol does not include indications on vials cleaning, filtering material, and type of caps and septa to be used. The purpose of this study was to evaluate protocols for measurements of low DOC concentrations (≤ 1 mg L-1). The effect of the sample container, type of septum, filtration material, nature of acid used for storage, and matrix effects on DOC concentration were evaluated.•The use of glass vials decontaminated at 450 °C or 500 °C for at least 1 h, 0.45 µm hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes previously rinsed with 20 mL ultra-pure water and HCl acidification gives the lowest DOC contamination,•Sulfides (ΣH2S), sodium (Na+) or calcium (Ca2+) do not induce high matrix effect for the analysis (≤ 10%),•At low DOC concentrations (≤ 1 mg L-1), the use of pierced PTFE septa with acidified samples induce slight DOC contamination after storage at 4 °C, and dramatic contamination after storage at -18 °C.

The study of the maxillary sinus anatomy should consider the presence of two features of clinical importance. The arterial supply course and the presence of the so-called Underwood septa are two important factors to consider when planning surgical treatment to reduce the risk of surgical complications such as excessive bleeding and Schneiderian membrane perforations. This study aimed to investigate the above-mentioned anatomical structures to improve the management of eventual vascular and surgical complications in this area. This study included a total of 200 cone-beam computed topographies (CBCTs) divided into two groups of 100 CBCTs to evaluate the arterial supply (AAa) course through the lateral sinus wall and Underwood's septa, respectively. The main parameters considered on 3D imaging were the presence of the AAa in the antral wall, the length of the arterial pathway, the height of the maxillary bone crest, the branch sizes of the artery in the first group, and the position of the septa, the length of the septa, and their gender associations in the second group. The CBCT analysis showed the presence of the arterial supply through the bone wall in 100% of the examined patients, with an average size of 1.07 mm. With regard to the septa, 19% of patients presented variations, and no gender difference was found to be statistically significant. The findings add to the current understanding of the clinical structure of the maxillary sinus, equipping medical professionals with vital details for surgical preparation and prevention of possible complications.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relationship between sphenoid sinus (SS) pneumatization types, carotid canal types and carotid canal-intersinus septa connection. METHODS: The paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT) images of 274 patients (141 males and 133 females) were evaluated retrospectively. SS pneumatization, SS intersinus septation, SS intersinus septa deviation, carotid canal classification, carotid canal dehiscence, carotid canal-intersinus septa connection and presence of Onodi cells were evaluated. RESULTS: In presellar and sellar SS, type 1 carotid canal was detected. However, type 3 carotid canal was detected more in postsellar SS. On the left side, in 26.4% of the postsellar SS, carotid canal dehiscence was detected. On the right side, carotid canal-intersinus septa connection was detected in 55.8% of the postsellar SS and 35.1% of the sellar SS. On the left side, it was detected 58.3% of the postsellar SS and 30.9% of the sellar SS. In postsellar type SS pneumatized cases, right caroid canal-intersinus septa connection increased by 5.4 fold and left carotid canal-intersinus septa connection increased by 7.3 fold compared to presellar type SS pneumatization. In 2≥ intersinus septa group, left carotid canal-intersinus septa connection increased 5.0 fold compared to 'no septa' group. CONCLUSION: In this study, we evaluated SS pneumatization types and their relation with carotid canal types and carotid canal-intersinus septa connections. Type 3 carotid canal (protrudation to SS wall) was detected more in postsellar SS. In these cases, surgeons should be very careful during surgery to avoid damage to the internal carotid artery (ICA).

OBJECTIVE: The development of the maxillary sinus is different in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) compared to non-CLP individuals. To investigate the prevalence and features of maxillary sinus septa (MSS) in patients with CLP in comparison with the non-CLP population. DESIGN: Retrospective study. INTERVENTION: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) evaluation. SETTING: CLP center in Shiraz faculty of dentistry, Iran. PATIENTS: A total 306 sinuses (88 cleft and 218 noncleft) on 153 images (CLP group: n = 66; control group: n = 87) were examined to determine the prevalence of septa and characterize them. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sinus septa were characterized according to height, orientation, angle, origin, and location. The chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Fisher's exact test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of septa was 28.9% and 32.1% in the CLP and control groups, respectively. No significant difference was found between the study groups in terms of prevalence, location, and orientation of MSS. The average height and angle of septa were significantly higher in the control group compared to the CLP group. Inferior origin was significantly more prevalent in the control group than in the CLP group (P = .004). CONCLUSION: There was no difference in the prevalence of MSS between patients with CLP and non-CLP individuals. However, certain features of the septa were different in patients with CLP.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate and determine the prevalence, location, and morphological differences of the maxillary sinus septa using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in the Madina region and to discuss its clinical implications during sinus surgery. METHODS: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional radiographic analysis of 808 CBCT scans from patients who attended Taibah University's College of Dentistry between December 2018 and June 2023. Age, gender, number of septa present per side, location (anterior, middle, posterior), morphology (complete or partial), and type (primary or secondary) were among the study variables. For data statistics, correlation analysis was utilized.  Results: Eight hundred eight CBCT scans were included with a mean age of 34.7±15.08. Septal bone was absent in 60.64% of the sinuses examined. Single septa were more common than multiple septa (p=0.009). Bilateral septal presence and the left septal bone were more common than the right, but none of these distributions were statistically significant. Males showed more sinus septa compared to females, but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.420). Single septa were more prevalent in people under the age of 25. CONCLUSION: More than 60% of the Madina population had patent sinus cavities with no septal processes, but males with single septal processes predominated.

Introduction. The presence of bone septum in the maxillary sinus is one of the most common anatomical findings. So-called Underwood septa (US) are an atypical bone formation in the maxillary sinuses. Mostly they are quite easily found in CBCT studies and have major importance in sinus lift procedures in dental surgery. Furthermore, the shape, location, and size of the bony septa are important in each maxillary sinus surgery. Material and methods. A retrospective study of 120CBCT scans from the authors' own database was conducted. Results. Approximately 37.5% of each CBCT was associated with the occurrence of US, while just 25% had a full septum, and a total of only 14 patients had a half septa. More females have US, while healthy pneumatized maxillary sinus is most commonly found (82.22%). There is no correlation between the occurrence of silent sinus syndrome (p = 0.174), mucosal thickening (p = 0.325), or retention cyst formation (p = 0.272). Most sinuses are without any opacification in CBCT evaluation (91.11%), while other syndromes are not statistically relevant. Conclusions. It seems that the occurrence of Underwood septa is not statistically related to any clinical, radiological, or pathological condition within the sinus (p > 0.05). Furthermore, a more full or partial appearance of US was found in female patients.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus septa increase perforation risk of Schneiderian membrane during the sinus floor elevation (SFE). Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) allows for a more precise assessment of the septal position; thus, preoperative CBCT analysis is substantial to avoid possible complications. This study aims to investigate the 3D characteristics of the maxillary sinus septa based on CBCT images. To our knowledge, no study reported the CBCT-based investigation for the sinus septa among Yemeni population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 880 sinus CBCT images 440 patients. The septa prevalence, locations, orientations, morphology, and associated factors were analyzed. The effect of age, gender, and dental status on the sinus septa and the relationship between sinus membrane pathology and sinus septa were also analyzed. Anatomage (Invivo version 6) was used for CBCT images analysis. Descriptive and analytical statistics were performed, and a P-value < 0.05 was significantly considered. RESULTS: The maxillary sinus septa were found among 63.9% of patients and 47% of sinuses. The average septa height was 5.2 mm. 15.7% of patients had septa in the right maxilla, 18% in the left, and 30.2% in both. Gender, age, and dental condition had no influence on the presence of septa, and septa presence did not influence sinus membrane pathology. Many septa originated from the floor (54.5%), located in the middle (43%), with coronal orientation (66%) and complete configuration (58.2%). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, the septa prevalence, locations, orientations, and morphology were significant and equivalent to the highest recorded in the literature yet. Thus, when sinus floor elevation is planned, CBCT imaging of the maxillary sinus is recommended for safe dental implantation.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the presence of nasal septal deviation in patients presenting with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). METHOD: Patients diagnosed with OSA using polysomnography were further evaluated radiographically for the presence of nasal septal deviation, maxillary sinus septa, and oropharyngeal airway volume using CBCT. RESULTS: Nasal deviation was present in all the patients and was classified according to Negus et al classification, further categorized with Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score, maxillary sinus septa in those patients were classified according to Al Faraj et al, and the oropharyngeal airway volume was found to be an average of 10,086.37 ± 3966.116 mm2 airway volume. CONCLUSION: All the patients in the study had nasal septal deviation, hence it can be considered as a radiographic marker in suspecting OSA.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) is one of four main patterns of placental injury defined by the Amsterdam consensus statement and is associated with adverse fetal and maternal outcomes. Laminar decidual necrosis (DLN), extravillous trophoblast islands (ETIs), placental septa (PS), and basal plate multinucleate implantation-type trophoblasts (MNTs) are lesions attributed to decidual hypoxia, excess trophoblast, and shallow implantation, but are not included in the current MVM diagnostic criteria. We aimed to investigate the relationship between these lesions and MVM. METHODS: A case-control model was used to evaluate for DLN, ETIs, PS, and MNTs. Placentas with MVM on pathologic examination (defined as ≥2 related lesions) constituted the case group, and maternal age- and GPA-status-matched placentas with less than 2 lesions constituted the control group. MVM-related obstetric morbidities were recorded, including hypertension, preeclampsia, and diabetes. These were correlated with the lesions of interest. RESULTS: 200 placentas were reviewed: 100 MVM cases and 100 controls. MNTs and PS showed significant enrichment in the MVM group (p < .05). Furthermore, larger foci of MNTs (>2 mm linear extent) were significantly associated with chronic or gestational hypertension (OR = 4.10; p < .05) and preeclampsia (OR = 8.14; p < .05). DLN extent correlated with placental infarction, but DLN and ETIs (including size and number) lacked association with MVM-related clinical conditions. DISCUSSION: As a marker of abnormally shallow placentation and related maternal morbidities, MNT merits inclusion within the MVM pathologic spectrum. Consistent reporting of MNTs >2 mm in size is recommended, as these lesions correlate with other MVM lesions and MVM-predisposing morbidities. Other lesions, particularly DLN and ETI, lacked such association questioning their diagnostic utility.

Within the pulmonary acini ventilation and blood perfusion are brought together on a huge surface area separated by a very thin blood-gas barrier of tissue components to allow efficient gas exchange. During ventilation pulmonary acini are cyclically subjected to deformations which become manifest in changes of the dimensions of both alveolar and ductal airspaces as well as the interalveolar septa, composed of a dense capillary network and the delicate tissue layer forming the blood-gas barrier. These ventilation-related changes are referred to as micromechanics. In lung diseases, abnormalities in acinar micromechanics can be linked with injurious stresses and strains acting on the blood-gas barrier. The mechanisms by which interalveolar septa and the blood-gas barrier adapt to an increase in alveolar volume have been suggested to include unfolding, stretching, or changes in shape other than stretching and unfolding. Folding results in the formation of pleats in which alveolar epithelium is not exposed to air and parts of the blood-gas barrier are folded on each other. The opening of a collapsed alveolus (recruitment) can be considered as an extreme variant of septal wall unfolding. Alveolar recruitment can be detected with imaging techniques which achieve light microscopic resolution. Unfolding of pleats and stretching of the blood-gas barrier, however, require electron microscopic resolution to identify the basement membrane. While stretching results in an increase of the area of the basement membrane, unfolding of pleats and shape changes do not. Real time visualization of these processes, however, is currently not possible. In this review we provide an overview of septal wall micromechanics with focus on unfolding/folding as well as stretching. At the same time we provide a state-of-the-art design-based stereology methodology to quantify microarchitecture of alveoli and interalveolar septa based on different imaging techniques and design-based stereology.

The functional topography of the human primary somatosensory cortex hand area is a widely studied model system to understand sensory organization and plasticity. It is so far unclear whether the underlying 3D structural architecture also shows a topographic organization. We used 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data to quantify layer-specific myelin, iron, and mineralization in relation to population receptive field maps of individual finger representations in Brodman area 3b (BA 3b) of human S1 in female and male younger adults. This 3D description allowed us to identify a characteristic profile of layer-specific myelin and iron deposition in the BA 3b hand area, but revealed an absence of structural differences, an absence of low-myelin borders, and high similarity of 3D microstructure profiles between individual fingers. However, structural differences and borders were detected between the hand and face areas. We conclude that the 3D structural architecture of the human hand area is nontopographic, unlike in some monkey species, which suggests a high degree of flexibility for functional finger organization and a new perspective on human topographic plasticity.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Using ultra-high-field MRI, we provide the first comprehensive in vivo description of the 3D structural architecture of the human BA 3b hand area in relation to functional population receptive field maps. High similarity of precise finger-specific 3D profiles, together with an absence of structural differences and an absence of low-myelin borders between individual fingers, reveals the 3D structural architecture of the human hand area to be nontopographic. This suggests reduced structural limitations to cortical plasticity and reorganization and allows for shared representational features across fingers.

BACKGROUND: The variability in the maxillary sinus anatomy makes dental implant planning challenging. One of the anatomical landmarks that could affect the decision for implant placement around the maxillary sinus is the sinus septa. This study aimed to retrospectively determine the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and morphology of the maxillary sinus septa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 309 CBCT images that were analyzed to determine the prevalence, height, location, and orientation of the maxillary sinus septa. Descriptive statistics, Mann‒Whitney U tests, and Kruskal‒Wallis tests were used for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 618 maxillary sinuses were analyzed. Maxillary septa were present in 30% (n = 188) of the sinuses and in approximately 45% of the analyzed images. The mean height of the septa was 5.09 mm. The presence of bilateral septa was evident in 49 subjects (35.25%). Female subjects were significantly more likely to have only one septum (n = 67, 53.6%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The presence of septa is very common, found in one-third to approximately half of the evaluated cases, which warrants careful examination before any surgical interventions to avoid possible complications.

Lymphangiomas are benign hamartomatous malformations, infrequently seen in the oral cavity. They can cause aesthetic issues and functional impairments if not treated in the initial stages, thus necessitating the need to diagnose early. Two presentations were observed: a 35-year-old male with classical frog-egg appearance involving lower buccal mucosa with macrocheilia for two years, which was diagnostic on mucoscopy and histopathology, confirming acquired capillary lymphatic malformation. The second case was of a 12-year-old girl with a gradual appearance of reddish lesions over the tongue and episodic history of bleeding, which was confirmed on mucoscopy, and histopathology is highlighted. Mucoscopy of both the cases showed yellowish-pink lacunae with a hypopyon-like feature and surrounding pale septa. We present two cases of oral lymphangiomas with different presentations and highlight the importance of dermoscopy of oral lesions to bypass invasive techniques such as biopsy.

RESUMO

The presence of maxillary septa may render sinus augmentation more challenging particularly when encountered at the ideal implant position. This article demonstrated a novel technique for lateral access sinus augmentation using an assembled surgical guide to achieve proper lateral window outline, precise septum identification and osteotomy, and secure membrane detachment. This technique increases the predictability and efficiency of the procedure while reducing the risk of complications.

Obstructive vaginal and uterine anomalies including imperforate hymen, transverse vaginal septum, and vaginal and/or cervical atresia or aplasia, might rarely present in infancy or childhood with hydrocolpos and/or hydrometra but they usually go unrecognized until presentation with amenorrhea and hematocolpos and/or hematometra in puberty. They should always be included in the differential diagnosis of a suprapubic and/or introital mass; in the latter case, vaginal vascular malformations and vaginal tumors should also be considered. Uterovaginal aplasia typically manifests with amenorrhea in puberty and needs to be differentiated from complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and gonadal dysgenesis of genetic males. Uterine fusion anomalies usually present with fertility and/or obstetrical complications in adulthood. However, a unicornuate uterus with a blind rudimentary contralateral horn containing functioning endometrium, and didelphys or septate uterus with a deviating obstructive septum might present in childhood or puberty with sequelae related with secretions or menstrual retention. This review provides a collective account of the most clinically important information about vaginal and uterine anomalies in childhood and adolescence for clinicians involved in the care of young females with the aim to provide guidance in appropriate evaluation and management.

Alveologenesis is the final stage of lung development in which the internal surface area of the lung is increased to facilitate efficient gas exchange in the mature organism. The first phase of alveologenesis involves the formation of septal ridges (secondary septae) and the second phase involves thinning of the alveolar septa. Within secondary septa, mesenchymal cells include a transient population of alveolar myofibroblasts (MyoFB) and a stable but poorly described population of lipid rich cells that have been referred to as lipofibroblasts or matrix fibroblasts (MatFB). Using a unique Fgf18CreER lineage trace mouse line, cell sorting, single cell RNA sequencing, and primary cell culture, we have identified multiple subtypes of mesenchymal cells in the neonatal lung, including an immature progenitor cell that gives rise to mature MyoFB. We also show that the endogenous and targeted ROSA26 locus serves as a sensitive reporter for MyoFB maturation. These studies identify a myofibroblast differentiation program that is distinct form other mesenchymal cells types and increases the known repertoire of mesenchymal cell types in the neonatal lung.
